The Bad

The Good GMO Laws Loom In about 10 days, voters in the forward-thinking states of Colorado and Oregon will go to the polls to decide a number of elections and issues.

Chief among those choices will be whether to require Big Food to inform consumers of what’s in the food we buy at the supermarket. Measure 92 (in Oregon) and Proposition 105 (in Colorado) could be the first laws passed by general election to require mandatory labeling of foods containing scientifically altered genetic makeup. Public awareness of genetically engineered (GE) and genetically modified organisms (GMO) has grown exponentially over the past 18 months. Good news is that passage of the laws is leading polls in both the Beaver State and the Silver State. In Oregon, polls say 45 percent for passage and 35 percent against with 20 percent unknown. Passage of Prop 105 leads polls by an even greater margin, 52 to 27. Want to know who doesn’t want these laws to pass? Monsanto has spent $4 million to fight M-92 and a whopping $4.7 mil in an attempt to defeat Colorado’s Prop 105. The Environmental Working Group has found that industria l processed food companies have spent over $30 million so far this year in trying to keep their use of GMO ingredients secret. Meanwhile, two of my favorite companies, Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap and Chipotle restaurants are backing GMO labeling. Come on voters! Make it good news on Nov. 5.

Domina Theory Meanwhile in Nebraska, vote on Nov. 4. Consider that Dave Domina is defending our farmers from a company seeking to seize land for a pipeline carrying foreign oil. And also consider that Brad Ashford could deliver us from Lee Terry while building bipartisan unity in D.C. Weight just a little. The late, great Vince Gironda, the famous Iron Guru I new in the ‘80s and ‘90s, used to call free weights and barbells his “magic wands.”

Vince forgot more about health, healing and nutrition than the CDC will ever know. So now a researcher at Georgia Institute of Technology has completed a study that demonstrates even a small amount of time lifting weights causes a tremendous benefit to the brain. The research measured brain performance and memory after just brief workouts and found dramatic improvement after just 50 reps in some cases. It echoes what Vince taught me in 1983. “Results from weightlifting are immediate. First, more energy travels through the nerves within just a rep or two. Then blood circulation improves and maintains for a day or two. Finally, within 24 hours, the nitrogen balance in the body im-

Life is Ebola Cherries It should come as no surprise that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a misnomer if there ever was one and a federal agency in the pocket of Big Pharma and Medicine for Profit, has failed miserably in guiding the hospital industry through the Ebola situation. Hubris is the primary character trait of those involved. Look, we need our valiant healthcare workers, the nurses and doctors willing to put their lives on the line every day in emergency rooms and ICUs across the country.

And they do it 24/7/365, exposed to tuberculosis, staph and flu daily. For acute, traumatic care, we could do no better than those dedicated workers.

But we’ve known for a long time that the American healthcare system is broken and that’s the fault of the policy makers and the administrators who handcuff the worker bees. It’s time to remove profit-motivated corporations from running the ship during the good times and leaving us with unprepared institutional agencies in time of need.

Zero Water The old lady goes to the faucet on a hot, dry day. She turns the handle but nothing comes out.

No water. Someplace in Saharan Africa, a third-world country, perhaps? No. America. Thousands are without running water in central California during the worst drought in memory. Groundwater levels have dropped over 60 feet in many places, including Porterville, Calif. Civic and private wells are dry, bone dry with no hope of replenishment in sight. Americans living with no running water while we squander water on ethanol production and monoculture farming, brought on by the biggest farce in agricultural history, the so-called “Green Revolution.” Industrial food is mismanaging natural resources and no one is minding the store, let alone the plumbing. VISIONS FROM FIVE MINUTES INTO THE FUTURE • OCTOBER 22, 2014 • In the next few years, the development of cold fusion will lead to a period of previously unimagined financial growth. In approving this combination of deadly chemicals for use in the next generation of genetically modified corn and soybeans, the EPA ignored its own directive of protecting species from environmental threats. Arrrgh.

hen I watched a preview snippet of Alton’s Brown Edible Inevitable tour I was confused as to what the show would actually entail.

From what I could tell, there will be food and music.

There will also be comedy and maybe some stuff exploding. Or, at least, that’s what I gathered when I saw that the folks in the front row are urged to wear plastic ponchos.

“What I wanted to develop was a culinary variety show, a kind of old-style variety show where there’s a lot of different things going on all kind of centered around food,” Alton told me. “Of course, a variety show has to have live music so I do some of my food songs, which are hopefully hilarious.” He laughs and adds, “They make me laugh at least.”

Alton tells me that fans of his will recognize and appreciate some elements they’re familiar with, such as the puppets he uses within his show. “There are also two very large, very unusual and potentially dangerous culinary demonstrations,” he says, assuring me that nobody has been harmed in these demonstrations, but warns me that “occasionally particulate matter is emitted by one of these devices.”

It’s a show with lots of audience interaction and a Twitter Q&A that runs throughout the show. Alton says that whether or not you’re a fan of his, you’re probably going to have a great time at the show. “I’ve had folks who have said to me, ‘I didn’t know you from Adam, but I still had a good time.’” After a pause for reflection, he adds, “As long as you’re interested in food. If you have no interest in food, there might be something better to do that night.”

Alton likes visiting Omaha because he knows that we know food. I told him that Omaha goes bananas for food types like him, and without missing a beat he replies, “Well, go bonkers.”

He’s excited to spend some time in Omaha and says that one of his favorite things about touring is spending time in different cities and trying different food. When he asked me where he should make sure to visit for lunch during his visit I suggested Block 16.

He’s also familiar with the Orpheum and counts it among one of the most beautiful venues he’s slated to visit.

“The theater that we’re playing in Omaha is pretty fantastic. I’ll be honest, I do love touring. I came from a theater background. I was a theater major in college. The nightly ritual of ‘trying to get it right’ is something I enjoy.”

So how does a commercial television director become a wildly popular food personality and author? You might be expecting some advice along the lines of follow your dreams, blah blah blah, but Alton has a different perspective. “There are two ways to live your life,” he says. “You either play by the rules or you don’t. Somewhere along the line I just decided to play by my own rules and not allow myself to be defined professionally or personally by the kind of normal operating procedures. Life’s too short for that and I also think that you have to identify and cultivate what your skill set is.”

“I talk to student groups and I say, ‘Look, I don’t care about your dreams. I don’t care about your hopes and your wishes. I don’t care if you want to be an astronaut. Nobody cares what you want. What I care about is what you can do. What your capabilities are. You gotta figure out what it is that you can do and do it.”

“Twenty years ago when I was directing TV commercials I never thought for a moment that I’m going to end up on camera making shows about food,” he continues. “But then there’s the fact that it’s something I can do. I’m far more interested in cultivating my capabilities than chasing my dreams.”

Alton’s on tour until December, when he heads back to Los Angeles for another round of his television show Cutthroat Kitchen. He’s then back on the road until sometime in April, and then he has a new book coming out in the fall of 2015. “I have a couple other projects… unless I drop dead from exhaustion,” he says.

He wants to tell me more about his book, but he can’t because his publisher hasn’t given him the green light to talk about it yet. “It’s a different kind of book for me. I would tell you more, but I don’t want to get in trouble.”

He’s an interesting guy to talk to and an entertaining performer. Get your tickets for his upcoming show on Thursday, Oct. 30, at 7:30 p.m. at the Orpheum before they’re all gone and check out his show Cutthroat Kitchen on the Food Network. I

’ve told you before about the epic tequila tastings that La Mesa does once in a while, and I imagine that sometimes when people read about these events after the fact they kick themselves for not having bought tickets. I understand the self-pity, particularly when it comes to these tequila tastings, because they’re not only fun, but the food’s exceptional and the tequila is amazing.

So allow me to give you a proactive change to avoid future regret. Another tequila tasting is coming, and this time it’s at the Bellevue location on Tuesday, November 11. There is still time to reserve your spot, although I suggest doing it sooner rather than later because these dinners have a tendency to fill up quickly.

What can you expect at the tequila tasting? La Mesa takes some of the best tequila and pairs it with some of their best dishes, providing an overall culinary experience that has more than once left me flabbergasted.

This time they’re featuring more than one brand of tequila, says La Mesa’s Regional manager Jose Salazar. “We’ll have a combination of multiple brands,” says Jose.

Among them is Avion Reserva 44, which he explains to me means that the tequila rested for 44 months before being bottled. He also told me that the Reserva will be served as a sipping tequila while the rest of the tequilas will be served in cocktails.

In fact, there’s a big emphasis on cocktails at this particular dinner - so much so that La Mesa is bringing in Sly Cosmopoulos, who is the Corporate Mixologist for Republic National Distribution Company. It’s Sly’s job to figure out the best ways to mix drinks.

“She’s really good at what she does,” says Jose. “She’s quite the big deal.”

Sly tells me that she enjoys pulling together unique tequila cocktail combinations. “My ultimate goal is to give attendees unique flavor profiles and flavor combinations that you typically can’t find on a beverage menu,” she says. “People pay for an experience that exceeds expectations and an experience that takes them on a journey. I intend on doing that by aligning my cocktails with the chef’s food choices and taking them on a flavor journey through Jalisco – no passport required!”

She sees this as an opportunity to showcase her mixologist talents and have a lot of fun. “When doing these tequila dinners, boundaries go away and it is one night where the sky is the limit and it is a few hours for all of us to think, eat, and drink tequila!”

If that’s not enough to get you excited about the tequila dinner, consider that Jose has a menu planned that’s going to delight your taste buds and complement the tequila drinks perfectly. “We always make a special menu for these dinners,” he says. “It’s not only about drinks, but it’s about the food as well.”

Sly adds that these dinners can be a great way to drive international cuisine without having to hop on a plane. “People are seeking out an adventure,” she says. “They are looking for the whole world on a plate, so they are thinking globally but eating locally.”

In my experience with these tastings, you get a lot more than you pay for, especially after you consider the quality of the tequila you’re served and all the care and thought that went into the food and drink pairings. n the Aretha Franklin anthem “I Will Survive” a woman declares her personal autonomy. Not needing to find validation in another is a liberating thing worth celebrating in song.

Life imitates art whenever a poor single mother breaks free of the shackles of fear, self-doubt and shame that hold her back, say women who’ve been there and now help others out of that trap.

Ericka Guinan was a single mom trapped in a cycle of despair before finding the courage to seek guidance from women who’d been in her shoes. Today, she’s the self-sufficiency programs facilitator at Heart Ministry Center, 2222 Binney St., where she helps women like Aja Alfaro, a young single mom of two, find the confidence to move toward their dreams.

Since graduating from the center’s Pathway program Aja’s turned her life around. She works as a SNAP outreach specialist at Heart Ministry, assisting women apply for food stamps she needs herself. Guinan’s been there, too. Each woman’s gone through the wringer of bad relationships, no work, low pay, food

y continued from page 6 “Katrina Gilbert’s story is just one example of how women often live paycheck to paycheck. We expect the audience to learn more about poverty in Omaha and what efforts are being made community and statewide to ease this burden for families,” Zych says.

“It’s not easy living paycheck to paycheck,” says Alfaro, who knows from first-hand experience. “It’s hard, it’s a struggle.”

Alfaro’s made progress toward independence.

“It’s still hard but I’m getting there. Things started changing a lot just this year, when I finally got my own place for the very first time at the end of January.”

Alfaro’s steady income though sometimes makes her ineligible for certain benefits even though her earnings are barely above poverty level and she hasn’t reached self-sufficiency. It’s called the Cliff Effect and it plays havoc with the working poor. Tanya Cook introduced a bill in the Nebraska Legislature that would help some working parents continue qualifying for child care subsidies well beyond current limits.

Despite roadblocks to aid, Alfaro’s hopeful for the first time about the future. She plans resuming nursing studies.

“There is hope if people can get connected to the right resources. Once people have hope they can do things they never thought they could,” says Julie Kalkowski, co-director of the Financial Success Program through Creighton University’s Financial Hope Collaborative. The program works with single mothers for a year to undo old habits. “We ask our clients to do small, actionable steps – little changes that add up to real money. Once people start to feel like they are moving forward they are willing to do things they have been too intimidated or overwhelmed to do, like calling creditors. We also offer debt consolidation loans.”

Guinan agrees hope is essential before women buy into changing their lives. At Heart Ministry she says “we let each woman define her own pathway to success,” adding, “We ask what are your dreams, where do you want your life to be and then we try to figure out what we can do to help her get on the path to that.

We have a therapist that meets with them once a week.

We have a lot of resources and relationships within the community they can access. “ She says setting boundaries, getting an education, budgeting, building healthy relationships and having a positive support network is key.

It’s all about removing obstacles and Guinan says “a lot of the obstacles are in our head because we have a big fear of doing something new or of failure or of success. We a lot of times don’t believe in ourselves.”

She says overcoming negative self-talk and taking responsibility for one’s life is necessary for success.

Guinan lived it all out herself – the self-pity, the denial, the hitting bottom before asking for help.

“I was lucky enough to meet several strong, healthy women just far enough ahead of me to relate to my struggles yet offer solid solutions and advice. I think I trusted them because they were sharing their own person struggles with me. I related and saw myself in their stories yet they obviously had overcome so much.”

Aja Alfaro’s found a similar sisterhood at Heart Ministry. Its self-sufficiency programs help women navigate out of tough situations by matching them with mentors, enrolling them in classes that address financial planning, parenting and life skills and plugging them into school or training programs.

Women who’ve gotten their lives together like Guinan share their own stories – struggles, successes and all – with young women like Aja, who says Guinan and a mentor, Nancy, have taken her under their wing. “I needed to learn how to get on my own two feet to take care of my family and they’ve helped me to come pretty far. They helped me start college and get this job. I think the biggest thing was learning how to care about myself. I’m more focused now on me and my kids.”

Empowerment helps but working a low wage job won’t cut it. It’s why Cook supports a minimum wage hike and advocates women explore training programs for well-paying nontraditional jobs in high demand like welding and traditional career-track jobs in health care fields.

“A disproportionate number of women work at a wage level that could not support a family without public assistance. Nebraska’s behind the power curve in terms of offering a fair, living wage or the kinds of opportunities that allow families to work themselves out of poverty.”

Cook says financial literacy “is very important” for women who don’t know how to manage money. “The way many families are compelled to live whatever money comes in goes right out to some emergent or past-due need, so they don’t learn to save.”

Ericka Guinan calls for more services: “I believe we need more job training, quality childcare, affordable and safe housing options, mental health and mentoring for single mothers.” She says women’s voices must not be lost in the process. “In the Pathway Program we strongly believe each woman has valuable experience and feedback to offer.” She says lawmakers need to hear from more mothers about the tough choices they must often make, such as buying food versus meds.

Creighton’s Kalkowski says, “One of the things that has always amazed me is how brave so many working parents are to keep getting up every morning even though their situation is bleak. Most of us have no idea how desperate so many families are.”

eah McNary’s been there for much of Creighton volleyball’s ascendancy from weak little sister program in the shadow of Big Red to all-grown-up competitor holding its own.

“It’s exciting being a part of a process of building a program,” she says. “We’ve progressed a long way.

I think we are up there with them (Nebraska) now.”

The Florida native came to Omaha after only three years of serious volleyball competition. Many colleges missed on this classic late-bloomer. What she lacked in refined skills she made up for with athleticism, something that runs deep in her family. Two older sisters were major college scholarship track athletes and her father played college basketball. Though her mother didn’t play competitive college sports, she was a cheerleader. McNary was leaning to cheerleading herself after finding basketball too physical but settled on volleyball.

Her club play brought her to the attention of CU head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth, who couldn’t help but see what gets everyone pumped about McNary – explosive jumping ability and ridiculous elevation. Combined with a long arm span and the ability to strike the ball with great force, McNary has all the tools of an elite outside hitter. Except she’s 5’10 – 5’8 3/4 without shoes. Despite being susceptible to the block, she’s been an elite attacker all four years at CU and she’s heavily contributed to the Bluejays becoming a legit Top 25 team and making two consecutive NCAA postseason appearances.

Where CU invariably got swept by the Huskers, they regularly take a set now. They even beat NU in an exhibition. McNary’s a reason why CU now hangs with the big girls, though they’ve struggled against ranked foes this year.

She nearly bypassed athletics altogether to follow her true passion – the arts. She’s played music from a young age and she’s now a studio art major. She’s interested in doing art therapy one day. Booth says it’s the first time she’s coached someone who identifies as an artist. That artistic inclination is expressed in McNary’s highly emotional and empathetic nature.

She’s channeled her feeling-creative side into being an intense competitor, though her emotions still get the better of her. Booth says McNary’s at her best on the court when she has her emotions in check and her confidence on high.

After a solid start to this senior season McNary’s scuffled. Her season attack percentage is well below .200 owing to excessive hitting errors. Getting kills has never been a problem but even finding clean hits is a chore lately. Aware she’s pressing, she’s intent on correcting her mechanics, particularly her approach to the net. A sign of how far the program’s come is that even a year ago CU would have been in trouble with McNary slumping like this but Booth’s built such quality depth the team’s dominating Big East play (6-1) and doing fine overall (13-7) despite McNary’s decreased production.

HIGHFLYING Given her history she’s sure to get back on track.

“Coach says we’re a really resilient team and I think I’ve become a resilient player. When obstacles and tough situations present themselves I keep pushing through. I’m a very determined person. Working hard is something I take pride in. I want to be the best at whatever I do, even in art. That’s driven me. I think my drive is what pushes me over the edge. I have such a competitive edge because I hold myself to high standards. It hurts me to not do well “ She’s led the team in kills each of the past two years and is on pace to finish in the top five in kills all-time at the school. She carried CU to its only Missouri Valley Conference regular season and tournament titles in 2012 and to a second place finish in its inaugural Big East campaign last year.

Pegged to redshirt as a freshman, McNary developed so quickly and the team struggled so badly that three weeks into that season Booth inserted her into a match for the first time. It just happened to be against in-state rival and perennial measuring stick Nebraska. She proved she belonged and hasn’t looked back since.

“I was new to such a high level of volleyball. I think I’ve grown into being a confident player.”

One reason why she stood out in the NU match is that she was the lone African-American on the court.

That situation occurs less and less frequently as volleyball becomes more inclusive.

“I feel like the sport’s getting more diverse, which is awesome. It’s an encouraging thing,” says McNary, who idolized Destiny Hooker growing up and now

has two black teammates in Marysa Wilkinson and Brittany Lawrence. NU has its first ever black commit in Tiani Reeves. McNary hopes more girls who look like them are inspired to pursue the sport.

A big early confidence boost came between her freshman and sophomore years when she made a spring 2012 developmental trip to China with NU’s Alicia Ostrander to train with Chinese national players.

“I was so nervous. I wondered, What if I’m not good enough? It actually ended up being one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I for sure learned a high level of play. I think it made me appreciate the sport more.”

The grueling, multi-hour practices steeled her for anything.

“When I got back for summer two-a-day workouts it seemed so much easier. I had already prepared myself for a really tough season. China was like my preseason before preseason. I felt like I was more prepared, especially conditioning-wise, and I found myself getting after it more because everything there you had to go one-hundred percent.

“That trip showed me what I was capable of. It showed me what could be my future if I worked hard.”

As a sophomore she made first team All-MVC and was named to the league’s All-Tournament team. Last year she was a first-team All-Big East selection. She and teammate Kelli Browning were selected by USA Volleyball to participate in the U.S. Collegiate National Team program.

She now has aspirations of playing professionally (beach volleyball) after college. Major expectations spring from her high-achieving, super competitive family. Her mother’s a county judge in Florida.

“It makes me believe I can do anything in life.”

McNary, who has a heart for children, enjoyed a team trip to Nicaragua last summer that saw her and her teammates train and play matches but also do community service work with kids. She’s also made an Athletes in Action trip to Mexico that involved service work.

A perk about playing in the Big East is getting to visit places like New York City and the nation’s capital.

McNary’s started a family legacy at Creighton, where her sister Madison now attends law school.

With a big home stand this weekend against Big East foes Marquette (Friday) and DePaul (Sunday), CU can polish its resume for the NCAA selection committee. Should McNary and her mates make it back to the post-season, as they fully expect to, they plan advancing deeper in the tournament than before.

“We have all the pieces to do it. We just need to get over that hump.” , McNary and Co. play at 7 p.m. Friday and at 1 p.m.

Growing up with travel playing an integral part of his youth, Walters has continued to build recurring and extended drives throughout Omaha and the surrounding region into his practice. It is during such excursions that he stops to document utterly unremarkable yet serene locales in the city. Though these images are taken outside of the confines of a vehicle, they carry an energy of a quickly captured moment from the driver’s seat but not through the windshield. The artist has gifted the viewer with the experience of stopping for a single moment and looking left or right. The result is a series of images nearly devoid of figurative subjects that in many ways are bleak and without an inch of activity, even when figures are present. Images like “I-80 Interchange, Omaha NE” and “Seward and NW Radial HWY, Omaha NE” present places in and around Omaha that are nearly unrecognizable. They are cold and unwelcoming with most of the photos shot in either late fall or early spring when the cities look their worst.

Others, as in “Mid America and 24th St., Council Bluffs IA” and “20th and Farnam St. Omaha NE” show what would be a bustling intersection or gas stations that again, aside from some parked cars and working street lights, could be pulled from documentation of a disaster. Like many powerful works, the deafening inactivity is where these photos gain their strength. These 26 photos are why photographybased exhibitions can still be something to experience.

Viewers would be surprised to find that, after taking in these works over the course of a gallery visit, they are looking at locations in their own neighborhood, intersections they cross daily. Most of us here drive, but whether you’re in a Passat, a fixie, a hooptie or on foot, I would highly suggest a visit to the sites the artist decided to feature or simply stopping for a second upon your normal route and looking anywhere but the road ahead. — Joel Damon

incoln blues musician Sean Benjamin passed away unexpectedly Oct. 15. His friend, exwife and fellow musician Laurie McClain posted the news to Facebook, “Sadly, my dear friend and former husband, Sean Benjamin, passed away suddenly last night of what appears to be natural causes. He was in relatively good health and spirits when I spoke to him a few days ago.” Services are pending. The Zoo Bar hosts a benefit to help raise funds for Benjamin’s final expenses Sunday, Oct. 26, 2-7 p.m. Benjamin’s family has set up an email address at seanbenjaminfuneralfund@gmail.com to accept donations via PayPal. Copies of Big Highways, a previously unreleased album by Benjamin, are available for sale at Lincoln’s Zoo Bar. Benjamin, born in 1955, was one of Lincoln’s most respected blues musicians. He and the late Larry Boehmer, longtime Zoo Bar owner and promoter, played in several bands together through the years from The Heart Murmurs to The Tablerockers to Not All There. Benjamin’s early years were spent on the upper East Coast where he studied guitar with Paul Lenart (who later joined T-Bone Walker’s band) and Bob Margolin (of Muddy Waters’ band). Benjamin played briefly as lead guitarist for T-Bone Walker before Walker’s passing in 1975.

Benjamin was a 2000 inductee into the Nebraska Music Hall of Fame.

“S

elfie fever” has begun to sully the sacred Islamic pilgrimages to Mecca, according to scholars who complained to Arab News in September. What for centuries has been a hallowed journey intended to renew the spirit of Islam (that all Muslims are called upon to experience at least once) has come, for some in the so-called “Facebook era,” to resemble a trip to Disneyland, with visitors to the Sacred Mosque texting friends the “evidence” of their piety. (Another scholar complained in a New York Times opinion piece in October that Mecca is often experienced more as a tour packaged by marketers and centered around Mecca’s upscale shopping malls rather than religious structures.)

The New Normal Just in time for California’s new law requiring explicit consent for students’ sexual activities is the free iPhone/Google app Good2Go, which developer Lee Ann Allman promises will simplify the consent process (and even document it). As described in a September Slate.com report, Good2Go requires the initiator to send the prospective partner to at least four smartphone screens, wait for a text message, provide phone numbers (unless he/she is a multiple-user with an “account”) and choose accurately one’s sobriety level -- all before “the mood” evaporates (ending the app’s usefulness). It took the tech-savvy Slate writer four minutes to navigate the process -- and she was still unclear which sexual activities had been consented to, since those specifics aren’t referenced. (The app has since been pulled from the market.)

Donnell lamented to New Jersey’s The Record in October that he had benched virtual “Larry Donnell” on his fantasy team the week before because he thought his other tight end (“Vernon Davis”) would do better. In reality, real Donnell had a career-high game, with his three touchdowns leading the real Giants to a 45-14 victory. However, Donnell’s fantasy team lost badly because virtual Larry Donnell (and his weekend statistical bonanza) was on Donnell’s bench.

A Perfect World In August, the Tampa Bay Times reported a dispute in Dunedin, Florida, between 12-yearold lemonade-stand operator T.J. Guerrero and the adult neighbor (Doug Wilkey) trying to close him down as an unlicensed entrepreneur, despite T.J.’s business plan for assisting his favorite animal shelter. Of course, T.J. was quickly inundated with donations, media praise and more lemonade sales. The Campaign Trail “My Friends, I Am a Man of Action!”: Roger Weber, running for a Minnesota House seat in November, is now being sued by a neighbor over a property-line dispute near Nashwauk. Rather than working with an arbitrator or mediator, or letting the legal process run its course, Weber in 2013 took a chain saw and sliced completely in half the large, two-car garage that Weber says sat half on his property and half on the neighbor’s.

The Foreign Press The family of Kai Halvorsen of Lillestrom, Norway, planning a holiday in Thailand, feared that their bulldog, Igor, would be traumatized, having never been left alone. Halvorsen and a friend arranged with Labben Kennel to make a replica of the family living room to calm Igor’s anxiety. The two men painted the walls the same shade of gray, brought in the family couch, built a replica coffee table, and moved in Igor’s bed, carpet, pillows and blankets. (However, according to the friend, Igor spent much of the holiday cavorting outside with his new friend, Helga, the St. Bernard.)

Perspective Prosecutors in Killeen, Texas, are seeking the death penalty for Marvin Guy, who in May shot one SWAT officer to death and wounded three as they conducted an unannounced (“no-knock”) drug raid on his home at 5:30 a.m. -- leading Guy to believe hoodlums were breaking in and thus provoking him to grab his gun and start firing. (The tip given to police was bogus; no drugs were found.) However, in December, 90 miles away in another Texas county, mistaken SWAT-raid victim Henry Magee also killed

an officer under similar circumstances (except that Magee actually had some marijuana), but was cleared in the shooting by a grand jury’s acceptance of selfdefense. Guy is black; Magee is white.

Creme de la Weird Harmonic Convergence of Perversions: (1) Palm Beach County, Florida, sheriff ’s deputies searching the home of child-pornography suspect Douglas Wescott, 55, stumbled upon about 50 dead cats stored in four freezers.

Wescott’s computers were seized, along with another 30 to 35 live cats. (2) In September, following a months-long trial in Canada’s Nunavut territory, defrocked Catholic priest Eric Dejaeger, 67, was found guilty of 31 counts of raping children and one of raping a sled dog.

Least Competent Criminals Not Ready for Prime Time: (1) William Dixon, 21, was arrested in Brentwood, Tennessee, in August fleeing a Best Buy store after arousing suspicion. According to the police report, Dixon, on foot, ran across all lanes of Interstate 65, but the chase ended when he collided with a tree. (2) In October, a man unnamed in news reports snatched a bottle of wine from the shelf of a Sainsbury’s supermarket in East Grinstead, England, and dashed for the door.

However, he ran into a shelving unit and knocked himself unconscious.

Inside of writer/director David Ayer’s Fury is a tight, 90-minute, “we will hold this line” war movie populated with complex characters and surprisingly good performances. Problem is, it was slipped into the carcass of a dirty, confused, overly serious, inconsistently grotesque snoozer in which Shia LaBeouf cries so often you’ll want to beat the accountant’s mustache off his stupid face if you don’t already.

The film’s opening text sets hopes impossibly high for self-awareness, describing the timing near the end of World War II and the superiority of the German tanks.

“Oh boy,” you may think, “these scrappy underdogs will fight to the death taking down the Fuhrer’s killing machines!” Nope! Mostly they talk about how bad war is, punch each other and cry.

We meet Don “Wardaddy” Collier (Brad Pitt), whose high-school-production-level fake facial scars tell us he’s nobody to F with—bonus points if you decided that “F” stood for “functionally communicate” with. His tank crew

is full of, well, absolute shitheels. There’s Trini “Gordo” Garcia (Michael Peña), who loves whores; Grady “CoonAss” Travis (Jon Bernthal), whose nickname should just about explain things and Boyd “Bible” Swan (Shia LaBeouf ), a Jesus freak with permanent weepy eyes and “punch me” face. When their gunner dies on a mission only their tank, called “Fury,” survived, they are saddled with a noob soldier, Norman Ellison (Logan Lerman).

Whenever the movie named after a tank shows a tank in a tank fight, it’s awesome…even if for some reason the Nazis all use green “tracer bullets” and the Americans all use red “tracer bullets,” making it look like a laser fight. But Fury keeps bogging down to make a remedial thematic lesson about war: it can turn good men into bad ones. The film completely stalls out in a remote German town, just so one character can have the obligatory war romance cliché. That said, considering the sheer volume of tasteless excuses to get actresses on screen topless, kudos to Ayers for wedging a gratuitous scene of Pitt slowly washing his chest for like 20 minutes.

Pitt is great as the bad good man and Bernthal is great as the good bad man. The others are mostly serviceable, save for the aforementioned mustachioed ham who shall remain named Shia LaBeouf. Fury is exactly what you’d expect when you let the guy who made Training Day make a war movie. Ayers is not the first director to incorrectly assume we would enjoy watching interesting characters in an interesting setting do very little for extended periods of time.

If you asked him, chances are Ayers would claim that the meat of the film, the last 40 minutes, was “set up” by the methodical pauses preceding it. He’d be wrong, but that’s probably what he’d say. Instead, that last sequence and others throughout the movie feel like fragmented bits of an awesome flick that jumped on a grenade. If you can mentally reassemble it, which some definitely will do, Fury will be the movie it should have been. , GRADE = C+

Crawford hit a home run by getting star Tippi Hedren to join him at the event to be held at 7 p.m. at the Joslyn Art Museum. Tickets are $23, are available at all Hy-Vee stores and benefit the Nebraska Kidney Association.

It’s a great chance to donate to a good cause and see the only movie that made me hate birds more than the St. Louis Cardinals do. n You know who is awesome? You. (Always butter your audience up.) But also, nurses are awesome and largely underappreciated. Well not by Film Streams. They are collaborating with The Center for Health Partnerships at Nebraska Methodist College to bring a special screening of The American Nurse to the Ruth Sokolof Theater Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. Following the screening, a panel discussion will be asked about the changing scope of practice for nurses, changes from the Affordable Care Act and “Does this look like a rash to you?” n Marvel Studios has crafted an image so sterling, they can roll out a movie with a guy from “Parks and Rec,” a tree and a talking raccoon and have it be top the annual box office.

DC/Warner Bros, on the other hand, cannot physically get out of their own way, even when they get it right. This week, they announced a rather exciting and cool slate of movies. Except, it was total overkill (10 movies), premature (it goes through 2020) and they released it with no fanfare on a Wednesday during an investor meeting. Get excited people! But how do you simultaneously announce the highest profile female solo superhero movie ever (Wonder Woman) and dump it in a press release? The New York Comic Convention was like five minutes ago! So instead of sensational hype that could have been spread out over months, we got an info dump to sift through. DC: “We’re even bad when we’re good.”
