As we close the pages on another year, the December edition of The Review Smiths feels like a moment to pause, breathe and appreciate the small things that make this season special. I have just finished watching the live action One Piece series, it is such a fun and wild ride, I loved seeing these beautiful fictional worlds brought to life. Now you can build, display and play with one of these amazing locations
The Baratie Floating Restaurant. This Lego set captures the charm of the sea bound eatery with an impressive level of detail that makes building and displaying it a real pleasure. From the moment you open the box you can tell that a lot of care has gone into recreating the lively atmosphere of the floating restaurant and it shows in every section of the model.
The outside is full of character with its bright colours, curved lines and distinctive fish shaped bow. The building process feels straightforward and satisfying and the final look is sturdy and full of detail. The set opens out to reveal a fully equipped kitchen, a dining hall and a range of small touches that bring the story to life, such as the stove, the preparation tables and the decorative fittings that match the style of the show like the iconic transponder snail (snail telephone).
This 3,402-piece set comes with 10 mini figures, Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji, Zeff, Garp, Helmeppo, Koby and Mihawk. Their designs are full of personality, and they fit perfectly into the different parts of the restaurant. The set also includes small accessories like utensils, plates and bits of food that add to the playful feel.
Fans of One Piece will appreciate how well-known moments are represented, but even someone who is not familiar with the series will enjoy the impressive variety of rooms and the imaginative design. If you regularly have days where your brain just won’t switch off, or you’re dragging through the day with low-level tension and fatigue, the ZenoWell Vita might just feel like a breath of fresh air. This wearable device aims to stimulate the auricular branch of your vagus nerve to help reset your body’s calm mode and improve sleep, ease stress and soothe body pain. Getting started is straightforward. You put a little gel or water on the earpiece and insert it into your left ear (that side is chosen because clinical studies favour it) and select one of three modes: Sleep, Relax or Medit.
In Sleep mode you use it before bed to help wind down; Relax mode gives you a reset during a day of tension; Medit mode supports mindfulness and energy via breath-synced stimulation. The idea of activating parasympathetic nervous system responses, this is our rest and digest system as oppose to our sympathetic nervous system which is our active, fight or flight system. When this area is activated, it can improve GI function and releasing natural pain-relieving chemicals, although I loath to use a buzz word it is basically biohacking the body’s own features. On the flip side, it is a wearable neurotech thing, so it does bring in some caveats. First, the device is not suitable for everyone, people with pacemakers, epilepsy, children under 18 or pregnant individuals (without a doctor’s approval) are advised to avoid it. Also, although it is clearly marketed as clinically backed, results will vary and this isn’t a guarantee of dramatic change overnight. The fit can matter (if it causes stinging you need to adjust or re-moisten) and you’ll want to commit to regular use rather than expect a single session to fix things. For me I would be more wary if it DID claim to fix things over night because this isn’t how our brains and bodies work.
In short, the ZenoWell Vita offers a modern and science-forward way to address sleep, stress and fatigue via vagus nerve stimulation. If you’re open to a wearable, willing to use it daily and more importantly have the money to invest it could be a valuable addition in the toolbox of wellness. Just bear in mind it is a supportive device, not a miracle fix, and always check with your doctor if you have underlying health issues.

Like it or not kids are always going to want a phone at some stage, so what better way to teach them how to use one responiblily than with one specifically designed with their safety in mind. The Pinwheel Slim 6 is a sensible first phone for children. It looks and feels like a normal modern smartphone, but the software keeps things calm and controlled for both young users and parents. The phone is based on solid Motorola hardware while running the Pinwheel operating system, which focuses on safety, supervision and healthy digital habits.
The feature that will appeal to the parents is the Caregiver Portal, an online dashboard where guardians can manage almost every aspect of the phone. You can remotely choose which contacts are allowed, view messages and call history, set limits for use during school time or bedtime, and decide which apps can be installed. This makes the phone feel personal to the child while still keeping the adult fully in control. However it is worth noting this feature costs £15.99 per month.
The app library is another strong point. Instead of a completely open store, Pinwheel offers a large selection of approved apps that are suitable for different ages. There is no social media or open web browser by default, which reduces exposure to harmful or distracting content.
On the hardware side, the Slim 6 offers a large 6.67” HD display that is bright and clear. It has 64GB of storage with the option to add more with a memory card (up to 1TB), and 4GB of memory which is more than enough for everyday tasks. The main camera is 50MPs and performs reasonably well in most lighting conditions, and the front camera is 8MP which is suitable for video calls and selfies. The battery life is impressive and lasts up to 46 hours.
The phone works with all major UK networks and includes a GPS location feature for extra peace of mind. The only drawback is the required subscription for the parent controls, which adds an ongoing cost.
ZVOx sOuNdbar
During the festive period there is nothing quite like gathering the family around to enjoy a film together. However, its moments like this in our family that normal trigger an argument over why modern films are so loud these days. Without getting into the nitty gritty this is because most modern films audio is set up for more complex sound systems than what we have at home which can make dialogue quieter.
The Zvox soundbar is designed for people who want clearer dialogue without needing a complicated audio setup. It focuses on making speech easier to understand, which can be a huge help if you often find that voices get lost under background music or sound effects.
The AccuVoice system boosts dialogue so voices stand out more clearly, even at low volume. You can select different levels of voice enhancement, which makes it easy to find a setting that suits how you like to listen. There is also a mode called SuperVoice that goes further by reducing background noise even more. Together, these settings make conversations on screen noticeably sharper and easier to follow.
The soundbar also includes an Output Leveling function. This smooths out sudden jumps in volume, so loud adverts or dramatic spikes do not blast out unexpectedly. It is a small detail, but it makes watching television a lot more comfortable.
Another feature is PhaseCue virtual surround sound, which aims to create a wider sense of space without needing multiple speakers. While it does not replace a full home cinema system, it does help the sound feel less flat and more open.
In terms of design, the Zvox soundbar is compact and tidy, making it ideal for smaller rooms or simple setups. It connects through optical or analogue inputs, and the remote control is straightforward with clear buttons that are easy to use.
The main limitation is that bass performance is modest. The focus is on speech, and when the dialogue modes are set high the overall sound can feel a little narrow. There is also no HDMI input, which some users may miss. Overall, the Zvox soundbar is an excellent choice for anyone who values clear dialogue above all else and wants a simple, effective upgrade to everyday television sound.

In everyday use the base layer performs well. It is warm enough for crisp mornings or evenings and light enough to

Is there any Christmas gift more traditional than a lovely snuggly jumper? We don’t think so and they really don’t get much softer than the BAM Chuck On Crew Neck Knit. This jumper comes in a beautiful gift box, saving you at least one job in December. The first thing you notice is that it feels like a high-quality piece, with a soft finish that is comfortable to wear from the first outing. The wool is certified by the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS), it offers warmth without itchiness and has a reassuring focus on sustainability.
The design sits neatly on the hip and has a relaxed fit that avoids looking baggy. There are deep ribs on the hem and cuffs which help the jumper keep its shape, and small side splits that let it move comfortably with you whether you are heading out for a walk or sitting at home. The crew neck style is classic and easy to pair with many outfits, making it useful for everyday wear. In daily use it is

I was a bit sceptical when I got my first cork yoga mat, I didn’t believe it would be grippy enough compared to synthetic materials, however I was pleasantly surprised. The Non Slip Yoga Mat from Yoga Props is a reliable choice for anyone looking for a stable and grippy surface for their practice. It measures 183 cm by 61 cm, which gives you plenty of space to stretch, flow or hold steady poses.
The top surface is made from cork and designed to be non-slip, keeping your hands and feet secure even when you are sweating. The great thing about cork is that the sweatier and warmer you get the more grip it provides. This gives you confidence when doing poses like downward dog or sequences that involve quick transitions, where slipping could be distracting.
Comfort is well balanced. The mat is soft enough to protect your knees and elbows, but firm enough that you still feel grounded in standing and balancing poses. However, if you are used to mats with more cushioning this might take a little getting used to or you may need to double the mat up for added comfort on some long holds.

The Brinno TLC2020 is one of those cameras that immediately sparks curiosity. It is small enough to sit anywhere, yet it is designed for long running projects rather than quick snaps. Once you start using it, you realise how many moments can be captured in a way that normal video simply cannot manage.
The TLC2020 is very compact and light (60 x 70.6 x 42.4 mm/ 87.5 g), which makes it simple to place on shelves, desks or tripods. It runs on four AA batteries, and with the right settings it can keep going for a surprisingly long time. Anyone who wants uninterrupted power can also connect it through USB C, which makes it suitable for indoor or long-term recording.
Brinno has included several shooting modes, each aimed at a different style of project. Time Lapse mode handles regular interval capture and builds the finished video for you at the end. Step Video creates short clips at set intervals and blends them into a smoother sequence. Stop Motion gives full control, letting you press the button for every single frame. The camera can also take still images in the usual way.
In terms of picture quality, the TLC2020 benefits from an HDR sensor and full HD output, which improves scenes with mixed lighting. The lens has a 118° wide field of view, so you can cover large areas without fuss. A clear two inch TFT LCD display on the back makes it easy to check angles and change settings, and a microSD card slot supports storage up to 128 GB.
There are limits worth noting. The camera is not protected against bad weather without an extra case, and many people would prefer a built-in rechargeable battery rather than relying on AAs.
Even with those points in mind, the TLC2020 is a straightforward and enjoyable time lapse camera. It produces pleasing results, is simple to set up and suits creative users as much as it does practical long term projects.

The Technics AZ40M2 earbuds are a beautiful set of earbuds designed for everyday listening but with the focus on clarity and thoughtful features. They arrive in a compact case with a smooth finish and the buds themselves are very light, which makes them easy to wear for long sessions without any pressure on the ears. The design is simple and neat, and the fit feels secure even when walking or bouncing around (I would say exercise, but this is the extent of my physical activity right now).
Sound quality is where these earbuds stand out. They use 6mm drivers supported by an acoustic control chamber which helps to deliver clear vocals and a balanced sound across the range. They are compatible with LDAC high-res wireless audio and the music feels open and detailed with a natural depth that works well for many styles. Bass is present but not overpowering so these are well suited to listeners who prefer accuracy over heavy low end.
The AZ40M2 includes active noise cancellation which reduces everyday background sounds on buses, trains or in a busy office. There are two ambient sound modes as well. Natural Ambient brings in the outside world in a gentle way while Attention Mode focuses on voices which is useful when you want to hear announcements or talk to someone without removing the buds.
A major convenience feature is the ability to connect to three devices at once. Switching between a phone, a laptop and a tablet is smooth and makes these earbuds very practical for work and travel. Call quality is also strong thanks to beamforming microphones that help your voice come through cleanly.
Battery life is respectable with about five and a half hours with noise cancellation on and around eighteen hours from the case. We are very familiar with the Wacaco brand and their manual espresso makers, so we were really surprised to see the arrival of their first electric portable espresso maker. Don’t let the term electric put you off, we are not talking about being tethered to the mains, as it comes with a rechargeable battery pack. At 7.4D x 7.4W x 18.1H cm it is small enough to slip into a backpack or keep in a work drawer but still manages to deliver a rich and satisfying shot that feels close to what you would expect from a traditional machine at home. The build quality is solid with a smooth compact shape that feels comfortable in the hand and sturdy enough for travel.
The battery pack tackles the challenge their classic machines faced, which would mean you need to carry hot with you to make the espresso. Whereas this model can heat water on its own! There is no need to carry a separate kettle because the Pixapresso includes an internal heater with a choice of preset temperatures. This makes it ideal for places where you would not normally be able to make good coffee such as on a train journey or during a long walk in the countryside. It uses a powerful internal pump that creates enough pressure (290 PSI/ 20 Bars) for genuine espresso with a noticeable crema on top.
The Pixapresso also gives you choice when it comes to how you make your drink. You can use freshly ground coffee if you want full control over flavour or you can use compatible capsules if you are in a hurry. It can produce different styles including ristretto, espresso, double espresso or a longer lungo drink and there is a pre infusion setting which allows the coffee to bloom before extraction for improved taste. It comes with a basket size of 8g-16g and the water tank holds up to 120ml.
Battery life is reasonable although not endless. You can make five espresso shots from cold water before it needs to be charged again and using preheated water will help the battery last longer. It takes 180 seconds to get the water to the correct temperature.
It is so easy to use with an intuitive touch screen control, cleaning is simple and most parts are easy to rinse and ready to go again.
Overall the Wacaco Pixapresso is a great addition to the portable espresso making family and very practical solution for coffee lovers. The down sides are the battery life is limited, and a full recharge takes 2.5hrs long. Without a manual option on this unit you can’t travel too far until needs a power top up. The coffee as always has an excellent flavour with a beautiful crema on top. The Pixapresso offers good flexibility and impressive convenience, we love that we can final ditch the thermos and heat the water when needed.

We have recently spent a lot of time in lush with our 4-year-old going through a bit of a bath bomb phase. It’s a colourful world of cruelty-free soaps, shampoos and other cosmetics so we were surprised to discover a little bit of tech released by the brand. The Lush Bath Bot is a playful and imaginative little gadget that brings colour, sound and movement to your soak. At first glance it looks like one of the brand’s familiar round bath bombs but inside it holds a small waterproof speaker and a gentle light display that floats on the water. It feels like a mix of a bath bomb and a smart speaker, but there is an extra sprinkling of magic in the app.
It has downward, outward and top LED lighting for full-spectrum colour. There is also an inbuilt fully water-resistant speaker for 180° immersive sound which gives a surprisingly warm and clear sound for something so dinky. It can play tracks through Bluetooth from your phone, or you can choose from different experiences through the Lush app which lets you pick sounds that match your mood and your bath bomb.
The Bath Bot charges on a simple wireless dock and feels solid and well made. It is designed to be long lasting with parts that can be repaired rather than replaced which is a welcome step for a device of this kind. It can also be returned to the store to be recycled at the end of its life. It is really lovely to add a new dimension to a relaxing soak; the kids love it too but treat it more like a disco than a moment of calm.
It is not perfect however, the controls on the device are quite firm so it is easier to use your phone to adjust settings, this does mean bringing your phone into a bathroom which isn’t always a good idea. The price is also noticeably high for what it delivers which may put some people off.
Having said that the Bath Bot is a delightful way to elevate a quiet moment and bring a little extra magic to the end of a long day.
