Mega cruise ship Icon of the Seas arrives in Ponce

The majestic Icon of the Seas, a peerless mega cruise ship recently unveiled by Royal Caribbean, made its debut in Puerto Rico on Wednesday, arriving from the bustling Port of Miami.

The ship docked at the Port of the Americas in Ponce, where it was welcomed by a host of officials, including Gov. Jenniffer González Colón, Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC) Executive Director Willianette Robles Cancel and Ponce Mayor Marlese Sifre Rodríguez. Those officials were joined by representatives from various municipalities and the commonwealth government. The Icon of the Seas’ three planned visits in this fiscal year are anticipated to contribute a significant economic impact of around $4 million to the region.

“The docking of the Icon of the Seas, recognized as the world’s largest cruise ship, in the historic city of Ponce represents a transformative moment for the economic and tourism landscape of southern Puerto Rico,” the governor said. “This milestone is a testament to our commitment to decentralizing tourism, showcasing the unique potential of every region on our beloved island. This event will substantially aid small and medium-sized enterprises, providing direct support for thousands of families in Puerto Rico. Today, we present Puerto Rico to the world -- a vibrant, diverse destination eager to embrace tourists with open arms and exceptional hospitality.”

Robles Cancel added that it was a “monumental” day for the island’s cruise industry, “which plays a vital role in our tourism and economy, facilitating thousands of direct and indirect jobs through local businesses eager to serve our guests.”

“At the Tourism Company, we are devoted to unlocking the potential of all our tourist ports and initiating initiatives that will draw more cruise ships and elevate visitor numbers across every corner of the island,” she said.

The Porta Caribe region, the PRTC director noted, is brimming with untapped tourism potential, making it a focal point for collaborative efforts “between the public and private sectors […] aimed at sparking economic activity throughout all municipalities in the region.”

Each arrival of a cruise ship to the island’s ports paves the way for expanding the variety of excursions offered, consequently generating heightened economic activity in popular tourist destinations, Robles Cancel added.

Sifre Rodríguez, the Ponce mayor, pointed out that the “docking of the world’s largest cruise ship in our city wasn’t a stroke of luck; it is the result of months of dedicated planning and collaboration among municipal government, state agencies, and the private sector.”

“Ponce stands ready to shine brightly on the global stage,” she said. “This historic moment signals a remarkable shift for tourism and economic growth in southern Puerto Rico.”

Robles Cancel, meanwhile, praised the effective collaboration between the PRTC, state agencies, municipalities, operators, and tourism service providers, which ensured seamless procedures and delivered a high-quality experience for visitors. The coordination encompassed various cultural and musical programs, alongside logistical support for transporting tourists to key attractions within the port vicinity.

As the Icon of the Seas arrived at the port, the air was filled with the lively sounds of folk music, creating a festive atmosphere as visitors and crew members prepared to embark on the well organized activities and excursions throughout the day.

The Icon of the Seas set sail from its homeport in Florida on Saturday, embarking on a seven-day voyage that also included stops at St. Maarten and Royal Caribbean’s idyllic private island in Haiti, before making its way back to Miami this Saturday.

Department of Education eliminates grant for PBS children’s shows

The White House effort to cut funding for NPR and PBS is beginning to take effect. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which backs NPR and PBS, said in a statement earlier this week that the Department of Education had terminated a federal grant program that funded shows for children.

The abrupt cancellation of the grant program, called Ready To Learn, resulted in a loss of $23 million that would have gone to children’s educational shows and games. The first installment of the terminated grant was awarded by the first Trump administration in 2020.

Patricia Harrison, the president and CEO of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, criticized the move, saying that nearly all parents have had their children watch shows funded by the program.

“We will work with Congress and the administration to preserve funding for this essential program,” she said in a statement.

The Ready To Learn grant, which is administered by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and allocated to PBS and local stations, has historically funded well-known children’s

programs, including “Sesame Street,” “Reading Rainbow” and “Clifford the Big Red Dog.” The five-year grant was set to expire at the end of September.

In a statement, Madi Biedermann, a spokesperson for the Department of Education, said that the Ready To Learn grants were funding “racial justice educational programming.”

“The Trump Department of Education will prioritize funding that supports meaningful learning and improving student outcomes, not divisive ideologies and woke propaganda,” the statement said.

Last week, the White House issued an executive order requiring the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and federal agencies to immediately stop funding to NPR and PBS. Both organizations vowed to oppose the order, which they said would deprive Americans across the United States of news and educational programming.

The order was part of a decades-long campaign by Republicans to weaken public media in the United States. In recent months, Republicans introduced a bill to defund NPR and PBS and made plans to claw back congressional funding for the organizations. Last week, the White House tried to fire board directors for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a move that the corporation opposed in court.

VA secretary says slashing 80,000 jobs is a goal, not a firm plan

Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins pushed back on reports that his department would slash more than 80,000 jobs, arguing that figures cited in internal department memos were merely goals and accusing Democrats of fearmongering by saying the cuts would harm veterans’ care.

“Our goal is a 15% decrease — could be more, could be less,” Collins told the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee in his first Capitol Hill testimony since being confirmed to President Donald Trump’s Cabinet. He added that “no one has discussed firing doctors and firing nurses.”

Collins said that Democrats warning that the cuts could weaken veterans’ health care were trying to “scare my veterans and scare my employees.”

In heated exchanges with Democrats, Collins refused to say which jobs might be cut, arguing that it would be “malpractice” to publicize decisions not yet finalized.

Democratic and independent lawmakers took umbrage at his caginess, accusing him of trying to cover up the impact of the cuts.

“The fact that you won’t tell us what the contracts are that are being renegotiated makes me think there are things in those contracts that maybe you don’t want us to know about,” said Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, adding that “the goal should be efficiency, not a quota.”

Sen. Maggie Hassan, D-N.H., told Collins that “most people, when they state a goal, decide they’d like to reach it,” before

adding, “they cannot set out a goal and then get angry at us for asking what the impacts of that goal, of those cuts, would be.”

Democrats were not alone in voicing concerns. While most of the panel’s Republicans offered support for Collins, Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., the panel’s chair, warned him that cuts should not be the goal.

“It ought not to be a set number you’re trying to reach,” he said. “It ought to be about right-sizing the department.”

During the hearing, Democrats questioned whether the Trump administration had thought out how the cuts would affect efficiency. Some argued that preserving roles for doctors and nurses while laying off claims processors would still delay care. Others said that the administration’s efforts to centralize payroll systems and digitize health records would be compromised if information technology specialist jobs were eliminated.

Many cited examples of the department having to rehire employees who were initially let go as evidence that they could not trust the administration to plan cuts without keeping Congress apprised of the specifics.

“It’s sloppy, and you know it,” Sen. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., told Collins, adding that when “you have fired people and then they’ve been rehired, that’s not a secret plan.”

Collins acknowledged that errors had been made and said that staffers rehired to certain positions had since been exempted from cuts. But he denied that any of the cuts had undermined the department’s work.

Under questioning from Moran, Collins highlighted the example of the Veterans Crisis Line, arguing that he had always

“protected all those who actually answered the phone.” He said that he personally decided to rehire all laid-off staff “because we didn’t want anybody to falsely accuse that we were not answering the line.”

He also said that the Trump administration planned to invest more in health care services, mentioning the $5 billion in extra VA funding that the Trump administration requested from Congress last week for the 2026 fiscal year.

Columbia lays off nearly 180 people because of Trump research cuts

Columbia University announced earlier this week that nearly 180 people whose salaries had been funded by federal research grants would be laid off, as the effect of the Trump administration’s cuts on the campus deepens.

Citing intense strain on Columbia’s finances and research mission, Claire Shipman, the university’s acting president, said in the announcement that Columbia would also be “running lighter footprints of research infrastructure” in some areas affected by the cuts. The university, she added, is continuing to negotiate with the federal government for the return of the grants and is seeking alternative sources of funding.

“We have had to make deliberate, considered decisions about the allocation of our financial resources,” Shipman wrote in a note to the campus, which was also signed by other administrators. “Those decisions also impact our greatest resource, our people. We understand this news will be hard.”

A Trump administration antisemitism task force cut $400 million in funding in March because of what it described as the school’s failure to protect Jewish students from harassment. It demanded that Columbia make changes in how it functions for the money to be restored. Columbia complied with a first round

of demands, but negotiations on returning the money continue.

More than 300 multiyear research grants have been cut significantly, many of them in medical research. Columbia received about $1.3 billion in federal research funds in 2023, with the National Institutes of Health providing $747 million of that. An additional $206 million came from other programs within the Health and Human Services Department.

Columbia had been temporarily paying the salaries of some of the affected researchers as departments came up with plans on how to weather the cuts, but the announcement Tuesday signaled that effort was ending. Mov ing forward, scientists at Columbia can apply for grants for a limited time to complete their research and support graduate students who would otherwise be laid off.

Tamara Sussman, a researcher in psychi atry at Columbia, had a federal grant canceled in March for research that examined the consequences of structural racism on substance use risk in Puerto Rican adolescents. The research assistant that she had recently hired was among those let go.

Waiting for the smoke that heralds a new pope

After the men who will select the next pope were locked inside the Sistine Chapel without cellphones Wednesday, the only thing left to do was wait for them to send a signal to the outside world. By smoke.

The highly secret voting began inside what is possibly one of the world’s most secure vaults in the early evening, with the 133 cardinals tasked with deciding who will succeed Pope Francis writing candidates’ names on voting cards by hand, trying to disguise their handwriting.

Outside in St. Peter’s Square, thousands of the faithful, the curious and the vacationing gathered to await the news of whether the cardinals had managed to elect a papal successor. Word came at 9 p.m., in the form of black smoke billowing from a chimney installed last week on the roof of the chapel.

If the smoke had been white, it would have meant that the cardinals had chosen the first new pope in a dozen years in just one round of voting, a feat not seen for centuries.

But the black smoke, created when the cardinals’ ballots are incinerated in a cast-iron stove, means they’ll have to try again.

“We are cold; we’re hungry; we’re thirsty, but yet we can’t move,” said the Rev. Peter Mangum, 61, a priest at the Church of Jesus the Good Shepherd in Monroe, Louisiana. He and three other priests had been in the square for about seven hours, and it was Magnum’s fourth time waiting for news of a new pope.

He had stood in the same spot for the elections of John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis, and he wasn’t going to budge until he knew Wednesday’s news. “We had to make sure the smoke was black,” he said.

It took two days to elect Francis in 2013 and Pope Benedict XVI in 2005. No conclave in the 20th or 21st centuries has lasted more than five days.

In an era when news travels instantly around the world, the patience-requiring wait for the smoke in St. Peter’s Square is a ritual that dates back to the 19th century.

For some, the anxiety was intense. “I think there’s more nervousness among the people outside than among the cardinals themselves,” said Tania Radesca, who arrived at the square at 1 p.m.

Radesca, who is from Venezuela, had volunteered to help during the Jubilee, a year of pilgrimage that happens every 25 years, and she arrived in Rome just over a month ago. She was in St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday and caught a final glimpse of Francis in his popemobile.

He died a day later.

Those who arrived early to score spots at the barricades closest to the front of St. Peter’s Basilica draped flags from their home countries along the barriers and befriended each other as they settled in. Others camped out on yoga mats or picnic blankets.

Many had traveled a long way, specifically for the conclave. Rodrigo Pinto, 43, a retired karate instructor, flew 23 hours from Guatemala, landing Tuesday afternoon and heading straight to St. Peter’s Square on Wednesday so he could wait for the first sign of smoke.

Pinto, who was wearing a rosary, said: “I want to be a part of something I have always seen on TV, in documentaries, on the internet.” After standing in the rain in the morning and under the hot sun in the afternoon, he said, “Three hours ago, it was like hell. Sorry, St. Peter.”

The day of waiting began at 10 a.m. when Giovanni Battista Re, the spry 91-year-old dean of the College of Cardinals, presided over a Mass inside St. Peter’s Basilica and implored the voting cardinals to choose “a pope who knows how best to awaken the consciences of all, and the moral and spiritual energies in today’s society.”

As the cardinals gave each other the sign of peace during the service, Re hugged Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican secretary of state under Francis and considered a leading candidate to succeed him. A microphone caught Re wishing Parolin

Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, another potential candidate who appeared with a fresh haircut, warmly shook his peers’ hands. Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline, the archbishop of Marseille and also considered a papal contender, stopped for a prayer in front of the reliquary containing the remains of Pope John XXIII — a hero to many liberal Catholics for his efforts to modernize the church.

After lunch at the Casa Santa Marta, the lodging house inside the Vatican where the electors will stay throughout the conclave, the cardinals walked to the Sistine Chapel. As they proceeded into the chapel, they chanted the Litany of the Saints, while a choir hauntingly invoked the names of the saints. The cardinals replied with “Ora pro nobis,” or “Pray for us.” Outside in the square, many watching on the large video screens flanking the basilica swayed and echoed the cardinals’ chant.

Inside the Sistine Chapel, name tags for the cardinals had been placed on the long tables where they would vote. Francis named many more cardinals than his two predecessors, some from countries far from the Vatican, and many of the papal electors — and potential popes — do not know one another.

Around 5:45 p.m., Archbishop Diego Giovanni Ravelli, the master of pontifical liturgical celebrations, announced “extra omnes,” a Latin phrase that means “everybody out.” The giant wooden doors were closed, leaving the 133 cardinal electors — those under the age of 80 who can vote in the secret ballot — locked inside. The cardinals will not be allowed to leave the Vatican until a two-thirds majority agrees on the next pope. Phones, internet, television and any contact from outside the Vatican walls are prohibited, a custom enforced to discourage the process from dragging on.

Some veteran electors believed there would be prolonged voting. “Bring a book,” Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of New York said he advised other cardinals, in an interview Tuesday. The conclave began 16 days after Francis’ death April 21. The significance of the moment was not lost even on those who had little knowledge of Catholicism.

Yuichiro Yamakoshi, 41, a Japanese tourist traveling with his wife, said that after touring the Vatican museums and walking through the doors of the four main basilicas that are usually open only during the Jubilee, he started to understand the power and influence of the faith. Although the couple had come to St. Peter’s Square on Tuesday with a guide, they returned Wednesday morning for a commemorative photo marking the conclave.

As the black smoke dissipated into the sky, all there was to do was wait for another day.

India strikes Pakistan but is said to have lost jets

India said early Wednesday that it had conducted several airstrikes on Pakistan, hailing a victory in the name of vengeance for the terrorist attack that killed 26 civilians in Kashmir last month.

But evidence was also growing that Indian forces may

have taken heavy losses during the operation. At least two aircraft were said to have gone down in India and the Indian-controlled side of Kashmir, according to three officials, local news reports and accounts of witnesses who had seen the debris of two.

region, in what it described as retaliation for a terrorist attack that killed 26 civilians in Kashmir. Pakistani military officials said more than 20 people had been killed and dozens injured after six places were hit on the Pakistani side of Kashmir and in Punjab province. Residents of the Indian side of Kashmir said at least 10 people had been killed in shelling from the Pakistani side since India carried out its strikes.

Cataño anuncia superávit de 12.6 millones de dólares y propone reprogramación presupuestaria

CATAÑO– El alcalde de Cataño, Julio Alicea Vasallo, anunció el miércoles que el Municipio logró un sobrante neto de 12.6 millones de dólares al cierre del año fiscal 2023-2024, fondos que serán integrados al presupuesto vigente si la Legislatura Municipal aprueba una propuesta de reprogramación sometida por el ejecutivo municipal.

“Este logro es evidencia de la eficiencia y disciplina fiscal con la que hemos manejado las finanzas de Cataño”, expresó Alicea Vasallo en declaraciones escritas.

El proyecto legislativo busca integrar los 12,674,426 dólares disponibles al presupuesto 2024-2025, con el propósito de fortalecer servicios municipales, emprender obras permanentes y realizar mejoras comunitarias. El sobrante representa el

100 por ciento de los recursos certificados tras liquidar el presupuesto anterior.

Según informó la administración municipal, Cataño no tiene deudas pendientes con excepción de los compromisos financieros del año corriente, tras haber saldado pasivos heredados de gestiones anteriores.

“Agradezco a todo el equipo municipal por su compromiso; gracias a su excelente labor, hoy no solo hemos eliminado las deudas del pasado, sino que contamos con un superávit que podremos reinvertir en el desarrollo integral de nuestro pueblo”, añadió Alicea Vasallo.

La reprogramación presupuestaria será evaluada por la Legislatura Municipal en su próxima sesión ordinaria. De aprobarse, permitirá canalizar los fondos hacia proyectos que, según la administración, responden directamente a necesidades prioritarias de los residentes de Cataño.

Radican cargos contra “Bizcocho” por cambiar cheques falsos en 14 sucursales bancarias

SAN JUAN – Agentes de la División de Investigaciones de Robo y Fraude a Instituciones Bancarias radicaron cargos contra Alessandro Marci Silverio, alias “Bizcocho”, de 39 años y residente de San Juan, por apropiarse ilegalmente de 40,000 dólares mediante el uso de cheques falsos y robo de identidad.

Según la investigación, los hechos ocurrieron en diciembre de 2023, cuando el imputado acudió a 14 sucursales del Banco Popular en el área metropolitana y cambió 14 cheques falsificados utilizando la identidad

El agente Omar Santos González consultó el caso con la fiscal Rosa Molina Pérez, de la División de Delitos Económicos del Departamento de Justicia, quien autorizó la radicación de cinco cargos: escalamiento agravado, apropiación ilegal grave, fraude, apropiación ilegal de identidad y falsificación de documentos.

La jueza Brenda Sala Rivera, del Tribunal de San Juan, encontró causa para arresto en todos los cargos y le impuso una fianza global de 81,000 dólares, la cual fue prestada mediante fiador privado. Silverio quedó citado para la vista preliminar el 20 de mayo de 2025.

‘James’ won the Pulitzer, but not without complications

When Percival Everett’s novel

“James” won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction Monday, it seemed like an obvious choice. Everett’s subversive reimagining of “Huckleberry Finn” had already landed critical acclaim and a string of literary honors, including the National Book Award and the Kirkus Prize.

But it turns out that “James” was not the top pick among the Pulitzer’s five fiction jury members. It wasn’t even in the top three, according to three people with knowledge of the process, who were not authorized to speak about the confidential deliberations.

In a surprising twist, the prize went to Everett after the Pulitzer committee’s board failed to reach a consensus on the three finalists that the fiction jury initially presented — Rita Bullwinkel’s “Headshot,” Stacey Levine’s “Mice 1961,” and Gayl Jones’ “The Unicorn Woman.”

The process that led to “James” winning wasn’t a matter of the board imposing its own selection, but the result of a procedural backstop designed to give the board more choices when it reaches an impasse on the first crop of finalists.

In a typical year, one of the three finalists is chosen. But when the 17 voting members of the board deliberated on the fiction finalists last Friday, none of the three choices received a majority vote. At that point, the board could have voted not to award a fiction prize this year, as it has on rare occasions. Or it could vote to consider a fourth choice, which had also been chosen by the fiction jury.

tion this year, after the board got the list of finalists and asked the jury for another title to consider. “James” got the necessary majority vote.

The procedure for widening the pool of candidates is outlined on the Pulitzer website, which notes that if the board is “dissatisfied with the nominations of any jury,” it can ask the chair for “other worthy entries.”

In 2012, no fiction award was given after the board failed to land on a winner — an outcome that outraged many in the literary world. In 2015, there were also four fiction finalists, with the prize going to Anthony Doerr’s “All the Light We Cannot See.”

Still, some observers expressed skepticism about this year’s process. In an article published Monday on the website Literary Hub, writer and bookseller Drew Broussard questioned whether this year the Pulitzer board had overruled the fiction jury’s selections of a “world-shaking all-woman trio of finalists in a year when one novel by a male writer has taken up quite a lot of the available oxygen.”

This year’s jury members for the fiction prize included novelists Bryan Washington, Jonathan Lethem, Ayana Mathis and Laila Lalami, and critic Merve Emre. Several of the jury members declined to comment on their deliberations; others did not respond.

Emre, who served as the chair of this year’s fiction jury, referred an inquiry to the Pulitzer board. An administrator for the Pulitzers said that the board doesn’t discuss its deliberations.

But Emre shared some withering views on the state of the book business on Instagram, where she noted that the jury waded through roughly 600 books and selected four that

they felt exemplified the prize’s criteria as “distinguished fiction by an American author, preferably dealing with American life.”

“It was difficult to avoid fatigue and cynicism,” Emre wrote, adding, “American publishing is not in a healthy state; the more directly its judgments are determined by the market and the mass media — the more sources of funding, like the NEA, disappear — the sicker it will become: homogenous, inert, inexpert, cheap.”

Many in the literary world celebrated the Pulitzer board’s decision as a fitting outcome for a writer who has pushed the boundaries of fiction for decades. Much of Everett’s work has been published by independent presses, including “Telephone,” which was a Pulitzer finalist in 2021, though Doubleday, a major publisher, put out “James.”

The three finalists offer a snapshot of some of the bold and experimental work happening on the fringes of American fiction.

Bullwinkel’s “Headshot,” about eight teenage female boxing contestants in Nevada, was praised by the New York Times critic Dwight Garner as “so enveloping to read that you feel, at times, that you are writing it in your own mind.” In “The Unicorn Woman,” Jones, one of America’s most influential Black women writers, tells a surreal story about a World War II veteran who falls in love with a Black woman who has a spiral horn growing from her forehead and works at a carnival side show.

Levine’s novel, “Mice 1961,” published by Verse Chorus Press, introduces two orphaned sisters through the voice of their housekeeper. In a Washington Post review, novelist Lydia Millet called Levine “a gifted performance artist of literary fiction, part French existentialist and part comic bombthrower.”

Levine was dismissive of speculation over this year’s fiction machinations, noting in an email that, at a moment when diversity initiatives and public funding for the arts are at risk, the Pulitzer Prize stands for integrity — a quality worth celebrating.

“Percival’s book is so important in this regard,” Levine wrote in an email. “Is this really the time to fuss about what might or might not be gender politics in a literary contest?”

WIPR to broadcast Mother’s Day special Sunday

The Puerto Rico Corporation for Public Broadcasting (WIPR) will air the television special “From Mother to Mother,” a tribute to Puerto Rican mothers hosted by anchor Brenda Rivera, this Sunday, May 11, at 7 p.m.

“This program is a tribute to all mothers, especially those who have left an indelible mark on our lives,” WIPR President Luis Rodríguez Díaz said.

The special will present the testimonies of figures such as journalist Denisse Pérez, singer Melina León, Women’s Advocate Astrid Piñeiro Vázquez, presenter Angélique Burgos (La Burbu) and actress Yaiza Figueroa.

“From Mother to Mother” highlights the maternal figure as guidance, strength and love, and will include stories that many families can relate to, even those who have lost their mothers.

The broadcast can be tuned in through WIPR TV, Facebook Live and the PRTV+ digital platform.

POR EL PRESENTE EDICTO, se le notifica que se ha radicado en esta Secretaría por la parte demandante, Demanda sobre Cobro de Dinero, en la que se alega adeuda la suma de $1,873.97 de principal, más $121.80 de intereses al 13.45% anual acumulados, más cargos por demora $13.38, al 27 de enero de 2025, y de esa fecha en adelante acumula intereses a razón de $0.88 diarios, hasta su completo pago, más un 30% del principal del Pagaré estipulado para costas, gastos y honorarios de abogado y recargos acumulados todas cuyas sumas están líquidas y exigibles.
