CHAIRMAN’S REPORT CAMPBELL FISHER

IT IS WITH GREAT PRIDE THAT I PRESENT THIS YEAR’S CHAIRMAN’S REPORT, REFLECTING ON A PERIOD OF TRANSFORMATION, RESILIENCE, AND PROGRESS FOR THE RUGBY UNION PLAYERS’ ASSOCIATION (RUPA).

THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, WE HAVE NAVIGATED SIGNIFICANT MILESTONES AND STRATEGIC ADVANCEMENTS, ALL WHILE REMAINING STEADFAST IN OUR COMMITMENT TO ADVOCATING FOR AND SUPPORTING AUSTRALIA’S PROFESSIONAL RUGBY PLAYERS. I WOULD LIKE TO PARTICULARLY THANK THE MEMBERS OF THE BOARD AND EXECUTIVE TEAM FOR THEIR COMMITMENT IN WHAT CAN ONLY BE DESCRIBED AS BOTH A POSITIVE AND CHALLENGING YEAR. RUPA aims to foster a professional rugby environment that prioritises the empowerment, wellbeing, and long-term security of its players. We are committed to ensuring that every player has access to the resources, support, and advocacy needed to excel both on and off the field.

RUPA’s mission is centred on championing the rights of our members, advocating for fair and sustainable professional conditions, and fostering a sport that continues to grow and develop in alignment with the interests of its players. We remain dedicated to securing meaningful opportunities for personal and professional growth, ensuring that rugby remains an attractive and viable career path for current and future generations.

Australian Professional Rugby Business Model and Ecosystem Across the 2024 year, the commercial challenges carrying over from the COVID era impacting professional rugby in Australia, remain. This resulted in a structural change and a move to a hybrid federated model, perhaps a model you would not choose absent existing constraints. This structural change resulted in: The closure of the Melbourne Rebels and associated loss of the men’s and women’s 15s teams.

Rugby Australia (RA) assuming funding obligations for the 2024 season.

RA assuming funding obligations for the NSW Waratahs and ACT Brumbies.

At the end of the 2024 year, RA suffered significant losses ($36.8m) and also had a challenged balance sheet (loans drawn down circa $60m). The Lions Tour in 2025 provides an opportunity to remediate the balance sheet and bring financial stability to the game.

RUPA Participation in Australian Rugby Summit In March 2024, RA initiated an Australian Rugby Summit process where all member unions and RUPA were consulted and had input in relation to the strategic future of the game. Dan Herbert, RA Chairman, and Phil Waugh, RA CEO, called for unity of direction from rugby stakeholders to bring alignment to the future strategic direction “From Green to Gold”.

RUPA have continued to provide input and feedback in relation to the formation of this whole-of-game strategy, which focuses on three main pillars: 1. Performance excellence 2. Participation growth 3. Promotion effectiveness On Field Performances All players are to be congratulated for their on field performances across the 2024 season. The Wallabies improved their win performance to 6 from 13 tests, including a successful northern hemisphere tour with wins over England and Wales.

The Wallaroos won their first international silverware, the WXV2 trophy, to guarantee participation in the 2025 world cup.

The Australian women’s sevens were crowned world champions after defeating France in the final in Madrid, while the Australian men’s sevens achieved their highest ever Olympics result finishing fourth.

Congratulations to the Brumbies for again making the semi finals of super rugby in 2024. Congratulations also to the Waratahs women’s 15s for their comprehensive victory in the Super W final.

Recognition must also be given to our players who suffered injuries in the 2024 season, for their hard work and dedication through rehabilitation processes.

The closure of the Melbourne Rebels The forced closure of the Melbourne Rebels was a challenging event in Australian rugby. The impact of this decision extends far beyond the field, affecting players, staff, and the broader rugby community in Victoria.

Board Updates In 2024, we farewelled Penny Ransom, who had served as a dedicated RUPA Board Director since 2022. Penny’s contribution has been invaluable in shaping the strategic direction of the RUPA Board, particularly in providing guidance to players in discussions with RA regarding Private Equity. On behalf of the Board and our members, I extend our deepest gratitude for her service and unwavering support.

In August 2024, we welcomed Tom Robertson as RUPA’s new President, whose leadership and experience have since played a crucial role in providing a collective player voice in RUPA’s decision making. RUPA thanks former President Dave Porecki for his leadership on the RUPA Board. In addition, we welcome Benn Robinson to the Board as a Director, bringing with him a wealth of experience and an intimate understanding of player advocacy and development. We are also delighted to introduce Dr. Natalie Flatt and Catherine McDonald as new Board Directors, whose diverse expertise will further strengthen our governance and strategic vision.

RUPA has remained actively engaged in supporting the affected players, providing guidance, career transition assistance, and advocacy to ensure they have access to future playing opportunities and professional pathways. Special recognition must go to Moana Leilua, former PDM of the Rebels, for her dedication in supporting the players and their families during this tough time.

Special thanks should also be given to Andrew Kellaway, the Rebels player director for the leadership he displayed at such a challenging time.

While disappointing that the Rebels have left the professional rugby ecosystem, it is pleasing that so many players found redeployment opportunities.

Key Achievements and Milestones Despite the challenges of the past year, RUPA has achieved significant milestones that have strengthened our ability to serve and advocate for players.

RUPA has successfully expanded resources available to players for career transition, mental health and financial planning support; delivered through a strong network of partners.

RUPA player development initiatives have continued to grow, offering tailored educational programs designed to equip players with skills and qualifications that extend beyond their playing careers.

In particular the offering of Training and Educational grants to the Wallaroos playing group in 2025 is a significant milestone in the development of RUPA’s suite support services in the Women’s game.

Additionally, RUPA has made significant progress in fostering greater engagement between RUPA and the playing group, ensuring that player voices remain central to our advocacy efforts.

RUPA Participation in the HighPerformance Review of the 2023 world cup Justin Harrison in his capacity as CEO participated in the High-Performance Review of the Wallaby world cup campaign, ensuring RUPA was centrally consulted and had input to the High-Performance report and recommendations. RUPA has continued to monitor the implementation of the review and recommendations across the 2024 year.

World Rugby’s men’s high-performance committee and shape of game committee Thanks goes to Dean Mumm for his continued participation on the international high-performance committee and shape of game committee. We acknowledge Dean’s contribution to the shape of game planning around safety, entertainment and laws.

Wallabies PDM / National Cultural Leadership management role RUPA has continued its commitment to player development and welfare as well as our commitment to cultural inclusiveness through the creation of a new executive role held by Moana Leilua, who has stepped into the dual roles of Wallabies Player Development Manager and National Cultural Leadership Manager.

AS WE MOVE INTO THE NEXT PHASE OF OUR STRATEGIC PLAN, I EXTEND MY SINCERE APPRECIATION TO THE RUPA BOARD, OUR EXECUTIVE TEAM, RUPA STAFF AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE PLAYERS WHO CONTINUE TO DRIVE THE ASSOCIATION FORWARD. THROUGH RESILIENCE, COLLABORATION, AND A SHARED VISION FOR THE FUTURE, WE REMAIN COMMITTED TO SHAPING BETTER LIVES FOR AUSTRALIAN RUGBY UNION PLAYERS.

Strategic Plan for the Year Ahead Looking forward, RUPA’s strategic priorities will continue to focus on strengthening the player experience, ensuring financial sustainability, and championing the interests of players within the evolving rugby landscape. The implementation of the latest Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA VI) has provided a strong framework for improving player welfare, securing contractual stability, and ensuring equitable remuneration across all formats of the game. While financial challenges persist within the broader rugby ecosystem, we have made tangible progress in securing better conditions and resources for players.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT TOM ROBERTSON (WALLABY #898)

I WOULD LIKE TO BEGIN BY EXPRESSING MY DEEPEST GRATITUDE TO MY FELLOW PLAYERS FOR ELECTING ME TO SERVE AS PRESIDENT OF RUPA. IT IS AN INCREDIBLE HONOUR TO REPRESENT OUR PLAYING GROUP. I TAKE THIS RESPONSIBILITY SERIOUSLY AND AM COMMITTED TO IMPROVING THE RIGHTS AND CONDITIONS OF PROFESSIONAL RUGBY PLAYERS IN AUSTRALIA. I believe in RUPA as an institution and its vital role in shaping the rights and conditions of professional rugby players in Australia. I can say with certainty that without the support of RUPA, my journey in the game and those of many others— both on and off the field—would not have been possible.

I would like to acknowledge the contributions of my predecessor, Dave Porecki, who navigated the closing stages of the last CBA and laid the platform for a successful period for the players association and the players.

In 2024 we welcomed brilliant additions to the RUPA board in Dr Natalie Flatt and Catherine McDonald. Their contributions in the psychology and financial sectors, respectively, will be invaluable to RUPA moving forward. Former RUPA President, NSW Waratah and Wallaby #814 Benn Robinson also joined the board as a Director and will provide insight from both his time as a rugby player and in his current capacity in the insurance industry.

Whilst both teams ultimately came just short of earning medals, they can be proud of their effort and the incredible support that the rugby community and broader Australian public showed their teams during their campaigns. Both teams played some great rugby, and with an emergence of new and exciting talent, it bodes well for the upcoming Olympic games in Los Angeles in 2028 and Brisbane Olympics in 2032.

Many thanks also to our Player Directors, Andrew Kellaway (Waratahs), Cadeyrn Neville (Brumbies), Fraser McReight (Reds), Sam Carter (Force), Emily Chancellor (Wallaroos), Henry Hutchinson (Men’s Sevens), and all players who have added value to RUPA over the past year.

Additionally, I want to extend my thanks to all the RUPA Board, staff, and our dedicated Player Development Managers, whose unwavering support continues to be the backbone of our association.

In Super Rugby we witnessed some thrilling matches with 3 of the 5 Australian Super Rugby sides competing in the finals and history being made. The Melbourne Rebels made their first finals appearance. The Queensland Reds are gaining momentum and building nicely under Les Kiss, while the ACT Brumbies once again proved to be the benchmark, going down in the semifinal at Eden Park to eventual champions The Blues. The axing of the Melbourne Rebels was a difficult period for both past and current players, and for the broader rugby community in Melbourne and around Australia. Fortunately, RUPA was able to negotiate with Rugby Australia to ensure all player contracts were honoured and players were given assistance to relocate.

The Rugby Landscape in 2024 The 2024 season was one of both challenges and triumph for Australian rugby. Our Men’s and Women’s Seven’s sides competed on the world stage at the Paris Olympics.

Whilst it is a disappointing situation for all involved, the assistance from RUPA was critical to ensure the players affected were supported in their transition to other clubs and opportunities.

The prestigious Medal for Excellence, which recognises excellence both on and off the field, was awarded to Fraser McReight for the Men’s competition and Atasi Lafai for the Women’s competition.

As for our national teams, the Wallabies and Wallaroos both showed some great performances and are gaining momentum. The Wallaroos, captained by the Western Force’s Michaela Leonard, competed in WXV2 in South Africa and were eventually crowned champions after beating a tough Scottish side.

Looking Ahead

For the Wallabies, there were 19 debutants in Joe Schmidt’s first year as head coach.

A great start to the year against the Welsh and Georgian sides was followed by close matches against Los Pumas, The All Blacks, and the Springboks. The Spring Tour was a success, highlighted by crosscode star Joseph-Aukuso Sua'ali’i making his debut in a fantastic win against England.

To seize these opportunities and ensure the long-term success of our game, we must be unified. Unity among the playing group is crucial, and to do this it’s essential that we democratise the flow of information within the game. By doing so, we’ll ensure that there is greater buy-in and ownership from players, and that RUPA’s voice remains strong, representative and relevant in shaping our future.

RUPA Awards

As I look forward to my time serving the players, I believe there are a few key areas I want to focus on:

The 2024 BDO RUPA Awards Lunch was a celebration of excellence, dedication, and service within Australian rugby. Blake Schoupp was awarded the Community Service Award for his outstanding contributions off the field, demonstrating a deep commitment to making a difference in the community. Blake was rewarded for his work with youth mentorship programs, mental health initiatives and rugby clinics.

Andy Muirhead and Ed Kennedy jointly received the Academic Excellence Award, recognizing their dedication to balancing rugby with academic achievement. Andy was rewarded after founding Yara, which provides training and career opportunities in civil construction for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals. Ed Kennedy was also recognised for completing a Bachelor of Commerce and Graduate Diploma in Financial Planning for which he was inducted into the University of Tasmania’s Roll of Excellence.

In the Sevens format, and on the back of impressive individual performances at the Paris Olympics, Maddison Levi was named Women’s Sevens Player of the Year, while Nick Malouf took home Men’s Sevens Player of the Year honours.

Rising star Charlie Cale was awarded Newcomer of the Year. After making his Brumbies debut in 2023, the powerful backrower continued his strong form and was rewarded with his maiden test cap in 2024.

Looking ahead, the next few years are set to be some of the most exciting in Australian rugby. This is an extraordinary time for our game, and all of us have a part to play in making it the most significant decade in Australian rugby history.

Firstly, a focus on the promotion of the players and the environment in the professional game. RUPA has done an incredible job in protecting the rights of players and the playing environment over recent years. However, looking to the future, it is imperative that we strive towards enhancing and progressing the interests of individual players and the playing group as a whole.

Secondly, the development of the women’s game. We’ve seen incredible growth in women’s rugby in Australia, in both 7s and 15s, and it’s an area where I believe we can do so much more. There is a wealth of untapped potential in our female athletes, and we must do everything in our power to support them on their journey to full professionalism. Whether it’s through more investment, stronger advocacy, or greater education and wellbeing, the future of women’s rugby is bright, and we must ensure that we’re part of that momentum.

Lastly, the playing environment. My vision is for professional rugby in Australia to be regarded as the best in Australian sport and one of the best in the world. The environment in which our players train, play, and develop needs to be second to none. We want every player, regardless of their background, to feel that they have the resources, the support, and the opportunity to thrive in their current career as professional athletes and beyond.

CEO’s REPORT JUSTIN HARRISON (WALLABY #770) As we reflect on the past year, 2024 has been a challenging and defining period for rugby players in Australia. At RUPA, we remain unwavering in our commitment to advocating for, supporting, and empowering players at every stage of their careers—on and off the field. The strength of our game lies in the resilience, engagement and passion of its people. Thank you to the dedicated RUPA team, both in the administrative office and our Player Development Managers for continuing to support players through sport and life.

Rugby continues to navigate a dynamic and evolving landscape, through it all, RUPA has stood as the collective voice of professional players, ensuring that their interests are protected and enhanced. A central focus in 2024 has been strengthening and enhancing well-being programs and reinforcing our commitment to career transition support. The game demands much from its players, and it is vital to provide resources, knowledge, and support for players to thrive beyond their playing days.

One of the year’s milestones was the continued evolution of our Player Development Program, The Advantage Line. The program has supported players actively pursuing further education, vocational training, and business ventures. Our work with the Wallabies, Wallaroos, Australian Sevens and Super Rugby squads has reinforced the importance of holistic development, ensuring that players are not just prepared for the performance of elite sport but also for meaningful opportunities beyond rugby.

The next 5 years present an incredible opportunity for Australian rugby. With the British & Irish Lions Tour in 2025, a home Rugby World Cup in 2027, and a Women’s Rugby World Cup in 2029, we have a unique moment to not only compete on the world stage but to strengthen the very foundation of our game.

At RUPA, we see this period as a defining moment not just for our teams, but for the future of Australian rugby as a whole. Player advocacy has never been more important. Our focus is on ensuring that players are supported, protected, and empowered so they can perform at their best, knowing their voices are heard and their careers are secure.

RUPA has also remained at the forefront of advocating for player welfare and contractual security. Our ongoing collaboration with Rugby Australia and key stakeholders has led to significant advancements in workplace conditions, medical care provisions, and financial sustainability for players.

These conversations are important in safeguarding the well-being of the athletes and ensuring that their contributions to the game are recognized and valued. I would like to sincerely thank RUPA’s many partners who not only assist us as an organisation, but provided their own envelope of care to current and past players. We are grateful for the tireless effort and genuine care for player welfare.

This means continuing to fight for fair conditions, mental health support, and development pathways that set players up for success—on and off the field. It means working with stakeholders to ensure our game remains competitive, sustainable, and attractive for the next generation. In each partnership agreement, we use the players’ core needs as a framework to ensure that each partnership delivers meaningful and beneficial support services. This involves having a deep understanding of what it means to be the person inside the athlete, and the core skills for life required to navigate the professional playing journey.

RUPA’s player directors and delegates are an essential piece in this process, as they communicate the collective voice of all player needs back into RUPA. RUPA has a strong network of partners who are interested in not only helping players during their career, but also beyond. Almost all players struggle with transitioning out of rugby into new careers. Knowing that they have access to a network of like-minded mentors, can assist this process.

2024 saw the reintroduction of RUPA’s Networking Group where industry leaders provided their time and assistance to help players create options for life after rugby.

This innovative product allows players to have peace of mind that their assets and wealth are protected by a trusted partner of RUPA.

Partnering since 2016, Buildcorp has been a long standing partner of not only RUPA, but Australian Rugby for many years. Through initiatives like the Annual Buildcorp Rugby Player Induction Camp and career networking programs, Buildcorp are committed to helping players grow on and off the field, build meaningful connections, and prepare for life beyond rugby. Buildcorp also provide players with potential career opportunities in construction, facilitated through visits to their sites. Each year, Buildcorp presents the Women’s Medal for Excellence award at the Annual BDO Rugby Players Lunch.

WORLD RUGBY BRAIN HEALTH SERVICE IN APRIL 2024, WORLD RUGBY AND RUPA LAUNCHED THE BRAIN HEALTH SERVICE TO SUPPORT FORMER RUGBY UNION PLAYERS TO UNDERGO A HEALTH SCREENING PROCESS PROVIDING A HEALTH REPORT TO RECOMMEND MODIFIABLE LIFESTYLE HABITS WITH A VIEW TO IMPROVING QUALITY OF LIFE OR PROVIDING REFERRALS FOR FURTHER TESTING IF REQUIRED

World Rugby Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Prof Martin Raftery welcomed the launch of the Brain Health Service saying:

“MENTAL AND OVERALL PHYSICAL HEALTH ARE AN IMPORTANT FOCUS FOR BOTH OUR PRESENT AND PAST PLAYERS. RUPA CERTAINLY JOINS IN THANKING WORLD RUGBY FOR SECURING THIS VALUABLE SERVICE TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE CONTINUED WELLBEING OF OUR PLAYERS ONCE THEY HAVE LEFT THE FIELD.”

In 2021, World Rugby launched a sixpoint plan to continue to be a progressive sport on player welfare. A key pillar of that plan to support former players is the establishment of the Brain Health Service.

The Brain Health Service, funded by World Rugby, has been designed using independent, scientifically proven examination techniques. Former players fill out an initial questionnaire and then have an online consultation with a trained brain health practitioner who will identify any signs that the individual may require a referral towards specialist care.

The Brain Health Service in Australia is administered by RUPA and will sit alongside the suite of support services RUPA offers to former players.

THE SERVICE IS AVAILABLE TO ANY MALE AND FEMALE RETIRED PLAYERS WHO HAVE COMPETED AT AN INTERNATIONAL OR SUPER RUGBY LEVEL.

RUPA Chair, Campbell Fisher, commended the benefits of this initiative and encourages past players to take advantage of these specialised services.

THE ADVANTAGE LINE JAMES HOLBECK (WALLABY #737)

The Advantage Line program: Key Highlights The whole staff caught up in late February in Melbourne, where we invited internationally renowned wellbeing expert, Associate Professor Aaron Jarden, to work with us using the latest research to better inform our practices.

We also worked on how we can better work with injured players & discussed player feedback from the previous season. We decided to focus on improving two key metrics for the 2024 season; improving player satisfaction within the Player Development Program and increasing how many players had Individual Development Plans (IDP’s).

At the Sydney meeting we heard from Paul Lyons of Everything Mental Toughness on the Mental Toughness scale, called the MTQPlus, which is a more rounded conceptualisation, and trialled the measurement at the Induction Camp. Scott Hanock presented on the career readiness competencies he had adapted to deliver to the Western force players. We also invited Amy Thorp, the Head of Integrity at RA, to join us for one of the days.

During the year PDM’s were also fortunate to have Professor Catherine Haslam, a lead researcher at the University of Queensland, share on the More than Sport intervention into working with transitioning athletes on their social identity. Rugby Australia also invited PDM’s to a two-day workshop in Brisbane where we worked with the Chief Medical Officer & Team Doctors on providing a more coordinated approach to players.

NSW Waratahs – Charlotte Anneveld

Queensland Reds - Hayley Cronin

Charlotte facilitated a psychologist-led awareness session for player partners, focusing on recognizing signs of distress in their partner and children, along with self-care strategies during absences. She hosted the family and partners' box at games, organized career mentor connections, and led a Career Networking Event. Charlotte also ran workshops on budgeting and time management, coordinated skin checks with RUPA partners, Molemap, and organized a Pasifika Day to celebrate cultural diversity.

These initiatives supported players and their families, enhancing wellbeing and professional development throughout the year. With limited opportunities during the playing season to drive individual development plans, Charlotte was able to increase her number close to 95% by years end.

Hayley was such an integral part of the Les Kiss management staff that at the end of December 2024, she was offered an in-house psychological position for the team. We wish her well in the new role, due to start in January, 2025 and reflect on the amazing work she has done in her time in the role.

Hayley ran workshops on visualisation, coping skills and healthy mindsets, working with coaches on recognising the signs and symptoms of mental health. Hayley also used BDO to deliver a financial presentation. The program had 86% of players with an off-field development plan.

ACT Brumbies – Robin Duff Robin celebrated her 10th year at the Brumbies with the highest player satisfaction in any program. She conducted short seminars and workshops on topics such as unhealthy thinking styles, resilience, mindfulness, and other calming strategies. The annual BDO Lunch further underscored the quality of the program, with two Brumbies players being recognized as joint winners of the 2024 Academic Award. Additionally, Robin pursued her own professional development through various short courses and workshops, including Alcohol Brief Intervention training (which she presented to other PDMs in Melbourne), a resume writing masterclass, self-injury, domestic and family violence, trauma-responsive practice, recognizing and reframing anxiety, and AI. The program had 86% of players with an off-field development plan.

Women’s XV - David King RUPA and Rugby Australia welcomed David King as the new National Player Development Manager (PDM) for the Wallaroos and Super Rugby Women’s players. With a background in performance psychology and education, David’s focus has been on delivering one-on-one development plans and holistic support for Wallaroo players. His mission to enhance offfield growth across the women’s game is already driving progress through tailored player development initiatives, which will extend to Super W teams in 2025.

Aussie Sevens – Alisha Reber Alisha worked to sponsor two of the Aussie Women’s Sevens cooking nights, featuring two dietician-led challenges.

One challenge resulted in meal prepping 250 meals, which went towards those in need for a program in Sydney. Robert Walters also hosted a Men’s networking event which was a highly successful night. The Men’s team also asked to be provided with further financial skills workshops for both beginners and more advanced players which were delivered

by BDO. Henry Hutchinson, as the Player Director, participated in the RUPA Board Governance program and was then elected to the Olympic Committee. Alisha also contributed to the AIS minimum standards working group on Player Development. Additionally, she was studying a Cert IV in Career Development and attended the AIS Summit.

Western Force – Scott Hancock Scott was the driver of the player onboarding program and was included in roundtable discussions for injured players with other key HP Staff. He was part of a pilot program with Rugby Australia's Integrity Manager covering alcohol, code of conduct, scenario activities, and social media. He also led a series of workshops, including a social connectedness session aimed at combating loneliness for players transitioning to Western Australia, based on University of Queensland research. Additional workshops focused on mental health awareness, career readiness competencies, individual development plans for athletes, and exploring values and strengths, all contributing to the overall wellbeing education for players.

Melbourne Rebels - Moana Leilua Despite the difficult decision to discontinue the Rebels' licence, the team made history in 2024 by securing their first-ever finals campaign. PDM Moana Leilua emphasized the importance of connection, culture, and community throughout the season. Her leadership and support, alongside outstanding player advocacy by Andrew Kellaway and James Tuttle, contributed to the team’s collective success and unity. RUPA played a vital role in guiding players through a challenging year, providing comprehensive support across both welfare and contracting matters.

Super Rugby Player Survey

In early 2024, RUPA conducted a national roadshow, visiting each Super Rugby club and Sevens team to engage directly with players. These sessions provided education and collected feedback on key issues, including the introduction of instrumented mouthguards, careerending injury insurance, membership benefits, RA’s proposed private equity investment, and the evolving centralised governance model for professional rugby.

The 2024 Annual Player Survey provided invaluable insights into the experiences and priorities of our playing group. With 123 players participating across 4 clubs, this year’s survey revealed encouraging progress across several key areas, while also highlighting important opportunities for future growth.

While the announcement of the Melbourne Rebels’ exit from the Super Rugby at the end of the 2025 season was deeply disappointing, RUPA played a crucial role in supporting affected players.

As a participant in the liquidation process, RUPA successfully advocated to ensure that all contracted players received their full entitlements, including salary and benefits, through the duration of their agreements in accordance with the CBA. In a significant development, 2024 also marked the expansion of the Player Development Program to include the women’s game. David King was appointed as Player Development Manager – Women’s XV, overseeing support for Super W and Wallaroos players.

RUPA continues to champion the player voice in discussions with clubs and stakeholders, adapting to evolving needs and feedback. Off-field support and active player engagement remain at the heart of RUPA’s approach to building stronger, more connected teams for the future.

A clear link was found between strong offfield development programs and overall club satisfaction. The best-performing clubs had the highest number of players with personalised off-field development plans, underlining the importance of investing in players' lives beyond the field.

Player Development Managers (PDMs) continue to play a pivotal role in the player experience, emerging as the primary point of contact for personal development and mental health support. High-performing clubs were characterised by the strong presence and influence of their PDMs, with players feeling a clear sense of support and guidance through their initiatives.

Players reported an improvement in balancing family commitments with offfield pursuits. Notably, there was a rise in the time players dedicated to study and additional work placements, signalling a broader cultural shift toward preparing for life beyond professional sport. Support for network-building has also seen marked improvement, with players acknowledging increased access to opportunities and connections via The Advantage Line.

Encouragingly, all clubs have made meaningful progress in creating inclusive environments that respect and embrace diversity across race, religion, and sexuality.

Players also acknowledged an increase in mental health awareness and support across clubs.

This cultural shift reflects a growing commitment across the Australian rugby to building welcoming, safe spaces for all players.

Overall, the 2024 survey shows that off-field development, inclusivity, and stronger player voice are key drivers of growing satisfaction and a connected, supportive professional environment. RUPA look forward to working with players in 2025 and continue to provide a voice to players to further strengthen their position.

Super W Player Survey The 2024 Women’s Player Survey saw 117 players participating across five clubs, providing feedback on their experiences both on and off the field, highlighting strong progress and key opportunities for growth in the Women’s game. Players noted the improved pre-season programs and professionalism, but called for a longer Super W season to better support development.

Club facilities and services received largely positive feedback, reflecting ongoing investment in the Women’s game, though media coverage and commercial opportunities were rated poorly, pointing to the need for greater visibility. Players strongly supported doubleheader fixtures with men’s teams, valuing the increased exposure and club unity.

A majority of players have expressed that their work-life balance has improved, yet many players still require more support balancing rugby with employment.

Players also expressed satisfaction at a greater focus on the level of support available at their clubs for mental health issues, although but concerns persist about stigma.

The survey shows clear momentum for the women’s game, with a focus now on extending the season, boosting media presence, and strengthening player wellbeing initiatives. RUPA looks forward to increasing our range of support services for Super W and Wallaroos players in 2025 and beyond.

Player Insurance RUPA continues to provide a safeguard to players with the Career Ending Insurance Policy that provides players with worldwide 24/7 coverage, and not only covers the risk of injury whilst training or playing, but also includes full-time cover for any illnesses or accidents outside of rugby.

The RUPA membership continued to commit to making a contribution towards funding the policy through a deduction of 2.5% of their total annual base salary.

Recognising the limited career span of professional athletes, the Grant plays a vital role in supporting players’ prepare for the post-rugby careers via the Player Development Program. RUPA remains committed to fostering the ongoing education and future ambitions of our members. Since its introduction in 2001, the Grant has provided over $6 million worth of education grants to players.

Agent Accreditation The Australian Rugby Player Agent Accreditation Scheme (PAAS) was introduced in 2007, with RUPA acting as the administrators of the Scheme, ensuring that individuals and organisations representing Australia’s professional players demonstrate an appropriate level of understanding of Australian Rugby contracting; with the CBA mandating that Rugby Bodies must only deal with Agents who are accredited under the Scheme and bound by a Code of Conduct and Regulations.

In 2024, RUPA and RA engaged Ian Prendergast of Sports Advisory Partners Australia to undertake a review of the PAAS. The aim of the review is to examine the design and operation of the current Scheme and provide recommendations on ways to integrate benchmarks from similar schemes of other codes. RUPA look forward to incorporating the recommendations into the operations of the Scheme in 2025 to deliver a Scheme that best protects players and upskills Agents.

In order to maintain accreditation, all Agents must attend the Annual Accreditation Conference, with the 2024 Conference hosted

by RUPA at the Rugby Australia Building in November, with Agents also attending via teleconference at the Ballymore Boardroom.

The conference was attended by more than 50 Accredited Agents who received presentations on:

We acknowledge and thank all Accredited Agents for their ongoing support of the Scheme and their invaluable service to players throughout 2024.

RUPA would like to thank Richard Breden, who at the end of 2023, stood down from his role as Independent Chair of the Player Agent Accreditation Board, having served on the Board for over 10 years. We thank Richard for the direction he has provided the Board, and his outstanding contribution in improving the PAAS for players and agents alike.

PLAYER INDUCTION CAMP

BUILDCORP INDUCTION CAMP Overview The 2024 Buildcorp RUPA Induction Camp, held in Sydney, welcomed the newest generation of professional rugby players, aiming to support their transition into the high-performance environment of elite rugby. Over 3 days, the camp focused on RUPA’s 6 key pillars of Player Development, delivered through The Advantage Line Program.

Day 1 The first day of the Induction Camp, set a strong foundation for incoming players as they embarked on their journey into high-performance rugby.

With 18 players attending from across all clubs, today was all about equipping players with the tools to navigate the challenges of transitioning into the elite sporting environment, whilst fostering personal and professional growth. The day kicked off with lunch at The Holiday Inn Potts Point where players got a chance to meet each other and develop connections. Thank you to Michael Ingrey for acknowledging the Gadigal land in which we gather on for the Induction Camp.

Following Lunch, the players heard from RUPA President and Wallaby #898, Tom Robertson, who provided a player testimonial highlighting the role of RUPA in supporting members along their journey of professional sport as well as his career and education experience.

Tom encouraged the players to engage at the camp, and utilise RUPA’s suite of support services.

RUPA's Player Development Managers then sat down with players and initiated an open and honest session where participants discussed the realities of stepping into the high-performance arena. Key challenges were identified, sparking insightful conversations about strategies for managing pressure, balancing commitments, and maintaining mental health.

This led into the MTQ Plus Assessment, a psychometric assessment that measures mental skills for life, delivered

by RUPA’s Partner, Paul Lyons from Everything Mental Toughness. Players learnt about the foundations of mental toughness, what it is and what it isn’t, and gaining a deeper understanding into how they can harness resilience to thrive under pressure.

The session paved the way for inspiring Resilience Stories, where experienced players shared personal insights into overcoming setbacks and adapting to challenges, creating a space for connection and learning.

In the afternoon, players delved into strength virtues and developing personal coping strategies and learning from previous experiences to grow & plan for future events.

Following this, the players headed over to dinner hosted by RUPA's proud partner Buildcorp. The players had the opportunity to connect with many past players and Buildcorp staff in a relaxed setting. Thank you to all those past players who attended the event and provided players with advice and personal insight. Buildcorp's Marketing and Partnership Lead and Wallaby #865, James Hanson, also shared his insights into his playing journey and transitioning out of the game into other fields of work.

The dinner also included an engaging workshop on Media and Interview Skills from Stan Sport Executive producer, James Harrison, and Commentator and Producer, Andrew Swain. They provided practical advice and handson experiences in managing the media spotlight. Players honed their communication skills, preparing them to represent themselves and their teams with professionalism and authenticity.

Day 2 The players began their day with a 6am gym session at Rugby Australia, followed by breakfast. Rugby AU General Manager of Men’s High Performance Pathways and Competitions, Ben Whittaker, welcomed the players and emphasized the importance of the ‘person inside the athlete’ and the personal growth throughout a player’s career.

Financial Literacy with BDO Will Tuffley and Kelly Kennedy from RUPA’s partners, BDO, introduced players to strategies for managing their earnings wisely. Topics included professional athlete centric tax advice, budgeting, understanding investments, and planning for financial stability.

Players gained actionable insights into how to make the most of their current income while preparing for the future.

Mental Health and Wellbeing Brumbies PDM, Robin Duff, led an impactful session addressing mental health challenges often faced by athletes. Players were provided with tools to recognize signs of distress in themselves and teammates.

Tools included accessing Telus Health One App (partner of Rugby AU), a wellbeing health hub providing players with complimentary counselling sessions. The session also included strategies for fostering a culture of openness and support, along with resources for seeking professional help when needed Building Networks and Personal Resilience Andrew Hanson from RUPA’s partner, Robert Walters, encouraged player to think beyond the pitch and start building professional networks in other industries. Key takeaways included the importance of networking for career transitions, leveraging relationships, and identifying transferable skills that can open doors in diverse industries.

The Building Blocks of Property Ownership Reuben Way from Flint Mortgage Brokers guided players through the complexities of buying property. The session covered essential topics such as securing loans, understanding market trends, and planning for long-term financial growth through real estate investments.

Resilience Through Gratitude and Mindfulness Reflection and Inspiration Robin returned with a workshop on developing resilience through practices such as gratitude, generosity, and mindfulness.

Players engaged in reflective exercises and discussions, learning how these habits can enhance focus, reduce stress, and build emotional strength during challenging times.

Brand Building with The Brand Builders Vickie Saunders from The Brand Builders, delivered an insightful workshop delving into the art of presenting oneself authentically and finding a personal sense of brand and identity. Players learned how to craft a compelling personal narrative, leverage their unique qualities, and establish a lasting impression in both their professional and social circles.

Over dinner at Penny’s Hotel in Potts Point, players heard from Gary Fahey, a former bodyguard and Ambassador for the Australian & New Zealand Mental Health Association. Gary shared his deeply personal story of resilience, detailing how he overcame life’s adversities to rebuild a fulfilling and purpose-driven life. His talk underscored the importance of mental strength, adaptability, and maintaining a positive outlook even in the face of challenges.

Day 3

The first session focused on utilizing Skills for Life data from the MTQPlus assessment on day 1. This gave players a comprehensive outline of how to leverage their unique strengths effectively and The Art of the Side Hustle build mental skills for life.
