New Ro teen gets 19 years for shooting of Julian Oliveros Westchester County District Attorney Miriam E. Rocah announced today that an 18-year-old was sentenced to 19 years of incarceration for the January 2022 fatal shooting of 16-year-old Julian Oliveros in New Rochelle. Rocah said: “Today’s sentence is a sobering reminder that gun violence knows no boundaries, and it has irrevocable consequences for victims, their families and communities. We must stop guns from getting in the hands of young people.” The defendant, Tommy Rivera of New Rochelle, was prosecuted as an adolescent offender, and pleaded guilty on March 17 to Manslaughter in the First Degree, a

felony. He will also be subject to five years of post-release supervision upon his release. On Jan. 25, 2022, at approximately 3:38 p.m., the defendant, who was 16 years old at the time, used an un-serialized 9mm semi-automatic pistol—a ghost gun—to shoot the victim four times, striking him in the lower back, knee, neck and shoulder, as he walked on Fourth Street in New Rochelle. The incident was captured on surveillance video. The victim was transported to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, where he died that day. The New Rochelle Police Department arrested the defendant shortly

after the incident near Glen Place and Beechwood Avenue in New Rochelle. Police recovered the murder weapon from the defendant’s waistband, and subsequently recovered tools used to build ghost guns in his home. Ghost guns are untraceable, fully-functioning illegal firearms that can be easily assembled at home with parts purchased online and are designed to evade certain gun laws. In a statement in Spanish read in court, the victim’s mother said: (translated) “On the evening of January 25, 2022, the life of my home changed forever...a part of our soul dies with my son...what sustains us is the solace that comes from recalling our time together.”

Westchester County Tourism reached $2B in 2022 County Executive George Latimer is pleased to announce that Westchester County visitor spending reached $2 billion in 2022, following a challenging period for the tourism industry. The Tourism Economics report released by New York State (NYS) ESD shows Westchester represented 43% of all visitor spending in the Hudson Valley region, significantly contributing to New York State’s visitor volumes and spending that year. Key findings of the report include: • Westchester’s travel and tourism remained a significant driver of the economy with visitor spending reaching $2 billion. This was driven by increases in Retail (+39%), Lodging (+27%) and Food & Beverage (+23). • Westchester County ranks fifth in visitor spending in all of New York State. • Westchester County saw a 99% recovery from the pandemic loss. • The County wages generated by visitors amounted to at $1.1 billion, the most significant in the region. • Local taxes (hotel occupancy, sales and property) and

state taxes generated by the industry were $243.5 million. This represents $668 in local and state tax savings for every county household. Westchester County Tourism & Film Director Natasha Caputo said: “In collaboration with our local partners, we were able to illuminate Westchester as a safe and attractive destination for visitors seeking an experience beyond the everyday. The 2022 results show that our tourism industry is helping Westchester County recover, is creating meaningful job opportunities for residents and is a vital part of our County’s prosperity.” President of the Westchester Hotel Association Sean Meade said: “In the throes of the unimaginable, our hotel community rallied to rebound, to create a vibrant guest experience in Westchester County and to do our part to support the region’s tourism sector. There is work ahead as we look to draw important group business to Westchester, and the members of the Westchester Hotel Association are working in concert to grow that important element of Westchester County tourism.”

Bronxville students earn Princeton Model U.N. Conference awards Twenty-five members of the Bronxville High School Model United Nations club participated in the Princeton Model United Nations Conference, held at Princeton University from Nov. 16-19. Several of the students earned awards at the prestigious conference. The students took on the roles of United Nations ambassadors from various countries or specific individuals from historic reenactments to debate a variety of issues. They

participated in various committees, drafted resolutions, made alliances with other delegates and advocated their positions. As a result of their outstanding performances, the following students earned awards: • Kiran Waggoner earned the verbal honorable mention for his work on the Mexican general election in the crisis committee. • Sophia Ikiri and Ariana Cutler earned a best position paper award for representing

Canada in the general assembly’s legal committee. • Marian Schafer earned an honorable mention best delegate award for representing the United Kingdom in the specialized United Nations Security Council committee. • Charlotte Brandes and Lucy Thiessen earned an outstanding delegate award for representing the United Kingdom in the general assembly’s United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) com-

mittee. “I’m always so proud and impressed with Bronxville students’ willingness to engage in the conference as thoroughly as they do,” said teacher Steve Klurfeld, adviser of the Model UN club. “The schedule for this conference calls for eight hours of meetings on some days, which is probably more than most adults could deal with. The level of discussion and knowledge of the issues being evaluated is very high.”

On the road again It’s been a long time, Syracuse, but I’ll be seeing you soon. This weekend marks the official end to the high school sports fall season, as the top football teams from New York will head up to the JMA Dome in Syracuse to compete for the state titles. And while I’m looking forward to taking in a few days of what promises to be thrilling football action, I can’t help but think; it’s been a while since I’ve made my way to the “Dome.” Heck, back then, it wasn’t even called the JMA Wireless Dome, going by the more familiar—at least to me—Carrier Dome sobriquet. And to be honest, I miss it. Going to the Dome used to be a yearly pilgrimage for me, and it’s not hard to understand why. For a long time, Section 1—especially the teams in our coverage area—used to be a mainstay in title games, and my first few years with the paper were filled with countless post-Thanks-

giving trips up north to catch the culmination of the football season. Oddly enough, the last time I set foot in the dome was back in 2013; with the last game I saw there being a 28-27 thriller between Chenago Forks and Rye Neck for the Class C title. New Rochelle brought home the last state title for the Review teams back in 2019, but I wasn’t able to make the trip up that year, possibly due to previous personal obligations. But now, I’ll be up there again to see Class B Rye—and two other Section 1 teams—try to etch their names into the record books. And for Rye, it’s been an interesting journey, one that’s made it fun to be along for the ride. Four weeks into the season, the banged-up Garnets sat at 2-2, having lost to reigning champion Pleasantville and bitter rival Harrison. But Rye got healthy—and hot—at the right time, going on a tear to win nine straight games to find themselves on the precipice of the program’s first state crown since 2008. Of course, it won’t be easy, with the 2022 state champions from Maine-Endwell standing in their way, but if the Garnets have

proven anything this year, its that they rise to the occasion more often than not. So I’ll hit the road on Saturday, maybe check out a barbecue joint on Saturday night, get a good night sleep and prepare for the pinnacle of the football season on Sunday.

It’s been a wild ride thus far, and I’m just happy to be hitting the road to see its conclusion.

It has been a while since Rye has found itself in contention for a state title, but on Dec. 3, the Garnets will once again make the trip up to Syracuse to take the field at the JMA Wireless Dome with the chance to add even more hardware to the school’s trophy case. Rye’s march through the state tournament continued on Saturday, as the Garnets were able to overcome an early turnovers and a 7-0 deficit to decisively top Ravena 24-10 in the Class B semifinals. Though the two teams seemed evenly matched at the outset, Rye was able to turn the tide thanks to a

42-yard field goal by Henry Shoemaker that gave them a 17-10 lead heading into halftime and a long touchdown completion from AJ Miller to Tucker Hess to open the third quarter and put the Garnets firmly in control. Hess, who finished with eight catches for 127 yards on the day, said that Rye’s resilience has been a calling card this year, as the Garnets fought back from a 2-2 start to the year to win nine straight games and earn a trip to the state championship game. “Getting that score was everything, it really helped us set the tone in the second half,” said Hess. “This feels amazing; throughout the season, we’ve suffered some injuries, but we bounce back and call on different guys to step up.” Miller battled back from two early interceptions to finish with 284 passing yards on 19 completions, throwing for two touchdowns to fuel the Garnet offense. But he said that it was Rye’s play on the defensive end—the Garnets shut out the Indians in the second half—that secured the semifinal round win. “Our defense has been unreal all year long and

today they didn’t change anything,” said Miller. “They shut them down and that allowed our playmakers to go out and make plays.” Rye’s next—and final opponent—will be reigning state champions Maine-

Endwell, whom the Garnets will see at noon on Dec. 3 in the JMA Wireless Dome. This will be Rye’s first appearance in a state title game since the program won back-to-back championships in 2007 and 2008,

something that Miller said is not lost on the group heading up to the Dome this weekend. “Rye’s one of the best football programs in the state, but recently, we’ve ended up falling just short of

that ultimate goal,” he said. “So to be able to make it back feels fantastic, but we know the job isn’t finished yet.” Contact: sports@hometwn.com
