judge on Tuesday ruled against a request for a change of venue for suspended Ponce Mayor Luis Manuel Irizarry Pabón, who is accused of violating government ethics laws.

Judge Rubén Serrano Santiago of the Ponce District Court turned down the request made by Irizarry’s lawyer José Andrew Fuentes.

Fuentes also requested a reasoned brief from the court, so he has the possibility of requesting reconsideration or going to the Court of Appeals.

Serrano Santiago set a hearing on the status of the video conference proceedings for Feb. 1 at 1:30 p.m. A date will then be set for the start of the preview.

Irizarry Pabón faces charges of violation of government ethics law and unjustified enrichment.

Police suspend Pink Alert following appearance of woman

P

olice Commissioner Antonio López Figueroa deactivated the Pink Alert on Tuesday after the safe and sound appearance at the Toa Alta Barracks of Diana Michelle Villanueva Bonilla, 25, who had been reported missing or kidnapped in the Dorado area.

López Figueroa thanked citizens for their cooperation in finding the whereabouts of Villanueva Bonilla, who had last been seen on Jan. 19 leaving her home in the Guarido sector of Dorado’s Espinosa neighborhood.

Her family had reported her disappearance to the authorities on Monday, and agents immediately began the investigation and search.

Not a substitute for the investigation already initiated by the police, the Pink Alert is just one additional tool in the search for a woman to identify any additional information that may support the work initiated by the police.

Elections commission dismisses complaints against ‘water’ candidates

he State Elections Commission (SEC) has dismissed complaints filed by former Popular Democratic Party Sen. Eudaldo Báez Galib and by pro-statehood lawyer Gregorio Igartúa that had asked the entity to take action against the so-called political “water candidates.”

Igartúa provided the information to the STAR Tuesday.

“They dismissed them because they were not filed correctly,” Igartúa told the STAR. When the Puerto Rican Independence Party and the Citizen Victory Movement (MVC by its

Spanish initials) decided to join in a partnership for this year’s election, each party had a candidate for a position but in reality was not aspiring to run for it and instead is supporting the other party’s candidate. The concept gained notoriety when Javier Córdoba Iturregui, a professor, announced he would be the gubernatorial candidate for the MVC even though the party was supporting the candidacy of Juan Dalmau Ramírez, the gubernatorial candidate for the Puerto Rican Independence Party.

Báez Galib wrote to the SEC informing them that water candidates violate election laws.

for her daughter. At that time, Rivera Ramírez publicly said that, if her mother prevailed, she would keep the elective position. However, former Rep. Carlos Calcador Berríos challenged the matter in court.

The Supreme Court ruled that candidates have to truly aspire to assume the position they are running for.

Báez Galib alleged that the water candidates are not interested in the position to which they aspire but rather transfer their interest to a rival.

Igartúa also filed a complaint on Jan. 16 stating that “this is not a mixed vote but a conspiracy to exchange votes between two political parties.”

Carvin School could shut down in May unless it gets funding

nless it gets a much needed injection of funds in March, Carvin School, one of the few English-immersive educational institutions in Carolina, could be forced to close its doors for good in May, a victim of the decline in population, the COVID-19 pandemic and the increase in the cost of living.

Emma Sulsona, president of the Private Education Association, lamented the school’s closing, noting that private schools in Puerto Rico have had to work to survive despite the population decline, the pandemic and natural disasters without government financial support.

“This is very lamentable,” she said. “Private schools have had to work during the crisis without government help.”

In a letter to students this week, Carvin School administrator Myriam de los Santos said the school, which was founded in 1970, had to deal with situations outside of its control such as the pandemic, population migration, increasing costs and natural disasters.

“At this critical time, we are waiting for essential funds, programmed for March,” she said. “However, if these funds do not materialize, we will be forced to consider the closing of our institution.”

De los Santos said the school will continue to operate normally until May of this year, and informed parents that

students’ academic files were available.

Carvin School is one of the few schools in Carolina that teaches all classes in English, allowing students to become fluent in the language. The school teaches English and Spanish as first languages.

Last year, most private schools, which depend on registration costs for survival, had to increase the monthly fees or cut expenditures to be able to survive increased costs, such as the hike in the minimum wage.

Sulsona said the Association advises school administrators to avoid large and costly construction projects, to be careful with their expenditures and to be proactive in their programs to avoid situations that will force schools to shut down.

PRMA endorses González Ascar’s candidacy for PREPA board

Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) governing board.

“We are supporting González as a great candidate to address and defend matters of public interest for consumers on the Board,” PRMA President Eric Santiago Justiniano said. “His career, his training, and his avant-garde ideas are key to driving true change.”

González Ascar, an entrepreneur, has 22 years of experience. He currently works in the private sector where he advises on improving the delivery of various services to citizens and developing digital solutions.

He has experience in the public sector, where he worked to advance efficiency and provided direct solutions such as the

CESCO Digital application and the opening of the Digital Cadastre, as well as automated service systems, including the Criminal Record Certificate and the Karibe Property Registry system.

The candidate also has dedicated special attention to achieving greater accessibility and transparency to electrical breakdown data and improving the quality of electrical service available on the island.

PRMA Executive Vice President Yandia Pérez emphasized that “González’s commitment to developing initiatives that help provide information and greater agility in government efforts is aligned with the Association’s commitment to supporting transparency in government processes.”

“Being the only candidate who has submitted a candidacy, we hope that the process will be carried out with the rigor it deserves and that Giancarlo will be confirmed as the consumer representative on the PREPA Board,” she added.

If elected, González Ascar will replace current consumer representative Tomás Torres Placa, who is leaving the position in March.

Firefighters battle blazes in several towns as stable weather elevates fire risk

he stable weather conditions expected in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands has brought forest fires, which firefighters were busy fighting in various towns on the island Tuesday.

Forest firefighters on Tuesday afternoon responded to fires reported in the Rexmanor urbanization in Guayama, in Ponce near the Portuguese Dam, in the Junco neighborhood in Peñuelas, Ceiba Sur neighborhood in Juncos, Buena Vista neighborhood in Humacao, and in the Aguilita sector of Juana Díaz.

San Germán renames theater in honor of singer Luz Celenia Tirado

eeping in mind the great legacy left by the immortal Luz Celenia Tirado, better known in the local and international musical field as “La Dama de la Trova,” San Germán Mayor Virgilio Olivera Olivera announced Tuesday that “our iconic Teatro Sol will be known, from now on, as Teatro Sol Luz Celenia Tirado.”

“Honor to whom honor is due,” the mayor said. “Officially, and full of joy, we announce to

you that our historic municipal theater will be renamed the Sol Luz Celenia Tirado Theater.”

“Soon we will be giving life to a public activity, in which we will highlight the life and undeniable legacy of the so-called ‘Lady of the Trova,’” Olivera added. “This is our posthumous tribute to this beloved and distinguished daughter of San Juan.”

Tirado, meanwhile, served as director of the Municipality of San Germán’s Department of Cultural Relations in 1972. Later, she served for 19 years as director of the Mayagüez Trou-

badour Children’s School.

Tirado died on the morning of May 30, 2022, at the age of 93.

“Although she was born in the beloved sister town of Guánica, Luz Celenia always felt a very deep love for our City of San Germán,” the mayor said. “She proclaimed herself a pure Sangerma. … The producers always presented her as ‘La Dama de la Trova.’ … She took her art to Hispanic theaters in New York City, among many other places, where standing ovations were the order of the day.”

“The peasant song was always paramount in her extensive repertoire,” Olivera noted.

“With a clear, melodious and fine-tuned voice, Luz Celenia Tirado also stood out for being an excellent improviser. In addition, as the creator of beautiful boleros and ‘criollo waltzes,’ with Odilio González (“El Jibarito de Lares”) as the most faithful interpreter of them.”

The San Germán Municipal Legislature, meanwhile, unanimously approved the name of Teatro Sol Luz Celenia Tirado under Ordinance No. 1 (2022-2023 series).

Last known remains of a Green River Killer victim are identified

nvestigators have identified the last known remains linked to the Green River Killer, one of the most prolific serial killers in U.S. history, concluding a decadeslong effort to identify each of the 49 women and girls he was convicted of killing.

The remains were named Bones 20 when they were found in 2003 because investigators were unable to confirm their identity. DNA testing recently helped investigators confirm that they belonged to Tammie Liles, who was 16 when she disappeared from Seattle in 1983 and was identified as a victim in 1988 after a separate series of remains was traced to her, the King County Sheriff’s Office said Monday.

Now, all 49 victims have been found and identified, said Sgt. Eric White, the Sheriff’s Office spokesperson.

Gary Ridgway, who was known as the Green River Killer, terrorized King County through the 1980s and ’90s. Some of the victims’ bodies were dumped in the river south of Seattle that lends the case its name.

Ridgway had been a suspect in the murders since the early 1980s. But when investigators confronted him in 1984, he denied any knowledge of the killings and passed a polygraph test. He was arrested in 2001 for the homicides

after new DNA technology allowed the authorities to gather enough evidence to tie him to the crimes.

In 2003, he was sentenced to life in prison for killing 48 people. In 2011, he pleaded guilty to his 49th murder. So far, he has confessed to 71 murders, and some investigators believe he killed more people.

Ridgway, 74, is being held without parole at Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla.

He led investigators to Liles’ remains in 2003 near KentDes Moines Road in the Seattle area, where investigators found several bones and some teeth but no skull or major bones. They took a DNA sample and uploaded it to a national law enforcement database of missing people and unidentified remains, but were unable to find a match, labeling her as Bones 20.

Liles was originally identified as a victim in 1988 based on a separate, incomplete set of remains found near a golf course near Tigard, Oregon, in 1985, the Sheriff’s Office said.

At the time, her brother, Jason Liles, told the Seattle PostIntelligencer that his family had buried her in a baby casket because not all the parts of her body could be found.

“I was very elated that in this case, which has taken over 40 years, we were able to put a name to these bones,” White said, adding that he was relieved officials were able to give

the victim’s family members “some closure” from their loss.

“It’s not a good thing to lose a child no matter what age,” he said. “I would have to assume that it was a traumatic experience to hear the words of the detectives.”

The Sheriff’s Office contracted Othram, a laboratory in Texas that specializes in DNA forensics, to help identify Bones 20. Othram built a DNA profile from the remains and used the profile to find DNA matches with distant relatives in a database, said David Mittelman, the CEO and founder of Othram.

Othram researchers found a common ancestor for the distant relatives, then built a family tree down from that ancestor to find descendants who could be the unidentified person, Mittelman said.

The search led to the family of someone who had already been identified as a victim: Liles.

“Once we saw the connection to the family, we alerted law enforcement,” Mittelman said.

Before Liles, the most recent remains tied to the Green River Killer to be identified were those of Lori Anne Razpotnik.

Her remains had been known as Bones 17 for nearly 40 years.

Liles’ family could not be immediately reached late Monday.

Supreme Court backs Biden in dispute with Texas over border barrier

T

he Supreme Court sided with the Biden administration earlier this week, allowing federal officials to cut or remove parts of a concertina-wire barrier along the Mexican border that Texas erected to keep migrants from crossing into the state.

The ruling, by a 5-4 vote, was a victory for the administration in the increasingly bitter dispute between the White House and Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas, an outspoken critic of President Joe Biden’s border policy who has shipped busloads of migrants to northern cities.

Since 2021, Abbott, a third-term Republican, has mounted a multibillion-dollar campaign to impose stringent measures at the border to deter migrants. Those include erecting concertina wire along the banks of the Rio Grande, installing a barrier of buoys in the river and enacting a sweeping law that allows state and local law enforcement to arrest migrants crossing from Mexico.

In lifting an appeals court ruling that had generally prohibited the administration from removing the wire while the court considers the case, the justices gave no reasons, which is typical when they act on emergency applications.

Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Amy Coney Barrett joined the court’s three liberal members to form a majority.

A spokesperson for Abbott, Andrew Mahaleris, defended Texas’ practices and vowed to keep pressing its case.

“The absence of razor wire and other deterrence strategies encourages migrants to make unsafe and illegal crossings between ports of entry,” he said in a statement. He added: “This case is ongoing, and Gov. Abbott will continue fighting to defend Texas’ property and its constitutional authority to secure the border.”

Angelo Fernández Hernández, a White House spokesperson, embraced the decision and called on Congress to come to a bipartisan deal on changes to the immigration system. “Texas’ political stunts, like placing razor wire near the border, simply make it harder and more dangerous for frontline personnel to do their jobs,” he said in a statement.

“Ultimately, we need adequate resources and policy changes to address our broken immigration system.”

A three-judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals last month limited the ability of federal Border Patrol agents to cut the wire.

The panel prohibited agents “from damaging, destroying or otherwise interfering with Texas’ c-wire fence” while the appeal is pending, but made an exception for medical emergencies that are likely to result in “serious bodily injury or death.”

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued the administration in October, saying that Border Patrol agents had unlawfully destroyed state property and thwarted the state’s efforts to block migrants from crossing the border. According to the lawsuit, border agents cut the wire at least 20 times “to admit aliens illegally entering Texas.”

In court papers, Paxton argued that federal officials using bolt cutters and forklifts had destroyed parts of the barrier for no reason other than to allow migrants to enter.

In the Biden administration’s emergency application, Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar rejected the contention that federal officials had done anything improper. “Border Patrol agents’ exercise of discretion regarding the means of enabling the apprehension, inspection and processing of noncitizens in no way suggests that they cut wire for impermissible purposes,” she wrote.

Calling the appeals court’s injunction “manifestly wrong,” Prelogar said the barrier interfered with Border Patrol agents’ responsibilities.

“The injunction prohibits agents from passing through or moving physical obstacles erected by the state that prevent access to the very border they are charged with patrolling and the individuals they are charged with apprehending and inspecting,” she wrote. “And it removes a key form of officer discretion to prevent the development of deadly situations, including by mitigating the serious risks of drowning and death from hypothermia or heat exposure.”

The exception for medical emergencies was insufficient, Prelogar wrote. “It can take 10 to 30 minutes to cut through Texas’ dense layers of razor wire,” she wrote. “By the time a medical emergency is apparent, it may be too late to render lifesaving aid.”

The injunction was also unjustified, Prelogar wrote.

“Balanced against the impairment of federal law enforcement and risk to human life,” she wrote, “the court of appeals cited as Texas’ harm only the price of wire and the cost of closing a gap created by Border Patrol agents.”

Paxton asked the justices to strike a different balance.

“It is in the public interest to deter unlawful agency action and to respect property rights,” he wrote. “It is also in the public interest to reduce the flow of deadly fentanyl; combat human trafficking; protect Texans from unlawful trespass and violent attacks by criminal cartels; and minimize the risks to people, both U.S. citizens and migrants, of drowning while making perilous journeys to and through illegal points of entry.”

This month, federal officials said that when Border Patrol agents tried to respond to reports of a drowning in an area where the state had placed barriers, they were “physically barred” by state officials. Texas officials disputed that account.

With border deal near, parole and money take center stage in Senate talks

A

bipartisan group of senators has agreed on a compromise to crack down on the surge of migrants crossing into the United States from Mexico, including reducing the number who are allowed to live and work in the country temporarily, but a final deal depends on resolving critical funding disputes.

Much of the recent haggling over the emerging agreement — and a point of contention for its critics — has been about how to limit the number of people who are granted parole, a status that allows migrants without visas to live and work in the United States temporarily. Drawing broader support for the plan in the Senate would clear away the biggest obstacle to congressional approval of tens of billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine for its war against Russian aggression, which Republicans have said they will block absent a deal to clamp down at the border.

illegal immigration and must be tightly closed.To many Democrats, it is a crucial tool that allows the administration to treat desperate migrants humanely, which must be preserved, particularly for vulnerable populations fleeing failing states and war.

Bridging the gap will probably hinge on the two sides agreeing on how much federal money to spend to try to decrease net immigration numbers, and persuading Republicans that the deal’s measures will be effective. On Monday, Senate leaders warned that getting a final deal depended on resolving those remaining differences.

Here’s how parole works, and why it’s central to sealing any border deal in Congress.

Parole is a stopgap measure for migrants without legal status.

Parole authority, which has existed since the 1950s, allows the government to extend migrants a special status to remain in the United States for a certain period of time. It was designed to be used only in cases of humanitarian need, or if there was a public benefit to allowing a migrant into the country.

But administrations have interpreted that guidance in different ways, sometimes ushering in whole groups of migrants under the authority.

The Biden administration also paroled in roughly 1 million migrants under a number of programs geared toward helping specific vulnerable groups, such as people fleeing the war in Ukraine and the Taliban government in Afghanistan, as well as migrants from economically devastated countries such as Haiti, Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua who have sponsors already in the United States.

Republicans have sought to limit nearly all of those programs.

According to data compiled by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University, the use of parole authority to allow otherwise inadmissible migrants into the United States has also ballooned under the Biden administration, although the percentage of those admitted is roughly comparable to intake figures seen under President Barack Obama and during the early part of the Trump administration.

Republicans have railed against what they call the practice of “catch and release,” in which migrants are briefly detained upon their arrival into the United States but then quickly granted parole and released to await immigration court hearings.

Republicans and Democrats have agreed to steps they argue will result in fewer grants of parole.

The emerging Senate deal seeks to reduce parole numbers by tightening immigration enforcement and speeding up processing. It would make it harder for migrants to claim asylum, expand detention capacity in the United States and expedite the expulsion of migrants who lack lawful reasons to stay in the country.

The plan would also add staff to the Border Patrol and asylum officer corps tasked with processing migrants through the immigration intake and court systems. And it includes a failsafe mechanism that would shut down migrant intake altogether if the system became overwhelmed, a level that officials put at more than 5,000 daily encounters with people trying to cross the border. In November, daily encounters at the southwest border averaged above 8,000 per day, according to statistics published

by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and last month, encounters peaked at more than 12,000 per day, according to reports.

Proponents contend that those measures would effectively reduce the number of migrants who would need to be granted parole. But Republicans have sought a hard cap on the number of migrants who can receive parole, as well as the elimination of group-based parole. The deal does not include either.

Republicans want stricter limits on parole.

House Republicans, including Speaker Mike Johnson, have threatened to block any deal that does not eviscerate most group-based parole programs and reinstitute a policy of keeping migrants who cannot be held in detention facilities on the Mexican side of the border. In recent weeks, Republicans in both chambers have also rallied around demands for strict numerical annual caps for parole, calling that a “red line” to ensure that the president cannot abuse his parole authority.

Democrats have resisted limiting parole.

For the most part, Democrats regard parole as an important tool for managing an often-chaotic situation at the border and the limitations of U.S. detention facilities and immigration court backlogs. They also fear what might happen to vulnerable populations such as Afghans and Ukrainians if the president’s ability to offer parole to groups fleeing acute humanitarian crises were scaled back, or capped at a low threshold.

Although many Democrats have rallied around the idea of reducing the influx of migrants unlawfully trying to enter the United States, they have balked at the Republican demands to directly limit parole authority.

And some progressive Democrats say any deal that tries to reduce parole numbers by tightening restrictions on migrants, including shutting down intake if the number of border crossings exceeds a certain level, is unacceptable.

Ex-US soldier who killed Iraqi civilian charged with attacking police on Jan. 6

A

former U.S. Army soldier who was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the killing of an Iraqi civilian in 2004 was charged earlier this week with assaulting police officers with a baton during the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol, the Justice Department announced.

The former soldier, Edward Richmond Jr., 40, of Geismar, Louisiana, who was arrested Monday in Baton Rouge, faces several federal charges, including civil disorder; entering and remaining in a restricted area with a deadly or dangerous weapon; and assaulting, resisting or impeding certain officers, prosecutors said.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Army, Bryce Dubee, confirmed that Richmond had been convicted of voluntary manslaughter in 2004, the same year he was deployed to Iraq. Richmond, who was in the Army from 2002-08, was sentenced in military court to a reduction in rank from private, forfeiture of all pay and allowances, three years’ confinement and a dishonorable discharge, Dubee said.

He was released from prison on parole in 2006 with almost a year remaining on his original sentence, according to The Associated Press.

According to The Associated Press, Richmond killed a cow herder who had been detained along with other men in an Iraqi village near Taal Al Jai that the Army raided Feb. 28, 2004. The herder, Muhamad Husain Kadir, was handcuffed when Richmond shot him in the back of the head from 6 feet away as the man stumbled, the AP reported.

In his defense, Richmond, then 20, said that although he had not seen Kadir with a weapon, he thought that Kadir had

been lunging to attack another soldier, adding that he didn’t know Kadir’s hands had been bound, according to the wire service.

In the Justice Department’s announcement Monday, prosecutors said Richmond was among a group of about 10 people who traveled from Ohio to Washington, D.C., to attend pro-Trump rallies planned for Jan. 6., when Congress was set to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election at the Capitol.

Investigators identified Richmond in several images and footage from the Capitol breach on Jan. 6, including on closed-circuit television footage and on video taken by officer body-worn cameras, according to an affidavit written by an FBI agent filed with the criminal complaint in the U.S. District Court in Washington.

Richmond is seen in images filed in the complaint wearing a black helmet, goggles, shoulder pads and a state of Louisiana flag patch attached to a camouflage-pattern vest.

Closed-circuit television footage shows him amid a crush of rioters near the tunnel at the Capitol. Body-worn camera footage from officers shows him “using a baton to strike law enforcement officers” multiple times, prosecutors said.

Richmond is scheduled to make an initial appearance at U.S. Middle District Court of Louisiana on Tuesday at 10 a.m., his lawyer, John McLindon, said. He declined to comment on the case.

Federal authorities have charged more than 1,265 people in connection with the Jan. 6 riot, including more than 440 who were charged with “assaulting or impeding” police officers, according to the Justice Department.

The department’s efforts have resulted in more than 720 convictions, with sentences ranging from mere days to more than 20 years in prison.

Macy’s rejects takeover bid, but remains ‘open to opportunities’

acy’s rejected a $5.8 billion takeover bid earlier this week that valued the struggling department store chain at roughly 20% above its closing share price on Friday, but suggested it was “open to opportunities.”

The bidders, Arkhouse Management and Brigade Capital, are seeking to acquire Macy’s stock they do not already own at $21 a share and have threatened to take the offer to shareholders.

With a potential hostile bid looming, questions are rising over how Arkhouse and Brigade could pull off a deal and whether additional suitors could appear, potentially setting off a bidding war.

In a statement released Sunday night, Macy’s board questioned whether the investment firms had the money to finance the deal, which it said “lacks compelling value.” It noted that the bid had been accompanied by a letter with “numerous” untraditional stipulations.

Macy’s also questioned the deal’s financial feasibility. It said the firms had proposed to pay 25% of the offer in equity. The rest of the funding would likely come from debt such as leveraged loans, but appetite for such deals has waned, in part because of high interest rates.

The unsolicited bid could draw others. Arkhouse’s 2021 offer for developer Columbia Property Trust led to another buyer‘s entering the picture and buying Colum-

bia in a $3.9 billion deal.

Macy’s has not reached out to prospective buyers, people familiar with the matter said. But the retailer’s chair and CEO, Jeff Gennette, said in statement, “We continue to be open to opportunities that are in the best interests of the company and all of our shareholders.”

Still, list of prospective suitors is short, given the challenges facing the retail sector amid stubborn inflation and shifts in consumer spending. The detrimental effect of piling debt on a retailer in leveraged buyouts, like those for Payless, Toys R Us and Sears, has scared many private equity firms away from making such deals.

Still, there may be some willing, particularly if attracted to Macy’s valuable real estate portfolio.

Macy’s has been under pressure to improve its business as consumers have spent less on discretionary items. Its shares have fallen about 30% over the past five years, as the company lost significant market share and was forced to close stores and lay off staff. Last week, it announced that it would cut 2,350 jobs.

Shares of Macy’s rose 2.6% on Monday, closing 3.5% higher.

As the company tries to turn around its fortunes, all eyes are on Tony Spring, who takes over as CEO next month after having led Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s muchhealthier, higher-end brand. But duplicating that success could be challenging: Macy’s shoppers are different from Bloomingdale’s customers, and it has a large and underperforming store base.

Netflix’s head of film to depart

cott Stuber, who brought Oscar-winning filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese, Spike Lee, Jane Campion and Alfonso Cuarón to Netflix and in doing so helped to usher the entertainment industry into the streaming era, is leaving as the service’s film chair, the company said earlier this week.

News of Stuber’s departure came on the eve of the Oscar nominations. During his tenure, which began in 2017, Netflix has had eight films nominated for best picture, although a win in that category has proved elusive.

“Scott has helped lead the new paradigm of how movies are made, distributed and watched,” Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said in a statement. “He attracted unbelievable creative talent to Netflix, making us a premiere film studio.”

Although Stuber’s slate of movies helped to boost Netflix’s business substantially, he often clashed with Sarandos over strategy. Stuber often tried to appease filmmakers by pushing for wider theatrical releases than Sarandos was

willing to undertake.

Still, Netflix received the most Oscar nominations of any studio in 2020, 2021 and 2022. In addition to critical hits such as Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” and Alfonso Cuarón’s “Roma,” Stuber’s tenure also produced popular hits such as “Red Notice,” “Bird Box” and “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.”

He made big bets on filmmakers he wanted to lure to the studio, spending $450 million to secure two “Knives Out” sequels from Rian Johnson and more than $160 million for Zack Snyder’s recent release “Rebel Moon.” Greta Gerwig, who directed and co-wrote the blockbuster “Barbie,” is also working with Netflix on adapting a film based on the “Chronicles of Narnia” book series.

“Maestro,” a biopic of composer Leonard Bernstein, which was written, directed and stars Bradley Cooper, is one of the Netflix films expected to pick up several Oscar nominations this year. (Netflix was to announce its fourth-quarter earnings Tuesday.)

“I think one of the fair criticisms has been we make too much and not enough is great,” he said in an interview in 2021. “I think what we want to do is refine and make a little less better and more great.”

In a statement Monday, Stuber thanked Sarandos and Reed Hastings, Netflix’s co-founder and executive chair, for “the amazing opportunity to join Netflix and create a new home for original movies.”

“I am proud of what we accomplished,” he said, “and am so grateful to all the filmmakers and talent who trusted us to help tell their stories.”

Stuber is scheduled to leave in March and will be starting his own media company. Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s chief content officer, will assume Stuber’s duties when he leaves.

Last year, she essentially became Stuber’s boss, putting a management layer between him and Sarandos.

US-listed China stocks bounce off lows on hopes of Beijing support N ew York-listed shares of Chinese companies bounced back on Tuesday after a dour start to the year, after a report of a rescue package for the slumping domestic stock market buoyed sentiment.

The Nasdaq Golden Dragon China Index - a gauge of Chinese American depositary receipts (ADRs) - jumped 5.8% after hitting its lowest level since Nov. 2021 in the previous session and much higher than the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite’s 0.3% rise.

Policymakers in Beijing are looking to mobilize about 2 trillion yuan ($278.53 billion) in an effort to stabilize a bruised stock market, Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday citing people familiar with the matter.

ADRs of heavyweights JD.com, Baidu, NetEase and PDD HOldings rose between 6% and 7.5%.

Chinese domestic stocks rose from multi-year lows earlier in the day on hopes of the rescue package and Beijing’s pledge to stabilize market confidence.

“Investors are cheering the stimulus plan... (however) today’s news may not be enough to turn the tide for Chinese equities,” said Charalampos Pissouros, analyst at Cyprus-based forex brokerage XM. The bluechip CSI300 Index is still near five-year lows.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng is hovering near 14-month lows following the country’s disappointing post-pandemic economic recovery and underwhelming stimulus measures to support the battered property sector.

The iShares MSCI China ETF added nearly 4% on Tuesday.

The $4.96 billion fund has seen about $300 million in outflows so far this month, extending losses from a record annual drop in capital flows of $848 million in 2023, according to LSEG data.

Alibaba jumped 7.6% after a report co-founder Jack Ma and Chairman Joe Tsai bought millions worth of shares in the Chinese e-commerce giant in the fourth quarter.

Hedge funds bought more U.S. stocks than they sold last week for the first time in ten weeks, adding $554 million to their portfolios, Bank of America said in a note about its clients’ flows.

The hedge funds’ net purchases occurred in a week when the S&P 500 index posted a record high close on Friday for the first time in two years, amid a rally in chipmakers and megacap technology stocks.

Still, hedge funds are net sellers of roughly $2 billion in shares on a year-to-date basis, BofA said.

Last week, hedge funds bought mainly exchange-traded funds (ETFs), adding over $200 million of those securities, and large-cap companies. Energy and healthcare were the two top sectors for hedge funds’ acquisitions last week.

Overall, BofA said it saw the biggest inflow into U.S. equities since mid-December when all of its clients, including hedge funds, institutional and retail investors, and companies, were factored in.

-The S&P 500 rose marginally on Tuesday as investors digested a mixed bag of early quarterly results and awaited a slew of additional reports from Netflix, Tesla and other companies later this week.

The S&P 500 is trading near record highs, and many investors view upcoming quarterly reports from the heavily weighted “Magnificent 7” group of megacap companies as key to whether Wall Street’s recent rally continues or loses steam.

“It’s a crescendo of reports tomorrow and Thursday, and

then next week will be even busier,” said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at B. Riley Wealth. “We’ve got a lot of things to contemplate over the course of this week and next that will likely will end up being a market positive.”

3M tumbled more than 11% after forecasting dour annual earnings, while Johnson & Johnson dipped 1.3% after reporting quarterly results just above expectations.

D.R. Horton dropped almost 10% after the homebuilder missed estimates for first-quarter profit.

Verizon Communications rallied 5.7% after forecasting a strong annual profit and posting its highest quarterly subscriber additions in nearly two years, while Procter & Gamble gained 4.5% after it topped second-quarter profit expectations.

A hazard for visitors to Colombia: ‘Devil’s breath’

teven Valdez thought he recognized the woman in the Medellín park. Chatting, the two realized they had matched on the dating platform Tinder. They exchanged numbers and made plans.

On their date last spring, he said the woman suggested that he try a typical Colombian dish — a creamy soup called ajiaco.

She carried it from a restaurant counter to their table.

He had two spoonfuls, Valdez, 31, said. “And that’s the last thing I remember.”

Like scores of visitors to the Colombian city last year, Valdez, a travel blogger, said he was told at the hospital that he had ingested a powerful, potentially fatal cocktail of sedatives, including a drug called scopolamine.

Scopolamine makes its victims black out, and experts say it can also make them unusually open to suggestion — including agreeing to hand over a wallet or reveal passwords.

American officials are so concerned that they issued a security alert this month about the sedatives and a wave of violent crime targeting visitors to Colombia, especially in the increasingly popular tourist destination of Medellín, a city of 2.6 million in a valley of the Andes Mountains.

The U.S. Embassy, in a previous security alert, describes scopolamine as an “odorless, tasteless, memory-blocking substance used to incapacitate and rob unwary victims” and warns of using dating applications in Colombia or visiting nightclubs and bars.

Colombian officials say many of the incidents involve the city’s sex industry.

“Unfortunately, due to word-of-mouth, people are identifying that in Medellín, there are pretty girls, and you can party really hard at a very low cost,” said Carlos Calle, who monitors the tourism industry for the city government. “Criminals are taking advantage of that.”

Since the pandemic, Medellín has also drawn thousands of digital nomads seeking cultural immersion and a cheap Airbnb, and investigators and lawyers say that they, too, are being targeted on mainstream dating platforms like Tinder.

Tinder did not respond to a request for comment.

While deaths are relatively rare, authorities in Medellín said the number of robberies involving scopolamine and other sedatives has risen sharply in recent years, though the exact number is unknown, since many victims do not go to the police.

“There are people who feel too embarrassed because if they file a report, people will know what they were doing,” said Manuel Villa Mejía, the city’s security secretary.

Jorge Wilson Vélez, a forensic criminologist who works with victims and their families, said there were likely hundreds of victims last year.

Perpetrators see the robberies as a tax on tourists whom they view as wealthy and in Colombia to prey on women, Vélez said. The intent is not to kill anybody, he added. “They call it ‘giving the guys something to sleep.’”

Last year, Medellín saw 1.4 million foreign visitors, nearly 40% of whom were American, according to city data.

Crimes against American visitors have stirred fears in the expat community. An English-language Facebook group, Colombia Scopolamine Victims & Alerts, has about 3,800 members.

Americans are being hit, Vélez said, because they’re going online “looking for company, a relationship,” and especially when they go on dates alone.

Scopolamine, also known as “devil’s breath,” has been reported elsewhere in Latin America and beyond, with cases popping up from London to Bangkok.

But the drug’s rise in Colombia and the embassy’s warning to Americans come as a particular blow to a country trying hard to change its image.

Medellín, in particular, has struggled to shed associations with drugs, violence and Pablo Escobar. The city has undergone a major transformation since the 1990s, boasting sleek museums, cafes on tree-lined streets, and the country’s only metro system. While some criminal gangs remain, the city’s homicide rates have plunged.

Crimes targeting tourists may tarnish that rosy picture — but so, too, do the tourists themselves, according to officials and lawyers who represent men targeted by thieves, who say some are treating Medellín like a lurid playground.

“There’s this weird mystique. You come to Medellín, and the normal rules don’t apply,” said Alan Gongora, an American lawyer in Medellín. “Like, anything is possible.”

Some crime victims said they were just looking for a date.

During the pandemic, Valdez left Los Angeles, where he worked in television production, to travel and work on his blogs, including one called We Like Colombia. He was in Medellín last May, working and taking bachata lessons, he said, when he opened Tinder to find a dance partner.

After his date with a woman who called herself Automatizando su Hogar y Negocio Luisa, he said he woke up in his Airbnb, alone and unable to stand up. His right leg felt broken.

likely because he had resisted being robbed, Valdez said. Hospital blood tests revealed the presence of scopolamine and another drug, clonazepam, a depressant.

He lost his phones, laptop, wallet and about $7,000, he said.

But he felt lucky to be alive.

Valdez reported the attack, and his date and several others were arrested after trying to use his bank cards to purchase appliances at a store, according to the police.

He tries to keep what happened in perspective. “I’ve been to Colombia, like, eight times now since the pandemic,” said Valdez, who now lives in Puerto Rico. “I’ve seen organized crime is rampant because prices are going so high over there.

You know, the regular citizens can’t afford it.”

Criminal groups that lure victims through dating platforms are typically small, unaffiliated crews from poor neighborhoods, investigators in Medellín said.

One 42-year-old man from New York recalled being drugged by a Tinder date who served him a rum and coke that he said knocked him out for 24 hours.

She stole his electronic devices, silver jewelry, a bank card and cash. “I thought I had lost everything,” said the man, who asked to go by his initials, R.J., to protect future job prospects.

But his passport and IDs were right where he had hidden them.

A police report viewed by The New York Times corroborated details of the crime.

Leaving a passport, investigators said, is a signature of these crimes — meant to encourage victims to leave without reporting the robbery or pressing charges.

Some thieves can be sophisticated.

In December, a young German scientist touring Latin America and posting videos under the name Dr. Travel said he was robbed in Medellín by a woman he was “chatting with” after joining her and her friend for a meal.

He drank a pink soda, he said in a video, and later awoke to find his wallet and phone gone. His phone’s tracking function was deactivated, his Apple ID password changed and his bank account drained. Holdings in several cryptocurrency exchanges were sold, the funds moved to other crypto wallets.

He lost more than $16,000, he said. Attempts to reach the man were unsuccessful.

Scopolamine has long been used to treat motion sickness and nausea, but it became popular in larger doses around three decades ago as a recreational drug and to commit crimes, said Guillermo Castaño, a senior investigator for Colombia’s science ministry.

Around 10 years ago, criminals in Colombia started using it to target tourists, Castaño said, often mixing it with benzodiazepines, depressants that typically treat insomnia and anxiety, to further incapacitate victims.

In a widely publicized case, Paul Nguyen, a 27-year-old from California, was fatally drugged by a Tinder date in Medellín in late 2022, his body found near a dumpster. An autopsy determined he had been drugged with clonazepam, which, combined with alcohol, had caused his death.

Nguyen’s mother, Kimberly Dao, said the family had to hire Vélez, the investigator, to push the police to pursue the case.

For Dao, the U.S. Embassy alert about online dating in Colombia is a sign the issue is being taken seriously — though she wished it had come sooner.

If it had, she said, “I would beg him, I would not let him go.”

Russian missiles hit Ukrainian cities amid fears over air defenses

ussia launched a combination of cruise and ballistic missiles at Ukrainian cities Tuesday in a large volley that killed at least five people and wounded another 63, including children, according to local and military authorities. The assault added to concerns about the state of Ukraine’s air defenses as Russian barrages continue on its largest cities.

Ukraine’s air force said that 41 missiles had entered the country’s airspace early Tuesday. Ukrainian authorities provide details of cruise missiles in flight, and residents can track them for about an hour as they fly from Russia. The ballistic missiles, which travel much faster, struck in Kyiv on Tuesday just as the cruise missiles arrived.

Yuriy Ihnat, an air force spokesperson, said in a telephone interview that the military had intercepted only about half of the total barrage and just five of the 24 ballistic missiles. That was a lower success rate for Ukraine than achieved against earlier bombardments, because ballistic missiles, which are harder to intercept, made up a higher proportion of Tuesday’s volley, he said.

Most of the missiles “were ballistic, and our air force can’t down them all,” Ihnat said.

In Kyiv, the capital, at least one missile appeared to detonate at ground level, residents said, although it was unclear whether it had evaded Ukraine’s air defenses or whether the warhead fell and blew up after the missile was destroyed in the air.

Concern has grown in Ukraine that air defense ammunition will run low as further military aid from the United States remains stalled in Congress. Ihnat said that the air force had not run out of ammunition in Tuesday’s assault but that Ukraine did require a regular resupply.

He also said that not all of the missiles that evaded Ukraine’s defenses had hit their targets. “Many of them just fell in the fields, as Russian missiles’ quality has decreased,” he said.

Residents of the capital awoke to an air raid alarm around 6 a.m., followed by explosions and the rattle of machine guns firing at the cruise missiles. Missiles or falling debris struck five neighborhoods in Kyiv, according to the city’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko.

Police strung red tape around strike sites, and emergency workers cleared bricks and broken glass from the streets.

In the city’s Sviatoshynsky district, an older man stood on the street, shaking and crying, after watching wounded children being evacuated from one strike site. “Their entire bodies were bandaged,” said the man, who declined to give his name. He struggled to say anything more.

Cars caught fire on a street in one district. Klitschko wrote on the Telegram social messaging app that a warhead from one intercepted missile had landed in a resident’s kitchen but did not explode.

In Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city, missiles killed two people and wounded at least 38, the mayor, Ihor Terekhov, wrote on Telegram.

Missiles hit at least four locations in the city, whose center is just 25 miles from the Russian border — the first strikes around 4 a.m. and another salvo three hours later, the head of the regional military administration, Oleh Syniehubov, said in a brief interview at the site of one of the strikes.

NATO officials in Brussels announced Tuesday that the military alliance had signed contracts worth $1.2 billion to buy 155 mm caliber artillery shells — one of the mostneeded weapons on Ukraine’s battlefields.

The estimated 220,000 shells will not be delivered for at least two years, officials said, and will be sent to member states to refill stockpiles that have been depleted by military assistance to Ukraine. It will be up to NATO states to decide whether they can spare more for Kyiv.

“Russia’s war in Ukraine has become a battle for ammunition,” said Jens Stoltenberg, the NATO secretary-general.

Officials did not say which ammunition producers — whether based in Europe, the United States or elsewhere — would manufacture the shells.

Across Ukraine on Tuesday morning, thousands of people took shelter with their children in basements or subway stations. After the explosions in Kyiv, some rushed out to check on their homes and businesses.

“We ran to try to save anything we could from our shop,” said Ina Halushko, 50, the owner of a grocery store about 100 yards from one of the sites hit in Kyiv. Its windows were shattered, she said as she pointed toward the store, but the building did not catch fire.

In Kyiv, people who had gathered near a building that was damaged by falling missile debris said they worried about the diminishing supply of antiaircraft missiles protecting the city.

“If America stops supporting us, next time you won’t see me here,” said Olesya Dubinska, who lives in a nearby building. She was watching emergency crews clean up the site with her dog, a black Doberman named Lucky.

“We understand the forces are not equal,” she said. “Our territory is far smaller than Russia. Of course we need help.”

US expands attacks on Houthis with new strikes in Yemen

he United States and Britain carried out large-scale military strikes earlier this week against eight sites in Yemen controlled by Houthi militants, according to the two countries. The strikes signaled that the Biden administration intends to wage a sustained and, at least for now, open-ended campaign against the Iran-backed group that has disrupted traffic in vital international sea lanes.

The strikes — the eighth in nearly two weeks — hit multiple targets at each site and were bigger and broader than a recent series of more limited attacks against individual Houthi missiles that U.S. officials said popped up on short notice. Those missiles were hit before they could be fired at ships in the Red Sea or the Gulf of Aden.

But the planned nighttime strikes Monday, which hit radars, as well as drone and missile sites and underground weapons storage bunkers, were smaller than the first retaliatory salvos Jan. 11. Those hit more than 60 targets at nearly 30 sites across Yemen in an expansion of the conflict in the Middle East that the Biden administration had sought to avoid.

This middle ground reflects the administration’s attempt to chip away at the Houthis’ ability to menace merchant ships and military vessels but not hit so hard as to kill large numbers of Houthi fighters and commanders, and potentially unleash even more mayhem into a region already teetering on the edge of a wider war.

“Let us reiterate our warning to Houthi leadership: We will not hesitate to defend lives and the free flow of commerce in one of the world’s most critical waterways in the face of continued threat,” the U.S. and British governments said in a statement.

Taken together, however, the U.S.-led strikes, in an operation the military calls Poseidon Archer, have so far failed to deter the Houthis from attacking shipping lanes to and from the Suez Canal that are critical for global trade. The Iran-backed group said it will keep up its attacks in what it said is a protest against Israel’s military campaign in the Gaza Strip against Hamas.

Indeed, the Houthis remained defiant Monday after the strikes by carrier-based Navy FA-18 fighter jets, Tomahawk cruise missiles and British Typhoon warplanes.

“Retaliation against American and British attacks is inevitable, and any new aggression will not go unpunished,” a Houthi military spokesperson, Yahya Sarea, said in a statement before the latest American strikes.

The Houthis claimed Monday to have attacked an American military cargo ship, Ocean Jazz, in the Gulf of Aden, but the White House and Pentagon denied such an assault had happened.

emerging strategy toward the Houthis forged in several high-level White House meetings in recent days, senior U.S. officials said.

“They have stockpiles of advanced weapons provided to them in many cases, or enabled to them in many cases, by Iran,” Finer said on ABC News’ “This Week.” “We are taking out these stockpiles so that they will not be able to conduct as many attacks over time. That will take time to play out.”

The American-led air and naval strikes began in response to more than two dozen Houthi drone and missile attacks against commercial shipping in the Red Sea since November. The administration and several allies had repeatedly warned the Houthis of serious consequences if the salvos did not stop.

But two U.S. officials cautioned a few days after the air campaign began that despite hitting more Houthi missile and drone targets with more than 150 precision-guided munitions, the strikes had damaged or destroyed only about 20% to 30% of the Houthis’ offensive capability, much of which is mounted on mobile platforms and can be readily moved or hidden.

A third senior official said Monday that figure may have crept up to 30% to 40% after at least 25 to 30 precision-guided munitions successfully hit their targets Monday.

But other U.S. intelligence officials who have been briefed on the size and scope of the Houthis’ arsenal said analysts are not sure how much weaponry the group started with.

American and other Western intelligence agencies have not spent significant time or resources in recent years collecting data on the location of Houthi air defenses, command hubs, munitions depots and storage and production facilities for drones and missiles, the officials said.

That changed quickly after the Hamas attacks in Israel on Oct. 7 and the Houthi attacks on commercial ships a month later.

U.S. analysts have been rushing to catalog more potential Houthi targets every day, the officials said. That effort yielded many of the targets hit Jan. 11 and Monday, officials said.

Many Republicans in Congress and some former senior U.S. military officials say the approach is not working.

“The key is we have to hurt the Houthis to a degree that they’ll stop,” Gen. Kenneth McKenzie Jr., a retired head of the military’s Central Command, said in an interview. “We haven’t done that yet.”

When public health loses the public

ut on your masks!”

My son and I were cycling during the pandemic when a passerby furiously screamed that in our direction. I shouted back something too long about updated recommendations on masking outdoors and was left yelling into the wind, my kid giving me the “Calm down, Mom” look.

We all had our uncalm moments during the pandemic.

What rankled me during this one was that the science was on my side. Yet here was someone in my community operating within a completely different framework.

In his new book, “Within Reason: A Liberal Public Health for an Illiberal Time,” Sandro Galea, the dean of the Boston University School of Public Health, looks to his own field to explain the animating forces behind some of those disputes.

Despite remarkable successes, Galea argues, public health succumbed to a disturbing strain of illiberalism during the pandemic. This not only worsened the impact of the pandemic, it also destabilized public health institutions in ways that will serve us poorly when the next crisis comes.

Any pandemic finger pointing has to begin with Donald Trump, whose fecklessness in the face of crisis pinballed between falsehoods and crackpot science before settling into outright denialism.

Much harder for non-Trumpers is to recognize that many on the left, including those in the progressive field of public health, reacted with ideological intransigence.

If Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida said masks off, blue states encouraged mask wearing, even while students competed in sports or sat in preschool classrooms. Last summer, Francis Collins, the former head of the National Institutes of Health, admitted that the “public health mindset” had been too narrowly focused, which he now calls a mistake. “You attach a zero value to whether this actually totally disrupts people’s lives, ruins the economy, and has many kids kept out of school in a way that they never quite recovered,” he said.

Galea’s point is not to relitigate COVID’s sore points but to ask: If Americans have come to distrust public health advice, what role may public health officials have played in fostering that distrust?

During the pandemic, states, municipalities, school districts, businesses — sometimes using guidance from public health organizations and sometimes ignoring it — often relied on what felt right as opposed to empirical data. American health experts advocated almost universal child vaccination; meanwhile, in Europe, experts cautioned against vaccinating young children, who were at low risk for serious illness, without more long-term data. “Were we pushing to vaccinate children for their sake or for ours?” Galea asks. “Were we doing it to support health or to make a political point?”

Scientists should have made more nuanced risk assessments and revisited them regularly. They should have taken into account the consequences and the disproportionate impact of strict lockdowns on lowerincome workers and at-risk youth. This zero-sum mode of thinking — neglecting to take into account one’s own biases, succumbing to groupthink, operating according to the expectations of one’s “side,” discouraging goodfaith debate — persisted even as the pandemic eased.

“We need to have the courage to act in the way that overcomes fear, building on what the data shows us,” Galea told me, “even though there are activist voices that have captured the public conversation.”

Some pandemic mistakes were inevitable, especially when data was scarce. But others betrayed an ideological intransigence. The obvious example was longterm school closures, mostly in blue states, which we now know caused significant delays in learning, especially among the most vulnerable populations with the fewest resources. In many places during the pandemic, to suggest that kids might suffer learning loss or social and emotional consequences was tantamount to wishing death upon teachers. Forbidding socializing among young children denied them the development of social skills, yet to advocate otherwise could get you kicked out of a parent group chat.

Unfortunately, this tendency to view “core issues in Manichaean terms, with certain positions seen as on the side of good and others on the side of evil, with little gray area between,” as Galea puts it, has continued to inform public health post-pandemic. To politicize public health, cave to public sentiment and social media pressure and prioritize influence over the pursuit of truth, Galea says, puts all of us at risk.

It also undermines public faith in science, one of the few institutions that had maintained a high level of trust into the Trump era. According to the Pew Research Center, the percentage of Americans who believe science has a mostly positive effect on society dropped to 57% in 2023, from 67% in 2016. Those who say they have a great deal of confidence in scientists dropped to 23%, from 39% in 2020. And these declines took place among both Republicans and Democrats.

A contagion doesn’t care about political parties or Twitter sinkholes. Public health must transcend an usvs.-them mindset to promote the common good across the political spectrum. Galea makes a powerful case that to carry the worst illiberal outcomes from the pandemic into the next crisis would be a devastating mistake.

“Le señalé por escrito al señor Fernández Rodes que conforme a lo establecido, en octubre de 2023, el gobierno del Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico anunció la selección de PR Toll Roads LLC (Metropistas) como concesionaria a cargo del desarrollo y seguridad vial de la autopista de peaje PR-52, Autopista Luis A. Ferré, entre otras carreteras. Es de conocimiento general que esta autopista presenta a diario enormes congestiones vehiculares, sobre todo en las horas pico de las mañanas y tardes, especialmente en el tramo entre las estaciones de peaje de Caguas Norte y Caguas Sur”,

Hau expuso que en agosto del pasado año, Instituto Nacional para la Reducción de la Congestión (NICR), adscrito al Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez (RUM), realizó un simposio, en el que se presentaron alternativas para combatir la congestión vehicular, producto de las investigaciones realizadas por académicos de la disciplina. El encuentro incluyó un conversatorio con oficiales expertos y líderes acerca del futuro de los sistemas de transportación en el país.

“Desde que una persona sale de su casa, se monta en el carro, busca estacionamiento, tiene

que caminar o espera el transporte público. Estos partidos—y también Proyecto Dignidad—debaten y pelean por algunos temas, pero cuando se trata de negar derechos se unen con una sola voz y como si fueran un mismo partido”.

El PS 1191 plantea que en caso de despido el patrono indique por escrito cual es la causa del despido. En Puerto Rico, añadió Bernabe, “la ley reconoce el con-

cepto del despido injustificado. Para un despido debe existir una “justa causa”, que están definidas por ley.

Si no hay justa causa el trabajador o trabajadora tiene derecho a una compensación. Esta medida no limita el derecho que tiene el patrono de despedir con justa causa. Pero facilita que cuando no haya justa causa el trabajador o trabajadora pueda reclamar la compensación a que tiene derecho. Pero, al igual que han hecho con otros derechos, los legisladores del PNP y PPD quieren que este derecho también se convierta en letra muerta”.

El senador comentó que “esto indigna, pero no sorprende”. Recientemente, con votos del PNP y el PPD se derrotó otra medida del MVC que planteaba que en las

escuelas deben enseñarse los derechos a la organización sindical, a la negociación colectiva y a la huelga, reconocidos por las secciones 17 y 18 de la Carta de Derechos de la Constitución. “¡Pedíamos algo tan radical como que se enseñe la Constitución! Pero esto fue rechazado por que era ‘indoctrinar’ con ideas subversivas. Estos legisladores son tan retrógrados que para ellos hasta la Constitución es demasiado radical, subversiva e ‘ideológica’. Al igual que ayer la voz cantante la llevó la Senadora de Proyecto Dignidad Joanne Rodríguez Veve.

Norman Jewison, filmmaker who spanned genres, dies at 97

orman Jewison, whose broad range as a filmmaker was reflected in the three movies that earned him Academy Award nominations for best director — the socially conscious drama “In the Heat of the Night,” the big-budget musical “Fiddler on the Roof” and the romantic comedy “Moonstruck” — died Saturday at his home. He was 97.

His death was confirmed by a spokesperson for the family, Jeff Sanderson. He declined to specify where Jewison lived, saying that the family requested privacy.

Jewison, whose career began in Canadian television and spanned more than 50 years, was, like his close friend Sidney Lumet and a select few other directors, best known for making films that addressed social issues. The most celebrated of those was “In the Heat of the Night” (1967), one of his earliest features and his first Oscar-winning film.

A story of racial tensions in the American South filtered through a murder mystery that brings together a Black Philadelphia detective (Sidney Poitier) and a white Mississippi police chief (Rod Steiger), “In the Heat of the Night” could not have been more timely: It opened weeks after racial violence had erupted in Detroit and Newark, New Jersey. It went on to win five Academy Awards, including best picture and best actor, for Steiger.

Poitier was among the many actors who had fond memories of working with Jewison. “He gives his actors room and keeps them as calm as he can, because it’s easier to speak with them when they’re calm,” he told The New York Times in 2011. “A director has to keep the actors on their toes while the camera’s running, but when the scene is done, they should be relaxing, nothing on their minds. There can’t be a constant level of seriousness. And with Norman, there’s always a lot of laughter.”

Jewison lost the best director award for “In the Heat of the Night” to Mike Nichols, who won for “The Graduate,” and he never did win an Oscar for directing.

But his films, and the actors in them, garnered many Oscars and 46 nominations.

Jewison once said, “The movies that address civil rights and social justice are the ones that are dearest to me.” He attributed his predilection for such movies to his lifelong sense of being an outsider.

Norman Frederick Jewison was born July 21, 1926, in Toronto, where his parents, Dorothy (Weaver) and Percy Jewison, ran a dry-goods store below their apartment. From a childhood love of movies, radio shows and vaudeville, he developed an interest in writing and performing.

The family was Methodist, but because of his surname, young Norman was teased and bullied by schoolmates who assumed he was Jewish. A later formative

On the outskirts of Memphis, Tennessee, he was chastised by a driver for sitting in the back of a bus with the Black passengers.

“Traveling in the South,” Jewison wrote in an autobiography, “This Terrible Business Has Been Good to Me” (2004), “I understood the meaning of being victimized even more than I had as a boy.”

After World War II, during which he served in the Canadian navy, he attended Victoria College at the University of Toronto, where he directed and acted in student theater productions. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts in 1949.

Like many filmmakers of his generation, Jewison came up through the ranks of television. He worked as a

writer and actor for the BBC in London and as a director for the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. in Toronto before landing at CBS in New York, where he directed specials starring Judy Garland, Harry Belafonte and Danny Kaye.

He directed his first feature film in 1962, for Universal Studios: “40 Pounds of Trouble,” a comedy based on a Damon Runyon story and starring Tony Curtis.

Under contract to Universal, he was paired with the studio’s biggest star at the time, Doris Day, for two more comedies, “The Thrill of It All” (1963) and “Send Me No Flowers” (1964).

Eager to prove his range, Jewison jumped at the chance to direct “The Cincinnati Kid” (1965), a drama with Steve McQueen as a Depression-era gambler, when the original director, Sam Peckinpah, was fired a few days into the shoot.

Jewison’s other 1960s films include “The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming” (1966), a satire of Cold War paranoia that was his first film to receive an Oscar nomination for best picture (although he was not nominated for best director), and “The Thomas Crown Affair” (1968), a romantic crime caper starring McQueen and Faye Dunaway. But the movie that sealed his reputation was “In the Heat of the Night,” which beat two other era-defining films, “Bonnie and Clyde” and “The Graduate,” for best picture honors.

Jewison married Margaret Ann Dixon, a model, in 1953. She died in 2004. He married Lynne St. David in 2010. He is survived by two sons from his first marriage, Kevin and Michael; a daughter, Jenny Snyder; and five grandchildren.

In 1988, Jewison founded the Canadian Film Center, a film school and institution in Toronto. He received the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award for his body of work at the 1999 Academy Awards and a lifetime achievement award from the Directors Guild of America in 2010. In 2011, the Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York presented a 15-film retrospective of his work.

“For me, films are about ideas,” Jewison told the Times on the occasion of the retrospective. “Every director should ask himself, ‘Why am I making this picture?’ And if you can’t answer that, you shouldn’t make it.”

Ariana Grande’s ‘Yes, And?’ strikes a familiar-sounding pose

here was never a question that Madonna’s 1990 pop-house classic “Vogue” was a tidal wave. But over the past year and a half, the song that helped bring the sounds of underground queer culture to the mainstream has continued to create powerful ripples.

Since 2019 — when the track’s release was chronicled on the FX drama “Pose” alongside discussions about authorship and authenticity — the hit has been experiencing a slow, steady resurgence. In 2022, Beyoncé mashed it up with her ballroom-referencing “Break My Soul,” updating Madonna’s rap to pay tribute to Black pop icons, and starting last year, the remix was given prime placement on both Beyoncé’s and Madonna’s tours. Ariana DeBose performed a heavily memed adaptation of “Vogue” at the 2023 BAFTA Awards, and “Vogue” even garnered the ultimate symbol of 2020s relevance: It was sampled by Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny on his album “Nadia Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana.”

Now “Vogue” is the animating reference on “Yes, And?,” the comeback single by Ariana Grande, who has spent three years out of the pop spotlight filming the movie version of “Wicked.” Like the original, written and produced by Madonna and Shep Pettibone, Grande’s song — credited to Grande, Max Martin and Ilya Salmanzadeh — features snappy synth drums; bright, syncopated stabs of piano; and a spoken-word bridge. But “Yes, And?” isn’t an invitation to the dance floor; it’s a rebuttal to Grande’s critics. So while it sounds superficially like “Vogue,” it doesn’t really feel like it.

In the first part of her career, Grande was mainly a classicist with roots in hip-hop soul, ’90s R&B and brassy show tunes. Her fifth album, “Thank U, Next” from 2019, introduced a shift: Adopting the cadences and textures of contemporary rap, Grande provided raw, upto-the-minute commentary on her personal life.

“Yes, And?” attempts to marry the two sides of her music, providing a throwback musical canvas that she embellishes with her responses to those gossiping about her looks and her latest relationship, with her “Wicked” co-star Ethan Slater. While its bones are unmistakably rooted in “Vogue,” the song takes some turns: A pitched-up vocal sample makes the track feel busy, and Grande, a gifted singer, can’t resist the impulse to fill its empty spaces with high trills and flowery runs. When she ap-

proaches the final chorus, she belts the song’s title phrase as if she’s the world’s most effusive improv enthusiast.

Paying tribute to an iconic song is risky business — just ask the many stars who have interpolated or sampled recent hits, only to come off like craven impersonators — and “Vogue,” in particular, is a masterpiece of elegance and restraint. Unlike many Madonna singles, “Vogue” is a remarkably selfless endeavor; it was inspired by the bold, creative queer pioneers of New York’s ballroom culture, and pays tribute to the scene without laying claim to it or assuming its struggles.

Where Madonna’s song is magnanimous and universal, Grande’s is mostly inward and specific. It spins the original’s enticement to lose oneself on the dance floor into a thoroughly modern pop subject: shaking off the haters. And in sliding between lyrics about self-affirmation (“I’m so done with caring what you think”) and queer self-determination (“Boy, come on, put your lipstick on”), she inadvertently falls into a trap — conflating multimillionaire pop star troubles with the struggles of a repressed, persecuted community.

Beyoncé’s “Break My Soul — The Queens Remix” melds “Vogue” with her own song of defiant joy from “Renaissance,” an album celebrating and spotlighting Black dance music with roots in the queer underground. The remix corrects Madonna’s ultra-white name drops while acknowledging the pop star’s role in mainstreaming vogueing, ballroom culture and queer art. (Erykah Badu, Missy Elliott and Grace Jones are among the names that replace Madonna’s roll call of movie stars.) As with “Vogue,” “Break My Soul — The Queens Remix” is a generous gesture that sees a blindingly powerful star minimizing her wattage for a few minutes, in an effort to share the light with predecessors who helped pave her path.

Like “Vogue,” “Yes, And?” arrived alongside a tsunami of tabloid headlines about a controversial on-set romance. But Madonna, unlike Grande, rarely uses her hits to contest her public narrative. Grande’s song yo-yos between “Vogue”-style inspiration on its chorus (“If you find yourself in a dark situation/ Just turn on your light”) and pettiness on its bridge (“Why do you care so much whose I ride?” she sings, with a strategic pause), making both modes seem halfhearted. By drawing attention back to her embattled few months, she eschews a golden rule that kept Madonna at the top even when she was most heavily criticized: Never apologize, never explain and let the music speak for itself.

How much water do I need to drink?

Q

: How much water does the average person really need to drink? And is there such a thing as too much?

A: If you’re not sipping from a 64-ounce Stanley cup all day, are you even alive? Hydration is once again having a moment — TikTok videos with the #watertok hashtag now have more than 1 billion views.

Whether you’re drinking from a trendy tumbler or a plain old glass, there is no “one-size-fits-all” answer to how much water you should drink in a day. The closest thing the United States has to a water consumption recommendation comes from the National Academy of Medicine, which, in 2004, reported that healthy men usually stay adequately hydrated when they drink at least three liters (nearly 13 cups) of water per day, and that women are typically hydrated when they drink at least 2.2 liters (just over nine cups) per day, not including the water they consume via food.

But these guidelines should not be taken as gospel, experts said.

“Most people, even if they stay below that recommendation, will be just fine,” said Dr. Siddharth P. Shah, a nephrologist at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania who specializes in hydration and electrolyte balance.

When should I drink water, and how much?

Water is, of course, crucial for our survival. It helps us eliminate waste, maintain blood pressure, regulate body temperature and more.

Some people need more water than others. People who are especially active — who have physically demanding jobs or who exercise a lot — lose more water through sweat and will need to compensate by drinking additional water, said Dr. George Chiampas, an emergency medicine specialist at Northwestern Medicine and the chief medical officer for the U.S. Soccer Federation.

People may also need to drink more if they live in hot climates, have larger bodies or lots of muscle mass, have loose stools, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have had kidney stones or recurrent urinary tract infections,

experts said.

Over the course of life, a person’s water needs change, too. Typically, with age, people lose muscle and gain fat, Shah said. Because fat contains less water than muscle, people generally need to consume less water with age to maintain healthy tissues.

Yet some older adults still do not consume as much water as they need, Shah said, because the bodies of older people — particularly, research suggests those over age 60 — are not as good at detecting thirst. The level of dehydration “that would make you thirsty at the age of 40 might not make you as thirsty at the age of 80,” he explained.

If you do feel thirsty, you’re probably dehydrated and should drink water, said Dr. Alysia Robichau, a family and sports medicine physician at Houston Methodist.

There can be more subtle signs of dehydration, too, such as feeling constantly cold or having dry skin, Robichau said. People who are acutely or chronically dehydrated may also have headaches or dry eyes, she added.

Because people go without water while they sleep, “most people wake up and they’re already dehydrated,” Chiampas said. It’s generally a good idea, he said, to start the day with a glass.

It’s perfectly fine to add flavorings to your water or to drink carbonated water, Robichau said — but she warned that coffee and other caffeinated beverages may not be as hydrating as uncaffeinated drinks. Drinking a caffeinated beverage, especially if you don’t drink them regularly, can reduce the ability of the kidneys to absorb water, leading you to lose additional water through urine. Alcoholic beverages are dehydrating, too.

Keep in mind that you can also get water from food. Some fruits and vegetables, such as watermelon and celery, are mostly water, Shah said. The National Academy of Medicine estimated that people get, on average, 20% of their water through food.

Most people are unlikely to drink too much water, but it is possible, especially among endurance athletes who drink lots of water quickly, Chiampas said. Doing so can disrupt the body’s balance of sodium and potassium and lead to potentially fatal water intoxication.

“There are a lot of excessively large water bottles being carried around by people these days,” Shah said.

“But the overwhelming majority of people do not need to drink an excess of water.”

Exploring caribbean food, island by island

hen chef Tavel Bristol-Joseph was opening Canje in Austin, Texas, in 2021, he did something he had yet to do as a restaurant owner: He decided to tell his own story. Namely, the story of growing up in Georgetown, Guyana, a South American country with deep ties to the Caribbean through food and culture.

Ten years earlier, when Bristol-Joseph moved to Austin, he couldn’t find a single Caribbean restaurant. So for the Canje menu, he added pepperpot, a Guyanese dish of longsimmered beef with earthy spices like cinnamon and allspice, and heat from Guyanese wiri wiri peppers. The only problem was he didn’t have cassareep, a bitter cassava juice that the dish needed to truly taste of Guyana.

So, he called his cousin there, and “he put me in touch with another cousin who makes it, and they shipped it to me in Austin,” Bristol-Joseph said. “I wanted to showcase Caribbean food in the most respectful and authentic way I could’ve.”

About 46% of Black immigrants in the United States — some 2 million people — are from the Caribbean, according to the Migration Policy Institute, a think tank that tracks im-

migration patterns. They come from 13 countries, over an area larger than Texas and Alaska combined, stretching from the Bahamas to South America. Despite that size and diversity, the Caribbean and its cooking are often talked about in broad, regional terms.

“The Caribbean is not a monolith. It’s beautifully different, and there’s unity in that diversity,” said Brigid Ransome-Washington, the author of “Coconut. Ginger. Shrimp. Rum: Caribbean Flavors for Every Season.” But despite that variation, she said, the food is too often translated as “simple, fruit-forward or tourist-friendly fare.”

Bristol-Joseph is among a new guard of chefs around the United States who are exploring the cooking of the Caribbean through the cuisine of individual islands. These chefs, many of whom are first-generation Caribbean Americans with backgrounds in fine-dining kitchens, are getting specific about each island’s unique assemblages of culinary influences — and how all of that is evolving even further.

A region of vast cultural exchange, the Caribbean has for centuries been influenced by many groups, from the original Indigenous inhabitants like the Tainos, to colonizing European powers and the enslaved Africans

brought to the area by the trans-Atlantic slave trade, and the Asian and South Americans who have immigrated.

This history as a crossroads helped shape what we call Caribbean food today.

Much of the work of introducing these flavors and dishes to the United States was done in the 1970s and ’80s by immigrants who opened takeout restaurants selling plates of comforting fare in Caribbean enclaves in cities like Miami and New York, and by chefs and entrepreneurs like Norma Shirley and Lowell F. Hawthorne, the founder of the Golden Krust chain of Jamaican restaurants.

For Haitian American chef Gregory Gourdet, the complexities of Caribbean history are best broached through food. At Kann in Portland, Oregon, Gourdet showcases Haiti’s history and his memories of visits to the island and his grandmother’s home in New Jersey, where he first ate Haitian dishes. “With so few Haitian restaurants in this country we had to start from the beginning and tell the whole story,” he said.

Servers at Kann learn not only its menu of Haitian wood-fired cooking, with ingredients influenced by Oregon’s seasonal bounty, but also the history of the island. They can then walk diners through the importance of dishes like griyo, braised and fried pork pieces, or diri ak djon djon, a rice dish made with black mushrooms grown in northern Haiti.

Through this approach, Gourdet has also learned about his own heritage, after years of working at European and Asian fine-dining restaurants in New York City and Portland. “I was spending so much time learning and cooking other people’s cultures, I wasn’t learning and sharing my own,” he said.

Pastry chef Paola Velez, an author and a founder of Bakers Against Racism, had a similar experience. “I use cooking as a way to find my own identity,” she said of her style, which she calls “Americana with Caribbean influences.”

When she was working at a Mediterranean restaurant in Washington, D.C., Greek spoon sweets reminded her of Dominican desserts like dulce de cereza, Caribbean cherries in spiced syrup. At her next restaurant job, at Kith and Kin in Washington, she was able to embrace her heritage more fully, combining Dominican ingredients with classical French techniques in desserts like carrot cake with passion-fruit glaze or plantain sticky buns.

In Oakland, California, chef Nelson German converted his restaurant alaMar to a fully Dominican kitchen in 2014. After years working in Eurocentric restaurants, he became passionate about Dominicans embracing the African influences in their cuisine.

His menu focuses on memories of growing up in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan and the Bronx, where his family

The oxtail, stewed with butter beans and chile africano, is a tribute to a dish his mother often made. “That oxtail dish has saved me,” he said.

“It’s that connection, it’s about storytelling and memory.”

Chris Viaud, the chef and owner of Northern Comfort Hospitality Group in Milford, New Hampshire, enlisted his family to help bring Haitian food and stories to his community at their casual restaurant Ansanm, which means “together” in Haitian Creole. He said diners have been curious about these stories and dishes like chicken braised in Creole sauce and delicate baked pastries filled with spiced beef, vegetables or chicken.

“The response was overwhelming,” he said. “It really resonated with being true to myself.”

Chef Sebastián Martinez is going deep on Puerto Rican cuisine, in Puerto Rico. Since opening Celeste in San Juan in August 2022, he and his brother, Diego, have focused on ingredients from the island.

This often requires correcting diners’ beliefs about what is and what isn’t part of island cooking. “I’ve had people say, ‘There’s no way that yellowfin tuna comes from P.R.’ And it poses a nice challenge of showing what’s here and what’s been under their noses the whole time.”

The brothers have established a network of local fishermen, farmers and artisans who supply them with ingredients like rambutans, vinegar made of dark-purple sea grapes and even pig ears.

“So many people and places have had an impact on the Caribbean, we want to show all these beautiful things,” Martinez said.

This new group of chefs may not strictly adhere to traditional Caribbean recipes, but that adaptability is part of what makes the food of the region so special, Ransome-Washington said. “There should be an approachable and respectable amount of freedom because that’s how these foods were born.”

To her, the cuisine’s ability to “bend itself to breeze” is not an accident, but instead “the work of genius.”

Take Trinidadian chef Lisa Nelson. At her New Orleans restaurant Queen Trini Lisa, she makes a localized riff on doubles, the quintessential Trinidadian flatbread influenced by the Indians who were indentured servants on the island.

“It’s so big on crawfish here that I started making doubles with them,” Nelson said. “The kitchen is a place where we can big-up our island.”

his pepperpot a local spin. He buys whole wild boar, an invasive species in Texas, and breaks them down to cubes of meat that are cooked until tender. The bones are used to make a stock scented with thyme, cinnamon, orange rinds and cassareep that Bristol-Joseph buys from a cousin in Guyana. The dish is garnished with fresh herbs that change with the season; right now it’s wild fennel and oxalis.

At Bridgetown Roti in Los Angeles, Rashida Holmes, the chef and a partner, serves the Bajan fare she remembers from her childhood. She is encouraged by the emergence of new Caribbean chefs across the country. “Historically the cuisines of brown and Black people are not celebrated in the culinary space,” she said. “But that’s changing in the last four or five years.”

There’s still a long way to go, Holmes added. “If there can be a thousand pizza places in each city, then there can be at least 10 different Caribbean places.”

Make the cauliflower: Set an oven rack 10 inches or so from the broiler. Heat the oven to 375 degrees.

2. Trim the base of the cauliflower so it can sit flat. Flip the cauliflower base-side up and cut a deep “X” into the base, stopping when you reach the stems of the florets. This helps the core and base cook at the same rate as the rest of the head.

3. Rub the cauliflower all over with the olive oil, then season the cauliflower all over with the salt. Sit the cauliflower in a large, heavy ovenproof skillet (11- to 13-inch works best) and roast to soften up the cauliflower (it’ll go from white to cream in color), 30 to 35 minutes. Pour 1/2 cup of water directly into the skillet and keep roasting until the cauliflower has patches of light golden brown and is just tender enough to easily be pierced with the tip of a sharp knife, 20 to 25 minutes more.

4. Meanwhile, make the glaze: While the cauliflower is roasting, combine the glaze ingredients in a blender and blend on high speed until completely smooth, 1 to 2 minutes.

5. When the cauliflower is tender, remove it from the oven and heat the broiler. Use a flexible spatula or silicone pastry brush to rub the top and sides of the cauliflower (don’t neglect those lower sides!) with the glaze.

6. Broil the cauliflower, basting it after 5 minutes with the juices in the skillet and trying your best to get that flavorful liquid in all of its nooks and crannies, until the top has spots of black char, 10 to 15 minutes. Serve hot or warm.

News and notes about science W hat came before Tyrannosaurus rex Researchers have announced the discovery of a new species of Tyrannosaurus from New Mexico, one that appeared in the fossil record 5 million to 7 million years before the familiar tyrant lizard. Their research, published in Scientific Reports, suggests a new chapter could be added to the origin story of Tyrannosaurus rex.

When staff members from the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science collected the partial skull of a large adult tyrannosaurus from the Elephant Butte Reservoir in the state in the 1980s, they assumed the fossils belonged to T. rex. But when paleontologist Sebastian Dalman began working on the specimen in 2013, he noticed subtle differences between it and other T. rex skulls.

Rather than the deep bone-crushing jaws of an adult T. rex, the lower jaw of the reservoir specimen looked more slender. Its teeth were different, and the animal lacked the prominent ridge of bone found behind T. rex’s eye, Dalman said. The animal was about 39 feet long, around the same length as an adult T. rex.

T. rex fossils are believed to be 66 million to 68 million years old, the period recorded in the Hell Creek Formation of the Plains states, said Spencer Lucas, paleontology curator at the museum and an author on the paper. When the fossil was initially discovered, researchers initially assumed the rock layers that produced it — the McRae Formation of New Mexico — belonged to the same period. But the team’s dating of the rocks now suggests that the McRae Formation was 5 million to 7 million years older than Hell Creek, and that the specimen they found came from an earlier relative.

Their findings, published in the journal Nature, reveal that these nearly 10-foot-tall apes were most likely doomed by their specialized diet and an inability to adapt to a changing environment.

Paleontologists first discovered Gigantopithecus in the mid-1930s in a Hong Kong apothecary where the ape’s unusually large molars were being hawked as “dragon teeth.”

The animal was named to honor Davidson Black, the Canadian scientist who studied the early human ancestor known as Peking man.

In the decades since, scientists have unearthed about 2,000 Gigantopithecus teeth and a handful of fossil jawbones from caves throughout southern China.

The dearth of fossilized bones makes reconstructing Gigantopithecus difficult; paleoartists depict the ancient ape as looking like an orangutan (its closest living relative) crossed with a silverback gorilla, but bigger. Nevertheless, the very great ape’s teeth, which are encased in a thick layer of enamel, preserve a wealth of clues to how these enigmatic primates lived and potentially why they died out.

Yingqi Zhang, a paleontologist from the

Institute of Vertebrate Palaeontology and Palaeoanthropology in Beijing and an author on the new paper, has studied Gigantopithecus fossils for more than a decade. To determine what drove them to extinction, Zhang needed to nail down exactly when Gigantopithecus disappeared. He teamed up with Kira Westaway, a geochronologist at Macquarie University in Australia.

The team collected and dated material from 22 caves across southern China. To finetune the ages of the fossils and the cave sediments, the researchers applied six dating techniques. They also analyzed isotopes and pollen in the samples to recreate what the environment was like around the time Gigantopithecus disappeared. Finally, they compared wear patterns in the oversized teeth with fossilized teeth from Pongo weidenreichi, an orangutan that lived alongside Gigantopithecus.

Gigantopithecus, they say, went extinct between 295,000 and 215,000 years ago.

The pollen samples revealed that before that extinction window, the local environment was dominated by evergreen trees that created closed-canopy forests. Gigantopithecus appeared to be well suited to those environments.

from that period revealed that the apes were eating fibrous plants, fruits and flowers.

Beginning around 600,000 years ago, the region’s climate began to change with the seasons as dense forests gave way to a patchwork of open forests and grasslands. That led to “dry periods when fruits were difficult to find,” Westaway said. Gigantopithecus switched to less nutritious alternatives like bark and twigs.

As the environment became unfavorable, Gigantopithecus’s size began to work against it. Unlike spry orangutans, who could travel greater distances through the canopy to forage, Gigantopithecus were most likely restricted to shrinking patches of forest. — JACK TAMISIEA From ancient fossil, a skin-deep discovery Dry, scaly skin may be one of the least fun parts of winter. But in the broad scheme of things, a tough, watertight hide is part of what enabled the ancestors of modern reptiles, birds and mammals to move inland while their thinskinned amphibian cousins remained close to water.

In a study published in the journal Current Biology, scientists announced the discovery of the oldest-known piece of fossilized skin.

The pebbly scrap, which is no larger than a human fingernail, most likely belonged to an ancient reptile and provides rare insight into the evolution of skin.

The piece of skin is one of countless traces of prehistoric life preserved in the Richards Spur limestone cave system near an oil seep in southwestern Oklahoma. When animals fell into the caves 289 million years ago, the conditions were ideal for preservation: fine clay sediments rapidly buried the bodies, low levels of oxygen in the groundwater slowed the decay process, and hydrocarbons from the oil permeated the tissues and made them less hospitable to bacteria. The tar seeped into the fossils, staining them.

In 2018, Bill May, a retired forensic analyst, shared some tiny flakes from the Richards Spur that he couldn’t identify with Robert Reisz, a paleontologist at the University of Toronto Mississauga.

“We got very excited by what we saw under the microscope,” said Reisz, an author of the paper.

“The texture of the skin is quite unique and interesting,” said Ethan Mooney, a graduate student who worked with Reisz on the paper. “It really stands out from other fossil material. It’s obviously not bone.” If anything, the fossilized tissue bore a striking resemblance to the scaly skin of a crocodile. — KATE GOLEMBIEWSKI

‘It’s a money day’: Detroit businesses are loving the Lions’ playoff run

T

he Detroit Lions, whose roots stretch back to 1930, are just one of four NFL teams to have never played in the Super Bowl. (Pop quiz: Can you guess the other three?)

Before this season, the team had won only one playoff game since Dwight D. Eisenhower was president. So Lions fans were justifiably delirious when their team won its division for the first time in three decades and broke its playoff drought this month, beating the Los Angeles Rams and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The team’s playoff run has provided much joy and a boost for local businesses around Ford Field, the team’s stadium.

‘On playoff day, it’s been nonstop.’

Buddy’s Pizza, a restaurant in downtown Detroit, was packed on Sunday.

“It’s really big for us and a lot of other bars and restaurants in the area,” said Andrew Stanek, a manager at the restaurant’s location near Ford Field. “The fans of the Detroit Lions, through thick and thin and through all the 60 years of bad, they just stick with their team.”

A few blocks away, at Harry’s Detroit Bar & Grill, a line had formed outside the restaurant and down the sidewalk.

César Ramírez, an assistant general manager at Harry’s, said the restaurant had record sales during the Lions’ first playoff win against the Rams.

“We’ve definitely seen a huge uptick in our business,” he said, adding that the restaurant earned a little over $60,000 the day of the team’s first playoff win, up nearly $40,000 for a typical day’s earnings from the same period a year ago.

“Everybody on the schedule wants to work because they know it’s a money day,” Ramírez said.

The Lions’ victory against the Buccaneers on Sunday propelled them to their first NFC championship game since the 1991 season. While they’ll face the San Francisco 49ers in Santa Clara, California, this weekend, bars in Detroit are sure to be packed with Lions fans hoping their team can make it to the Super

‘I’ve been waiting a long time for this.’

Lions fans were all smiles as they waited to enter Ford Field. For those who couldn’t secure tickets, there was a tailgate near the stadium at Eastern Market, a collection of shops and restaurants in a neighborhood that bears the same name.

Ron Crachiola, who is known as Crackman, was among those attending the tailgate. Crachiola said that he started going to games with his father 60 years ago, and that they had watched far more losses than wins but never lost faith. He said he wished his father, who died in April at 95, could see the Lions fighting for a Super Bowl berth. On Sunday, Crachiola wore a necklace with a photo of his father on it.

“For the city, it means a lot; for myself, it brings tears to my eyes,” said Crachiola, who will turn 72 this week. “It’s still like a dream come true. I am still on cloud nine. I sit there and I just think: This is really happening. We’re two games away from the Super Bowl.”

The businesses around Ford Field have benefited from the Lions’ playoff run, as well as from years of investment in Detroit’s downtown, a part of the city that has received particular attention after the city’s bankruptcy a little over a decade ago.

Detroit is vast — 139 square miles — and some neighborhoods, long speckled with empty homes and vacant lots, have seen little change amid the Lions’ successes.

Still, some in Michigan say the team’s record is creating new bonds.

Tiffany and Don Gilling came to Ford Field with their children, Tripp, 9, and Kyden, 12, and a friend, Justin Vidosh, and his 8-year-old son, Parker.

“I think it means so much for our city — the passion, the fun,” Tiffany Gilling said. “It’s bringing us closer together.”

“My sons — that’s the best part — to see my kids live through it and just have fun,” Gilling added. “This is something they will always remember. This is a core family memory that we are making, and that’s what brings me the most happiness.”
