As the nights draw in and Tewkesbury turns towards Christmas, I’m delighted to welcome you to another packed season at The Roses. This year holds a particular milestone for me: Sleeping Beauty marks my pantomime directorial debut here at The Roses. Pantomime is often a child’s very first experience of live theatre—that moment the house lights dim and the story begins is one many of us never forget. It’s a joyful, ridiculous, unmissable part of British culture, and for so many families it’s as much a Christmas tradition as the tree or the turkey. I can’t wait to share it with you. We’re also delighted to bring world-class cinema to Tewkesbury through our Royal Ballet & Opera and Event Cinema programmes. From the Royal Opera House to the MET Opera, audiences here can experience the very best of international theatre, opera and ballet without leaving town—proof that you don’t need to travel to London or New York to see extraordinary work. Our Creative Workshops continue to open up new ways for people of all ages to try something new, from brush calligraphy to festive wreath making, alongside the warm, welcoming space of our Memory Cafe for our community. And as a new term begins, our Roses Young Creatives go from strength to strength, with exciting new initiatives launching alongside our regular sessions. Quinn Kelsey is the Scottish king haunted by the ghosts of his murderous ascent to the throne, opposite Lise Davidsen as the power-mad Lady Macbeth, whose ruinous ambition damns them both. Following past triumphs in Verdi’s signature baritone roles, Kelsey is joined by tenor Freddie De Tommaso as the heroic Macduff, in a penetrating new production by Louisa Proske, conducted by Met Music Director Yannick Nezet-Seguin.

In the seedy underbelly of 18th-century Paris, money is king, and even love itself can be bought for the right price. Manon is caught between twin desires when she falls for the student Des Grieux, torn between an honourable life and the riches promised by Parisian society. Kenneth MacMillan’s 1974 adaptation of Abbe Prevost’s novel remains one of The Royal Ballet’s most powerful and devastating dramas.

Under the oppressive heat of the Spanish sun, the fiercely independent Carmen attracts the attention of Don José. She warns him not to fall in love with her, but his obsession knows no bounds. Damiano Michieletto’s searing production casts scorching light on the lust, violence and destructive desire of Bizet’s ever-popular opera, conducted by Sesto Quatrini.
