Dear RCDS Community, As we celebrate the start of 2020, I am reminded of the exceptional moments and signature experiences that take place each year within the walls of our special school. We are pleased to share our stories – made possible by the generosity of our community – through The Rumson Country Day School’s 2018-19 Philanthropy Report.

Over 550 parents, grandparents, alumni families, trustees, past trustees, faculty, staff, community partners and volunteers demonstrated their commitment to RCDS last year, ensuring that the Annual Giving Campaign and Parent Council initiatives were overwhelming successes. Your direct support of the Annual Giving Campaign raised $678,000 which helps RCDS offer an education far beyond what tuition dollars alone could provide.

The parent community also joined together to provide additional support allowing the school to enhance its playspaces, directly benefiting every child in the school.

Thank you for all the generous support.

We are grateful to our families for choosing RCDS, our alumni for continuing to exemplify RCDS’s core values, our grandparents for supporting the growth of our students and families in all ways, our faculty and staff for igniting our student’s imaginations, and our parent and trustee volunteers for the countless hours they contribute to provide a signature RCDS experience.

Valued at $14,640,937 as of June 30, 2019, The Rumson Country Day School’s endowment is an investment in the future that is intended to ensure the school can continue to pursue its mission in perpetuity with palpable momentum and a remarkable trajectory forward.

A strong endowment endeavors to provide a permanent source of income and affords RCDS the opportunity to both plan and fulfill strategic, long-term decisions on a solid financial foundation. RCDS CELEBRATES CLASS OF 2019 AND RECOGNIZES STUDENTS WITH AWARDS AT COMMENCEMENT

On Friday, June 14, The Rumson Country Day School Class of 2019 was celebrated at the annual commencement ceremony on the RCDS lawn. This year, thirty-eight students received their diplomas from Head of School Jayne Geiger and Board of Trustees President John Devlin.

RCDS prides itself on instilling the character and confidence that eighthgrade commencement speaker Adele Bender exemplified during her speech. The strong educational foundation, the leadership and independence unique to RCDS graduates that Adele mentioned are keys to success in secondary school and beyond. As the ceremony continued, The Class of 2019 was recognized for their achievements with awards.

After the presentation of awards and diplomas, the graduates performed the school song, one last time as a class, to close the evening.

The Athletic Department Award, given to the athletes in the graduating class who best exemplify the qualities of athleticism, participation, spirit, and sportsmanship, was given to Paige Cecil and Bryce Devlin.

The Blake Award, named after Edgar Bond Blake who served The Rumson Country Day School for 40 years, was given to Angie Getze and Julian Magherini to acknowledge their exemplary service to RCDS. The Swede Joseph Chevalier Memorial Award was presented by Swede’s mother to honor Mallory Aronne and her display of kindness and humility towards fellow students, devotion to growth and originality, and perseverance to goals.

Board of Trustees member, alumnus and current parent Carl Reiss proudly presented The Theodore K. Reiss Memorial Award in memory of his brother Ted Reiss. The Reiss Memorial Award was given to Grace Gibson who best exemplifies the spirit of good sportsmanship in all phases of school life.

Chloe Constantinopoulos was presented with the Highest Scholarship Award, which recognizes the graduate who has attained the highest level of scholarship in the Upper School over the last three years.

Julian Magherini was honored as this year’s Second Highest Scholarship Winner.

Aidan MacManus received the Trustees Prize which honors the student with the most outstanding qualities of scholarship, sportsmanship, leadership, and character.

RCDS proves an outstanding record of secondary school placement and the Class of 2019 is no exception. We are so proud of our graduates and wish them well at the following secondary schools:

The children choose a role, make a plan and write it out using the Scaffold Writing approach.

This allows teachers to assess and support emerging literacy skills on an individualized basis and work with students individually at their literacy level.”

DEAR RCDS COMMUNITY, A heartfelt thanks to all of our parents who volunteer their time, talent and efforts to support the RCDS Parent Council. Whether acting as a class parent, chair or co-chair of an event, or committee member, it truly takes a village to support fourteen lower school homerooms, four upper school grades, and eighteen activities throughout the year. The Parent Council organization sponsored free activities for our children such as the annual Lower School Halloween Party, Family Reading Night, Mother/Son Dodgeball, and Father/Daughter Darling Dance. Parent Council also hosted Welcome Back and Holiday Breakfasts for our Faculty & Staff and a full week of Appreciation events to support and champion our beloved Faculty & Staff. Many parents worked weekly in our Library to re-shelve books and helped distribute collected coats, toys, and food in our three public service events.

Numerous parents helped set up and organize our Book Fair, fold and sell clothing in our Gently Used Uniform Store, bag and distribute pretzels in our monthly Pretzel Day event, and market and sell essentials from our Gator Alley School Store. These four events helped fund our free events listed above and also support the Library, the annual Upper School Shakespeare event, a 7th Grade LIterature Trip and incidentals like free snacks for the Upper School during mid-term and final exams. Our biggest give back to our children & parents, outside of the fun events above, were the three speaker series we sponsored on topics such as resiliency, executive functioning, and social media.

The two largest fundraisers Parent Council supports are the Annual Rummage Sale and Gator Bash. The Rummage Sale celebrated its 50th Anniversary this year led by Chairs Meghann Marturano & Ginny Moore.

Their dedication and leadership, along with several outstanding sub-committee chairs, served our entire community by raising a substantial donation to the tuition assistance fund as well as support the greater community with the ability to purchase quality goods and clothing at very reasonable prices.

After a wonderful night showcasing a kaleidoscope of mixed-media art, song, instrumentals and speech at our annual Arts Festival, the Gator Bash, chaired by Cheryl Jones & Kara Dockery, enveloped our parent, faculty & staff into a super fun night raising funds for both the school’s operating budget and the Gators At Play initiative to provide recreation space and options for all grades into the future.

In the spring, RCDS’s Annual Gala, Gator Bash, raised funds necessary to make the “Gators at Play” project possible.

After months of anticipation, students, faculty, and staff gathered on campus to participate in grade-level ribbon-cutting ceremonies that celebrated the official opening of RCDS’s updated recreational areas. The spaces, outfitted with a variety of new equipment and toys, offer rich, creative play opportunities where students develop strong gross motor skills and cultivate their social, emotional and academic growth across the years.

Remembering

Skip Sykes RCDS Head of School from 1977-1989

This past November, The Rumson Country Day School lost a very special family member, former Headmaster Donald M. Sykes, Jr. (“Skip” to his many friends). While most of his former colleagues have retired from RCDS, he is still remembered fondly by his school family. Skip Sykes was, above all, an outstanding educator with a true passion for independent education.

Blessed with both intellect and athletic skill, he loved to teach and he loved to coach, but it was the quality of Skip’s character that really set him apart. Kind, caring, understanding, and modest, he also possessed inner strength, great humor, and a powerful sense of family.

The news of his passing has encouraged old friends to share their memories of this gentleman, his dedication to our school and the many ways he helped to make RCDS the highly respected school it is today.

“Skip knew his students well. Caring about each student in the school was a hallmark of his tenure. Every December when we left school for the twoweek Winter Break, Skip was just beginning his winter work. He was in his office every day crafting a personal narrative about each ninth grader as they applied to boarding school. His write up left no doubt in the reader’s mind that this Headmaster knew his students and most importantly knew what made them succeed! He supported them as athletes, too, even coaching soccer. I do not think there was a sports game that Skip missed. He was always there on the sidelines cheering his students on. Whenever I attended a conference, faculty from other schools upon hearing where I taught would always remark, ‘That is an excellent school - Skip Sykes is the Head!”

“Our two children were in the classes of ‘83 and ’85, a time when a large percentage of every graduating class matriculated at boarding schools. This concept was new to our family and we were nervous about school visits and interviews. Visiting our first school, we received a surprisingly warm and personal welcome. The tour seemed tailor-made to our son’s interests! That’s when we discovered that every RCDS student’s scheduled school visit was preceded by a personal letter of introduction from Skip, making the experiences easier and more productive for everyone. Over time, Skip’s student evaluations proved to be so accurate that all the boarding schools trusted him completely! ‘Skip Sykes’ student references are the best in the business!’ was a phrase we heard at every admissions office that year, and again two years later, when we repeated the process with our daughter.”
