Our Community Commitment The Hoffman Estates Park District remains committed to providing the best recreation and leisure services to our community. With our Satisfaction Guaranteed pledge, residents and their guests can be assured that the Hoffman Estates Park District staff will work to not only meet expectations, but to exceed them.

Our Mission Offer healthy and enjoyable experiences to residents and guests by providing first class parks, facilities, programs and services in an environmentally and fiscally responsible manner.

Our Vision By adhering to our values and achieving our goals, enrich the quality of life of all residents and our guests by providing healthy and enjoyable experiences in an environmentally and fiscally responsible manner.

The Hoffman Estates Park District is governed by seven elected commissioners, representing the recreational needs of the community for four year unpaid terms. Park Commissioners have the power to levy taxes within prescribed limits, establish or change Park District policies, sign agreements, award contracts and possess all of the powers similar to those of a board of directors for a public corporation. The Park Board also hires an Executive Director to manage the day-to-day affairs of the Park District. The Executive Director hires professional staff to assist in managing operations. The Executive Director also works to keep the Board of Commissioners informed of the happenings within the Hoffman Estates Park District.

Contact our Board of Commissioners

To email a Commissioner, click on the name by their picture at heparks.org or you can call 847-781-3633.

Board Meetings

Board Meetings are held on the 4th Tuesday each month at 7:00pm at Triphahn. Visit heparks.org to view our schedule, agendas and minutes.

Letter from the President The Summer of 2015 has been great so far, we hope you are taking advantage of everything the Park District has to offer. In this Fall issue, you’ll find many ways to make the most of the beautiful warm weather, and plan ahead to stay active through the Fall. Below are some of the highlights; but these events and programs only scratch the surface! Please take time to browse the Fall Guide; I’m sure you’ll find an intriguing new activity to try: Party in the Park: Don’t miss the biggest event of the year on Saturday, Aug. 8 from 4-10 PM. We will once again have a live band performing in the evening. This year it’s 28 Days playing your favorite tunes. We’ll also have games, activities, performances, petting zoo, pony rides, climbing wall, inflatables and much more. Stop by Fabbrini Park for the fun. See page 3. Live Entertainment: We’re offering something for the whole family this year. Bring your picnic lunch and chairs to Vogelei Park on select Friday mornings at 10 AM in July and August for Friday Fun in the Park children’s entertainment. Enjoy music under the stars on select Wednesday nights for Live Music at Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club where we’ll have a selection of delicious food and beverage specials available. The music doesn’t end there – the Summer Sounds on the Green concert series continues on Thursdays through mid-August. See page 2. Seascape Family Aquatic Center: There are many exciting ways to cool off in the pool as the late summer heat goes on from movie nights, special pool parties and Passholder Appreciation days. In fact, pool passes are now half off. Get your pool pass and enjoy a refreshing swim whenever the whim strikes. See page 42. Halloween Fun: This year our newest event, Pumpkin Fest, is sure to delight young and old with a whimsical pumpkin decorating contest that everyone can take part in. But don’t worry, our popular Trick or Treat Climbing event, Halloween Bash, Pumpkin Swim and Great Pumpkin Skate events are back again for the kids. See page 4-5.

Golf Outings: Tee off at a special golf event this Fall. The Bridges Final Challenge, PRO-AM Challenge and Turkey Shoot are great ways to hit the links and have a chance to win some great prizes. See page 6-7. Fitness Centers: The staff at Prairie Stone Sports & Wellness Center, Triphahn Fitness Center and Willow Fitness Center are ready to help you meet your health and wellness goals. Check out a new group class, or become a member of one of our fitness centers to work toward your goals. Ice Programs: Our hockey and figure skating programs are stronger than ever as more and more people in our community find skating as their passion. It’s never too late to learn to skate! Learn more about our Wolf Pack and Figure Skating Academy programs on page 25-27. Early Childhood: Did you know we offer special enrichment classes for little ones as young as 6 months? From Mom and Tot swimming lessons to music and gymnastics, there are many options for parents to involve their children in stimulating experiences. Be sure to check out our Preschool Program that is Nationally accredited by NAEYC. See pages 16-17. New Programs – Adults, find your next fitness craze – enroll in a Badminton or Ultimate Frisbee league. See pages 33-34. Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts can earn nature badges in our badge programs now available at Vogelei Park, page 32. On behalf of the Park Board of Commissioners, we would also like to take a moment and thank the many volunteers who generously give their time back to the community in so many ways. It is said that “volunteers do not necessarily have the time, they just have the heart.” Without our volunteers we would not be able to provide the level of programming that our community relies on each year. Thank you! Mike Bickham, President Park Board of Commissioners

Watch your mailbox for the Winter Guide from the Hoffman Estates Park District, coming soon. The brochure will be mailed to Hoffman residents November 18-21. 1

Preschool

Our program is state licensed and nationally accredited by the National Association of the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), so you can be confident that your child will benefit from superior educators, classroom equipment and opportunities to help build a solid foundation for his or her future. Our curriculum focuses on hands on activities and experimentation. Activities such as music, movement, dramatic play, science and open ended art projects help cultivate children’s imaginations and give them confidence to express themselves. Group activities encourage socialization and teach important lessons in sharing and being part of a community. Daily outdoor or gym time helps children develop their large motor skills. Fine motor skills are developed through tabletop activities like puzzles cutting and painting, which also fosters imagination and cognitive development.

Private Lessons

Figure skating is a technical sport with many intricate moves and elements that can take several weeks or months to achieve. Coaches provide the critical instruction needed to achieve the proper technique and desired look of the element, instant feedback and critique and training needed to learn new elements. Skaters learning the basics in classes will receive group instruction and will learn the breakdown and beginning steps to how an element like forward skating should be performed. In group lessons the instructor’s goal is for skaters to be able to accomplish the elements learned with minimal mistakes. Private lessons allow the skater even more in depth critique and mastery of the element. You may contact Jennifer Dooley, Figure Skating Manager, at 847-781-3642, or via email jdooley@heparks.org for a coach referral or information on private lessons. Once you choose a coach, they will walk you through the process of contract ice and times they are available to teach. Most lessons take place after school until 5:30pm or before school. Private lessons are performed at the rink during freestyle ice. Freestyle ice is provided during the day to all figure skaters. This is not public ice and skaters taking private lessons or practicing on the ice must adhere to the ice etiquette rules.

Freestyle Skate

This time is for advanced figure skaters and their coaches to practice. To reserve ice, contact the Service Desk at the Triphahn Center Ice Arena.

Sky High Volleyball

"I started playing tennis with my Dad at Prairie Stone and Cannon Crossing Park tennis courts from the age of 7. I had taken my first tennis group lesson at Prairie Stone. Coach Chris Cabanban helped me develop my game and gave me solid foundation. I love the competition and I love just getting out there and hitting tennis balls with my friends and my cousins. HEPD had an impact on my life because it was where I started playing tennis and their great facilities and support inspired me to keep playing at higher level and compete."

Sky High began in 1989 and is regarded as one of the top junior volleyball programs in the nation. Sky High offers regional and junior olympic teams for grades 5th-12th, beach program, summer camps for adults and juniors, private lessons, leagues and tournaments. Over the past several years 96% of the female athletes have continued to compete at the collegiate level on scholarships. For more information, contact Sky High at 815-356-0006 or skyhighvoleyball.org.

(6 months-3 years - PSS&WC)

Swim Level 1

Students become more comfortable in the pool and learn to enjoy the water safely. Students will learn elementary skills such as water entry and front and back floats and begin to learn the arm and leg action of swimming. Class will not meet week of: 11/23-

11/28 (4-9 years - PSS&WC)

We strongly encourage swim participants to attend on the day and time of scheduled lessons. Makeup classes are not available. Refunds will not be issued after the class start date.

Green Initiative

We’re Embracing the “Park” in Park District. Here’s our green mission: To adopt environmentally friendly business practices that benefit the environment, educate the community and improve district wide efficiencies. When you see this symbol, look for tips on how to reduce, reuse and recycle at home. Read more about how the Hoffman Estates Park District works to be green at heparks.org.

HEALTH Initiative

HEPD Cares About Your Child's HEALTH. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity has more than tripled in the United States over the last 30 years. It has contributed to an increase in chronic diseases like high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes, once only seen in adults. To address this serious issue, the HEALTH Program, a District wide childhood obesity initiative, provides the community with a variety of excellent tools and resources to combat this critical issue. HEALTH stands for “Helping Everyone Achieve A Lifestyle that’s Healthy” and represents our efforts to reduce the rate of childhood obesity in our community. Wherever you see the apple, you’ll find health tips and programs that encourage a healthy lifestyle for all. You can join HEPD in our fight against childhood obesity. One way is to purchase or renew a Park District Youth License Plate for your vehicle! With every license plate purchased or renewed, $25 is contributed to a grant fund to support programming for kids.

Email Communication

The Hoffman Estates Park District staff has made every effort to prepare our marketing material as accurately as possible, however, errors can occur. Circumstances may require that adjustments be made to programs, fees, schedules, ect. The Park District reserves the right to make any such adjustments. The Hoffman Estates Park District apologizes for any inconvenience these errors may cause.

At HEPD, we value the philosophy that our parks and recreation programs are for all people – regardless of the color of their skin, age, income level or ability. It’s important that all people have access to parks, programs and facilities that enrich their lives and add value to the community. Where you see this icon, you’ll see programs, organizations and efforts that demonstrate that value.

Natural Area Management Plan

Early in 2010, the HEPD Board of Commissioners formally adopted the district's first Natural Area Management Plan. We've changed the shorelines of our lakes by adding natural plant vegetation, called a natural shoreline. Natural shorelines, as opposed to rock borders or retaining wall shorelines, offer many benefits to the community. Natural shorelines add beauty to the landscape. They help reduce excessive growth of algae by protecting the water quality because they prevent the soil from eroding into the lake. Natural shorelines also keep litter from blowing into the lakes. The plants attract a great variety of wildlife such as birds, butterflies, frogs, turtles, and ducks which use the area for nesting, spawning and protection from predators. In addition, the vegetation deters nuisance species like Canadian geese which litter the lake and surrounding area with droppings. Further, by improving water quality and appearance, increasing wildlife habitat, a natural shoreline may even improve property values. For more information on the Park District’s green initiatives and natural area management, visit heparks.org. Natural Area Management in Action! See the beauty of our natural areas and read the full Natural Area Management Plan at heparks.org.

Sportsmanship Pledge

Our Recreation Department has adopted a special pledge in an effort to build confidence and sportsmanship in all our young athletes and to ensure a healthy enriching environment, the Hoffman Estates Park District has developed the “My Game, Your Game, Our Game” youth sportsmanship pledge to solidify our dedication to the health and well-being of our community. My game = I will try my hardest to excel at this sport. Your game = I will respect you as a teammate, opponent, parent, referee or coach. Our game = Together we will develop teamwork and sportsmanship.

Anti-Bullying Policy

HEPD cares for the health and well-being of our community and our participants and will not tolerate bullying or harassment of any kind. The Hoffman Estates Park District's Board of Commissioners has approved a comprehensive Anti-Bullying Policy to address bullying or harassment, and all forms of aggressive and violent behaviors. “We feel this is an important step to ensure the health and well-being of our community and our participants,” said Dean Bostrom, executive director for the HEPD. “We won’t tolerate bullying or harassment of any kind that might inhibit an individual’s ability to learn and participate.”“Bullying” or “harassment” is defined as any gesture or written, verbal, graphic, or physical act (including cyber bullying via the internet, cell phone, personal digital assistant) that is dehumanizing, intimidating, hostile, humiliating, threatening, or otherwise likely to evoke fear of physical harm or emotional distress. This also includes forms of retaliation against individuals who report or cooperate in an investigation under this policy. All employees and volunteers will be required to complete a training course each year and will be expected to refuse to tolerate bullying and harassment and to demonstrate behaviour that is respectful and civil. Visit heparks.org to read our Anti Bullying Policy.

Northwest Special Recreation Association

The Hoffman Estates Park District is proud to be a member of Northwest Special Recreation Association (NWSRA). Throughout the northwest suburbs, NWSRA is the leader in providing outstanding recreational opportunities for children and adults with disabilities. NWSRA’s team of full-time Therapeutic Recreation professionals and trained part-time staff offer a multitude of year-round program offerings including sports, camping, social programs and much more. Having fun, being included, making friends, learning new things and going new places are just a few of the benefits of NWSRA programs! Inclusion assistance is provided by NWSRA to those individuals who wish to participate in their home Park District program. When registering, the parent of an individual with a disability should inform the park district (and NWSRA, if desired) of any accommodation needed in order for the individual to successfully participate in the program. The Park District staff will then contact NWSRA for assistance with the accommodation. Special Leisure Services Foundation, the fundraising arm of NWSRA, partners with public and private corporations, foundations and individuals to support and promote outstanding recreational opportunities for children and adults with disabilities. Throughout the year, the organization hosts a variety of fundraising events that help support accessible transportation, general programs, inclusion opportunities, the Kevin T. The Firearms Concealed Carry Act, passed in July 2013, forbids carrying a concealed weapon into government buildings and parks, which includes all Hoffman Estates Park District facilities and parks. When you enter our parks and facilities, you will see signs posted at the entrances that are approved by the Illinois State Police, to remind all patrons of the law.

Americans with Disabilities Act

The Hoffman Estates Park District complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which prohibits discrimination in the provision of programs, services or activities to individuals with disabilities. We invite any residents with a special need to contact our staff upon registration, so that a smooth inclusion may occur. If you have questions about the park district's policy regarding ADA, or believe you have been unfairly discriminated against in the provision of programs, services, or activities of the Hoffman Estates Park District, please contact Gary Buczkowski, at 847-310-3606. For the deaf or hearing impaired, call the Illinois Relay Center operator at Dial 7-1-1 or 800-526-0844. Visit illinoisrelay711.com for more information.

Participation Information

Communications & Marketing Release

As a participant in a Hoffman Estates Park District program or event when using one of its public parks or facilities, you may be photographed or videotaped by the Hoffman Estates Park District (HEPD) or its assigns and transferees. By registering in a program you are granting permission to HEPD to copyright, use and publish the same in print and/or electronically with or without your name and for any lawful purpose, including for example, publicity, illustration, advertising, program guide, brochures, newsletter, email, digital media boards, website, social media, news releases or other promotional materials.

Social Media Guidelines

The Hoffman Estates Park District engages customers through many digital outlets, including (but not limited to) heparks.org, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Foursquare, Flickr, LinkedIn and Pinterest, Instagram. The Park District maintains many sub groups among its social media websites, including, but not limited to: HEPD Ice Arena, HEPD Preschool, PSS&WC, Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club, Bo’s Run & Freedom Run Off Leash Dog Parks. These guidelines pertain to all websites maintained by the Hoffman Estates Park District. Questions or concerns regarding Hoffman Estates Park District’s social media activity should be submitted to the C&M Department at 847-871-3672.

ThorGuard Lightning Prediction System

The Hoffman Estates Park District utilizes the ThorGuard Lightning Prediction system at our facilities and parks. The system helps alert patrons to hazardous weather conditions. One 15-second blast signals a potentially dangerous weather situation approaching. Clear the area immediately and find appropriate shelter. 3 short blasts signals all clear, safe to return. If you see lightning or hear thunder, even if the alarm doesn't sound, potentially dangerous weather is approaching. Clear the area and return 20 minutes after last occurrence.

Scholarships Available

The Friends of HE Parks provides scholarships to residents who are financially unable to participate in our programs. To apply, request a Scholarship Application at the Service Desk at the Triphahn Center, Willow Recreation Center or Prairie Stone Sports & Wellness Center.
