The Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) delegation in the House of Representatives urged the island government on Wednesday to withhold information requested by federal authorities regarding nearly 6,000 undocumented immigrants who hold driver’s licenses.
The Trump administration has said it will pressure undocumented immigrants to leave the country by penalizing some of them with penalties of nearly $1,000 a day for every day they stay in the country illegally. So far, the administration has imposed $2 billion in fines on nearly 7,000 people.
“The government of Puerto Rico cannot continue to be complicit and turn a blind eye while the dignity of immigrant communities -- who are already fully integrated into our society and contribute in various areas of our lives -- is tarnished,” Rep. Adriana Gutiérrez Colón said.
Rep. Denis Márquez Lebrón noted that the PIP introduced Bill 331 in February to protect the fundamental rights of immigrant communities, following a request from the American Civil Liberties Union.
“The protection of human rights for all individuals, regardless of their immigration status or ethnic or national origin, must be a priority of the Legislative Assembly,” Márquez LeBron said. “We seek protections for our immigrant brothers and sisters, who are an integral part of Puerto Rican society.”
Rep. Nelie Lebrón Robles emphasized that collaborative efforts with federal agencies should not involve violations of constitutional rights.
“President Trump’s executive orders changed the priorities for immigration enforcement, but they did not alter constitutional protections, such as the right not to be arrested without a warrant,” she said. “Our communities are more prosperous, healthy, and safe when they can access essential services and exercise their fundamental rights without fear.”
The PIP delegation urged Gov. Jenniffer González Colón to issue clear instructions to ensure that information is not released without a warrant.

Cataño Mayor Julio Alicea Vasallo announced Wednesday that the municipality once again achieved 100% in the FEMA Fund Recovery Index, according to the report on the status of reconstruction for the second quarter of 2025, released by the Central Office of Recovery, Reconstruction, and Resilience.
“The report confirms that in Cataño we manage funds responsibly and transparently,” the mayor said in a written statement. “Every dollar that arrives is converted into a project that improves the quality of life of our people. We have a firm commitment to the development of our city and to rigorous compliance with federal requirements.”
The report has Cataño in first place among Puerto Rico’s 78 municipalities. Alicea Vasallo highlighted progress such as a Recovery and Execution Index of 68.5%, more than
$1.305 billion in active projects, and the publication of more than 340 contracting processes in the last quarter.
The mayor also pointed out that public-private collaboration and the commitment of local businesses allowed 62.5% of contractors to remain active in the reconstruction process.

In an ongoing effort to strengthen disaster preparedness and response, Aguadilla Mayor Julio Roldán Concepción on Wednesday presented the Municipal Emergency Operational Plan for the 2025 Hurricane Season.
The plan details the operational phases, mitigation strategies, logistics, supply delivery, community resilience, assistance, available resources, and action protocols to ensure the safety of Aguadilla residents in the event of any atmospheric event.
“The well-being of our people is our priority. That’s why we’ve developed a structured, strategic, and preventive plan that includes everything from mitigation actions to response and recovery protocols,” the mayor said. “With an investment of more than $4 million, we’ve provided
our Municipal Emergency Management Office with new equipment and resources to meet the needs of our people in the event of a natural emergency.”
The plan announced by Roldán Concepción includes several operational phases that establish specific actions to be taken 120 hours before the potential impact of a major storm and the immediate response to the areas most affected by it.
“We are prepared with equipment, trained personnel, and an inventory of supplies that will allow us to respond quickly and effectively before, during, and after the atmospheric phenomenon,” the mayor said. “The stages of our action plan include activating the Emergency Operations Center (EOC); checking shelters, communication systems, and supply logistics; and pre-identifying people with medical or other needs.”

Yesenia López Rosario, a citizen spokesperson and community leader in Orocovis, spoke out on Wednesday in response to the findings of the Office of the Comptroller of Puerto Rico, which she noted show a worrying lack of control, planning and transparency in the municipal administration of Orocovis between 2019 and 2024.
According to audit report OC-25-84, the municipality paid $195,592 for services that were not included in the formal contracts. The report highlights that the municipal finance director authorized the payments, despite the fact that the pre-auditors warned that the expenses would not proceed.
Also revealed in the audit report were: a duplicate payment of $8,502 for a truck rental; the dividing of $330,500 into three contracts to avoid the public auction process, thus violating the law and the principles of sound administration; the execution of work without the corresponding permits; and the late registration of contracts and amendments totaling $11
million, some with delays of up to a year, which limits the people’s access to essential public information.
“This report confirms what we have been denouncing for years,” said López, who ran unsuccessfully for mayor of Orocovis last year under the Popular Democratic Party banner. “In Orocovis there has been a clear lack of administrative capacity that can no longer be ignored. This is not an attack, it is a legitimate demand for transparency and good governance. The people deserve to know how their money is being used.”
López also emphasized that while the municipal budget has decreased, failures and administrative disorganization have been increasing, a clear sign that it is not just about budget constraints, but a lack of direction and commitment to public service.
“The people of Orocovis have the right to demand answers and corrective actions,” she said. “To supervise is not to disrespect, it is to exercise citizenship. Every mistake pointed out by the Comptroller directly affects the services and development of our communities.”
Corozal man sentenced to 25 years in prison for sexual exploitation of a minor
According to court records, between February 2020 and April 2022, the defendant used and coerced a minor between the ages of 12 and 14 to engage in sexual acts in order to produce explicit images using his cell phone.

U.S. District Court Presiding Judge Raúl Arias Marxuach sentenced Elvin Jhohanie Molina Rosado, 36, of Corozal, to 25 years in prison and 15 years of supervised release on Tuesday for child exploitation of a minor.
According to court records, between February 2020 and April 2022, Molina Rosado used and coerced a minor between the ages of 12 and 14 to engage in sexual acts in order to produce explicit images using his cell phone. In April 2022, the Puerto Rico Police referred the case to the Crimes Against Children Division of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), leading to his arrest and prosecution.
“This case demonstrates the Department of Justice’s determination to prosecute those who exploit and victimize
our children,” U.S. Attorney W. Stephen Muldrow said in a written statement.
HSI San Juan Special Agent in Charge Rebecca González-Ramos emphasized that “the exploitation of a minor is abhorrent” and that authorities are committed to eradicating such crimes.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jenifer Hernández Vega prosecuted the case with support from the Puerto Rico Police and as part of Project Safe Childhood, a federal initiative to combat child exploitation.
The Justice Department noted that the project mobilizes resources from federal, state, and local agencies to locate, arrest, and prosecute child abusers and rescue victims. More information about the initiative can be found at www. justice.gov/psc.

Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) Executive Director Mary Carmen Zapata stated in a radio interview Wednesday that if the LUMA Energy contract were canceled today, PREPA would not have the necessary resources to manage energy transmission and distribution (T&D).
Over the past four years, LUMA Energy has been the private operator of PREPA’s T&D system and is in charge of collecting rates from clients.
“Right now, we don’t have the resources,” she said. “I understand that the governor has all the cards on the table. She, along with the energy czar, is evaluating all options. If canceling the contract were a viable
option, they would certainly allocate the resources needed to fulfill that mission.”
Zapata said PREPA is working to regain control over the finances and administrative services that were transferred to LUMA during the energy system transition.
“Among the services that were agreed upon were all of the authority’s financial functions, including payments to suppliers, administration of databases and financial data, and management of transfers between bank accounts,” she noted. “It has been over a year since the Authority began implementing a computerized financial system and other administrative processes to resume these functions and finalize the agreement between LUMA and the Authority.”
Zapata, an engineer, asserted firmly
that PREPA would be able to meet energy demands during the upcoming hot summer months.
The energy czar acknowledged separately that there was an insufficiency of energy reserves.
“We currently have 3,300 megawatts of available capacity, thanks to the efforts made by the energy czar to bring online Unit 5 at Costa Sur and the combustion unit of Unit 6 at San Juan,” Zapata said. “In June, Unit 2 at Aguirre is expected to come online, adding about 400 megawatts. Additionally, in July, Steam Unit 4 at Palo Seco should come online, contributing another 200 megawatts. This will bring our total capacity to approximately 3,800 megawatts.”

Víctor Parés Otero, the chairman of the Government Committee in the island House of Representatives, recently met with Energy Czar Josué Colón Ortiz to discuss the measures being implemented by Genera Puerto Rico to prevent seaweed from entering the cooling systems of the San Juan, Palo Seco and Aguirre power plants.
During the conversation, Parés also spoke with Iván Báez, vice president of government and public affairs for Genera. Báez said the private operator of the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority’s (PREPA) legacy generation fleet is exploring the installation of boom systems to block sargassum from entering critical areas.
“Sargassum blooms are common in Puerto Rico each year, but this time they are more severe than in previous years,” Parés noted. “While people typically associate this
a
of
phenomenon with beaches and resorts, it’s important to note that sargassum can drift as far north as the metropolitan area near Levittown, potentially affecting the pumping systems of the San Juan and Palo Seco plants. It can also reach Salinas and the Aguirre power plant, which previously experienced issues related to sargassum.”
Last Friday, sargassum was observed near San Juan Bay and on Condado Beach.
At the end of September 2021, more than 100,000 customers lost power when unit number 1 of the Aguirre Combined Cycle Power Plant in Salinas went offline due to a “sargassum flood.” According to a report by PREPA, the algae clogged the plant’s filters and pipes, leading to the shutdown.
“In the past, we’ve encountered problems with sargassum entering pipes and pumping systems. Our goal is to prevent a recurrence of what happened four years ago,” the San Juan District 4 lawmaker said. “That’s why we discussed this issue

The White House formally asked Congress earlier this week to claw back more than $9 billion in federal funds that lawmakers had already approved for foreign aid and public broadcasting, seeking to codify spending cuts put forward by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency.
In a package compiled by the Office of Management and Budget, officials outlined 22 programs targeted by President Donald Trump in executive orders and by DOGE. The bulk of the rollbacks — $8.3 billion — are aimed at foreign aid spending. The rest — $1.1 billion — would rescind funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which funds NPR and PBS.
The proposal comes as the White House has aggressively challenged Congress’ power of the purse and made clear it is willing to steer around the legislative branch to unilaterally control federal spending.
In this case, though, the administration is going through normal channels and asking Congress to go along with its efforts to redirect federal money. Lawmakers can approve such a measure by a simple majority vote in both chambers. Republican lawmakers have argued that it is important for Congress to codify spending cuts that were already enacted by the Trump administration by executive order.
“This rescissions package reflects many of DOGE’s findings and is one of the many legislative tools Republicans are using to restore fiscal sanity,” Speaker Mike Johnson said Tuesday. “Congress will continue working closely with the White House to codify these recommendations, and the House will bring the package to the floor as quickly as possible.”
The last time the Trump administration asked lawmakers to pull back federal funds they had already approved, during Trump’s first term, the effort failed after two Republican senators joined Democrats to defeat what had been a largely symbolic effort.
In an attempt to avoid another failed vote, White House officials worked to narrow the range of proposed cuts.
But at least one powerful Republican, Sen. Susan Collins
President Donald Trump speaks near House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) after meeting with Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill in Washington, May 20, 2025. (Haiyun Jiang/The New York Times)
of Maine, the chair of the Appropriations Committee, said she could not accept at least one provision in the package: a $400 million cut to the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, the global health program started by George W. Bush that is credited with saving more than 25 million lives worldwide.
“It appears that it is cutting PEPFAR, and I will not support a cut to PEPFAR, which is a program that has saved literally millions of lives and has been extremely effective and well-run,” Collins said.
Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska said in an opinion column for The Daily News-Miner in Fairbanks, Alaska, last month that she supported government funding for public broadcasting, which she called “a key part of daily life.”
With narrow majorities in both chambers, Republicans can afford to lose no more than three votes in either the House or Senate on legislation that is opposed by Democrats, if all members are present and cast a vote.
The plan raised alarms at NPR and PBS, which also represent local stations that rely on government grants.
Katherine Maher, the CEO of NPR, said in a memo to employees Tuesday that the clawbacks would have “devastating impact” on local stations and “disproportionately harm audiences in rural communities.”
She wrote, “If the funding already appropriated by Congress is rescinded, the effect will be immediate.”
Paula Kerger, the CEO of PBS, said the cuts would deprive Americans of “unique local programming and emergency services in times of crisis.”
The package is one of several attempts underway by Republicans to weaken public media. Trump signed an executive order last month to cut off funding for NPR and PBS, an edict that was challenged in court. Legislation is also working its way through Congress that would eliminate the funding.
Patricia Harrison, the CEO of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, said in a statement that funding from Congress was “irreplaceable.”
“The path to better public media is achievable only if funding is maintained,” she said.

Elon Musk lashed out earlier this week against the far-reaching Republican bill intended to enact President Donald Trump’s domestic policy agenda, posting on X that it was a “disgusting abomination” and telling House members who voted for it: “You know you did wrong.”
The tech billionaire criticized the bill, one of Trump’s top priorities, in a series of about 10 posts. In them, Musk reshared commentary from lawmakers including Sens. Rand Paul, R-Ky. and Mike Lee, R-Utah, both of whom had sided with him in opposing the rising U.S. deficit.
“I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore,” Musk wrote on X. He called the domestic policy bill “massive, outrageous, pork-filled,” adding that it would “massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit” and that “Congress is making America bankrupt.”
He did not target any specific members of Congress, but hinted that he might support efforts to unseat those who backed the bill in the 2026 midterm elections. “In November next year, we fire all politicians who betrayed the American people,” he wrote.
The blitz of messages signaled a widening rift between Musk and Trump as the tech mogul winds down his
governmental role leading the Department of Government Efficiency. While the men have publicly professed continued admiration for each other, Musk’s departure from Washington has appeared to liberate him from presenting a united front with the White House.
Instead, he has returned to wielding his brand of unpredictable political influence through X, the social media platform he owns. In December, before Trump’s inauguration, Musk torpedoed a bipartisan spending bill with an onslaught of posts on X, including a threat to find primary challengers for Republicans who supported it. In March, he tried unsuccessfully to sway the outcome of a Wisconsin judicial race
with myriad posts in favor of the conservative candidate.
Now unshackled from loyalty to the Trump party line, Musk can again foment chaos with his X feed.
Musk, 53, has often criticized legislation, agencies and others that are against the interests of himself and his companies, which include electric carmaker Tesla and rocket company SpaceX. In its current form, Trump’s domestic policy bill would end subsidies and tax credits meant to spur consumers to buy electric vehicles, which would have ramifications for Tesla.
House Speaker Mike Johnson called Musk’s criticism of the domestic policy bill “very disappointing.” He told reporters at the Capitol that the two spoke Monday and that Musk “seemed to understand” the virtues of the legislation.
The White House and the president were caught off guard by Musk’s posts, a person with knowledge of the situation said, but it’s not yet clear whether Trump will return fire.
“The president already knows where Elon Musk stood on this bill,” said Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary. “It doesn’t change the president’s opinion. This is one big, beautiful bill, and he’s sticking to it.”
A representative for Musk did not respond to requests for comment.
Trump has urged swift passage of the legislation — officially called the One Big Beautiful Bill Act — which would slash taxes, providing the biggest savings to the wealthy, and steer more money to the military and immigration enforcement. As written, the legislation would cut health, nutrition, education and clean energy programs to cover part of the cost.
White House officials and Johnson have claimed that the bill would shrink the national debt, although the Congressional Budget Office and a number of independent analysts have estimated that the bill would increase federal deficits by well over $1 trillion, even when economic growth is factored in.
Musk posted his criticism at a critical moment for the bill, which passed the House on May 22 in the face of a strong pressure campaign by Trump. As Johnson corralled several competing Republican factions, the president summoned recalcitrant holdouts to the White House, and his staff likened Republican opposition to the bill to “the ultimate betrayal.”
But Republican senators have already made clear that they plan to make changes to the bill. Fiscal conservatives, alarmed at the estimates that it would swell the national debt, have demanded further changes and cuts to Medicaid and other programs that could help rein in deficits. Trump
has warned Republicans not to mess with Medicaid, a program that many of his supporters rely on.
Musk started publicly criticizing Trump’s bill last week, saying on CBS News’ “Sunday Morning” that he was disappointed in the legislation’s size and impact on the deficit.
People close to the congressional negotiations said Musk was disappointed that Republicans were removing electric vehicle subsidies, according to two people familiar with the negotiations.
“I know that has an effect on his business, and I lament that,” Johnson said. But he added that he did not believe the government should be subsidizing a transition to electric cars.
In an earlier public break with the administration, Musk slammed the president’s top trade adviser, Peter Navarro, as a “moron” and “dumber than a sack of bricks” in a series of X posts in April. Tesla executives said Musk, who abstained from criticizing Trump directly, seemed not to immediately realize the impact that the administration’s tariffs could have on the automaker.
The White House downplayed the conflict at the time. Asked about it then, Leavitt said, “Boys will be boys.” Late that month, Musk was briefed on the tariffs’ effects and the company’s supply chain vulnerabilities.
Musk’s threats about unseating Republicans contrast with his political spending last year. His super political action committee, America PAC, spent about $20 million in the last election cycle to boost Republicans running for the House. And a different PAC he backed spent $10 million to help Republicans in the Senate.
Some Democrats celebrated Musk’s criticism. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York brought a printed-out copy of Musk’s X posts to the party’s weekly news conference Tuesday.
“He’s right,” Schumer said. “Republicans should listen to him.”
Earlier Tuesday, Musk — who appeared onstage at the Conservative Political Action Conference in February with a chain saw and said it would be “easy” to save the government billions of dollars — shared a meme on X that included a photo of fingertips pinching a minuscule pair of scissors.
“Republicans getting ready to reduce the size of government,” the caption read.

Recently, I asked Google to help me plan my daughter’s birthday party by finding a park in Oakland, California, with picnic tables. The site generated a list of parks nearby, so I went to scout two of them out — only to find there were, in fact, no tables.
“I was just there,” I typed to Google. “I didn’t see wooden tables.”
Google acknowledged the mistake and produced another list, which again included one of the parks with no tables.
I repeated this experiment by asking Google to find an affordable carwash nearby. Google listed a service for $25, but when I arrived, a carwash cost $65.
I also asked Google to find a grocery store where I could buy an exotic pepper paste. Its list included a nearby Whole Foods, which didn’t carry the item.
I wasn’t doing traditional web searches on Google.com. I was testing the company’s new AI Mode, a tool that is similar to chatbots like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, where users can type in questions to get answers. AI Mode, which is rolling out worldwide in the coming weeks, will soon appear as a tab next to your Google.com search results.
The arrival of AI Mode underscores how new technology is redefining what it means to search for something online. For decades, a web search involved looking up keywords, like “most reliable car brands,” to show a list of relevant websites.
Now, with generative AI, the technology that powers chatbots by using complex language models to guess what words belong together, you can ask more specific questions or make complicated requests. That could include directing it to create a chart comparing the five most reliable 2025 sedans.
Google, which has already been showing AI-generated summaries on its search pages for the past year, said AI Mode was a new frontier for search that would complement — but not yet replace — its traditional counterpart.
“We’re really trying for AI Mode to be best at a new class of questions that are harder, more specific, and really the best for when you’re going back and forth trying to get something done,” Robby Stein, a Google executive who oversees the search product team, said in an interview.
The prominent placement of AI Mode on Google.com shows that AI is rapidly becoming unavoidable. Meta has added a chatbot, Meta
AI, in Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram, and Microsoft has integrated AI into its Bing search engine and its latest Surface computers.
What’s unique about AI Mode is that the technology stitches together data from Google’s vast empire of internet services to provide an answer to a query. When you type a question, it could pull data from search queries on Google.com, location information on Google Maps and Google’s shopping data on consumer products.
To help assess whether AI is the future of search, I tested the new tool against traditional Google searches for a multitude of personal tasks over span of about a week, including shopping for a toddler car seat, preparing for a Memorial Day barbecue and understanding the plot twists of a popular video game.
The results were mixed, with lots of hits but also lots of misses, so I encourage people to use AI Mode with caution.
Here’s how it went.
AI Mode vs. Google search
For each of my experiments, I opened AI Mode in one browser tab and Google.com with its traditional search bar in another. I typed the same query in each tab, then compared AI Mode’s answers with Google’s top list of search results.
That helped determine whether AI Mode was more effective or I was better off clicking on search results to find the answers.
Searching for things and places
My earlier examples of picnic tables, a gro -
cery item and a cheap carwash were similar in that they involved asking Google to find places or objects in the real world. Each of those queries prompted Google’s AI to pull my location information and scan sources found on the web.
— Google’s AI Mode list included two parks with no picnic tables, but when I used Google.com to do the same search, its top three results included parks nearby that had tables.
— Google’s AI Mode suggested that the carwash I visited was $25 based on one user review that mentioned this price. But a Google search showed several Yelp reviews of the business, where people reported a more accurate range of $50 to $70.
— Google’s AI Mode generated a list of grocery stores, including Whole Foods, that potentially sold the aji amarillo paste I needed to make Peruvian chicken for a Memorial Day barbecue. When I did a normal Google search for the paste nearby, the search engine took me to an Instacart listing confirming that one of the stores listed by AI Mode, Berkeley Bowl, carried the paste.
Winner: Google search by a long shot. AI Mode’s suggestions were sometimes accurate, but failing to check its answers could lead you down the wrong path and waste your time.
Google said users of AI Mode could share feedback so it could quickly learn.
“It’s early days, and these are technologies that are just starting to roll out now,” Stein said. “As we learn about how to improve it, we’ll improve it as quickly as possible.”
Product research
In another test, I asked Google’s AI to help me research toddler car seats. This is where I saw the technology’s potential to become very useful.
Unlike a traditional web search, which would require me to read reviews of various car seat models and jot down a list including their pricing and features, AI Mode did all of this for me.
I typed: “I’m shopping for a convertible car seat. Create a table for me including popular models from Graco, Chicco and others and include pricing and main features.” Google immediately generated a handy chart to make comparing five car seats easy.
There were some hiccups: Some information was missing from the table, and I noticed that the pricing was wrong for two of the seats. Still, it was simple for me to ask the AI to make corrections, and overall, picking a car seat with this bespoke chart sped up the process for me compared with the old-school method. I tested AI Mode to research other products like birthday gifts for a 1-year-old and the best electric toothbrush. The suggestions were useful.
Winner: AI Mode. It’s a nifty shopping tool, though it’s still wise to do a Google search to double-check the prices.
Pop culture
After becoming a sleep-deprived father with the attention span of a goldfish, I got in the habit of reading summaries of movies and TV shows with convoluted plots.
Recently, I finished a popular video game, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which had a complex storyline. So I asked Google to summarize what had happened.
Google gathered information from various video game blogs, Reddit posts and YouTube videos to piece together a cohesive summary of the game’s plot and many twists. It was a satisfying recap.
Winner: AI Mode. A traditional Google search will show you plenty of plot summaries of TV shows, games and movies on various sites. But sometimes you just want a quick and dirty bullet-pointed recap.
Bottom line
A traditional Google search is still best for the simple act of looking for things to do nearby, but AI Mode could prove to be a nifty tool for more tedious tasks like product research for online shopping — an instant chart comparing baby car seats is helpful, even if imperfect. Just always check the answers.
What matters in U.S. and global markets today
Despite all the trade and geopolitical tensions, markets have a spring in their step today, due to hopes that U.S. bilateral tariff deals will soon emerge, expectations that interest rates will fall in Europe, and signs of economic resilience and tech demand in the U.S.
I discuss all this and the rest of today’s market news below. Plus, check out today’s column, where I explain why the euro’s potential growth in reserve holdings could generate significant capital flows, even if it doesn’t dethrone the dollar as the dominant global currency.
Today’s Market Minute
* The U.S. tariff rate on most imported steel and aluminum doubled on Wednesday as President Donald Trump ratchets up a global trade war on the same day he expects trading partners to deliver their “best offer” in bids to avoid punishing import tax rates on other goods from taking effect in early July.
* Billionaire Elon Musk plunged on Tuesday into the congressional debate over Trump’s sweeping tax and spending bill, calling it a “disgusting abomination” that will increase the federal deficit.
* Trump is set to use emergency powers and slash legal
requirements relating to the Defense Production Act to lift U.S. production of critical minerals and weapons, according to a document seen by Reuters.
* It is widely believed that investors around the world have a disproportionately high exposure to U.S. assets, an imbalance that could roil U.S. markets if corrected. But Reuters columnist Jamie McGeever explains why those fears may be overblown.
* If ‘American exceptionalism’ truly is coming to an end, the key question for many investors is where capital may flow now. While Europe may be the obvious destination, Manishi Raychaudhuri, CEO of Emmer Capital Partners, argues that relative value metrics may favour emerging Asia.
Global stocks hit record highs
MSCI’s all-country equity index hit a record high on Wednesday, a whopping 23% surge from the intraday trough of April 7 hit after the initial U.S. tariff sweep. The world index is now almost 6% higher for the year.
Wall Street continues to lag, but the S&P 500 is positive again for the year and the Nasdaq is within a whisker of breaking even in 2025. Stock index futures are up again ahead of today’s bell, with stocks in Europe and Asia also rising smartly. By contrast, U.S. Treasuries and the dollar both fell back, with the long bond yield now back near 5% and the euro briefly re-capturing $1.14 against the greenback.
But is the coast really that clear for stocks?
Part of the week’s seeming optimism hinges on hopes that the fast approaching deadline on the 90-day pause in U.S. ‘reciprocal’ tariffs will focus minds and deliver deals. Despite the hoopla over a UK agreement last month, no deals have been signed and sealed so far.
Central to hopes of some trade detente is the planned phone call between President Donald Trump and China’s President Xi Jinping. The White House claims it’s happening this week, though it’s unclear exactly when. And Trump posted on Wednesday that Xi was “very tough and extremely hard to make a deal with.”
Washington officially doubled its tariffs on steel and aluminum imports on Wednesday, exempting Britain for now. The Trump administration also expects negotiating countries to make “best offers” by today to avoid additional import levies kicking back in next month.
Maros Sefcovic, the trade negotiator for the European Union, met U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in Paris on Wednesday, with the 27-nation bloc set to make its case for cutting or eliminating threatened tariffs on European imports.
But concern about auto sector disruption from the U.S.China trade standoff has also risen by several notches.
Global automakers joined U.S. counterparts to complain that restrictions by China on exports of rare earth alloys, mixtures and magnets could cause production delays and factory outages without a quick solution.
Trump, meantime, is set to use emergency powers and slash legal requirements relating to a law aimed at lifting U.S. production of critical minerals and weapons, according to a document seen by Reuters.
But despite the very real disruption in manufacturing, there were other signs that the wider U.S. economy is weathering the storm reasonably well, with job openings unexpectedly increasing in April as a week of labor market updates unfolds.

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said Wednesday that abandoning uranium enrichment was “100%” against Iran’s interests, effectively rejecting a key U.S. demand in weeks of tense negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program.
The Trump administration over the weekend proposed the outline of a deal that would seem to allow Iran to continue enriching uranium, which had been a sticking point in talks — but only temporarily. With talks at an impasse, the proposal was seen as a potential concession that could open a path to compromise.
In his first public remarks since the proposal was reported on, Khamenei said Iran’s “response to the U.S. government’s nonsense is clear.”
He said in a speech that it would be “useless” for Iran to build nuclear power plants without being able to enrich uranium over the long term, framing the U.S. proposal as an attempt to obstruct Iran’s nuclear industry and self-reliance.
“The recent nuclear plan that the Americans have prepared is 100% against ‘We Can Do It,’” he said, referring to one of his most prominent slogans, a nod to Iranian independence.
“The rude and arrogant leaders of America
to an outline put forward
abandoning uranium enrichment was
against Iran’s interests. The outline proposed by the U.S. would allow Iran to continue enriching uranium at low levels while a broader arrangement is worked out that would block the country’s path to a nuclear weapon. (Arash Khamooshi/The New York Times)
repeatedly demand that we should not have a nuclear program,” Khamenei continued, adding, “They cannot do anything about this.”
The outline of the potential deal, which Iranian and European officials described on the condition of anonymity, was handed to
Iran over the weekend. It proposed an arrangement that would allow Iran to continue enriching uranium at low levels while the United States and other countries work out a more detailed plan intended to block Iran’s path to a nuclear weapon but give it access to fuel for new nuclear power plants.
Top Iranian officials have rejected the idea of completely abandoning uranium enrichment on Iranian soil.
“Without respecting our right to enrich uranium,” Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Monday in response to the U.S. proposal, “there will be no agreement.”
Khamenei, who has the last word on all key state matters, was less explicit in his critique of the U.S. demands. It was not immediately clear whether his statements were part of the rhetorical theater of negotiations, or an actual position from the government. Notably, he did not order a halt to the negotiations with the United States, though he also did not say whether they would continue.
In his speech Wednesday, he argued that Iran has a right to develop technologies without permission from other countries.
“We’ve told the Americans: ‘What business is it of yours whether Iran pursues enrichment or not?’” he said.
“The Americans want us to abandon our progress,” he said, adding, “They oppose Iran’s progress and the enrichment of our nation.”

At least 11 people were killed and dozens were injured Wednesday in a crowd crush outside a stadium in the Indian city of Bengaluru as tens of thousands celebrated a Premier League cricket championship, officials said.
The crowd had gathered outside M. Chinnaswamy Stadium a day after the city’s popular cricket franchise, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, had won its first title in the cash-rich Indian Premier League’s 18-year history.
A hastily arranged victory parade had been canceled after officials determined that the risk of a stampede was too great. But a celebration inside the stadium proceeded, with the team bused in instead of arriving by parade, and people were trampled at the
gates as they tried to push their way in.
Six bodies and 19 injured people were taken to Bowring Hospital in Bengaluru, the south Indian tech hub also known as Bangalore, said Manoj Kumar, its director. All but one of the dead were in their teens or 20s. Officials at a second hospital, Vydehi, told reporters that four bodies and 12 injured people had been taken there.
Late on Wednesday, Siddaramaiah, the chief minister of the state of Karnataka, where Bengaluru is the capital, said 11 people in all had died. The authorities said the toll could rise further.
“It was a lot of pushing near the gates, and it was really difficult for the police and stadium staff to control the crowd,” said Siddharth H.N., a graduate student who had arrived to take part in the celebration.
Opposition parties in the state of Karnataka, where Bengaluru is the capital, raised questions about the hasty arrangements for the festivities.
“The state government should take full responsibility for this tragedy,” B.Y. Vijayendra, the Karnataka chief of the Bharatiya Janata Party, which leads the national government but is in the opposition in the state, told reporters. “The state government never cared about prior preparations. They were more interested in publicity.”
Siddaramaiah, the chief minister of Karnataka, who represents the governing Congress party in the state, said the plan for a parade had been canceled after the crowd had become too large and unruly.
“This tragedy has overshadowed the joy of the victory,” he said on social media.
The deputy chief minister, D.K. Shivakumar, said that 5,000 police officers had been deployed to provide security for a parade, but that they could not use force against the “young, vibrant crowd” as it grew “uncontrollable.”
The Indian Premier League is one of the world’s richest sports leagues, and the Bengaluru team is perhaps its most popular. The loyal fan following is attributable in large measure to the long-standing presence of its biggest star, Virat Kohli, who has been its face since the league’s inception.
Late on Tuesday, the Bengaluru team finally seized its first championship, defeating the league’s Punjab franchise in front of a crowd of more than 90,000 people in the western city of Ahmadabad.

European nations are increasingly optimistic that they can support Ukraine financially and militarily against Russia even if President Donald Trump decides to wash his hands of the conflict, as he often threatens, and instead focuses on normalizing relations with Moscow.
But even with their best efforts, the Europeans cannot replace all of what the United States provides Ukraine — most important, real-time intelligence about Russian forces, incoming missiles and how and where to target the enemy. Ukraine’s ability to fight effectively relies largely on that U.S. intelligence.
“The Ukrainians don’t want this to be cut off no matter what,” said Camille Grand, a former NATO assistant secretary-general. U.S. intelligence is so sophisticated that it tells the Ukrainian military where Russian brigade headquarters are, where to target missiles and where to aim air defenses against incoming missiles, he said.
Despite Trump’s complaints about Ukraine, the United States has continued to provide intelligence to Kyiv, the capital, save for a pause for a few days after Trump took umbrage with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office. It has also delivered weapons and equipment authorized by Congress during former President Joe Biden’s administration. But that authorization, about $61 billion, is expected to run out in the next few months, and there is no talk in Washington of another appropriation of funds.
NATO defense ministers are focusing on spending goals and aid to Ukraine at meetings Wednesday and Thursday in Brussels. Though Ukraine launched one of its most ambitious attacks yet in Russia over the weekend and attacked a key bridge Tuesday, the issue is increasingly urgent as Ukrainian officials sound alarms about weapons shortfalls and Russia ramps up another offensive.
European officials and analysts expect that Trump will not cut off intelligence to Kyiv or the Starlink satellite communications system or oppose European efforts to buy some key U.S. military equipment, like air defense missiles, and hand them over to Ukraine. Such purchases could help Ukraine maintain its capabilities in areas where U.S. weapons and systems outperform European versions.
Their expectations have been boosted by Trump’s overt frustration with President Vladimir Putin of Russia. Putin has inten-
sified the war, hit more civilian targets and begun a summer offensive, rather than agree to Trump’s desire for a ceasefire and an end to the bloodshed. Ukraine and Russia met Monday in Istanbul for peace talks that yielded little progress.
But the European members of NATO, which also represent the largest and most important members of the European Union, are largely united in their commitment to support Ukraine no matter what Washington decides to do.
The Ukraine Defense Contact Group, a gathering of scores of countries who support Kyiv militarily, met Wednesday at NATO under the leadership of Britain and Germany. The group was originally organized and chaired by the United States under Biden.
But in a sign of Washington’s disengagement, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth chose not to attend the gathering in Brussels or to participate online, even though he is scheduled to arrive in Brussels on Thursday for the meeting of the defense ministers. It was the first time a U.S. defense secretary has not attended the Ukraine group meeting in some form.
But European officials promised continuing aid to Ukraine. Ukraine’s supporters were providing “everything it needs and for as long as it needs,” said Defense Minister Boris Pistorius of Germany. “We will continue to expand this support, and we will maintain it for the long term.”
The Europeans regard a sovereign, independent Ukraine as a key element of their own security against a more aggressive, imperialist Russia, which demands a retreat of NATO forces to 1997 lines. That would create a larger gray zone of uncertainty and instability in Europe again, including all the countries of Central Europe.
NATO troops supporting national forces are stationed in the alliance countries that flank Russia, from the Baltics in the north to Bulgaria in the south, with eight forward-based multinational battalions and a ninth to come in Finland.
“The Europeans have made a basic strategic decision that Ukraine cannot be overrun, that they can’t let that happen,” said Lawrence Freedman, emeritus professor of War Studies, King’s College London.
Money is not the main issue, officials and analysts agree. Europe is providing more money to Ukraine than the United States and can afford to give more. It has committed at least 23 billion euros (about $26 billion) for this year, according to Kaja Kallas, the EU
foreign and security chief. And there is more to be had from new defense loans and the leveraging or seizing of the 210 billion euros of frozen Russian assets held in Europe.
The war in Ukraine, which is now more than 3 years old, is also in some ways becoming cheaper to fight than when it began, as the two sides have moved to the use of sophisticated drones and artillery, rather than tanks and planes. The Europeans are now able to supply Ukraine with enough artillery shells, the analysts say, from their own increasing production and from purchases elsewhere. And European countries are investing more into the Ukrainian defense industry, which is proving “to be more efficient and adaptable than we are,” Freedman said.
The controversial mineral resources deal between the United States and Ukraine could also be used to offset direct U.S. arms sales to Ukraine. U.S. sales would be deducted from Ukraine’s share, which would allow Trump to insist that arms supplies are not a gift.
Just last week, Chancellor Friedrich Merz of Germany announced a $5.7 billion arms package for Ukraine, including investment in missile production there. Ukraine is increasingly producing its own drones, missiles, vehicles and artillery — fully 40% of
its needs, Zelenskyy said Monday.
But the time between investment and product delivery worries the Ukrainians as the U.S. pipeline begins to dry up.
What is hard to obtain are large numbers of air defense missiles, like the U.S. Patriot. The Europeans have some Patriots, some of which they have donated to Ukraine, mostly from German stocks, and European companies produce their own lesser versions, like the SAMP/T. But unlike the Patriot, it cannot shoot down fast-moving ballistic missiles.
And there is no perfect replacement for the deep-strike capability and availability in volume of the HIMARS system, the U.S. mobile long-range missile, Grand said. The Europeans have airborne cruise missiles like the Storm Shadow and the Scalp, but in smaller numbers, and it is still not clear whether Germany will allow the export of its Taurus cruise missile.
Experts are optimistic that Ukraine will be able to hold off Russia’s summer offensive without significant losses. “The Russians always hope the next offensive will make a difference,” Freedman said. But even if the Russians gain ground, they lack enough experienced troops to hold it, he said.
“They still have no better idea than to throw people at the front lines,” he added.

Elon Musk came to Washington with a chain saw and left with a black eye.
Shrinking government is hard, particularly when you do it callously and carelessly — and apparently on hallucinogens.
As with President Donald Trump’s tariffs, the Department of Government Efficiency has created more volatility than value.
A guy who went bankrupt six times doesn’t really care about spending. And Trump certainly didn’t want to see the headline, “Trump Cuts Social Security.”
He just wanted to get revenge on “the bureaucracy” by deputizing Musk to force out a lot of federal employees and give the impression that they were cutting all the waste.
As always with Trump, the former reality star, the impression matters more than the reality, especially the reality of his own sins. This past week, Trump tried to recast the very nature of crime.
As The New York Times’ Glenn Thrush wrote: “President Trump is employing the vast power of his office to redefine criminality to suit his needs — using pardons to inoculate criminals he happens to like, downplaying corruption and fraud as crimes, and seeking to stigmatize political opponents by labeling them criminals.”
It is sickening that the Justice Department is considering settling a wrongful-death lawsuit by giving $5 million to the family of Ashli Babbitt — who was shot on Jan. 6, 2021, by a Capitol police officer when she ignored his warnings and tried to climb through a smashed window into the Speaker’s Lobby in
Elon

the Capitol.
If Babbitt was trying to help Trump claw back a “stolen” election by breaking into the Capitol, then breaking into the Capitol must be a good thing to do, and any police officer who tried to stop her and protect lawmakers cowering under desks must be in the wrong.
To abet Trump’s fake reality, the craven House Republicans refused to put up a plaque honoring the police officers and others who defended the Capitol that awful day.
I take it personally because my dad spent 20 years as a police inspector in Washington in charge of Senate security. He would run to the House whenever there was trouble. So if on Jan. 6 Mike Dowd had been preventing insurrectionists from assaulting lawmakers, he would now be, in Trump’s eyes, not a hero deserving of a plaque, but a blackguard who was thwarting “patriots,” as Trump calls the rioters he pardoned.
It is a disturbing bizarro world.
Trump was rewriting reality again Friday afternoon as one of the most flamboyant, destructive bromances in government history petered out in the Oval Office.
It had peaked last winter when Musk posted on social platform X, “I love @realDonaldTrump as much as a straight man can love another man,” and again when Trump tried to reciprocate by hawking Teslas in the White House driveway.
But Friday, even these grand master salesmen couldn’t sell the spin that Elon had “delivered a colossal change.”
Musk has acknowledged recently that his dream of cutting $1 trillion had been a fantasy. He said changing Washington was “an uphill battle” and complained that Trump’s “big, beautiful” budget bill, which could add over $3 trillion in debt, undercut his DOGE attempts to save money.
As Trump said, Musk got a lot of “the slings and the arrows.” His approval rating cratered and violence has been directed toward Tesla, a brand once loved by liberals and in China, which is now tarnished.
Musk cut off a reporter who tried to ask about a Times article asserting that he was a habitual user of ketamine and a
dabbler in ecstasy and psychedelic mushrooms even after Trump had given him enormous control over the government. That could explain the chain saw-wielding, the jumping up and down onstage, the manic baby-making and crusading for more spreading of sperm by smart people, and the ominous Nazi-style salutes.
When a reporter asked Musk why he had a black eye, he joked about the viral video of Brigitte Macron shoving her husband’s face. Then he explained that while “horsing around” with his 5-year-old, X, he suggested the child punch him in the face, “and he did.”
The president and the Tony Stark prototype tried to convey the idea that they would remain tight, even though Musk would no longer be getting into angry altercations with Scott Bessent outside the Oval, sleeping on the floor of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building and hanging around Mar-a-Lago. (Trump wants the $100 million Musk has pledged for his political operation.)
Musk, wearing a black “DOGE” cap and black “Dogefather” T-shirt, looked around the Oval, which Trump has tarted up to look like a Vegas gift shop, and gushed that it “finally has the majesty that it deserves, thanks to the president.”
Trump gave Musk a golden ceremonial White House key, the kind of thing small-town mayors give out, and proclaimed: “Elon’s really not leaving. He’s going to be back and forth, I think.” Trump said that the father of (at least) 14 would never desert DOGE completely because “It’s his baby.”
Musk brought the Silicon Valley mantra “Move fast and break things” to Washington. But the main thing he broke was his own reputation.

With his dioramalike compositions and tales of longing — usually for a loving family — Wes Anderson has taken audiences most everywhere on the planet: Asia and Europe, New York City and the American southwest, a fox’s hole and an island inhabited by dogs. With “The Phoenician Scheme” he globetrots again, zigging and zagging about, but he adds an unusual place to the list: heaven.
Or, more accurately, the pearly gates that stand just outside of heaven, guarding the way lest the unworthy sneak in. These scenes are really snippets, rendered in black and white. In them, we repeatedly glimpse weapons dealer and generally shady business tycoon Anatole Korda, aka Zsa-zsa (Benicio Del Toro, who is perfect) standing on some clouds before a robed assembly of what the film bills as the “biblical troupe,” among whom are F. Murray Abraham, Willem Dafoe, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Hope Davis and Bill Murray, who, delightfully, plays God.
That all of these screen luminaries apparently just popped to Anderson’s set for a day to film a tiny scene is indicative of where the auteur stands at this point in his 31-year career. Still boyish in appearance, he’s just turned 56, with a bevy of awards under his belt. He’s synonymous with his intricate aesthetic, which is perhaps one of the most recognizable in cinema. It’s turned him into a brand, with social media creators and critics alike drawn to examining and imitating him. He curated a show at Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum in 2018, and as “The Phoenician Scheme” was premiering at the Cannes Film Festival, he was simultaneously the subject of a show at the Cinémathèque Française in Paris.
He’s also built a career on an ever-expanding universe of returning collaborators and players. While some, like Murray, have been around for a long time, Del Toro is still

relatively new to the fold, with “The Phoenician Scheme” only his second Anderson outing (he had a role as a seductive criminal in “The French Dispatch”). He plays the cold and aloof Korda who, upon surviving his sixth assassination attempt, finally admits he needs to appoint an heir to his business and vast fortune. He has nine sons who live in a dormitory across the street from his house — Korda is not a very good dad — but he also has an estranged daughter, Liesl (Mia Threapleton, all deadpan chain-smoking charm), who is on the verge of taking her vows at the convent. Liesl’s moral sense is as upstanding as her father’s is utilitarian, and when he lays out his plan to her, she senses she might be able to do some good even if she doesn’t trust him.
So she convinces him to take the slightly higher ethical ground toward his big, well, scheme — the details of which are laid out so rapidly and so sketchily that it’s pretty clear Anderson doesn’t care if we really catch on to what Korda wants to do. Despite its title, this is not a movie about a plan, but about the man with that plan and, most importantly, his soul.
In fact, this is a rather soul-obsessed movie, the kind you often see from artists who have been pondering the meaning of life lately. I can’t guarantee that’s what Anderson’s been doing, but I can confirm this is the first of his films that depicts religious inquiry in any explicit way. As Korda and Liesl traipse around the world trying to drum up funding for his scheme, they meet with a series of Korda’s acquaintances and associates and relatives, all of whom reveal something about how he’s conducted his business and life in the past. These include but are not limited to a prince (Riz Ahmed), a pair of brothers (Tom Hanks and Bryan Cranston), a nightclub owner with the delightful moniker Marseille Bob (Mathieu Amalric), a guy named Marty (Jeffrey Wright), some militants led by a man named Sergio
(Richard Ayoade), and finally two of Korda’s family members: his utopian second cousin Hilda (Scarlett Johansson) and the grudge-bearing Uncle Nubar (Benedict Cumberbatch).
Yes, that’s a lot of names. It’s not even all of them. And that illuminates the biggest issue with “The Phoenician Scheme”: It’s overstuffed, and thus skims and skitters across the surface of everything it touches, only glancing here and there before it’s taking off to the next story beat, the next exquisitely detailed composition. A breath or two or 10 might have been in order, a moment to contemplate what the movie’s getting at. You sometimes get the feeling it’s afraid to look too hard at itself.
That does, however, mirror how Korda has lived his life, until the moment Liesl shows up. With each visit for each new funding plea, some aspect of Korda’s life gets aired out briefly, and Liesl gets a better look at who her father really is. She also discusses God and religion and goodness with him, and with the tutor that Korda hires to travel with him and keep things intellectually interesting. The current tutor, Bjorn Lund, is an entomologist, so he’s always talking about bugs; he’s also played by Michael Cera, who somehow has never been in a Wes Anderson movie before. Thank god he’s joined that particular cinematic universe.
Korda, preternaturally calm about everything, confronts his past with outward aplomb, but there’s an uneasiness growing in him. Between these scenes, we see him at those pearly gates, experiencing the difficulties that might lie in the afterlife. It’s as if the mounting self-knowledge, prompted by Liesl’s presence in his life, is prompting the long-overdue awakening of his conscience.
And that leads to the big question the movie is asking, when you can look behind all that scurrying: Can a man like Korda be great and be good? Or are the two incompatible? Must conquering the world and amassing a fortune require exploiting everyone around him? (One of Liesl’s innovations in his scheme is banning the use of slave labor, for instance.) Or, to quote a book of which Liesl is quite fond, what is the real profit if he gains the whole world and loses his soul?
One of the mottoes by which Korda has lived his life is “If something gets in your way, flatten it,” a slogan that sounds suspiciously similar to the kind of advice you get from rise-and-grind TikTok gurus or ethically bendy tech executives. But the higher up you get, the flatter everything below you looks. It’s easy to forget all those humans down there. Greatness and success, “The Phoenician Scheme” suggests, are all well and good. But there’s joy that comes from returning to the three-dimensional world, to a place where you pray or you cook, where a little scotch and a game of cards with friends at the end of a long day means love.

By JAMES L. EDWARDS III / THE ATHLETIC
From the 2012-13 season through 2019-20, New York Knicks coaches Mike Woodson, Derek Fisher, Kurt Rambis, Jeff Hornacek, David Fizdale and Mike Miller combined for a total of 238 regularseason wins.
From the 2020-21 season through this year, coach Tom Thibodeau won 226 regularseason games.
Thibodeau, like the revolving door of coaches before him, is now out.
The Knicks relieved Thibodeau of his duties after the team reached the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in 25 years but failed to advance to the NBA Finals. With the goal of winning a championship, people familiar with the decision told The Athletic, the organization needed a new voice, and this was the first step in a process of reaching those heights. Those people also said it was a decision made by Leon Rose, the team president, with the backing of owner James Dolan.
“The [New York] Knicks are relevant again, in large part because of the culture that [Tom] Thibodeau helped build. Now they might have to learn the hard way that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side,” columnist James L. Edwards III writes. (Reddit via r/NYKnicks)
Read that again: New York fired its head coach after doing something it hadn’t done in a quarter-century. The Knicks are relevant again, in large part because of the culture that Thibodeau helped build. Now they might have to learn the hard way that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.
Thibodeau, who signed a three-year extension last summer and has $20 million still guaranteed on his contract, led New York to back-to-back 50-win seasons. That hadn’t happened since 1995. Thibodeau also led the Knicks to the conference semifinals three years in a row. That hadn’t happened since 2000. The Knicks finished this regular season with the fifth-best offense in the NBA and the eighth-best net rating. The team was put together one day before training camp and was one of the final four teams standing in the postseason.
The man who played a big part in all of this is now without a job.
Star guard Jalen Brunson said definitively after New York’s season ended that Thibodeau was the right man for the sideline going forward.
“Is that a real question right now?” Brunson said when asked if Thibodeau could take the Knicks all the way. “Did you just ask me if I believe he’s the right guy?
“Yes.”
Neither the Knicks nor Thibodeau achieved perfection this season, and that was part of what made this run special. The team had flaws, yet it found a way to overcome them and dethrone the reigning NBA champions, the Boston Celtics, in the second round.
New York’s core starting group of Brunson, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby, Josh Hart and Karl-Anthony Towns had a negative net rating for most of the regular season and through the playoffs. That collection of talent never fully maximized its offensive firepower, particularly in the second half of the season; apparently, the decision-makers believe that coaching
played a part in that. Furthermore, there have been questions all season long about Thibodeau’s reluctance to play his bench. In Thibodeau’s defense, the Knicks, because of their financial limitations, did not have the most inspiring bench pieces. Besides Miles McBride, and because Mitchell Robinson missed most of the regular season with an injury, New York’s second unit consisted primarily of journeymen and late draft picks.
Thibodeau also received a lot of flak for playing his starters too many minutes. The starting group during the regular season played more minutes than any five-man unit in the NBA. Bridges and Hart were No. 1 and No. 2 in minutes played during the regular season. Anunoby ranked eighth. Despite that, the Knicks got through most of the regular season healthy. Brunson was the only one who missed significant time, and that was because he turned his ankle in a game. New York’s core players were still standing throughout the playoffs, and the team didn’t lose because of health problems.
Thibodeau and Bridges did have some friction this year when Bridges spoke out publicly about the starters playing too many minutes. Bridges was the first player to speak out against the heavy workload, as most Thibodeau-coached players enjoy that the coach gives them the rope to play significant minutes.
The Knicks’ decision-makers have taken more risks over the past 10 months than in the previous four years combined. The trades for Bridges and Towns, and now the firing of Thibodeau, aren’t just moves around the margins but are franchise-altering decisions.
It’s good that the Knicks have set a high bar. That should be the standard. This move, though, feels like strange timing. The franchise has forward momentum. The core group isn’t even a year old. Now the pressure is back on New York to make sure the next head coach is the perfect hire.

Thibodeau deserved another season, for no other reason than he was pivotal in returning the Knicks to relevancy. He should have gotten another shot to maximize this group.
Clearly, though, New York’s leaders feel different. They have to be right. Otherwise, this Knicks resurgence could suffer major setbacks.
