Spring 2011 Letter from the President

Dear Friends of the Hoffman Estates Park District, As we enter the New Year we can look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead. You may have made New Year’s resolutions that included improving your health and general quality of life. If you haven’t started to implement those resolutions, the opportunities that we offer will provide you with the means to accomplish your goals. You will find everything from fitness classes to art and music classes, sports opportunities to dance classes, early childhood experiences to our 50+ active adult programs.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Hoffman Estates Park District is to enhance the quality of life of our residents and guests by providing first class parks, facilities, programs and services through environmentally and fiscally responsible management practices.

Our Customer Service Pledge

Our satisfaction guarantee is our promise to provide quality parks, facilities, recreation programs and leisure services that meet the expectation of our customers. If you are not satisfied with any recreational program the HEPD provides due to the quality of instruction, the child’s inability to adapt emotionally to the class, or the inappropriate skill level for the registered participant, a full refund will be processed. To determine that a class does not meet their satisfaction, participants must attend the first two class sessions, but request a refund and fill out all appropriate paperwork before the third class meeting. Refund request forms are available at the Triphahn Center, Willow Recreation Center and Prairie Stone Sports & Wellness Center. No processing fee will apply to refunds issued under the satisfaction guarantee policy. If you are not satisfied, we would appreciate your comments, suggestions, or ideas for improvement. Please look for our customer comment cards at all district facilities. We appreciate hearing your positive comments, as well as your suggestions for improvement.

Our Community Commitment

The Hoffman Estates Park District remains committed to providing the best recreation and leisure services to our community. With our "satisfaction guaranteed" pledge, residents and their guests can be assured that the Hoffman Estates Park District staff will work to not only meet expectations but surpass them.

Take some time to flip through our summer planner which is filled with information on our upcoming summer camps and programs. In this guide you will also find a coupon for the Seascape Family Aquatic Center Early Bird Discount. This is a perfect opportunity to save 15% on your summer of fun. In December of 2010, the park district and community experienced a terrible loss. Our long time friend and Park District Commissioner Scott R. Triphahn passed away after a two year battle with cancer. It was because of his vision and energy that the park district moved forward and grew to become recognized nationally as a Gold Medal Park District. Please take an opportunity to read about Scotts accomplishments in this guide. Scott will be sorely missed. His legacy will live on in the newly dedicated Scott R. Triphahn Community Center and Ice Arena. Don’t forget to visit us online at www.heparks.org to keep informed of all the wonderful opportunities awaiting you and your family. I hope that all of our friends have a wonderful spring and that all of your New Year’s Resolutions are fulfilled.

Park Board of Commissioners

The governing body of the park district is comprised of seven elected commissioners who represent the recreational needs of their community for four year, unpaid terms Park commissioners have the power to levy taxes within prescribed limits, establish or change park district policies, sign agreements, award contracts and possess all of the powers similar to those of a board of directors for a public corporation. Park commissioners work as a board to interpret the park and recreation needs of the community, formulate short and long term plans and inform the public of the purpose, worth and extent of the district’s services, parks and facilities. Scott R. Triphahn Community Center & Ice Arena

On December 11, 2010, a public dedication ceremony took place at the Community Center & Ice Arena to formally rename the facility the Scott R. Triphahn Community Center & Ice Arena. Scott R. Triphahn exemplified what it means to be a Park Board Commissioner. Through hard work, selfless efforts, dedication and a true desire to enhance the quality of life in his community, Scott helped to strengthen the park district’s mission and left a lasting contribution to his park district and community. Scott Triphahn passed away on December 21, 2010 at the age of 53 from a battle with stomach cancer. Scott R. Triphahn was a park board commissioner, founding president of the Friends of HE Parks Foundation, lifelong resident and steadfast pillar of the Hoffman Estates community. His selfless dedication to the Hoffman Estates Park District and his regard, passion and love for parks and recreation were of the highest caliber. His kind heart and contagious energy left an indelible impression on all fortunate enough to have been touched by his enthusiastic spirit. His tireless efforts will resonate in the laughter of children and will radiate on the smiling faces of Hoffman Estates residents for generations to come.

Rest in Peace Scott. Thanks for setting the bar so high and taking us along for the ride.

Residents of Chicago’s northwest suburbs will soon have access to comprehensive pediatric care in their own backyard. Alexian Brothers Hospital Network recently announced plans to construct the new Alexian Brothers Children’s Hospital in Hoffman Estates on the campus of St. Alexius Medical Center. The Children’s Hospital at St. Alexius Medical Center will allow local access to a full range of care for pediatric patients, their parents, siblings and support network. Construction is set to begin this spring on the $117 million, six-story Alexian Brothers Children’s Hospital. Expected to open by 2013, it will be built as an addition to the southeast corner of the medical center and will offer a convenient, centralized location for many of Alexian Brothers Hospital Network’s existing pediatric services, which rank among the best in the region in terms of scope and quality. Alexian Brothers Children’s Hospital will serve as a regional hub for pediatric care, supported by Alexian Brothers team of highly trained pediatric specialists and sub-specialists, neonatologists, pediatric nurses and pediatric surgeons. “It will allow us to coordinate specialty physician care with ancillary services, and to provide individualized treatment for children,” says Ed Goldberg, St. Alexius President and Chief Executive Officer. Alexian Brothers currently offers a full range of specialized pediatric care provided by more than 60 physicians in 21 pediatric sub-specialties, such as anesthesiology, cardiology, endocrinology, neonatology, neurology, pulmonology, radiology, urology, and neurosurgery. The need for specialized pediatric services in the northwest suburbs is increasing due to population growth and health care demands. The Children’s Hospital will offer flexible visiting hours, convenient meal options, private spaces and a comfortable environment for our families, and will feature pediatric-friendly surgery areas, with a dedicated pediatric entrance, pre-op and recovery space and a new pediatric intensive care unit. “Alexian Brothers Children’s Hospital will bring much-needed, high-quality pediatric care for children close to their homes, their families and support systems,” said Goldberg. “By building a facility that will care for critically ill children closer to their families here in the northwest suburbs, we are filling an important need.” For more information on the new Alexian Brothers Children’s Hospital, visit: www.MyAlexianKids.net

Bridges of Poplar Creek County Club

New and improved golf course open for play this spring. 1400 Poplar Creek Drive 847–884–0219 www.bridgesofpoplarcreek.com Poplar Creek Country Club has changed its name to Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club after a major enhancement project. Renovation to 15 holes and installation of eight, new wood bridges traversing our muscular 18-hole, public access golf course are extremely impressive. Converging the new Poplar Creek’s "now" with its storied history, plaques of Bobby Jones, Chick Evans, Samuel Ryder and Babe Zaharias will reside alongside bridges noting their significant contributions to the game. The course will open and be in pristine condition with all grow-in slated for completion in June 2011. Nine holes will be available for play immediately this spring. Floods which once plagued fairways after heavy rains will no longer occur. The addition of multiple tee boxes gives Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club renewed appeal to better golfers seeking added length and to new golfers seeking shorter distances. Re-configured fairways and bunkers add to enjoyable, first-class experiences. Fescue is omnipresent on many holes providing depth and definition and new lakes make for even more challenging but fair land water hazards.

Level 2 Swim

With the help of their parents, tots become comfortable in and around the water so they are ready to learn to swim. Children will enjoy songs and games while becoming familiar in the water. Hockey Development Programs 3–15 years – Ice Arena

Learn to play the greatest and most invigorating game on earth in an economical way designed to systematically give new players the tools to move into competitive hockey. Although hockey can be one of the most challenging sports in the beginning stages, mainly due to the need to learn to skate, the very successful "SUMO" system of training has players often progressing faster to really enjoy playing the game. Mastering the 5 major skills in a step-by-step manner gives a dedicated player a sound foundation by the time he/she is encouraged to move to the next level. Depending on age, there are three steps to progressing into playing Wolf Pack team hockey. The starter and development programs offer 2 days a week. Miss a date, no problem... the ice plan and curriculum are designed to progress players at their own speed. You don’t need to have equipment to enroll in these programs, you can use our equipment for free. Return the equipment once you complete the session or purchase your own. Players not returning the equipment will be invoiced for the cost. Contact Randy Jordan, Assistant GM/Hockey Director, for more information on these excellent classes at 847–285–5501 or rjordan@heparks.org.

These are some of the most popular beginner to advanced introductory lessons in the country. Ideal for children that have had some skating experience and all new players 8+ years. Focus is on learning perfect skating mechanics and applying those to the other 4 major skills (stick handling, passing, shooting and safe checking) and small games. Players primarily work in stations designed to fit the experience and progression level of the player.

This cross ice games program is the perfect stepping stone to full ice competitive team play. Approved players from the development program will be encouraged to complete this game training process before embarking on full ice competitive play. Mini teams playing in a smaller area allows for more puck touches, shots, movement and reaction in traffic, skating edge work and competitive challenge with full engagement by all. Once performing with confidence at this level, at the coaches recommendation, players will be encouraged progress to full ice competitive team play.

Renovation to 15 holes, installation of eight, new wood bridges, multiple tee box additions, new lakes, re-conÿ gured fairways and bunkers and a gorgeous outdoor event pavilion grace the presence of this new and improved public golf course. Converging the new Poplar Creek’s “now” with its storied history, plaques of Bobby Jones, Chick Evans, Samuel Ryder and Babe Zaharias will reside alongside bridges noting their signiÿ cant contributions to the game. The Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club will open and be in pristine condition with all grow-in slated for completion in June 2011. Nine holes will be available for play immediately this spring.

You know the course, but the changes will amaze you. See page 7-9 for more details on the Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club.
