Welcome Welcome all to The Roses' summer programme. We’ve well and truly shaken the shackles of the pandemic with this one – it’s our most eclectic yet! There’s belly laughs galore as we bring you (Almost) Treasure Island – an outdoor comedy about an archaeologist desperately trying to convince the world that Stevenson’s famous story was fact not fiction; plus a massive selection of brilliant comedians. Poignant moments are provided by Chris McGlade as he brings his brilliant comedy about the murder of his father; and Justin Walker talks about his incredible experience of a journey to Jerusalem. Then there’s dinosaurs, magic, and Greek myths. I hope you’re as excited as I am about this thrilling selection of entertainment. If you would like to Get Creative yourself there’s plenty for you to get involved in. We are particularly excited to announce the launch of Roses Young Creatives – a new group for 5 - 19 year olds. If you know a budding film maker, actor, or social media star you can find out more on page 4. Finally, a huge thank you to all our supporters and our wonderful volunteer team. The Roses is in a great place right now, and it’s all down to our incredible community.

Straight Line Crazy

Prima Facie

Much Ado About Nothing

A new play by David Hare Directed by Nicholas Hytner Ralph Fiennes leads the cast in this blazing account of the most powerful man in New York, a master manipulator whose legacy changed the city forever. For forty years, Robert Moses exploited those in office through a mix of charm and intimidation, creating parks, bridges and 627 miles of expressway to connect the people to the great outdoors. But, he was faced with resistance by protest groups campaigning for a very different idea of what the city should become. Broadcast live from the Bridge Theatre in London.

Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) makes her West End debut in the UK premiere of Suzie Miller’s award-winning play. Tessa is a young, brilliant barrister. She has worked her way up from working class origins to be at the top of her game; defending; cross examining and winning. An unexpected event forces her to confront the lines where the patriarchal power of the law, burden of proof and morals diverge. Prima Facie takes us to the heart of where emotion and experience collide with the rules of the game. Justin Martin directs this solo tour de force, captured live from the intimate Harold Pinter Theatre in London’s West End.

Katherine Parkinson (The IT Crowd) and John Heffernan (Dracula) lead the cast in Shakespeare’s romcom of sun, sea and mistaken identity. The legendary family-run Hotel Messina on the Italian Riveria has been visited by artists, celebrities and royalty. But when the owner’s daughter weds a dashing young soldier, not all guests are in the mood for love. A string of scandalous deceptions soon surround not only the young couple, but also the adamantly single Beatrice and Benedick. The Simon & Garfunkel Story Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein II pioneered a flair that was all their own in the golden age of musical theatre. From 1940 to Hammerstein’s death in 1960, this musical duo dominated the musical stage and big screen with hits such as South Pacific and Cinderella, and their mastery of creating stories through music that lived beyond the page or even the performance is much of what keeps their work alive and well today. More than those of any composer or lyricist writing for the stage, the songs of Rodgers & Hammerstein have become an integral part of our everyday lives. Some Enchanted Evening is an enthralling revue of some of their most stunning compositions and places five performers in a theatrical setting: first ‘backstage,’ where the songs are sung as personal interplay, and then ‘onstage,’ where the songs are presented to an audience. Some Enchanted Evening will delight you with a glorious parade of genuine hits. A co-production by Barn Theatre & Everyman Theatre Directed by Paul Milton

Spiers & Boden

Totally Tina

Described by The Guardian as ‘the finest instrumental duo on the traditional scene’, Spiers & Boden first rocketed onto the music scene in 2001, quickly winning a clutch of BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and going on to form and front the extraordinarily successful folk big band Bellowhead.

Come shake a tail feather with the UK’s supreme Tina – Justine Riddoch – and her talented cast of dazzling dancing girls in sequins, feathers and diamonds.

Rich Hall's Hoedown Deluxe

The duo reformed in 2021 after a seven-year hiatus, arriving with a brand new album ‘Fallow Ground’ which went on to reach number 3 in September ‘21’s Official Folk Albums Chart and was a Mojo top 10 folk album of 2021. "It’s all exquisitely played – the pair are still the dons" The Observer

This breathtaking recreation of a live Tina Turner concert celebrates the golden anniversary of the Queen of Rock ’n’ Roll’s signature tune Proud Mary. Tina’s noholds-barred take of the song established a reputation for fearsome live performances – and those never-ending legs! She’s got the looks, she’s got the moves, but most of all, she’s got THE voice. Join an army of loyal fans for a truly authentic, fun-packed musical spectacular!

Ever-evolving, ever-changing, Rich’s combination of keen acerbic stand-up combined with spit and sawdust altcountry lyricism is a “win-win” (Guardian). Fans keep returning because this show goes where other comedians wouldn’t dare: Barrow-in-Furness for example. Rich’s acclaimed BBC4 documentaries and his Radio 4 series Election Breakdown have established a whole new legion of followers. He’s also a stalwart of QI and Have I Got News For You. Gut-busting, rib-tickling, toe-tapping, and sh*t-kicking, Rich Hall’s Hoedown Deluxe covers the full anatomical spectrum.

Cate Cody

GO NOW! The Music of the Moody Blues

Tasha Leaper as Madonna

“I’m old-fashioned...” sings Cate Cody in a hauntingly beautiful voice that has been compared to a young Peggy Lee. She might well be describing herself, because these days it’s very rare to find a jazz chanteuse with such authentic phrasing, who genuinely understands the nuances, and is capable of capturing the idiomatic gradations and modulations required to swing. For this special session, Cate is delighted to be accompanied by Tom Kincaid (currently pianist for Elkie Brooks) and double bassist Tom Mark, both the first choice of many musicians.

Gordy Marshall toured and recorded with The Moody Blues for twenty-five years. Together with Mick Wilson (lead singer of 10CC for twenty years) they present a super-group of world class musicians, singers and songwriters and meticulously recreate the elegance of a Moody Blues Concert. In this show, all the classic hits are celebrated, including Nights in White Satin, Go Now and a show-stealing rendition of Eve of the War from Jeff Wayne’s The War of the Worlds.

Into The Groove, Holiday, Like A Prayer, Vogue, Beautiful Stranger, Hung Up, True Blue, Material Girl… The hits just keep on coming in this dynamic tribute to the undisputed Queen of Pop, Madonna! Tasha Leaper will take you back through the years performing all of Madonna's greatest hits, she has the looks, the voice AND the moves to make for a truly authentic experience. With a live band and professional dancers this show gives you replica dance routines, iconic costume changes and overall a high energy concert experience.

The trio will be performing an eclectic mix of gems from the 1920s to the 1950s.

Joining Gordy and Mick on stage are Tim Maple (Leona Lewis guitarist and X-factor Live MD), Malcolm Moore (James Blunt) and Patrick Duffin (Jersey Boys).

Drama

Walking To Jerusalem 2017 marked three major anniversaries in the Palestinian struggle: the centenary of the Balfour declaration, the fiftieth year of Israel’s military occupation of the Palestinian territories, and the tenth year of the blockade of Gaza.

Comedy

Chris McGlade: Forgiveness A fiercely powerful and critically acclaimed show about a brutally shocking story; Chris’ father was murdered in 2011. How do you forgive your father’s murderer? Only Chris knows… Inspiring uproarious laughter, tears of sincerity and standing ovations, Chris’ conscientious comedy and cutting-edge poetry makes for a truly unforgettable show.

To change the record after a century of injustice, a pilgrimage set out to walk from London to Jerusalem – in penance, solidarity, and hope. This was the inspiration of award-winning playwright and actor Justin Butcher, who worked with human rights charity Amos Trust to mount the Just Walk to Jerusalem, June – November 2017. Calling for full equal rights for all in the Holy Land, more than one hundred walkers took part. Nine walked the whole way. This is their story – walking journals and travellers’ tales on paths of pilgrimage and conquest, from monasteries and mountain passes to Bedouin camps and desert wadis across Europe and the Middle East – brought to life in a dynamic new show.

Live Programme

Saltlines A Portrait of the South West Coast Path in Old Songs and New Words The Salt Path is Raynor Winn’s Sunday Times bestselling memoir of walking the South West Coast Path in its entirety… a walk that was an impulsive response to unexpected circumstances which left her and her husband, Moth, homeless. It has won global praise for its 'against all odds' uplifting message, and its frank exploration of the reality of homelessness. The Salt Path is one couple's story, but such a well-trodden path must hold many more stories of loss, love and the natural world. This seed of an idea has developed into an exciting collaboration between Raynor and The Gigspanner Big Band, a collective of some of the most highprofile names on the British folk scene. Together, Raynor and the Gigspanner Big Band will celebrate, in traditional songs and newly written words, this “630 uninterrupted miles of coastline, crossing wild headlands with the calls of oystercatchers, and the smell of salt laden air ever present” (Raynor Winn ~ Ambassador of the South West Coast Path).
