Introduction

The history of dolls as told through the fabrics and styles of the clothes they wore, from gowns and dresses to bonnets, shoes, and accessories, is told in this specialty cataloged auction of antique doll costumes and accessories from the Nancy Smith and Rosalie Whyel Collections. The collection features over 300 lots, some comprising complete ensembles, other being notable individual pieces ranging from exquisite gowns and dresses to rare signed shoes, Paris bonnets, costumes of the early 1800s, gentleman’s accessories, costumes in original boxes, couturier dresses and more. x

1. Early Cotton Print Dress Lady Gown with Woven Purse

Of finely woven cream cotton with petite scaled pattern of tiny flowers and vines, the high-waisted dress with rounded neck has fitted darts in the bodice, self-piping, dramatic gigot sleeves, and three bands of tucks around the hem, with hook and eye closure. Included is early embroidery woven purse with silk upper, and woolen ball tassels. To fit 32”-34” lady

2. Early Petite Lady Gown with Transfer Design Muslin

Of fine muslin with dainty transfer designs of trailing vines and flowers, the gown features a rounded neck with lace edging, fitted waist, wide pagoda-shaped lace-edged sleeves, cartridge-pleated full skirt. 3. Early Woven Bonnet and Unusual Canvas and Leather Boots

The woven poke bonnet has braided decorative borders and is decorated with embroidered ribbon, with muslin lining having embroidered details around the inner brim. 2” inside head diam. Along with 2 ½” l. boots with leather fronts and canvas sides with lacing holes, cobbled leather and wooden soles. Circa 1860. Bonnet excellent, shoes missing lacing and are worn around upper edge. $200/300

4. Early Fine Muslin High-Waist Lady Gown with Woven Bonnet

Of densely-woven muslin in russet-golden color, the high waist gown with rounded neckline features gigot sleeves with dense ruching at the upper sleeve and fitted cuffs, self-piping on the fully-lined bodice, fitted waist above pleated skirt which terminates in added ruffle at the hem, hook and eye closure. To fit 24”-26” lady doll. 21” overall length. 6” shoulder width. 11” circ. waist. Excellent condition. Of intricate silk in an elaborately interwoven narrow striped design and black silk band, the two-piece set includes fitted cap with stitched-down gathered brim and bavolet at the back of neck. Of dark brown cotton with tiny dotted design, the gown features a tightly-fitted waist below V-shaped bodice with gathering at the waist, dramatically full gigot sleeves with cartridge pleats at the shoulders and fitted cuffs, cartridge pleating around the waist. 9. Early Cotton Dress with Lady Doll

The printed cotton dress has alternating bands of floral design against a brown or cream background, with dart-shaped bodice, rounded collar with self banding, elbow-length flared sleeves, set-in waist band with very full cartridge pleated skirt, two borders of gold/cream braid at the bottom skirt, button and loop closure at the back, with attached underskirt of variant cotton print. Very good condition, some fabric age wear on skirt. For 20” doll. 14” overall length. 4” shoulder width. Circa 1880. $200/300

10. Silk Bonnet with Metallic and Embroidered Trim

Blue silk bonnet with linen lining has floral embroidery on side, back and crown that is framed by metallic thread embroidery and accented with burgundy and blue edged ribbons and bows, and with lace edging around the face. 4” face diam., for doll about 17”-21”. 11. Early White Linen Gown with Crewel Printed Fabric

Of crisp white linen having crewel-themed transfer pattern design of flowers and vines, the gown has elbow-length sleeves with stitched-down pleats, button front with tiny self-covered buttons and hand-made button holes, self-ruffles at the waist and a very full gathered overskirt which is open at the center front, above a gathered underskirt. 15. Early Lady Dress of Rare Gauze Fabric with Interwoven Ribbons

Of sheer cream muslin with interwoven vertical bands of ivory silk and transfer designs of autumn leaves, the high-waist dress with rounded neckline has fullylined gathered bodice, red silk sash, dramatically full gigot sleeves with fitted cuffs, flat skirt front framed by pleats which edge into gathers at the back, and with an embroidered braid around the skirt. The cap designed to fit to back of head is of delicatelypatterned forest green with floral and geometric designs and is decorated with all-around pleated silk gauze band with embroidered edging overlaid on coral silk under-band, and with six identical bands at the back of cap. 18. Silk-Covered Top Hat for Gentleman 3” h. 3” inside head diam. The firmly-sided top hat is covered with silver/ivory silk and is decorated with black banding. The interior is silk lined and has gilt label of “Patent Meissbach”. Very good condition, some wear to band. Circa 1840. $200/300

19. Sheer White Muslin Lady Gown with Embroidered Detail, with Lace Bonnet

Of very delicate sheer white muslin, with fitted waist and pagoda style sleeves, the high neck gown is enhanced with hand-applied banding around the skirt, set-in waist band, and unusual accented white flower in horizontal embroidery technique. For 19”-21” lady doll. 16” overall length. 5” shoulder width. 9” waist. Excellent condition except few small tears in muslin. Circa 1850. The 28-blade folding fan is richly hand-painted on front with idyllic garden scene featuring two people and cupid, along with decorative borders and medallions, and on the reverse side with mountain views. Excellent condition. 7” l. Mid-1800s. $500/700

Having fully-lined brown velvet bodice with slender dart shaping, elbow-length fitted sleeves with tatting at the edges, twill-padded ivory silk skirt which is richly embroidered with silk threads creating a garden of white, yellow and red flowers with trailing vines and little buds. Of very fine ivory/silver satin, the gown features a fitted bodice with pleated sheer lace at the rounded neckline above an edging of silver metallic thread that is repeated at the waist

and at the hem, and with a richly embroidered crewel-like embroidery with silver thread motif at the center; the skirt with flat front panel edging by darts is also lavishly embroidered with flowers, vines and a center panel in a larger scale than the embroidery of the bodice; the back panel of the skirt is stiffened twill suggesting its purpose as under-gown for long outer robe.
