Like many of us may have, Georgia Goud spent her summer in the garden, chatting with her neighbours. What is different about Georgia’s neighbourly chats however, is that you can listen in using a QR code stuck to the front window of Raquel’s Skin Care Centre on Edwardes Street alongside her photos.

Georgia, myself and 13 other local artists were commissioned by Council to create artworks for Reservoir shop fronts as part of FUSE Darebin’s ‘Made in Rezza’ program. These artworks can be found on the streets surrounding Reservoir Station until the 27th of March and cover a wide range of media including sculpture, dance, printmaking, installation and photography. Each artwork is accompanied by a QR code linking to a video of the artist, produced

by Alana Thompson of Black Ant Films.

On display at Knochen Joint on Broadway, my own piece ‘The Odyssey’ is an altarpiece made of hard rubbish, containing 11 linocut prints. (A quick aside for those unfamiliar with printmaking: linocut is the process of carving a stamp into a linoleum block and printing that block usually onto paper) The prints each depict a scene from the Odyssey set in Reservoir, using local imagery and humour. As I spent my summer contemplating how to combine the Broadway fish and chips shark with an ancient epic*, I wondered

how other artists were translating their relationships with Reservoir into their artworks.

I asked Georgia how living in Reservoir inspired her work. She explained that during walks around the neighbourhood, she discovered three particular gardens which were, “beautiful in different ways and clearly the result of deliberate, inspired visions; dreamt up, then homemade’, and now carefully maintained.” She sought out to understand and document the creative processes behind these gardens. Her piece ‘The Village’ includes photos of her neighbours’ gardens and interviews available in English and Italian.

Cristal Johnson also used the ‘Made in Rezza’ project to connect with the community in Reservoir. She told me that she was, “thrilled to collaborate with four local food vendors on this project, to learn about the origins of their business, along with the delicious foods

that represent the different cultures that make up Reservoir village.” For her piece ‘High Value’, she interviewed four food vendors on their history in Reservoir and translated those interviews into the vendor’s language. Those interviews then spawned bronze sculptures of food items from each vendor, currently on display at Il Pasticcino on Edwardes Street.

On my way to buy groceries, I watched people stop to look at the artworks.

One thing I love about public artwork is that the audience is not limited to the type of people who are likely to visit art galleries. The ‘Made in Rezza’ artworks are for kids, nonnas; people just buying their groceries that day. Some works, like Georgia and Cristal’s, are specifically about people living and working in Reservoir. Many of the artworks aim to include, celebrate and sometimes challenge the local audience. Sarah Rudledge’s piece ‘Reservoir Social Club – All Plants Welcome’ may do all of those

things. Her artwork is an installation of houseplants contributed by community members, currently on display at Sunny Electronics on Broadway.

Chris Gooch noted that he had younger audiences in mind when creating his playful work ‘Funhouse’, on display at Kids on Broadway. His series of risograph prints uses bright colours to twist local imagery into something a bit more surreal. Chris told me, “Each drawing is based on an existing shopfront, and takes a distinctive element and uses that as a springboard to create a new, imagined building.”

Walking my usual route to grab a coffee, I think that Chris’s work might be a fitting metaphor for the whole ‘Made in Rezza’ project really. I encounter familiar, everyday sights which for the next month have been transformed into something more colourful, more thought-provoking, and a bit more surreal.

Dardi Munwurro: Part of the healing process is learning to accept that all emotions are valid Viki Komornik discovers a local community organisation empowering Indigenous men

A big part of what I love about contributing to The Rezzadent is that I get to discover our area, meet new people and focus on the positive news. There are so many individuals, organisations and community groups working tirelessly to improve people’s lives through fantastic initiatives. One of these is Dardi Munwurro.

I caught up with Coree at their High Street location (558 High St, Preston), in a wonderful open space, at Aunty Alma Thorpe’s Gathering Place. Dardi Munwurro is the brainchild of Alan Thorpe and John Byrne. They began in 2000 and worked tirelessly out of their car for the following 14 years.

Since then they’ve worked from their

High Street location, a wonderful space benefiting everyone.

Their work encompasses a wide variety of programs which are all aimed at helping Aboriginal men who are at risk of, or use family violence, or are drug addicts.

Alan and John understood that taking ownership and responsibility over one’s actions does not come easy to everyone.

By creating a non-shaming environment there is more opportunity for healing and behavioural change.

A keyword in all of this is ‘empowerment’. of control. When you read these it all sounds logical, and it’s nothing you probably haven’t heard before. However, it is easier to say than it is to implement.

One needs positive role models, pathways in life, education, strong identity and the list goes on. There is no exception, we, as humans, all need these.

Life can be difficult even with all of these in place. Missing out on one or more, increases the chance of a person ending up in Australia’s prison system.

Dardi Munwurro recognised this early on and started their Youth Program, the Bramung Jaarn program, about seven years ago. It aims to support young Aboriginal men aged 10-25 years through one on one mentoring, with strong, positive role models.

The need for social and cultural connection cannot be underestimated and the volunteers at Dardi Munwurro are there to encourage and facilitate this connection, strengthening Aboriginal identity.

The residential healing and behaviour change program for Aboriginal men who use, or are at risk of using family violence is outstanding. Not only because it runs for 16 weeks but for its ongoing support to both the men

and their family members. The basis for their healing is similar to the basis for all their programs; strong cultural identity, healthy relationships and taking responsibility for one’s actions. This program has been running for four years and has an approximate 80% completion rate.

The organisation is in a state of constant evolution. The Youth Hub - a cafe - will give the Aboriginal young men an opportunity to learn how to run and manage a cafe. There is a future plan to build a kitchen, to gain skills for working in hospitality. The Koori Market will not only give visibility to Aboriginal artists but will also allow the youth to develop leadership and coordination skills. These social enterprises will benefit not only

the participants, but the community as a whole. The youth holds the key to overcoming the trans-generational trauma that is still raw in many Aboriginal people.

The community groups within Dardi Munwurro welcome Aboriginal men to join as often as they wish. Part of the healing process is learning to accept that all their emotions are valid. Gaining reflection, empathy and understanding are all necessary towards changing their behaviour.

They also offer the 24 hour Brother to Brother crisis phone support line for those who need immediate help, someone to talk to about these issues or who are struggling to cope.

Similarly to family violence, addiction is also not viewed as punitive at Dardi Munwurro. The same healing process is followed, letting the participants follow their own journey, learning to understand their own accountability.

A keyword in all of this is ‘empowerment’. Empowering Aboriginal men to achieve the best they can, both to themselves and those around them.

Their main building is in Preston but they also have representation in Dandenong, Shepparton, Warrnambooll, Bairnsdale, Morwell and Thomastown. Where the Aboriginal community is willing, Dardi Munwurro works with the locals to establish their services. They hire people from the local areas and the elders or other members from the local Aboriginal communities, work with those attending the programs. It truly is a community effort.

Dardi Munwurro is a private non profit organisation but it is only successful because the Aboriginal communities in those areas believe in them and participate.

Speaking with Coree, there is still

plenty to look forward to. I already mentioned the cafe which will open at 273 High Street, Preston towards the end of March - keep an eye out for it! They are also working on expanding their music program, training more Aboriginal facilitators and inviting locals to cultural immersion events. Building partnerships with other organisations such as Bridge Darebin, is another step towards involving the wider community and increasing the success of their programs.

Of course, Dardi Munwurro cannot help everyone. The person who needs help must recognise they need help first, then come to ask for help. This is not an easy step, but once they ask for help, Dardi Munwurro is there for them every step of the way.

CANCELLED PLANS HARD TO COME BY IN RESERVOIR Words by Panda Sanders Reservoir introverts society (RIS) today have announced their plan to make a plan in order to support their community post pandemic.

"Our community has been rocked by the sudden return 2 (sic) normalcy :-(," says the RIS Chair Annetta Day via text message.

The group, who have yet to meet in person, are rallying around each other now shorter isolation periods are in effect and pubs are well and truly open.

"We thought Omicron would give us another year or 2 of canceling plans but now we are not so sure haha :-S..."

Day says the group are most concerned for members who seem to have formed an addiction to putting things in the diary they never intended to do.

With shorter iso periods and the speed of RAT test turn-arounds, on the spot rescheduling is becoming commonplace.

Dr David Sinclair, a local psychological researcher, believes extroverted residents are so starved for social engagements, they're not letting cancellations come easy.

"Many introverts fell into the habit of accepting plans to look more outgoing over the last two years, now they are facing extroverts who can't bear to spend another day alone."

RIS Chair Annetta Day has this to say, "We're hoping to set up a support hotline or something.”

“We were going to catch up last Thursday to make a plan but footy season has started and it's so much better watching from the couch...we've penciled in a meeting at the Hard Rubbish next Saturday...we'll see how to go."

Garden of Love After a spot of rain Sylvia page found an unexpected object in her garden bed

I’ve put a lot of love into our new garden. I’ve spent the past two years caring for it, spending time with it, learning its ways. I did not expect it to return the love with a marriage proposal.

My partner and I adopted Rezza as our home 14 years ago and in 2020 we moved to a bigger house. The new property came with a garden of roses and lawn.

Our dream was to return our small patch of Wurundjeri land back to an indigenous grassland, with original local vegetation.

Section by section, with spades and some help from our 8 and 9 year olds, we dug the lawn out by hand and replanted with local grasses: wallaby, kangaroo and tussock. Next came the flowers: everlasting buttons, bluebells and lilies. A labour of love, but pandemics at least make for plenty of time in the garden. Using the book Flora of Melbourne and the Naturekit program I pinpointed our patch and learned about the preEuropean vegetation type,

Plains Grassland. I visited Njarri-djarrang (Central Creek Grassland) regularly to envisage what this landscape was like. It’s easy to fall in love with this type of expansive tussock grassland scattered with daisies, lilies, bluebells and peas.

Finding the plants was tricky at times in lockdown but luckily a friend works at Edendale nursery so was able to deliver, and I also volunteer at Nangak Tamboree (Latrobe indigenous nursery).

Just as the last bed was turned over and we had two days of delicious rain, it emerged.

At first, I assumed it was a piece of rubbish, a ring pulled off a can. When I picked it up, I could not believe my eyes. My garden had proposed with a traditional engagement ring: a ruby and two diamonds. On checking with the previous owners and neighbours we could not find the original owner so many possible stories were considered. Picture a jilted lover in a rage piffing the ring over the fence. Or the more sinister question from friends, “Did you find any finger bones while you were digging?" The answer was no. Another more whimsical, and my favourite story, was that the earth garden forged the ruby and diamonds as a gift for all the hard work we have put into creating a beautiful biodiversity

haven for local insects and wildlife.

I have been amazed at how fast the garden has been established, using plants that are suited to the clay soil with very little modification. Insects have loved the transformation; I’ve recorded several different beetles, native wasps, hover flies, blue-banded bees, and dragon/damselflies. I am fortunate to have several of the beautiful blue-flowered endangered Dianella amoena (matted flax lily) thriving in the clay soil. My dream for the future is to have some of the orchids that used

to flower so profusely it was like “snow in the paddocks”. Unfortunately, these grasslands were so decimated by grazing, that some of these plants are now endangered or nearly extinct and very difficult to source.

Like the garden, the ring itself has received a transformation into a new setting by Nina, an amazing jeweller friend, another Rezza local (Nina Ellis jewellery).

When I wear the ring every day, I feel so lucky that my garden proposed to me… in case you’re wondering, I said YES!

An Enchanted Adventure Camp

This month I went to my first ever Girl Guides Camp with my seven year old daughter. I didn’t know what to expect, I was simply happy to go with the flow and enjoy the joyful, childlike anticipation my daughter felt in the weeks prior.

The Gumnuts (aged 5-7) from the Reservoir Girl Guides unit were going on an Enchanted Adventure Camp. Two nights sleeping in a separate wing from the mums. While I was quite sure my daughter would be ok with that, I wasn’t so sure about me being rooms away

lunches into their backpacks and off they went for a bush walk and low ropes. Us mums were given the difficult task of driving into town to enjoy a coffee. Life that morning was hard ( ha! ) We were looking forward to our bush walk, archery and yoga which was on cards for the day.

Archery was made more fun by naming our targets after some well known politicians. The evening was spent with everyone sitting around singing camp songs.

During the sessions leading up to the camp, kids and their leaders discussed what food they will have (bow pasta with sauce) what activities they will enjoy (games, low ropes, bushwalking, yoga) and what is expected from them (pack your own bag, give everything a go, help each other).

Finally, after school that Friday, we packed the car and drove off on our road trip to Rowallan, an hour north from Reservoir. Following a dirt road near the camp, as if on a cue, we had a kangaroo hopping across the road in front of us.

Our accommodation was at the Girl Guides camp, Minda Killara, in a brick building surrounded by native bushland.

Excitement levels were high on Friday evening with craft and play time, followed by sausages for dinner.

Everyone, including the mums, had a task to do. We all helped out one way or another. Kids and mums got stickers for every achievement, such as helping a leader or trying a new food. Guides work together and help each other.

What I took away from this weekend is the beginning of new friendships and an even higher appreciation for the volunteering work the guide leaders do with our kids. We loved listening to the leaders’ stories from their years as young girl guides, the relationships and friendships they built, and how all these experiences continue to shape them into the wonderful human beings they all are.

Smoked salmon crustless quiches At the fabulous big picnic at Edwards Lake Park last month, I was asked for the recipe for the individual crustless smoked salmon quiches I brought along. So here it is.

Recipe by Jenny Brown

Ingredients

Method

1 red onion

1. Put onion in a food processor and process until chopped.

200 grams smoked salmon 1 tablespoon capers 3 eggs ¼ cup butter melted 1 cup cream ½ cup self-raising flour 1 cup grated cheese A couple of sprigs fresh dill

2. Add all remaining ingredients except smoked salmon and process until well mixed.

3. Add smoked salmon and process until roughly chopped into mixture.

4. Spoon mixture into Kmart (or other brand) individual pie maker and cook for approximately 10 minutes until slightly browned on top.

5. Turn out onto a cooling rack and cook the next batch.

Note: This quantity made 12 quiches in the Kmart pie maker, which is 3 batches.

You could also do this in a muffin tray or similar in a regular oven, or just as one big slab and cut into squares.

P.S. I have since made this in a rectangular baking dish and cooked it for about 30 minutes at 180 degrees Celsius. Just as tasty. Very nice with a salad on the side.

Hello, thank you for the great question! I'm sorry I am still new at English. I am from the Netherlands but since I moved here with my new family I have come to love Reservoir! And there are so many things to do! I would say my big party nights are in the past but this suburb has a lot to offer everyone.

For me, you know, I like to start with a nice beer these days. Future Mountain brewery or Hawkers brewery, if you want to go to the source. If you want a bit more Berlin-chique then Hard Rubbish is great fun. Oh, and High and Wild, such a beautiful space with delicious drink choices. My family takes me to all of these places and I receive the best pats and great service.

Then for food, my god we have too many options! La Pinta, down the road from High and Wild has beautiful Spanish cuisine, My Asian Neighbour has the tastiest south-east asian dishes. There's American BBQ, Italian, Lebanese and so many others! My masters often come home smelling of these places.

Even after dinner events are on offer. The Ragtime Tavern has a grand piano built into its bar for a rocking good time every weekend. So much to see and do, let me know how you go and if you find something mega cool, please share! Tot ziens!

Mundane Delights Life is often boring, a column on how you can embrace it. By Shannon KcKeogh I was reading an article in The Guardian about a study on what people find boring. It turns out to be quite a lot of things, such as a profession in accountancy or insurance or enjoying a hobby like bird-watching. Complaining or talking about yourself also tends to make people yawn.

Based on this research, narcissistic accountants who spend their weekends twitching while simultaneously complaining about any remaining COVID restrictions reign the boredom throne.

Why my mum continues to talk on the phone for another 15-45 minutes even when I’ve told her I need to go and what some strategies are to solve this ongoing lifelong problem (note: telling her I’m busting to go to the loo does not work!)

Why I continued to watch Byron Baes even though I told the TV and my dog Ernie and my partner Dan - ‘This show is terrible!’ multiple times and whether I should buy more linen?

Do you play wordle? (Bound to lead to at least 30 minutes of solid conversation about vowels) Have you ever been to a bush dance? Did you do the heel and toe?

Do you come to barbeques often?

On the flip-side, journalists are seen as the most interesting bunch. Which is interesting, because I know quite a few journalists, and work with them, and boy do they know how to talk about themselves and also complain simultaneously.

So, in short, based on my own experiences, and not any legit studies, that the assumptions we make about people and what they do is rubbish.

I personally don’t like talking about my day job. I strongly dislike the social etiquette that the first question we ask a new person is what they do. Because don’t we ‘do’ a lot of things?

It’s especially bad when you’re at a barbeque and just wanting to scoff down a sausage smothered in tomato sauce, (and it’s undoubtedly all over your face) and someone asks you that question, but now you must mentally think of how to

Remember Rezzadents, time is limited, so we might as well talk about something else apart from you know, that part of our time spent earning a buck.

I think I can safely say that we all left with some tasty garden goodies (in our bellies or baskets), and an increased feeling of warmth and connection. Reservoir has got each other, and is growing wonderfully!

We had a brief opportunity for each person to share their vision for Reservoir.

Some general themes and ideas which arose; •

A heartening sentiment that community is important, and will help us through adverse challenges (climate, etc)

Idea to continue this as monthly gatherings with Produce swaps, seed swaps, shared music, lunch, etc.

A musician or two were with us, who love to add to the vibe with their gifts, and would possibly love to involve the kids in music play, in future
