The State Senate campaign turns ugly, very ugly Oliver Koppell’s campaign to unseat incumbent Senator Jeff Klein appears to be in disarray after the former Councilman was forced to fire his campaign manager, Robert Akleh. Mr. Akleh, a Brooklyn resident who is a former organizer for the far-left Working Families Party was discovered to have posted a number of anti-Israel statements which some feel crossed the line into anti-Semitism, on social media sites, including Facebook.. According to the New York Post, on September 21, 2011, “the same day President Obama told the United Nations that America’s commitment to Israel was unshakable, Akleh wrote on Facebook, ‘We live in the United States of Israel,’” The following year, the Post continued, “Akleh was again railing against the Jewish state — this time for upsetting his outing to a Mets game. ‘Just my luck. I go to Citi Field to watch the Mets game and it turns out to be celebrate Israel night smh!!!! [shaking my head]’ he complained on May 30, 2012.” When first given information that Akleh was antagonistic to the Jewish state, Koppell, in conversation with this newspaper,

Pro-Klein supporters apparently “scared off” a pro-Koppell demonstration outside of the district office in Morris Park, which is shared by Klein and Assemblymember Mark Gjonaj. was defensive and supportive of his campaign aide, charging that the criticism of Akleh “smacked of McCarthyism.”

Koppell called Akleh “an Israeli Christian,” careful to note that Akleh was not a member of the Muslim faith. Koppell was

referring to remarks that Akleh made in an article in the Daily Beast about the “Boycott, Divestiture and Sanctions” campaign against Israel describing Akleh’s participation a Brooklyn event supporting BDS. The following day, last Tuesday, Koppell learned of Akleh’s anti-Israel screeds when confronted by reporters for the New York Post. It was after that conversation that he fired Akleh. Koppell admitted that he hadn’t done research into Akleh’s social media posts, but expressed no skepticism or concern over the relationship Akleh had with the far-left Working Families Party, noting that “Dinowitz also has Working Families Party support.” While Dinowitz was less willing to defend his own largely meaningless connection with the Working Families Party, he

was quick to defend his former friend and ally, Oliver Koppell, on the issue of Israel. “I don’t question Oliver’s commitment to Israel,” Dinowitz stated. “That is why it came as such a shock that his campaign manager was such an ardent and outspoken opponent of Israel. I hope in the future Oliver does a better job vetting his employees. And I wonder what his former campaign manager has to say about the vicious murders of three Israeli teens by some of the people he seems to support.” Koppell also defended possible support from the organization now known as “New York Communities for Change,” the radical organization that was once known as ACORN. Investigations and scandal caused the group to officially change its name. Continued on Page 2

Montefiore readies new plans

The Riverdale Review has learned from informed sources, that Montefiore Hospital is on the cusp of revising their plans for a health care facility on a plot of land that lies between Riverdale and Oxford Avenues, south of West 238th St. The Hospital intends to submit their plans within a month, and

is setting up meetings with members of the community and of the Community Board to discuss the new proposal. The Land Use Committee of the Community Board will set up the new meetings, and it was learned that pains are being taken to include even the most vociferous opponents of the plan.

Klein-Koppell dust-up

Continued from Page 1 Ironically this is the group that with the Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition spearheaded the effort to deny Riverdale its own high school (now known as the Riverdale/Kingsbridge Academy). Koppell was a leader in that successful effort but now sees the former bitter enemies of the aspirations of the Riverdale community as his allies in the fight against Klein. According to the Post, “Israel wasn’t the only target of (Akleh’s) social-media ire. “Akleh blasted Gov. Cuomo as a “s– tbird” just three months ago, when state budget negotiations were in full swing. ‘Going up to Albany again to tell that s—tbird Cuomo to get his budget right and not to bite the hands that feed,’ Akleh wrote on March 20.” Koppell’s campaign has other problems. With the announcement by Governor Cuomo and Senator Klein last week that Klein’s Independent Democratic Conference has plans to rejoin mainstream Democrats to form a new majority next session, the very reason for Koppell’s campaign seems to have slipped away. To demonstrate his commitment to the race, Koppell scheduled a press conference in front of Klein’s Morris Park Avenue office last week. But when Koppell arrived, he noticed that supporters of one of Klein’s most vocal backers, Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj, were gathered to protest Koppell’s continued opposition to Klein. Alluding to the bad publicity in the Post, the Klein/Gjonaj faction held up signs saying that they support Klein and Israel. Koppell summarily decided that, clearly outnumbered, he would stand down and cancel his event. There has been bad blood between Gjonaj and Koppell simmering for years. Koppell had been a strong supporter of Assemblywoman Naomi Rivera, daugh-

Boro Prez Diaz launches ‘Bronx100’ Scavenger Hunt Think you know The Bronx? Here’s your chance to prove it. Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and The Bronx Tourism Council announced this past week that entries are on sale for the “Bronx 100 Scavenger Hunt,” which will pit teams of four from all over the region in a competition focusing on Bronx history, culture and the redevelopment of the “New Bronx.” The event will take place all-day on Saturday, July 12, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Bronx County Courthouse. Teams will earn points by taking pictures of various Bronx landmarks and destinations, with the highest scoring team winning $2,500. The day will close with a party for scavenger hunt participants, and will feature other giveaways and prizes. Only 40 teams will have an opportunity to participate in the event. Entries can be purchased for $40 per team at ilovethebronx.com. “Throughout our centennial celebrations we have been focused on highlighting the ‘New Bronx.’ This contest will give teams from all over a chance to learn about our borough, see firsthand the progress we have made, and maybe even win a prize,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. “New York Community Bancorp is proud to be the principal sponsor of the ‘Bronx 100 Scavenger Hunt.’ Great things are happening in The Bronx, and this event will help highlight many of the new projects and new developments that are changing the way the world thinks about this wonderful borough,” said Christopher B. Beck, Vice President of New York Community Bancorp. For more information about the Bronx Centennial celebrations and other borough events, visit ilovethebronx.com

ter of Assemblyman Jose Rivera, one of Koppell’s closest political allies in recent years. Gjonaj defeated Ms. Rivera in the Democratic Primary two years ago. After the rally, Gjonaj told the New York Observer that Koppell was scared off and “He went back to Riverdale where he belongs.” Now on the defensive on Jewish issues, Koppell quickly picked up on this in his own Facebook posting, stating “the subtext of Mr. Gjonaj’s words smack of discrimination. Riverdale is of course known as a Jewish community. I am of the Jewish faith. Is Mr. Gjonaj suggesting that Jews should stay out of Morris Park. I hope to receive a prompt retraction of these sentiments and an apology.” This dust-up reprised itself in an article in the New York Observer this past Tuesday. The Observer quoted Mr. Koppell as charging “ ‘what is he saying when he says I don’t belong in Morris Park, I belong in Riverdale?’ Koppell asked. ‘It smacks of

anti-Semitism. He’s going out of his way to call attention to my Jewish background.’ “Mr. Gjonaj — who is of Albanian descent — dismissed Mr. Koppell’s criticism, pointing out that he has taken part in various activities with the local Jewish community and that Mr. Klein, the person the assemblyman was supporting when he made the remarks, is Jewish. The assemblyman also pointed to a New York Post article from the day of the event that revealed Mr. Koppell’s former campaign manager had made remarks critical of Israel on his personal Facebook page. “‘Mr. Koppell’s statement is ludicrous,’ said Mr. Gjonaj’s spokesman Dylan Tragni. ‘This is just a sad, desperate attempt by Mr. Koppell, who kept his anti-Semitic campaign manager on board until the New York Post exposed his hateful Facebook rants the day of the rally.’ “Mr. Klein’s camp also dismissed Mr. Koppell’s remarks, noting that Mr. Klein is Jewish.”

RIVERDALE DENTAL CARE, P.C. Everybody is welcome including elderly and children from 2.5 years of age

Perils of the Revolution The annual celebration of American independence from Britain every July 4th rightfully leads to praise for the Founding Fathers and the hardships endured by the Continental Army until victory was assured. However, most are unaware of the peril endured by people of the time who were not leaders or soldiers in any army. Day to day living was often a matter of life or death. From the end of 1776 to 1783, today’s Bronx was behind British lines. Tories, American supporters of the British cause, lived as refugees there. Some of them donned uniforms, formed their own militia regiments, and rode northward to steal cattle from farmers to feed the British quartered in New York City. In retaliation, local American militia units rode south to plunder Bronx farmers. Neither of these forces cared whether the hapless victim supported their side or not. For instance, in early 1777, Tory Colonel Robert Rogers made Isaac Valentine’s house his headquarters. Today, the Valentine-Varian House, it stands at Bainbridge Avenue and 208th Street. In Eastchester, Marcus Christian confronted Thomas Fowler who was stealing

three of his cows. Fowler took the cows anyway and then alerted a British unit to arrest Christian as a rebel. Christian was dragged to Valentine’s house to be confronted by Rogers. The Tory colonel immediately condemned Christian to death, and the victim was placed under guard in a room. Luckily, the prisoner was able to escape and to get to safety behind American lines. Years later, 90 American militiamen quietly entered the village of Westchester, near today’s Westchester Square, in the dark of night. They barged into houses where suspected Tories lodged to capture them. In one home, an old blind man emerged fearing that murder would be committed. He was told killing Tory refugees would not be considered murder. Within a half hour, the American party left with the prisoners and their horses in tow. These are only two of the many incidents that Bronx residents had to endure throughout the years of warfare in the American Revolution. Caught between the might of two armies, living in no man’s land, their lives were in constant peril. Although civilians, they, too, deserve to be recognized as veterans.

Operation Backpack 2014 to support homeless children

Join Bronx Community Board No. 8 and Volunteers of America-Greater New York in launching ‘Operation Backpack 2014,’ to support homeless children. Volunteers of America-Greater New York has an annual drive to collect brand new backpacks and new school supplies for the thousands of children living in New York City shelters. The Board office, located at 5676 Riverdale Avenue, Suite 100, will be a DROP SITE for backpacks from 9:30PM to 4:30PM daily. The campaign kicks off on Monday, July 14th and the Board office will accept backpacks through July 31st. Additionally, in a continuing partnership with Volunteers of America-Greater New York, every Duane Reade location will be accepting donations of new backpacks and school supplies from the public. Dozens of companies, schools, community groups, and religious institutions will also host collection drives. Thousands of children live in NYC’s homeless and domestic violence shelters and Rachel Weinstein, Vice-President/ Chief Development and Communications Officer of Volunteers of America-Greater New York, speaks of the importance of the program. ‘We need to equip children with all the tools to allow them to succeed in school, because a high school diploma is essential to breaking the cycle of homelessness. Operation Backpack is vital because a new backpack and supplies can be the difference between a child being excited to go to school and refusing to go. And with the average cost of a filled backpack hovering around $81, we can relieve the financial burden that many parents face when making decisions for their families.’

This year’s goal is to collect 16,500 backpacks! The public is urged to drop new backpacks and school supplies at Bronx Community Board #8 offices located at 5676 Riverdale Avenue, Suite 100, Bronx, New York, 10471 or at any Duane Reade in New York City from July 14th to August 8th. Join us for a 7-week series of workshops led by John Maney, where we’ll explore the use of our five senses – smell, taste, touch, sight, and hearing – to enhance everyday and creative writing. We’ll examine how most of us understand the world through our senses, and how accessing them can help participants find their unique voices. We’ll also learn how to invoke the senses, so people not just read the stories and poems participants write, but experience them. For more information, call 718-548-5656.

Dinowitz on Hobby Lobby decision Assemblyman Dinowitz says Hobby Lobby sets a very Dangerous Precedent, Strikes Blow to Women’s Equality “I am absolutely outraged by today’s Hobby Lobby Supreme Court decision, which explicitly allows for-profit companies to eliminate or limit the birth control coverage their employees receive. It’s hard to believe we live in a country where the Supreme Court believes it is okay for businesses to deny basic health care to women based on their owners’ religious beliefs. A decision made by a woman regarding her own health is no business of the people she works for; a person’s boss shouldn’t have a say in their family planning. Period. “This ruling highlights the importance

of passing legislation in our state to protect women’s rights, including all 10 points of the Women’s Equality Act. By passing each and every one of the points in the WEA, we would not only ensure a woman’s reproductive rights and pay equity, but also further protect women from all forms of harassment, discrimination, not to mention strengthening the anti-human trafficking law of 2007, which I authored. “It is simply astounding that in this day and age a business owner can impose their own religious values on their employees. While we have worked hard to pass legislation in the Assembly that would prevent employers from discriminating against an employee on the basis of the individual’s or a dependent’s decisions about their own health and body, there is more work to be done and I will continue fighting for women in our state until full equality for women is a reality.”

KHCC Teen Green Market & Play Street

Bronx Community Board No. 8 (BXCB8) announces the openings of two youth run farmers markets. The Marble Hill Youthmarket is in its sixth successful year. This market was initiated by Bronx Community Board No. 8 in collaboration with community partners Bon Secours NY Health System, Kingsbridge Heights Community Center and Riverdale Neighborhood House. This

GrowNYC innovative program brings fresh fruits and vegetables into underserved areas. The Youthmarket is located on West 225th Street between Broadway and Exterior Street, from 2PM to 6 PM on Thursdays from July 10th through November 20th. The KHCC Teen Green Market brings fresh fruits and vegetables to the Kingsbridge Heights area. It is located on 3101 Kingsbridge Terrace between Summit Place and Perot Street. The market will operate every Friday from July 11th through September 5th, 10AM to 5PM. It is sponsored by Bronx Community Board No. 8 and Kingsbridge Heights Community Center (KHCC). The KHCC Play Street will be located in the same location on Fridays in July and August from 10AM to 2PM. The street will be closed to vehicular traffic and will host lots of children’s healthy activities. Play streets, a citywide program led by the New York City Departments of Health & Mental Hygiene and Transportation, not only helps to reduce the obesity, but also strengthens relationships between local organizations and the families that they serve.

Supported by Friends of Van Cortlandt Park. Bronx Community Board No.8 (BXCB8) plays an important role in improving the quality of life for the communities it serves. BXCB8 is a vital liaison and advocate for the community in dealing with New York City government, elected officials, municipal service delivery, land use and zoning issues, community and business development, the City budget and many other matters relating to the community’s health, safety and welfare.

Playing with Fire The campaign for State Senator in the local 34th District, which covers much of the north Bronx parts of Westchester County has turned ugly. It started when the Koppell campaign was rocked by revelations that its new campaign manager, Robert Akleh, was a vociferous opponent of the State of Israel and the Zionist movement. There is no evidence that Mr. Koppell knew of this, and indeed Akleh was fired immediately. But Mr. Koppell does not escape blame for what happened next. Seeking to change the subject, Koppell announced that his supporters will picket the offices of Senator Jeff Klein on Morris Park Avenue. Mr. Klein shares his office space with Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj, who also represents this area and is enormously popular there. It isn’t surprising that Mr. Gjonaj and Mr. Klein have become fast friends. They are mutually supportive and Mr. Gjonaj has pledged his full support to the Klein campaign. We have published a photo of a rally that Mr. Gjonaj organized in support of his friend Mr. Klein. This shows a large and energetic crowd, with some carrying the kind of sign that Mr. Koppell least wanted to see at that particular moment of time. Supporters were carrying signs declaring their support of Mr. Klein and the State of Israel, a clear attempt to embarrass Mr. Koppell, still smarting from having to fire his campaign manager for uttering some of the most strident anti-Israel statements we have ever encounter. Koppell was spotted driving around the block, may well have been scared by what he saw, and cancelled his rally right then and there. Hearing of this, Mr. Klein boasted that he has sent Mr, Koppell “back to Riverdale” where he belongs. Immediately, Koppell started yelling “anti-Semitism.” Koppell’s logic is faulty. While there is certainly a wellknown recognition of a large Jewish presence in Riverdale, this community is seen differently than just through an ethnic prism. Perhaps the way most Bronxites outside of Riverdale see that corner of The Bronx is as an economic power, where folks are more affluent than in the rest of the borough. We think that the parishioners of St Gabriel’s. St, Margaret’s, The Church of the Mediator, the Riverdale Presbyterian Church, the Riverdale Episcopal Church, etc., can attest to the religious diversity here. In any case, Mr. Gjonaj clearly did not attempt to cast any negative ethnic stereotypes here. In fact, Mr. Gjonaj is extraordinarily popular among Jews living in his community. He routinely is given awards by Jewish groups. And, of course, most powerfully, while it is true that Mr. Koppell is a Jewish candidate that Mr. Gjonaj is NOT supporting, Mr, Klein is a Jewish candidate that Mr. Gjonaj is backing 100%. Only Oliver Koppell, so blind to the anti-Semitism in his own staff, would make false charges such as these on Mr. Gjonaj. We were proud to support Mark Gjonaj in 2012 and we are confident that he doesn’t have an anti-Semitic bone in his body. Can we say the same of Mr. Koppell’s former campaign manager, Mr. Akleh? It is time for Mr. Koppell to shut up, before he does any more damage to intergroup relations in our borough. He is playing with fire with false charges such as these. Hopefully he will be the only one to get burned.

Soda ban overturned: How sweet it is Editorial of The New York Sun, June 26, 2014 Reprinted with Permission “We hold that the New York City Board of Health, in adopting the ‘Sugary Drinks Portion Cap Rule,’ exceeded the scope of its regulatory authority. By choosing among competing policy goals, without any legislative delegation or guidance, the Board engaged in law-making and thus infringed upon the legislative jurisdiction of the City Council of New York.” *** Those are the words with which New York state’s highest court put paid Mayor Bloomberg’s ban on large sugary sodas. The ruling sustains Justice Milton Tingling’s ruling, which in March of last year found that the city’s Commissioner of Mental Hygiene, Thomas Farley, and the other members of the board of health had no basis whatsoever in the law or city charter to do what they had done. It gave a straightforward answer to Mr. Bloomberg, who had ridiculed Justice Tingling’s ruling, saying it was “clearly in error” and declaring, “we believe we will win on appeal.” This is a teaching moment for all of New York. The American system — at the federal and state level — is a system of republican government. Republican not in the sense

of Republican Party but in the sense of representative democracy in which elected officials are granted certain powers, the powers are enumerated, they are written down, they are separated among branches, and they are limited. The grants of power to the federal government are made in the Constitution, to the state government in the State Constitution, and to the city government in the State Constitution and the City Charter. What is so wonderful about the decision of the Court of Appeals yesterday is the vindication it gives to a certain kind of judging. Justice Tingling went into his chambers and read every iteration of the New York City Charter back to the 1600s. What he discovered was startling. In granting powers to a Board of Health, the people were worried not about how fat we were or whether we, say, stayed out in the sun too long. They were worried about germs and communicable diseases. They did not mean to tell us how to balance the costs and benefits of our own diet. And the people were most assuredly not intending to create a second legislature other than the City Council. The most reassuring thing about the sugary soda case is the bluntness with which the lower and higher

courts rejected the astounding arrogance of Dr. Farley and the Board of Health and Mental Hygiene. The were claiming inherent law-making authority. They weren’t worried about health. They were grabbing power. The Court of Appeals saw through that plain as day. As did the labor and industry groups at whose expense Dr. Farley & Co. were acting. Congratulations to them are in order. But with a cautionary note. But six of the Court of Appeals’ seven judges participated in the soda decision. Judge Rivera did not take part. Chief Judge Lippman dissented, as did Judge Read. So the decision was by four judges, Pigott, Smith, Graffeo, and Abdus-Salaam. Two of those judges are appointees of a limited government Republican governor, George Pataki. Judge Graffeo’s term expires at the end of the year. She could be either reappointed, which New Yorkers deserve, or replaced. Judge Smith turns 70 this summer and must retire. The editor of the New York Sun, writing in the New York Post, suggests that Justice Tingling would be an ideal choice to replace Judge Smith. We agree. For even though the Court spoke clearly and resoundingly, it did not do so by a large margin. This is a moment to maintain humility and be alert. All the courts that have looked at this leave open the possibility that the legislature does have law-making authority to address the diet questions. We dispute that, but the courts did not. So attention will need to be paid that the city council or state legislature does not step in to take away our freedom of choice on what to eat or drink. Welcome to the new age.
