Welcome to this year ' s RMC yearbook! As we look back, we remember a year filled with excitement, friendships, and unforgettable moments From the energy of Welcome Week's Sugar Rush to the bittersweet farewells, we ' ve shared - these will be experiences that will stay with us long after we ' ve left
This yearbook highlights the key moments that shaped our time here You'll find staff reports, club updates, whether you debated in the Socratic Club or joined Crossroads for Bible study, and recaps of events like Ziggy's birthday and the formal dinners
These moments remind us of the connections we ' ve built and the community we ' ve grown We also interviewed some of our departing residents, their reflections capture the heart of what it means to be a Menzies Their stories, like all of ours, speak to the friendships, lessons, and sense of belonging we ' ve found here
We hope this yearbook brings back fond memories and shows just how sweet this year has been
As we draw to the close of another year, I want to take a moment to reflect on what has been an extraordinary and fulfilling time for our community at Robert Menzies College
After the challenges posed by COVID-19 in recent years, this year has been particularly significant, as we returned to full capacity for the first time since the pandemic A full college meant a return to the vibrant energy and sense of community that defines RMC, and it enabled us to initiate exciting projects around the College that will continue to enrich the experience of all who live and work here
We were also delighted to part of our partnership wi our First Nations residents impact, especially in foster belonging for all students
One of the key highlights has been the revamp of the college entrance, which now provides a more welcoming and aesthetically pleasing gateway to our home This year also saw the establishment of a Postgraduate Study Room, providing our postgraduate residents with a quiet and focused space to pursue their research and studies Another wonderful addition this year has been the establishment of the Creative Space, where residents have come together to explore their talents in art and other creative activities These spaces have sparked incredible collaboration and creativity, and I look forward to seeing even more unfold Additionally, students have been working on the design and construction of a new deck, which is nearing completion This will serve as a fantastic communal space, encouraging connection and relaxation for residents, particularly as we enter the summer months
Our community continues to grow in more ways than one We have seen an increasing number of young children Their presence reminds us of the fullness of life here at RMC, where people of all stages of life share space, experiences, and support
In addition to these new arrivals, our Socratic Club has been a forum for robust discussion critical topics This year, the club addressed a range of important issues, including Free Speech, the Israel-Hamas conflict, artificial intelligence, gender differences and the profou question of what it means to be human in today's world These discussions, shaped by our students' perspectives and insights, have deepened our collective understanding and challen us to think more critically
A special mention must also be made of Vera Cogitate: A Publication of Ideas from Robert Menzies College, which was relaunched this year after a few years ' hiatus With articles written by our own residents, Vera Cogitate provides a platform for thoughtful and meaningful discourse This publication is a testament to the intellectual curiosity and creativity of our students and we are excited to see it continue to flourish

We are proud to have students from 38 different countries represented in our college, bringing with them a rich diversity of cultures, perspectives, and experiences This international mix is one of our greatest strengths, and it creates a dynamic environment where we can all learn from one another
I want to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our students, who have excelled in their studies this year despite the challenges that come with a busy and active college life. Your achievements are a testament to your resilience and determination
I would also like to extend a special word of thanks to our staff, whose tireless efforts behind the scenes ensure that the college runs smoothly From administration to housekeeping, maintenance, and kitchen staff, your contributions make RMC not just a place to live, but a home for all of us Your commitment to excellence and care for our residents has been invaluable.
Lastly, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our Residential Advisors and the Student Executive Your leadership and commitment to the wellbeing of our community have been exceptional, and we could not have navigated this year so successfully without you
To those residents who will be leaving us at the end of this year, whether to return home or to embark on new careers, we wish you all the best for the future You will always be part of the RMC family, and we look forward to seeing where your journeys take you
During the February Fresher Orientation this year, I found an excuse to play an episode of Bluey, an award-winning Australian Children's Television show to our first batch of incoming residents. It captures one of the threads of thought I have been mulling over this year, which is the power of stories Facts exist and events happen, but it's the stories we tell about them that give meaning, create purpose and build connection
At the individual level in pastoral conversations, I have noticed that we can weave stories where mistakes made become lessons learnt, past slights are seen as misunderstandings and an opportunity to deepen relationships, and the pains of assessments are part of a greater journey towards making a positive contribution in this world
Stories are important at the community level as well Every year there is change and turnover in student leaders, RMC staffing changes from year-to-year and of course there are the many residents that become alumni and make their way into the world, making room of a new batch of Freshers I can then introduce to Bluey But whilst the people of RMC constantly change, there is an RMC culture, and an RMC identity that binds us all together as a unique family that only those who have been part of RMC can really grasp A legacy of care and inclusiveness, of love and acceptance, of rich diversity in very close quarters, and of building the type of place where having a jumping castle for a dog's birthday party completely makes sense However, there are always challenges to living in community: conflict, miscommunication and disappointment Stories about ourselves, others and the world around us can also be powerful enough to trap us in indecision, discouragement, disillusionment and disengagement and it is always important to examine how stories are operating in our lives, and whether they are actually true
As a Christian in a Christian College (that welcomes all regardless of faith and background), my story fits within the greater and wonderful story of the God who made me, loved me
and sacrificially redeemed me through the cross of Jesus Christ, with the promise of being a part of His eternal Kingdom in the age to come Jesus said that "the truth will set you free" (John 8:31) and it is my hope that as a community we can echo God's love and acceptance to each other My encouragement for all is that you find your story within God's story because it is true and more wonderful than you can grasp, and that you make the best of the many opportunities to learn about Christ at RMC (don't forget to take your gift Bible with you!) The story of my year at RMC this year has been a delight in sharing the joys and fun of College, as well as being there in challenges and the lows that come from sharing in life together My hope and prayer is that your stories are ones of friendship, growth, perseverance and delight I have loved doing 2024 with you all and look forward to writing a new story in 2025
Much much love,
Becky

Dreams and hopes are bound to our human existence, we are shaped, frustrated, elated, disappointed by our desires for the future. These desires are equally formed by the paths of our past and the experience of the present In my second year at RMC, it's been a delight to walk alongside you and watch you grow as you faced the challenges of University life and community living I've treasured the moments where I see the spark of passion and enthusiasm in our conversations, and it reminds me of the reasons I first became a school teacher
A huge thank you to the reliable and supportive Academic RA team: Jack, Grace, Vidyani, and Luke - you ' ve contributed to the growth of the college From going to see Ramses II and our trip to NSW Art Gallery, to study lounges and general academic support, you ' ve paved the way for continued academic and leadership formation at RMC in 2024
Graduate Coordinators
Stefan and Monaal With your help we ' ve been able to launch the Post Grad room and update the Clinical Room for our community We've had postgraduate suppers and also two Vera Cogitate Research Symposiums which have been turned into our restarted publication of Vera Cogitate; the winter edition focused on Beauty and the upcoming summer edition will explore self and other Thanks so much for all our residents who contributed!
Whatever lies ahead Menzies, hold fast to your dreams!

g p g g y believe about the world, about yourself, and about what the purpose of life is
Everyone needs a purpose; an understanding of wha is true; and way to live that out It's both importan and fascinating to think through your worldview or faith as an adult – independent of your family, school, and upbringing
To start working out your worldview, you might like to think about these questions ~
• Why is there something rather than nothing?
• What is wrong with the world?
• How can we fix what is wrong with the world?
• Is there is a God and what is God like?
• What happens when you die?
I didn't grow up with a Christian family, but I still remember investigating different faiths as a teenager and being struck by the person of Jesus.
It's been amazing to have people from all beliefs join us at Crossroads, especially for our Prayer & Praise Night, when our one and only Maintenance Manager, Matt West, shared his story of faith in Jesus. But God doesn't just meet us in the highs – he is also there in the lows The reality of leaving school, studying at Uni, and going out into the world can be difficult sometimes But even through hard stuff, God offers us his love and goodness I have found that faith in Jesus is: • Satisfying – it meets my deepest needs and longings for meaning, purpose, love, and joy • It is credible – there is good evidence for Jesus' life, death, and resurrection. • It is liveable – it works day to day Jesus meets me in my joys and my suffering, and delivers the comfort, the hope, and the truth that I need So, what do you think? Why not take the opportunity to explore your worldview whilst you ' re at College? There's no better time and place to do it

As we wrap up this academic year, I want to take a moment to reflect on the journey we ' ve shared as a community Serving as your president has been an incredibly rewarding experience, and I'm proud to say it has been a successful year for all of us at RMC
This year was marked by a renewed sense of energy and enthusiasm We witnessed an impressive turnout at events, showcasing the vibrant spirit of our community It was heartwarming to see both new and returning students come together, forging friendships and creating lasting memories The diversity of our residents enriched our events and discussions, making RMC a truly dynamic place to live and learn.
As an international student myself, I found this year particularly meaningful. I had the opportunity to connect with individuals from various backgrounds and cultures, which not only broadened my perspective but also deepened my appreciation for our global community Each conversation and shared experience reminded me of the importance of inclusivity and understanding in our college environment
Throughout the y collaboration, and staff, and residen

Youssef Sarkis
RMCSA Student President 2024
Over the past year, my role has never wanted for excitement Many of you may have thought you saw me running around, papers flying in a chaotic mess Many of you would be right It's about the time of year when us Executive look back at our roles, so that future candidates who fill our shoes can strive to become greater, further pushing the lim what's possible to accomplish
At the start of the year, we celebrated Welcome Week and intr residents to the college. Fresh faces that now feel so familiar still grace the college with their presence today Today, I can still remember the Day Scav hunt, the moment when me and Youssef found out that the boat used last year was absent, sprinted to the nearest Kmart and a 30-minute breathing exercise trying to inflate it as fast as possible And of course, our legendary victory against DLC with the greatest dance number created yet (in my perfectly biased opinion) While 2.O-Week could not have been as spectacular as our first, I am glad to see so many people, including myself, still took home many fond memories (and some, a special award)
Block Wars has of course been something occupying my grey matter, trying to innovate new and exciting challenges for out lovely residents to compete in healthy competition As of writing this, the ultimate winner has not yet been determined, however I would like to duly thank everyone who showed up and supported the events They could not run without the good will and spirit of the teams, and I am eternally thankful that each block was willing to step up to the plate I would like to encourage that the innovation of events continues I would love to see where the next Vice-President takes the role
And last, but never the least, my wonderful Food Committee To Anna, Aaron, Shree, Joe and of course Jin, while meeting times have never been particularly easy for us, I could not be more proud of what we have managed to accomplish We have seen great strides in the development of the salad bar, implementation of effective signage, included chopsticks with meals, and a stronger, healthier menu for our residents I would like to make a special thank you, for all of your efforts and contributions to this role
My role has never been easy There are many more things in which I could speak: merch, various meetings, the Constitution, and of course Adrian our wonderful Red Bull Guy But at the end of the day, this is the role I chose to make my own I only hope that in the future, the Vice-President will continue the same Though I may leave this role, expect to see me around in the future and never be afraid to say hi!
Thank you to all, and to all I wish the best,
Being the treasurer of the RMCSA exec has been a wild experience When joining the team this year, being in charge of the resident's budget seemed like an insurmountable task, and in ways it was, but we got it done Even though we haven't finalised everything just yet, we are on our way to a zero surplus, which means our team has effectively used the funds given to us by you, to deliver back to the community
In simple terms, my role in the executive was to ensure that every initiative this year was allocated enough funds to run smoothly, all while keeping our expenditure equal to our income This was able to happen partially because of an unexpected influx of new students in semester two, and partially because of the incredible participation of the RMCSA, which meant we were able to run more events for the community
Throughout the year, the exec did an amazing job of working with the budget, meaning the ever-increasing cost of events could be managed, and that we are on track to set up 2025's exec with sufficient revenue to start the year, a fund for the creative room and a fund for the postgraduate initiative While we have been able to support the incoming exec in getting started and are moving to stop some unexpected expenses, with the way things are going, it will be a learning experience for whoever takes the treasury position but I don't doubt they will have fun in the role
Finally, I want to say thank you to the exec and RAs who gave so much of their time and energy to our initiatives this year, it really wouldn't have happened without them It has been an amazing experience that I won't soon forget and I look forward to seeing next year ' s exec have just as much fun
See you all at ball, Reyna.
Here's a recap of D&E 2024
First let's thank some people that made this year possible
Sugar, spice and everything nice
These were the ingredients chosen to create the perfect committee
But Exec Tom accidentally added an extra ingredient to the concoction… Chemical D&E
Thus, The D&E Committee was born!
Hayley Rogers, Tyrone Vatubuli and David Mitchell The best committee I could have asked for to help me fight crime (run formal dinners) and the forces of evil (survive the D&E cupboa
My Fairy Godmother - Daniel Kemp
My tech whizzes - Joe Melville and David Elliot
Jin - My main menu man (please don't lose the table numbers I'll cry)
The 2024 exec team - I've loved laughing and crying with you all this year and wouldn't pick anyone else We are trauma bonded for life now!
This year ' s D&E formal dinners were:
- Commencement Dinner
- International Dinner
- Truth & Justice Dinner
- Welcome Back Dinner
- Valedictory Dinner
Just when I got the swing of things, the year is over These dinners are my babies, and just like real children they're a headache but I love them Goodbye to sewing flags by hand, tinsel and the D&E cupboard itches
Believe it or not I don't just host formal dinners. Other events this year include The Holi festival, Pride Month, the O-Week RMC Uni Tour and developing the new Creative Room with Bindiya & Meredith
For the first time in RMC history no one got in the pond on Holi, long live the fish! We dove into RMC's LGBTQIA+ past and present with Pride in the Courtyard and had a cozy movie night with Bend it Like Beckham Myself and Sam CCM also hosted Love Week's LGBTea
This year I started the RMC Uni Tour catered to regional and international students, showing residents valuable resources like Student Wellbeing, the MQU Hospital, MQU Gym and more
(and
- The aim is to make dinners not painful
- Remember to drink, eat, sit and breathe (during dinners and in general)
- Seating by degree? Complaints. Seating by own choice? Complaints. There winning
- Everyone wants to eat what the dietary requirements get, no one wants they're served
- If you get complimented on a menu item, someone will complain about that menu item
- You speaking is not in the runsheet… you will have the mic the most
- Whenever you get the chance to reorganise the D&E cupboard take it, and watch out for how itchy it makes you
- There is never enough chalk
- For everyone who signs up to carry a flag, another two people will rock up
- Format your runsheets in advance
- Have fun and enjoy it
RMC 2024, I couldn't have asked for a better year. It was exciting, stressful and non-stop and I loved every second of it
This disabled, pansexual, Jewish girl is proud of herself and everyone involved
To next year ' s D&E and International Rep, I know you'll smash it
Good morning, and in case I don't see ya, good afternoon, good evening and good night!
<3 Tom
This year started with a bang in February as we welcomed a new wave of freshers during O-Week! To kick off an unforgettable year of social events, we took a lively trip into the city for our famous pub crawl—setting the tone for what's been one of our most exciting years yet
Our annual Karaoke Night didn't disappoint, co-hosted by our freshly elected Social Committee members The event drew in a crowd ready to sing their hearts out, entertain, and cheer on their friends—a true RMC tradition
Harbour Cruise was another standout, with the theme "Something with the same first letter as your name " Dressed in creative costumes, we wandered through Darling Harbour to King Street Wharf during the Vivid Festival, enjoying drinks, music, and great vibes The night's playlist had us all tearing up the dancefloor with the classic fresher tunes you can see captured in the photos
In 2 0 Week, we gave another warm welcome to new freshers with a local pub crawl. As always, we made sure to hit up our beloved Ranch—the go-to spot for Wednesday night hangouts and memories
One of the highlights this year was a chill Friday afternoon BBQ, organized by the Social Committee With a delicious sausage sizzle and sunny weather, the good vibes were undeniable
And of course, the crown jewel of our social calendar: The College Ball Hosted at the stunning Curzon Hall, we gathered in a venue straight out of a fairy tale, with chandeliers and elegant decor After a three-course meal, we laughed through the Exec Awards and then danced the night away, making memories that will last long after the year ends
This year has been a huge success for the social team We planned events that were not only fun but also safe, helping residents break out of their comfort zones and experience some of Sydney's finest venues
A massive shoutout to my incredible Social Committee—Aoife Barrett-Lennard, Blesson Stephen, and Murray Fivaz—for their endless ideas, energy, and dedication You made this year ' s events an absolute hit
And finally, thank you to all the residents who joined in on the fun! Wishing you the best of luck in your future years at RMC Cheers to many more unforgettable moments!
This year, the college was buzzing with sports activities, offering students a great way to stay active and foster community spirit
Inter-accommodation competitions added further excitement, including touch football, netball, futsal, and volleyball RMC had great college spirit and worked together to come to the top These events encouraged friendly rivalries between accommodations, with each team striving for the top spot (which was evidently ours!)
Beyond these physical sports, students also enjoyed indoor competitions like pool and table tennis and line and partner dancing, which offered a fun, social way to engage with others
A massive thank you to everyone who participated in the sporting events and to all that came to cheer along their fellow collegians We would not have been able to make sports as enjoyable without all your support!
Wow, what a year 2024 has been for SVF I feel incredibly privileged that I was able to be on the executive this year and continue the amazing work that has been done in previous years to contribute to both RMC and the wider community Though this year has been a massive learning curve with event management plans and risk assessments, it has been so much fun and incredibly enjoyable, from Welcome week to Welcome 2 0 week to all the events run by not just myself but other executives it has been a blast The best part of all is getting to work with an extraordinary executive team who all put their heart and soul into everything they do But, let's quickly rewind and take a look at everything that SVF has achieved this year
Earth Hour which aims to be a global movement uniting people to take action on environmental issues and protect the planet. At college we had everyone turn the main lights off for an hour, put a fire on, had hot chocolates, music blasting and chatting. Our Annual World's Greatest Shave We had people cut, dye and of course shave their hair The event was incredibly successful raising a whopping $600 for the Leukaemia Foundation RMC participated in another Blood drive heading to Chatswood to donate We had 7 residents in total donate, which we found out from the centre was both the biggest and youngest group of people to donate
After collecting lots of bottles and cans from RMC formal dinners we were able to donate them for 10c recycling allowing us to create an emergency period basket in the female bathroom Hopefully this will be able to continue with next year ' s SVF representative
Finally, we will be continuing White Ribbon from last year continuing to raise awareness about domestic violence and have open conversation between one another
This year wouldn't have been made possible without the support from my Committee even if it was a bit smaller than others years Abby Martin and Bec Howes have been amazing in helping make SVF what it was this year I don't think I can say enough just how grateful I am for the opportunity to have been the SVF executive this year Thank you to the executive, staff and my friends who all believed in me and have made this year unforgettable I can't wait to see what our 2025 SVF executive has in store for next year! But for now, enjoy college and uni and get ready for holidays then the next season of RMC 2025!
S e s s i o n 1
Every beginning of the session, RMC holds a week full of special events to get into the college community spirit!
The first session ' s block supper went swimmingly, and the food was as good as always :)
The bus reeked of teenagers
We had been rocked and rattled and rotated for the last fifty minutes, through the heat of Kuwait City and into the sweat of Hawally
Derek (not his real name, but not far off) sat next to the driver but angled himself so that he could still see the rest of the bus. As the oldest student present, he had been assigned the ultimate badge of honor: bus captain, a role he did not take lightly– as he would remind us approximately every 3 to 4 minutes.
‘You can’t eat on the bus!’ he would bark ‘It’s just water,’ the kids would yell. ‘I don’t care!’
And the children would swear. And Derek would flip his ash-blond hair, and the bus ride stretched on and on.
I could feel the chicken nuggets from recess swirl around in the pool of orange juice in my gut. I closed my eyes and tried to lean against the window, keep it down My skull vibrated loudly against the glass in an undignified manner. I straightened up quickly, but Derek was already laughing
The bus came to a stop, and its big doors slowly opened. Derek swung his bag over his shoulder and looked in my direction ‘Hurry up, Carol ’
I weeded through the backpack straps, hanging limbs and likely other small students on my way out, not taking my eyes off the gates of my apartment building.
It was around 3:20pm. That gave me just enough time to get home, get changed and turn the TV on before SpongeBob came on at 3:30pm I had it all planned out
I stepped into the elevator behind Derek ‘Did you have a good day?’ I didn’t respond.
He pretended to skip to the next song though we both knew full well he didn’t have any music on there. It was a little grey Nokia phone… the one with the little buttons you had to press thrice to text a different letter.
He raised his finger to push the elevator buttons but hesitated. He pressed 10 for me, then turned and said,
‘You don’t mind if I head home today, right? You’ll make it on your own okay?’ The metal doors shut.
‘Of course?’ I narrowed my eyes. ‘It’s not my first time using an elevator, Derek. ’
‘I know, I know–’ And he hit number 9 with his knuckle
‘I just didn’t want your mom on my case, that’s all.’
Level 1 Level 2 Level 3
‘Derek, I’m literally 9 years old I can get off when the little screen says 10 It’s not that hard ’ Level 4…
He shrugged. I don’t know why he always does this; it’s like he’s looking for opportunities to make me feel small Level 5… Level 6…
‘I’m just tryna be nice, Carol.’
Level 7
‘Relax ’ Level 8…
I rolled my eyes. Level 9
The metal doors heaved themselves open
‘I’ll see you tomorrow…’
And with a half-hearted salute, he stepped out of my line of vision Ugh
Level 10. That’s me!
I looked at the doors expectantly, smiling. Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? Nothing happened
I look around… waiting some more. Maybe the elevator needs time. Maybe it had a long day. I breathe in. ‘Hello?’
My voice sounded oddly loud in the little metal box.
Is this thing about to fall? Is this the end?
I collect myself No, no Don’t be ridiculous It’s just buffering I press 10 again, firmly and confidently, and feel the braille dots dig into my index finger.
I blink… nothing happens.
Right
Maybe it didn’t hear me. I try again, one long press, and I see it light up in blue… and turn back to grey I look down at the little grooves the Braille 10 has left on my finger
I try evaluating my options I seem to have two One is to utterly embarrass myself and scream for help and the other is to sit here and wait for death to swallow me in the form of an elevator accident or a bad man who cancels his plans after finding the little girl in the lift
I give it a few minutes. The elevator lights switch off. Surely not.
I picture myself lying on the elevator floor, limbs sprawled and broken into a million pieces, bones jutting out through my skin, a pool of blood on the floor, thoroughly soaking my school uniform I’d die with Barbie watching me from my backpack, unflinching, unbothered, unzipped–Arabic notebook flung out of there from the impact, pages covering the elevator, matted with blood. The elevator mirror would shatter, sending shards every which way, cutting my face this way and that– blood would splash out onto the shoes of whoever was unlucky enough to call the lift, their feet forever stained with the memories of the dead girl in the elevator.
The thought of the fall terrified me. I really didn’t want this to be it. Would that be better than being found alive though?
I pictured him, a tall man in a hoodie, covering his face, arms extended, ready to snatch me away from everything I’ve ever known. I didn’t quite know what he wanted from me or why he would hate me enough to want me dead, but I knew how my mother warned me about him. Don’t let go of my hand in crowded places or the bad man will take you away. Don’t go crossing the street alone for the shops or the bad man will take you away. Don’t go lingering in the
parking lot after school with your friends or the bad man will take you away.
been waiting for this moment. He can smell me now, he’s coming closer.
‘Mamaaaaaaaaaa!!’ I yell, shouting as loud as I can. ‘Ya Mamaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!’
I breathe awkwardly when I’m done I’ve never had my voice fill up a room like that
‘God, I’m sorry. Look, I’m sorry. I’m sorry I was mean to Stephanie yesterday, and I’m sorry I make fun of how my dad pronounces some words, and I’m sorry for how much I hate Derek I know we’re not supposed to hate people, I’m sorry. Please get me out of here, please. I’m sorry.’
I gave it a couple minutes, really looking at the line between the two doors. Aaany minute now…
Tears collect in my eyes. I put my backpack on the floor, preparing for the drop.
That wasn’t enough I literally don’t know what else to do Do I need to pray harder? How does one pray harder? Do I need to bow down or something– do I kneel?
I swallow, getting on the floor to pray and/ or meet my Maker. I put my hands together and shut my eyes as tight as I can, but shout two or three more times just for good measure.
I pray out loud until I tire, until my voice becomes nothing but a murmur.
The doors swept open and let out two bloodcurdling screams. There was light again, and I realised one of the screams was my own.
There stood Haytham’s mother, our next-door neighbour, face creased from sleep, hijab loosely wrapped around her head, arms in the air in self-defence, utterly dishevelled.
She looks down at the child with the red face curled up into a ball in the middle of the elevator.
“Habibti,” she says, and she points at the ‘open’ button under all the numbers. ‘Look.’
This is a story I don’t tell very often, mainly because I feel ridiculous for not discovering the open button on elevators sooner But the more I think about it, the more I realise I sometimes do the same thing today.
I want consistent HD’s but leave things last minute. I yearn for deeper relationships with the people in my life but don’t respond to texts I ask God to speak to me but watch my Bible collect dust.
No amount of crying and yelling and foaming at the mouth will give me any of these things, simply because the solution to all these problems is right under my nose.
In Matthew 7:7, Jesus says, “Ask and it will be given to you.” But He doesn’t leave it there. He goes on to say, “Seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”
It makes me think of the song lyric, “Oh, what peace we often forfeit. Oh, what needless pains we bear, all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer ”
With that in mind, I’d like to extend the invitation I received to everyone here tonight ‘Habibti, Habibi, look’.

RMC has block supper every session! This session 2 we had campfires and lots of desserts. It was documented under The Voice issue 08/2024 under: The Lord of the Refreshments.
This year Ziggy turned 5! Such an important birthday deserved an epic celebration, so we did just that.
On a sunny afternoon in September, we brought in a massive Jungle Jumping Castle, packed party bags, and food that would be perfect for a kid's 5th birthday party – fairy bread, cupcakes, cookies, and more It really is one of the highlight events of the year, with over 100 residents coming to party up a storm
Happy birthday Ziggy!
cious food and live will be directed to scholarships for future RMC residents.
On these Wellbeing Event nights, students have enjoyed a yummy supper from Jin's kitchen (think churros, muffins, hot chocolates), heard a short practical talk from Meredith on a mental health/ wellbeing topic of interest (for example, mindfulness, stress management, time management) and then enjoyed a creative activity They have been good opportunities to make friends, belong to a growing community and to learn something new
So far we have had a night learning how to Paint by Numbers with Sam, and two nights learning to crotchet with our very own Maz Flood who gave access to online resources as well as one to one individual instruction. These evenings manage to meet these wellbeing objectives- maybe we will get really good at crocheting and make blankets for others in need! If you have any ideas for events next year please drop Meredith, Maz or Sam a note!
A pre-Christmas card making night using watercolours and other media is planned for 13 November so mark your dairies As always, all are welcome and no prior knowledge is required Materials will be supplied.
There are many o Australian BlackD engaged life wher of time and effort (flow) Next, having healthy relationships with others that provide support, meaning and purpose in life enhances wellbeing Also, cultivating positive emotions like happiness and gratitude are important So too is developing a sense of accomplishment and self-esteem by pursuing achievement and mastery of things Finally, being part of and working towards something that's larger than yourself helps give meaningto life and supports our wellbeing
Our Wellbeing Events are supportive of these approaches and have been popular with both our young women and men Snacks and fun activities are always winners with students so it has been no surprise that these events have been successful
Formal Dinners:
Our kitchen successfully catered a variety of special events and formal dinners this year, including: Truth and Justice Dinner: We crafted a thoughtful menu combining pub-style meals with Indigenous ingredients such as wattle seed, bush tomato, lemon myrtle, and pepper berries International Night: In celebration of the diverse RMC community, we featured dishes from eleven different countries Highlights included Kunafeh, Goat Curry, Mango Lassi, and Bubble Tea Alumni Fundraising Dinner: This event brought together past and present members of RMC Canapes like vegetarian spring rolls and mushroom arancini were well received Personally, this set menu was my favourite to create and enjoy
We love receiving feedback, and this year we received many positive comments, such as:
" …best meal I've had at RMC so far! Huge compliments to the kitchen staff, and I'd love for this dish to become a regular "
"I especially love that people from different cultures and with different preferences can enjoy a taste of home as well as something new Meals are balanced with lots of options "
We also appreciate the constructive criticism and look forward to implementing changes to improve the dining experience even further
Sustainability:
RMC remains committed to sustainability by reducing waste and minimizing environmental impacts One of our popular initiatives has been repurposing leftover bread into croutons for Caesar salads or turning burger buns into garlic bread, ensuring no food goes to waste We also source our vegetables and produce locally, supporting Australian farmers and reducing our carbon footprint Some of our produce even comes from the community garden
Conclusion:
In 2024, our efforts went beyond providing meals—we built community, embraced sustainability, and celebrated the rich diversity of our college through food Whether at formal dinners or everyday meals, our focus has been on inclusivity, enjoyment, and environmental mindfulness We are proud of this year ' s successes and look forward to continuing to serve our residents with creativity, care, and commitment A special thank you goes to our casual staff, residents, and the food committee for their support and feedback, which have been vital to our progress Together, we look forward to another year of delicious, sustainable dining
The year has been good if not great Compared to the last couple years with covid, lockdowns and the need to constantly pivot this year has been easier to say the least The problems have been more straightforward and a lot more predictable which was helped by the efforts of the team To the veterans in the role thank you for being quick to show up and take charge, and to newer faces thank you for your enthusiasm and random questions. I wish you guys the best next year

This year the Socratic Club has handled some sensitive issues, with the required balance between respect and freeflowing discussion We had Dr Jonathan Cole, former security agent and expert in Islamic theology, outline 5 reasons why the conflict in Gaza (and now wider) is so difficult to resolve There were tense moments, which was inevitable given how contentious this tragedy has been But the Socratic club rose to the occasion
More recently, we discussed the claims and counter-claims of gender essentialism; that there are biologicallyinfluenced differences between men and women that go beyond child-bearing and body size This was held over two weeks, and in the second week a trans student (who couldn't attend) tabled their view, which added to the interesting discussion
As was the case last year, I have been really grateful for the open and curious conversation culture at RMC that allows us to discuss the unsayable I recognize the weight of these issues is unequally felt, so I especially want to thank those who have had the courage to open up in spite of the pain of misunderstanding or the risk of contrary views
Thank you, one and all!
We celebrated the launch of our new Creative Room in July As one of a number of strategies to support student mental health and wellbeing, and responding to student interest over the years for a dedicated place to enjoy quieter hobbies, this formerly underutilised study space has been beautifully renovated and is now a vibrant hub for creative pursuits and hobbies like painting, drawing, colouring in, knitting, crocheting, sewing, beading, and puzzles It is a great place to read or do a word search as well as being still available as a study room It has also been used for evening wellbeing events
Thanks to Student Exec members Tom and Bindi, the room has been fitted out with beautiful furniture, seating and decorations as well as some art materials for communal use And you will notice on the wall a stunning collection of colourful artworks full of story and meaning created by past Indigenous students at RMC
There is a concept that having three distinct " spaces " to work, rest and play is ideal for wellbeing The Creative Room is a "third space " for students to enjoy As a place that is not their room nor their study/work environment, it fosters social connectedness and belonging
Additionally, mindfulness is connected with many positive mental health and wellbeing outcomes Hobbies can enjoyed mindfully, as a counterpoint to the demands of study and work
In the Creative Room, perfectionism and stress can be left at the door Students are invited to explore activities they already like or are curious about Bring your own materials or share what is there Have fun experimenting!!!

Over these last two semesters I have reviewed all things musical here at RMC; including Karaoke Night, the Welcome Week Dance-Off, and personal picks you needed to hear! I have thoroughly enjoyed being able to get this project off the ground alongside the Voice team. My aim has always been to spark connections between residents over shared (and not shared) music tastes. I hope my chaotic compilations have been able to accomplish this and maybe even lead you to discover something new. Thank you all again for tuning in along the way!

In A Block this year we ' ve had some awesome moments and shared many memories and laughs with friends A blocks theme this year was Adventure Time, this theme gave us heaps of ideas to decorate the block by having each floor be a different area within the Adventure Time world, the bottom floor was Jake and Finn's Treehouse, Mid A was the Ice Kingdom and the Top floor was the Candy Kingdom all floors has a corresponding colour and pictures on the walls with streamers into each floor The A block Adventure Time people had heaps of fun at Welcome Week meeting and engaging in events and made lots of friends at the A block Supper held in the Lui Family Flat while learning about who had the same birthday month as you in Bingo A Block has been super chill and it's been great hanging out with everyone and seeing you in the halls going to and from classes and lectures and to and from ranch
There have been many great memories throughout this year that have been a highlight for me personally, I loved winning the 3rd Block Wars event where we had the best and longest wifi antenna for our imaginary RMC Block and I hope we win the 4th block wars too!
But this year has been amazing, I've learnt so many things being your RA this year and it has been so much fun working with A Block and we wish you all the very best in life at rmc and in the future !!
Lots of love and happiness
Alex and Dave
B Block Beach Block Best Block However you call it, B Block has undoubtedly been the best place to live at RMC! All bragging aside, being a Residential Advisor of B Block has given me great satisfaction. Throughout the year, I have had the chance to talk and befriend people worldwide It has been great to see all the boys live their best life at RMC and university, whether in a chill and humble fashion or a 'let's explore the entire city!' (literally every exchange student) way As always, there were some challenges throughout the year, however, these were quickly sorted out with the help of all the boys All the guys got along well, and everyone was kind and peaceful towards each other The floor was always well maintained, and I am mostly happy with everyone ' s hygiene standards Even if we didn't win block wars, or have the best turnout to events, I got a kick out of seeing everyone around college. If there is one, I've learnt this year, no matter if your residents aren't the way you expect, you can always find the positives in them I'm lucky that as my first (and last) time as an RA, I could be surrounded by a good group of residents who make the block feel homely. This year, I have thoroughly enjoyed working in the block with Lina and being the leader of the 'Gentlemen of B Block'
- Flynn
B Block is also known as the best block ever!!! This year I had the privilege to get to know B block residents and enjoy their company from witnessing the movie nights in the B block common room to the heated competition at block wars Everyone at B Block thrived this year by forming meaningful friendships that will hopefully last a lifetime. I enjoyed chats in the kitchen when my lovely residents made yummy food. We had a smooth year even though we can't deny that it got rough with exams sessions and assignments but the love and support from friends made it easier and it was all worth it in the end The college community and experience is one of the best experiences to live and I was privileged to be there and support B Block in any way possible We created great memories that we will treasure forever and that is what matters
- Lin
C Block!!! Charlie and the Jono factory had its most unproductive year Only Kit and Paddy were loyal to the bald cause Yet, this year has been a generous amount of chaos: from steeling capybaras, 44 homes in the courtyard, watching The Rookie and the Olympics, to constantly correcting our residents creative renaming of the block We want to thank everyone for making C block such lively homely and welcoming space, where there's always something going on, and always someone to talk to From your favourite RAs and factory managers,
Jono and Charlie
The D Block at RMC had an exciting and engaging year, centered around our Disney theme We decorated the common areas with Disney characters and quotes, fostering an environment that resonated with nostalgia and joy. This thematic approach not only made the block visually appealing but also sparked conversations and connections among residents, many of whom shared their favorite Disney movies. As residential advisors, we aimed to create a vibrant community atmosphere that encouraged participation, connection, and fun among our residents as well as block wars
Our efforts were met with enthusiasm and creativity, making this year truly memorable One of our highlights from the year was the Block Event Night, where we hoste a movie night featuring the beloved Pixar film, Ratatouille The movie night not only allowed us to unwind but also facilitated bonding among residents Throughout the year we learned the importance of adaptability and open communication in creating a supportive community.
We had some good turnouts for the block wars The first Olympic block wars had a strong attendance and we had a strong performance from Penny and Josiah to win capture the flag We also had a strong turn out in the block wars building challenge with strong performances from Tia, Nick, Hannah, Pierre, … and we memorably beat C block to come third overall.
We built some strong friendship groups in D block and were known as a very a quiet and respectful block which was good for the RAs Our strong community in particular was seen in the group movie nights in the common spaces.
A notable mention was Nick with the best attendance
We had the best time being your RAs this year, we want to thank all our residents for a fantastic and memorable year, we wish all you guys the best for your future endeavours at college and in life. Your D block RAs, Luke and Grace
This past year as the Residential Advisor for E Block has been a rewarding experience, even though I started during one of the most stressful periods of the semester, around semester one final exams. Despite the timing, I quickly introduced myself to all the residents, ensuring they knew I was available if they needed any help
E Block has had a great year, filled with memorable moments My favourite highlight was Block Wars, where E block secured first place in the first war and second place in the second war It was an achievement that brought a lot of excitement We also enjoyed smaller community-college activities, such as block supper, Fire Tea Talks (FTT), and events like U bar, the Ranch nights, distributing exam packs with encouraging messages, and a fantastic Christmas in July! HO HO HO!
E block has had an unforgettable year in the Enchanted Forest, full of community spirit and exciting memories We kicked things off with 'Garyoke' during block suppers which was a massive hit and brought everyone together with music, laughter and good food E block also showed incredible teamwork winning block wars in the first semester.
We had to say goodbye to Holly midway through first semester and welcomed Sohrab who has been an amazing addition to our team One of the biggest highlights was watching our residents become more social, hanging out in the common rooms, and building connections – a huge win for our E block community
In second semester, we welcomed lots of international students and exchange students from all over the world and it was a pleasure getting to know each and every one of them and learning about their unique cultures and experiences As the year comes to a close, we just want to say thank you for making E-block such a special place. Being part of this community has been a truly rewarding experience for us RAs, and we ' ve grown so much through the friendships we ' ve made and the moments we ' ve shared It has been a pleasure being your RAs and sharing this journey with you
Love, Vidyani, Jack, Gaspard, Sohrab
It was a surprise visit from Santa, dressed in his classic red suit, walking through the E-block corridors, which brought lots of joy to the college These were not just fun; they gave us all a chance to socialise, take a break from study pressures, and form deeper connections with each other
On a personal note, I made tea every evening and warmly invited any resident to join me, whether in my room or wherever they felt comfortable These times were filled with great conversations, testimonies, prayer, mutual encouragement and fun E Block truly embodied love—supporting one another through all challenges and sharing uplifting messages I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the residents of E Block for their kindness, respect, and encouragement I also extend my thanks to the dedicated RMC staff and the supportive chaplaincy team for their unwavering support I am also grateful to my fellow RAs in E block (Jack, Gaspard, and Vidyani) for their excellent teamwork and mutual support, which have contributed significantly to making E Block an Excellent block. E Block has been, and co t t be, an outstanding community!
Highlighter Assassin Arts Week was a week-long celebration of creativity, spanning everything from Shakespeare to chalk art, and from photography to memes Of course, Bob Ross Night continues to be the undisputed highlight of Arts Week
Then there was Highlighter Assassin, the event that has cemented its legendary status in the RMC social calendar Now in its fifth year, this chaotic yet beloved event once again filled the corridors of RMC with vibrant chaos and laughter It's the event where fresh fresher blood met the highlighters of colorful crimes—where community bonds grew tighter by keeping everyone apart That event where (author blinks randomly) … let's just say, it's unforgettable!
Beyond these, the Community RAs made sure to support various community sports events and cultural gatherings The courtyard BBQs became an essential feature of college life, even if the snags were anything but ordinary You couldn't miss the Comms team—they were everywhere, making their presence felt in ways both big and small
I'm confident you ' ve had your own memorable interaction with the RA team, whether it was at one of their events or through a simple, meaningful conversation
This year ' s RA team has been nothing short of phenomenal Creativity, commitment, and a contagious energy are the hallmarks of this Community Team Next year ' s RAs certainly have big shoes to fill—but if history is anything to go by, we can expect more greatness in 2024 Comms! Comms! Comms!
This year Crossroads has been a chance for anyone interested in faith and keen to explore the Bible to come together for fun, supper, prayer, and deep dives into Scripture Oh, and Ziggy pats It's always a vibe
On Thursday nights, we have thought about what it means to be a Christian at Uni, and listened to Jesus preach up a storm in his most famous Sermon on the Mount (Matthew chapters 5 to 7)
In second semester we have looked at the ancient book of Isaiah the prophet In 750BC, God spoke through Isaiah to Israel and surrounding nations in a time of political and religious turmoil (has anything changed?) It's been fascinating to read the prophecies and see how they are fulfilled in Jesus all those years later
The Bible claims that Jesus came to bring light, life, and peace in a dark and divided world –back then and now What do you think?
In Matthew 4, Jesus quotes Isaiah chapter 9 when he says, 14 to fulfil what was said through the prophet Isaiah: 15 "Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles— 16 the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned " 17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near "
As another year at RMC comes to an end, we say goodbye to many residents who have shaped and strengthened our community While several students prepare to move on to new adventures, Chirag Lamba, Kelly Ho, Antonio Sanchez, and Jack Burge kindly took the time to reflect on their experiences They share with us what they will miss, the friendships they built, and the moments that shaped them during their time here Their stories highlight the strong sense of community at RMC, filled with gratitude, memories, and excitement for the future
Chirag Lamba treasures RMC as a place of personal growth When he first arrived, he felt shy and unsure, but the warm, welcoming community helped him gain confidence "When I first came to college, I was very shy, and it was my first time being away from home However, over time, interacting with others made me more confident," Chirag says
Serving as both Resident Advisor (RA) and Duty Officer (DO) allowed Chirag to give back to the same community that helped him He remembers seeing new residents feeling the same nerves he once felt "I could see the new freshers were probably feeling the same as I was… but naturally, over time, thanks to the welcoming community at RMC, everyone finds their place "
As Chirag prepares to leave, he looks forward to finishing his studies and finding work in Sydney "I will miss the close-knit community of RMC… but I am sure I will pop by to meet up with my friends staying here next year, " he says, already planning his next visit
For Kelly, RMC became more than just a residence, it became a place to form lasting friendships and share in cultural celebrations "I will miss the people I've met and the wonderful memories at RMC," Kelly says Spending time in communal spaces like the dining hall, the common room, and the music room allowed her to connect deeply with others
One of her favorite memories involves celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival "It was a cozy evening filled with mooncakes, Chinese tea, lanterns, riddles, and live music in the courtyard " Events like this, along with celebrating Diwali, reflect the rich cultural diversity and the strong bonds formed through shared traditions
As Kelly moves forward, she carries the friendships and cultural experiences from RMC Her time here reflects the spirit of connection, inclusion, and warmth that defines the community at RMC
For Antonio, RMC provided a welcoming introduction to life in Sydney "I made some really good friends while living at RMC, and I'm going to miss seeing them almost every day," he says The friendships he formed and the small, comforting routines, like enjoying chicken and rice meals, made RMC feel like home
One of Antonio's fondest memories involves a spontaneous Friday night gaming session with friends, complete with pizza and plenty of laughter over rounds of Super Smash Bros Moments like these, filled with fun and friendship, defined his time here
As Antonio continues his PhD, he carries with him the lessons of community and support that RMC taught him "RMC was a very nice introduction to life in Sydney, and I recommend it to anybody coming to study here," he says, grateful for the friendships he built and eager for the next steps in his journey
Jack Burge fondly remembers the small moments that made RMC feel like home "I'll really miss being able to sit out in the courtyard and always find someone to chat to, or talking to someone new in the dining hall about their home, culture, favourite food etc " For Jack, these everyday interactions brought constant laughter and connection
Working in Maintenance also left a lasting impression on Jack "It's been super memorable, not only because of the fantastic people on the team, but because we can see how our work directly impacts the college " He urges everyone to enjoy the fruits of their labor: "please use the cooking herbs in the veggie patch!"
Jack's time as an RA and RMCSA exec as the '23 Secretary helped him grow in confidence "I've become so much more self-confident and social… mostly, I've learned how to speak up for myself, and listen to others when they're doing the same " Now, as he moves on after three years, Jack looks forward to the next adventure, though he'll always carry fond memories of his time here
Chirag, Kelly, Antonio, and Jack join many other students in saying farewell to RMC this year Each has experienced moments of connection, growth, and joy, and their stories represent the strong bonds forged in our community As they move into the next chapter of their lives, whether continuing their studies, starting a career, or exploring new places, they leave behind memories that will live on in RMC's community
Their presence and impact will stay with us, and as they take on new adventures, we know they will continue to make a difference We wish them all the best, knowing that RMC will always be a place for them to return, to reconnect, and to remember the good times they shared here
