• ONLY Bicyclists, in-line skaters, scooters, walkers and joggers are allowed; no unauthorized motor vehicles are allowed.

• Unauthorized motor vehicles, including electric bikes and scooters, are not permitted.

• Walkers, joggers and slower wheeled traffic must use the right lane; faster wheeled traffic must use the left lane.

• New York state law requires helmets for children under age 14, including those riding in bike trailers; helmets are strongly recommended for all wheeled participants.

• New York state law prohibits children under age 1 from riding on bicycles or in a separate seat.

• All headsets are prohibited. This includes but is not limited to music devices and hands-free cell phones.

• No skateboarding allowed.

• No dogs allowed.

• Bicyclists must obey the posted parkway speed limit of 40 mph.

• Children riding in strollers must be strapped in at all times.

• Children under age 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

• All participants must be off the parkway by 1:50 p.m.

On Thursday, April 27, the Westchester County Office of Economic Development (OED) hosted an exclusive tour of the County’s dynamic life sciences cluster for members of New York City’s economic development and life sciences community. The tour, which featured speakers from BioInc@NYMC, Burke Neurological Institute, Clarapath, Leviant, New York Medical College, Regeneron, Retia Medical, Sapience Therapeutics, Westchester County Biosciences Accelerator and Westchester Medical Center, provided guests an opportunity to meet the groundbreakers and innovators who are driving Westchester’s life sciences sector forward.

Westchester County Executive George Latimer said: “Westchester is home to a thriving Life Science sector from globally leading organizations, to noted innovators and ground-breaking start-ups. There is a reason why so many leaders are looking at Westchester and trust that this is where they will be able to thrive and change the world through their science and research. Metro-North hits milestone ridership

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Wednesday that the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad set post-pandemic ridership records on Tuesday, May 9. LIRR carried approximately 221,290 riders on Tuesday, marking the 27th time the railroad has eclipsed 200,000 riders in a single day since the opening of Grand Central Madison. Metro-North hit the 200,000-rider mark for the first time since March 6, 2020, carrying approximately 205,069 riders on Tuesday, smashing the previous record of 195,086 on April 19.

“We have continued to make historic investments in our commuter rail services and the MTA - the life-blood of New York City,” Hochul said. “From opening Grand Central Madison to securing more than $1 billion in sustained funding for the MTA, I am committed to expanding service and bringing riders back to the nation’s largest transit system.”

The LIRR records follow a 41 percent service increase in February 2023 that accompanied the

opening of Grand Central Madison. Prior to the full opening of Grand Central Madison on February 27, the LIRR had exceeded 200,000 riders in a single day only twice since the beginning of 2023.

The Metro-North record follows a strong month of April, in which Metro-North set post-pandemic ridership records on consecutive days on April 18 and 19. The railroad also had a record-high level for Monday ridership, carrying 180,789 riders the day before yesterday, nearly 7,000 more than the previous best Monday on April 24.

MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber said, “The ridership records keep coming, and they validate everything the MTA has been doing to make the commuter rails an attractive option—more frequent service, fare discounts, and with Grand Central Madison, an incredible new facility and a shorter commute.”

Metro-North Railroad President and LIRR Interim President Catherine Rinaldi said, “While discretionary travel has been an important

part of the railroads’ recovery, it’s clear that in-office work is returning, and we are thrilled to see both railroads shattering their previous weekday post-COVID ridership records. With the opening of Grand Central Madison, the expansion of CityTicket, and the recent introduction of the Combo Ticket, it is clear that the railroads are simply the best and most convenient way to move around the region.”

The ridership records on both railroads come on the heels of their best month since 2020. Preliminary ridership statistics indicate that in April, both the LIRR and Metro-North carried a combined 9.46 million riders and posted their highest average weekday ridership since the pandemic began.

On an average weekday in April, the LIRR carried 200,915 customers. Grand Central Madison has already passed major iconic facilities like Boston South Station and Chicago Union Station in the rankings of busiest commuter railroad facilities. On April 24, the

LIRR reinstated full-time, yearround service at Mets-Willets Point station to encourage riders to take mass transit to Citi Field events and provide Queens residents with an alternative travel option.

Metro-North carried 180,174 riders on an average weekday in April.

On April 18, Metro-North reached a pandemic-era ridership record with 194,549 customers. The record was broken a day later, on April 19, when Metro-North carried 195,086 riders. The consecutive ridership records culminated in the railroad reaching its three-day ridership high since the pandemic of 193,111.

The arts take over Port Chester at the inaugural Port Chester Arts Festival

On Saturday, June 3, join the Port Chester Community for the Inaugural Port Chester Arts Festival, a day-long celebration of the arts! Polish festival to kickoff 2023 cultural celebrations

The 44th Annual Polish Heritage Day will kick off the 2023 Cultural Heritage Celebrations on Sunday, May 21, noon to 6 p.m. at Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla.

The festival will showcase Polish American cultural exhibits, polka music and dancing featuring a children’s polish school performance. Meet the 2023 Parade Marshall and Miss Polonia, sample authentic Polish foods and baked goods while browsing a variety of vendors selling Polish crafts.

Swim Across America hosts summer kickoff at Orienta

Ninety supporters, beneficiaries, board and committee members of Swim Across America’s Long Island Sound Chapter (SAALIS) gathered recently at Orienta Beach Club to officially kick off the organization’s 31st fundraising season. SAA-LIS, which raises funds for local cancer research, clinical trials and treatment programs through its pool and open-water swims, expects this summer to exceed $25 million in total donations raised since its inception in 1992. Proceeds from the swims support Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center; Columbia University Cancer Center, Cancer Support Team and Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Kleinman’s mother was diagnosed with cancer later that year and six months later, Shapiro’s mother was also diagnosed with cancer. The daughters dealt with their mothers’ illnesses together, Kleinman’s mom died seven months after her diagnosis at age 58. Shapiro’s mom died a month later at 62. After suffering this tragic loss Kleinman and Shapiro decided to team up with a local cancer non-profit to honor

their mother’s legacy and that is when they found Gilda’s Club Westchester. are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action and sustained by community.

Gilda’s Club Westchester provides individual counseling, support groups, workshops, education and social activities allfree of charge. Their innovative programs are an essential complement to medical care available to those living with a cancer diagnosis, their family and friends, and those who have lost a loved one to cancer.

Gilda’s Club Westchester is sustained through fundraising, grants, private donations, and corporate contributions so they rely on events and major donors to keep their red doors open. To date, the Mah Jongg and Canasta Invitational has raised close to a million dollars.

Shall the Board of Education (the “Board”) of the Harrison Central School District (“District”) be authorized to establish a new capital reserve fund pursuant to Section 3651 of the Education Law of the State of New York, to be known as the “2023 Capital Reserve Fund,” for the purpose of financing, in whole or in part, the cost of authorized alterations, construction and/or reconstruction of District facilities, buildings and/or additions, including related site work, health and safety improvements, handicap accessibility improvements, masonry renovation, plumbing upgrades, electrical upgrades, mechanical upgrades, technology upgrades, telephone upgrades, roof replacement on District buildings, door replacement, window replacement, turf replacement, fencing, including but not limited to paving, curbs and sidewalks, renovation/reconstruction of interior and exterior instructional spaces, abatement of hazardous materials and/or the purchase of furnishings/equipment, in an ultimate amount of $8 million dollars (plus interest earned thereon), having a probable term of ten (10) years and be authorized to raise $8 million dollars to fund such capital reserve fund in the current or future years through various sources including, but not limited to, state aid reimbursement, cost saving measures resulting in unexpended funds or unappropriated fund balance and other legally available funds of the District?

The qualified voters will fill the following vacancies:

a. The office of Kelly Mulvoy Mangan, a member of the Board of Education, which term expires on June 30, 2023, for a new term commencing July 1, 2023 and expiring on June 30, 2026.

b. The office of Robert C. Sullivan, Jr., a member of the Board of Education, which term expires on June 30, 2023, for a new term commencing July 1, 2023 and expiring on June 30, 2026.

c. The office of Melinda (Lindy) Wolverton, a member of the Board of Education, which term expires on June 30, 2023, for a new term commencing July 1, 2023 and expiring on June 30, 2026.

Each vacancy shall be considered a separate and specific office and a separate petition is required to nominate a candidate for each office. The petition shall be directed to the District Clerk, shall be signed by at least 25 qualified voters of the District, shall state the residence address of each signer, the name and residence address of the candidate, and shall describe the specific vacancy on the Board of Education for which the candidate is nominated which description shall include at least the length of the term of office and the name of the last incumbent, if any. Forms complying with these requirements may be obtained from the Office of the District Clerk, 50 Union Avenue, Harrison, NY between the hours of 8:30 A.M. and 3:30 P.M., prevailing time, Monday through Friday. Petitions are due not later than on April 17, 2023 at 5:00 P.M.

NOTICE IS FURTHER GIVEN that applications for Absentee Ballots may be obtained at the Office of the District Clerk, 50 Union Avenue, Harrison, NY. Written requests for absentee ballots must be made at least 7 days and not more than 30 days prior to the Annual School District Meeting, May 16, 2023. If the ballot is to be mailed to the voter, the completed application must be received by the District Clerk no later than 3:45 P.M. (Prevailing Time) on May 9, 2023. Whereas absentee ballots must be received by the voter by mail, a military voter may elect to receive his/her absentee ballot application and absentee ballot by mail, email or facsimile. If a military voter does not designate a preference, the board of education shall transmit the military ballot application or military ballot by mail. If a military voter designates a preference for facsimile transmission or electronic mail but does not provide the necessary facsimile number or e-mail address, the board of education shall transmit the voter registration application, military ballot application or military ballot by mail and request the omitted information. The military voter must, however, return his/her original military ballot application and military ballot by mail or in person, regardless of how the absentee application or ballot was received. Changing our stripes

It should come as no surprise to anyone who’s been paying attention to high school sports over the last few years, but we officially have a problem with officials.

Before the “pro-referee’ crowd throws a flag on that lede, I don’t mean to insinuate that the officials we have doing high school contests aren’t qualified; I’m just saying there clearly aren’t enough bodies to go around.

The dwindling number of athletic officials is a topic that has been widely discussed recently, but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen the effects of understaffing quite so vividly until this last week. In the span of five days, I saw three games that I was set to cover—in a wide array of sports—delayed due to a lack of available referees. 4:30 start times turned into 7:15 tip-offs to allow refs doing an early afternoon game to come back and pull double duty in a nightcap.

And while I applaud those referees willing to take on the extra work, I have to ask; why is this even necessary in the first place?

There’s not one good answer to explain

the ref shortages. Instead, there are a host of factors at play. Parent/fan behavior is clearly one, as fewer and fewer potential officials feel the need to put on the whistle and subject themselves to the derision of a growing group of out-of-control spectators. But it’s certainly not the only factor.

I’ve heard from Section 1 athletic directors that many of the top officials are choosing to turn back public school games in favor of accepting events between private schools. The pay may be less, they say, but private schools offer cash payments on the field— as opposed to officials’ paychecks going through BOCES—making an Iona Prep vs. Stepinac a potentially more attractive proposition than Ardsley vs. Pleasantville.

So what can we do to correct this disturbing trend?

Well, in the arena of fan behavior, New York State is taking some steps, unveiling a new spectator rule that sets up a three-warning system for unruly onlookers that would require any fan removed from the premises to attend an online course on fan behavior or serve a one-game attendance suspension.

Sure, this is a step in the right direction, but most believe that it’s an ultimately toothless measure; difficult to enforce and lacking

the significant penalties that might make someone think twice about acting up.

As for losing referees to private schools, that’s a tougher nut to crack entirely. I don’t know enough about the intricacies of Southern Westchester BOCES to offer any sort of solution to entice more officials to keep their

Section I games.

But we better find some solutions soon, otherwise we’re going to see more of these “false starts” in the future.

Rye edges Harrison to share league title

When Harrison and Rye squared off in the annual Andrew Gurgitano Memorial game on May 9, the result was—quite fittingly—a pitchers duel. In the end, however, it was some timely hitting by the Garnets that accounted for their victory, as a two-run sixth inning helped them avenge an early-season loss to the Huskies and come away with a 2-0 win.

The “Gurg Game”—as it is known—is played each year between the two rivals to celebrate the life of former Harrison pitcher Andrew Gurgitano, who died suddenly in 2015 when he was just a senior in high school. The game carries a certain amount of emotion with it, said Rye’s senior catcher

Julian Pasquale, who along with Harrison’s Anthony Engongoro was honored with a memorial scholarship prior to the game.“

Coming down every year it’s awesome and, as a memorial, it’s very special for both teams,” said Pasquale.

“It’s an extra-intense game and this year, especially, it was really neck-and-neck.”

In fact, the score was knotted at zero until the top of the sixth inning, when Pasquale delivered a huge hit for the Garnets, poking an 0-2 offering from

Harrison’s Luke Burden into the outfield to score the first run of the ballgame. Pasquale would come around to score on a double by Tyler Canna, giving Rye a 2-0 lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

“We know [Burden] is tough, especially as a lefty dealing with that changeup; I 100 percent thought it was going to be a changeup, so when I saw it coming inside, I was late on it and got sawed off.” said Pasquale. “It was a pitcher’s pitch and I got lucky to

get the bat on it at all.”

Shep Griffiths would hold the Huskies at bay after the offensive outburst, finishing with a complete game shutout in which he allowed just four hits. Burden, his counterpart, also allowed four hits on the day.

Griffiths admitted he knew he needed to be on his game in order to help the Garnets avenge a 2-1 loss to the Huskies earlier in the year.

“I think I made adjustments as the game went on, but really it game down to trusting the guys behind me,” said Griffiths. “We knew the last game was tight and we expected this one to be as well.”

With the win, the Garnets (12-6-1) and Huskies (13-6) will split the league title and now look ahead to the postseason.

“I think this will give us a lot of momentum, especially tying for the league which is one of our goals,” said Griffiths. “I think we had a different vibe today, everyone was up on the fence, really into the game and I think that gives us a boost.”
