2nd Life Curaçao Sustainble Projects

It's time for the 2nd newsletter and this time I will explain more about the project that encouraged me to walk this path. It was weirdly intentionally, yet unexpected. 2nd Life Curaçao came to me as a therapy method to deal with physical discomfort and the lack of financial aid. It couldn't have been a more sustainable experience. I literally made money from other people's throw aways while recreating myself. It brought me the title JCI IOBA Aspiring Creative Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2015 and taught me what an entrepreneur's life really is about. Not an easy choice when you have a disability and depend on other people to do everything. Yet, here I am, Managing Director of Buccaneer's Enterprises BV. What does that title really mean? Other than that I realized a dream that I dreamed sitting in my wheelchair watching other people live?

I am an example, whether I chose or not. So I might as well be a good one, right?

Humans and products are constantly changed instead of us changing the "environment" around the issues we encounter. 2nd Life Curaçao was created out of need to feel like I earned a place in our society, even if I couldn't function as society expected me too. The products we recycle are just as important as the people working with the materials because I've seen how their confidence has grown as they are transformed from crap to craft. I saw the self worth of a young lady increase when she saw her products being sold in a souvenir store. Instead of sitting home. she went out the door to discover her new life. 2nd Life Curaçao is more than just a product, it is reinventing life, one punch, one stroke or one cut at the time. As a The Recycled Pirate project we get the opportunity to educate participants, stores and collectors what Sustainable Thinking really means.

And that is basically the purpose of everything I do.

On top of that the tourists that visits our island has some unique story to tell.

We are programmed to believe what is supposed to be normal. As a society we do need standards, that standard however should never be formed by too many rules.

Times change. People change.

Experience evolve.

Stay Weird!

We do this without knowing it in our private and professional lives with severe consequences.

As a Pirate, I don't break the rules.

I create new ones.

Breaking rules is wasting energy on something that isn't mine.

By staying my "weird" I create a new normal that fits my lifestyle.

And set the example for others to embrace themselves.

Sustainable Projects 2nd Life Curaçao by The Recycled Pirate Sustainable projects mean that they carry a value for the community, financially or environmentally. Personally, I believe it also must inspire improvement. As I discovered I could make money from what other people threw away, I understood the educational purpose it has as well. What can we learn from recycling or upcycling?

Nature teaches us valuable lessons that we are eager to forget, yet everything we need to know we can learn from nature. Seeing trees being trimmed or even taken down unnecessary made me put 1 and 1 together. For years I observed local kalbas (gourd) lying under trees and not much was being done with them. It's natures gift and it has medicinal powers but the tree gives so abundant that we receive more than we can process. Yet other trees were pruned faster, or chopped down completely before their time was due. I did a little test with a death tree. And a living tree that almost got chopped down. And by the third tree I had such a deep conversation with a family about the importance of trees and tourism on the island that I knew I found a destination for many kalbas.

Nature is art, and we shall treat it as such. Kalbas are very good craft material for 2nd Life Curaçao's workshops. Restaurants and souvenir shops loved them as decoration. Tourists and international bloggers started to photograph with them and share it worldwide. With a little experimenting I managed to improve my skills so much that we sell the cut out heart as a key chain hanger as well. How much can you win by recycling a natural free product, right?
