Education Dept. honors 1,612 students with 4.00 GPA

Education Secretary Eliezer Ramos Parés and Secretary of State Rosachely Rivera Santana on Wednesday held the 2026 Academic Excellence Ceremony, an event that recognizes the effort, dedication and high academic performance of students in the public school system who graduated with a perfect 4.00 GPA throughout high school.

During the event, a total of 1,612 students were recognized and received a $1,000 incentive in recognition of their academic achievements. Of that number, 1,434 were regular students, 28 were in the Adult Education Program, and 22 were in the CASA Program (Center for Sustainable Student Support). In addition, 14 students were recognized for achieving the highest scores on the College Board Admission Tests. The latter students received an additional incentive of $1,000, for a total of $2,000 in awards granted by the Department of Education.

The Mayagüez Educational Region stood out as the region with the highest number of students recognized for academic excellence, reaffirming its commitment to educational quality and academic achievement. Likewise, the Manuel Méndez Liciaga School in San Sebastián was recognized as the institution with the highest number of students distinguished for academic excellence in Puerto Rico.

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón congratulated the awardwinning students and reiterated her commitment to continue providing the necessary tools for each student to become a top-tier professional.

“These achievements have a very special meaning for me because I am a product of the Puerto Rican public school system and grew up witnessing firsthand the commitment and dedication to service of a school principal, my father,” the governor said. “I know firsthand the impact that a quality education has on the lives of our young people. That is why, in our government program, we have made public education a priority, committed to strengthening our schools, supporting

our teachers, and expanding opportunities so that every student can reach their full potential. I congratulate each of these young people for demonstrating that with effort, discipline, and perseverance, great goals can be achieved.”

Ramos Parés emphasized that the recognition transcends grades and represents the result of the collaborative work of students, parents, teachers and school communities.

“We are deeply proud of each of these young people who are receiving this recognition today,” he said. “Behind every perfect average lies sacrifice, perseverance, and a support network committed to their success. [...] Likewise, we recognize the families, teachers, principals, and school staff who have accompanied these students throughout their academic journey. This achievement also belongs to them.”

During the ceremony, Philps Daniels Soto, from the Mayagüez Residential Center for Educational Opportunities, or CROEM, part of the Mayagüez Educational Region, and Daniel Méndez Estrada, from the Josefa Vélez Bauzá School in the Ponce Educational Region, were also recognized for achieving the highest scores in Puerto Rico on the College Boards.

A total of 1,612 students in the island public school system who graduated with a perfect 4.00 GPA throughout high school were recognized and received a $1,000 incentive in recognition of their academic achievements.

Medical Sciences Campus graduates 134 specialists, swears in new physicians

The School of Medicine at the University of Puerto Rico’s Medical Sciences Campus graduated 134 specialists and subspecialists across 35 programs, in addition to swearing in 96 new physicians and six scientists from the Class of 2026, it was reported on Wednesday.

During the resident graduation ceremony, held at the Caribe Hilton Hotel, physicians were recognized for completing between three and five years of specialized training following the attainment of their medical degrees.

Of the total number of graduating residents, 75 will remain in

Puerto Rico -- including 12 who will continue their subspecialty studies or fellowships on the island.

The specialties and subspecialties represented include internal medicine, pediatrics, emergency medicine, family medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine, urology, neurology, sports medicine, child and adolescent psychiatry, cardiology, nephrology, and endocrinology.

As part of the same day’s events, 96 medical students reaffirmed their commitment to the medical profession by taking the traditional oath.

Of this group of new physicians, 66% will remain in Puerto Rico to continue their training in 19 medical specialties.

Family Dept. clarifies PAN recertification process amid public confusion

Amid confusion sparked by information circulating Wednesday about the re certification process for the Nutritional Assistance Program, known locally as PAN, the island Family Department reiterated that participants who continue to meet eligibility requirements will keep receiving their benefits without interruption.

The agency said it has resumed the regular annual recertification process mandated by the federal government, following several years of extraordinary waivers granted after hurricanes Irma and Maria, the 2020 earthquakes and the COVID‑19 pandemic.

rect. She noted that before any determination is made, the Administration for the Socioeconomic Development of the Family (ADSEF by its ac ronym in Spanish) issues multiple notices and communications to inform participants of the need to complete their eligibility review.

“Benefits are not canceled automatically or arbitrarily,” she said. “Participants receive notices, guidance and opportunities to complete their recertification. If a person continues to meet the program’s requirements, they will continue receiving the nutritional assistance they need.”

sponsibility, similar to renewing a driver’s license or updating information for health services.

To facilitate the process, participants have several options. Recertification can be complet ed virtually through ADSEF Digital, via virtual appointments, by submitting documents elec tronically, or with direct assistance from agency staff. ADSEF will also expand outreach efforts at Family Markets, through its mobile unit, and via the 3‑1‑1 service line.

Suzanne Roig Fuertes said.

Roig Fuertes stressed that the perception that benefits are being suspended arbitrarily is incor

“This is not a new process nor an extraordi nary measure. It is a federal requirement that has always been part of the program’s administration and is now being reinstated gradually after the expiration of the waivers granted during the emergencies Puerto Rico faced,” Family Secretary

As part of the reinstated process, ADSEF began reviewing cases involving participants aged 60 or older, as well as individuals who have gone 36 months or more without completing an eligibility evaluation, regardless of age.

The agency reminded the public that com pleting the recertification is the participant’s re

Roig Fuertes urged all participants to stay alert to official communications, verify when their review is due, and seek guidance as soon as they receive a notification.

“Our priority is ensuring that every eligible person continues receiving their benefits,” she said. “That is why we have enabled multiple tools and support channels to make the process simple, accessible, and convenient for all participants.”

Rincón to invest $1.1 million to enhance beachfront ahead of summer season

Rincón Mayor Carlos D. López Bonilla announced a $1.1 million investment this week to upgrade and expand recreational infrastructure along the municipality’s coastline, a project timed with the start of the summer tour ism season.

“Rincón is the Surfing Capital of Puerto Rico and the most visited tourist destination in the west, both by Puerto Ricans and tourists from all over the world,” López Bonilla said dur ing the project’s inauguration.

The initiative includes the construction of a new boat ramp and the rehabilitation of the marina area. Improvements feature full asphalt paving of the parking lot, designated spaces for trailers and towed vehicles, and new specialized signage to guide beachgoers. The mayor said the upgrades are designed to enhance visitor experience while strengthening environmental protections.

“This investment contributes to the enjoyment of Rincón residents and visitors, but also to the safety and protection of

our natural environment,” he said.

Rincón remains one of Puerto Rico’s most recognized tourism hubs, a distinction reflected in international travel platforms such as TripAdvisor. The town offers a wide range of lodging options including Villa Cofresí, Casa Verde, Rincón of the Seas and The Lazy Parrot as well as numerous short term rentals and restaurants.

Among its most iconic attractions is the Punta Higuero Lighthouse, overlooking Domes Beach, a favorite among surf ers for its powerful waves. Sandy Beach continues to draw crowds, while Steps Beach is home to the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve, known for its parrotfish populations and hawksbill turtles. Farther south, visitors find the calmer Caribbean waters of Playa Córsica, and offshore coral reefs encircle the remote Desecheo Island.

The lighthouse area also serves as a gathering point for local artisans, whose colorful handmade pieces have become part of the town’s cultural identity. Visitors are encouraged to stay through the afternoon to enjoy the West Coast’s signature sunsets.

Méndez urges expansion of Vieques airport

Speaker of the Puerto Rico House of Representatives Carlos “Johnny” Méndez Nuñez seeks to promote the expansion of operations at the Antonio Rivera Rodríguez regional airport in the offshore island mu nicipality of Vieques with the aim of attracting international flights, new routes, airlines and aircraft with more capacity.

“The Vieques regional airport has received

several recent refurbishments that have made possible the possible expansion of air opera tions, including aircraft of greater capacity, as well as new routes and even the establishment of new airlines,” Méndez said. “We believe that the time has come to promote this operational expansion in this facility that results in greater economic activity; that is why we are evaluat ing a series of alternatives toward those ends.”

Méndez, who represents District 36 (Río Grande, Luquillo, Fajardo, Ceiba, Vieques

and Culebra), stressed that with the upcom ing inauguration of the new hospital, as well as the dormitory for doctors and other health care personnel, there will be greater passenger and cargo traffic in Vieques.

“Among the concepts currently under evaluation is the establishment of agreements to facilitate international air routes for instance, with the British Virgin Islands as well as an increase in the volume of private and charter flights,” he said. “Likewise, the

inauguration of the hospital is expected to attract additional flights; this is an area we will be discussing with Mayor José ‘Junito’ Corcino in order to review his proposals and concepts.”

The Vieques airport features a single run way that is capable of handling small propeller planes as well as jet powered aircraft, such as certain models of the Embraer Phenom, Pilatus PC, Hondajet and Cessna Citation, among others.

Oversight board warns mayors to stop implementing Acts 141 & 215

The Financial Oversight and Management Board for Puerto Rico has ordered the island’s two mayors organizations to stop implementing two laws that expand municipal procurement and taxation powers, warning that the measures violate the certified Fiscal Plan and could jeopardize federal funding.

In a letter sent Monday to Camuy Mayor Gabriel Hernández Rodríguez, president of the Puerto Rico Mayors Federation, and Jayuya Mayor Jorge González Otero, president of the Puerto Rico Mayors Association, the executive director of the oversight board, Robert F. Mu jica Jr., said several municipalities have begun applying provisions of Act 141‑2024 and Act 215‑2024 despite an ongoing review under the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA) § 204(a).

The oversight board reiterated that neither law may be implemented unless and until it determines they comply with PROMESA and the applicable fiscal plans. Act 141 raises the threshold for requiring a public auction for construction and public improvement projects from $200,000 to

$500,000, and allows contracts of up to $1 million to bypass competitive bidding during an emergency declaration. The board previ ously warned in January 2025 that the measure “contravenes procurement best practices and undermines market competition.”

Act 215 similarly increases procurement limits, doubling the sealed request‑for‑pro posals threshold for municipal works from $100,000 to $200,000 and more than tripling the micro‑purchase threshold from $3,000 to $10,000. In a June 2025 letter, the board said the law weakens competitive bidding require ments central to the Fiscal Plan.

The oversight board also highlighted a second component of Act 215: a change to the Municipal Code that allows municipalities to impose construction excise taxes on projects even when the project owner is exempt, in cluding projects financed with commonwealth

or federal funds.

According to the letter, some municipalities have already begun collecting these taxes.

The board warned that taxing federally funded projects could be interpreted by fed eral agencies as a misuse of funds, potentially discouraging future allocations to Puerto Rico. It also cautioned that higher municipal taxes could make energy reconstruction and other critical infrastructure projects more expensive, less viable, or even unprofitable.

Additionally, the oversight board noted that allowing 78 municipalities to impose varying tax rates could lead to inequitable outcomes, distort where projects are located, and create administrative inefficiencies.

Mujica asked both mayoral organizations to confirm by June 22 that they have instructed their members not to implement either law until the oversight board completes its review.

Aguas Buenas mayor demands LUMA address substation failures

Aguas Buenas Mayor Karina Nieves Serrano demanded on Wednesday that grid operator LUMA Energy intervene immediately to address constant failures at the substa tion that supplies power to the municipality.

“The residents of Aguas Buenas deserve stable and reliable electric service,” Nieves Serrano stated in written remarks. “It is unacceptable that every time a failure occurs at this substa tion, a large portion of the municipality is left without power. This situation has become a recurring problem that affects the quality of life of our people.”

The mayor said that for approximately two weeks, residents have faced frequent and prolonged blackouts that have left a

large part of the town without electrical service.

The interruptions have impacted homes, businesses, seniors, and individuals who rely on medical equipment to manage their health conditions.

Nieves Serrano said the municipality has received multiple complaints and grievances from citizens about the frequency of the interruptions.

She also pointed out a lack of clear information regarding the corrective actions that will be taken to permanently resolve the problem.

“We request that LUMA report the specific causes of these breakdowns, what measures are being taken to correct them, and what the work plan is to prevent continued interruptions that affect our town,” the mayor added.

Court dismisses senator’s lawsuit over archived cases at Justice Dept.

Superior Court Judge Anthony Cuevas Ra mos late on Tuesday dismissed the lawsuit filed by Sen. Luis Javier Hernández Ortiz against the Justice Secretary Lourdes Gómez Torres seeking to compel the release of informa tion regarding cases archived within the Divi sion of Public Integrity and Comptroller Affairs.

“In this case, Senator Hernández Ortiz filed the instant petition without demonstrating that he holds any of the roles within the legisla tive bodies that the statute requires in order

to initiate this type of action,” Cuevas Ramos concluded in his ruling. “Thus, lacking standing to sue, this Court is bound to act in accordance with the doctrine of judicial self restraint.”

The court determined that Article 34 A of the Political Code expressly delineates who may turn to the judicial forum to request the production of documents or objects in the context of a legislative investigation.

The ruling establishes that this authority rests with the president or vice president of any of the legislative bodies authorized by law.

Hernández Ortiz had requested that the

Court of First Instance, San Juan Superior Divi sion, order Gómez Torres to produce a list of cases archived pursuant to Administrative Order 2025 09, as well as copies of the corresponding closure and archiving orders.

According to the court document, the sena tor filed Information Request 2026-0063 with the Senate of Puerto Rico on May 4, which was unanimously approved that same day.

The Justice Department refused to release the documents on May 19, arguing that the closure reports or memoranda prepared by prosecutors constitute part of the agency’s

internal investigative and deliberative process.

Subsequently, on May 21, the Senate approved a motion granting the secretary of justice a final 48-hour deadline to submit the requested information.

In light of the Department of Justice’s refusal, Hernández Ortiz petitioned the court, assert ing that he possessed authorization from the Senate as well as the concurrence of Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz.

Cuevas Ramos concluded that such authori zation did not satisfy the statutory requirement for standing under Article 34 A.

Pushing treatment, Trump administration limits housing aid for homeless

The Trump administration has issued a revised plan to address homelessness that shifts large sums of federal aid from long-term housing to time-limited programs that emphasize treatment for mental illness and addiction.

The plan, which seeks to promote “law and order,” is a scaled-back version of one the administration issued last fall. Congress and a federal court blocked that proposal after critics warned it could send as many as 170,000 formerly homeless people back to the streets.

The administration’s revised plan is still a frontal assault on the long-standing model of homelessness aid known as Housing First. The move is likely to shift about $1.2 billion away from housing programs, with the risk of displacing current tenants. It constitutes the sharpest change in homelessness policy in a generation.

“The ‘housing first’ experiment failed Americans by warehousing the vulnerable without results,” Scott Turner, the housing secretary, said in a statement. “Housing alone will not solve a crisis driven by addiction or mental health.”

Critics argue that the turn away from housing aid, which is likely to draw another legal challenge, puts large numbers of vulnerable people at risk. Some of the money that would be shifted is being used to house formerly homeless people.

“It’s a step back from where the administration was last year, but it will still have the effect of displacing tens of thousands

of people and putting up new barriers to assistance,” said David Gonzalez Rice, a vice president at the National Low Income Housing Coalition, an advocacy group that sued over last year’s plan. “The short-term programs they’re promoting have a history of failing to serve the people with the greatest need.”

The change involves the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Continuum of Care program, which disburses about $4 billion a year to more than 400 local grant-making groups to finance aid to the homeless. For at least 15 years, the program has promoted Housing First programs, which provide long-term housing to chronically homeless people and offer, but do not require, treatment for mental health and addiction.

Proponents argue that the once-bipartisan approach, which has been extensively studied, gets people off the street.

But growing numbers of conservative critics say that Housing First fails to treat addiction or mental illness, crowds out other approaches, instills dependency, and fails to stem the long-term rise in homelessness, as supporters once promised it would. Homelessness has risen about 15% since 2007, when current methods of counting began. Supporters of Housing First largely attribute the increase to rising rents and the surge of asylum-seekers that began in 2022.

The plan the administration issued last fall would have limited spending on longterm housing programs (often known as permanent supportive housing) to just 30% of federal aid, down from current levels of

about 90%. In promoting a “treatment-first” approach instead, the Trump administration would have shifted billions to short-term programs that require the homeless to work or seek help for mental illness and addiction.

A federal judge in Rhode Island blocked the effort on procedural grounds, saying it was issued too close to application deadlines to let local groups adapt. But she did not address the argument from critics that the change in criteria violated the law.

Congress then passed a measure requiring the housing department to distribute at least 60% of its homelessness aid to

long-term housing programs. That is what the new plan requires.

The remaining 40% of aid appears largely aimed at so-called “transitional housing” programs, which are limited to two years of aid, with an emphasis on work requirements and treatment mandates.

Devon Kurtz, an analyst with the conservative Cicero Institute, which works closely with the Trump administration, praised the new rules for promoting a greater diversity of local programs. Rules that steered 90% of federal funds to housing programs “ossified the system, crowded out anyone who did not do Housing First,” he said. The housing department, he added, “is saying we need to provide different kinds of interventions to people with different kinds of needs.”

But Dennis P. Culhane, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, argued that policy had shifted to long-term housing long ago because short-term aid, focused on treatment, had proved unsuccessful.

“Research shows that transitional housing is the most expensive intervention and the outcomes aren’t very good,” he said. “Most people leave quickly and don’t complete the treatment.” Without long-term housing aid, he added, “even ‘graduates’ have high rates of return to homelessness.”

Buried in the 128-page plan, released late Monday, are details that could subtly shift political power among players in the homelessness policymaking world. By demanding that the local groups, called Continuum of Cares, “cooperate with law enforcement to advance public safety,” the rules promote the enforcement of camping bans. The new plan also makes it easier for the groups to combine into statewide entities, potentially bringing independent local groups under the control of governors. And it makes a point of inviting applications from faith-based organizations.

The rules also reward groups that reduce local homelessness, though critics warned that the number of people without housing is often determined by forces outside local programs’ control, such as housing costs, health systems and inequality. Rice said that such policies could reward communities that drive away the homeless and penalize big cities with large systems to serve homeless people, many run by Democrats.

“The effect could be to shift homelessness funding away from the homeless,” he added.

A Trump endorsement falls flat: 4 election takeaways from Iowa and beyond

Republican voters in Iowa dealt a shock defeat to President Donald Trump on Tuesday, narrowly rejecting his chosen candidate for governor in favor of another conservative contender who ran as a political outsider.

The primary loss for Rep. Randy Feenstra, whom the president endorsed Friday afternoon, came at a time of mixed signals of Trump’s power over the Republican Party. He has won a series of dominant primary victories over Republican opponents, but has faced rising pushback from his party in Congress.

Here are four takeaways from a busy primary night in Iowa and several other states.

Trump had a rare high-profile primary loss.

In modern Republican primary politics, Trump’s endorsement is the gold standard. In the past month, it has ousted sitting senators, a member of Congress

and state legislators whom the president deemed insufficiently loyal.

So when Feenstra won Trump’s endorsement for governor last week, it felt like the push he needed to get past four candidates in the primary.

Yet Feenstra was toppled Tuesday by Zach Lahn, a conservative political operative and farmer who ran an insurgent campaign. Feenstra was seen as having run a lackluster campaign, and also faced the wrath of former Rep. Steve King, who lost to Feenstra in a 2020 primary and backed Lahn.

Feenstra’s defeat makes him the highest-profile candidate endorsed by Trump to lose a Republican primary race in years — perhaps since Luther Strange, an appointed senator in Alabama, fell to Roy Moore in a 2017 special election primary. Moore went on to lose the general election to Doug Jones, a Democrat.

Feenstra was widely seen as having run a lackluster campaign that failed to win over the state’s conservative base. Trump’s endorsement was most likely just too late — there was no time to produce television ads highlighting it in the final days before the primary.

The result sets up a general election that Democrats believe is their best chance to flip a governorship. The Democrat in the race is Rob Sand, the state auditor, who is mounting a well-funded campaign to succeed Gov. Kim Reynolds, who did not seek reelection. No Democrat has won election as Iowa governor since 2006.

A Democrat seen as Chuck Schumer’s pick won in Iowa.

Josh Turek, a Paralympic gold medalist who was backed by $10 million from a group allied with minority leader Chuck Schumer of New York, coasted to a victory in Iowa’s Democratic primary for Senate. He defeated Zach Wahls, a progressive state senator who ran a campaign aimed at upending the party establishment.

Turek gives Democrats a Senate nominee with experience winning state legislative races on Republican turf. He will face Rep. Ashley Hinson, a Republican, in the general election to succeed Sen. Joni Ernst, a retiring two-term Republican.

Democrats need to hold their own Senate seats and flip at least four GOP-held seats to take a majority in the chamber.

Turek’s primary triumph demonstrat-

ed that despite Democratic voters’ anger toward their leaders in Washington, it remains difficult for an insurgent candidate to overcome a big financial disadvantage.

Wahls, a former state Senate minority leader, ran as a political outsider who aimed to upend the Washington establishment, pledging to vote against Schumer as Senate Democratic leader.

In the end, the $10 million from VoteVets, a Schumer-aligned Democratic veterans organization, was too much for Wahls to overcome.

A progressive prevailed in a crowded New Jersey primary.

Dr. Adam Hamawy, who was endorsed by Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, won a crowded Democratic primary for a deep-blue House district in central New Jersey.

A retired Army surgeon, Hamawy is best known for helping to save the life of Tammy Duckworth, now a senator from

Illinois. He is running to succeed Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, who did not seek reelection.

Hamawy is the second progressive to win a contested New Jersey primary this year. In a February primary, Analilia Mejia, a political organizer who was also endorsed by Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez, surprised political observers in the state by winning a special-election primary. Mejia coasted to a primary victory Tuesday.

A Biden alumna cruised in New Mexico.

Deb Haaland, who served as interior secretary during the Biden administration, won an easy victory in the Democratic primary for governor of New Mexico without an endorsement from the former president.

Haaland dispatched Sam Bregman, a local prosecutor who tried to run an anti-establishment campaign. Bregman is the father of Chicago Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman.

Republican candidate for Iowa governor Zach Lahn speaks at the Iowa Faith & Freedom Coalition’s Spring Kickoff in Clive, Iowa on Friday, May 1, 2026. Dear President Ozymandias

To: Our greatest president

From: Your greatest fans

We are writing to let you know, sir, that we are as outraged as you are that some liberal judge has ordered that your name be stripped from the Donald J. Trump and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts. Not only is the decision wrong, it’s also backward. You’ve survived three assassination attempts, and yet the building will keep his name?

On a related subject, sir, we hope those knuckleheads in Congress won’t let some old law stand in the way of putting your face on a $250 bill. After all, nothing advertises the strength of a country’s economy like high-denomination bank notes. And since restaurant meals now often run to about $250 (minus drinks and dessert) for a party of four, making a bank note with your mug shot on it will be triply convenient: faster payment; a reminder of how affordable things have become under your presidency; and proof that, in the land of the free, you can get away with just about anything.

We’re also big supporters of your plan for your triumphal arch for Washington soaring a proud 250 feet, nearly as tall as the Capitol itself. Hopefully it will include large gold-plated statues of the greatest American leaders, such as Abraham Lincoln and yourself. People are calling it the “Arc de Trump,” like the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. That one was commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte, just before such strokes of military genius as the Peninsular War, the invasion of Russia and the Hundred Days campaign of 1815.

Do you know they named a bridge and a train station in London in honor of the battle that ended that last excursion?

At any rate, leaders who build gargantuan triumphal arches always go on to greater military glory. Maybe yours will be for the liberation of Hormuz, though that may have to await the deployment of the new “Trump class” battleships after the first

Construction workers etched President Donald Trump’s name on the Kennedy Center in Washington, on Friday, Dec. 19, 2025. A federal judge in Washington ordered on Friday, May 29, 2026, that the John F. one commissions sometime around 2036.

We fear, however, that you may be missing significant opportunities to enhance your and your family’s visibility.

We were tempted to suggest, for example, that you consider renaming the Statue of Liberty the “Melania Knauss Trump Statue of Liberty,” in honor of the first immigrant — a legal immigrant, of course — to become first lady. But Lady Liberty isn’t exactly a “10,” except maybe in her dress size, and the poem about “the wretched refuse of your teeming shore” is not on-brand when it comes to the Trump name.

For now, we have shelved the idea. But have you considered building a svelter “Statue of Melania,” 250 feet tall (not including the base), on nearby Governors Island? The inscription could read: “Give me your Central European catalog models and anyone willing to write a $25 million check.”

Future generations will find it inspirational.

National Mall? Ideally, these should be lit up at night in a way that can be visible from 30,000 feet, if not from space. Speaking of space, aren’t we going back to the moon under your presidency? That’s got to mean naming rights in addition to bragging rights. At a minimum, our first lunar base must be named for you. (The second one can be named for Elon, or maybe Jeff, whoever is first, provided you’re still on good terms with either of them.) But why do we even call our planet’s moon “the Moon,” as if a generic noun should be a proper noun, too? That needs to change.

Get ready for it: Trump Moon.

Mr. President, there are so many ways to honor your priceless achievements and legacy, but we’ve already taken too much of your time. And time being the most valuable thing of all, it reminds us, finally, of a poem:

I met a traveler from an antique land

Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone

Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand, Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,

Tell that its sculptor well those passions read

Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed: And on the pedestal these words appear:

“My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!”

Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away.

Yours sincerely, Percy, Bysshe and Shelley

We also believe you were too modest when you chose to rename the Gulf of Mexico after America rather than after yourself, as you had thought to do at first. But why settle for a mere gulf? The Atlantic Ocean is named for Atlas, a figure from Greek mythology, which makes little sense, since Greece is nowhere near the Atlantic. And the Pacific Ocean, which is much larger than the Atlantic, was named after a brand of Mexican beer, Pacifico, which makes no sense at all.

You know what does make sense? Trump Oceans. Plural. It simplifies geography while amplifying your name.

And we cannot stop there.

You mustn’t be shy about putting your name to the new White House ballroom. And though we understand that adding your face to Mount Rushmore (for which there’s already a bill in Congress) may, alas, be a geological impossibility, why not, while it’s being repaired and redone, add the name TRUMP in huge gold-tiled letters to the floor of the Reflecting Pool in the

This month’s picks include an Argentine comedy based on a real-life incident, a queer story set in 1980s Chile, a documentary about the aftermath of the Troubles in Belfast and more.

‘27 Nights’

In 2005, Argentine artist and writer Natalia Kohen was committed to a psychiatric institution against her will by her children in what turned out to be a corrupt scheme to control her finances. That sordid tale provides the loose inspiration for Uruguayan director Daniel Hendler’s mordant drama. Renowned Argentine actress Marilú Marini plays Martha Hoffman, an 83-year-old art collector, whose bohemian interests, unabashed promiscuity and spendthrift attitude rankle her prudish daughters.

That description might suggest a kooky caricature, but Martha is written and performed with delicate, grounded naturalism. She is utterly believable (and charming) as a former dancer with a lust for life and love for the grungy, queer, underground artists who are her friends and beneficiaries. The film cuts between Martha’s excruciating stay in the care home and the aftermath of that period, when our heroine is visited by a doctor, Leandro Casares (Daniel Hendler), tasked with confirming her diagnosis. As the shy physician and his brazen, quick-witted patient rub off on each other, this cautionary tale of elder abuse expands into a layered, even triumphant drama about living life to the fullest. (Stream it on Netflix.)

‘The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo’ Diego Céspedes’ glittering, 1980s-set drama unfolds like a fable. In a mining town in Chile’s Atacama Desert, a group of transgender women live in a house bursting with song, dance and sass. The queen bee is Mama Boa (Paula Dinamarca), and the youngest resident is the preteen Lidia (Tamara Cortés), the adopted daughter of the tall, pale and elegant Flamingo (Matías Catalán). The women teach Lidia how to fight and defend herself against rowdy boys; they have

their fair share of practice from handling the miners who both covet and demean them.

When whisperings and accusations of a “plague” culminate in a terrible act of violence, Lidia tries to piece together the truth, and finds herself mired in myths about otherworldly powers and fatal gazes. Céspedes weaves a beautiful metaphorical tale about the AIDS epidemic and the stories people tell to deny reality and find scapegoats. Yet “The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo” doesn’t feel heavy with despair. Everything in the movie has a touch of magic, be it the sparkling landscape, the ornate outfits and makeup, and the poetic dialogue laced with tragedy and love. (Stream it on Mubi.)

‘On Your Lap’

Set in the late 1990s, as Indonesia underwent an economic crisis, Reza Rahadian’s film follows a young mother who takes up a job at a kopi pangku: a cafe where men pay waitresses to sit on their laps and serve them coffee. We meet Sartika (Claresta Taufan) late at night as she’s kicked off a bus; she’s alone, pregnant and in need of work, and ends up in a coastal town dominated by fishing enterprises and seedy karaoke bars. Right from the beginning, the movie is light on exposition — we don’t know where Sartika is from, who got her pregnant, or why she is here. It doesn’t matter; she’s here now, and she needs to survive.

“On Your Lap” unfolds as a romance, following Sartika’s budding relationship with a fishing worker who develops a fondness for her and her son, but as the film proceeds it becomes a sharply observed drama about the ripples caused by the economic crisis in the lives of poor and hardworking people. Radio and TV broadcasts are heard in the background, relating the news of the day, while Rahadian paints a rich picture of everyday life in the town: Youth struggle to find employment, employees are bullied around by bosses, women emigrate to the Middle East for exploitative jobs just to send home money. These form not just the backdrop to Sartika’s story but are the forces that shape it: The political, Rahadian shows us, invariably becomes the personal. (Stream it on Netflix.)

‘Sobriedad, Me Estás Matando’

A movie about a wealthy man-child who hits rock bottom and learns some lessons the hard way may sound tiresomely jaded, but “Sobriedad, Me Estás Matando,” which translates to “Dear sobriety, you are killing me,” is a wonderfully fresh telling of a well-worn tale. The 40-year-old Raffi (Octavio Hinojosa) is as obnoxious as they come: We meet him in the midst of his latest rehab stint, which he is kicked out of for making jokes in poor taste, smoking during therapy and, generally, being an unrepentant jerk. His icy, wealthy parents have also had enough, and Raffi ends up first on the street and then on the couch of an old friend.

For much of the movie, Raffi stumbles about, running into people from his past; each encounter is an occasion for some very effective cringe comedy (it’s impressive how utterly petulant Raffi manages to be while still keeping you glued to the screen) and a glimpse into how our antihero ended up here. A tragic accident, a prison stint, unresolved desires, unprocessed guilt all slowly come to the surface. But at no point does the movie give into cloying sentimentality: The wit remains acrid until the very end. (Stream it on Hulu.)

‘The Flats’

The decades-ago terror of the Troubles still haunts the residents of New Lodge, a housing estate in Belfast, in Alessandra Celesia’s audacious documentary. Once a hotbed for armed conflict between the Irish Republican Army and loyalist forces, the area is now afflicted by drug trafficking, abuse and poverty. “The Flats” focuses on two residents of New Lodge: Joe, a volatile former IRA fighter still battling demons from his past, and Jolene, a young survivor of domestic violence whose sister has been debilitated by addiction.

A loose, intimate camera follows Jolene as she navigates daily life and observes closely as Joe converses with Rita, a suicide prevention counselor. Celesia invites her subjects to recreate painful memories with the assistance of family members and friends, but these stagings aren’t attempts at catharsis; if anything, reenacting the funeral of his uncle and cousins, whose murder Joe witnessed at age 9, only provokes his anger further rather than release it. Raw, intense and up-close, “The Flats” uses these scenes not so much as therapy but as a means of interrogating an anachronism: Why does this community still seem intractably entangled in the wounds of a bygone era? The film is an eye-opening look at the workings of trauma — how, when left unattended, it trickles through time and generations like a poison. (Stream it on Ovid.)

Analysis-software stocks bounce back - now comes the hard part

PUERTO RICO STOCKS

Software stocks have rebounded from a punishing selloff as investors are betting that AI may boost the sector rather than leaving it for dead.

The iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF has surged nearly 42% from its April low, turning fears that AI would rip the heart out of the industry into hopes that software firms will enlist AI as a valuable ally. The software ETF is down under 2% for 2026 after earlier falling 30%.

Now investors are flocking to firms they see succeeding at integrating AI and adjusting price models by charging clients based on actual usage – while steering clear of firms

the tires on shares they considered too beaten-down while the broader technology sector, including chip stocks, was surging as investors pinned their hopes on the boom in AI.

The bounceback rally accelerated last week when strong financial results and guidance from Snowflake and MongoDB boosted sentiment. Thomas Blakey, managing director of software equity research at Cantor, said the results show that “software companies will be beneficiaries of AI.”

“We always advise being selective,” said Blakey, who rates both stocks ‘overweight’, but he said that “investors baked in a scenario that was too negative with regards to AI.”

Abodada-Notario

The latest star turn for software came with Monday’s rally following comments from Jensen Huang, the CEO of AI chip leader Nvidia, who told the Computex conference in Taipei that AI agents will boost software demand as the “world is no longer limited by the number of people, therefore those agents are going to use more tools than ever.”

“This is actually an incredible time to be a software company,” Huang said.

that are too dependent on traditional pricing, which involves subscription fees based on headcount.

Analysts and portfolio managers point to security providers Datadog and Palo Alto Networks, chip design software developer Synopsys and giants Oracle and Microsoft as some of their favorites.

“While AI is causing massive disruption, it is remapping the industry rather than destroying it,” said Daniel Morgan, portfolio manager at Synovus Trust in Atlanta.

After the recent months-long software selloff, many investors warned that the move was overdone and began kicking

The question now is what happens next in a sector where investors have come to expect volatility.

The software ETF fell 2.8% on Tuesday. Its drags included a 4.2% pullback by Salesforce, which had advanced 9.7% on Monday amid excitement about its role as a major investor in and user of Anthropic, which filed for a market debut.

Many investors say that the key is to choose the right stocks for the longer haul.

Jonathan Cofsky, a portfolio manager at Janus Henderson, likes cloud security company Datadog because of its usage-based pricing and increasing demand from data centers powering AI. Datadog stock hit a record high on Monday and has almost doubled in value this year, including a 31% one-day rally after it boosted annual financial targets on strong demand for security tools, thanks to AI.

Doug Rogers, portfolio manager at Eaton Vance, likes Palo Alto. While its firewall sales depend partly on clients’ user numbers, Rogers sees increased security threats boosting profits.

“As the number of potential threats and vulnerabilities and the awareness of those vulnerabilities increases, so should the price Palo Alto is able to charge for defending against them,” Rogers said. Palo Alto fell on Tuesday but hit a record high on Monday and was still up more than 61% for the year.

Iran attacks Gulf nations, further straining ceasefire

Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday repeated the Trump administration’s claim that the war with Iran “has concluded” even as U.S. allies Kuwait and Bahrain were reeling from a barrage of Iranian missiles and drones fired at them earlier in the day.

The barrage was one of the biggest attacks on Persian Gulf nations since the U.S.Iran ceasefire took effect in early April. Kuwait’s only international airport was struck, killing a civilian and injuring scores of others, Kuwaiti authorities said. Videos showed one of the airport’s terminals ablaze and with a gaping hole in its roof.

Iran has attacked the Gulf’s major energy exporters and trade hubs since the beginning of the war to increase economic pressure on the Trump administration and to punish neighbors that host U.S. troops. Negotiations aimed at reopening the vital shipping lanes of the Strait of Hormuz have dragged on without a resolution.

Iran and the United States traded blame for the attack on the airport. A spokesperson for Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said it had not fired at the terminal and the dam-

age was caused when U.S. Patriot systems failed to intercept Iranian missiles and fell on the terminal. The U.S. military responded in a statement on social media, calling the Iranian claim “Totally FALSE” and saying that Iran had “struck the civilian airport with drones.”

A marked uptick in hostilities in recent

days has called into question a ceasefire that both sides say remains in effect.

The U.S. Central Command said in an earlier statement that Iran had also launched missiles and drones at Bahrain on Wednesday, as well as at civilian mariners in nearby waters. Those attacks did not hit their targets, the military said.

The Revolutionary Guard said it had targeted the headquarters of the U.S. 5th Fleet in Bahrain and an American vessel it identified as the Panaya.

The strike on Kuwait International Airport’s Terminal 1 killed an Indian resident of the country and wounded at least 63 other people, according to Kuwaiti authorities. The attack included 13 ballistic missiles and 17 drones, they said.

In recent years, U.S. forces have operated out of a site within that airport complex, but it was unclear if they are still doing so or if that site was the intended target.

By early afternoon local time, some flights had resumed from a different terminal.

Here’s what else we’re covering:

— U.S.-Israel relations: President Donald Trump said in an interview with The New York Post published Wednesday that he had used expletives in a recent phone

conversation with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel but said they have a broadly positive relationship. In a separate interview, Netanyahu acknowledged what he described as “tactical disagreements” with the president but said the two men “always find a way to work them out.”

— Ayatollah meeting: Trump also told the Post he hoped to meet with Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, “at some point.” It was far from clear whether the hard-line ayatollah — who is believed to have been injured in U.S.-Israeli strikes and has not been seen in public for months — would be willing to meet with Trump.

— Lebanon fighting: Israel continued to target the Iranian-backed, Lebanese group Hezbollah on Wednesday, killing at least six people in strikes near the southern city of Tyre, Lebanon’s state-run news agency reported. The fighting came even as Israeli and Lebanese officials were scheduled to meet in Washington on Wednesday for another round of U.S.-mediated talks.

— Market reaction: Oil prices rose Wednesday as military strikes in the Middle East cast doubt on efforts by Iran and the United States to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil and gas shipping route.

Fire at a New Delhi hotel kills at least 21

Flames coursed through a six-story hotel Wednesday in a dense neighborhood in New Delhi, killing at least 21 people and injuring dozens more, according to the city’s fire department. The blaze appears to be the deadliest in the city in at least four years.

The Delhi fire department reported that eight crews had responded to a call received at 8:48 a.m. local time regarding the hotel, the Flourish Stay B&B, near Malviya Nagar, in the southern part of the capital.

The service said that 26 people had been rescued, with survivors sent to nearby hospitals, and that the fire had been extinguished. Speaking at a news conference, a doctor treating the injured said eight had been put on ventilators. As of Wednesday evening, the cause of the fire was unknown;

the city police and local government have opened investigations.

Istkhar Ahmad, 49, a driver who has lived in the neighborhood for 25 years, said he saw the fire break out around 8:30 a.m.

“I saw a small fire in the guesthouse; it looked like it started in the kitchen,” he said. “Then we saw people upstairs crying, trying to break their windows.”

By the time rescue workers arrived, Ahmad said, fire had engulfed the whole building. He and other bystanders grabbed bedding and quilts from a nearby shop and arranged them below the hotel, to break the fall of those who jumped: about 10 or 12, he estimated.

There are several private hospitals on major streets around the tightly packed neighborhood, and many of their patients come from other countries. Afghans, other Central Asians and Africans sometimes trav-

el to India for affordable treatments unavailable at home.

Relatives of hospital patients from abroad often accompany them and stay in cheap lodgings nearby. The Flourish Stay B&B is in Hauz Rani, historically a Muslim village, that has been surrounded by Delhi’s urban sprawl. Its narrow lanes are overhung with electrical and internet wiring, and packed with pharmacies and other businesses.

“How they can run such a big hotel in a residential area?” Tauseef Khan, 35, a lawyer who lives nearby, asked. “There are at least 10 such hotels in this area,” he added.

Delhi’s government requires that a double-bed occupancy room must be at least 120 square feet. Khan estimated that there were “maybe 50 to 100 people staying here, in about 30 different rooms.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences on social media, adding that

India’s government would offer $2,000 to the next of kin of those killed in the fire and that those injured would receive more than $500 each.

A series of accidents earlier this year called attention to unsafe housing conditions in India’s capital. On May 30, a building collapsed less than a mile from Wednesday’s fire, killing six people. Two other fires last month killed nine people in eastern Delhi and destroyed much of a furniture market in a northeastern part of the city.

The Delhi Fire Service has warned that short circuits caused by the heavy use of air conditioning are a significant risk factor. Daily high temperatures in the capital hit an average of 103 degrees Fahrenheit through the month of May, slightly higher than usual despite unseasonal rainfall, and sometimes went as high as 114.

Trump endorses right-wing presidential candidate in Colombia

President Donald Trump inserted himself into Colombia’s presidential election on Tuesday night, energetically endorsing a right-wing candidate in what has been a pattern of putting his finger on the scale of foreign elections during his second term.

Posting on Truth Social, Trump congratulated Abelardo De La Espriella, who advanced in Sunday’s election to a second round in June, when he will face a candidate from the party of the sitting left-wing president, Gustavo Petro.

“The results of this Election are very important to the future of Colombia and its relationship to the United States,” Trump wrote in a post full of praise for De La Espriella, whom he referred to by his campaign moniker, “El Tigre,” or The Tiger. “Because of his tremendous accomplishments in life, and his political support for me, personally, it is my Honor to give Abelardo my Complete and Total Endorsement.”

Trump, whose support of like-minded leaders has helped to fuel a right-wing wave in Latin America, also characterized the candidate’s rival in the runoff, Iván Cepeda, as a “Radical Left Marxist.”

Cepeda’s campaign said it did not have an immediate response.

On Tuesday night, De La Espriella thanked Trump for his “decisive support,” promising to strengthen U.S.-Colombia relations “like never before.”

“It’s fundamental to understand that the United States is decisive to fight crime, narcoterrorism and liberate Colombia once and for all from so much pain and so much violence,” he said in an interview with a Colombian news outlet.

An endorsement from the U.S. president, which in the past was all but unthinkable, has become a wild card in elections in the region. Last year, Trump endorsed a right-wing candidate in Honduras’ election who went on to win. He also supported the party of Argentine President Javier Milei in a decisive midterm election.

Trump’s chosen candidate in Colombia is a 47-year-

Because neither candidate’s support surpassed 50%, they will face off again on June 21.

Cepeda, 63, a solemn senator best known for his advocacy for victims of Colombia’s armed conflict, ran a far less flashy campaign than De La Espriella. But experts say that he had been buoyed by voters’ support for Petro, Colombia’s first left-wing president, and his efforts to address poverty and represent historically marginalized groups. The two belong to the Pacto Histórico party.

De La Espriella, who once boasted of a lavish lifestyle abroad, has in the past been scrutinized by Colombian journalists over the source of his fortune and his links to Colombian clients embroiled in controversies. The most flagrant of these is Alex Saab, a billionaire tycoon and fixer for Nicolás Maduro, the Venezuelan leader taken into custody by the United States. U.S. prosecutors accused Saab of laundering millions of dollars intended for Venezuela’s poor.

old criminal defense lawyer who has never held office. After spending much of his career in Florida, and more recently, in Florence, Italy, De La Espriella returned to Colombia last year to run for his country’s highest post.

He has pitched himself as an outsider in the vein of Trump, an efficient cost-cutter like Milei and a hard-liner on security similar to El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele. That message has proved to be potent to a population alarmed by a resurgent armed conflict and a rise in violent and organized crime.

De La Espriella rose late in the campaign — on a message that also revolved around traditional values and vanquishing the left — overcoming an establishment candidate on the right who had counted on the support of some of Colombia’s most powerful politicians. De La Espriella captured more than 43% of the vote in Sunday’s election, a few percentage points more than Cepeda.

As De La Espriella rose in the polls, he gained the backing of U.S. Republican lawmakers on the right, from Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar of Florida to Sen. Bernie Moreno of Ohio. On Tuesday, before Trump posted his full-throated endorsement of De La Espriella, Moreno held a call with reporters in which he said U.S. officials had “vetted” De La Espriella and found him to be “impeccable.”

Moreno, who is originally from Colombia, traveled to the country over the weekend to monitor the election. He said it had gone smoothly, remarking on the transparency and orderliness of the process.

Petro has said there were irregularities amounting to fraud, which analysts say raises concerns that he is sowing distrust in the country’s electoral institutions and potentially laying the groundwork for protests. Cepeda, who originally questioned the count, has accepted the results.

On Tuesday, Petro wrote on the social platform X, “When one country interferes in another country’s decisions, freedom dies. I call on all Colombians to vote freely and not allow ourselves to become either slaves or anyone’s colony.”

Sabana Grande’s Smith is women’s softball Week 1 stats leader

Import pitcher Morgan Smith of the Prodigiosas of Sabana Grande delivered the most outstanding performance of the opening weekend of the 2026 Women’s Softball Premier League (LPSF by its initials in Spanish) season.

Smith pitched a no-hitter to lead the Prodigiosas to a 3-0 victory over the Grises of Humacao, becoming the first pitcher to complete a no-hitter in the young season. In six innings of work, the hurler from Phoenix struck out eight opposing batters.

The performance positioned Smith among the league leaders in several statistical categories. The former Rutgers University standout shares the lead in wins with Xeana Kamalani of the Valencianas of Juncos, with both pitchers recording two victories.

Likewise, Smith shares first place in ERA (0.00) with Mexican pitcher Yeraldine Carrión of the Caribeñas of Salinas.

Smith and Carrión also lead the league in shutouts, with one apiece. Carrión achieved hers on Saturday by dominating the Valencianas in a 3-0 victory, allowing just one hit and recording six strikeouts.

In the strikeouts category, Smith shares the top spot with Juncos pitchers Alexis Bermúdez and Alondra Pérez,

all with nine K’s.

On the offensive side, Hailey Guerrero and Tatianna Román -- both of the Valencianas -- lead the league with a .625 batting average. The leaders in total hits are Elicia D’Orazio and Stormy Kotzelnick -- also both from Juncos

-- with six hits each. D’Orazio is batting .600, while Kotzelnick is batting .500. The league lead in doubles is shared by Guerrero, Yahelis Muñoz of the Leonas of Ponce and Ciara Bryan of the Bravas of Cidra, with two each. Muñoz also ranks among the offensive leaders with a batting average of .571.

Meanwhile, Chloe Malau’ulu of the Prodigiosas holds the distinction of hitting the only home run recorded so far this season.

D’Orazio tops the league in runs batted in (RBIs) with six. Additionally, D’Orazio, Guerrero and Nia Carter of the Valencianas share the lead in runs scored, with four each.

In the walks category, Carter, Smith and Julianna Nieves of Sabana Grande share first place with three apiece. Kotzelnick leads in stolen bases with three.

The weekend’s action also marked a historic moment for the Valencianas, as Galis Lozada earned her first victory as a manager in the LPSF with a 3-1 win over the Caribeñas last Saturday.

Following the first weekend of play, the standings show Cidra in first place with a 1-0 record, followed by Juncos and Sabana Grande (both 3-1), Salinas (1-1), Ponce (1-2), and Humacao and the Costaneras of Guánica (both 0-2).

Week 2 play was to begin Wednesday evening with Humacao hosting Salinas.

Being Cristopher Sánchez: Phillies lefty savors a historic month on the mound

They finally found a weakness in Cristopher Sánchez, a few minutes after the Philadelphia Phillies completed a sweep of the Padres in San Diego.

The Phillies wanted a toast to history. They demanded a speech from Sánchez inside the visiting clubhouse. Not everyone could see him, the pitcher with a 44 2/3-inning scoreless streak, but they could hear what he was saying through interpreter Diego D’Aniello.

Sánchez thanked his teammates for their support — in the good and bad times. He thanked God. It was all so special, he said, and that was it. They had a bus to ride up the Pacific Coast to play the Los Angeles Dodgers. It was a brief speech.

“I didn’t do a good job,” Sánchez said later. His teammates disagreed. They are all grateful to witness this, perhaps the second-greatest month for a pitcher in modern MLB history. Sánchez threw 39 innings in May. He struck out 45 batters. He walked three. He did not allow a run.

It just keeps going. It almost feels like it cannot end.

“A little bit,” the Phillies’ interim manager, Don Mattingly, said last week after a 3-0 win. “You just don’t expect him to give up any runs.”

That is an audacious thing to say about a pitcher, even

one of the best in the sport, because that is not how this works. Manny Machado should have hit a ball over the wall in left field, but it died at the warning track in the fourth inning. He should have hit at least a double in the sixth inning, but rookie center fielder Justin Crawford ran and ran until the ball plopped into his glove and he crashed into the padded fence. A bloop should have fallen here or there. Something should have conspired against Sánchez.

Nothing. Sánchez has the longest scoreless streak in Phillies history — since at least 1893, when the current mound distance was set — and probably before that. He has the seventh-longest such streak in MLB since 1920. He has the second-longest one by a left-hander.

So he had to give a speech.

“This is a game; it’s not only about me or about what I do on the mound,” Sánchez said. “It’s about our group. And I think it’s really something special and beautiful to feel the support of the team as a whole.”

What is it like to be Cristopher Sánchez right now?

“Pretty good,” shortstop Trea Turner said, “when they know what’s coming and still can’t hit you.”

“I would imagine you feel like Superman,” said a fellow lefty, Jesús Luzardo. “Just untouchable. And it’s not just given to him. He obviously works extremely hard. Like, he’s earned that. But I would just imagine it feels just like an alltime high. When he’s out there on the mound, he’s flowing,

and I feel like there’s probably not many thoughts.”

Machado said, “He’s one of the best pitchers in the league right now. He has been for the past couple years.”

In the corner of the room, Kyle Schwarber shook his head. He was there when Sánchez, a native of La Romana in the Dominican Republic, made his major league debut five years ago. It was June 6, 2021, and Schwarber was the left fielder for the Washington Nationals. Turner was the shortstop. Sánchez whiffed Turner for his first big league strikeout. Schwarber never faced him; he just remembered staring from the opposing dugout.

“Big lanky kid who threw hard,” Schwarber said. “Then, all of a sudden, he’s turned himself into a monster.”

By now, Sánchez’s transformation is known across the sport. His teammates and coaches are impressed by that, but there is something more. He keeps going. He has discovered different ways to improve, to be a portrait of consistent pitching.

This is the greatest measure: Sánchez was not great in his last start in seven scoreless innings. Asked if he had his best stuff, he laughed. “No,” he said. “I don’t think so. No.” But that is one hallmark of greatness: Find a way to compete and compete well without optimal conditions.

Once he navigated the first four innings, he toppled a franchise record that had stood for 115 years. That was Hall of Fame right-hander Grover Cleveland Alexander’s mark, 41

innings in 1911. Sánchez is one inning from eclipsing another Hall of Famer, Carl Hubbell, for the longest scoreless streak for a left-handed pitcher since at least 1920 and maybe ever. (These records are a bit muddled.)

It has felt impossible for anyone to encroach on Orel Hershiser’s 59-inning scoreless streak from 1988. The closest anyone has come in the past 30 years was Zack Greinke, who had a 45 2/3-inning streak in 2015.

Sánchez is right there. He joined Hershiser as the only starting pitcher with an entire scoreless month (minimum four starts). Hershiser’s was better; he pitched 55 innings with five shutouts and another 10-inning scoreless outing.

There were great months by other pitchers, but all of them had at least one blemish. Inside the Phillies’ clubhouse, there has been a greater sense of responsibility when Sánchez is on the mound. But they somehow lost one of his starts this month, a 1-0 defeat to the Cleveland Guardians, and they were not crisp in the field to begin last Wednesday’s game. Sánchez was often behind in the count.

“He was a little rough early,” Mattingly said. “I don’t know if this thing’s on his mind at all. He knew he had to get through four. He seemed to settle down a little more after that.”

A smattering of Phillies fans seated behind the dugout acknowledged Sánchez after the fourth inning when he established the franchise record.

He needed only 38 pitches for the next nine outs. Crawford’s catch in the sixth inning was the exclamation point.

“It was special,” Crawford said. “It was special to be a part of it. It’s been really fun watching him pitch throughout the whole year. Just being able to help a little bit was really cool.”

Pitcher Cristopher Sánchez has the longest scoreless streak in Philadelphia Phillies history -- since at least 1893, when the current mound distance was set -- and probably before that. In the seventh, after his 504th and final pitch of May, Sánchez screamed. He pounded his left fist against his glove. He has a 1.47 ERA this season. He was to resume his historic quest Wednesday at Citizens Bank Park, against the Padres again. Sánchez did not love all of the postgame attention; he deflected the praise and lauded the athletic training staff and his coaches.

But he is the one who stands alone, the owner of a feat that no one who has worn a Phillies uniform for more than a century can match.

“It’s just really special,” Sánchez said, “to share things like this with this tremendous group that we have in this organization.”
