A Message from your ASB President Hello everybody, and welcome back to another memorable year of high school. Freshmen, welcome to the show.

In my opinion, I’m one of the happiest students in our school. I wake up every morning thankful.

Thankful that I live in Santa Barbara, and have the opportunity to not only come to this school, but to represent the student body every day.

Santa Barbara High is filled with history and tradition. The list of impactful alumni goes on, and when someone says “Dons Pride,” it means more than most people think. Yes, it means being focused, respectful students, and showing spirit and support for the school. But it also means the years of history and unceasing tradition that is almost unheard of anywhere else. This includes Peabody Stadium, and a historical dominance in all sports.

It includes The Madrigals choir, The Forge newspaper, and the recently added academies. It includes the vigorous rivalry against San Marcos.

“Don’s Pride” means acknowledging everything our wonderful school has to offer, and everything that defines us.

As ASB President, I strive to make this year different. ASB and I will do what we can to make an impact on individual students, to inspire them to love our school. We will encourage others to show school spirit, to go to the basketball game, to attend the school play, to join a club, to support one another. We will ideally help to form a community where everyone is comfortable, happy, and successful.

I’m looking to make this year super fun for everyone, with loads of cool, new, and improved ideas for school events. First and foremost, I want to try to increase attendance at all activities, whether they be sporting

David McCullough visits SBHS

get answers about writing, reading and McCullough’s own work from the man himself.

David McCullough is an American writer, historian, and winner

of the National Book Award, and a two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction. He graduated from Yale University with a major in English literature. His widely-read books primarily relate to American History and the people who have shaped the American narrative. His books range from stories of John Adams to Harry S. Truman. Later in his career McCullough went on to narrate classic American documentaries including The Civil War by Ken Burns.

Mr. McCullough was brought to Santa Barbara by UCSB Arts and Lectures for an event at the Granada Theatre. Earlier this month, our librarian Ms. Marsha Barr received a phone call from UCSB Arts and Lectures offering to have McCullough speak to students free of charge.

After speaking to a group of 400 students, Mr. McCullough went on to speak to hundreds of paying customers at the Granada about his new book, The Wright Brothers.

It was an incredible experience to have such an esteemed writer like McCullough speak to us. Successful men and women like David McCullough who take the time and effort to connect with high school students can’t help but be a positive and lasting influence on the students at SBHS.

SBHS alum shares key moment Seniors kick off year

with Senior Sunrise Thursday, October 1, marked the first of a series of events planned for the class of 2016 on their journey to graduation. It began with Senior Sunrise, an early morning get together on the Senior Lawn. A continental breakfast was served and senior shirts were passed out as the nearly six hundred seniors enjoyed a pleasant welcome despite the pressures of Senior Year.

BY BEAU LETTIERI William Belfiore, our most recently retired ASB Class President recently began his first semester as an Undergraduate at Harvard University. On the day of his move in he received the key to his dormitory in a sealed envelope, each key having a unique four digit code engraved on it to make it easily identifiable. “Move-in day at Harvard is simultaneously the most incredibly liberating, hectic, and stressful experience I could have pictured,” Belfiore shared, as he described the surreal experience. After arriving at his door he opened up the

envelope and engraved on his key was the word: “DONS.” At first he was in disbelief, and immediately thought it was an easter egg thought up by the housing department.

However after comparing his key with others he saw that room keys around him read “DOVS” and “D6NS” making it clear that this was a complete coincidence. Belfiore quickly shared the serendipity with his parents and close friends, and earlier this week posted it to Facebook where it received over three hundred “likes” in less than twenty-four hours. It goes to show that “Once a Don, Always a Don” runs deep.

New Block Schedule Truncates Lunch period

BY CHLOE PEREZ Many returning students at Santa Barbara High School are aware that lunch is now a bit shorter than last year’s lunch because of the new block schedule. Although it feels like ten minutes were cut off lunchtime, in reality only five minutes were. Yet that five minutes make a bigger impact that one might think, especially since thirty-five minutes puts a big stain on the entire experience.

For instance, the student store’s line usually takes nearly fifteen minutes until a student is able to order and get food. Their food is not the best, but it is good enough. One day, unfortunately, their computers had a malfunction, so there was about a fifteen minute delay before food was served to the students waiting. So there is a con about going to the student store: we are left to the vagaries of technology.

The cafeteria is a different story.

Although the food is bland and unexciting, it offers more varieties than the student store. Compared

to the student store, the line in the cafeteria was a little bit more quicker.

To get your food and wait to input your student ID number only took about ten minutes.

I decided to venture off-campus and go to Sal’s for lunch, which is located a few blocks away from the school. I arrived across the street from Sal’s and saw a line that snaked all the way out the front doors. I already knew that it wouldn’t be a quick line. It took nearly fifteen minutes until I was able to get a meal.

After speed-walking back to the campus, there were only a precious few minutes left to actually eat.

Students are now rushed to get lunch if they do not bring one from home. The distance and lines at restaurants just take up too much time for a student to walk or drive back to campus and have a decent lunch. I assume tardies are now up and much more students bring their food into their fifth period class.

Only five minutes were cut off from this school year’s lunch, but it makes a bigger impact than many think.

CA Senate looks for a “smarter balance” on standardized tests

The California High School Exit Exam, known as the CAHSEE has been cancelled for the year of 2015 because the contract with the testing company, Educational Testing Systems, has expired. The CAHSEE was introduced for the class of 2004. The California Senate will suspend the requirement to pass the CAHSEE for 3 years under the Senate Bill 172.

This follows an increase in the national pass rate since 2006, now at 95% with similar tests around the country, as all states have high school exit exams. However, many seniors who delayed taking the CAHSEE and planned to take or retake the CAHSEE this year may have their graduations interrupted, because they will not able to take the CAHSEE. About 5,000 students from the class of 2015 across California are being left in limbo on their high school graduation. The currently trending hashtag #CAHSEE on Twitter reveals youth who feel betrayed by this failure of the state to properly organize their education. For example, a Twitter user by the handle @trulytelesis had this to say “#HighSchoolDiplomaBound because no one should have to have their life on hold because of this #CAHSEE test.”

The good news is that this limbo for some high school students was addressed Monday September 21st. , by the California Senate passage of Bill 725, which will allow seniors who qualify for all other graduation requirements to continue on, despite not taking the CAHSEE. Both the UC’s and CSU’s have agreed not to deny students who did not have access to the CAHSEE. The California State Superintendent of schools will convene an advisory panel to determine to whether to continue the tests or, what should replace it.

There are larger issues concerning the CAHSEE and other standardized tests. First of all, there is a great disparity in the passing rates for different demographics, making some question whether this test has merit as an evaluation of a graduate’s abilities.

Secondly, a test that has sections designed from math learned in 8th grade does not prove one is ready to graduate from high school. As we see the unveiling of the Common Core, it is speculated that the Common Core standardized tests will replace the outdated CAHSEE style tests across the nation. Previously, other replacements have been proposed and rejected as not suitable. The biggest question of all may have to do with our testing culture.

This issue affects us locally, with a twist: the pass rate at Santa Barbara High for this year’s 10th grade class is dismally low, hovering around 50%. My main concern as one of the many high school students who have been forced to sit through these tests is, who is deciding what is the best way to test us students? In the mean time let’s make sure everyone who wants to graduate can.

SBHS Band Celebrates Centennial

BY BEAU LETTIERI This year marks a landmark in Santa Barbara High School’s much lauded history: one hundred years of instrumental music at SBHS. For a century, student-performed music has had an enormous presence at SBHS, growing from a mere eight players in 1915 to over one hundred at its peak in 1970.

Instrumental Music at Santa Barbara High School has its roots in the Reserve Officer Training Corps, better known as the ROTC, a program that trains young men for the United States Army. A century ago Robert Foxen established a band within the ROTC, beginning with eight members. By 1924, when SBHS moved from the corner of De La Vina and Anapamu to its current location, the ROTC band was credited with increasing school spirit all around.

Having grown to fifteen “peppy” members, The ROTC band played on a wide variety of occasions, including sports games in the new Peabody stadium. This played an integral role in adding much pep and school spirit to these events. The band even played at the dedication of the stadium itself on Thanksgiving Day, 1924.

In 1930, a new band director by the name of John W. McAllister took

over the program. He created the Marching Band, separate from the all male ROTC band. From there the marching band grew substantially and by 1937 the band included sixty-five members of both genders, including the first Majorettes in the late 1930’s. Through the 1930’s and 1940’s the band expanded to include

Under director Henry Brubeck (brother of jazz legend Dave Brubeck) beginning in 1942, the SBHS instrumental music program began to perform outside of Santa Barbara, most notably at the Rose Parade in Pasa-

BY SARINA WASSERMAN Florencia was only 16 years old when she inadvertently stepped on a landmine losing her leg and suffering from severe burns in the process.

This horrific accident stripped her of the freedom: she cannot run, dance, skip, jump or even walk without the aid of crutches. Just like you and I, she is a teenager, but she will never be able to live independently.

Unfortunately, stories like Florencia’s are far too common in Mozambique.

There are over ten thousand people who have lost more than just a leg in land mine accidents; they have lost hope.

Now a mother of 18 years old, Florencia is getting the leg she should have never lost. Jaipur Foot in Jaipur, India is helping Florencia and the other 10,000 amputees receive the prosthetics they so desperately need.

Jaipur foot has developed a prosthetic for only $50 and it is free to the recipient. Florencia will have a leg again. The ten thousand will all have legs again.

This is where Santa Barbara High School students get involved. Help One Walk International (HOW Int.) is a nonprofit organization founded here in Santa Barbara by Douglass Bowman and John Mullen. They

plan to create a ten to twenty-two minute film, with hopes to share this amazing story and create awareness of the tragedies in Mozambique. Dane will focus mostly on film, while Ella and Samsun will focus on photography to incorporate in their final film as well as to document the

Joining them on their adventure will be a group of Alumni from the Brooks Institute of Photography who will document our three SBHS students’ journey in both Africa and India. Additionally, John and Douglas (founders of HOW Int.) will be writing a book about the trip.

This trip is the penultimate example of how teens are able to “change the world one person at a time.”

Since the news broke last year that the Class of 2016 would be graduating at an as yet unnamed “somewhere” due to the upcoming stadium renovation this winter, the senior class has been held in limbo, not knowing where they would finish their four year career at SBHS. Since then there has been wild speculation, with ideas ranging from La Playa Stadium to the Beach. The decision is nearly final (pending the approval of the contact by school board). As we go to press, we are pleased to announce that this year the senior class will graduate at the Santa Barbara Bowl.

One deviation from the routine of previous years is that the part that seniors find most tedious, the graduation practice, will be cut down substantially. Because the agreement with the Bowl limits us to a single day, graduation practice will take place on the day of graduation only, versus the normal two days of practice.

Mr. Becchio knew how important this decision was to the senior class, so he asked for the help of Senior Class President Lily McIntyre along with ASB President Sean Babcock, Alice Upton, Kylie Transki, Porter Rees, Jada Howard, Connor Egan, Madeleine Schmidt, Amber Melgoza, Carter Soto and Jessyca Beksa to serve on a committee which would provide input on the graduation venue and the accompanying logistics. venues were given serious consideration, including La Playa Stadium, The Santa Barbara Courthouse, The Beach, and The Santa Barbara Zoo — however, The Bowl and La Playa Stadium were the only two venues that could seat over three thousand comfortably.

Given the close proximity and long history with Santa Barbara High School the Bowl became the obvious choice as the venues were narrowed down.

Principal Becchio is confident that the refurbished stadium will be finished in time for graduation next year for the Class of 2017, making the class of 2016 the only class to ever graduate at the Santa Barbara Bowl. While the deal is still pending a signature, Mr. Becchio says “the only way that we wouldn’t be in the Bowl at this point would be if we could have access to our own stadium.”

Graduation: a History

BY BEAU LETTIERI Since 1875 thousands of students have had the honor of graduating from Santa Barbara’s first high school. However, in the school’s 140 year history, (at three sites), the senior class has graduated in a variety of locations around Santa Barbara.

Santa Barbara High School, Graduation, Class of 1969 founded in 1875, first was located in a section of Lincoln School on East Cota Street. After outgrowing the building, Santa Barbara

High moved to a new campus on the corner of Anapamu and De La Vina Streets.

During this time graduation ceremonies took place in the Potter Theatre which was located on the corner of State and Montecito street, prior to the construction of the 101 Freeway.

Named after Milo Potter, owner of the Potter Hotel who donated the fireproof asbestos curtains in return for the theatre being named after him, the Potter was a state of the art theatre house. Graduation ceremonies, along with theatrical productions,

were held in this venue for many years after it was opened in 1907. By the mid 1910’s plans for a new campus located on the east side of town were in the works and by 1924, SBHS had migrated across town to its current location. One year after the opening of the new campus, an earthquake struck Santa Barbara on June 29, 1925 destroying the previous SBHS campus, the Potter Theatre, along with large portions of the city. Between 1924 and 1929 Graduation was held in the new theatre, however by 1930 classes had outgrown the theatre and graduation had to be moved outside to the recently built Peabody Stadium. Since 1930 every class has graduated in Peabody Stadium — until now, as the 141st class will graduate at the Santa Barbara Bowl while the Stadium is undergoes much-needed renovation.

A chip off the old block

BY CHLOE SHAAR Recently Santa Barbara High School decided to join the District trend, by implementing a block schedule to our daily schedule. However, the block schedule at SBHS is a little different than our fellow high school San Marcos’s Block Schedule and a lot more like Dos Pueblos’s modified block. The modified Block Schedule includes two days per week where students attend only half of their classes but remain

in those classes for 92 minutes. On modified block days, Wednesdays and Thursdays, students will have late start to allow teachers time to meet collectively and as departments. Wednesdays students attend periods 1, 3, 5 and on Thursdays students attend 2, 4 , 6.

The key element of the new modified block schedule is the seminar period which takes place after the first period of the day.

level will be study hall for students who are in academic good standing.

However, multiple seminar tracks will be offered to get students who may need or may want help in a particular subject to get that help. Every progress report, students will be assigned to a seminar that best suits them, based on their grades and teacher recommendation. Later this year the “Golden Ticket” system will be rolled out, to allow students to request to either visit one of the set up resource centers or meet with teacher for one seminar period. However, students will need to submit their golden tickets to their seminar teacher by 3pm the day before the seminar period they wish to visit for help. The first seminar shift will take place this coming Wednesday, October 7.

Mr. Richard Johnston previously was director of the Math Honors Society, which this year morphed into the new academic mentorship program, a key component of the seminar’s goal of helping students.

Over the past five years, Math Honors Society existed to help students find math less daunting with after school sessions, and now its successor, the academic mentorship program, strives to help students all around in any subject they may be struggling in, during the school day. He is incredibly proud of the work his tutors did over the past five years, and sees a huge potential in the Academic Mentors program to make Santa Barbara High a better place.

When surveying the SBHS population to ask what students, teachers, and administration thought of modified block schedule, a wide range of opinions were expressed. One of the many beloved teachers at SBHS, Mrs. Maggie Light, shared that she loves the new schedule and hopes we never go back. As a calculus teacher, Mr. Johnston takes full advantage of the extra instructional time. He em-

phasized that “students often are right on the edge of getting a topic; the extra time gives us time to actually talk about the topic, dig deeper and hopefully make connection in one day.” He also felt that the seminar period can be incredibly valuable as, “true intervention makes a serious difference in students lives,” because the someone caring for his or her academic work can be difference between failing or succeeding. One of our newest members of the administrative team, Ms. Tiffany Carson, sees the seminar period as a great time to, “get help from their teachers, catch up on their homework, check on missing assignments, as well as review for tests” and to simply give students the time they need during the day to succeed academically.

However students have mixed opinions about the change to their weekly schedules. One student said, “There isn’t a lot to do in class, you just sit there doing nothing.” This student wishes to stay anonymous.

In contrast, some students find that some teachers have effectively made the longer periods have improved the classroom experience. “Ms. Woods has done an exceptional job at making the hour and a half go by seemingly because of her use of fun physic experiments as well as making sure we have things to work on so we aren’t mindlessly sitting in class” said Senior Lourda Weger. Other students were so-so about block schedule. Freshman Quincy Ruggieri said “I like that we have late start and that I don’t have to do PE everyday, but I don’t think it benefits the school as a whole because it confuses everyone.” Freshman Maddy Scheinberg disagreed and said “Block schedule is beneficial because it gives students that are struggling more help and you get more time in the mornings.” She agrees with Mrs. Light and hopes it doesn’t change.

As anyone can see, this is a very contentious topic at SBHS, and a process

that is just in its initial phase. Teachers and admin are working diligently to provide the test and most efficient system for students, but as with any new system, there will be hiccups at first.

As college application due dates loom closer and closer, the incessant questioning of what we will be majoring in begin to plague us. For some of you, you’ve known what you’ve wanted to do for years now, but for others like myself, you have no idea what you want to study. For half of the schools I’m applying to, I have declared a major; for the rest of the schools I am completely undecided. To tell you the truth, I don’t know what I want to do, and I think that’s okay.

I’ve sat through countless dinners where I have to struggle through a conversation about what I’m going to major in (it’s the what do you want to be when you grow up? Syndrome). One night, I was at dinner with a group of adults. The woman turned to me, smiled, and asked, “so what will you be majoring in?”

A brief, awkward, and all-too-common silence hung over the tables as

everyone turned to me expectantly.

From that moment, there were two different paths I could take. If I replied that I was undecided, there would be a brief, grey silence where the adult wouldn’t know what to say, or how to continue. A lot of head nodding and knowing glances, and then a change of subject.

They expect me to have my entire life figured out at the age of seventeen. This begins much earlier, as far back as The Ten Year Plan. The anxiety and fear of uncertainty has become institutionalized.

If I were to take the alternate path of answering with a major that I’m thinking about, their inquiry would shift immediately as to what my desired career path is. I have no idea. I’m not supposed to know.

College is where you go and try out many different interests until you find the one that best fits you.

Interests change. According to a survey from the Future Workplace, ninety-one percent of people born

between 1977 and 1997 expect to stay in a job for less than three years. That means that people will have over fifteen jobs in their lifetime. The idea of career hopping and job hopping can create greater diversity and greater job fulfillment in a person’s life, and the idea that we as teenagers don’t know what we want to do in college parallels adults’ uncertainty in their lives. In my opinion, knowing exactly what you want to do at this point in life shuts off your ability to see different opportunities and paths when they present themselves. All I’m saying is that if you know exactly what you want to do right at this point in time, that’s great and I’m envious of you. But I’m also saying that if you don’t know what you want to major in right now, that’s okay; we have the next four years to figure it out.

BY TYLER GREENWALD When first walking on to the Santa Barbara High School campus, one cannot help but recognize the beautifully detailed historical architecture that the front of our school displays. The green trees, complemented by the golden structure, naturally ignites the feeling of school spirit as well as the culture behind being a Don. Built in 1924, the building has maintained its captivating aesthetic appearance despite multiple restorations that have taken place over the years, and is now ranked among the top 10 most beautiful high school campuses according to a variety of different websites. The 18th century Spanish-influenced landmark spans across a 40-acre plot of land and continues to act as its own admissions office, attracting potential attendees due simply to its beauty.

Living with Host Parents

As a European exchange student taking a year abroad, you will have the option to live either with a host family and attend a public school, or to enroll in a boarding school.

Most of the kids studying abroad decide to live with a host family to immense themselves into the culture of the country. At first the idea of living with a host family is enticing.

But when you think about it a little bit more, you realize that they are complete strangers. The idea of having dinner with them every evening and speaking a foreign language seems unusual, and takes a lot of getting used to!

Living with a host family is a great way to connect countries, cultures and people.

At the end of the exchange year you will have a new family on the other side of the world.

My first experience with a host family was not that great. There were problems, for example: I had to share a room with my international host sister and the room was way too small - here was no place to study. I decided to change host families and I am happy now in my new one. They are caring, and kind, and they treat me like a real family member.

Hosting an international student is a big decision. You have trust a

teenager that you never met before.

They will sleep in your house, have dinner with you and go on family trips with you. You are responsible for their rules, and curfews - and sometimes yours are different than what they are used to. I think it is also really important that you make plans with the students and that you are willing to show them a lot about the place where you live. Especially when they arrive, because they don’t know the area or the people. It would be good to take them out for dinner, lunch or breakfast and also do family trips or holidays.

My experience with my new host family has been wonderful. They are really outgoing and are willing

to introduce me to new sights.

They also make plans, like whale watching and skiing this winter in northern California.

When the host family plans outings and cultural events to attend, the student feels like they are a part of the family. There will always be ups and downs, but you and your host family should try to make the best out of it so you will both have a wonderful year together. Maybe one day they will even visit you in your hometown sometime after the year abroad is over.

I think it is an amazing experience, and you make memories you will never forget!

BY SABLE LAYMAN Honestly before coming to the concert Saturday night, I had no idea who this band was. From my research, I found that they were an alternative rock band from Washington, but other than that I knew nothing, not even a single song. So what prompted me to go Saturday night? Truthfully, I went for the great seats and the free food generously given to us by the Santa Barbara Bowl Foundation. I did not think, however, that I would be completely blown away by the band, which I was. After strenuously walking up the hill to the main stage, we found our seats and were pleasantly surprised when we saw we were sitting in row K. This row is the perfect place to be if you want to listen and enjoy music without being disrupted by intoxicated fifty year olds. We arrived as the opening act Best Coast was coming to an end. They played one of their most popular songs, “Boyfriend,” as

the sun was setting over Santa Barbara. Unlike Death Cab, Best Coast is a more recently formed band, beginning in 2009 in Los Angeles. Their music style is indie pop mixed with American rock, and by their song titles, they are die hard Californians.

Once they closed, we waited for Death Cab to come on for about half an hour. This gave us time to get some refreshments and observe the types of people who came to the concert (which is always interesting). From my observations, Death Cab appeals to a younger crowd; there were few people over the age of fifty. After half an hour, we went back to our seats and the band opened with “No Room in Frame.” Their first song was more upbeat than the rest, and I was intrigued by the light show and their sets.

Many times, they used strobe lights and green tinted lights to liven up the audience; the lights were an extreme success. From what I learned throughout the concert, they played songs from their new album and

songs they made over fifteen years ago when they first originated, which was nice for the long term fans. I also enjoyed how there wasn’t much commentary throughout the show, and that they had enough music to play

Every year, talented Santa Barbara High School students participate in the annual PTSA Reflections contest, which was started in 1969 to help promote the arts in schools nationwide. Santa Barbara High school has participated in the contest for the about the past six years, annually receiving hundreds of submissions, and advancing students to the county, sta-

te, and even national levels. Each year the contest has a unique theme, this year’s being “Let Your Imagination Fly.” Applicants have a wide variety of mediums in which they can express this theme including: literature, film, photography, visual art, dance choreography, and even music composition. From the VADA and MAD programs to a bounty of talented writers in SBHS’s AP Literature and Language classes, SBHS is home to a large

Harmer swam in some dirty water up in the Santa Barbara mountains and were afraid they would now become superheroes. He and Nick decided they’d be “Sweat Man” and “Character Flaws Man.” After this short bit, they played one of their most popular songs, “I Will Follow You Into the Dark.” I sat there and watched hundreds of fans sing along to the song and immerse themselves in the music. One thing I found interesting about the concert was that not many people were on their phones over the course of the night; instead they were listening to the music and actually enjoying the night without having being tied to technology. All in all, Death Cab for Cutie and Best Coast created a wonderful night filled with great music and humorous commentary. If they come back to Santa Barbara, I highly recommend you go see them.

PTSA Reflections contest returns to SBHS

Over the years, the most popular categories have been photography, visual art, and literature. Connell emphasized that the “the main purpose of the contest is to promote the arts with students, and is a great first step to prepare for submitting art in a competitive field.” Connell explained that the committee is “really pushing to get more people to submit music theory pieces, as well as work from special needs students.” Even musical artists have the opportunity to express themselves with the contest!

Just last year, senior Julia Kupiec submitted a painting which advanced all the way to nationals in the visual arts category. Students of all artistic levels are encouraged to submit their work, which will be evaluated by a committee of PTSA members.

The winner will receive a cash prize and advance to the next round. If you have a favorite piece of art or are interested in the contest, simply pick up a entry form from Assistant Principal Ortega’s office. Submissions for the contest are due October 15, 2015.

Choir gets a La Facelift

Year to year you can expect many things at Santa Barbara High School to change- teachers come and go, administrators and staff are hired or retired and programs that are historically personality- driven find a new leader. Last year the band program came under a dynamic, new leadership with the hire of Santa Barbara High School alumni, Kearney Van Der Sal, and this year’s hire promises to be equally dynamic. Ms. Mary LaFace is the bright new face and director of the vocal department. LaFace, vocal music graduate of UC Irvine, says that coming to SBHS was just the opportunity she was looking for after teaching choir in the bay area for at least three years. She admits that being hired on such short notice was difficult, but that she is piecing the program together and making progress. As head of the vocal department, LaFace directs several choirs including Madrigals A Capella, Esperanza a woman’s, Invictus, and Women’s Ensemble open to all who want take part. LaFace is excited about all the choirs and says, “They are doing great, especially for this early in the

year! They have a great sound so far and I’m really excited for the rest of the year and where we are going to be able to go as a choir.” LaFace explains that she is not looking to change the program drastically this year but she does have plans for the future to increase interest and a more varies repertoire. The choir program will debut their beautiful voices on October 9th in Music in the Meadow. This year’s repetiteur consists of songs from movies and musicals including Pink Panther, Wicked, Newsies, Sister Act and many more!

Pablo Hammack, Rock Star SBHS freshman and the world of competitive rock climbing

BY ANGEL CORONA Pablo Hammack isn’t your everyday high school athlete — he’s a rock climber. After visiting the Ventura Rock Gym at age 11, Pablo was instantly intrigued and found his passion in the sport of rock climbing.

Now as a freshman at SBHS, Pablo spends nearly ten hours week training both indoors, at the Santa Barbara Rock Gym, and outdoors, in the Santa Barbara hills. Pablo specializes in bouldering; a type of climbing that involves climbing twenty feet with no harness, where the climber must complete “problems” through a series of difficult movements on various boulders. These problems are rated by difficulty with a system called the “V Scale” ranging from V0 to V16, V0 being the easiest. Currently, Pablo is able to complete up to V11 climbs and is constantly working to complete tougher and tougher climbs.

Pablo competes annually at the

American Bouldering Series, a competition that can ultimately enter climbers into a worldwide climbing series. In 2013 and 2014 Pablo advanced all the way to Nationals where he placed eleventh and twelfth place, respectively, out of thousands of competitors. At these competitions Pablo is put into an isolation room with the other competitors, to ensure that no competitors have an advantage as to how to complete the climbs over others. The competitors are given five minutes to complete a single climb on an artificial climbing wall, then five minutes to rest, switching on and off until they have completed between six and ten climbs.

Outside of competing Pablo enjoys climbing for pure leisure. He loves that climbing gets him outside where he can enjoy nature, and challenges him physically, keeping him in good physical shape. Often Pablo will go to premier climbing destinations in the Santa Barbara Area, such

as “The Brickyard”, in the evenings after school and on weekends. Pablo also spends a substantial amount of time at the Santa Barbara Rock Gym, which opened just over three years ago, just around the time Pablo became interested in climbing. “There are a lot of new rock climbing gyms popping up around and the sport has become more popular,” said Pablo.

Pablo also travels to world class climbing destinations including Bishop, California, where he climbs alongside others who travel from all parts of the world. Aside from bouldering, Pablo has done some climbing with harnesses and ropes on much higher and steeper climbs.

Pablo expressed that climbing is an incredibly “positive and healthy habit one can use to overcome obstacles and overall health and wellbeing.”

Dons Plow through South Coast Tournament with four consecutive wins

BY TYLER GREENWALD The Santa Barbara boys water polo team got off to a hot start and never slowed down at the South Coast Tournament last weekend, securing four consecutive victories over the course of two days.

Of the four wins, two were last minutes squeakers against Villa Park, which ended in a 6-5 decision, and Edison, which was a 16-14 result. Adam Gross put up a stellar performance right alongside Rhodes in the matchup against Edison as he snatched four steals, dished out six assists, and found the back of the net three times. Santa Barbara, currently ranked fourth CIF Division 2 will travel to face a challenging Rio Mesa on Tuesday at 5:15.

Dons suffer second consecutive loss with 37-28 defeat against Royal

BY TYLER GREENWALD The Santa Barbara boys football team got itself into a hole in the first half, and couldn’t dig itself out as the Dons suffered an excruciating 3728 defeat at the hands of Royal in a non-league road matchup last Friday.

Santa Barbara got off to an impressive start early in the season, sweeping their first three games with ease, but have been struggling ever since, faltering their last two games against two talented teams.

“The last two games haven’t been even close to our best,” said quarterback Brent Peus. “Against Rio Mesa we lost but were still performing well offensively, but our offense kind of fell apart in this one, especially in the first half.”

The first touchdown of the game came from the opposition but Santa Barbara quickly answered back after a solid drive put them on the one yard line, it was running back Sean Babcock who turned it into six with a one-yard scamper, thus tying the score at 7-7.

The Dons were able to stop the Highlanders on the second drive, which gave Brent Peus and co. the chance to take the lead; and Santa Barbara did exactly that as Peus connected with wide receiver Mason Bigelow in the end zone on a six-yard quick slant.

“We were able to come out and make plays early on but then we just got flat,” said wide receiver Tick Jellison. “We were making mistakes which us unlike us and that’s when the game started to get away from us.

Subsequent to Royal knotting the score at 14 apiece, a pivotal momentum shift occurred when a long snap flew over the head of Dons punter Jeremiah Nicholson, which resulted in a safety, giving the Highlanders a 16-14 lead. That prompted further scoring for Royal as they scored on a 46-yard pass on the following drive.

Things continued to get worse for Santa Barbara as the Highlanders’ defense got in the way of a pass from Peus. They were then able to cap off the first half with another long 36-

yard score to secure a formidable 3014 halftime lead.

“The first half obviously didn’t go how we thought it would but were still in good spirits at the half,” said Peus. “We knew we were capable of bouncing back and we strung together some solid offensive possessions but it just wasn’t enough.”

The Dons came out of the locker room determined to cut down the deficit, and were able to do so as Peus hit Bigelow on another slant route, which the speedy wide out then turned into a 66-yard score.

“We were on our own 40-yard line. I ran a flat angle, so the safety wouldn’t make a play,” said Bigelow.

“When Brent threw it, I split the two defenders and picked up a block from Sean and then just ran. It was a great team play.”

The Dons converted a 2-point coversion to close the gap to a one-possession deficit at 30-22. Bigelow finished with 10 passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns on the night.

Royal tacked on another seven points before running back Isai Figueroa carried one in for what later

proved to be the final touchdown of the game. The final score was 37-28 in favor of the opposition.

The loss drops Santa Barbara to a 3-2 record, and will face a challenging Pacifica team tonight but gets to do so in its own Peabody Stadium.

“We’re definitely going to zero in on making changes on the defensive side of the ball as we prepare for Pacifica, which hopefully will have a big impact” said Bigelow. “Offensively, we just need to keep doing what we have been all year. If we do that I think we’ll have a good shot at the win.”

Royals prevail over Dons in Rivals snap Dons’ Channel League cross-town rivalry matchup winning streak

BY TYLER GREENWALD The Santa Barbara girls volleyball team rallied from a two game deficit, but was unable to complete the comeback en route to a 27-29, 19-25, 26-24, 21-25 loss against San Marcos at the Thunderhut on Tuesday.

This marked the first league game between any two cross-town rivalry teams in the area.

Jessyca Beksa combined to rack up 40 kills, knocking down 19 and 21 respectively, nine of which came in the third set alone. Megan Seabury played a solid match at libero for the Dons, tallying 22 digs.

“Jessyca and I were just trying to be smart with our swings,” said Weger.

“We stayed aggressive and aimed for the corners. The setters were doing a great job dishing out different types of sets to get their blockers off balance so that really helped us offensively.”

Santa Barbara put up a strong performance in the opening set behind a rowdy crowd and earned itself a set point at 25-24. However the Dons were unable to close and after a backand-fourth affair, the Royals finally capped off the set with a big hit off a block.

The second set remained close in the beginning, prior to San Marcos taking a commanding 24-17 lead.

“Going into the third game we

knew we were still confident, especially after seeing how close the first two games were,” said Emily Robertson. “We made it a priority to step up our intensity and start lining up our blocks well with Chloe Allen (San Marcos’ big hitter and UCSB commit) while digging up everything we couldn’t get our hands on. We won the serving and passing battle in the third and it kept them on their heels for the most of the set.”

The Dons were able to regroup and secure the third set, despite multiple comebacks spurred by the Royals throughout. Santa Barbara corrected its mistake made in the first when faced with a tie game situation at 24-24, this time closing it out off of two consecutive errors made by the opposition.

In the subsequent set, the Dons were able to maintain their momentum that was attained in the third as a late 4-0 run for San Marcos closed out the game and prompted a roar from the Thunderhut.

The Dons are now 1-1 and league and will go on to host Ventura on Thursday, as they hope to turn their neutral record into a winning one.

“I think we surprised a lot of people with how competitively we played against them,” said Weger. “So now were just going to try and stay in the same mindset we had against SM in the next game and hopefully pull out a win.”

BY TYLER GREENWALD Burdened by the loss of many varsity seniors from last years CIF semifinal team, as well as long term head coach Greg Tebbe, the Santa Barbara High girls’ tennis team has been struggling to find a rhythm.

Most recently, the Dons were beaten 15-3 by San Marcos in a ri-

valry Channel League matchup, thus marking an unfortunate end to the Dons’ previously held 77-match winning streak in league. Santa Barbara’s last Channel League defeat came in 2005 against Dos Pueblos and its last loss to the Royals was in 1998 when the two rivals shared the title.

Cade Sorensen, the only returning starter from last years team, led the Dons as she swept two of her three

sets from the No.1 singles berth. Her only loss came against Yuka Perera in a 6-3 decision, giving up a 2-1 lead early on.

Claire Stotts paired up with Claudia Brewer to get Santa Barbara a third set in the doubles department to add to the score.

Shortly after, Dos Pueblos overcame the Dons 13-5, its first time prevailing over Santa Barbara in 34 years.

In that one it was Brooke Morison and Eva Kershner who reeled in points for the Dons, faltering only one of their three doubles sets. The duo of Brewer and Hannah Echt completed a 7-5 set win. Sorensen was the only one able to come up with points in the singles department, dropping only one set.

Santa Barbara will seek revenge on Tuesday, as it will face off against the Royals for the second and final meeting the two this season, this time competing at the Santa Barbara tennis courts.
