What a summer it’s been! Thousands have visited our area and discovered that the Smokies are a wonderful place to visit. There’s been a variety of activities for all to enjoy, from the Concerts on the Creek series in Sylva to the Folkmoot USA performance & multiple festivals in Bryson City. If you didn’t participate, make sure to check it out next year. A couple of my favorite things about the end of summer are things that really define small-town America, especially here in the South; harvest festivals and the return of high school football. Local harvest festivals take us back to the days of the first settlers in our mountains, making us appreciate the foundations of our way of life here. It’s a nice reminder of the days of a slower paced, less stressful lifestyle, and sit’s something the whole family can enjoy, Also make sure to spend your Friday nights supporting this year’s high school football team. the Great Smokies

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited Park in the nation, and for good reason.  There is so much to get out and do no matter your level of experience, your age or your ability.  Whether it’s hiking one of the 150 official trails in the Park, fishing in one of many creeks that make up over 800 miles of stream bed, or you simply want to cruise along U.S. Highway 441 while you enjoy the tremendous roadside views, you really can’t go wrong.

U.S. Highway 441 is hands down one our favorite drives in western North Carolina.  There is so much to do along this iconic stretch of highway through Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  Curves, vistas, never-ending views, hiking trails, the Appalachian Trail, mile-high gaps, backcountry camping, wild trout fishing, front country camping, horseback riding, picnics and more can be found along this route. Enter Great Smoky Mountains National Park via 441 in Cherokee, NC. As you enter the Park, it feels like you’ve just entered another world, a world that connects you with settlers of old and technology of the future.


Witness this first-hand at the brand new ‘Oconaluftee Visitor Center’ and the historic ‘Mountain Farm Museum’, found 2 miles inside of the park from Cherokee. The new visitor center was built with the environment in mind, and is a certified ‘green design’. Just behind the center, you’ll find tons of history at the Mountain Farm museum. This is a must stop on your way into the park! After learning about the park’s history and all of the wonderful things to do within it’s borders, get back onto 441 and head North. We recommend taking the family to Mingus Mill for another historical experience along the short hiking trail. Maybe it’s fishing or camping that you seek? Well, be sure to stop in at Smokemont Campground where you’ll find well over 100 campsites, hiking trails, an historic church and Bradley Fork. The flat layout of the campground makes it great for riding bikes or for leisurely strolls around the campsite loops. If it’s long-range views and breathtaking sunsets you long for, head up to Clingmans Dome. At 6,643 feet of elevation, Clingmans Dome is the tallest peak inside of the park and offers stunning views in every direction. Access ‘Clingmans Dome Road’ from 441 for 7 miles until you reach the mile-high parking area. Here, you’ll find restrooms and a new visitor center, complete with it’s own souvenir shop. The views are great from the parking area, but for the ultimate experience, head up the 1 mile (roundtrip) paved trail to the summit and look out tower. Although the trail is paved, it’s strenuous and requires proper footwear/clothing. Keep in mind that the temperature at elevations over 5,000 or 6,000 feet become much cooler than the those of the valley. From valley floor all the way up to the highest peaks, there is something for everyone to enjoy in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We hope you’ve enjoyed this brief overview of the park.
