Emily Emmons' path to entrepreneurship was shaped by her personal life and professional endeavors. With a background in marketing, sales, and veteran advocacy, she witnessed the transformative effects of gardening on her husband John, a military veteran grappling with traumatic brain injury and PTSD. This personal revelation inspired the creation of Hoʻōla Farms, a project aimed at extending these therapeutic benefits to other veterans in need

"The idea for Hoʻōla Farms began with the Victory Gardens for Veterans program," Emmons recalls. "We started by delivering free garden beds and plant starts to veterans and their families The positive outcomes were undeniable, and we quickly saw the potential for broader impact."

This early success led to further developments, including the Growing Veterans program funded by the USDA's Enhancing Agricultural Opportunities for Military Veterans (AGVETS) Grant. Emmons and her team recognized the need for more agribusiness opportunities and expanded their efforts to include the Groundwork to Grow program and the Hawai’i Farm-to-Car initiative.

Emmons' entrepreneurial journey has been shaped by several key mentors. The core mission of Hoʻōla Farms is to strengthen the local food system through education, commercial kitchen access, and an online farmers market This vision has been realized through various programs aimed at supporting local farmers and veterans alike. Emmons is particularly proud of the 2023 Impact Report, which highlights nearly a decade of work and celebrates the collective achievements of her team and volunteers

"Our 2023 Impact Report is a testament to the incredible work we’ve done," Emmons shares. "It captures not just the progress of the past year but the culmination of nearly ten years of dedication and growth "

Starting a business is never without its challenges, and Emmons faced her share. As a woman-owned Executive Director, securing funding on par with male-run organizations proved difficult. Emmons overcame this challenge by focusing on federal grants and seeking support from foundations and corporations

Troy Small's story begins in July 1989 when he enlisted in the Marine Corps as a Heavy Machine Gunner. His service in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm marked the beginning of a distinguished military career. After experiencing a significant shift in his role due to troop reductions, Small transitioned to a new Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) in Supply Administration, and later, Purchasing and Contracting Specialist. This change not only defined his career but also set the stage for his future entrepreneurial endeavors

"I always knew I wanted to own my own business," Small reflects. "The question was when and how. My entrepreneurial journey truly began in January 2017 when I founded Copperwater Consulting, Inc , while still working as a civilian employee with the Navy in San Diego."

The Catalyst for Change

“The drive to start Copperwater Consulting was ignited by personal hardships. Long commutes and the toll of sitting at a desk exacerbated Small's military disabilities and PTSD symptoms. After several near-miss freeway accidents and mounting stress, Small made a pivotal decision in 2016 to pursue entrepreneurship full-time. The commute and stress were impacting my quality of life," Small explains "I decided it was time to take a chance on my business idea I started Copperwater Consulting as a professional hobby until I could transition fully from my Navy career."

Self-Reliance and Innovation

“Small's journey was marked by a lack of traditional mentorship. Instead, he drew inspiration from consultants he knew personally and those he followed on YouTube "I didn't have a mentor specifically guiding me," he says. "I wanted to create a blueprint for others in similar circumstances, to show that success is achievable. I believe in trusting myself and my own ideas "

Copperwater Consulting's mission is clear: to assist veteran-owned and small businesses in achieving efficiency and compliance while advancing in government contracting and grants Small's goal is to help others realize their business ownership dreams and achieve self-sufficiency.

Overcoming Challenges

One of the most significant challenges Small faced was managing cash flow during the early stages of his business "There were times when all my accounts were empty, and I was behind on my mortgage," he recalls "To overcome this, I sought other opportunities and took on a role as a Government Contracting Business Consultant with Skyway Acquisition, LLC."

This role not only provided financial stability but also led to Small's current position as VP of Sales and a member of Skyway Acquisition's leadership team.

Milestones and Success

A standout achievement for Small was winning a fiveyear service contract with Riverside County in 2022 to provide Business Consultant Services for the Coachella Valley Small Business Development Center (SBDC) "This contract allowed me to mentor and train small business owners across a broad region," Small proudly states. "From Orange County to the Coachella Valley, I help clients with business formation, compliance, planning, and expanding into government contracting."

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Small advises new entrepreneurs to thoroughly understand and execute the formal steps of starting a business, including entity types, licenses, and tax implications. "Proper compliance from the start prevents future distractions and complications," he says

Lessons and Resilience

The most important lesson Small has learned is to rely on his own judgment and creativity "Betting on myself has been the key to my success," he says "While outside advice can be helpful, pursuing and achieving your own ideas is what truly matters."

Small views setbacks as opportunities for learning rather than losses "I see 'L's as Learns," he explains "Every setback is a chance to gain valuable insights that improve my effectiveness as an entrepreneur."

For Small, success is measured by cash flow and goal achievement. "Cash flow is crucial for covering basic operations," he explains "I focus on setting and achieving specific goals to ensure growth and profitability. Being laser-focused and intentional about my work increases my productivity and success."

Looking back, Small wishes he had better understood the differences between S-Corporations and CCorporations. "I initially incorporated as a CCorporation, which caused issues with accessing funds," he recalls. "I later corrected this to an SCorporation, but it would have been better to start with the right entity from the beginning."

Small's desired legacy through his business is one of service, connection, and empowerment. "I want to provide lasting resources that help individuals connect with opportunities, enrich their families, and empower their communities "

Keyani explains When one of her favorite hair products was discontinued, she took matters into her own hands and formulated her own. This pivotal moment set off a domino effect that ultimately led to the creation of her business.

Keyani’s love for the beauty industry was instilled in her from a young age by her mother and two childhood hairstylists. Her mother taught her how to braid when she was just 12 years old, and Keyani spent countless hours observing her hairstylists, practicing what she saw them do. However, his work was met with unexpected resistance Despite the success of his project, he struggled to gain support from his university professors, which ultimately led him to realize the value of his research.

“I tried to structure my thesis around the project but couldn’t get any professors to advise me. It became clear that I owned all my research, and that’s when I saw myself as a business ”

A Mission to Clean and Protect Forests

The mission behind TreeCulture is to address the neglected state of many vegetative communities— forests left alone without herbivores to maintain them. Over time, these areas become overgrown, unhealthy, and prone to wildfires. Moshe’s method involves cleaning up long-neglected forests with hand tools, reducing fire hazards, and promoting vigorous growth. The final step? Bringing in herbivores to maintain the land’s health.

Challenges in Changing the System

One of Moshe’s greatest challenges has been navigating the complex system of land ownership and management “All the open spaces around towns are controlled by multiple jurisdictions and overlapping authorities,” Moshe explains. “Getting them to do something new, especially something non-standard, is extremely difficult ” Although Moshe hasn’t fully overcome these challenges yet, he remains hopeful that as climate change worsens and wildfire risks increase, authorities will turn to solutions like TreeCulture to address the problem at its root

Early Success and Future Aspirations

Moshe’s first major milestone was securing a paid proof-of-concept demonstration on Palomar Mountain, California. “That was a huge moment for me, seeing my method applied and validated.”

For Moshe, success would mean being able to quit his day job and focus on TreeCulture full-time “Supporting myself solely through this business would be the start of success,” he says. However, the journey has also taught him to manage his expectations “Keep expectations from others low, no matter what they say or how excited they get It protects you emotionally when things don’t pan out.”

Balancing a day job with running TreeCulture is no small feat. Moshe works from 6 A.M. to 2:30 P.M. and spends any free time working on his business. “Some days I pick up my kids or make dinner, and I dedicate Sundays to working on TreeCulture Occasionally, I’ll take time off from my day job for meetings or project work.”
