Final Pep Rally in Peabody Stadium

BY LILY CISEK On October 7th, all the students of SBHS gathered together for what was advertised as “the last Pep Rally in Peabody Stadium.” Of course, the Pep Rally took place before our football game against our crosstown rival, San Marcos High School. I personally love Pep Rallies, because they bring students together under one similarity: school spirit. Some students may claim they have no spirit but even they can’t deny they get excited when we start our classic SBHS chants.

As students began to flood the stadium and the rally began, Pep and Rally (Emmett Reese and Tick Jellison) pointed out one thing that was wrong, where were the seniors? This of course was the que for our seniors to run (or

take a leisurely stroll) down the famous hill and across the field into the stands. This was in celebration of Seniors Night, where senior athletes and other seniors are honored by the students and their families before the football game.

As the seniors took their seats, the rally commenced with some SBHS cheers and chants lead

by Pep and Rally and the cheer leaders. Students took place in our classic grade versus grade relay race which included walking with an egg balanced on a spoon in one students mouth, a sack race, a wheel barrow race and a traditional, but dramatic, sprint to the finish line. Our triumphant Seniors emerged in a close victory against the Juniors and got the reward of throwing a pie in Mr. Bechio’s face for everyone to see.

But of course we couldn’t leave the teachers out of our friendly competition. Some of our new teachers and staff members all participated in a whipped cream eating contest where they had to shove their faces in a pile of whipped cream, find a piece of gum and whichever teacher blew the first bubble, won.

One of the many highlights of this pep rally were the performances by our Cheer Team and the Donettes. The Cheer Team, performing first, did a routine called “Red Cup” which in-

cluded not only regular cheer moves and stunts but a very well choreographed hip hop number.

But the real dancing was left to the Donettes, performing “Sorry,” choreographed by Tamarr Paul and Ashley Ayers. The routine was packed with technical moves, edgy formations and many strong and powerful dancers. The Donettes and the Cheer Team really know how to get us up on our feet and full of school spirit.

The finale of the pep rally, as most students would agree, will be one to remember. Members of ASB put on a skit about Royals infiltrating our campus and our fearless Don coming to save the day. After a two on one fight, the Don beat down the two Royals, but it wasn’t over yet. The Royal Lion himself came to avenge the Royals and fight the Don but, in true Don fashion, we won the fight and carried the mangled “lion” off the field. Nothing gets a teenagers school spirit up like healthy, simulated action and violence.

The Pep Rally was a success, and I was happy to see the SB vs SM game so packed that night with people prepared to cheer our Dons on to victory! Go Dons!

Stirring the Pot at CC Tenth Graders Tackle Macbeth

BY CHLOE SHAAR On October 6 and October 14 the Sophomore class took a field trip to the Ensemble Theatre to witness the production of Macbeth.

After several weeks of reading the play, and having a guest speaker come and organize workshops for them, it was so much better finally seeing the show in person. The Ensemble Theatre put on the show in honor of the presidential election, therefore making the play more relevant than it already was.

Macbeth is a dramatic, action packed play originally written by Shakespeare surrounding Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, a power-hungry couple that, quite literally, murders their way to the top.

Tenth graders not only

read the play, but really got to know it. They analyzed every act, scene, line and character and our English teachers did an excellent job explaining the difficult language in a way that teenagers would understand.

Regular high schoolers going around the room and reading out of a library copy of Macbeth is nothing compared to seeing the actors on stage. The production itself was breathtaking with its simple, yet well put together costumes and detailed makeup. The main focus of this production was the theaters use of projections throughout the play. They used projections not only for the sets and backgrounds but also as an illusion to make the many ghosts and supernatural beings featured in Macbeth appear and disappear.

The play, being put on at the New Vic Theater downtown, will continue on throughout the month, with shows almost every night. But it isn’t only for teenagers! It can be enjoyed by almost anyone, minus children and squeamish adults, for there is quite a bit of blood. And knowledge of the play also isn’t required. It’s very easy to follow as long as you pay a little extra attention to the lines and body language.

Sophomore and Senior English teacher, Ms Ruth, organized the whole trip by collecting donations and finding ways to get tickets for everyone. The class walked to the theatre and food was later provided once they got back on campus. Overall it was a wonderful experience for everyone involved!

BY ALISHA MERGALIYEVA This year City College provides special cooking class for SBHS students. Unfortunately, deadline to enroll it was on Sept. 9. However, this class will be probably provided next year as well. Culinary Arts Pathway Class has two courses: Hospitality sanitation and safety: This is the first course in the Culinary Pathway. It includes an in-depth study of management’s responsibility in sanitation, safety procedures and practices as set forth by the laws and regulations covering the food industry. It also covers some food- handling and cooking techniques. This class takes place on Tuesdays at 2:30-6:30 pm in Westside Community Center. For that you get 5 High School credits and 2 units as College Credits.

During Hospitality Sanitation And Safety Course students will learn how to properly use cooking tools.

Also, the teacher gives a lecture about some diseases you can get by eating wrong cooked food. In order to take Baking Course, students have to take Sanitation And Safety Course.

Principles of baking: This is the 2nd course in the culinary pathway. It includes an introduction to the basic skills needed for a professional bakeshop. Theory and practical skills required to produce quality pastries and breads. It also covers some food-handling and cooking techniques. It takes place on Thursdays at 2:30-6:30 pm in Westside Community Center.

For that you also get 5 High School credits and 2 units as College Credits.

During Principles Of Baking Course teacher shows some ingredients and explains how to cook this week’s dishes. After that students have an opportunity to cook by themselves (of course with teacher’s help). They cook in well provided kitchen with all tools and kitchen furniture. Sometimes they work

in groups, which is good, because they can get to know each other better. By the end of the class students have to create two items. Usually it’s desserts or pastry. Last week they baked Buttermilk Biscuits and Banana Bread. On its own class isn’t big, only about 10 students attend it.

Teacher is very friendly and out-going. However, for some students it’s hard to get to Westside Community Center.

Hopefully, next year this class will take place on campus.

Like every class, you get grades on semester exams, which include written and practical sections. For the practical section students are given one item to cook without any guidances or instructions. It’s a great way to understand how good are you in baking or what you need to learn.

According to one of SBHS students, Filisha Alexandra, this class is a great opportunity for students interested in working in the culinary industry to be creative.

Pianos on State

BY LILY CISEK A harmonious combination of both music and local art are currently flooding State Street with the 7th annual Pianos on State project. Starting on October 13th, painted pianos will begin to pop up on all corners and plaza’s of downtown Santa Barbara and will stay there until October 24th.

The project, funded by several different companies like New Noise, The Santa Barbara Bowl and the Santa Barbara Art Commision, promotes local artists, proffesional musicians and budding, ammature singers.

Every piano is painted in a unique way by local artists who get to express themselves on something other than a traditional canvas. Local artists submit pieces of their art in early September to the Santa Barbara Education Foundation where around ten of the best artists are chosen. After artists are chosen, they all gather on one day to paint donated pianos before sending them off into the public eye. Past designs include whimsical representations of eyeballs, abstract pieces and detailed, classical paintings. Not only is this a great photo op for pedestrians but also is a big statement about art. Art doesn't need to be dis-

In the past, casts of local musicals, professional singers and even Santa Barbara High’s own choirs have been scheduled to perform at some of these pianos. If you go down to see these pianos you may even see people find a new passion, whether that may be making beautiful music or creating as much noise as they can. These pianos inspire many forms of art: music, painting dancing, and even photography. Pianos on State is an inspiring event that gets people interested in finer arts day by day.

A Chat with MacFarquhar

BY CORRICK ESSELLIER-NORTON At SBHS we get the incredible opportunity to meet some amazing authors an opportunity not often afforded by other schools. Last week for instance, we were visited by Larissa MacFarquhar who came to talk about her book Strangers Drowning. This book grapples with impossible idealism, drastic choices and the overpowering urge to help. She interviews many people who do crazy things from their own peculiar perspective of morality. These people truly believe it is up to them to alleviate any suffering they see but they also think it’s up to them to rank whose suffering is worse. This offer created dire situations, sometimes harming loved ones in order to help others. For example, a couple adopts two children, but they feel they need to do more so they ended up adopting 20 children.

The problem is that they didn’t have the money or time to support 20, children so the kids often went hungry and never got

the attention of their parents.

Another couple starts a leprosy colony in the wilderness of India, living in huts with no walls. But they exposed their two small children to leprosy and the dangers of living in the jungle, like being eaten by panthers.

One woman is spending her entire life in emotional pain because she believes every single penny she spends on herself is money that she is taking away from dying children. These people only see the bad in the world and feel a immense amount of guilt every single time they spend any money on themselves.

The book goes on to pose the almost utilitarian question of whose suffering is greater. If three people are drowning, two strangers and one the person you love most in the world and you could either save the strangers or your loved one, who would you save? Most would make the “selfish” choice and save their loved one, therefore becoming responsible for the deaths of two people. Now think of this on a larger scale; you could

donate $1000 to a family in your town to pay for their child’s expensive life saving medical procedure, or you could donate the same amount of money to give children antimalarial shots, saving them. Your money would save more people and help and community but at the same time you’re denying one child $1000 that could help save their life.

It’s an interesting subject but also very painful. I know that I don’t want to think of dying children every single time I buy something. I’m looking forward to reading her book and talking to other people who went to the author talk to discuss what we think of these so called “do-gooders”.

Overall, Larissa MacFarquhar spoke for 20 minutes, not nearly long enough to ask all the questions we had. We look forward to hearing more from the vibrant community of authors in Santa Barbara and reading more new and exciting books!

A Solution to the Pollution

BY ANTONIA ALONSO Hydros and other trending water bottles benefit you financially and they also help the environment. Some important facts about water bottles include that the energy used to make water bottles in a year is enough energy to fuel one million cars. Less than one fourth of water bottles are recycled and 30 million water bottles per day end up in landfills or as litter.

Tapped water is tested more often and held to higher safety standards than water bottles in the U.S. Bottled waters cost 10,000 more times than tap water in Santa Barbara.

Plastic bottles are a great issue in our community especially since we live right by the ocean. When we leave plastic bottles on the streets or misplace them, they are likely to end up in the ocean. Animals could mistake the plastic for food and eat them, which ends up killing them. They have found plastic in birds, fish, seals, and other sea animals when they wash up onto the shore, dead.

When the animals eat the plastic, they feel that they are no longer hungry and they accidentally starve themselves. More than 100,000 sea animals die a year due to in-

gesting plastic from bottles. Not only is it bad for the animals, it makes our beautiful beaches look filthy.

Writers Wanted Hello writers and poets!

A literary journal has been created by Leah Makler and Callie Fausey. “The literary journal is an open space for different forms of writing” says Callie Fausey. They want as many submissions as they can get. The first theme is “beginning and endings”, they will accept anything from poems to short stories.

Pumpkin Fever: The Season Spices up

BY ALISHA MERGALIYEVA Everything starts in the end of September. It’s the time when people start to mention different fall festivals, costume shops and pumpkins! Why do pumpkins always appear with Halloween? Yes, it’s Halloween’s attribute, but why? According to the folktale, Stingy Jack invited the Devil to have a drink. Not wanting to pay, he convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin. However, rather than use the coin to pay for the drinks, Jack kept it for himself. Eventually Jack freed the Devil who promised not to take his soul to Hell. Instead, he gave Jack an ember that he placed in a hollowed-out turnip and carried as he walked the Earth forever.

The legend of Stingy Jack and his turnip lantern traveled to the United States with Irish immigrants. It was not long before children began making their own vegetable lanterns using pumpkins, which were plentiful in America. Over the years, children began carving faces into the pumpkin lanterns to frighten

each other. Throughout the late 19th century, jack-o’-lanterns became more common as decorations at Halloween until they became part of the holiday itself. Based on the story of the “Jack-o’-lantern,” American children began carving their own lanterns out of New World pumpkins. The lanterns became associated with Halloween in 19th century when the mayor of Atlanta decorated his home with them for a Halloween party.

So, I decided to take a walk Downtown and see if I could find any interesting, pumpkin related items. No More Clowning Around

Why not vampires or one eyed monsters you ask? Clowns have taken America by storm as innocence has turned evil. There have been almost a dozen sightings in multiple cities around the country of these terrifying threats. The first documented discovery was by a innocent little boy in Greenville, South Carolina, who had said there

were two in the woods, both wearing bright clothes and extravagant makeup. As noted, the clowns had tried to lure the child into the woods. This is no time to take the maxim, “don’t talk to strangers” lightly. Thankfully, during the recent outrage, we haven’t had any clown scares here in SB… until now. There have been threats of clown violence towards schools in Oakland, Antioch, and Fairfield.

Although these destinations are all more than five hours

away from Santa Barbara, there has been some discussion of students in our district promoting the clowns to pay us a friendly visit.

With Halloween just around the corner, many are concerned for the safety of the community. Fortunately, most people know at this point, dressing up as a clown this holiday season could be a dangerous and sticky situation.

Teen Angst and Apathy in the Cold, Bitter Season of the Depressing

BY QUINN TUBIOLO & BRIAN CHRISTENSEN So you may have heard that there’s a presidential election coming up. This past Wednesday marked the day of the final no-holds-barred brawl- I mean Presidential Debate- to take place before the election on November 8. There’s been a great deal of controversy surrounding this election. The two main candidates are both pretty despised by the general public. One of these candidates says and does absurd things which he or she rarely (once) apologizes for. The other candidate is just kind of a bore.

A lot of people (especially here in the melodramatic state of California) are wondering: Is Armageddon is upon us?

So we here at the Forge decided to take a poll to assess how students and teachers feel about this circus that we’re calling an election. We gathered some surprising and interesting information (we also found out that some of our fellow students choose to identify as dinosaurs, dogs, and various other forms of what is commonly known as a “jackass”).

One of the patterns that we expected to find but did not was a correlation between a given sample student or staff member’s ethnicity (or geo-cultural identity, if you will) and their preferred candidate (Trump or Hillary). The main reason that we expected to see a pattern here is that Donald Trump has said some incredibly offensive things about minorities. However, we did not find any relationship between the two factors.

This is partially due to the fact that more than fifty percent of our sample students answered that they would prefer a president other than Clinton or Trump. For some people that candidate was Jill Stein, the candidate representing for the Green Party. For others, that candidate was Bernie Sanders. And for a few, that candidate was Santa Barbara High School’s very own Mr. Anthony Jackson (even though he isn’t actually a candidate).

However, most of the students who said they wanted someone other than Clinton

or Trump to be the president did not specify who that someone was. On the other hand, almost every staff member we surveyed answered that they preferred Clinton. Many of them wrote that they weren’t very satisfied with her as a candidate but that they were confident that she would be a more responsible Commander-in-Chief than Trump.

This suggests that either a) we just don’t care very much about politics, or b) we’ve totally lost hope for a half-way decent America. In either case, it suggests that our generation suffers from a severe case of apathy.

Don’t get me wrong. Apathy can be awesome. It’s really cool when someone in a movie says something sort of stupid and someone else responds by ignoring them from behind some dark sunglasses and lighting a cigarette. But I’m talking about a totally different, lame-ass, nonMarlon Brando type of apathy.

Right now, we’re dealing with a Megalomaniac running for president.

I’m not saying that Hillary Clinton is some Godsend. But please. We can’t really afford to be apathetic (I mean, we can, because we can’t vote anyways, but you get the point). Whoever wins this election will have the power to send the United States to war and impose a draft that could force all of us (women too, as of June) to go to war. This president will also have the power to appoint at least one new Supreme Court Justice. This decision has the power to affect us all in the form of laws related to abortion, women’s rights, and gender rights.

We need to be cynical instead of apathetic. The fact is that we’re disheartened by the prospect of either person winning. Short of violent revolution, there’s no way to prevent one of the less-than-stellar candidates from becoming the next president of the United States. But there’s no rule that says we can’t ask questions. We’re on our way into adulthood. We can either give up now and live the rest of our lives conforming to blind dismay or we can start doing our part to change the quasiactivist culture. We can complain about

the political candidates all we want, but we should at least know what it is that we hate about them.

Which brings us to the second part of our survey. The students and teachers that we surveyed were also asked which major political issues they found to be the most pressing. The options we provided were the economy, terrorism, education, women’s and gender rights (including abortion), and race relations.

A quarter of our sample said that they believe education is the most important issue. Neither Clinton nor Trump has said much of anything about education, which might also partially explain why so many of us wish that there was another option. Other popular big ticket issues were the economy and race relations.

We’ll find out just how screwed we are on November 8, but until then let’s get a head start as the next cynical generation.

Catch up on your John Oliver to make sure that when you talk shit, you talk intelligent shit. After all, we’re going to be stuck with whoever wins for at least the next four years (unless they get assassinated- I’ll try not to hold my breath if Trump gets elected) so we’ve got lots of time to articulate just what about them is so sacrilegious to all we hold dear as Americans. We’ve also got some time to prepare to dodge a draft (just in case), so we should probably start thinking about that, too.

Good luck out there, fellow young Americans, and stay cynical.

Guns’ N’ Roses Would Be Proud (And so would Harambe)

It was bright. It was sweaty.

And sometimes it was even downright rank-smelling.

Some of us had fun. Some of us don’t remember if we had fun. Some of us had a terrible time. Some of us are probably still a little hungover.

It was homecoming, and whether you went and liked it, went and hated it, or didn’t go at all (laaaaaaaame), it was what the experts would call a success.

The tiny space designated to contain the party was full. The twenty foot-square dance floor was packed tight with well-dressed, sweaty bodies for the entire duration of the dance. Even though I’m pretty sure the DJ basically played the same

song for three hours, people could not stop dancing.

There was definitely something very rave-esque in the air (just without the ecstasy- I think?).

On the way in, our “Jungle Fever” tickets were confiscated and promptly replaced with the oh-so-lazily renamed “Welcome to the Jungle” tickets (name was totally my idea, no matter what anyone tells you). Unfortunately, the DJ didn’t actually play “Welcome to the Jungle”. Still, the cliché GNR reference was definitely much better than “Jungle Fever”.

Highlights of the dance were the green strobe light and the really loud club music. There was a coat check, which was a really nice touch (gave the joint a hint of class, especially amongst the teenagers making out all over the friggin’ place). Lots

of the females in attendance ended up barefoot due to an epidemic of uncomfortable heels (stupid damn beauty standards, right?). By the time the whole affair had come to its close, most everyone was ready to party or ready to go to sleep.

All in all everything went as planned (even despite the racially insensitive hiccup, thanks to Ben Zevallos’ masterful handling of the situation). No one died (as far as I know), hopefully no one is pregnant, and a majority of those in attendance seemed to have had fun. So way to go, team.

BY EMILY PETETAN AND CARLILE SOLDO This past Friday was Santa Barbara High’s last football game in Peabody Stadium before renovation begins, and what better final hurrah than a Homecoming Game. Our Channel League rivals, the Ventura High Cougars, played a hard game and took the victory with a final score of 21-50. In the second quarter, Jeremiah Nicholson made the first of our 3 touchdowns. Tick Jellison brought a kick-off from the Cougars all the way into the endzone, but unfortunately, a penalty made by another player revoked the touchdown. We had a brilliant halftime show in which our 2016 Homecoming Queen was announced. This years princesses Kimberly Gebhardt, Ashley Torres, Sarina Wasserman, Tatum Vestal, Arianna Sanchez, and Alea Hyatt rolled up and in the end Tatum Vestal was announced our queen! After the 25 minute halftime show, we enter the 3rd quarter. Sophomore quarterback Frank Gamberdella added on another 6 points to our 7. And finally Jeremiah Nicholson brought it home with the final touchdown of the night with a 12-yard dart from Gamberdella. In the last few seconds of the game, the Cougars slipped in another few points, leaving the final score at 21-50. Tonight our boys will be playing the Chargers at Dos Pueblos High School. Wish our boys good luck in the halls!

TATUM VESTAL Tatum Vestal fills this years spot as Santa Barbara High School’s Homecoming Queen! She participates in mock trial, is one of the Varsity Cheer captains, and is the ASB Vice President. When asked how she felt when it first registered she was being nominated, she responded “I was really excited and so grateful, because no one really expects it to happen to them and to look around at all the guys in your classes and realize all these people nominated me, it makes you feel so special.

She thinks even though someone could say this is one big popularity contest, to her, being a homecoming princess means that over the years you have just smiled at people in the halls, even if you don’t know them, and just having an overall positive reputation.

ARIANNA SANCHEZ Ariana Sanchez is involved in the VADA academy and is a part of the VADA psych counsel. When she first realized she was being nominated, she was excited but more surprised over everything else.

She kept thinking to herself “Are they sure they have the right person, is it really me?” To her, being a homecoming princess means people know you’re a nice person, you do things around school and are very involved, and it of course means you get to wear a tiara.

ALEA HYATT Alea Hyatts most interesting activity within school was being the only female player on the Santa Barbara High School Football Team, her junior year. Outside of school she plays for the women's national soccer team and will graduate early this year to play for University of North Carolina womens soccer team.

When she was first being nominated she was actually at the dentist and didn’t realize what was happening till she got back to school, and although she wasn’t looking forward to dancing in the assembly otherwise she was very excited.

To her, being a homecoming princess means representing your class.

SARINA WASSERMAN Sarina Wasserman participates in many activities inside of school and outside of school. When inside of school she is the editor and chief of The Forge and is in musical theatre, and outside of school she plays the piano, the guitar, hangs out with friends, and of course likes to sing. Her junior year Sarina was one the of the lead roles in the schools musical Pippin. Although she feels it might be cliche, she said “When I first realized I was being nominated I was very shocked but excited, and honestly did not see it coming at all.� To her being a homecoming princess means her classmates have recognized her as a nice person and fun to be around.

ASHLEY TORRES Ashley Torres takes part in the Catholic club at Santa Barbara High and outside of school volunteers at her church, Saint Raphaels, and stays active with her close friends.

When she became fully aware to the fact that she was being nominated she became very nervous and even started shaking. However, in the end she was very excited for the road ahead. To her, being a homecoming princess means you are kind to everyone and have a lot of acquaintances that you get along with.

KIMBERLY GEBHARDT Kimberly Gebhardt is involved in interaction club, she is the captain of the girls basketball team, and is Senior Class President. Her first initial emotion while being nominated was excitement and after comprehending it she realized how grateful she was that out of about two thousand kids at school she still had close friends and people who were thinking about her during the nomination process and decided to nominate her. To her, being a homecoming princess is someone who is well rounded and liked in the community and someone who can get along with different all types of groups around school.

Sheep in Kanye’s Clothing: How Popular Music is Poisoning Everything You Believe In

Turn on the radio.

What do you hear? No, not the sick beat. Listen to the words. What is the artist saying? What is the message that they’re trying to get across?

They’re almost definitely talking about one of four things; sex, heartbreak, lean, or engaging in illicit activities. There’s a decent chance that they say something that devalues women (or devalues themselves, if they are a woman). They may even drop a “n***A” or ten.

No big deal, right? Kids just wanna have fun. Obviously there’s nothing wrong with having fun (we’re the last people who would discourage debaucherous behavior).

But here’s the thing: women and minorities still aren’t really getting the level of respect that they fundamentally deserve. We aren’t really in a place as a society where it’s fine and dandy to promote a popular culture that endorses social inferiority.

Some of the same people attending “Black Lives

Matter” rallies are listening to music put out by some of the loudest and proudest misogynists in our fair nation.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, some of the most bigoted white frat-boys in our country eagerly devour music containing references that promote rape culture and represent black men as “gangstas”.

Which brings us to my message. There is an inherent hypocrisy in our youth culture that we should work together to squash. Most of us would agree that racism, homophobia, and sexism are terrible things that ought to be purged from the earth.

But this can never happen if we keep sitting here on our asses eagerly swallowing what the media and pop culture have tailored to keep us blind and distracted. How the hell are we supposed to fight injustice when every song on our iPhone promotes it? Donald Trump says a lot of the same kind of narcissistic misogynist crap as Kanye West. Sure, they sit on nearly opposite ends of the social spectrum. But most of us would never draw that comparison.

Don’t get us wrong. There’s

nothing wrong with fun.

There’s nothing wrong with a little recreational drug use now and then. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with scantily clad women.

But let’s not get confused.

Context matters. Usually the scantily clad women in music videos are not there to be appreciated for their individual beauty. They’re there to make women feel like products. They are packaged to look just like all the other girls in music videos.

If you’re going to stand up for a cause, there’s certainly something to be said for actually standing up to something. It’s time for a change in direction. Let’s call the propaganda out for what it is. There are plenty of artists who still make music that sends a message that we as humans can get behind without feeling slightly guilty about it. But good music like that no longer exists in the media covered forefront of pop culture. That’s why we propose that it high time we tear the red carpet right out from under these great misogynists and bigots. So let’s all do ourselves a favor and not become the “why generation”.

Rap Music is Dying of an Undiagnosed Disease

This is not another one of our merciless rants about rap music.

Flash back to the sixties. Rock music was born from the youth angst that grew out of political tensions over race relations and the Vietnam War. It represents all the things that young people care about; it’s controversial, it’s new, and their parents hate it.

Fast forward to the mid-1980’s.

Rock and roll is still alive and well. Bands like Van Halen and Guns’N’Roses dominate the airwaves alongside the likes of Michael Jackson and Madonna.

Unlike the politically charged songs of the sixties, most rock songs at this point center around the same few subjects; sex, heartbreak, booze, and drugs. These are pretty much the same crap that most rap artists today talk about.

Enter the 90’s.

Rap music has risen from the ghetto into the national spotlight. Many of the most popular rap groups (like NWA) make music that is about something real.

This is music for the people by the people born from oppression and frustration. This music is genuine and it catches on among a fringe faction of the public because of its authenticity.

As this is happening, grunge rock is also rising in popularity. Like rap, grunge is written from a place of aggravation stemming from the status quo and a desire to shake shit up.

But by the end of the nineties, rap music had grown into an internationally acknowledged form of art and rock and roll had begun its decline into an underappreciated outsider novelty.

Today, rap music has

become what rock and roll had become by the eighties. Rap artists today behave the way rockstars did then. This suggests that rap music is on the same course as rock music.

It is likely that in the next ten years a resurgence of rap music that is actually about something will occur.

Authentic rappers will make a comeback.

Following this, it is possible that rap as a genre will become more obscure and will be replaced by another form of music that might not even exist yet.

Mendes' New Album Confronts Assault Head on

BY GLORIA PEREZ Shawn Mendes, just 18 years old, sold out Madison Square Garden on July 16th, 2016 within less than five minutes. Now he’s is back with another great album, Illuminate. Mendes has the stunning ability of both writing emotional lyrics while completely capturing the audience with beautiful melodies. In this album, he brings his melodic and lyrical type gift to 14 songs of, including some focusing on domestic violence in teen relationships.

Nearly 1.5 million high school students nationwide experience physical abuse from their partner in any single year, but only 33% of teens who were in a relationship ever told anyone about the abuse. One in ten high school students has been purposefully hit, slapped or physically hurt by a boyfriend or girlfriend. Of course, there isn’t just physical abuse, there’s emotional and verbal, physical, and sexual abuse. 50% of young people who experience rape, physical or sexual abuse will attempt to commit suicide. ‘Treat You Better’ starts it off with song about girl who used to date Mendes, is now dating a guy who abuses her, cheats on her, and gets her into trouble. Of course, like many other teen, she doesn’t tell anyone; only Shawn knows what’s happening between her and her new boyfriend. At the end of the video, the director made sure to announce a website where victims of abuse can get help: The National Domestic Violence HOTLINE 1.800.799.

Girls aren’t the only victims in relationships; males can be impacted as well. ‘Mercy’, one of the most touching

and intimate songs on this album, talks about a boy getting his heart broken by a girl who doesn’t even know she’s doing it. Although, they have talked about their relationship, she still finds a way to hurt him. One thing teens tend to do a lot in relationships are make promises, ‘No Promise’ talks about a relationship that started off as a wonderful and relationship goals, what then turns into a nightmare. Both of the partners start promising things they can’t keep. At the end, both of them get hurt. ’Three Empty Words’ is about Shawn and a girl who want to start dating, but because of Mendes’ lifestyle, he refuses to date her because he doesn’t want to hurt her/ break her heart.

Needless to say, not all the songs on his album are about domestic violence, some are about relationships within teens-YES! I’m talking about you and your boo reading this right now! Like ‘Lights On’, Mendes talks about the girl not needing to take her clothes off to look great, some guys could learn from him. With a bit of R&B, blue sounds, and some acoustic guitar in there, Shawn’s second album doesn’t fail us...once again.

Overall, Shawn’s second album did hit #1 on the iTunes chart, and not only that: his music is becoming a more mature more confident, with incredible guitar playing and soulful melodies, it’s clear this album exceeds expectations. Congratulation Shawn!

Artist of the Month

An Pham: The Art of Stage Production

BY MIRANDA ORTEGA An Pham is a busy young women these days here at SBHS. In addition to being the stage manager for the upcoming production of Young Frankenstein, An is in all honors and AP classes. She moved to Santa Barbara from Vietnam three years ago at the end of her seventh grade year. An had to learn a lot about our country and culture in a really short time, so I thought I’d take the time to learn about where she came from.

An told me her biggest challenge in moving to America from Ho Chi Minh City, often referred to as Saigon, was understanding how America works. The language barrier was tough, although she already knew English because it was a mandatory subject at her old school. (Ho Chi Minh city is located in Southern Vietnam and is the biggest city in the country.) She moved to America because she really wanted to study here. The thing An most misses about Vietnam is the food; one of her favorite dishes was a noodle dish called Bành Canh.

An says she most likely won’t live there again because the heat and the noise. An quickly found a home here at SBHS. “I made really great friends and started activities out of school to stay busy”. She became associated with theatre at the end of her eighth grade year. She started tech last year because she wanted to help out and get community service and then realized she loved it more than performing. Her favorite part about being in tech is getting to see the behind the scenes. As stage manager she is in charge of the paper work, prep for the show and wrangling the crazy theatre kids.

An is very busy so she tries to finish her homework and theatre work at school, so when she gets home she can do the rest of her homework and then watch Grey’s Anatomy (her favorite show.) Outside of tech and school An loves art, photography, and Harry Potter, where she tells me she is sorted as a Ravenclaw. An wants to continue working in the theatre for the rest of highschool; she also wants to take as many AP classes as she can and wants to pursue a career in science.

Whipped Their Royal Highness

BY CARLILE SOLDO For the 2nd year in a row Santa Barbara’s Varsity football team has taken down the San Marcos Royals once again. In this years 57th Big Game against San Marcos we got back our star receiver Tick Jellison, who ironically suffered a broken ankle in last years San Marcos game which had him out until now. Jellison was unstoppable with 5 of our 8 touchdowns and 214 total yards, which resulted in him taking this year’s Gary Blades Memorial MVP award. He made his first touchdown within the first 2 minutes of the game with a pass from sophomore quarterback Franky Gamberdella. Tick brought 5 out of his 6 touches to the end zone.

Due to a torn ligament in senior Donovan Zavaleta’s ankle, Tick took his place and picked up a 65 yard punt return and carried it all the way to the end zone. It’s good to have you back Tick. The remaining three touchdowns were made by seniors Jeremiah Nicholson and Ruben Velez.

Nicholson took a 42 yard sprint to the end zone and made an interception nearing the end of the first half. Throughout the season, Jeremiah has been switching from quarterback to free safety to running back, and making it look easy. Ruben Velez, starting running back rushed for 146 yards and brought us 2 touchdowns. To wrap it up to a 55-7 win. Defense was strong and we are happy to have back another senior, Em-

mett Reese who was out due to a separated shoulder injury that prevented him from playing offensive guard. Branden Pineda and Angel Velasquez made pass interceptions and George Laura recovered a fumble. Defense prevented the Royals from furthering their 7 points. SB is catching up with a 3-4 on the season while SM falls to 0-7. Last Friday was our Homecoming game against Ventura where they crowned this year's Homecoming Queen.

Wish our boys good luck in the halls for their next game!

Boys Waterpolo: San Marcos Sinks in Shame

BY ANTONIA ALONSO The first quarter against San Marcos was a furious rush back and forth in the pool but the boys were able to win the quarter, 4-3. The boys did a spectacular job on defense and offense as well in the second quarter.

They scored three more goals and did not let the Royals score any for the rest of the first half.

The Dons, scoring goal after goal, making a total of five, they led the game 12-5 going into the last quarter. It was 14-6 when the San Marcos coach called for a timeout to run a play with less than four minutes left in the game. Coach Walsh decided to

take out starters Sawyer Rhodes, Adam Gross, and Jack Rottman and give some of the younger members of the team a chance for some valuable playing time and experience. It was an excellent game played by the starters and the younger players, the Dons were victorious 14-9.

The first quarter against Dos Pueblos, similar to the San Marcos game but the Dons managed to one-up them 3-2. The boys managed to break the back and forth scoring by the end of the second quarter they were beating the Chargers 7-4. The third quarter was filled with one on

ones against the Dos Pueblos goalie, and the defense came up with numerous steals. They went into the fourth quarter winning 12-5. The Dons went into the fourth quarter with a new line up and managed to score two goals. Despite a furious charger comeback the game ended in the favor of the Dons 14-11.

The Dons will face the Royals and Chargers again in October to compete for Channel League.

They had great results in these two games and will hopefully have similar results next time.

Cheer Captains Embody the Spirit of SB

BY QUINCY RUGGIERI After losing much of their varsity team due to seniors going onto college, the new varsity and junior varsity captains of the SBHS Cheer program had to come up with inventive ways to bond the team together.

We interviewed some of this year’s cheer captains to find out their opinions on the season so far.

Tatum Vestal is one of the four varsity cheer captains at SBHS as well as ASB Vice President.

Vestal’s been on the team since her Freshman year and was appointed to captain for the 20162017 cheer season. As a senior on the team and a varsity-captain, Vestal was set on making strong bonds with the new cheerleaders.

Vestal and the other captains planned many sleepovers and team breakfasts for the team to bond with one another. “Also during practice, we make sure that we’re staying positive. Me and the other captains are kind of picking up the team and bringing up everyone’s confidence,” said Vestal. Her biggest goal for this season is to make sure everyone is comfortable and confident so that the team can win at their competitions.

“Going to every game there is really involved

me with the school. A lot of the time sports ties into everything else at school, that’s the main source of spirit, so that’s gotten me to meet new people and interact with the school.”

Ceci Barron is also one of the four varsity cheer captains. This is Barron’s fourth year on the SBHS cheer team, but she started cheering in 7th grade in an all-stars group. Barron and Vestal might be continuing cheer after high school, but it depends on where they attend college next year.

“My best friends now, I met them because of cheer freshman year.

That’s why the other captains and I are really trying to create a bond between the girls,” said Barron when asked how cheer impacted her high school career.

Gyselle Pantoja is one of this year’s junior varsity cheer captains here at SBHS. She’s a sophomore in the Visual Arts and Design Academy (VADA) and a new addition to this year’s cheer program. To prepare the team to be great when they make the varsity team, Pantoja and the other junior varsity captains would like to train the girls to trust one another and create a tight bond. “My goals for the season are not to only work hard but also show the community that SBHS is a

great school that they should believe in. I want to have meaningful conversations with the girls so that they realize we can count on each other,” said Pantoja when asked what her goals for the season were. “Cheer impacted me by letting me branch out and meet new people. It just kind of showed me a new perspective on the school,”

Jillian Chierici and Ryan Kopeikin, both sophomores, are also junior varsity cheer captains this year.

Chierici does soccer and lacrosse here at SBHS as well as cheer. Although this is Chierici’s first year doing cheer, she’s adapted like she has been doing it forever. “This season we’ve been trying to do better stunts and work on our extensions,” said Chierici when asked what the team needed to work on. Kopeikin has been doing cheer since last summer and has fallen in love with the sport.

“It’s really fun to have a new group of girls and it’s also cool because my mom was a cheerleader so it’s been fun to find my own path but still be with her in a sense,” said Kopeikin.

Good luck this season girls! We will be cheering along with you at football and basketball games this year.

Sports Hall of Fame

BY MART FORNELLS I went to an I went to an interview with Mr Becchio to ask some questions about the Athletic Hall of Fame.

The Santa Barbara Athletic Hall of Fame is an athletic group made up of alumni from Santa Barbara High School. For years, they have hosted a dinner to get all of these amazing athletes together.

The athletic hall of fame started between the 1960s and 1970s when they decided to honor and congratulate their best former athletes. Today, the program is led by Billy Brace, Jovi Nunez, and David Bolton- all former dons.

The Hall of Fame will start up again on November 3rd, where SBHS will honor former student athletes.

There will be a dinner for all the honorees and the people who are a part of the Santa Barbara High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

Unfortunately, we were unable to get ahold of those who run the Athletic Hall of Fame, but we had the opportunity to interview past honorees.

Barbara Nwaba, for example, was born on January 18, 1989 in Los Angeles, to Nigerian parents. She is the oldest of 6 children and graduated from UCSB. She is a professional track and field athlete and was the

2015 USA outdoor Track and Field champion in the “heptathlon”.

Another athlete being honored is Charles Frederick “Karch” Kiraly.

He was born on November 3rd, 1960. Kiraly is an american volleyball player, and he’s the coach of the United States volleyball team. He won olympic gold medals in both volleyball categories: beach and indoor. He has been honored as the greatest volleyball player of the 20th century.
