Meteorologists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Weather Service at the Climate Prediction Center are forecasting above-normal hurricane activity in the Atlantic basin this year.
NOAA’s forecast for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, calls for an 85% chance of an above-normal season, a 10% chance of a near-normal season, and a 5% chance of a belownormal season.
NOAA forecasts a range of 17 to 25 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher). Of those, 8 to 13 are expected to become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including four to seven major hurricanes (Category three, four or five; with winds of 111 mph or higher). Meteorologists have 70% confidence in these ranges.
“I think all systems are go for a hyperactive season,” Phil Klotzbach, an expert in seasonal hurricane forecasts at Colorado State University, told The New York Times.
The upcoming hurricane season is expected to have above-normal activity due to a confluence of factors, including near-record ocean temperatures in the Atlantic, the development of La Niña conditions in the Pacific, reduced trade winds in the Atlantic, and reduced wind shear. all of which tend to favor the formation of tropical storms.
“Severe weather and emergencies can happen at any time, so people and communities need to be prepared today,” said Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Deputy Administrator Erik Hooks. “We are already seeing storms move across the country that can bring additional hazards such as tornadoes, flooding and hail. Taking a proactive approach to our increasingly challenging climate landscape today can make a difference in how people can recover tomorrow.”
As one of the strongest observed El Niño weather patterns comes to an end, NOAA scientists predict a rapid transition to La Niña conditions, which are conducive to hurricane activity in the Atlantic because La Niña tends to reduce wind shear in the tropics. At the same time, the abundant ocean heat content in the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean Sea creates more energy to fuel storm development.

NOAA will implement improvements to its forecast communications, decision support, and storm recovery efforts this season. These include:
– The National Hurricane Center (NHC) will expand its Spanish-language product offering to include all public notices, Tropical Cyclone Discussion, Tropical Cyclone Update, and Key Messages in the Atlantic basin.
– Beginning Aug. 15, the NHC will begin issuing an experimental version of the forecast cone chart that includes a representation of the tropical storm and hurricane landfall watches and warnings in effect for the continental United States. Research indicates that adding ground-based alerts and warnings to the cone chart will help communicate land-based hazards during tropical cyclone events without overcomplicating the current version of the chart.
– This season, the NHC will be able to issue tropical cyclone watches and warnings in the United States with regular or intermediate public warnings. This means that if alert updates and warnings are needed for storm surge or winds, the NHC will be able to notify the public in an intermediate advisory instead of having to wait for the next full advisory that is issued every six hours.
“With another active hurricane season approaching, NOAA’s commitment to keeping all Americans informed with life-saving information is unwavering,” NOAA Administrator Rick Spinrad said in a written statement. “AI-enabled language translations and a new representation of onshore wind threats in the forecast cone are just two examples of the proactive steps our agency is taking to meet our mission to save lives and protect property.”
The approaching hurricane season also features the potential for an above-normal West African monsoon, which can produce East African waves that generate some of the strongest and longest-lasting Atlantic storms. Finally, light trade winds allow hurricanes to grow in intensity without the interruption of strong wind shear and also minimize ocean cooling. Human-caused climate change is warming the Earth’s oceans globally and in the Atlantic basin, and melting ice on land is causing sea levels to rise, increasing the risk of storm surge. By THE STAR STAFFThe Assembly of Delegates of the Brotherhood of Exempt Non-Teaching Employees (HEEND by its Spanish acronym) at the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) voted unanimously on Thursday to authorize the implementation of the strike vote at the university.
The HEEND board of directors may declare a state of strike at any time. The move was in response to what HEEND leaders said was the intransigence and refusal of the university
administration to ratify the union’s new collective bargaining agreement (CBA).
Last February, HEEND managed to resolve the roadblock related to a financial stipulation that gives its members a bonus of $3,000 for signing the CBA. After overcoming that major hurdle to finish the negotiation, UPR’s governing board has not fulfilled its responsibility to ratify the CBA negotiated by President Luis A. Ferrao, the HEEND leaders said.
The refusal of the employer’s decision to sign the entire agreement has left employees with no choice but to fight for their rights, the union said in a press release.
“We have exhausted all avenues of dialogue and negotiation,” HEEND President Carlos J. de León said. “Our Labor Protections are at stake, and we cannot allow them to be violated. The strike is our answer, legitimate and necessary.”
“Since the negotiation culminated last December 2023, the Collective Bargaining Agreement was never in controversy,” HEEND Vice President Lorraine Mejías said. “Whatever story the administration is sketching right now for not signing the Convention [amounts to] invalid excuses, resulting in a threat to our institution, so the strike vote is activated.”
A coalition of various trade union organizations, some of which are also at the negotiating table with the university administration, as well as associations of employees, students, and retirees, showed their support for HEEND and will be demonstrating alongside its members.
Following the strike announcement, Ferrao said the UPR administration has been diligent and has maintained
an ongoing dialogue with the HEEND leaders.
“Last February 2024, I signed with the leaders of HEEND the approval of the economic stipulation that grants the members of the organization a non-recurring bonus of $3,000, taking into consideration that the HEEND agreed not to request a salary increase, recognizing the fiscal situation of the institution,” Ferrao said. “Consequently, it was determined that, once the Remuneration and Classification Plan had been approved, it would be the appropriate way to conduct a fair salary review for all, in line with the central government’s public service reform.”
“Meanwhile, I recently submitted to the governing board the HEEND Collective Bargaining Agreement, with the agreed clauses. If accepted by the governing board, the agreement will be submitted to the Financial Oversight and Management Board, in accordance with fiscal policy,” the UPR president added.
“We are instructing our membership to pick up their belongings and stop cooperating with the university administration,” de León said. “We make a call to the university governing board to ratify our collective bargaining agreement at its regular meeting on May 30. In the meantime, we’ll be performing demonstrations on the 11 campuses and next Wednesday, May 29, we will take our indignation to La Fortaleza to demand that Gov. Pedro Pierluisi bring order at home. If the [UPR] governing board and the governor do not attend to our demands, we will be forced to close campuses.”
Ninth-grader Lorena Pachiardi has created and developed a prototype of a low-cost prosthetic hand on a three-dimensional (3D) printer.
The project was part of the nonprofit organization Ciencia Puerto Rico’s (CienciaPR) “Seeds of Triumph” program, which promotes STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education for girls in seventh to ninth grade from public and private schools and homeschoolers around the island.
Pachiardi, who will receive her STEM Ambassador title for completing the project, said the idea arose when she saw international news about the war in Ukraine, where a network of volunteers requested low-cost prostheses using a 3D printer for the thousands of children, young people and adults who have suffered injuries to a limb.
“... I began to look for information and research about the e-NABLE community, an open community worldwide where people can collaborate by designing prosthetic hands or arms and printing them three-dimensionally (3D), and I decided to carry out this project focused on engineering and technology in order to impact communities of children, youth and adults with this need,” the student said.
Notably, the prototype of the prosthesis designed and developed by Pachiardi is much lighter, biodegradable and
cheaper than metal prostheses.
“The prototype is really functional for daily use; it can hold any object that is not very heavy and allows, for example, a child to pick up a bottle of water, ride a bicycle and perform different activities or tasks of their day-to-day,” the student said.
Pachiardi said that when the idea for the project began to materialize, she was interested in finding a person who needed
a prosthetic hand, and that was when she met an athlete with functional diversity named Lorraine, who trained in taekwondo in a town in western Puerto Rico. When she saw Lorraine’s particular need, she began to develop a second prototype of a prosthesis with the athlete’s measurements and that is currently in process and development. Pachiardi expressed confidence that she will be able to complete it soon.
The young inventor said her desire was to pursue a project that would have an impact on the community of people with some functional diversity, and that would awaken the desire of other female students to be interested in STEM disciplines as an alternative study or professional career. To do this, Pachiardi made a descriptive video of the prototype of the 3D prosthetic hand that she designed and presented through the social networks of the Caribbean Girl Scouts Council in order to reach other girls and the community in general.
In her process of designing and developing the prosthesis prototype, Lorena had the guidance, support and mentorship of Dr. Abraham Schwartz, along with a specialist in 3D technology, Ricardo Nieves, both from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine’s Biomedical Innovation Center.
She also had the support and guidance of several scientists in the field of STEM disciplines who are part of a group of mentors in the “Seeds of Triumph” program, among other collaborators.
A new collective bargaining agreement between the Brotherhood of Exempt Non-Teaching Employees and the University of Puerto Rico was reached inJustice Secretary Domingo Emanuelli Hernández announced Thursday that Jenniel Alexander Rodríguez García was sentenced to serve 62 years in prison after pleading guilty to murdering an elderly couple in the municipality of Naguabo.
“The people of Puerto Rico were shocked by the atrocious and violent crime committed by this young man who was only 18 years old,” the justice secretary said in a written statement. “Perversity and evil were seen in the actions of Rodríguez García. Our elderly population must be protected by everyone. Our older adults deserve to live in an environment of love, tranquility and protection. I extend my solidarity to the family and loved ones of this couple.”
“I recognize the work of the team of prosecutors and police officers who worked tirelessly to achieve justice for the victims of this crime and that this vile crime will not go unpunished,” he added.
Judge Marielis Rosario of the Humacao Court handed down a sentence of 50 years for the crime of second-degree murder and 12 years for violation of the Weapons Law, which totals 62 years in prison that will be served consecutively. She
Gay rights activist Pedro Julio Serrano demanded that the government not parole a convicted serial killer Ángel Colón Maldonado, dubbed Ángel de los Solteros, who targeted homosexual men in a string of killings in the 1980s.
Colón Maldonado was sentenced to over 300 years in prison in 1987 for the murders of Luis Manuel González López, a dentist; renowned model and social-life writer Iván Frontera; and Cuban musician Gabriel Faxas de Miguel.
Colón Maldonado, who committed the crimes as a teenager, later confessed to having committed at least six murders. Of all the murders, Frontera’s killing was the most notorious because he was tied up and stabbed over 100 times.
“It is inconceivable that the release of one of the most despicable murderers in our history is even being considered,” Serrano asserted. “Even when the hearing on his case is held on May 31 by the Parole Board, Ángel Colón Maldonado must remain in prison. Getting him out of jail would send a wrong and dangerous message that the lives of LGBTQ+ people are worthless. Getting him out of jail would be a criminal act.”
also sentenced Rodríguez García to 15 years for aggravated arson, 20 years for aggravated robbery and three years for destruction of evidence, to be served concurrently.
Rodríguez García murdered Henry Irizarry, 75, and Genevive Rodríguez, 80, when he was discovered trying to steal a motor vehicle that was at the couple’s residence. The now convicted man was a neighbor of the couple.
Prosecutors Yamil Juarbe, Miguel García, Jaime Perea and Rosa Molina, assigned to the Humacao Prosecutor’s Office, presented expert and documentary evidence to prove Rodríguez García’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Rodríguez García accepted having committed the acts through a pre-agreed allegation with the prosecutor’s office.
“Today we did justice to Mr. Henry Irizarry, Mrs. Genevive Rodríguez and their entire family,” Juarbe said. “With this prison sentence our victims can have the peace of mind that there is one less murderer on the street.”
The investigation was led by agent José Caraballo Molina of the Puerto Rico Police Bureau’s Homicide Division.
The Puerto Rico Para Todes spokesman said that in a letter he wrote a few years ago, Colón Maldonado acknowledged having murdered seven gay men. Furthermore, he indicated that he was tried in court, but that he believed his murders were justified by his fundamentalist religious belief.
“Given the state of emergency due to gender violence and hate crimes that we are experiencing, we cannot, under any circumstances, allow this serial killer to be on the streets,” Serrano said. “If the government agrees to this request, we will not have learned anything from the terrible release of Hermes Ávila from prison that allowed him to murder Ivette Joan Meléndez Vega. This has to stop now.”
The Parole Board acknowledged that Colón Maldonado is on a list of prison inmates who would be evaluated for parole eligibility, but provided no additional comments.
In September, some $11 million in federal funds allocated to the “Child Care” program under the Administration for the Comprehensive Care and Development of Children (ACUDEN by its Spanish acronym) will no longer be available, impacting mental health services for the youth population in Puerto Rico.
The information came out during a hearing of the House of Representatives Southeast Region Development Committee held earlier this week to address House Resolution 204, a probe into projects and programs to meet the needs of children residing in Arroyo, Caguas, Cayey, Cidra, Guayama, Gurabo, Maunabo, Patillas and Yabucoa.
Yulissa Rivera Santiago, ACUDEN’s director of legal affairs, broke down the funding amounts allocated to the programs the
agency manages, including the “Head Start/Early Head Start” and Child Care programs.
The consolidated total of funds that ACUDEN disbursed for the municipalities of the region was about $736,000 for Arroyo, about $1.2 million for Caguas, $7.2 million for Cayey, $1.1 million for Gurabo, almost $613,000 for Maunabo, $622,000 for Patillas, and $12.5 million for Yabucoa. Committee Chairman Luis “Narmito” Ortiz Lugo requested the data from Santa Isabel and Guayama since they were not available.
Consequently, Ortiz Lugo questioned the effectiveness of payments to the municipalities participating in the Child Care programs. However, the agency could not respond because that information was not part of the explanatory brief submitted by ACUDEN Administrator Roberto Carlos Pagán Santiago, who had been excused from the hearing.
ACUDEN revealed meanwhile that on Sept. 30 the $11
million allocated to the Child Care program will be lost, raising concerns from Ortiz Lugo and the Mental Health and Anti-Addiction Services Administration (ASSMCA).
“We understood that the project was going to continue, so without a doubt today we have to knock on the doors of other agencies to ensure that, perhaps it will not be $11 million, but that these services can continue,” said Juan Rivera Meléndez, assistant administrator of mental health prevention and promotion at ASSMCA, who also called the services “vital.”
The discontinuation of the Child Care program represents a challenge for the ASSMCA’s Division of Children, Youth and Their Families, whose specialized service centers impact children from age three to age 20, serving mental health cases and intensive outpatient programs, such as those for substance treatments, specialized trauma treatments and early intervention in psychosis.
Meteorologists in Miami, it is fair to say, are accustomed to drama: sunny-day flooding, severe rainstorms, strong hurricanes.
So it is telling — and scary — that they seem at a loss for words to describe the extreme heat that the city experienced last weekend, a full month before summer.
“It’s completely crazy, what just happened,” said Brian McNoldy, a senior research scientist at the University of Miami.
“It’s insane,” said John Morales, a meteorologist for ClimaData, a private weather forecasting and consulting firm, and a hurricane specialist at WTVJ-TV, the NBC station in Miami. “Not only is it insane, it is also dangerous.”
They were talking about the heat index, a measure of how hot it really feels outside, taking into account humidity along with temperature. The heat index reached 112 degrees on Saturday and Sunday, breaking the previous daily record by an astonishing 11 degrees.
Sunday’s high of 96 degrees was also record-breaking, McNoldy said. Saturday’s high of 94 was 1 degree shy of that day’s record. All of this in May, normally a sufferable month in Miami compared with the three or four that follow.
“Even if they happened at what is normally the most uncomfortable part of the year,” McNoldy said, referring to the first two weeks of August, “those days would have been extraordinary.”
Last year was the hottest in Florida since 1985, with coastal waters reaching 90 degrees, bleaching coral and possibly contributing to the mysterious deaths of endangered sawfish.

This year, forecasters expect an exceptionally high number of hurricanes, in part because the Atlantic Ocean has remained abnormally warm.
Increasingly extreme weather, including stronger hurricanes and worsening floods, have led to the withdrawal of major insurers from the state and to some of the highest insurance premiums in the country.
Now, extreme heat appears to be reshaping shoulder seasons, too. The heat index in Key West, about 160 miles south of Miami, reached 115 degrees on May 15, according to McNoldy, shattering the previous record for the day by 17 degrees.
South Florida is warm and humid much
of the year, but only rarely does (or did) the air temperature reach the mid-90s. What turns the region’s heat dangerous is when high temperatures combine with very high humidity, which can make it feel oppressively hot.
That is how it went over the weekend.
Stepping outdoors felt like walking into a broiler, even well into the night. Taking three showers a day was not out of the question.
On Sunday, people packed a beach in Key Biscayne, a barrier island just east of Miami, where the water felt more like deep summer than late spring.
Last week Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican who has backed programs to make communities more resilient to extreme weather,
signed legislation deleting many mentions of climate change from Florida policy — in one of the states most vulnerable to climate change.
On Saturday, Steve MacLaughlin, a meteorologist for WTVJ, urged viewers to weigh elected leaders’ decisions while experiencing punishing temperatures.
“The entire world is looking to Florida to lead in climate change, and our government is saying that climate change is no longer the priority it once was,” he said.
“Please keep in mind the most powerful climate change solution is the one you already have in the palm of your hands: the right to vote,” MacLaughlin added. “We will never tell you who to vote for, but we will tell you this: We implore you to please do your research and know that there are candidates that believe in climate change, and that there are solutions — and there are candidates that don’t.”
Last month, DeSantis enacted a law banning local governments from requiring employers to provide workers with heat protections, after Miami-Dade County came close to adopting the nation’s strictest requirements for providing outdoor workers with water, rest and shade.
Esteban Wood, policy director for WeCount, which represents farmworkers, plant nursery workers and construction workers in Miami-Dade County and pushed for the protections, said spring is the peak season for tropical plant horticulture and did not typically coincide with extreme heat.
“Now, it does,” he said. “We are seeing temperatures that these workers have never seen in their lives.”
By Tuesday afternoon, thunderstorms began rolling across Miami. In some places, it hailed.
The tornado had just hit Greenfield, Iowa, and residents were already using skid loaders to clear streets. With the hospital damaged, they took the wounded to a medical triage center at the local lumberyard. And across western Iowa, paramedics and police officers were speeding toward the small town to help.
“Everybody became little makeshift ambu-
lances,” said Ray Sorensen, a member of the Iowa House of Representatives who lives in Greenfield, and who said he helped with the rescues after racing back to town shortly after the storm hit Tuesday afternoon. “We pulled a guy from the rubble and put him on a little makeshift stretcher that we made, threw him in the back of a truck.”
On Wednesday, the roughly 2,000 residents of Greenfield, 60 miles southwest of Des Moines, began to get a clearer look at the destruction all around. Gov. Kim Reynolds said some areas had
been “flattened into debris,” and the National Weather Service reported “at least EF3 damage” in the town, using the 0-to-5 rating system for tornado severity.
State officials said Wednesday evening that four people in the Greenfield area had died and at least 35 more were treated for injuries. In nearby Adams County, another person died from storm-related causes, the medical examiner said.
Around Greenfield, the scenes of destruction began abruptly, with lush green yards transi-
tioning into the chaos of splintered lumber and lawns littered with household items — a cooler, a sink. Outside the local hospital, shredded tree branches were scattered across a lawn and a board had shattered the window of a parked car. Longtime residents stared at battered homes, some damaged beyond repair.
“It was just a little house,” said Jane Woodside, a retired high school instructor. “But I loved my little house.”

The damage was as vexing as it was immense — some homes were reduced to slabs, while others were essentially untouched. The tornado had taken Woodside’s roof and blown out the windows on her home but left a rosary unscathed next to her favorite chair. The celery she had been chopping just before the storm sat undisturbed on the kitchen counter.
twisted pieces of metal, items sucked out of homes and debris. Much of their bark had been ripped off. Cars and trucks were totaled, their windows blown out and exteriors smashed. Other vehicles were no longer where their owners had parked them.
Raymond Young said he was in his neighbor’s garage talking Tuesday as the tornado approached. He said he ran down the stairs into his friend’s basement just in time.
Many in town said they had been warned of the danger by tornado sirens or emergency alerts on their phones. When the storm blew in late in the afternoon, it overwhelmed the senses.
“It was five to 10 seconds, and then his garage was gone,” said Young, who is retired, and whose own home was knocked off its foundation. “If we’d have waited five to 10 seconds, we’d have been dead.”
“Just, the pressure change — our ears popped and it felt hard to breathe,” said Sarah Wildin, an assistant manager at a gas station, who rode out the storm in her basement and whose ground floor had significant damage. “It sounds worse than a freight train. People always say it sounds like a freight train. I mean, I guess that’s the closest thing you can describe it to, but there are really no words in the human experience.”
As rescue crews sorted through the wreckage, residents were beginning to reflect on a proud community that was indelibly changed. Sorensen, the state legislator, said “it’s a completely different town now.” The business where he gets his oil changed, he said, had been “completely flattened.”
“The devastating part is like, Did we lose these great, great business owners, these great people?” Sorensen, a Republican, said in an interview. “Are they just going to pull up stakes because it’s just too much to come back from something like this?”
Across town, the branches of old-growth trees that remained standing were filled with
Kendalyn Huff stood outside the Tiger Drive-In on Wednesday morning, a restaurant that she runs with her husband, welcoming people who crossed a debris-riddled lot to take her up on an offer of free refreshments.
“We’re going to give ice cream away and soda because it’s all we can do,” she said.
Huff said her home sustained only minor damage, but she choked up as she spoke of a family member who she was told had died after being crushed in another house.
It has been a particularly brutal spring in Iowa, which is still recovering from an outbreak of tornadoes last month that caused extensive damage the small town of Minden, about 70 miles from Greenfield.
“I was just in Minden,” Reynolds, a Republican, said at a news conference Wednesday, “and that was horrific. And I think there’s even more debris and just more impacted here. So it is just horrific. It’s hard to describe until you can actually see it, the devastation.”
Bruce Nordstrom, who along with three other members of the Nordstrom family transformed a small chain of Pacific Northwest shoe stores into an international fashion retail giant with more than 150 locations worldwide, died last Saturday at his home in Seattle. He was 90.
His death was confirmed by a company spokesperson.
As a grandson of John W. Nordstrom, the company’s Swedish immigrant founder, Bruce Nordstrom was part of the third generation of the family to run the company jointly, sharing power and making decisions by consensus, an unusual but successful Nordstrom tradition that continues to this day.
He shared leadership with his cousins John N. Nordstrom and Jim Nordstrom, who were brothers, and Jack McMillan, who was married to their cousin Loyal Nordstrom.
Management by committee is considered a business school formula for disaster, but the Nordstrom family, starting with Bruce’s father, Everett, and Everett’s brothers Elmer and Lloyd, decided that they could be more effective as co-leaders of the company, which was founded in 1901 in Seattle.
When Lloyd Nordstrom called 30-yearold Bruce into his office in 1963 and named him president of the company, the younger Nordstrom accepted the post but soon decided that he would emulate his father’s generation and share leadership with his three relatives.
“Obviously, the arrangement worked out great,” Bruce Nordstrom wrote in a 2007 autobiography, “Leave It Better Than You Found It.” “It was marvelous for them and it was marvelous for me because it felt like a weight had been taken off my shoulders.”
Robert Spector, author of “The Nordstrom Way,” a 1996 book about the company’s vaunted customer service reputation, noted that Bruce Nordstrom was “the nominal leader of the group.” But the company’s egalitarian system, with each executive in charge of an area of expertise, worked because of a combination of pride and humility, with the company always coming first before the needs of any individual.
“Bruce was a very humble guy but a very prideful guy,” Spector said in an interview for this obituary in 2019. “He was low-key and didn’t take himself too seriously. But he wanted to win.”

panded the chain from the late 1970s through the ’80s, extending to California and then across the country while adding a full line of clothing and accessories. What had been a regional shoe store chain with less than $40 million in sales became a retail behemoth, operating 182 stores in 28 states and offering online shopping in 30 countries, with sales of more than $9 billion.
When the family opened an outlet in Southern California in 1978, Bruce Nordstrom and his cousins encountered a wave of skepticism about their planned growth. “There were some people around at the time who said: ‘Why are you going to mess it up by opening there? You guys do all right in the Northwest, but it’s a different, more sophisticated customer’” in California, “‘and you are going to blow it,’ ” Nordstrom said in an interview with Footwear News in 2018.
Though mild-mannered, he was nonetheless an ambitious and determined leader whose response to that negativity only drove him to work harder, he said. “I liked proving that we could really do something,” he said. “We evolved, moved around and had success. Success gave us the confidence to push on.”
Nordstrom acknowledged that the com-
pany’s leaders had occasional differences. “We don’t agree all the time,” he told Footwear News, “but we vote when we need to decide things. Sometimes, behind closed doors, there might be smoke. But we are committed to finding a solution. When we walk out, we walk out as one.”
Bruce Allen Nordstrom was born in Seattle on Oct. 1, 1933. His mother, Elizabeth
(Jones) Nordstrom, who was known as Libby, was an accomplished singer who performed on the radio.
During World War II, when he was 9, Bruce began working at the Nordstrom shoe store in downtown Seattle on Saturdays and in the summers. He swept floors and broke down cardboard boxes for 25 cents an hour. Standing in line with the other employees to collect his wages, he was proud to be a paid staff member, he recalled in his memoir.
He went on to receive his bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington in Seattle, where most of the Nordstrom men graduated, and rowed for the school’s renowned crew team. While finishing college, he met Fran Wakeman, a freshman from Seattle, and after an on-again, off-again romance for years, the couple married. They had three sons, Blake, Peter and Erik, all of whom went to work for Nordstrom.
After graduating from the university in 1955, Nordstrom joined the Army and served for six months as a lieutenant at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. When he returned to Seattle, he went to work running one of the company’s stores. His future in management was set. Nordstrom retired in 2006 as chair but continued to be a vital presence in the company’s stores. Forbes this year estimated his wealth at $1 billion.
Fran Nordstrom died in 1984. Four years later, Nordstrom married Jeannie O’Roark. His oldest son, Blake, died of cancer in 2019. He is survived by his wife; his sons Peter and Erik, who continue to help run the company; a sister, Anne Gittinger; and seven grandchildren.
The global equity bull run is showing signs of fatigue, with most major stock indexes not expected to repeat last year’s stellar performance, according to a Reuters poll of stock analysts who also said a near-term correction was unlikely.
With financial markets paring back 2024 rate cut expectations from major central banks and most stock indexes already trading close to lifetime highs, further gains were expected to come at a much slower pace.
A resilient global economy, an ongoing boom in technology stocks and their considerable weight in equity indexes, especially in the U.S., are likely to prevent any major drop in stock prices in the near-term, the poll forecast.
A strong 60% majority of analysts, 51 of 85, who answered an additional question in the May 13-22 poll said a correction of 10% or more over the coming three months was unlikely (41) or highly unlikely (10). The remaining said likely (23) or highly likely (11).
“The significant gains seen in many stock markets over the last few months have made our portfolio managers a little more cautious on the outlook...Fading prospects for interest rate cuts, such an important driver of the market rally, also give us further pause for thought,” said Paul Quinsee, head of global equities at JP Morgan Asset Management.
“But fundamentals of corporate profits still look good... Globally, this looks like a much better year for profit growth after a lacklustre period post-COVID.”
Indeed, of the 15 stock market indexes surveyed, on only Britain’s FTSE was expected to achieve last year’s performance. In 2023 nearly all of them gained more than 10%.
“Equity return expectations in 2024 should stay muted – 2023’s double-digit market returns will be hard to duplicate,” said Daniel Morgan, senior portfolio manager at Synovus Trust, adding that stocks “are priced for perfection”.
The benchmark S&P 500 index, which sets the tone for global portfolio flows and is one of the best performers this year with a more than 11% gain, is forecast to end 2024 near current levels.
Japan’s NIKKEI index, up more than 15% for the year, was predicted to add another 5% in the second half of 2024. If realised, this would be the second year in a row where the index has outperformed most of its peers.
European and British stocks, which had a good run this
year as both Britain and euro zone economies escaped a recession, were either predicted to make little headway or shed a little from here by the end of the year.
The Euro STOXX 50 index, France’s CAC 40 and Spain’s IBEX which are up 11.6%, 7.9% and 12.2% respectively this year, were forecast to gain another 1-2%.
Britain’s FTSE, the European STOXX 600 and Germany’s DAX index were seen falling 1.4%, 1.9% and 0.2%, respectively, between now and year-end.
Despite high valuations, India’s benchmark BSE index was forecast to lead its peers and gain more than 8% for the remainder of the year. The Sensex was already up more than 2% for the year.
In the week since the U.S. military and allies attached a temporary pier to the Gaza Strip shoreline, Pentagon planners have come face to face with the logistical nightmare that critics had warned would accompany the endeavor.
The Defense Department predicted that a steady stream of humanitarian aid would be arriving in Gaza via the pier by now, but little relief has reached Palestinians in the besieged strip, officials acknowledged this week. Several trucks were looted as they made their way to a warehouse, the U.N. World Food Program said, and the complexity of operating the pier project in a war zone is continuing to slow distribution.
The problems, as expected, are on the back end of the operation. Looting of aid trucks has continued, officials said, and forced the World Food Program to suspend operations for two days. The U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, suspended food distribution in Rafah on Tuesday, citing lack of security. It added that it had not received any medical supplies for 10 days because of closures and disruptions at the Rafah and Kerem Shalom border crossings.
The project was always expected to be difficult. For one thing, White House policy does not allow U.S. troops to be on the ground in Gaza. So the Pentagon has the ability to start but not finish the mission, a situation one military analyst likened to having the engine of a car but not the wheels.
As the pier project struggles to get going, the situation in Gaza becomes more dire by the day. More than 34,000 people have died and more than 77,000 have been wounded, according to health authorities in the territory. The number of casualties will only increase as Israel expands its operation in Rafah, in southern Gaza.

Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Monday of causing “starvation as a method of war, including the denial of humanitarian relief supplies, deliberately targeting civilians in conflict.” The Israelis vehemently denied the charges.
But many civilians in Gaza are experiencing immense hunger, aid groups say. Palestinians have forcibly taken aid from trucks, which U.N. officials have said reflects the desperation of people trying to feed themselves and their families. Aid groups and the United Nations have also blamed the hunger crisis on black marketers who have seized supplies to sell at inflated prices.
It is extremely difficult to distribute aid without police escorts to protect the convoys from swarms of people, UNRWA and U.S. officials say.
The pier project is the Biden administration’s attempt to alleviate some of the humanitarian suffering in Gaza. Maj. Gen. Patrick S. Ryder, the Pentagon spokesperson, described the process Tuesday as a “crawl-walk-run approach.”
President Joe Biden announced the proj-
ect during his State of the Union address in March, amid warnings that Gaza was on the precipice of famine. The Pentagon built and assembled the pier alongside an Army ship off the coast with involvement from about 1,000 U.S. troops, U.S. officials said. It is connected to central Gaza. Last Friday, the first aid trucks began moving ashore.
So far, however, the operation has fallen short of its goal of bringing in 90 trucks a day and eventually ramping up to 150 trucks. Ten trucks came into the World Food Program warehouse last Friday, the agency said, but Saturday, 11 of 16 trucks were looted. Operations were suspended for two days. On Tuesday, 17 trucks arrived, and 27 on Wednesday.
The Pentagon calls the project JLOTS, short for joint logistics over the shore, a capability that it has used for humanitarian relief in Somalia, Kuwait and Haiti.
Military officials who have worked on past efforts say distributing humanitarian aid to those in need is harder than setting up the infrastructure.
“Getting a pier in place and getting supplies onto the pier and onto shore is one
thing,” Rabih Torbay, president of aid organization Project Hope, said in an interview. “Getting the logistics in place to get the aid to the places that need it the most is a completely different ballgame, and that is where the lack of planning and coordination comes into play.”
Abeer Etefa, a spokesperson for the World Food Program, said a key to overcoming the aid impasse was receiving Israel’s permission to deliver goods on alternative routes. New routes were used Tuesday and Wednesday, and the convoys reached their destinations without incident, she said.
The initial failures of the pier project have reinforced criticisms among some diplomats, who have said the initiative was too expensive and inefficient.
Pentagon officials have privately complained that the Biden administration came up with the pier project with little consultation with the military, which has had to build and operate the venture in the Mediterranean. Defense officials scrambled to put the plan in place after estimating that it would take two months to complete.
Even if all the kinks are ironed out, the sea operation would still be less efficient than a land route, aid organizations say. If the project reaches its goal of getting through 150 trucks per day, the shipments of food and other supplies would still fall short of what aid groups say is needed for a war-ravaged population. Aid workers have described bottlenecks for shipments at border crossings caused by lengthy inspections of trucks, limited operating hours and protests by Israelis. Israeli officials deny that they are hampering the flow of aid, blaming the United Nations for backlogs.
“There is not yet an established process and architecture for aid delivery in Gaza,” said Gen. Joseph L. Votel, former commander of U.S. Central Command.
“This is the responsibility of the international aid community and the IDF,” he said, referring to the Israel Defense Forces. “This still is very much a combat zone.”
The seat belt sign came on moments after the plane started shaking, but, for some, it was too late.
“Whoever wasn’t buckled down, they were just launched into the air within the cabin,” said Dzafran Azmir, who was among the 211 passengers on board the London-to-Singapore flight that encountered deadly turbulence Tuesday. “Within an instant, they hit the ceiling of the cabin and dropped right back onto the floor.”
The plane, a Singapore Airlines Boeing 777-300 ER, had taken off from London’s Heathrow Airport on Monday night, about 10 hours earlier. It was about three-quarters full. Many of the travelers were Singaporeans returning home. Some were students studying in England. Others were families and some who had planned a “holiday of a lifetime” to farflung destinations like Australia.
The bulk of the 13-hour journey of flight SQ321 was over, and many passengers had finished their last meal onboard, a breakfast that these days has been a choice between an omelet with cream cheese or stir-fried Asian noodles, both served with a side of fresh fruit. By this time, the plane had reached the Bay of Bengal, which sits between the Indian subcontinent and the Malay Peninsula in Southeast Asia. Some pilots consider the region “notorious” this time of the year because its monsoon rains can cause turbulence.
But commercial pilots know how to prepare for such scenarios. They rely on weather radar and carry extra fuel so they can fly around and wait for the weather to ease, if needed. Or they follow the course charted by other planes that recently have passed through the area and have warned air traffic controllers about weather upheavals.
One scenario that is impossible to prepare for is when the skies are clear and the plane’s radar does not detect anything amiss. This phenomenon is known as clear air turbulence.
“It could be the plane just starts shaking, we turn on the seat belt sign, but, unknowingly, we fall into the clear air turbulence zone,” said Capt. Teerawat Angkasakulkiat, president of the Thai Pilots Association. “It’s totally unpredictable.”
It’s unclear what happened next with SQ321, but there had been thunderstorms near its flight path. As it was flying over Myanmar, cruising at 37,000 feet above the southern section of the country’s biggest river, the Irrawaddy, it hit what the airline later described as “sudden extreme turbulence.”
For the next 3-5 minutes, the plane shook violently, said Dzafran, 28, a university student heading home to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, who was buckled into a window seat in row 52.
“Then it built up, like a feeling of going up a roller coaster, up the crest, and suddenly dropping very dramatically,” he recalled.
His bag, stored under the seat in front of him, flew across the plane, and his phone was flung across the aisle. The woman sitting in the row in front of Dzafran hit her head so hard on
the plastic seat belt indicator sign above her that it broke. Oxygen masks dropped down from the overhead panel. The person behind him hit a seat. Dzafran was unharmed, but the other two passengers had bloody gashes on their heads.
Elsewhere on the plane, people started crying and screaming out in pain. The whiplash was so furious that one passenger said that it appeared as if those who had been walking around on the plane were doing somersaults. Dozens of people, including some crew members, were injured.
As things settled down, it was clear that one of the worst affected passengers was a male traveler, Geoff Kitchen. A grandfather of two who ran a local theater group in the town of Thornbury in southwest England, Kitchen, 73, had planned a six-week “holiday of a lifetime” to Australia and Southeast Asia with his wife of 50 years, Linda.
Andrew Davies, who was sitting in front of Kitchen, helped carry him out of his seat and laid him on the floor, where he was given CPR for at least 20 minutes.
With the plane now in Thailand’s airspace, the pilot placed a distress call to Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, asking to make
an emergency landing. Then he made an inflight announcement about the new destination, and asked for anyone who was medically trained to help passengers with injuries. Forty-five minutes after the ordeal began, Dzafran said, the plane landed. It was 3.45 p.m. local time.
Several ambulances with flashing lights were standing by. The passengers waited patiently while nurses, emergency medical workers and doctors rushed in to treat the critically injured first. A total of 83 people were injured. Twenty of them were sent to the intensive care unit of a hospital.
Drew Kessler, the New York-based treasurer of Rotary International who was en route to Singapore for the annual Rotary International Convention, said he had broken his neck while his wife, Vicki, had broken her back.
As Dzafran prepared to disembark, the crew told passengers to avoid one of the aisles. Dzafran said he thinks he saw someone lying on the floor. Flight attendants near the business and first class zones were bleeding. Food was strewn across the galleys.
The passengers, dazed and confused, boarded a bus from the tarmac and arrived to a holding area inside the Bangkok airport. Conversations were struck up. A fellow passenger told Dzafran that someone had died on the plane and showed Dzafran an online news article. It was Kitchen. He was the only fatality — one of the few ever blamed on turbulence — and the cause of death hasn’t been released yet.
Singapore Airlines has apologized for the episode, and its investigators have arrived in Bangkok to try to understand what happened.
Dzafran was among the 143 passengers who emerged unscathed. So was his seatmate, who he said also had her seat belt on.
When OpenAI introduced its virtual assistant, Sky, last week, many gasped. It sounded just like Scarlett Johansson, who had famously played an artificial intelligence voice assistant in the movie “Her.”
On the surface, the choice made sense: last year, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, had named it his favorite science fiction movie, even posting the single word “her” around the assistant’s debut.
OpenAI approached Johansson to be the voice for its virtual assistant, and she turned it down. The company approached her again two days before the launch of Sky, but this time, she said in a blistering statement, it didn’t even wait for her official “no” before releasing a voice that sounds so similar to hers that it even fooled her friends and family.
In response to Johansson’s scathing letter, OpenAI claimed that the voice was someone else and “was never intended to resemble hers,” but it took Sky down anyway.

I am someone who believes in the true upside of technology, including AI. But amid all the lofty talk about its transformational power, these companies are perpetuating an information grab, a money grab and a “break the rules and see what we can get away with” mentality that’s worked very well for them for the past few decades.
Altman, it seems, liked Johansson’s voice, so the company
made a simulacrum of it. Why not?

Según González Colón, “parte de lo que ha obstaculizado la reconstrucción de las escuelas es el hecho de que, el 42 por ciento de las mismas son propiedad de la Autoridad de Edificios Públicos. Se identificarán los mecanismos legales para transferir al Departamento la titularidad de las escuelas y agilizar los procesos de reconstrucción y mejoras. Además, la oficina para el mejoramiento de las escuelas públicas (OMEP) se convertirá en la nueva Oficina de Infraestructura con un Jefe de Infraestructura del Departamento, directamente encargado de supervisar todos los esfuerzos de
reconstrucción”, dijo González Colón en declaraciones escritas.
Sobre reforzar el dominio del inglés, “se hará obligatorio la implementación del Programa de Inmersión Dual 80/20; que comienza en kínder con una experiencia de enseñanza 80 por ciento en español y 20 por ciento en inglés y, mientras los estudiantes avanzan de grado, el porcentaje de español se disminuye por 10 por ciento y el inglés aumenta un 10 por ciento hasta lograr un balance de 50/50 cuando los estudiantes avancen al tercer grado”.

Over the course of his reporting career, Sebastian Junger has had several close calls with death. A bullet whizzed past his face in Afghanistan; another time, a bomb exploded in his Humvee. Even when he wasn’t covering war, death was a theme in his work. Junger’s most famous book, “The Perfect Storm,” is about extreme weather, but it’s also about a group of men who never came home.
In the introduction to his memoir, “In My Time of Dying,” which Simon & Schuster published Tuesday, he describes his own near-drowning while surfing — the shock of being shoved underwater as if by an invisible hand, the flashbulb memory of dirty dishes in his sink, the way the shadow of death suddenly eclipsed an ordinary day.
“I was young,” Junger writes, “and had no idea the world killed people so casually.”
On June 16, 2020, Junger found himself face-to-face with mortality in a way he’d never been. One minute he was enjoying quiet time with his wife at a remote cabin on Cape Cod in Massachusetts; the next, he was in excruciating pain from a ruptured aneurysm. Hours later, as a doctor inserted a large-gauge transfusion line into his jugular vein, Junger sensed his father’s presence in the room.
His father had been dead for eight years — and he’d been a scientist and a rationalist — but there he was, trying to comfort his son. It didn’t work.
Junger writes, “I became aware of a dark pit below me and to my left.” It was “the purest black and so infinitely deep that it had no real depth at all.” He was horrified, knowing that “if I went into that hole I was never coming back.”
Junger survived. Later, he had questions — lots of them. His memoir braids a journalist’s best efforts at answers with a sexagenarian’s complicated acceptance of the inevitable.
Last month, Junger, 62, visited the Book Review to talk about his medical ordeal and its aftermath, including his research into neardeath experiences and the uncertainty he has learned to live with, if not embrace. This conversation has been edited for length and clarity.
Q: How did you arrive at such a personal subject?
A: I came out of the hospital kind of broken. My body healed quickly, but I
wound up with psychological issues that are apparently very common for someone who almost died. I couldn’t be alone; I couldn’t go on a walk in the woods. Everything was evaluated in terms of how long it would take me to get to the ER — like if I have an aneurysm now, I’m going to die.
I started writing things down in a notebook because that’s just what I do with experiences and observations. I went to a therapist for a while because after I finished being super anxious, I got incredibly depressed. I recognized this sequence from combat trauma, except it was way worse.
You write a book because something comes alive in you while you do it and that’s your obsession for a while. It took a good two years for that point to come.
Q: How would you describe your relationship with spirituality and religion?
A: I was raised to be skeptical of organized religion. So I just cruised through life without any particular thought of spirituality — and no particular need for it. I didn’t have a child, thank God, who died of cancer; nothing happened to me that was so unbearable that I had a need to reach out to a higher power. I was blessed. I’ve had a lucky life. Not easy, but lucky.
Q: So, what did you feel while you were in the emergency room?
A: There was my father, inexplicably. He was communicating — not like you are, with language, but there was communication. He was like, “It’s OK. You don’t have to fight it. You can come with me.” I was puzzled: “What are you doing here? I’m just here for belly pain.” I was like, “Go with you? You’re dead! I want nothing to do with you!”
The pit was this infinite dark emptiness that opened up underneath me. I was like, “What is that?” I was getting pulled into this thing. That’s when I started getting scared. I said to the doctor, “You have to hurry, I’m going. Right now. You’re losing me.”
The nurse said, “Keep your eyes open so we know you’re still with us,” and it dawned on me: I may not make it out. They might not have an answer to this. It was a terrible feeling.
The next day in the ICU, the nurse said, “You almost died last night.” Then I remembered my father. Of course, as a journalist, I’m doubting myself: Are you sure you’re not cooking this thing up?
But my wife said, “The first thing you told me when I walked in was, I saw my
anything’s possible because the universe happened. If there’s ever an example of “anything can happen,” it’s the universe popping into existence from nothing.
I researched the science enough to understand legitimate explanations for neurological phenomena, and it left me with this question: But why all the same vision?
Q: You write, “Finding yourself alive after almost dying is not, as it turns out, the kind of party one might expect. You realize that you weren’t returned to life, you were just introduced to death.” Tell me more.
A: Getting back to normal life meant learning how to forget that we’re all going to die and could die at any moment. That’s what normal life requires.
Two nights before I went to the hospital, I dreamed that I had died and was looking down on my grieving family. Because I had that experience, which I still can’t explain, it occurred to me that maybe I had died and the dream was me experiencing a post-death reality and that I was a ghost. I went into this very weird existential Escher drawing. Am I here, or not? At one point, I said to my wife, “How do I know I didn’t die?”
She said, “You’re here, right in front of me. You survived.”
I thought, “That’s exactly what a hallucination would say.”
Returning to normal meant stopping thinking like that.
Q: What do you hope readers will take away from the book?

Q: How did the experience change the way you think?
A: It never crossed my mind to start believing in God. But what did happen was I was like, maybe we don’t understand the universe on a fundamental level. Maybe we just don’t understand that this world we experience is just one reality and that there’s some reality we can’t understand that’s engaged when we die. All this stuff happens — ghosts and telepathy and the dead appearing in the rooms of the dying — that’s consistent in every culture in the world.
Maybe we just keep bumping into this thing that we’ll never understand because we’re basically a dog watching a television. Maybe anything’s possible; and clearly
A: We’re all in an emotionally vulnerable place; it’s just part of being in a modern society with all its wonderful benefits. Every once in a while I write something that allows people to navigate a little bit better. Maybe this book will bring some comfort.

ore than 60 years after Edward Dwight was chosen to be the first Black astronaut, only to see his place in the history of space exploration taken and deferred by the specter of racism and politics, he went to space last Sunday morning.
After landing, at the end of a flight that lasted 9 minutes and 53 seconds, Dwight stood on the steps outside the door of the crew capsule, raised his arms in the air and said, “Long time coming.”
Minutes later, standing outside the capsule, he said that the flight had been “lifechanging.” He admitted that he had been saying, earlier in the day, that he didn’t need the flight in his life. “But I lied,” he said.

Dwight, 90, was one of six people on board the Blue Origin spaceflight of the New Shepard rocket that launched Sunday morning from a private launch site near Van Horn, Texas. The flight made him the oldest person to ever go to space; he surpassed actor William Shatner.
After Dwight, who is now a sculptor, was selected for the Blue Origin flight, he told The New York Times that finally making it to space was not justice, but something that should have happened at some point.
“My whole life has been about getting things done,” Dwight said. “This is the culmination.”
The idea of sending Dwight to space gained support in 1961, amid a White House campaign to diversify the country’s space program. Dwight, a charismatic and handsome pilot, was then selected for the astronaut training program. He had the support of President John F. Kennedy and was championed by the Black press, but numerous obstacles blocked him from reaching space.
Chuck Yeager, who ran the Aerospace Research Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base in California, considered Dwight an average pilot who had been selected to be part of the program for political reasons. Dwight has said that racism could have been the reason that Yeager discriminated against him and wanted him removed. Yeager graduated Dwight from the program, but he was not selected to be an astronaut.
After Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, support for Dwight’s role in the space program seemed to fade away and, in 1966, he left the
Air Force.
Dwight went on to become a successful restaurateur, a real estate developer and a celebrated artist, whose specialty is sculpting prominent Black-history figures.
It would not be until 1983 that the United States would send a Black astronaut to space, Lt. Col. Guion S. Bluford Jr.
After all those years, Dwight finally made it to space Sunday while traveling aboard the New Shepard rocket.
It was the seventh human flight for Blue Origin, the space company founded by Jeff Bezos. The other passengers were Mason Angel, the founder of Industrious Ventures, a venture capital fund; Sylvain Chiron, founder of the Brasserie du Mont-Blanc, a craft brewery in France; Kenneth L. Hess, a software engineer and entrepreneur; Gopi Thotakura, a pilot; and Carol Schaller, a retired certified public accountant who was told she would go blind in 2017 and began traveling extensively to places including the South Pole and the Mount Everest base camp.
The rocket took off at 9:35 a.m. Central time and landed back on Earth within 10 minutes. The capsule carrying the human passengers landed separately shortly after, at 9:45 a.m. Only two of its three parachutes deployed, but this did not cause any serious problems for the landing.
The capsule door opened around 10 a.m. Dwight stood outside and said that he was “ecstatic.”
Dwight said, “Everybody needs to do this.”

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto had scaled the mountain often in Japan, but reaching 100 pitches this past Monday for the first time in MLB signaled another step forward.
Kevin Newman of the Arizona Diamondbacks bashed that 100th pitch, a slider, up the middle for a run-scoring single to end Yamamoto’s outing. It was not a picture-perfect ending to the feat, but it was also not enough to spoil the night, a 6-4 Dodgers victory at home.
The performance — two runs, eight strikeouts and one walk in 6 1/3 innings — represented what has become his new normal. After a disastrous debut in Seoul, South Korea, in which he allowed five runs in one inning, and an uneasy first few starts on U.S. soil, Yamamoto has reset expectations.
Manager Dave Roberts noticed it a few starts back. The Dodgers have wanted as little to change as possible for Yamamoto in his first season across the Pacific, from his oncea-week pitching schedule to attack plans and tweaks the club could make to his repertoire.
“There are definitely things that we feel like would help, but we feel that way about a lot of our guys,” Andrew Friedman, the team’s president of baseball operations, said of Yamamoto this month. “Other guys, we’re quicker to introduce it. With him, we’re just a little bit slower.”
They “didn’t even try to guess” how long it would take for the lightbulb to go off. Then Yamamoto got battered in Seoul, felt growing pains over the next few starts and got fed up.

“I think he just got tired of being mediocre,” Roberts said.
Yamamoto’s earned run average in nine starts since returning from Seoul is 2.38 (and 3.17 overall). He appears to have corrected the mechanical issue that threw his command out of whack this spring. As much as he still appears to be learning how to attack major league lineups and optimize his pitch mix, he is finding success. He has impressed even the organization that went out and committed $375 million (including posting fees) to add him to its roster this winter.
Still, the Dodgers are quick to remember that Yamamoto is 25, 2 months older than Gavin Stone, 8 months older than Bobby Miller and 15 months older than Emmet Sheehan. And yet he has performed.
“It’s been fascinating to watch him kind of handle all the extra pressure and everything that comes with it,” assistant pitching coach Connor McGuiness said recently. “To go out and do what he’s done — I think this is only the beginning of it, too. I think
he’s going to keep getting better and better.”
Part of that has come with starting to tweak those dials a little. He has gradually reintegrated his sinker as a regular part of his arsenal, giving a slightly different look and shape from the four-seam fastball that has gotten crushed at points in Yamamoto’s first month and a half. He reintroduced that slider he occasionally threw in Japan, giving himself another weapon to throw against righthanded hitters.
He threw 11 sinkers and 10 sliders out of his 100 pitches Monday; the changes are not a reinvention but a diversification and a testament to Yamamoto’s ability to make even the bigger MLB baseball bend to his will.
That array of options made what is typically a challenge for a first-year player — facing an opposing team for a second time, now that it has gotten a look at the pitch mix — into “a little bit of an advantage for me,” Yamamoto said through an interpreter, Yoshihiro Sonoda.
He pitched Monday as if it was indeed an advantage, with the Diamondbacks pushing across a third-inning run on a two-out Joc Pederson single but struggling to gather much else in terms of momentum as the Dodgers took a five-run lead.
Monday was hardly Yamamoto’s most
dominant performance this season. It was a brilliant one nonetheless, and it left him with a 5-1 record.
Growth on the mound has come from comfort in his new environment. He has delighted in demonstrating parts of his culture. In Minnesota, he gave Shohei Ohtani and Roberts bento boxes from a local restaurant. After a recent trip, players returned to the home clubhouse at Dodger Stadium to find a collection of Japanese snacks awaiting them in the center of the room. In turn, those around him have noted the progress of Yamamoto’s English.
Something the Dodgers and others across the sport had noticed early was an ability to adapt, evolve and use his variety of pitches to find a way to make it work.
“He was a different pitcher early on in his career in Japan and then evolved into a different one,” Friedman said. “The way his mind thinks about pitching, his ability to manipulate the ball, we were counting on that.”
Through 10 starts, Yamamoto has shown that. He has also shown he can weather the weight of expectations that have accompanied his contract. Huge 12-year contracts cannot be deemed an out-and-out win just a few months into Year 1. But the Dodgers have little reason to feel anything but encouraged with their young star.
“It feels like every time he goes out, everyone expects him to throw a completegame shutout,” Dodgers’ first baseman Freddie Freeman said. “That’s a lot on him. So for him to go out there and do what he’s been doing these first two months, I think it’s special.”
