With many of the most critically and commercially popular films of the last few years being musicals, The Roses are thrilled to decamp to the suitably period setting of Tewkesbury's George Watson Memorial Hall to bring you a series of screenings and events to celebrate the rich diversity of this most enduring of genres. From the classic MGM musicals through to the pop and rock infused modern musicals, join us on a toe-tapping tour through the archives.

Belle Epoque Night

Moulin Rouge (12A) Built in 1909, the Watson Hall is the perfect venue to travel back in time to Belle Epoque era Paris for this immersive screening of Baz Luhrmann’s ravishing Moulin Rouge.

Cocktails, cabaret seating, live music from The Flowers of Paris and a few surprises make for a unique and very special event. Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman star in the story of a poet who is drawn into the fantastic underworld the the famous night club, where he falls in love with a glamorous courtesan. Dressing up encouraged!

Pennies From Heaven (15) The big screen adaptation of Dennis Potters ground breaking musical drama features a lip-syncing, tap-dancing Steve Martin (and boy, can he!) and some of the most lavish and entertaining production numbers since the great Busby Berkley.

The story of a sheet music salesman in 1930’s America who retreats into musical fantasies, it features songs from Bing Crosby, Connee Boswell and Fred Astaire and is imbued with a nostalgia for classic MGM musicals.

School Of Rock (PG)

A touching modern-day acoustic/folk musical about an Irish busker and an immigrant Czech girl who meet, fall in love and make beautiful music together.

Shot for peanuts on the streets of Dublin, the film became an international hit and won an Oscar for best original song.

Followed by live music from pupils of Tewkesbury School Unleash your inner rock star at The Roses’ School of Rock, where Tewkesbury School band Primordial Soup will entertain us after the screening of Richard Linklater’s feel good comedy.

Loaded with classics from Zeppelin, Hendrix, AC/DC and many more, this inspirational film proves that even the most introverted child can become a rock star.

For a group of young Bohemian artists struggling to survive in 1980’s NYC, paying the rent is not the only problem they have to contend with. Loosely based on Puccini’s La Boheme, Rent takes on themes of addiction, sexuality and HIV/AIDS, while remaining a celebration of individuality.

The evening also features a performance from Cheltenham Operatic and Dramatic Society.

A Star is Born (U) Following Renee Zellweger’s stunning performance in Judy and Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga’s recent update on this enduring classic, what better time to revisit George Cukor’s 1954 adaptation. Oscar nominated Judy Garland and James Mason star in the story of an aspiring actress who fall for a washed up film star in a film bursting with memorable songs by Harold Arlen and George Gershwin.

Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Oscar winning epic is undoubtedly one of the most beloved musicals of all time and is a joy to see on the big screen.

A Taste of Bollywood in partnership with Rajshahi

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (PG)

One of the most expensive Indian films ever made, this lavish comedy drama stars the legendary Amitabh Bachchan as the head of a rich family and Bollywood heartthrob Shah Rukh Khan as his son, who is disowned by his father when he falls for a pretty girl of a lower caste. With fabulous music, set design, costumes and chromatography, it’s a spectacular blend of colour, emotion, love and family. If you’ve never seen a Bollywood film, this is a great place to start!
