Amainland cat protection group has sued the National Park Service in federal court to prevent the extermination of cats from the Paseo del Morro National Recreation Trail.
This lawsuit was brought by Alley Cat Allies Incorporated (ACA), a nonprofit organization whose mission is to protect and improve cats’ lives through advocacy, education and action. The group, which filed a request for an injunction in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, seeks “to prevent the unlawful, misguided, and cruel roundup and likely extermination of scores of cats from federal land in Puerto Rico by the National Park Service (NPS).
The cats have lived in the area that is now the Paseo since long before the area came under federal jurisdiction, and the cats are beloved by residents and tourists alike, the ACA said. Despite these facts, the NPS has arbitrarily decided to pursue an unattainable, unnecessary and inhumane goal: the complete eradication of cats within the Paseo, the suit says.
Prior to its recent plan, the NPS partnered with a nonprofit organization to manage the health, welfare and population of the cats through a Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program, whereby cats are trapped, neutered, eartipped, vaccinated and given veterinarian care, and returned to the park.
“This program has improved the cats’ lives and allowed them to thrive in their natural outdoor home in a community that cares about them,” the suit said. “Now, after all of this time and despite the cats being valued community members
who cause no harm and who are being actively spayed or neutered and vaccinated through a TNR program, NPS has arbitrarily decided it will end the TNR program and take a phased approach to the management of community cats, which will include continued trapping and removal efforts by an animal welfare organization if one is found suitable, and otherwise by a removal agency, removal of all feeding stations in the park, monitoring, and additional removal efforts if deemed necessary.”
The suit claims the NPS will “euthanize” or cause the “euthanasia” of any removed cats that are deemed unsuitable for adoption or that cannot be placed in animal shelters due to limited space.
The NPS claims the plan is necessary to improve the safety of park visitors and employees, and protect park resources and reduce impacts on native species; alleviate nuisance issues and align the visitor experience with the purpose of the park; and bring the park into compliance with existing authorities for invasive species.
“NPS’s espoused justifications for its Plan are transparently pretextual,” the suit said. “NPS has provided no evidence that the community cats pose any danger to humans, has not demonstrated that the cats in the Paseo prey upon or harm any native species or wildlife, has not provided support for and appears to exaggerate the nuisance allegedly caused by the cats, and makes no attempt to explain why existing authorities for managing invasive species — assuming the cats can be classified as an invasive species — are suddenly a paramount concern after nearly two decades of an active TNR program which has contributed to a harmonious coexistence between cats, the community, and tourists.”
In addition, the group said, the NPS fails to acknowledge, much less address, the fact that removing the cats will not solve what the NPS claims is a problem because even with the NPS’s proposed plan, community cats will continue to live in the area surrounding the Paseo and frequent cat abandonments in and around the Paseo will continue to occur. While the cats in the Paseo are currently being fed, vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and treated with veterinary care, the new cats that will inevitably be introduced into the Paseo will not be, the suit says.
While the number of cats across Old San Juan far outnumbers that currently in the Paseo, the NPS only has jurisdiction to remove the community cats within the Paseo itself, meaning that whatever issues NPS believes community cats are causing in the Paseo will continue to exist all around the site, and due to the “Vacuum Effect,” the community cats removed from the Paseo are highly likely to be replaced by community cats from neighboring colonies, the lawsuit said.
About 100 off-duty police officers from different parts of Puerto Rico showed up voluntarily on Saturday to reinforce their colleagues, who occupied the Sabana Abajo residential complex in Carolina after Police Commissioner Antonio López Figueroa ordered the officers to remain in place until they find those responsible for the slaying of police Sgt. Eliezer Ramos Vélez on Friday.
López Figueroa praised the commitment and solidarity of the agents who have been arriving, without being called upon to do so, to support the effort at Sabana Abajo. Earlier on Saturday, he announced that police had occupied five other residential properties in connection with the killing of officer Ramos Vélez.
“We are going to increase the interventions, until and as soon as we manage to solve the murder of the policeman,” López Figueroa said at the Lagos de Blasina residential complex in Carolina. “We are going to continue with these interventions as long as necessary in these residential areas that are part of the Sabana Abajo criminal organization.”
The police commissioner said Friday that a person of interest was in custody in the case.
“We continue with the investigation of the murder of Eliezer Ramos Vélez,” he said. “We have several full coordination working groups with the federal agencies that are here by my side. We are intervening in several places in the Sabana Abajo residential area. A number of people have been approached, who are persons of interest in the case.”
“I believe that we are on the right track,”
López Figueroa added, while urging citizens to continue supporting the police with information that could lead to the apprehension of those responsible.
“In Sabana Abajo, many good people, many productive people, are helping us to give the best quality of life by intervening with these people,” he said.
The police chief said the detainee, who has not been identified, is being interviewed by police officers to determine how he is related to the case.
“Those details are in the possession of the agent himself, Agent Torres, who is investigating the case, and the assigned unit officer,” López Figueroa said. “And we ask the public, 787.343.2020, is the number to call. We are ready to receive any information that comes in …”
“We’re going to continue until the people who were directly involved in Eliezer’s murder are placed under arrest, right?,” the police commissioner continued. “And that’s the purpose. They killed an innocent policeman, a responsible policeman committed to his job. And believe me, in God’s name, this is going to be cleared up, and we’re going to be able to give the family peace of mind.”
According to the information available, Sgt. Eliezer Ramos Vélez, 35, left his shift at about 4 a.m. On the way to his residence on the Román Baldorioty de Castro Expressway, he saw some people on motorbikes and an all-terrain vehicle (four-track) engaging in gunfire. The officer, a 12-year police veteran who served as an agent in special operations, followed them in his blue Hyundai Tucson vehicle to the Sabana Abajo complex, where he was killed at 4:25 a.m.
The sergeant’s equipment and his regulation firearm were stolen.
López Figueroa noted that the operation includes the El Faro, El Coral, La Esmeralda, Los Mirtos and Lagos de Blasina residential complexes in Carolina. He said the five residential complexes are lorded over by the criminal organization to which the people wanted by the authorities allegedly belong.
Also on Friday, Gov. Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia declared three days of mourning in memory of Ramos Vélez, with all flags on public buildings remaining at half-mast from today until sunset on Wednesday.
“It has been a tragic day for Puerto Rico
and it is with deep sorrow that we come together as a people to extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Agent Ramos Vélez,” the governor said in a written statement. “These acts of violence and contempt for life have no place in the Puerto Rico we all want. We all repudiate this vile murder, and the Puerto Rico Police will not stop until it is solved and the guilty pay for their actions. May God keep in his glory this public servant who lost his life, while protecting our people. We recognize him and all the members of the Puerto Rico Police for the sacrifice they make every day and we assure them that Agent Eliezer Ramos Vélez will never be forgotten.”
More than 200,000 LUMA Energy customers were without electricity service in an Easter Sunday blackout.
According to power generation assets manager Genera PR’s Facebook page, “Breakdowns are reported in units #2 of Central Aguirre and #6 of Central San Juan. The back-up units are coming online to restore service to customers as soon as possible.”
Ángel Rafael Figueroa Jaramillo, the former president of the Electrical Industry and
Irrigation Workers Union (UTIER by its Spanish acronym), wrote on his account on X: “Holy blackout! Today we are again in load shift with more than 108,000 subscribers without service.”
In addition, on Saturday there was a blackout around 9 p.m. because Genera PR had another breakdown in Unit 2 of the Aguirre power plant in Salinas and went out of service.
The large power plants remained out of service as of Sunday morning, leaving 201,195 customers without service, according to LUMA Energy.
Police Commissioner Antonio López FigueroaThe Financial Oversight and Management Board has requested an extension until September of the lead mediator tenure as part of talks to settle the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority’s (PREPA) bankruptcy.
The petition, filed late last week, came more than a week after the case in favor and against the confirmation of PREPA’s debt adjustment plan was submitted. The case is awaiting a ruling from U.S. District Judge Laura Taylor Swain, who is overseeing Puerto Rico’s Title III bankruptcy cases.
“Consistent with statements made by the court at the hearing to consider confirmation of the modified Fourth Amended Title III Plan of Adjustment of the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority regarding the availability of Mediation Team and to further the Oversight Board’s goal of building a mediated consensual resolution for PREPA’s Title III Case, the Oversight Board seeks to extend the Term End Date to September 30, 2024,” the oversight board said.
On March 29, 2024, the lead mediator informed the counsel to the oversight board that Assured, the Majority Member PREPA Ad Hoc Group, the PREPA Ad Hoc Group, and GoldenTree did not object to the extension.
Last week, PREPA contractor Cobra Acquisitions
called for a trial by the end of September, alleging the electric utility is years overdue in paying hundreds of millions of dollars for performed work.
The judge then ordered all parties to engage promptly with the mediator in reasonable faith efforts to resolve all outstanding disputes with Cobra.
“If the parties’ disputes have not been resolved through payment or mediation, the parties are directed to file, by May 8, 2024, a joint status report,” Swain said.
PREPA and Cobra are still at odds over $73.7 million in charges invoiced by PREPA that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has denied and are being appealed, $69 million under Cobra’s first contract with PREPA primarily related to tax reimbursements, $84 million in interest allegedly owed under that contract, $72 million under a second contract and $112 million in interest under that contract.
“At this time, the government parties have no legitimate basis to claim hardship from having to litigate the administrative expense motion,” Cobra said in the joint status report. “And there is no doubt that Cobra has suffered and is continuing to suffer substantial prejudice from the effectively indefinite stay, including, among other things, the denial of payment (causing Cobra’s own financial challenges), the incurrence of significant legal fees and the potential loss of evidence.”
The money is allegedly owed for work done six years ago after hurricanes Irma and Maria devastated the island.
Gov. Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia recently enacted new laws, including one that would establish a strategic plan to revitalize the urban center of Río Piedras, which in recent years has become a ghost town.
One of the six new laws signed by the governor would make it easier to remove abandoned vehicles from island streets.
According to the new law, which goes into effect in 60 days, it will be presumed that a vehicle, whether in good condition or unusable, has been abandoned if it has been left unattended on a public road or in any adjacent area, public or private, for a period greater than 24 hours. Senate Bill (SB) 612, now a law, establishes a process for identifying the owners of an abandoned vehicle.
After the state or municipal police notify the owner of the vehicle that they must remove it within a period of 24 hours, if they do not do so, the state and municipal authorities are authorized to tow it away.
In cases where the owner of the vehicle could not be identified, the vehicle will remain for a period of 15 days on the property to which it was towed before its disposal.
Meanwhile, and with the objective of supporting, through incentives and other benefits aimed at existing businesses or those to be created in the urban area of Río
Piedras, the governor signed House Joint Resolution (HJR) 450, authorizing the Department of Economic Development and Commerce to design a “Strategic Plan for the Revitalization and Development of the Urban Center in Río Piedras.”
As part of the strategic plan, a committee will be created for the purpose of devising the plan, and including the municipality of San Juan, the Trust for the Development of Río Piedras, and the Community Board of Río Piedras, among other private and government entities.
The committee is to be charged with devising a plan for the real estate of the area.
Another measure that is already law is SB 1250, which authorizes the concession or renewal, for a period of no more than 50 years, of companies that provide aqueduct and sewage services through a private system, issued initially by the Public Service Commission.
Pierluisi also signed into law SB 1224, which reduces from six years to two years the term in which an insurer, third-party administrator, pharmacy benefit manager, or healthcare services organization may request reimbursement for a non-processable claim previously paid to the supplier, among other related purposes.
The governor also signed into law HJR 66, SB 467 and Senate Joint Resolution (SJR) 340. The first measure orders the Real Estate Evaluation and Disposition Committee to
evaluate the transfer-usufruct or any other legal business of the Francisco Mariano Quiñones school to the municipality of Salinas to develop a social-tourism and economic project in the facilities. SV 467 declares Feb. 12 of each year as National Klinefelter Syndrome Awareness Day, and SJR 340 names the court in the El Retiro neighborhood of San Germán after Julio Vega Vázquez.
Just minutes before the cargo ship Dali was set to glide under Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, the ship’s alarms began to blare. The lights went out. The engine halted. Even the rudder, which the crew uses to maneuver the vessel, was frozen.
As a frantic effort to restore the ship was underway, the pilot soon recognized that the aimless vessel was drifting toward disaster, and called for help.
The cascading collapse of the vessel’s most crucial operating systems left the Dali adrift until it ultimately collided with the Key bridge, knocking the span into the river and killing six people. But as crews over the weekend were still sorting out how to disentangle the ship and recover the bodies of those who died, investigators were also turning to the most central question: What could have caused such a catastrophic failure at the worst possible moment?

Engineers, captains and shipping officials around the world are waiting for that answer in an era when the industry’s largest ships can carry four times as much cargo as those just a few decades ago, navigating through congested urban ports under bridges that may carry tens of thousands of people a day.
Already, a few key questions are emerging, according to engineers and shipping experts monitoring the investigation, and most of them point to the electrical generators that power nearly every system on the 984-foot vessel — not only the lights, navigation and steering but also the pumps that provide fuel, oil and water to the massive diesel engine.
The “complete blackout” reported by the pilot is hard to explain in today’s shipping world, in which large commercial vessels now operate with a range of automation, computerized monitoring, and built-in redundancies and backup systems designed to avert just such a calamity.
“In the last 30 to 40 years, the level of that redundancy has been increasing quite considerably,” said John Carlton, a professor of marine engineering at City, University of London. “The ship of today is so very different to the one of 30 years ago.”
Yet there is a wide range of possible factors contributing to the failure that investigators will have to sift through as they interview crew members, examine fuel supplies and scrutinize the ship systems that broke down that night.
If there was faulty maintenance, it could have caused a delay in starting the emergency backup generator, or an electrical fault could have prevented it from remaining engaged. Contaminated fuel or an inadvertently closed valve could have fouled or starved the main generators. Human error could have set off problems or failed to overcome them. The ship’s own automation could have led to equipment glitches. Or a fire could have broken out and damaged crucial equipment.
The answers will have implications not only for international shipping but also for who is liable for damages that S&P Global Ratings estimated at more than $2 billion.
Grace Ocean Private, the Singapore-based company that owns the Dali, said it was “fully cooperating with federal and
state government agencies.” Grace Ocean’s owner is Yoshimasa Abe, a Japanese citizen who owns at least two shipping lines and more than 50 vessels, including some of the world’s biggest container ships. While the Dali was insured, Abe’s company potentially faces large claims against it, depending on the findings of the accident investigators.
Given the scope of the failure, it is possible that there were multiple problems. Timothy McCoy, a professor specializing in marine engineering at the University of Michigan, said that much like a plane crash, an extensive breakdown of a ship’s systems typically involves a sequence of events.
A close look at the potential factors would include many of the most essential elements in the operation of a modern cargo vessel — including the fuel that feeds the ship’s 55,000-horsepower diesel engine that in turn powers the ship’s propeller.
Fuel also powers the huge generators that provide electricity to container ships. And a ship like the Dali needs electrical power to run its main engine — its fuel injectors are electrically powered, for instance — and steer its rudder. Without electricity, the ship can go adrift.
At the time it was built, 2015, the Dali had four generators, according to S&P Maritime Portal, a shipping data service. Not all of them run at once, usually, but container vessels leaving port will typically have an extra generator running, to provide reserve power if needed. “At least two should be online at the same time,” said Mark Bulaclac, an academic on maritime issues who has also served as an engineer on container ships.
If all generators were running on a common source of bad fuel, that might have caused them all to fail.
Henry Lipian, a forensic crash investigator who previously worked in the Coast Guard, said the sudden loss of the ship’s generators led him to think of fuel problems as a potential culprit.
He said investigators would need to look at the fuel on board, how it was delivered, whether it had been tested beforehand and what filtration systems were on the ship. But he
said that a problem with the fuel valves could be another explanation.
“I’d want to start tracing all of those fuel lines,” he said.
In Baltimore, investigators were in the process of collecting a fuel sample from the Dali in order to examine the quality, viscosity and signs of any contaminants, said Jennifer Homendy, the chair of the National Transportation Safety Board.
Yet other experts said there were also reasons to doubt the contaminated fuel scenario. New fuels typically undergo testing, and duplicate filtration systems can help clean out problematic components that were not flagged in testing. No reports have emerged of other ships having a problem from the same batch of fuel.
Maritime engineers say an electrical chain reaction could also have caused all the generators to go down. When one generator fails, it can create a situation in which there is too much demand for too little supply of electricity. Other generators are then at risk of being damaged, so the system will shut them down, too, said Richard Burke, a professor of naval architecture and marine engineering at SUNY Maritime College in New York.
“It’s as if you and I are both holding up a heavy weight, and I let go,” he said, “You can’t hold it by yourself, so you drop the weight.”
A haywire generator could also zap the electrical distribution system on the ship, said Capt. Morgan McManus, an instructor at SUNY Maritime College.
When all the main generators fail, ships rely on a backup generator that is typically situated above the water line in another area of the ship, with its own fuel source.
Marine engineers say backup generators provide electricity to run some lights, the navigation system and, crucially, the ship’s steering system. Without at least backup power, the rudder cannot be moved.
Because some lights came back on after the Dali experienced its initial blackout, it appears the backup generator did activate, but only after a roughly one-minute delay. Even then, the lights appeared to go back off, then on again, raising the possibility of a problem with the backup generator.
Homendy of the NTSB said this week that investigators had collected data “consistent with a power outage” but were still trying to determine the extent.
The Coast Guard inspected the Dali when it docked in the Port of New York in September but found no deficiencies on the ship. The Coast Guard did not provide details of what it inspected.
The modernization of ships may have introduced other ways vessels can fail. They have increasingly depended on computers to monitor for troubles and take action when a problem is identified. In some ways, this is a built-in layer of automatic protection: If one component gets overloaded, it can be automatically shut down to prevent further damage. But those shutdowns can cause problems on their own.
“I could not rule out that some computer failure shut all the valves off or shut off pumps that provide the fuel,” Lipian said.

The retirement of Sen. Joe Manchin, a Democrat, in deepred West Virginia has all but ceded one seat to the Republicans, who are targeting a number of vulnerable Democratic incumbents in red or swing states. And if former President Donald Trump wins the White House, one seat is all the GOP needs to flip the chamber. Should the Senate come down to a 50-50 split, the vice president plays tiebreaker.
For Democrats to hold the Senate, the party would most likely need all their incumbents to win; for their candidates to prevail in open seats in Arizona, Michigan and Maryland; and for Biden to be reelected so Vice President Kamala Harris would play the tiebreaker in an evenly split chamber. The party is targeting two Republican-held seats, but those are considered more difficult terrain.
Here are the Senate races to watch in 2024.
Montana: Farmer vs. former Navy SEAL
Sen. Jon Tester, the flat-topped farmer from Big Sandy, Montana, has defied the odds before in his increasingly Republican state, but his Senate victories in 2006, 2012 and 2018 all came in strong Democratic years nationally. His fight for a fourth term will be considerably tougher with Biden at the top of the ticket in a state that Trump won by 16 percentage points in 2020. And Tester will most likely be battling the Republican Party’s selected candidate, Tim Sheehy, a decorated former Navy SEAL and businessperson with the wealth to self-finance his campaign, as well as Trump’s backing.
Tester has the power of incumbency and the authenticity of a third-generation Montanan. In 2012, President Barack Obama received 41.7% of the vote. Tester earned 48.6%. He may need even more ticket-splitters — people who will vote for Trump for president and him for Senate — this November.

Ohio: Sherrod Brown faces the fight of his political life
Besides Tester, Sen. Sherrod Brown is the only other Democrat defending a seat in a solidly Republican state. He, too, has had the advantage of winning in strong Democratic years — 2006, 2012 and 2018 — and like Tester, he has established an image as a stalwart supporter of the working-class voters who will decide the election. As a powerful member of the Senate — he is the chair of the Senate Banking Committee — Brown has amassed a considerable war chest for his reelection campaign.
Unlike Tester, he will be running against a Republican who was not the Ohio GOP establishment’s choice. Bernie Moreno, instead, was the candidate of Trump. The Republican’s sizable fortune will seed fundraising and undergird his campaign against the incumbent, but Democrats boosted Moreno’s candidacy during the primary because they believe his business background will make him vulnerable to attack.

Arizona: Kari Lake, a prominent election denier, tries again
The retirement of Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, the Democratturned-independent iconoclast, has set up a stark Senate race between Rep. Ruben Gallego, a progressive, and Kari Lake, a
former television news anchor and a favorite of Trump’s Make America Great Again movement who lost her race for governor in 2022. The primary in Arizona is July 30, but Gallego and Lake have established themselves as the odds-on favorites to represent their parties in the open Senate contest.
Biden narrowly won Arizona in 2020, and unlike Ohio and Montana, the state promises to be a presidential battleground, potentially warping the Senate race. Lake made a name for herself by falsely claiming that Democrats stole the Arizona election for Biden in 2020, then falsely claiming that her Democratic opponent in the governor’s race, Katie Hobbs, stole her election. Gallego is less well-known outside his Phoenix House district, but as a Latino with a Harvard pedigree and combat experience in Iraq with the Marine Corps, he has a compelling biography.

Michigan: Trump looms large
The full range of Republican Party factions will fight it out for the right to contend for the Senate seat of Sen. Debbie Stabenow, a Democrat who is retiring. There’s Peter Meijer, who voted to impeach Trump just after being sworn into the House, then lost in the 2022 Republican primary to a Trump-backed challenger. Meijer has now said he will vote for Trump in November. There’s Justin Amash, the libertarian-minded former congressman who denounced Trump, faced a fierce backlash that chased him from his party, tried to run for his House seat as an independent, lost and is now running for the Senate again as an anti-Trump Republican. Then there’s Mike Rogers, the mainstream Republican who said the party needed to move on from Trump, then wooed and won Trump’s endorsement for Senate and embraced him.
Rogers has to be considered the favorite in the Aug. 6 primary, but past and present views of the former president will loom over this race all summer. The primary winner will almost certainly face Rep. Elissa Slotkin, a Democrat who has used her national security credentials to win over swing voters in central Michigan since 2018. Her trick will be to keep those centrist voters and energize more liberal voters in and around Detroit. And looming above it all is the presidential contest.

The West Point graduate nearly died in Kandahar, Afghanistan, when a roadside bomb burned him badly and left him permanently scarred. His thin political resume could be a plus, since it will make him difficult to label.
Sen. Jacky Rosen, the incumbent Democrat, isn’t flashy, but the power of incumbency matters, unless Biden’s support in the state craters.

Then Trone used a racial slur at a House hearing, for which he has apologized and said was inadvertent. But several Black Democrats endorsed Angela Alsobrooks, the Prince George’s County executive, before the May 14 primary, as did Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland, the top Democrat on the powerful House Oversight Committee.

After a stellar start to the year for stocks, investors are on guard for potential bumps in the second quarter as they gauge whether the Federal Reserve delivers on an expected interest rate cut by June and turn their focus on the health of upcoming earnings.
The S&P 500 (.SPX), opens new tab ended the first quarter with a gain of more than 10%, its largest first quarter advance since the nearly 13.1% jump in the first quarter of 2019. While so-called Magnificent Seven stocks such as chipmaker Nvidia (NVDA.O), opens new tab and Facebook parent Meta Platforms (META.O), opens new tab provided the bulk of the gains for the quarter, economically-sensitive sectors such as energy and industrials have rallied over the past six weeks.
Whether the rally continues through June will likely depend on the Fed, which has not yet signaled that inflation has come down enough, opens new tab to justify a rate cut. Markets began January with 6 to 7 cuts priced in over the course of 2024, but are now anticipating 3 cuts after signs of resiliency in the US economy increased investor confidence in a so-called soft landing.

Continued growth in the US economy will likely continue the recent broadening of the market rally into cyclical sectors and small-cap stocks as investors search for more attractive valuations, said Jason Alonzo, a portfolio manager on Harbor Capital’s multi-asset strategies team. The Russell 2000 (.RUT), opens new tab index of small-cap stocks ended the first quarter with a 4.8% gain, while the S&P 500 industrials sector rose nearly 11% over the same time.
“Right now the only thing the market cares about is whether the Fed remains in control even if the economy reaccelerates,” Alonzo said. “If that idea was upset somewhat and the Fed had to imply that rate hikes were back on the table, that would be a shock to investors and cause a real issue for all assets.”
Economic readings next week, including ISM manufacturing data, ISM services, and the closely-watched non-farm payrolls report, which economists polled by Reuters expect to show a growth of 198,000 jobs in March.
Investors should not be surprised if the market rally starts to slow as the Fed nears a potential rate cut, noted Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA Research. Since 1989, the S&P 500 has gained an average of 15.5% between the last rate hike of a cycle and the first rate cut, but gained
an average of just 5.4% in the six months following the first rate cut, he said.
Still, strong momentum in the first quarter has historically carried over to the following quarter, said Keith Lerner, Co-Chief Investment Officer at Truist Advisory Services. Of the 11 times that the S&P 500 has posted a total return of 10% or more in the first quarter, the market continued to advance in the second quarter 9 times, with an average gain of
6.2%, he said.
“The market deserves the benefit of the doubt and at this point we think bull market rules apply,” Lerner said. The biggest risk to a continued rally would be a sign that the Fed is considering keeping rates at current levels through the end of the year, which would lead to “dramatic” repricing of risk assets, he said.
The likelihood of a market slowdown will also depend largely on corporate earnings, which came in surprisingly robust and helped push the S&P 500 to a series of record closing highs despite the market repricing interest rate policy, said Emily Roland, Co-Chief Investment Strategist at John Hancock Investment Management.
Amid renewed concerns about his health, Pope Francis presided over Easter Sunday Mass, and with a hoarse but strong voice, he delivered a major annual message that touched on conflicts across the world, with explicit appeals for peace in Israel, the Gaza Strip and Ukraine.
The appearance came after the pope decided to reduce his participation in two major Holy Week events, seemingly at the last minute.
Those decisions seemed to represent a new phase in a more than 11-year papacy throughout which Francis has made the acceptance of the limits that challenge and shape humanity a constant theme. Now, he seems to have entered a period in which he is himself scaling back to observe, and highlight, the limits imposed by his own health constraints, and to conserve strength for the most critical moments.
On Sunday after the Mass, Francis took a prolonged spin in his popemobile around St. Peter’s Square before ascending to a balcony overlooking it to deliver his traditional Easter message.
“Let us not allow the strengthening winds of war to blow on Europe and the Mediterranean,” he said to the tens of thousands of faithful, dignitaries, Swiss Guards and clergy filling the square.
Referring to the stone that had blocked the tomb of Jesus before his resurrection, which Easter celebrates, Francis said that “today, too, great stones, heavy stones, block the hopes of humanity.”
“The stone of war, the stone of humanitarian crises, the stone of human rights violations, the stone of human trafficking and other stones as well,” he said.
The address was a compendium of Francis’ priorities, including the need to ease the suffering of people affected by war, natural disasters and famine in parts of the world he has himself visited. He addressed the plight of migrants, prayed for “consolation and hope” for the poor, and spoke against human trafficking and arms dealing.
But his focus, Francis said, was particularly turned toward the conflicts afflicting the world.

partly because he had part of a lung removed as a young man.
In recent years, Francis’ health has declined. He had a significant portion of his large intestine removed in 2021, and last year he spent time in the hospital to remove potentially dangerous intestinal scar tissue from previous surgeries. Bad knee ligaments have often kept him to a wheelchair, and have required him to use a cane when he is on his feet.
Those ailments came to the fore last week when Francis skipped the homily, a sermon central to the Mass service, on Palm Sunday, and the traditional Good Friday procession at Rome’s Colosseum — an event he missed last year because he was recovering from bronchitis.
But this year, a chair for him had been placed on a platform outside the Colosseum, suggesting that the decision not to attend came at the last minute. The Vatican said Francis had made the decision “to conserve his health” in preparation for events on Saturday and Sunday.
Francis did preside over the Holy Thursday ritual of washing the feet of the faithful at a women’s prison in Rome. He appeared both purposeful and strong, talking with the inmates and giving a chocolate Easter egg to one of their sons. Then on Saturday evening, he presided over a long and solemn Easter Vigil in St. Peter’s Basilica.
On Sunday, Francis waved and seemed in good spirits as people shouted, “Long live the pope,” during his spin around St. Peter’s Square. He then reemerged on the basilica’s balcony, lined with flowers, where he spoke about the toll that conflicts take on civilians.
In what amounted to a survey of the world’s often-forgotten conflicts, the pope spoke about the continuing suffering in Syria because of “a long and devastating war.” He expressed concern for Lebanese people affected by hostilities on their country’s border with Israel. He prayed for an end to the “violence, devastation and bloodshed” in Haiti, an easing of the humanitarian crisis afflicting the Rohingya ethnic minority persecuted in Myanmar, and an end to the suffering in Sudan and in the Sahel region of Africa.
And in Gaza, he said the eyes of suffering children ask: “Why? Why all this death?”
Skyscraper-sized billboards show assault troops in battle gear emerging from a ball of flames. On street posters, soldiers urge passersby to enlist, proclaiming that “victory is in your hands.” Take a seat on a high-speed train, and chances are high that a television will be advertising jobs for drone operators.
Slick recruiting campaigns brimming with nationalist fervor have become ubiquitous in Kyiv, the capital, and other Ukrainian cities in recent months. They are perhaps the most visible sign of a push to replenish Ukrainian troops depleted by more than two years of a brutal war — an effort that experts and officials say is crucial for fending off relentless Russian attacks.
But most of the campaigns are not the work of the country’s political and military leadership. They are the initiatives of troop-starved brigades that have taken matters into their own hands, shunning an official mobilization system that they say is dysfunctional, often drafting people who are unfit and unwilling to fight.
“These campaigns are much more effective because we’re getting exactly the people we need,” said Dmytro Koziatynskyi, a combat medic turned recruiter in the Da Vinci Wolves battalion, which started as a paramilitary wing of a coalition of farright political parties after Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea.
The battalion, which has now been absorbed into Ukraine’s armed forces, is seeking about 500 new members and has advertised jobs as varied as medics, mechanics and sappers, combat engineers who clear minefields. Recruiters conduct lengthy interviews, trying to find positions that match candidates’ skills. People can opt out after a few days of training if they do not like it.
“It’s like a date,” Koziatynskyi said in the battalion’s recently opened recruitment office in central Kyiv, which is covered with logos of three wolves baring their fangs. “We’re trying to explain as much as possible what we are expecting from those people and what they can expect from us.”

which does not allow people to choose their position. Many Ukrainians fear that, if drafted, they will be sent straight into trench warfare without much training. Critics also say the official recruitment drive is too aggressive and mired in Soviet-style bureaucracy and corruption.
Oleksandr Pavliuk, the commander of Ukraine’s ground forces, said last Sunday that criticism of the official mobilization process was unhelpful to the war effort. “We are changing. We see our shortcomings, and we work every day to become better,” he said.
A senior Ukrainian military official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive topic, said that the brigades were free to run their own recruitment campaigns but that the army monitored their activities.
In a war where soldiers are constantly under fire from drones and shells, the risks of fighting in front-line units like the Da Vinci Wolves remain very high.
But the brigade, like many others, has tried to allay people’s fears of what it means to join a military unit and appeal to their patriotism, using a public relations campaign that has been far more extensive than the government’s few drab recruiting posters.
“It’s like a market,” said Myroslav Hai, an officer in charge of civil-military relations in the Ivan Bohun special forces brigade, which has fought on the front lines. “You must try to find people with marketing methods.”
Most of the brigades appear to support their advertising and recruiting activities by crowdsourcing appeals for labor and equipment. The Da Vinci Wolves brigade, for example, said it relied on a network of supporters to design and produce its ads and that its office was provided free of charge by the Kyiv City Council.
The need to replenish the Ukrainian armed forces has been evident for months. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently said that 31,000 soldiers had been killed in the war, a tally that most likely understates the true toll. Military commanders have urged him to increase the number of conscripts to make up for the losses and withstand another year of fierce fighting.

Meanwhile, brigade officers have complained that the conscripts recruited by the official system are often too old, in poor health and unmotivated. Alina Mykhailova, an officer in the Da Vinci Wolves battalion, said that of the 200 conscripts the brigade had received, only 25 showed a desire to fight.
“Our task is to recruit volunteers faster so that we get fewer of those people who are absolutely unmotivated,” Mykhailova said.
Sitting at a desk, Evhenii Hryhoriev, a recruiter, asked Oleg Greshko, a thin 20-year-old with a small goatee, who walked into the battalion’s recruitment office on a recent afternoon, what he wanted to do. “Infantry,” Greshko replied quickly.
Another recruit, Maryna Kovalenko, who has been training with the battalion and plans to work as a clerk, said she had been drawn by the unit’s individualized approach. “Here, you have the opportunity to choose what suits you best and talk about it,” she said.
Many brigades have adopted this approach, mindful that as the war drags on, people want to “choose and control their future in the army,” said Vladyslav Greziev, the head of Lobby X, one of Ukraine’s largest online recruitment platforms, which has created a special section for military jobs.
Greziev said that some 500 army units had posted jobs on the platform, with around 3,200 open positions and nearly 80,000 applications received. Candidates are invited to find a position that fits them by clicking on thematic hashtags that narrow down the search.
Brigades advertise many noncombat roles, such as a cook for military intelligence and a digital designer in an assault brigade, and have also promised good equipment and better training than conscripts receive.
Koziatynskyi said that “there is some competition” among units to attract the best recruits. He said that the Third Assault Brigade, a branch of Ukraine’s special forces, was “winning for now,” partly thanks to its strong presence on social media.
Semen Gagarin, a 33-year-old manager at a honey-producing company, said he did not think the campaign would change the minds of those who refuse to serve.
But he acknowledged, standing by a recruitment poster in central Kyiv, that “it puts more pressure on everyone” and can convince people who have been hesitant about enlisting. Several friends at his gym have decided to join the Third Assault Brigade, he said.
“This is our chance to get motivated people,” Koziatynskyi said. “Everyone wants them.”

On this holy weekend, one man is taking the Resurrection personally.
Donald Trump is presenting himself as the Man on the Cross, tortured for our sins. “I consider it a great badge of courage,” he tells crowds. “I am being indicted for you.” Instead of Christlike redemption, he promises Lucifer-like retribution if resurrected.
In January, he put up a video on Truth Social about how he is a messenger from God, “a shepherd to mankind.”
Trump is, as the nuns who taught me used to say, “a bold, brazen piece.” He is a miserable human who cheated on his wives, cheats at golf, cheats at politics, incites violence, targets judges and their families, and looked on, pleased, as thugs threatened to hang his actually pious vice president.
Yet more and more, Trump is wallowing in his Messiah complex.

Trump posted a promotional video claiming that “Christians are under siege” and vowing to “protect content that is proGod.” He held up the Bible — recalling the appalling moment in 2020 when Ivanka handed him a Bible from her designer bag and he clutched it in front of St. John’s Church, opposite the White House, moments after the police tear-gassed protesters and journalists in adjacent Lafayette Square at a demonstration about George Floyd’s murder.
“All Americans need a Bible in their home, and I have many,” Trump barked. “It’s my favorite book.” Maybe the Bible has replaced that Hitler book Trump’s ex-wife said he kept by his bed. But it’s all a scam. Running for president is about enriching himself, just as when he peddled NFTs, steaks, ties, suits, bath towels, vodka, water, office chairs, Trump University and mugshot mugs. He even sold pieces of the suit he was wearing when he took the mug shot.
“I want to have a lot of people have it,” Trump said of his Bible. “You have to have it for your heart, for your soul.”
Just what the world needs: a soul cleanse with a grifter Bible, where the profits could well be going to pay legal costs in trials about breaking commandments: bearing false witness to try to steal democracy, coveting a porn star, then paying the star hush money to keep quiet about the sex.
What could be more Elmer Gantry than that? As Sinclair Lewis wrote about his corrupt, power-hungry, narcissistic, womanizing preacher, “He had, in fact, got everything from the church and Sunday school, except, perhaps, any longing whatever for decency and kindness and reason.”
Religious snake-oil salesmen have a storied history in American literature and films, from Flannery O’Connor’s “Wise Blood” to Peter Bogdanovich’s beloved movie “Paper Moon,” about a conniving Bible salesman and his small helper. But it’s shocking when the charlatan might be in the Oval.

As Donie O’Sullivan reported for CNN, no sooner had the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed in Baltimore than a bunch of crazy conspiracy tales blossomed about terrorism, DEI, Obama, Israel and Ukraine.
Declining faith in religion and rising faith in conspiracies create fertile ground for a faker like Trump. If the profane pol is reelected, we’ll all reap the whirlwind.

‘24 Hours with Gaspar’
A taut revenge action fable, Indonesian director Yosep Anggi Noen’s “24 Hours with Gaspar” features scintillating choreography. For years Gaspar (Reza Rahadian) has been searching for his childhood best friend, Kirana (Shofia Shireen), who was kidnapped and sold by her sex-trafficking father, Wan Ali (Iswadi Pratama). To find answers, Gaspar, a detective, works with a fight club owner named Agnes (Shenina Cinnamon), a strategy that works well until the device that helps Gaspar’s heart function is broken in an electrifying fight, eloquently lit to capture the silhouettes of limber bodies swinging to deadly effect. Now he has only 24 hours to live.
The second half of Noen’s film is a heist flick: Gaspar cobbles together an unlikely team to rob Wan Ali’s jewelry store where a legendary black box capable of granting any wish is rumored to reside. The film culminates in a rugged all-out brawl at a fight club, which is crosscut with Gaspar confronting Wan Ali in a fight that’s emblematic of the film’s existential poeticism. Spanning 71 minutes, “Anti-Drug Operation,” by Chinese director Yan Yuchao, packs a big punch in a small package. After the sudden murder of their mother, two young brothers take separate paths: One becomes the drug-busting cop Captain Lin (Li Bin); the other, Lin Lang (Lang Feng), becomes a drug lord. The plot follows the brothers as adults, as Captain Lin tries to save his sibling before the dangerous gangster Zhong Hu (Xiao Mi) — the man who killed their mother — murders him.
Despite their different moral codes, the brothers share a bond that eventually puts both in danger, leading to a major raid. Slowed to the speed of molasses, a scene at a rural narcotics lab becomes a site for high drama. Yan shoots oblique angles that accentuate the fighting power of Captain Lin and Lin Lang to devastating effect. (Stream it on Hi-Yah!)
‘Dr. Cheon and the Lost Talisman’
The grandson of a murdered shaman, Dr. Cheon (Gang Dong-won) has spent years searching for the evil sorcerer Beom-cheon (Huh Joon-ho) who not only took his grandfather’s life, but also murdered Dr. Cheon’s brother. A magical spell keeps the killer chained inside a cave where his cult does his bidding. With an assistant, In-bae (Lee Dong-hwi), Dr. Cheon travels to a remote village to exorcise the younger sister of Yoo-kyung (Esom), a woman capable of seeing spirits. When it becomes clear that Beom-cheon is behind the possession, Dr. Cheon teams up with Yoo-kyung to finally take revenge.
Korean director Kim Seong-sik’s “Dr. Cheon and the Lost Talisman” is an arresting action noir, whose highly observant protagonist is an intriguing blend of Constantine and Sherlock Holmes. The action is wonderfully melded with the film’s ghost story elements. The high point occurs when Dr.
Cheon battles Beom-cheon’s magic in a sword fight set to a soaring electric guitar score that appears to defy the gravitational rules of the real world. (Rent or buy on most major platforms.)
‘One-Percent Warrior’
I’m not sure I’ve seen an action film quite like Japanese writer/director Yudai Yamaguchi’s meta take on the genre. “One-Percent Warrior” follows Toshiro Takuma (Tak Sakaguchi), a previously famous action star who, 10 years ago, proclaimed he would make the realest action movie ever. With his career now on life support, he’s venturing with his apprentice, Akira (Sho Aoyagi), to an abandoned zinc factory on a secluded island to finally shoot his film. There he frees Maria (Rumika Fukuda), a girl held hostage by a gang searching for two tons of cocaine hidden by her father, who is now dead.
For most people, this scenario would be a nightmare. But for Toshiro, it’s a dream come true. He finally gets to play the hero again by practicing his brand of martial arts. Through every scene Yamaguchi trusts his actors to execute his choreography, relying on fluid movements, open compositions and long takes that fulfill Toshiro’s desire for authentic action. ‘The Pig, the Snake and the Pigeon’
Sometimes it feels good to root for a bad guy. For four years, the feared hit man Chen Kui-lin (Ethan Juan) has been in hiding after murdering an underworld boss. Yo, EDGARDO ELÍAS VARGAS SANTANA, ALGUACIL AUXILIAR PLACA #193, Alguacil del Tribunal de Primera Instancia, Sala de Bayamón, a los demandados, acreedores y al público en general con interés sobre la propiedad que más adelante se describe, y al público en general, por la presente CERTIFICO, ANUNCIO y HAGO CONSTAR: Que el día 29 DE ABRIL DE 2024, A LAS 10:45 DE LA MAÑANA, mi oficina, sita en el Tribunal de Primera Instancia, Sala Superior de Bayamón, Bayamón, Puerto Rico, procederé a vender en Pública Subasta, al mejor postor, la propiedad inmueble que más adelante se describe y cuya venta en pública subasta se ordenó por la vía ordinaria mediante Sentencia dictada en el caso de epígrafe, la cual se notificó y archivó en autos el día 15 de noviembre de 2023. Los autos y todos los documentos correspondientes al procedimiento incoado, estarán de manifiesto en la Secretaría durante horas laborables. Que en caso de no producir remate ni adjudicación en la primera subasta a celebrarse, se celebrará una SEGUNDA SUBASTA para la venta de la susodicha propiedad, el 6 DE MAYO DE 2024, A LAS 10:45 DE LA MAÑANA; y en caso de no producir remate ni adjudicación, se celebrará una TERCERA SUBASTA el día 13 DE ABRIL DE 2024, A LAS 10:45 DE LA MAÑANA; en mi oficina sita en el lugar antes indicado. liberado por la Secretaría del Tribunal de Primera Instancia, Sala Superior de Bayamón, en el caso de epígrafe con fecha de 6 de marzo de 2024, procederé a vender en pública subasta y al mejor postor, todo derecho, título e interés que tenga la parte demandada de epígrafe en el inmueble que se describe a continuación: RÚSTICA: Lote radicado en el Barrio Cibuco, del término municipal de Corozal, Puerto Rico, con una cabida de mil ciento cinco punto noventa setenta y seis metros cuadrados. En lindes; por el NORTE, en cincuenta metros treinta centímetros con el Lote número tres segregado de la misma finca principal; por el SUR, en cincuenta y cinco punto treinta metros con el Lote número cinco segregado también de la finca principal de la cual este se segrega; por el ESTE, en veinte metros con la Carretera Estatal número ochocientos diez y ocho; y por el OESTE, en veinte metros con la finca principal de la cual se segrega. Finca número 4,293, inscrita al folio 100 del tomo 88 de Corozal, Registro de la Propiedad de Puerto Rico, Sección de Barranquitas. La subasta se llevará a cabo para satisfacer, hasta donde alcance, el importe de las cantidades adeudadas a la parte demandante conforme a la sentencia dictada a su favor, a saber: de $101,608.35 en concepto de principal con interés al 6.000% anual, los cuales acumulan a un total de $271,675.96 a la fecha de 31 de agosto de 2023 los cuales continúan acumulándose, así como la cantidad líquida estipulada en los documentos del préstamo para costas, gastos y honorarios de abogado en caso de reclamación judicial y que correspondan a intereses y cargos por demora posterior a dicha fecha, y la suma de $26,400.00 equivalente al 10% de la suma principal original pactada, estipulada para costas, gastos y honorarios de abogado; más recargos acumulados hasta la fecha en que se pague la deuda; más cualquiera suma de dinero por concepto de contribuciones, primas de seguro hipotecario y riesgo, así como cualesquiera otras sumas pactadas en la escritura de hipoteca, todas cuyas sumas están líquidas y exigibles. La hipoteca a ejecutarse en el caso de epígrafe fue constituida mediante la escritura número 82 otorgada el día 7 de diciembre de 2009, en Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, ante el Notario Público Roberto Palou Bosch y consta inscrita al folio 120 del tomo 300 de Corozal, finca número 4,293, Registro de la Propiedad de Barranquitas, Sección de
Barranquitas. Por la presente se notifica a los acreedores que tengan inscritos o anotados sus derechos sobre los bienes hipotecados con posterioridad a la inscripción del crédito del ejecutante o acreedores de cargos o derechos reales que los hubiesen pospuesto a la hipoteca del actor y a los dueños, poseedores, tenedores de o interesados en títulos transmisibles por endoso o al portador garantizados hipotecariamente con posterioridad al crédito del actor que se celebrarán las subastas en las fechas, horas y sitios señalados para que puedan concurrir a la subasta si les conviniere o se les invita a satisfacer antes del remate el importe del crédito, de sus intereses, otros cargos y las costas y honorarios de abogado asegurados quedando subrogados en los derechos del acreedor ejecutante. Que la cantidad mínima de licitación en la primera subasta del inmueble antes descrito será la suma de $264,000.00 según se establece en la escritura de hipoteca antes relacionada. En caso de que el inmueble a ser subastado no fuera adjudicado en su primera subasta se ordena la celebración de una segunda subasta de dicho inmueble, en la cual, la cantidad mínima será una equivalente a 2/3 parte de aquella, o sea la suma de $176,000.00; desierta también la segunda subasta de dicho inmueble, se ordena la celebración de una tercera subasta en la cual, la cantidad mínima será la mitad del precio pactado para la primera subasta, es decir la suma de $132,000.00. The top deck of Dodger Stadium is far from the action but may have the best view in baseball. Straight ahead are the San Gabriel Mountains. During night games, as the sun goes down, the sky glows pink. Down below, the full choreography of the game is on display, offering a panoramic view shunned by the movie stars and moguls who fill the sections behind home plate.
And on Thursday morning, fans heading to those cheap seats passed a new addition to the ballpark: an 8-foot stone lantern given as a gift to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1960s by a famous Japanese sports columnist, Sotaro Suzuki. He helped draw the Dodgers to Japan for a goodwill tour in 1956, two years before the team left Brooklyn for Los Angeles.
For Kimi Ego, a longtime Dodgers fan, the lantern has a special meaning, and she cried when she saw it: Her father was a close friend of Suzuki’s. For years, before her father died in 2000, he took care of the stone lantern, which was then tucked into a hillside beyond the outfield bleachers, and trimmed the plants and shrubs surrounding it.

“Tears of joy,” said Ego, a retired schoolteacher who has been coming to Dodgers games since the 1960s. “My father worked so hard maintaining the garden.”
The monument pays homage to the team’s past and present.
In December, the Dodgers signed the world’s biggest baseball star, two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani, to the richest contract in sports history, $700 million over 10 years. For good measure, the team signed another Japanese superstar, pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto, for $325 million over a dozen years — the most lucrative contract ever for a pitcher.
Last Thursday, Ohtani’s impact was apparent before he even stepped on the field: New advertisements for Asian companies — an airline, a retail chain, yogurt drinks, skin care products — dotted the stadium. One local newscaster — in pregame coverage that began when most Angelenos were having breakfast or were stuck in traffic — compared Ohtani to Taylor Swift, saying that the Dodgers were baseball’s version
of the Eras Tour. And a new addition to the stadium menu is a Japanese fried octopus fritter being promoted as one of Ohtani’s favorite dishes.
In a sprawling region connected by freeways, where traffic patterns dictate the pace of daily life and where it’s easy to feel disconnected, the Dodgers bring people together. The team regularly tops the major leagues in attendance, with close to 50,000 people packed into the stands each night. On the field, the team has enjoyed more than a decade of regular-season excellence, almost always followed by disappointment in October — with the exception of a World Series title won after the pandemic-shortened season of 2020.
This year, everyone seems to believe, will be different.
“After last season’s letdown, we were bummed about it,” said Manny Palomo, a season-ticket holder who asked his boss three months ago if he could take Thursday off. “And then we got Ohtani, and it just rejuvenated the fan base.”
This being Hollywood, though, a dramatic plot twist was inserted into the Dodgers story: Last week, as the team played two regular-season games against the San Diego Padres in Seoul, South Korea, news reports emerged linking Ohtani and his longtime interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, to a gambling scandal.
The first take suggested that Mizuhara had racked up millions in debt to an illegal bookmaker and that Ohtani had bailed his friend out. But the story quickly shifted, with Mizuhara being accused of stealing from Ohtani’s bank account to pay the bookie.
Before Ohtani had played a game that counted in front of his new fan base, Major League Baseball and the IRS announced investigations into the matter. Then, on Monday afternoon as the team prepared to play a late spring training game, Ohtani finally spoke.
He said he had never bet on sports, much less baseball,
and had been betrayed by Mizuhara — who, he said, “has been lying the whole time.”
“To summarize how I’m feeling right now, I’m just beyond shocked,” he said, reading from a prepared statement in front of about 75 journalists, many from Japan, who crowded into an interview room in the bowels of the stadium. “It’s really hard to verbalize how I’m feeling at this point.”
His demeanor was serene, straightforward, emphatic and detailed, even as many questions remained unanswered. That was good enough for his teammates and his manager.
“I heard everything I needed to hear, and I know the players feel the same way,” Dave Roberts, the Dodgers’ manager, said.
For all his global fame, Ohtani, a cartoonishly powerful slugger who is also an all-star pitcher — something the game hasn’t seen since Babe Ruth — is largely a mystery, even though he played six seasons with the Los Angeles Angels, the region’s also-ran team. An impression of him, a myth perhaps, as a baseball monk — he was known in Japan as a yakyu shonen, or a baseball boy who eats, sleeps and breathes the sport — has grown over the years, and that reputation followed him to America.
The crowd, a sellout with 52,667 people, roared when Ohtani was introduced before the game by actor Bryan Cranston, walking out past the center field fence onto a blue carpet. (“I felt the walk was a little long, but the ceremony was well done,” Ohtani said after the game.) Everyone was on their feet when he stepped into the box for his first at-bat and smashed a double to right field. And they cheered his aggressiveness when he was tagged out trying to stretch that double to a triple.
For Dodgers fans, the day ended as spectacularly as it had begun: Ohtani added another hit, ending the day 2 for 3 as the Dodgers beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-1.
Eric Karros, a former first baseman who hit more home runs than any Dodger since the team moved to Los Angeles and whose son is a Dodgers minor leaguer, called opening day a “celebration” and a “spiritual beginning” that transcends merely playing a game that finally counts in the standings.
“It’s the beginning,” he said. “You are ready to start. Everything is at zero. It’s fresh. A clean slate.”
For those who love baseball, or play the game, opening day is a time for nostalgia.
“I think it just reminds me of growing up and playing Little League,” said Palomo, the season-ticket holder in the top deck. “I just get to relive that.”
For Miguel Rojas, a veteran utility infielder, it was during the trip to Seoul when he fully absorbed the Dodgers’ global fame. Crowds greeted the team wherever they went, from the airport to the hotel to the ballpark.
“It’s going to feel different throughout the whole year,” he said, “because we’re going to have a lot of cameras, a lot of attention.”
