Welcome It’s all go here at The Roses as I write this. We have just helped open Tewkesbury Festival of Lights in our town's glorious Abbey, the venue is busy every day with our weekly clubs, panto rehearsals are about to begin and we are gearing up for an extraordinary 2022. As well as a thrilling programme of live events, The Roses is leading a Tewkesbury culture project called Stitch Story. We want every town resident – that’s at least 15,000 people – to come and sew a stitch on a new giant tapestry celebrating the rich history of our town and tell us stories of Tewkesbury past and present. But first, Christmas! My favourite time of year. King Arthur: The Panto lives up to the reputation of the writing team – BAFTA award-winning comedy writer Maurice Gran and Nick Wilkes – it’s one of the funniest scripts I’ve ever read! We also have a brilliant season of films and some fabulous live music. None of this could happen without our wonderful supporters, donors and audiences. A big thank you to you all! I look forward to warmly welcoming into our venue, and wish you a happy and prosperous New Year.

Appeal

Since March 2020, The Roses has been through many challenges and huge change. Because of this our future is uncertain and we are asking for your support.

Can you help The Roses recover and thrive? Over the last 45 years The Roses has been the centre of culture in Tewkesbury. We are the largest cultural organisation - and only theatre – in the borough, and one of the largest employers on the High Street. Run by 17 staff and over 100 volunteers, in normal times we welcome over 80,000 visitors per year and are a muchloved community centre that provides a space for people to find joy and creativity. Without us, thousands of people will be deprived of access to live theatre, live dance, live music, film and denied participation in projects for their cultural enrichment and wellbeing.

Why we matter As well as the eclectic mix of theatre, music, dance, talks and a nationally renowned independent film programme you see on our stage, we are nationally recognised for our participatory work with our local community and young people with a focus on creative skills and wellbeing. We host weekly and monthly creative groups including a writers group and a choir; plus knitting and painters groups, all providing vital social and creative activities every month to over 200 older people. Next year we will launch a new participatory department and a new group for 8-25 year olds that will provide a range of opportunities to learn performance, theatre-making, film making, gaming and backstage skills, and provide Arts Awards. We also been selected by the British Film Institute as a member of the Young Audience Generator Scheme, and have been awarded a grant to work with 16-30 year olds to improve our programme, branding and venue to be more accessible and usable for young people. xxBox 4 BoxOffice: Office:01684 01684295074 295074

It will also help us stage King Arthur: The Panto! that we were devastated to have to postpone from 2020. Whatever you can give, every penny will have a big impact and help our beloved theatre thrive. Thank you for your support.

Leopoldstadt A new play by Tom Stoppard Directed by Patrick Marber At the beginning of the 20th century, Leopoldstadt was the old, crowded Jewish quarter of Vienna, Austria. But Hermann Merz, a factory owner and baptised Jew now married to Catholic Gretl, has moved up in the world. We follow his family’s story across half a century, passing through the convulsions of war, revolution, impoverishment, annexation by Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. A company of 40 actors represent each generation of the family in this epic, but intimate play.

The Book of Dust Hex – La Belle Sauvage Book by Tanya Ronder By Philip Pullman Adapted by Bryony Lavery Directed by Nicholas Hytner Set twelve years before the epic His Dark Materials trilogy, this gripping adaptation revisits Philip Pullman’s fantastical world in which waters are rising and storms are brewing. Eighteen years after his ground breaking production of His Dark Materials at the National Theatre, director Nicholas Hytner returns to Pullman’s parallel universe. Broadcast live from London’s Bridge Theatre.

Music by Jim Fortune Lyrics by Rufus Norris

A vividly original retelling of Sleeping Beauty, a mythic, big-hearted new musical that goes beyond the waking kiss. Deep in the wood, a lonely fairy longs for someone to bless. When she is summoned to the palace to help the princess sleep, her dream turns into a nightmare and her blessing becomes a curse. Soon, she is plunged into a frantic, hundredyear quest to somehow make everything right.

Stitch Story is an ambitious project for Tewkesbury residents to add their stitches and stories, leaving their mark on our large community Embroidery. We want to record our social history of Tewkesbury as well as some of its more well known events in thread! Who is Stitch Story for? Absolutely everyone! You don't have to be an experienced embroiderer, or have ever picked up a needle to get involved. Our aim is for all Tewkesbury residents to feel part of the project and want to contribute. Stitch Story is being supported by Tewkesbury Cultural Consortium which is made up of lots of local partners. Its mission is to grow the visibility and connectivity of Tewkesbury’s rich and talented cultural sector to make it more accessible and engaging. Where can I attend a workshop or leave a stitch? We will be running workshops for all ages and abilities in and around Tewkesbury from early 2022. Look out for pop up events at the town hall, the market and in local community venues. We'll also be happy to come to you or your group - send us an email (details below) to find out more! What does the workshop involve? A free, artist led, 2 hour workshop will come to your venue and will involve an introduction to the history of Tewkesbury, time to add your ideas to the design and features to be included in the embroidered panel, and then your opportunity to add your stitches. Drop in sessions will be more informal with a chance to sit, sew and discuss the project and history of Tewkesbury.

"We are looking forward to bringing local stories to life, there is much more to Tewkesbury than the historical headlines. The workshops and drop in sessions will give people the opportunity to share their Tewkesbury and leave stitches and stories for generations to come!" Jo Teague, Artist

Megan Dunford, Our Community Engagement Producer, will be working with Jo Teague to support everyone who wants to take part to have a go! We are happy to visit your venue or organisation to run a free embroidery session or workshop. Simply pop Megan an email at megan.dunford@rosestheatre.org for more information

The Story Of Guitar Heroes

Jive Talkin’

Simon Kempston

Join us for an awe-inspiring, dynamic show which transports you through time: from the 1950’s with artistes such as Chuck Berry and Hank Marvin from The Shadows, including gifted legends such as Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page, through to modern day players such as the great Brian May and the electrifying Steve Vai, to name but a few! Presented by guitar virtuoso Phil Walker, this show’s extraordinarily talented band uses over 30 guitars to recreate and accurately reproduce the sound and ambiance of each guitar hero, making for a truly sensational and enjoyable evening.

Jive Talkin’ is renowned as the original and very best Bee Gees tribute show, and the only Bee Gees tribute show that have actually performed with the original Bee Gees. As with the original band, Jive Talkin’ is very much a family affair, with brothers Gary and Darren Simmons taking the roles of Maurice and Barry Gibb, with Darren’s son Jack joining the group in 2014 and taking on the role of Robin Gibb. The guys are supported musically by a four piece band with Guitar, Violin, Cello and Drums, to ensure that every note in every song is just right. “Absolutely Brilliant” Maurice Gibb “WOW” Barry Gibb

The Manfreds The 60s group Manfred Mann is considered one of the finest and most respected bands from that era. Their numerous hits were R&B based with an undercurrent of jazz - a very unusual but winning combination of playing style and substance.

A Foreigner's Journey

That’ll Be The Day

Wildwood Jack

Last year A Foreigner's Journey proudly won both the “UK’s Number 1 Tribute to Foreigner” and the “UK’s Number 1 Tribute to Journey” awards at the National Tribute Music Awards.

That’ll be the Day reaches another milestone this year as it celebrates its 35th anniversary!

Featuring the incredible vocals and stage presence of Andrea Ojano, and cherry picking the very best and most iconic songs from each of the two bands, to create a carefully balanced set list, including bonafide rock classics such as the massive anthem Don’t Stop Believin’, Cold As Ice, Separate Ways, Juke Box Hero, Feels Like The First Time, to gentler power ballads like the hits I Want To Know What Love Is and Waiting For A Girl Like You.

From humble beginnings, the show has grown into a “must see” attraction all over the UK, coming up with a new production from its multitalented cast year after year. Unashamedly nostalgic, TBTD takes its audience on a rollercoaster ride through the ‘golden’ age of Rock and Roll and Pop. Guaranteed a great night out, this is truly the best ‘feel good’ show on the road.

Wildwood Jack are a totally unique acoustic guitar and ukulele duo from Kent. Having sold their home in 2013 to hit the road and tour the world they bring a heartwarming and adventurous spirit to their music and to audiences wherever they play. The quality of their musicianship together with songs that sparkle with the journeys of a life on the road will be sure to uplift you. Contemporary folk music with a twist of bluegrass and world music played with outstanding fingerstyle guitar and ukulele.

"This is an accomplished duo. Not only is the musicianship excellent, the vocal delivery is spot on" BBC Radio Wales
