The Roses Review Welcome Wow, what a year! I am sure I am not alone in thinking how fast this year has gone by and it seems like only yesterday that we were just about to embark on last year’s panto. The Roses has been through a difficult year and so as we move into this year’s panto season, I would just like to say a big thank you on behalf of everyone at The Roses to all of our Friends, Patrons, business partners and customers for your ongoing support.

The Roses’ Christmas Raffle Support The Roses and win one of many amazing prizes This year our raffle has been very generously supported by a range of local businesses, with prizes including cash prizes of £500 and £100 (donated by raffle sponsors Alexander Burn); a year long film pass for two people; a £50 Marks & Spencer voucher; gift vouchers from many local restaurants including Zitto e Mangia, Crystal Rivers, The Bay Tree, The Royal Hop Pole and Crumpets; family days out at Cotswold Farm Park, the International Centre for Birds Of Prey and Eastnor Castle; a free MOT from Clive Woolford Motors plus more still being added.

Enclosed are two books of raffle tickets. We would be extremely grateful if you would consider either buying them yourself or selling them on to family and friends. We know that many of you will already have bought tickets, so if you have and you’d rather not purchase any more, we do understand! We would, however, appreciate you returning the unsold tickets to us either by dropping them into the theatre or returning them in the enclosed freepost envelope.

Profile: Patrick Bliss What is your role at The Roses?

For the last 10 years I have been the Film Programmer.

I have the job of selecting the best titles from over 800 films released in the UK every year, programme them in around live shows and write brochure copy. I also develop and fundraise for projects around film such as this year’s Magic of Cinema. My role here requires me to immerse myself in the world of film, keeping track of new releases and developments at international Film Festivals. There is a certain amount of crystal ball gazing as I often need to predict which films are going to be the must-sees, award contenders and Roses favourites before they have been released, been reviewed by critics or even have trailers out. I am also enjoying doing some live programming while we are between Directors.

How would you like The Roses to develop?

We have challenging times ahead, but it is exciting to have the opportunity to reinvent ourselves and attract new audiences. Cinema, and the Arts as a whole, is facing challenging times as audiences gravitate towards small screen entertainment and spend more time on social media. Tewkesbury is lucky to have The Roses and we need to increase our exposure to younger people and build on our experiences with Take Part and Youth Theatre to find ways of bringing them into the building. It’s still a long way off, but I’m excited about the prospect of a new studio space as part of phase two of our development. This would allow us a lot more scope to bring films in earlier and increase the diversity of our programme.

Why did you choose to work at the Roses?

Having worked for venues who screened film predominantly from DVD/Blu-Ray, The Roses was the first “proper” cinema that I had the opportunity to work for, showing films from 35mm which was still prevalent at the time, and had also recently acquired a digital projector via the BFI’s Digital Screen Network.

Authentic and future proof, and in a lovely part of the world. How could I refuse?

What do you like to do when you are not at The Roses?

I represent The Roses and other venues in the South West at various conferences, festivals and events in the UK and sit on the Strategy Group for the BFI Film Hub South West. When I am not in front of a screen, you can find me down by the river Severn, fishing rod in hand doing a spot of bankside meditation! l have recently re-discovered my passion for travel, most recently with trips to Senegal and The Gambia and am about to continue my West African odyssey by venturing into the little known country, Guinea Bissau. No screens, no stages, maybe even no electricity, the perfect antidote to sitting in dark rooms!

Where have you come from?

That’s a long story… Although I wanted to work in film for a long time, it took me a long time to find my way into the industry. I was born into a farming family and have previously worked in the music business as a gig promoter in London, a TV audience researcher, a fundraiser for development and environmental charities and a short stint with NASA as a space shuttle pilot. I seem to have unwittingly developed a speciality in programming film in multi-arts venues in small rural towns. Before The Roses I worked (and still do, I’m part

News At The Roses We are sad to announce to departure of our Technical Manager Rob South, who is leaving The Roses to emigrate to Norway alongside girlfriend Sara Kristine Lakselv. Many of you will know Sara from her role on The Roses’ coffee shop.

Rob and Sara have been hugely popular

and hard-working members of The Roses team and will be greatly missed.

Rob is being replaced by Paul Smith, who will be a great asset to the team and has a wealth of experience, having worked in places such as The Sydney Opera House.

One Year GEM Anniversary The Going the Extra Mile (GEM) Project is committed to help move people closer towards education, training, volunteering or work, including self-employment.

This programme will reconnect people with their local services through their communities and ultimately help them achieve their desired outcome, whether through a working or educational related route. The GEM Project understands that everyone is unique, with different needs and requirements, impacting on their step into the world of employment, education or training.

Recent GEM workshops Working with the Independence Trust, which is a charity that supports people to strengthen their emotional and physical wellbeing, GEM helped to deliver a Five Ways to Wellbeing course at The Roses throughout September and October. Five Ways to Wellbeing are evidence-based public health messages, which aim to improve mental health and wellbeing. Using GEM funding to provide a venue and refreshments at The Roses, the course ran over six weeks and included the topics Connect With Your Community, Be Active, Keep Learning, Mindfulness and Giving.

The GEM project works with participants to help them overcome barriers to employment or education. Mental well-being, and in particular confidence plays a significant factor which this course helps to address. One GEM participant stated at the end of the course:

“I had never heard of the Five Ways to Wellbeing, so I didn’t even know until you organised it that it would be a useful life skills course. Also until I came on the course, I didn’t realise how much I could get from it.”

This course is the second collaboration between the Independence Trust and the GEM project at The Roses - the first being in Winchcombe earlier in the year. Following the success of these, it is hoped more will follow.

The GEM Project is jointly funded by the Big Lottery Fund and European Social Fund.

Community Corner in assocation with Barnwood Trust Barnwood Trust is a Gloucestershire-based charity whose vision is to create the best possible environment in the county for disabled people and people with mental health challenges to make the most of their lives.

To support this, they have a range of grants that provide more support to activities across all their programmes.

Some grants are for individuals. Some for organisations. Some for groups of people living near each other. What all the grants have in common is that they help to build belonging in Gloucestershire.

Barnwood Trust is linked with The Roses through the hosting of a Community Builder for Tewkesbury.

Barnwood Trust’s latest addition to their grant programme will give families the opportunity to spend some leisure time together, whether that is a family trip to The Roses for cinema or theatre productions, or any other activity where cost might be an issue. See details at www.barnwoodtrust.org/grants/grants-for-individuals The Family Leisure Grant helps fund day trips and leisure activities for families to enjoy together. This can be wildlife park entry, theatre vouchers, tickets to local live music events, art gallery and museum entry, membership to heritage sites or sports season tickets.

Families can apply for a one-off grant – up to £50 per family member – if they can show us that their family includes one person with a long-term disability or mental health problem that affects quality of life, lives in Gloucestershire and would find it difficult to afford.

Christmas Market

Santa’s Grotto

At the time of writing this we are all busy finalising plans for The Roses’ 2017 Christmas Market. This is a lovely addition to The Roses calendar of events and we are pleased to announce that the date for next year’s market will be Saturday 17 November 2018.

Once again we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Halfords Traditional Butchers for sponsoring the event. We would also like to thank all of the stall holders and our team of volunteers.

For the first time, The Roses will be inviting local children to come and meet Santa Claus this Christmas. We are excited to offer the chance to meet and receive a gift from Santa in his grotto. Entry into the grotto costs just £5 and includes a gift for each child. Thank you to Tewkesbury Garden Centre for donating the funds to enable us to help Santa to build his grotto.

Tried And Tested - Chase Distillery Evening Friday 3 November saw The Roses host a tasting evening with Chase Distillery. Tilly, the brand ambassador for Chase, delighted guests with an array of delicious tipples.

The staff favourite was the espresso vodka. This was amazing poured straight, over ice. Tilly has promised to return (hopefully in April) with another selection, so keep an eye out in forthcoming publications to book your space. You will not want to miss out! Chase very kindly donated the stock for this tasting, which enabled the evening to raise over £540 for The Roses.

Following the success of the tasting and feedback received from customers The Roses will now be stocking a selection of the Chase spirits behind the bar, available to purchase each time you visit us.

Meanwhile, our next tasting events are The Spirit Of Christmas on Friday 1 December and the popular Burns Night Whisky Tasting on Friday 26 January. See you there!

Brand history and values •

Chase are a family owned, single-estate distillery, creating fine spirits since 2008 from the produce grown on their farm in Herefordshire. William Chase, the former owner and founder of Tyrrells crisps, founded the family-run business using ingredients sourced on-site at Rosemaund Farm.
