VIVA 5 MAYO [Por Bernardo Montoya]

T

[By Bernardo Montoya]

T

he Cinco de Mayo celebration in Omaha was a huge hit, and thousands of people celebrated this historic Mexican day, which is one of the most beloved holidays in the United States. This celebration took place over a three-day period, and it was the perfect opportunity for local families and for our close neighbors from the surrounding areas to come to South Omaha to enjoy the festivities, participating in one of the many activities for this special occasion. The 29 years of experience working on this particular Cinco de Mayo event at Omaha were put to good use for making sure even the smallest of details were perfect for the occasion, and we must also highlight that 24,135 people walked through the streets in this event. Something exciting was the wide range of objectives set for this particular event, such as having a fundraiser to support local organizations, along with several sports activities and a large set of exhibitors from the public and private sectors, to name a few. “I’m astonished by how big and beautiful this party is,” said Roxina Marquez, a teacher who works with kids. “The idea of having a celebration that allows us to present our culture, our food or our regional costumes, is priceless. Sure, it is important that everyone knows why we are celebrating, but this should only emphasize the great work of everyone involved with this event.” History tells us that the Cinco de Mayo

celebration commemorates the battle of Puebla, a fight in Puebla, Mexico, which lasted four hours and allowed the Mexican forces to be victorious with an army of 4,500 poorly-armed men who somehow managed to defend against the fully-armed French army which attacked with 8,000 soldiers. Right now, Cinco de Mayo is a huge Mexican holiday which has become the favorite party of Latinos and Americans alike. It might sound wrong, but it’s true: “The battle of Puebla,” better known as “Cinco de Mayo” is celebrated on a larger scale in the United States in comparison to what is done in Mexico, this according to Peter F. Hanks of the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, from where he visited to participate at this event. Hanks added: “It is very comforting to see how as time has passed this party has managed to become part of popular culture in the United States, and this can be seen in Omaha, where Cinco de Mayo manages to gather a huge number of individuals, with people beyond those who are part of Mexican-American, Chicano or Latino groups.” Speaking of the Chicano community, we must highlight that by the end of the 60s said community had adopted the date for the battle of Puebla as a holiday. Today, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in all of the Caribbean, in Australia, Canada and in many Latino countries. “It’s a great way to honor our heritage,” said Dolores Villa, of Omaha Public Schools. “I’ve been coming to this event since I was a little girl, and today I’m joined by my two sons and my husband, which fills me with joy because we’re definitely strengthening our cultural identity as we promote this holiday.” We must remind everyone that this is not a federal holiday, which means that banks and other businesses are indeed open on Cinco de Mayo. However, it might end up being added to the official list of holidays: “This might happen thanks to how Cinco de Mayo helps to bring together the community, as well as thanks to the economic impact. Schools, politicians, religious groups, the whole world talks about Cinco de Mayo. It’s only a matter of time,” said Daniel Goltz of Iowa State University, who was celebrating near the Plaza de la Raza. John Barrientos, who was in charge of organizing the Cinco de Mayo celebration in Omaha for over 20 years, talked about the great job of the current administration and specifically of Marcos Mora from the South Omaha Businesses Association. Barrientos was surprised by this year’s event, and he highlighted the positive effect from having new people bringing great ideas to the table. He emphasized how safe and secure everything felt at the event, even in the areas where

alcohol could be purchased, which allowed him to walk around with his wife while theirs kids ran around having fun. Jamye Costa, a volunteer at one of the two areas where beverages where served for this event, said: “The Margarita and the Tequila have been the official drinks since 1930. Because of this, Cinco de Mayo is when most of the Tequila is consumed in the United States. This must not be seen as something negative, because it’s part of the celebration itself, and security measures were implemented to make sure the event went on smoothly.” The Omaha Police Department, as well as other law enforcement departments, helped to make this a great Cinco de Mayo, without a single incident to report. Local merchants were happy about the economic impact of this party. Everyone enjoyed a great concert by Diana Reyes. The Reader and El Perico contributed to this great party by celebrating their respective anniversaries as well as by providing an area with live music and beverages. According to organizers, people came to celebrate from Grand Island, South Dakota, Plattsmouth, Lincoln and Sioux City, to name a few. “It was a great party, and during the whole time I felt as if I was walking down the streets of Mexico,” said Marisela Estuardo, who was visiting from Lincoln. “The whole family planned to be here in Omaha for this celebration and it was definitely worth it. I was surprised to see how everything transforms and you feel for a moment as if you were in your homeland,” she said. Political candidates, entrepreneurs, athletes, housewives, students, musicians, promoters; everyone was there to party at the 29th celebration of Cinco de Mayo at Omaha..

hey are right here, they are around you and they are deeply committed to this place. They love Nebraska, they love Omaha and they are in touch with the values of this place,” said Maria Hinojosa of a group of ten young DREAMers from the ages of seventeen to twenty-five whose stories captured her during a visit to the Heartland Workers Center in South Omaha. According to Hinojosa they “essentially have been forced into becoming activists for our democracy,” adding “I don’t think they would be activists if it wasn’t for the fact that they feel they are stuck because our country and this state is not moving forward when it comes to immigration reform.” During her visit to the Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), Hinojosa told the audience about her experience at the Heartland Worker’s Center and encouraged Nebraskans to start a conversation about immigration reform in hopes of moving forward as a state. “All of you have a huge role to play in what the future of this state looks like,” said Hinojosa. Hinojosa pointed out that she also encountered some Nebraskans during her visit that indicated that some people in this state feel as if there is no room for dialogue about immigration reform. Hinojosa indicated that a lot of people choose not to talk about immigration because it is a shameful thing, but the time has come to

Local Event

have the conversation as a community so we can choose what we want for this state. Hinojosa has had many conversations about immigration reform with people all over the country. In fact, Hinojosa told her Omaha audience that she interviewed the president of the Idaho Dairy Farmers Association for Latinos USA on immigration reform. “I was expecting him to tell me that the reason he supports immigration reform is because he needs the workers in the dairy farms,” said Hinojosa. To Hinojosa’s surprise, the president of the Idaho Dairy Farmers Association supports immigration reform because of plain old family values. According to Hinojosa, Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrived in a small town one day and parked their vehicle outside of the only supermarket in town. Immigration agents were only asking brown skinned people for their immigration papers. “They had a truck there and they were asking people for their papers, when they could not present their papers they would lead them onto the bus to be deported,” said Hinojosa. “It was a horrible situation, people were just going into the store to go shopping and some of them were never going to see their kids again,” added Hinojosa. She indicated that the president of the Idaho Dairy Farmers Association asked an immigrant worker what this felt like. When the immigrant responded that his family could no longer go out in public as a

complete family unit for fear of having their family forever disrupted, the Dairy Farmers Association president came to the realization that they could not have this happening in their state. Tearing families apart was simply unacceptable to this Republican from Idaho. Hinojosa added that many of the dairy farmers in Idaho have Dutch roots and they remember being racially profiled in Europe during World War 2. “They don’t want racial profiling in their state,” she said. “Do you see how in one conversation we change the narrative?” asked Hinojosa, adding “it is not what you think the story is.” Hinojosa pointed out situations like this are occurring across the board, not only in Idaho but in Nebraska too. “Right now there are immigration agents in their offices planning to go to South Omaha tomorrow morning to pick someone up and process them for detention and deportation,” said Hinojosa. “What does it mean to all of you that this is the dynamic we are living through? What does it mean that the United States of America now has the highest population of people in civil detention?” asked Hinojosa. “These are people who have not committed a crime,” she added. According to Hinojosa the rights of immigrants are being violated every single day and the time has come to take action. “Step up to the plate, because we are watching,” concluded Hinojosa.

PROUD OF THE SUCCESS OF THE LATINA SUMMER ACADEMY AT THE CSM

hen I left my previous job where I worked with the church at the national level from Washington, D.C., I reviewed my mission and realized that I should be working with the Latino community to support and defend the dignity of Latino families, especially of women,” explained Maria Luisa Gaston, “which is why I came to Omaha to work at the Latina Center where I stayed for five years until I had the opportunity to collaborate with the College of Saint Mary (CSM).” Gaston has been at this institution for over 8 years now: “And I’m very happy because this Catholic college has a very beautiful mission that perfectly fits with my own personal mission, because they focus on removing the barriers that keep women from studying, since education is the key to eliminating poverty.” When she first arrived at CSM, Gaston was in charge of recruiting Latinas so that they could continue studying at this institution. “The first thing I did was look for the funds required so those that didn’t have the proper documentation could study at this private school, and that’s how the Mercy Grant came to be, thanks to the support of the Sisters of Mercy. After that, I searched for more donations from women who believe in the true value of education, and this improved our opportunity to offer more resources for the young ones.” For Gaston, the environment that CSM offers to its students is unique: “Because they discover their true personality since they’re encouraged to work as volunteers in anything that the community needs while, at the same time, transforming them into leaders.” Whether in careers related to biology, psychology, math, business or even sports, “Young Latinas, most of them immigrants, are very special and they’re distinguished for working hard to be successful, so that they can give a little back and help their parents for everything they do for the whole family.” Unfortunately, Gaston explained, statistics still show that many Latina girls do not graduate from high school and, therefore, never go to college. “This is why our president (Dr. Maryanne Stevens), looked for a way to secure a program so that high school students could be properly motivated to improve their daily life and their professional development.” That’s how the Latina Summer Academy was born in 2002: “At first we collaborated with the Chicano Awareness Center (now the Latino Center of the Midlands), and afterwards we started to work on our own. In the beginning, there were only 9 students in the program, but when I became the principal for the academy in 2006, I set myself a goal of getting thirty 11th graders and maybe another

one from 12th grade in the program. Today, I’m very happy to report that the program grew so much that last year we received over 100 applications, and we selected 81 to be part of the program.” The Latina Summer Academy offers a great look into what life will be like during college at CSM, since students in this program live for a week in the dorms at the school, and they also participate in classes on subjects such as science, technology and art, along with taking part in several sports activities. “It’s a perfectly structured program and the girls have a lot of fun by starting their day with great classes such as Zumba, swimming lessons or even some on personal defense. Merryellen Schulz works on creating very interesting curricula, and every year great women like Antonia Correa, Linda Garcia, Tony Hernandez and Jasel Cantu, to name a few, help us with our wide range of presentations and projects.” Young Latinas from cities such as Columbus, Lexington, Hastings, Crete, Grand Island, Fremont and Soux Sioux City arrive at Omaha to enrich their lives: “And over the past 4 years we’ve also received students from Kansas City (Missouri), and lately we’ve also had some students from Des Moines (Iowa). Most of them are Mexican, but we also have girls from other countries.” To enter the program, there is only a single $25 that needs to be paid. “But if they can’t do this, there are several agencies that help us by covering said fees, and the cost for the Academy itself is completely covered thanks to donations.” In 2014, the Academy will take place from June 22 to the 27, and the main theme will be “What you eat matters: the science of nutrition and exercise.” “Those who participate will analyze the nutritional value of meals around the world, as well as the impact they have on our body,” said Gaston, “Because, as women, we know the great responsibility inherent in taking care of a family.” Along with part of the college’s staff, as well as of the actual students who help with planning the activities and who also act as chaperones, the girls who are part of this program will participate in a couple of field trips to locations related to the main topic, as is the case of a farm. “They will have a great time because we will also be able to work along with members of Latinas Unidas, as well as with parents, and there will also be a small prom and a graduation ceremony. What matters the most is that they will leave here valuing their culture, as well as the fact that they are women and that they are Latinas.” Maria Luisa Gaston Latino Community Outreach College of Saint Mary 7000 Mercy Road Omaha, NE 68106 402.399.26.11 mgaston@csm.edu | csm.edu
