This week we celebrated our amazing midwives across the Trust.
Over the next few weeks, we celebrate International Day of the Midwife, National ODP Day and National Nurses Day.
I want to express my heartfelt thanks to every nurse, midwife and operating department practitioner across Barnsley Hospital.
Your compassion, expertise and unwavering commitment make an extraordinary difference to the people we serve. Each of you plays a vital role in delivering safe, dignified and outstanding care, often in challenging circumstances.
I am incredibly proud of your professionalism, resilience and teamwork. Thank you for the kindness you show, the skill you bring, and the dedication you live every day. You are the heart of our hospital.

Sue said she feels “incredibly honoured” and is thrilled to share the special day with her daughter who attended alongside her.
Colleagues have praised her kindness, leadership and dedication. We hope you had the most amazing day, Sue –everyone at Barnsley Hospital is so proud of you.
InternationalDayoftheMidwife
On Tuesday we celebrated International Day of the Midwife across the Trust. It’s a celebration of the crucial role midwives play in our communities, and the brilliant work our midwifery teams do every day. You may have seen some of our midwives raising funds with homemade bakes, cakes and pastries on a mobile cake sale. Thank you for all you do.

This International Day of the Midwife, we wanted to thank Ellie Brown for her fundraising for the hospital’s Rainbow Room.
Ellie has worked as a midwife at Barnsley for 16 years.
Ellie said: “Supporting these families is not just my job - it is something I carry with me every single day.
“But I am also a bereaved parent, when my son Rupert died, I sat in that very room. I know first-hand how important that space is. In those moments, nothing can take the pain away - but the environment, the care, and the smallest details can make an unbearable situation feel just a little gentler, a little more human.
“No one should ever have to say goodbye to their baby. But if they do, they deserve the very best support and surroundings we can provide.”

Barnsley Hospital’s Endoscopy Department is celebrating national recognition after being shortlisted as one of just six teams in the Green Gastroenterology Challenge 2026.
Backed by Micro-Tech UK, the initiative supports teams to deliver high-impact sustainability projects while improving patient care.
Guided by the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare, the team will develop innovative ideas throughout the year, culminating in a national showcase this November.
Consultant Gastroenterologist Dr Elmuhtady Said praised the achievement as a win for patients, the planet and Barnsley’s NHS Net Zero ambitions.
Helpshapeournextsmokefreepolicy
As we revisit our journey towards making the hospital a smokefree site, we want to understand what this change really feels like for you. We know change works best when it’s shaped with the people it affects, so we’re inviting colleagues to participate in our Trust-wide survey.
It’s an opportunity to share your experiences, feel heard, and help shape a policy that’s realistic and works in practice. Your perspective matters.
Find out more on the Hub and fill out the survey when it’s launched.
Professional Nurse Advocates (PNAs) are here to support staff through a continuous improvement process aiming to build personal and professional resilience, enhance quality of care, and support preparation for revalidation.

Barnsley FC Community Trust is currently running a colouring competition with local artist Adam Briscoe.
The club wanted to have the children and young people who are currently on the Children’s Ward at Barnsley take part. They called in with mascot Toby Tyke to hand out the art for colouring.
The prize is a piece of artwork signed by Barnsley FC’s first team.
Huge thanks to everyone at Alhambra Outpatients who stepped forwards to be on camera, shouting about our fantastic facility in a social media video for the Department of Health and Social Care.
Arranged at the last minute of course, the teams showed a great welcome to Melvin.
Look out on the DHSC social channels for colleagues talking about the work being done at Alhambra Outpatients.
