THE TIME TRAVELER’S SCHOOL

While I was sitting in my sister’s living room in Madison, Wisconsin, during spring break, my Skype alert rang. I recognized the ID and was excited to answer the request to video chat with my nine-month-old granddaughter Ada. Ada lives in Washington, D.C., where her mother, my daughter Amber, works at the National Science Foundation. I have to confess that these regular video chats seem like something from my boyhood cartoon-watching of The Jetsons, and at the same time, they are a joyful way to watch our grandchild grow.

“Happy Spring Break from the future,” my daughter said.

There was an hour’s time difference between us, and so I listened as my East Coast scientist daughter jokingly told me via video communication of the plans she had for Ada’s day. We laughed at Amber’s comment about calling from the future, and she discussed her sadness that, while technology had made it possible for me to see her and Ada in real time, she was still waiting for the flying cars The Jetsons had promised would be part of the future.

Thinking about the start of spring and the view from the future reminded me of a discussion I had with a head of school friend who shared that when we return from spring break, heads of school become time travelers. We find ourselves nearing the end of the current year actively engaged in planning for the next year; and if we are doing our job well, we are planning for the needs of the school five and 10 years into the future.

Returning to school on Monday, I found myself sitting at my desk working on next year’s enrollment data, the 2015/16 school calendar (yes, the calendar two years from now), staffing needs for the fall, space needs, and all the operational elements required for getting two campuses ready before September 2014. I looked at my calendar and reviewed the board committee meetings scheduled for the next couple of weeks, and discovered that my days would include discussions about budgets; fund raising; curriculum planning; board composition; school accreditation; strategic planning; and campus planning.

Pacing is a critical piece in the construction of a healthy school year.

Anyone who spends time in a school building can feel the rhythm of the year. There is an ebb and flow to the weeks of school as students and teachers complete projects, develop assessments and celebrate the journey.

Providing a healthy pace to a child’s day, week, month and school year is a significant administrative task. My body may be in 2014, but there are large portions of my days when I find my brain traveling into a variety of time zones. Finding balance by spending time with students, teachers and parents is the one element of my work that is grounding and enormously satisfying.

This year, I shared with our community — on three different occasions — the State of our School. It was an opportunity for me to take you along on my travels through time — to share where we have been, to talk about where we are, and to present the strategic vision guiding us toward our 75th anniversary in 2016, and beyond.

The recession our country entered in 2009 dramatically affected the economy of Southeastern Michigan, and many of our families continue to feel its effects. Through difficult decisions, the thoughtful stewardship of our board, and a steadfast commitment to our philosophy, The Roeper School is now seeing growth in our enrollment and retention numbers for the first time in four years. In fact, enrollment numbers in key entry points like Stage I and 6th grade are so strong that we anticipate being at capacity in these grade levels this September.

The school year itself has been filled with wonderful examples of our living our philosophy. So what exactly did we do? Here’s a small snapshot: we invested over 1.5 million dollars on new windows and interior spaces at our Birmingham campus; built a new Lower School playground outside the Domes; welcomed Colleen Potocki as our new Middle School Director; published our Educational Statement of Purpose; saw our boys Varsity Soccer team win a regional title; saw our Chess team expand to include the Middle School and bring home State Championship trophies; sent our Model UN team to Budapest; hosted

As we catch our breath and allow ourselves to reflect on the outstanding success we have had this year, I want to say thank you to our students, their families, and our fabulous faculty and staff who have helped to make all of these accomplishments and initiatives possible.

and visited students from the Netherlands; had our seniors help rebuild homes in New Orleans as part of their senior trip; published a new book with the help of Don Ambrose called The Roeper School: A Model for Holistic Development of High Ability that contained a collection of essays from teachers, students, administrators, alums, and educators in the field of gifted education; hosted the first Mariann Hoag Scholarship Dinner; supported conversations on equity and justice through sponsoring the film American Promise; hosted Debbie Roffman for a discussion on sexuality education and Alan November for a conversation on technology integration; welcomed our five-day-a-week Stage I program to the Domes where they can interact with our Stage II students; introduced a 9th Grade American Studies course that brings English and history together in an interdisciplinary-team-taught program; prepared to send our 9th grade to Washington, D.C., in June as a culmination of that program; hosted a SENG (Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted) workshop to train faculty and staff on supporting families of gifted children; continued our work with SEED (Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity); hosted the Association of Independent Michigan Schools conference; completed a search for a new Lower School Director; and welcomed over 100 new students to Roeper!

As we catch our breath and allow ourselves to reflect on the outstanding success we have had this year, I want to say thank you to our students, their families, and our fabulous faculty and staff who have helped to make all of these accomplishments and initiatives possible. This is a community that is extremely passionate about teaching and learning.

All that we accomplish stems from the ideas generated, and the curiosity and creativity that are nurtured in your homes and across our campuses.

When I joined the Roeper community two years ago, we had just completed our Strategic Plan. Like any good visionary document, the plan provided a summary of the areas we, as a community, wanted to address. A significant section of the plan talked about the capital needs for the school. As we approach our 75th Anniversary in 2016, the Board undertook a feasibility study to determine which of our capital needs we should address first, and whether we as a community had the interest and means to undertake such a significant challenge.

The Board contracted with the firm CCS out of Chicago to lead the feasibility study and to gather information from our community.

The information you shared with us led the Board to approve moving forward with a project to create collaborative spaces, focus on our commitment to individualized education, and invest in our future through the growth of our endowment.

The Board contracted with an architecture firm, HMFH from Cambridge, Massachusetts, to design the schematics for a project that fills the Birmingham campus courtyard. Working with faculty, students, and staff members at Birmingham, we are studying how we use our space, what needs we have, and how our space can better reflect the interdependent way we live our philosophy.

We look forward to sharing drawings with the community in June, and celebrating our 75th Anniversary in 2016 by transforming our 6th – 12th grade campus into a space where, architecturally, form truly follows function.

This has been an amazing year, and there are so many wonderful projects and strategic initiatives in process. Yet, in the end, this is still a school community that remains grounded by staying true to the philosophical teachings that George and Annemarie Roeper established. As our core tenets remind us, “We exist to guide the growth of the individual intellectually, emotionally, ethically and physically within the context of an engaged community.” This commitment to developing students who are self-actualized and who value and embrace our interdependence guides our conversations, shapes our plans, and directs our decision making.

In the next few weeks, if you see me looking a little puzzled, or if I put the wrong date on a paper, please remember that time travel is a bit unsettling.

I hope the end of this school year brings you the time to recall fondly the accomplishments and challenges you met this year, time to passionately embrace and celebrate the place you are today, and time to dream with vision about the future.

Who knows, maybe — just maybe — by the time we celebrate our 75th anniversary in 2016, Amber and Ada will be visiting me in their brand-new flying car. f

STEWARDSHIP

As The Roeper School nears its 75th anniversary in 2016, we should reflect upon the stewardship provided by all those who helped us reach this milestone.

First and foremost were our founders, George and Annemarie Roeper. Without their vision and stewardship, the school would not be here today. They recognized that, to fulfill their dreams, they would need to entrust the care of the school to others so that it would exist beyond their lifetimes.

This demonstrates the ultimate form of stewardship.

The Board of Trustees of The Roeper School is now the primary steward of the gift we received from George and Annemarie Roeper. One of its primary obligations is to be the caretaker of the Roeper Philosophy and to make certain that the school operates according to its principles. Although the Board may have the greatest responsibility of all stewards, it is generally not the most visible to the Roeper Community or the public.

The most visible stewards are the Head of School, Directors, Faculty and Administration. These are the people who, by their acts and actions every day, carry out the Roeper Philosophy and take responsibility for educating our students. Our families have entrusted them to care for the most precious people in their lives. The guidance and direction they provide to the students changes their lives and futures, which is the essence of stewardship.

There are, however, many others who are true stewards of The Roeper School. These members of the Roeper Community may not even realize how important their daily actions are in guiding the future of the School. When a family participates in the Roeper Parent Community or the Roeper Booster Club, or when they attend a Roeper Athletic event, or they watch a Fine Arts or Forensics performance, cheer at a Robotics competition or Chess tournament, contribute to the Annual Fund, or engage in any other way with The Roeper School, they become its stewards.

The stewardship responsibility of The Roeper School is great and complex, and it takes everyone doing his or her part to ensure that The Roeper School continues to maintain its high standards of education and responsibility for generations to come. With the careful and responsible actions and management of all our stewards, I am confident that The Roeper School will continue its success for the next 75 years. f

THE MARIANN HOAG SCHOLARSHIP DINNER We are so grateful for the generous and enthusiastic response to the first-ever presentation of the Mariann Hoag Scholarship Dinner.

The event exceeded our expectations. Most especially, we were able to create an event that fittingly honored Mariann, while contributing to a fundamental mission of The Roeper School.

The Mariann Hoag Scholarship Dinner raised more than $89,000 and included record-breaking “Raise Your Paddle” donations (doubling the contributions from previous auctions) of $42,000. The remarkable and one-of-a-kind Silent Auction Class Projects raised more than $12,000; our Corporate Sponsorships yielded $23,000; and we received an additional $7,000 in cash donations; Cash Raffle proceeds were nearly $5,000 in additional income.

As well, the Prelude Party was a huge success with more than 250 in attendance as Roeper alumni Qiana Lillard ’94 and Will McDowell ’07 presented inspired and moving testimonials on the enduring and profound value of financial aid and scholarship.

We extend a heartfelt thanks to our dozens of regional Dinner Party hosts and those across the country and “over the pond”! By all accounts, each and every gathering was distinct — and enormous fun — and the success of this event is directly tied to their incredible generosity and support!

Thanks again to our many wonderful volunteers … the Upper School Jazz Band … the Class of 2016 … and to our phenomenal students, faculty and staff for their thoughtful contributions.
