Kenneth Branagh’s personal reflection on his childhood experience in 1960s Northern Ireland focuses on impressionistic nine-year-old Buddy, as he navigates his away towards adulthood during a time of sweeping socio-political change.

The story provides a child’s eye view on an adult world, as Buddy tempers the turmoil of The Troubles with his vivid imagination and love of cinema. The cinematography may be black and white, but the characters are full of colour.

As the layers begin to peel away, it exposes secrets and fragilities that they must share if they are to truly let each other in.

Parallel Mothers (15)

Pedro Almodovar's engrossing and vibrantly shot melodrama about two very different women whose lives intersect when they give birth on the same day. Although neither of the pregnancies were planned, Janis is delighted at this last chance at becoming a mother, whereas teenager Ana is scared and unsure of how she will cope. The birth of their daughters creates a strong bond between them.

Nightmare Alley (15)

Guillermo del Toro’s follow up to the multi-award winning The Shape of Water conjures up a noirish world of deception and duplicity as a charismatic carnival showman sets out to run con tricks on the wealthy elite of 1940s New York society. Utilising his mind reading act and talent for manipulating people with a few well-chosen words, he teams up with a mysterious psychiatrist with an elaborate plan to swindle a powerful businessman.

Acclaimed director Joanna Hogg, who came to The Roses with her debut film Unrelated, turns in her most assured work yet with this semi-autobiographical coming of age drama.

Newcomer Honor Swinton Byrne stars alongside her real-life mother Tilda Swinton as an impressionable film student in 80’s London, whose life is upended when she falls under the spell of a charismatic but deceitful older man. Beautifully observed and performed, it’s an absorbing exploration of an intense and destructive relationship that leads a young woman to find her voice as an artist.

The second part of Joanna Hogg’s semiautobiographical drama picks up where the first film left off, as Julie begins to untangle her fraught love for Anthony in her graduation film, sorting fact from his elaborately constructed fiction. The film within a film we see taking shape adds a further layer of meta representation to this intimate and finely calibrated story of Hogg’s awakening as a filmmaker, and features another beautifully understated performance from Honor Swinton Byrne, daughter of Tilda Swinton, who also reprises her role as Julie’s on screen mother.
