Our Community Commitment The Hoffman Estates Park District remains committed to providing the best recreation and leisure services to our community. With our Satisfaction Guaranteed pledge, residents and their guests can be assured that the Hoffman Estates Park District staff will work to not only meet expectations, but to exceed them.

Our Mission Offer healthy and enjoyable experiences to residents and guests by providing first class parks, facilities, programs and services in an environmentally and fiscally responsible manner.

Our Vision By adhering to our values and achieving our goals, enrich the quality of life of all residents and our guests by providing healthy and enjoyable experiences in an environmentally and fiscally responsible manner.

Our Goals • • • •

Promote healthy and enjoyable experiences for all people. Deliver financial stewardship. Achieve operational excellence and environmental awareness. Promote quality leadership and service.

The Hoffman Estates Park District is governed by seven elected commissioners, representing the recreational needs of the community for four year unpaid terms. Park Commissioners have the power to levy taxes within prescribed limits, establish or change Park District policies, sign agreements, award contracts and possess all of the powers similar to those of a board of directors for a public corporation. The Park Board also hires an Executive Director to manage the day-to-day affairs of the Park District. The Executive Director hires professional staff to assist in managing operations. The Executive Director also works to keep the board of commissioners informed of the happenings within the Hoffman Estates Park District.

Contact our Board of Commissioners To email a Commissioner, click on the name by their picture at heparks.org or you can call 847-781-3633.

Board Meetings

Board Meetings are held on the 4th Tuesday each month at 7:00PM at Triphahn. Visit heparks.org to view our schedule, agendas and minutes.

As the months get colder and the days grow shorter, many opportunities are available for you and your loved ones to stay healthy and active at your Park District. Don’t let ol’ man Winter stop you from enjoying all the Park District offers in our beautiful parks, fabulous facilities and fun programs. It’s important to stay active year round, and we have a few suggestions for you: Prairie Stone™ Sports & Wellness Center (PSS&WC) – For the full service health club experience, PSS&WC is second to none. About the Park District

Board of Commissioners

"Hello, we are the Bickham family: Mike, Heidi, Ashley & AJ and have been involved with HEPD ever since moving to Hoffman Estates in 2001. Our children have grown up with and are direct products of HEPD. From swimming to skating, t-ball to theater. From Brunch with the Easter bunny to Breakfast with Santa. They've taken lessons in dance, golf, swimming and tennis. Mix in a few Bo’s Run Dog Park visits with our dog Lincoln and there’s been plenty to enjoy!"

" I’ve been with the Park District since 2008. We try to meet most of the needs that the 50+ community has. We have activities that cover three categories: trips, exercise and organized play (cards and games, pickleball, etc). What I like the most about my job is seeing the excitement when the new brochure comes out. That’s why we’re here, to provide the activities that are going to help people not only enjoy themselves but also have a lot of camaraderie and fellowship. "

Young Rembrandts Combo Drawing

This winter season is the perfect time to enroll your student into a Young Rembrandts combo drawing class where we will alternate between traditional drawing subjects and cartoon drawing. Students will advance their techniques when using color pencil, marker and Sharpie. A Lego inspired mini-fig face drawing, a historical based drawing will document the Op art movement and a composition featuring a detailed scorpion will provide plenty of fun, artistic challenges. Young Rembrandts students will emulate master artist Pablo Picasso, complete a portrait of Canadian athlete Terry Fox and spend plenty of time being silly with a funny pterodactyl character drawing. During the lessons emphasizing cartooning skills our students will learn to draw cartoon faces and exaggerate facial features as they explore the humorous sides of kids and parents. They will also learn to incorporate sound effects into art, taking any masterpiece to a new level of excitement. Personifying ordinary animals, transforming them into cartoon characters and telling jokes on paper will be the focus of many of our lessons, like in our stylish dogs, wild monkeys and funny bunnies. " My name is Janeen Volkman. I am a dance instructor at the Triphahn Center. This will be my 15th year teaching dance at HEPD. Although over the years I have taught all ages, levels and styles, currently I am exclusively teaching our Hoffman Stars Dance Company. I have always had a love for children and teaching. It brings me so much joy to share my love of dance with young children. But my journey began more than 15 years ago...I actually grew up dancing through the Park District from the age of 4. Judy Walczak, who is still teaching at Willow Recreation Center, was my instructor for 14 years! The dance program, under her direction, instilled in me a love for dance and the desire to teach. Thank you Ms. Judy! It’s crazy how time flies...the HEPD has been a part of my life for 28 years! "

"Hi! I began teaching preschool for the Hoffman Estates Park District more than 25 years ago. I teach at Willow Recreation Center. I totally enjoy what I do I am proud of what we have accomplished and glad that I teach here. There is a nice sense of community. We have raised three sons here in Hoffman Estates. We have been involved in the many programs the Park District provides as they were growing up. The fact that the Park District has strived to be the best, thus earning a National Gold Medal from the National Recreation & Parks Association, makes me happy to be a part of the HEPD."

Friends of HE Parks is the charitable arm of the Hoffman Estates Park District. The foundation was created to enhance the quality of life for all community members by helping provide the best in parks, facilities and recreational opportunities. All donations to the Foundation are tax deductible as defined by Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Donations or in-kind gifts may be contributed for specific purposes, or may be unrestricted to provide assistance where most needed.

Who Are We? It is in the best interest of our whole community to encourage a healthy lifestyle for all. The Friends of HE Parks Foundation is a dedicated group of community volunteers who raise money so that more residents can participate in and enjoy recreational opportunities, regardless of their social, physical or economic circumstances and limitations. Studies have shown that physical activity and recreation are imperative to maintaining health. It is the mission of the Hoffman Estates Park District and the Foundation to promote the health and well-being of residents through first class facilities and programs.

What Do We Do? The Friends of HE Parks Scholarship Fund seeks to strengthen community and family ties by providing a funding source to finance recreational scholarships to the disadvantaged in the Hoffman Estates community, while also funding special recreation projects. The recreational scholarships help families facing financial hardships with an opportunity to enjoy the same recreational and leisure opportunities as their neighbors. The Friends of HE Parks Scholarship Fund also helps fund needed community programs that enhance the physical, recreational, educational and cultural life for Hoffman Estates residents, wheelchair accessible school bus for summer camp and community field trips, jumbo movie screen for free family movie nights.

Donate Today! The Friends of HE Parks accepts contributions or bequests in the form of land, property, cash and in-kind gifts. An individual may wish to restrict the gift for a specific purpose or may wish to simply make a tax deductible donation to the Foundation's general fund. *All donations to the Friends of HE Parks are tax deductible as defined by Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

"Hi! My name is Michele Williams. One of the things I love about living in Hoffman Estates is the Park District! The Park District has fostered so many wonderful family memories like Easter Egg Hunts, time at the many playgrounds, skate parks and pool. I have utilized the programs and have been a member of PSS&WC for three years. I made so many friends at the club, working out became something I looked forward to. My Personal Trainer, Joe Bagnasco, has worked with me for six months. In that time I have increased my strength and stamina to levels I never thought possible. Everyone I have come in contact with at the club, from the greeting at the front desk to the instructors and management, have made PSSWC and the Park District a special place to be."

Figure skating is a technical sport with many intricate moves and elements that can take several weeks or months to achieve. Coaches provide the critical instruction needed to achieve the proper technique and desired look of the element, instant feedback and critique and training needed to learn new elements. Skaters learning the basics in classes will receive group instruction and will learn the breakdown and beginning steps to how an element like forward skating should be performed. In group lessons the instructor’s goal is for skaters to be able to accomplish the elements learned with minimal mistakes. Private lessons allow the skater even more in depth critique and mastery of the element. You may contact Jennifer Dooley, Figure Skating Manager, at 847-781-3642, or via email jdooley@ heparks.org for a coach referral or information on private lessons. Once you choose a coach, they will walk you through the process of contract ice and times they are available to teach. Most lessons take place after school until 5:30pm or before school.

With its varied topography, open forests and expansive wetland, Black Bear Park provides for a unique disc golf experience unlike any other in the Chicagoland area. This challenging 18 hole course is open for play. The course allows participants the ability to experience the parks natural features in a challenging and fun way. Some of the holes were intentionally designed to play across and through the wet areas of the park, while other holes play through a 100+ year old hardwood lot.

" We have been spoiled for over 25 years by the Park District. It’s hard to decide which park is my favorite. It could be Huntington Park, Olmstead Park, Charlemagne Park, South Ridge Park, or Pine Park. If for no other reason than the view out the back of our house,my favorite park is in our back yard - Westbury Park! Westbury Lake offers nice neighbors with great fishing, fantastic views and walking trails, not to mention a great place to run a race competitive radio controlled boat. Winter in Westbury Park takes on its own beauty! We would like to thank the entire Park District team for their efforts delivering award winning programs. And, particular appreciation for our outstanding playgrounds and park facilities".

"I’ve been coaching for four years. We won championships for the first three years that I coached. The first 2 years we were the Cardinals and the third we were the Angels. I’ve been playing since I was 3 years old and I stopped playing about 3 years ago. Winning a championship is such happiness! Seeing the kids happy, it brings me joy that I was able to impact them and pass my knowledge on to them, I think that’s my greatest achievement. I love baseball because I love just being outside, I’m more of an outdoor person, it’s what I love, being in the sun, getting dirty and not having your parents yelling at you! "

"My name is Joe DeMaria, I’m a lifeguard at Seascape in Hoffman Estates and this is my third summer here. I’ve always been interested in swimming and I used to come to Seascape as a kid. My brother was a lifeguard and I’ve kind of followed in his footsteps. I enjoy being a lifeguard because of the extra responsibility it gives me. I also enjoy my co-workers and the Seascape management staff. It’s a pretty great job. It’s never the same old same old, and it’s nice having responsibility and knowing that your job is important. It’s very self-motivating and self-rewarding knowing you have a job where people and little kids look up to you. They come here and look up to you and think of you as a good person. It’s just nice."

HEPD Cares About Your Child's HEALTH. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity has more than tripled in the United States over the last 30 years. It has contributed to an increase in chronic diseases like high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes, once only seen in adults. To address this serious issue, the HEALTH Program, a District wide childhood obesity initiative, provides the community with a variety of excellent tools and resources to combat this critical issue. HEALTH stands for “Helping Everyone Achieve A Lifestyle that’s Healthy” and represents our efforts to reduce the rate of childhood obesity in our community. Wherever you see the apple, you’ll find health tips and programs that encourage a healthy lifestyle for all. You can join HEPD in our fight against childhood obesity. One way is to purchase or renew a Park District Youth License Plate for your vehicle! With every license plate purchased or renewed, $25 is contributed to a grant fund to support programming for kids.

Email Communication

The Hoffman Estates Park District staff has made every effort to prepare our marketing material as accurately as possible, however, errors can occur. Circumstances may require that adjustments be made to programs, fees, schedules, ect. The Park District reserves the right to make any such adjustments. The Hoffman Estates Park District apologizes for any inconvenience these errors may cause.

At HEPD, we value the philosophy that our parks and recreation programs are for all people – regardless of the color of their skin, age, income level or ability. It’s important that all people have access to parks, programs and facilities that enrich their lives and add value to the community. Where you see this icon, you’ll see programs, organizations and efforts that demonstrate that value.

Natural Area Management Plan

Early in 2010, the HEPD Board of Commissioners formally adopted the district's first Natural Area Management Plan. We've changed the shorelines of our lakes by adding natural plant vegetation, called a natural shoreline. Natural shorelines, as opposed to rock borders or retaining wall shorelines, offer many benefits to the community. Natural shorelines add beauty to the landscape. They help reduce excessive growth of algae by protecting the water quality because they prevent the soil from eroding into the lake. Natural shorelines also keep litter from blowing into the lakes. The plants attract a great variety of wildlife such as birds, butterflies, frogs, turtles, and ducks which use the area for nesting, spawning and protection from predators. In addition, the vegetation deters nuisance species like Canadian geese which litter the lake and surrounding area with droppings. Further, by improving water quality and appearance, increasing wildlife habitat, a natural shoreline may even improve property values. For more information on the Park District’s green initiatives and natural area management, visit heparks.org. Natural Area Management in Action! Sportsmanship Pledge

Our Recreation Department has adopted a special pledge in an effort to build confidence and sportsmanship in all our young athletes and to ensure a healthy enriching environment, the Hoffman Estates Park District has developed the “My Game, Your Game, Our Game” youth sportsmanship pledge to solidify our dedication to the health and well-being of our community. My game = I will try my hardest to excel at this sport. Your game = I will respect you as a teammate, opponent, parent, referee or coach. Our game = Together we will develop teamwork and sportsmanship.

Anti-Bullying Policy

HEPD cares for the health and well-being of our community and our participants and will not tolerate bullying or harassment of any kind. The Hoffman Estates Park District's Board of Commissioners has approved a comprehensive Anti-Bullying Policy to address bullying or harassment, and all forms of aggressive and violent behaviors. “We feel this is an important step to ensure the health and well-being of our community and our participants,” said Dean Bostrom, executive director for the HEPD. “We won’t tolerate bullying or harassment of any kind that might inhibit an individual’s ability to learn and participate.”“Bullying” or “harassment” is defined as any gesture or written, verbal, graphic, or physical act (including cyber bullying via the internet, cell phone, personal digital assistant) that is dehumanizing, intimidating, hostile, humiliating, threatening, or otherwise likely to evoke fear of physical harm or emotional distress. This also includes forms of retaliation against individuals who report or cooperate in an investigation under this policy. All employees and volunteers will be required to complete a training course each year and will be expected to refuse to tolerate bullying and harassment and to demonstrate behaviour that is respectful and civil. Visit heparks.org to read our Anti Bullying Policy.

If you see lightning or hear thunder, even if the alarm doesn't sound, potentially dangerous weather is approaching. Clear the area and return 20 minutes after last occurrence.
