CLINGMANS DOME ROAD TO CLINGMANS DOME TOWER & TRAIL The summer months are a great time in the NC Smoky Mountains to take scenic drives, explore the beauty of this area, and try to beat the heat. Some areas provide cooler temps and along the way you’ll find overlooks, picnic areas, hidden waterfalls, and more! One of our favorite drives is Clingmans Dome Road located in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and is 7 miles long. Drive up to Clingmans Dome from US Hwy 441 to an elevation of 6,643 ft. Clingmans Dome is the highest elevation in the entire park and offers some of the most stunning views around, from it’s tower as well as from it’s parking lot. Once there, you will have an opportunity to hike along a paved 0.5 mile path to the tower. We highly recommend doing this. It is well worth it! Take comfortable shoes and maybe an extra long sleeve tshirt as it can be as much as 20 degrees cooler on the summit.
