here is a new king of the jungle. Staff installed a 20,000-pound Olmec head at Lied Jungle at the Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium on Thursday. It's a gift from Xalapa, the sister city of Omaha in Mexico, and it's called "El Rey" . The head is a replica of Olmec Colosal Head No. 1 , one of more than a dozen basalt sculptures found in the Mexican state of Veracruz in the mid-twentieth century. The stones date from at least 900 BC The Association of Sister Cities of Omaha worked with the City of Xalapa and the zoo to facilitate the transfer. The transport was paid by Xalapa, and the discharge and installation were covered by the zoo. The stone is located on the ground floor of the jungle, surrounded by vegetation. "We position it that way, as a sense of discovery," said zoo director Dennis Pate. The Olmec head is one of nine replicas in the United States, according to the zoo. The zoo plans to hold a formal dedication in May.

TEMPORARY PROTECTED STATUS CANCELLED While DREAMers Still in Limbo BY CHERIL LEE

T

PS stands for Temporary Protected Status. Shane Ellison, Deputy Executive Director and Legal Director, explained, “TPS is a form of protection created by Congress that is designed to offer refuge to nationals of certain countries where the conditions pose a danger to personal safety due to ongoing armed conflict, environmental disasters, or a similar basis.” Temporary protected status allows recipients to work legally and reside in the US without being deported. Unfortunately, though the basis for granting TPS was created by Congress, Ellison said the discretion to exercise that authority is given to the Secretary of Homeland Security. “Under the Trump administration, TPS designations have been terminated for four countries: El Salvador, Haiti, Nicaragua, and

6

Sudan. TPS is set to expire for nationals of these later in 2018 and into 2019,” he said. Sergio Sosa, Executive Director of the Heartland Workers Center said, “In November of last year, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson issued a letter to acting DHS secretary Elaine Duke that TPS was no longer needed in Central America or Haiti. TPS recipients from all these countries who were designated are being affected and now face an uncertain future.” The number of people affected by the Trump administration’s decision to end TPS is close to 250,000. Ellison explained, “Most of these individuals have resided in the U.S. for nearly two decades and have established significant ties to the U.S. Once the sunset dates pass, absent another option under

| COVER STORY | Del 1 al 8 de Marzo del 2018 |

the law, they will lose their ability to remain lawfully in the U.S. with work authorization.” The results of this action will mean disruption to employers who rely on these workers. Ellison pointed out this will also be extremely destabilizing to families with TPS recipients. He said there are no good choices for those affected, “They are being forced to consider now whether to return to a violent country, break up their family, or become undocumented by remaining in the U.S.” So what about DACA? Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) was granted to young individuals who were brought to the United States as children on or before June 15, 2007, before reaching age 16. DACA recipients must be in school or have a high school diploma or GED certificate. DACA allows students to work and reside in the U.S. legally without fear of deportation. Right now, DACA is set to expire in March and many young people’s futures are uncertain. “Congress and the President now hold in their hands the fate of 800,000 Dreamers who call this country their home. There is a lot of uncertainty due to a lack of action from the government to pass legislation that allows these young people to stay here or gain a path to citizenship,” said Sosa. According to Ellison, individuals whose DACA was set to expire between September. 5, 2017 and March 5, 2018 were allowed to seek renewal prior to October 5, 2017. Apart from those who had already filed, everyone else lost their ability to seek renewal as of September 5. Additionally, all individuals who would have become eligible to apply after September 5 are no longer eligible to apply. “The end of DACA will affect nearly 800,000 young people. Beginning in early March 2018, they could begin losing their DACA at about rate of 1,000 per day,” said Ellison And he said while there have been preliminary injunctions issued temporarily preventing the Trump Administration from effecting its rescinding of DACA, this is only a temporary fix. It is imperative for Congress to act in order to provide a long-term solution. “People are very discouraged by the steady drum beat of antiimmigrant news. With the end of DACA and scheduled sunset of TPS for the above countries, the current administration is on pace to take away status for more than a million hard-working immigrants who currently have legal permission to remain and lawfully work in the U.S.,” Ellison said. For their part, the Heartland Workers Center has many young people and leaders in the community that are working hard to advocate legislation that benefits and protects immigrants, who contribute so much to the community. “We are also currently working on building a “Wall of Hope” to share the stories of DACA and TPS recipients as well as other immigrants and refugees. There is a lot of negative rhetoric about immigrants in the country right now and we want to allow people to learn about the stories of real people who are being affected and have contributed so much to our communities,” Sosa said. NEBRASKA AMONG HIGHEST INCREASES IN ICE ARRESTS

NEBRASKA ENTRE LOS MAS ALTOS EN ARRESTOS POR ICE

According to a new study released last week by the Pew Research Center, arrests of undocumented immigrants made by U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) climbed to a three-year high in fiscal year 2017 – and the three states who saw the largest increases in arrests were Florida, Oklahoma and northern Texas. Next on the list were the northern midwestern states of Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota. The percentages of surging ICE arrests were rated as follows: Florida – 76 percent; Oklahoma and Northern Texas – 71 percent; Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota – 67 percent. ICE made a total of 143,470 arrests in fiscal 2017, a 30% rise from fiscal 2016. The surge began after President Donald Trump took office in late January. From his January 20 inauguration to the end of the fiscal year on September 30, ICE made 110,568 arrests, 42% more than in the same time period in 2016. Last year, President Trump issued an Executive Order to establish the administration's immigration enforcement and removal priorities. The order expanded the ICE resulting in the highest number of administrative arrests in the past three fiscal years. Among ICE arrestees in 2017 with prior convictions, the most common criminal conviction category was driving under the influence of alcohol, 59,985 convictions, or 16% of the total, followed by possessing or selling “dangerous drugs” such as opioids, 15%. For ICE arrestees with pending criminal charges in 2017, general traffic offenses topped the list of most common charges, 24,438, or 17% of all charges. For more information go to Pew Research Center, Fact tank, news in numbers, “Ice Arrest went up in 2017”, at www.pewresearch.org.

SENATORS FISCHER AND SASSE REACT TO IMMIGRATION VOTES The Senate left hundreds of thousands of "Dreamer" immigrants in limbo last Thursday, rejecting rival plans that would have spared them from deportation and strengthened the nation's border security. Also defeated was a plan by a bipartisan group of senators who offered a compromise that would have shielded the young immigrants, financed President Donald Trump's demands for money to build his coveted border wall with Mexico and tightened restrictions on legal immigration in general. Eight Republicans joined most Democrats in backing that plan, but it fell short after the White House threatened a veto and GOP leaders opposed it. Sen. Deb Fischer supported the proposal favored by Trump, nothing that “my top priority has always been border security.” “The measure I supported today would help secure our nation by constructing a border wall system, including physical fencing, radar and other technologies,” she said Sen. Ben Sasse voted against both immigration reform proposals. “I ran as a conservative and I’ll vote as a conservative,” he said. “That means rejecting today’s left-of-center proposals. “There may still be a constructive path forward with a much simpler legislative package that both protects kids who were brought here through no fault of their own and finally secures the border,” Sasse said.

More than 100 DREAMers lose their protected status every day. Nearly 1,000 will lose protected status everyday after March 5. The Heartland Workers Center and advocate organizations said there is a solution. Call Senator Fischer and Sasse to tell them to keep families together by passing a clean Dream Act now. Sen. Fischer: 202.224.6551; Sen. Sasse: 202.224.4224.

responsible on capitol hill, I’d stare them down and say we are everything you want in the future,” the performers said. “People who are ambitious, people who are intelligent, people who are going to be loyal, people upholding the values and structure of our society.” Following the performance, a panel was held to discuss the end of DACA and what it would mean for local DACA recipients. Dania Cerbantes Ayala arrived to the United States at the age of six. After graduating from Omaha South High School, she received a full-ride scholarship to College of St. Mary, where she is in her senior year pursuing a Bachelor of Science in nursing and a Spanish minor. “The end of DACA for me first and foremost would mean the the destruction of the dream I have,” Cerbantes Ayala said. “My parents sacrificed absolutely everything from their last

dime and their lives to come to the Untied States, so with DACA ending it would just kind of be a slap in the face and a closed door. Because they gave everything to pursue the American dream for my little brother and I, that would be the first thing.” Cerbantes Ayala has been working with oncology patients as a patient care technician at the Buffet Cancer Center for the past six months. She said that another impact of the DACA program ending is that she won’t be able to continue her education. “This documentary shows what DACA is and it humanizes the word DACA. It is able to put a face to a term and for people to be able to understand that we are not just these extraordinary human beings,” Cerbantes Ayala said.
