Hey Menzies! Myself and the cultural committee have been busy planning events for you all to enjoy. Our annual truth and justice dinner will be a great opportunity to appreciate our history, whilst enjoying great company - date to be confirmed!
We are also hosting the LGBTea during Love Week (2nd of September)! If you’d like to be part of the panel, contact Leila Noja.
We’d also like to thank everyone who participated in our International cooking thread during lockdown! It was awesome to try so many recipes from around the world.
Despite the restrictions, sport hasn’t gone away at RMC! Get excited! I have lots of events planned for this coming semester, with more on the way.
The pool comp is drawing to a close as the finals quickly approach. There have already been plenty of awesome matches, so make sure you come down to the common room to try and catch a game. If you are enrolled to play in the tournament, and haven’t already looked at the draw - please take a quick peek, and message your opponent to set up a time to play.
Later this semester, if everything goes to plan, we will also be playing some futsal, with ping pong, and pool doubles tournaments also making a return. Later this semester I will also be running a handball competition, so keep your eyes out for more information!

A Block Fire Pit night

Pakistan has a rich heritage, immense culture, and a cuisine which is AMAAAZING! So it is fitting that their snacks should be special too.
Let’s see how a country with all that culture, flavour, and musical legacy condenses it all together into compact bite sized items. Who wants to take a snack trip to Pakistan?

These crunchy, flavourful taste sensations are like taking everything great from a “chaat masala”, and somehow having it layered onto thinly sliced slivers of potatoes. Chillz, which are made by Snackcity in Pakistan, have three flavours - one of the other flavours, which isn’t pictured, is my favourtie, especially when it comes to the level of spice. But this one, Chatpata, is special. The spice level is more tolerable for most people, but the flavours take you for a unique ride, unlike any other savoury potato snack I have tried.
One of the most famous street foods of Pakistan is the Shami Anda Burger, or famously known as the Anday Wala Burger. There are many cafes and food kiosks where you can get this burger all across Pakistan. This is one of the most popular ‘desi’ fast foods among Pakistanis. This burger has many varieties, and comes with and without egg. And depending on the place, you can add cheese to it too. However, you can prepare it at home as well, and in many Paki households it is used as a snack for rumbling tummies. My mum makes the best!

My hometown Multan, apart from being famous for its history, is also well known for the mouth watering mangoes it produces. Out of the large variety available, I will have to say that undoubtedly the ‘Anwar ratools’ are my favourite. In my eyes this is the perfect snack! The immense sweetness of these fruits is bound to give you the sugar hit you need to get through the hot summer days. On top of that, this kind of mango has less fibers than most, resulting in an awesome texture! Owing to the high domestic demand, and low exports, ‘Anwar Ratools’ are not easily available outside Pakistan, and that’s the main reason I am sharing them with youbecause I miss them so badly!
Sohan halwa is a traditional dessert in South Asia which is a variety of dense, sweet confection or halwa. Making sohan halwa is a skill that has been passed down through the generations. Some of the most famous sohan halwa shops in Multan have been in place for more than a century.

Formula 1, the fastest sport on earth: a form of open wheel motorsport in which 20 drivers, and 10 teams, compete over a series of races to win both the drivers, and constructors championship. It is a high octane, dangerous sport, in which anything can happen. Formula 1 cars can go at over 300 km/h, tackling turn after turn with unrivaled precision. These cars are so extreme, that drivers often experience more G-force around a corner then a shuttle launch - and it is said that the aerodynamic downforce produced by these cars is enough to allow them to drive upside down.
Since 2014, a period in Formula 1 commonly referred to as the turbo-hybrid era has been dominated by Mercedes-AMG Petronas, with driver Lewis Hamilton taking home 5 of the last 6 drivers championships. However, even with a dominant car, Mercedes are in for some trouble in the late-starting 2020 season as the young flying dutchman Max Verstappen has already put up a fierce performance in his horned Red Bull Racing machine.

If this interests you in the slightest, please feel free to come down to the movie room over the following nights to watch this exhilarating sport with a few RMC enthusiasts.

Tenet, directed by Christopher Nolan
While I don’t think I’m surprising anyone by recommending this film, especially since every Christopher Nolan film in the last few years has been a major event, I always consider the hype warranted. Nolan’s uncanny ability to balance mainstream accessibility, and much more ambitious concepts, more reminiscent of arthouse films, seems to have been refined down to a science. Seeming to be a spy thriller film mixed with an interesting concept surrounding the reversal of the flow of time, it also features the talents of John David Washington, and recent indie star Robert Pattinson, among many others. Since it was just recently released in theatres, it’s the perfect time to go and see it.
Dune, directed by Denis Villeneuve
Due to the (quite regrettable) commercial failure of director Denis Villenueve’s previous film, 2017’s Blade Runner 2049, I am inclined to promote his work whenever an opportunity presents itself to me, and I especially wanted to promote this project. This being the latest adaptation of the Frank Herbert classic novel, it features the cinematography of Greg Fraser, whose previous work included the excellent 2014 film Foxcatcher. A star-studded cast including Oscar Isaac, Timothy Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, Javier Bardem, amongst countless other actors of similar caliber are bound to make this an amazing film. While previous adaptations of Dune have been historically hit-or-miss, Denis Villenueve’s directorial resume (which includes Sicario, Arrival, Enemy, and the aforementioned Blade Runner 2049) has kept me undeniably jubilant for its release in December, and I hope i’ve convinced you to see it in theatres as well!

I’m thinking of ending things, directed by Charlie Kaufman
This Netflix film, in my opinion, is probably the most inaccessible one that I’m recommending among the three. Written and directed by Charlie Kaufman, this film follows a woman who has reservations concerning her relationship as she agrees to meet her boyfriend Jake’s family. Her perceptions of her identity, relationship, and world start to become less defined than she initially thought. Based on a novel by Ian Reid, my description can seem mostly straightforward on the surface, but that is not likely to be the case. Films directed and/or written by Charlie Kaufman often have motifs that tackle themes of identity and existentialism, often through surrealistic aesthetics, and frameworks that question a character’s reality. There is currently a trailer out, which gratefully does not spoil any plot details, but establishes the metaphysical ambience that runs through this film. The film is being released on Netflix on the 4th of September, and if you have a taste for more challenging cinema, with an abundance of profound ideas, you will have to give this movie a chance!
Honourable mentions:
The Devil All the Time, directed by Antonio Campos
The French Dispatch, directed by Wes Anderson
Wonder Woman 1984, directed by Patty Jenkins
Soul, directed by Pete Docter
