LETTER Head of School Dear Regis Community, Little did we know when we set out on our 2020-21 school year that Goal Four of our mission would be the centerpiece of all we hoped for. Building our Regis School community in-person was going to be a challenge. How would we build community with the precautions of socialdistancing, sanitizer, masks, class cohorts and a closed campus? We quickly realized our essential parents, faculty, staff and administrators could not gather on a closed campus. To truly build community, we needed everyone’s Plan B in living the charism, mission and heritage of the Society of the Sacred Heart. This called for making the love of God known through our actions as we were apart. You achieved that by responding generously to the many opportunities to give from your heart. As all of us were required to adjust to a changed world, you brought stability with your faith in our Regis community. The commitment to hold the community together was accomplished through your faith and trust in the Regis mission. Thank You! Your trust revealed the presence of God to each and every one of our community members. Each of us were forced to live a more remote life away from family and friends. We viewed the community over livestream and Zoom calls. Deep down we knew something was missing from our remote gatherings and distant greetings. Feeling the collective joy of more than two or three gathered as one community was missing. Appreciation, gratitude and gratefulness often come to us after the fact, but this past year reminded us every day that our Regis community is a gift given to us by God. We each made an intentional decision to remain connected as a community in the midst of adversity and looking into the face of an unknown future. There is a deep appreciation in my heart for your commitment to our Regis mission. Our Regis boys are grateful for your generous and kind acts. When we face struggles together as a community, we are stronger for the road ahead. The road ahead is bright because of your faith in our mission! Let us celebrate together our courageous community spirit! In Gratitude,

Dennis P. Phillips Head of School

LEGACY Rosie & Roy Sandoval Rosie and Roy Sandoval, current Regis grandparents, have a passion for Catholic education. When their grandson, Leo H., entered Kindergarten at Regis in 2013, they were excited about his future in a Catholic school. This year, their grandson Louis H. joined the Regis community in Lower School, and the Sandovals have enjoyed seeing him blossom in Regis’ all-boys environment. Rosie and Roy have been active participants in the Regis community since their very first Grandparents’ Day in 2013. Reflecting on their involvement at Regis in a recent conversation, Roy said: “One of the things that Rosie and I both believe in is that the greatest thing you can do for your kids is education, and that’s the greatest investment you can make. And, of course, the school—our part in that—is to participate actively where we can and to donate to the extent that we can. So, that drives us. And, of course, our love for the boys. We love being involved in whatever we can.” And involved they have been! Before the pandemic, Rosie and Roy joined the Regis community for as many masses as they could and every Grandparents’ Day they were able to attend. Last year, they participated in Mr. Phillips’ new Grandparent Book Club and Virtual Advent and Lenten Grandparent Retreat, and they joined in-person for the Grandparent Book Club this fall too. They are both excited to once again attend masses and events on campus at Regis this school year. Rosie added: “We are thoroughly happy with this school, and Roy and I would certainly like to participate in whatever if anyone were to ask us to do something, because it’s good to be around an atmosphere like this. You want to do things for the community— this is a community, you know? And it’s a good one. And in order for it to grow more, you have to have participation, not just from the parents, but from grandparents, aunts, uncles and whomever can help. That’s what it’s about.”

Both natives of Corpus Christi, Texas, Rosie and Roy experienced Catholic education first-hand in elementary school and then in middle school too for Roy. In fact, they attended Kindergarten together at Christ the King Elementary School in Corpus Christi, but they didn’t know each other well at that point. They met again in high school, and their friendship blossomed. The Sandovals celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary in 2021, and they joke that they experienced a very long courtship counting from Kindergarten onward. One of Rosie’s fondest memories from her time at Christ the King was when the Bishop came to visit. “I thought, ‘Is he God?’ because we had to kiss [his] ring and bow. I thought that was very special,” she said. For Roy, he has vivid memories of watching the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament roller-skating in their habits with their rosary beads when he would wait for his father to pick up him up after sports practice in the afternoons. “That was something that’s been with me all my life,” he recollected. Roy also recalled getting out onto the playing field with the priests at Christ the King: “The priests would play soccer with us, and they wore the cassocks. So, they would lift up their skirts to kick the ball. They were from Ireland, so they had a lot to share. That’s what they grew up with—soccer, not baseball! That was part of the good memories that you carry with you. To see the things that are happening at Regis without the clergy, it’s encouraging because there’s a lot of people with like minds, and they believe in the things that we believed in growing up. So, that was a good experience and the memories of that carry forward. When we walked into [Regis], that was one of the things that we hoped to see.” During elementary school at Christ the King, Rosie’s

parents moved to a new neighborhood, and she changed schools to attend the new, nearby public school. She missed her Catholic school education, but her parents kept her involved in the church through Continuing Catholic Education (CCE), providing her with ongoing faith formation. Rosie and Roy married in 1970 and then welcomed their daughter, Theresa, a few years later. Soon thereafter, Roy’s work moved their new family to El Paso, Texas, where Theresa began Montessori school. The Sandovals relocated again to Houston a few years later, and Rosie and Roy decided to enroll Theresa in Catholic school, but God had different plans for their family. Rosie recalled: “Well come to find out, this was a time when you couldn’t get gas. And I kept saying ‘Now, how am I going to get this child to school every day worrying about gas?’ I didn’t know what to do! So, I tried it, and I said, ‘This is not going to work.’” Much like Rosie’s own experience in Corpus Christi, Theresa instead attended the new, nearby public school in Katy, Texas, where the Sandovals had moved once settling in the Houston area. Theresa also attended CCE classes for her faith formation and made friends with a group of Catholic students in her school, staying connected with the Church throughout her youth. When Rosie found out their grandson Leo would be attending Regis, a Catholic school, she exclaimed, “Finally! This child is going to be in Catholic school. I thanked God. ‘Thank you, God, for bringing this little boy here.’ I couldn’t finish my Catholic education. Theresa—I tried, but it didn’t work.” The Sandovals were ecstatic that their grandson would benefit from attending a Sacred Heart Catholic school. While attending their first Grandparents’ Day that year, she remembered just how excited Leo was: “He would take me around and you could tell he was just very, very excited. The Kindergarten teacher was wonderful—Mrs. Kilbride. Oh my goodness, she was just amazing, and you could just sense that she was really into the children, into the boys. And they were just walking around and pulling the grandparents all over the place! We loved it. Right away, I had a very great feeling, and I do thank God every day for this school and what this school has done for Leo. And I am praying for the same thing for Louis.” 12

2020-21 Regis School Annual Report

To Rosie, one of the main benefits of a Catholic education beyond academics is instilling the importance of Mass in each student’s life: “The most important thing in all of this is the fact [the boys] go to Mass together as a group—this is one thing that I like most about this school, and this is why we like to come to Mass—because it’s so nice to see all of the little ones to the older ones participating. Eventually, these boys realize why they’re at Mass. It’s Jesus. It’s the Eucharist. And that’s what it’s about.” The Sandovals are proud of their daughter Theresa and son-in-law Travis for how they have raised Leo and Louis. They feel confident their grandsons will grow up to become good Catholic, Christian men because of their parents’ influence and because of Regis’ impact on their lives. To Roy, Goal V, personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom, is something he hopes stays ever-present in the boys’ lives beyond the walls of Regis. He commented: “One of my big things that I pray for them nightly is that they learn to make good decisions. I think a good decision has long-term implications—a bad decision, even worse. I notice that if you look at the Five Goals, this is in the fifth Goal. We both admire the direction that these goals have taken... and I saw decision-making is there. We try to impress upon the boys to learn to make good decisions, to think before you speak or before you make the wrong move. Because there are consequences. Whether you are talking about what you buy at the grocery store, what you order for dinner, whether you need or want something— you have to consider everything involved in making a good decision.” The Sandoval’s grandson, Leo, will graduate from Regis in May of 2022. As he moves on to high school, college and beyond, both Rosie and Roy are hopeful that he will hold firm to his Catholic faith and hold onto the lifelongfriendships he has made during his nine years at Regis. They are hopeful that Louis will also form these friendships throughout his time in Lower School and Middle School at Regis too. “I want them to realize just how blessed they are just to even be here,” commented Rosie. Both Rosie and Roy look forward to experiencing many more Grandparents’ Days and many more grandparent activities at Regis in the coming years.

PADDLES Up The Regis community helped expand our play space with a very special Paddles Up at the Friday Knight Lights Auction & Gala on Friday, April 23, 2021 at the Houston Methodist Texans Training Center. After the guests experienced their own Congé, spending the evening playing laser tag, passing and catching footballs and working out the inflatable slide and obstacle course, the need for more play space was answered with very generous giving towards preparing the new lot purchased at the corner of Shady Villa and Whispering Pines. Funds were raised to level both the existing and new lot, add irrigation and drainage, overseed with both St. Augustine and rye grass and add landscaping, benches and signage. A beautiful statue of St. Francis in the southwest corner of the field anchors the space for outdoor religion classes and espacio. Our Knights are very excited to have additional play space for flag football, soccer and kickball! The new field opened for play in early November. In addition to completing the field for play, Paddles Up funded much needed equipment for basketball, such as The Gun 8000 basketball return, a remote control for extending and receding the basketball goals in the gym, new Wilson Evolution basketballs with the Regis Knights logo and a new basketball cart. Early Childhood also received six new tricycles, six new plasma cars and six new flying turtles to keep our fun times rolling along! A special opportunity to temporarily name the new field for the 2021-22 school year was graciously supported by the Hagemeister Family. Thank you to all of the donors who made these wonderful improvements to our campus and our athletics possible!
