SPRING 2012! MISSION STATEMENT

OUR CUSTOMER SERVICE PLEDGE

The mission of the Hoffman Estates Park District is to enhance the quality of life of our residents and guests by providing first class parks, facilities, programs and services through environmentally and fiscally responsible management practices.

Our satisfaction guarantee is our promise to provide quality parks, facilities, recreation programs and leisure services that meet the expectation of our customers. If you are not satisfied with any recreational program the HEPD provides due to the quality of instruction, the child’s inability to adapt emotionally to the class, or the inappropriate skill level for the registered participant, a full refund will be processed. To determine that a class does not meet their satisfaction, participants must attend the first two class sessions, but request a refund and fill out all appropriate paperwork before the third class meeting. Refund request forms are available at the Triphahn Center, Willow Recreation Center and Prairie Stone Sports & Wellness Center. No processing fee will apply to refunds issued under the satisfaction guarantee policy. If you are not satisfied, we would appreciate your comments, suggestions, or ideas for improvement. Please look for our customer comment cards at all district facilities. We appreciate hearing your positive comments, as well as your suggestions for improvement.

OUR COMMUNITY COMMITMENT The Hoffman Estates Park District remains committed to providing the best recreation and leisure services to our community. With our “satisfaction guaranteed” pledge, residents and their guests can be assured that the Hoffman Estates Park District staff will work to not only meet expectations but surpass them.

EXEC. DIRECTOR

And finally, I’d like to personally thank the many volunteers who make our sports programs possible. Without our dedicated parents and others who give back to our community by serving as coaches and team coordinators, thousands of kids in our area would not have access to sports programs. Research has shown that kids gain self-confidence, healthy fitness habits and teamwork skills from organized sports programs. Our volunteers provide a great service that benefits our entire community.

PRESIDENT

We’re proud to be celebrating our first Spring golf season at the newly renovated Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club. Take some time to visit Bridges; you know the course, the changes will amaze you. One of the changes we made was the construction of a beautiful outdoor event area including a gazebo, flower gardens and waterfall. It makes the perfect back drop for special events.

Board Meetings are held monthly at 7:00P at Triphahn Center and Ice Arena.

TREASURER

New in the Program Guide this year, you’ll find Recreation Education; educational information that can provide insight to the benefits of the many programs we offer. And be sure to find the new Calendar of Events, ready to cut out and post on your fridge so you won’t miss a thing this Spring.

The governing body of the park district is comprised of seven elected commissioners who represent the recreational needs of their community for four year, unpaid terms. Park commissioners have the power to levy taxes within prescribed limits, establish or change park district policies, sign agreements, award contracts and possess all of the powers similar to those of a board of directors for a public corporation. Park commissioners work as a board to interpret the park and recreation needs of the community, formulate short and long term plans and inform the public of the purpose, worth and extent of the district’s services, parks and facilities.

COMMISSIONER

Happy New Year from your friends at the Hoffman Estates Park District. We hope the year 2012 brings you and your family an abundance of health and wellness. The Park District offers numerous opportunities that can help you achieve and maintain your health and wellness goals, which you can find here in the Spring 2012 edition of our Program Guide.

HOCKEY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM Program Supervisor Randy Jordan, 847-285-5501, rjordan@heparks.org

The Hockey Development Program encompasses three categories designed to take the new player from the learning to stand up on skates to, over time, being able to play on a competitive team. We offer two days a week for a very competitive price believing that skating is one of the most difficult sport exercises to learn and master and needs frequent practice to really begin to enjoy and progress. However, have to miss a day, no problem! Curriculum is designed to enable students to progress at their own speed. It is always recommended to have a child try a public skate first to ensure they are ready to focus on the process of learning to skate. Contact Randy Jordan, Assistant GM/Hockey Director, for more information on these excellent classes at 847–285–5501 or rjordan@heparks.org.

Young Starter Development

Hockey Development (5–15 years)

(3–8 years)

This two day a week program is to essentially get the new skater familiarized with getting up and down on skates. Learning to work edges by marching, gliding etc. up to the beginning of striding for skating. Much time is given to doing drills that encourage free movement and motion that teaches skills while children are having fun and are unaware they actually learning. Bike helmet and ski gloves (or similar) required. This is a skating only class. Plastic sticks may be introduced at the end of the session. M,F 4/6-6/1

This very successful two day a week program is ideal for athletes with minimal experience on skates and those younger that have progressed from the starter program. Although the focus in this program is to learn to execute the important Sumo elements of skating, it also includes training in stick work and small games etc. The goal is to prepare players to advance to adding the 3 on 3 Sunday House League games to the next stage of progression. Equipment is available up to certain sizes. TU 4:30P–5:30P 4/7-6/2

Your Recreation Education

W hy play tennis?

Here are few good reasons, from

the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA). Read more at uspta.com.

#1.

Cut your risk of death in half from any cause if you participate in tennis 3 hours per week at a moderately vigorous intensity! This is according to the late Dr. Ralph Paffenbarger, an internationally recognized exercise authority who studied more than 10,000 people for 20 years.

#2

Tennis increases your vigor, optimism and self-esteem while lowering depression, anger, confusion, anxiety and tension than other athletes and non-athletes, according to a study conducted at Southern Connecticut State University by Dr. Joan Finn and colleagues.

#3

University of Illinois scientists found that tennis may generate new connections in your brain because of all the alertness and tactical thinking required. Researchers suggest it may promote a lifetime of continuing development of the brain!

#4

It blasts calories! Competitive tennis burns more calories than aerobics or cycling, according to studies in caloric expenditures reported by USPTA.

Your Recreation Education Fact: Children need 60 minutes of physical activity each day to stay healthy. Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, and today, nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese. If we don’t solve this problem, one third of all children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives. Many others will face chronic obesityrelated health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and asthma. “The physical and emotional health of an entire generation and the economic health and security of our nation is at stake.” - First Lady Michelle Obama at the Let’s Move! launch on February 9, 2010

Golf Outings

1400 Poplar Creek Drive

847–884–0219

Formerly Poplar Creek Country Club and now Bridges at Poplar Creek Country Club, the name change is derived from several sources. As part of a multi-million-dollar enhancement project that began in 2010, installation of eight, environmentally-friendly wood bridges lends even greater aesthetics to golfers' journeys. Adding "bridges" to the club name also stresses the importance of these bridges taking golfers over critical flood-plain areas allowing the course to remain open even after heavy rains. Not to outdone, the new bridges add a golfhistory lesson to golfers' rounds. Four bridges are adorned with plaques of famous amateur golfers Bobby Janes, Chick Evans, Samuel Ryder and Babe Zaharias. Playing tribute to these legends' significant contributions to the game "bridges" the gap between the club's storied past, present and future. As a public facility, bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club feels strongly about the amateur heritage and future of the great game of golf. Generations to come will also enjoy recent enhancements, including 15 renovated golf holes, a vastly expanded golf learning center, a major clubhouse renovation and a new, majestic, outdoor events area with waterfall and pavilion. Consider Personal Training

Personal training is a great way to accelerate your fitness goals whether you’ve been on your fitness journey for a long time or just getting started. There are many benefits to use a personal trainer, consider these! Customized Plan. Your personal trainer will discuss your goals and assess your fitness level to develop an individualized program to help you meet your goals. This will maximize your time and help you stay within your limits so you don’t overdo it. Education. You’ll learn which exercises target which muscles in your body and how to do these exercises with the proper form, ensuring the maximum results from your efforts and allowing you to work out on your own. Accountability. In addition to the money you’ve invested, you’re also investing time and your trainer will help to ensure you are consistent with your workouts. It’s harder to skip a session when someone is waiting for you at the gym! Help with Specific Health Issues, Injuries, and Conditions. First, consult with your doctor regarding exercising with health conditions. A trainer can help you ensure a safe, effective workout to keep you healthy and fit. Challenge Yourself. It’s harder to slack off on your workout when a trainer is there to motivate you and push you past your self-imposed limits. You might discover that you’re stronger than you realize! Bust Out of a Plateau. Everyone reaches a plateau at some point in their fitness journey. A trainer can suggest changes that can help you bust through that plateau. Boost Performance for a Special Event. A trainer can map out a training plan for a 5K, golf tournament, bike race, etc. Beat Boredom. A trainer provides new perspectives and new workouts with new equipment. Personal Training sessions can be scheduled at your convenience at Prairie Stone Sports and Wellness Center, Willow Recreation Fitness Center and Triphahn Fitness Center. Recruit a friend or two and schedule group personal training for extra motivation, an added social element and a fee discount too. Learn more about Personal Training at heparks.org.

Inclusion assistance is provided by NWSRA to those individuals who wish to participate in their home park district program. When registering, the parent of an individual with a disability should inform the park district (and NWSRA, if desired) of any accommodation needed in order for the individual to successfully participate in the program. The park district staff will then contact NWSRA for assistance with the accommodation. Special Leisure Services Foundation, the fundraising arm of NWSRA, partners with public and private corporations, foundations and individuals to support and promote outstanding recreational opportunities for children and adults with disabilities. Throughout the year, the organization hosts a variety of fundraising events that help support accessible transportation, general programs, inclusion opportunities, the Kevin T. Kendrigan Memorial Scholarship program and NWSRA Lightning Athletes.
