Heartland Healing TV

H

eartland Healing was officially launched in November, 1994. The mission remains the same: to inform and educate about holistic and natural alternatives to the conventional Western model of techno-pharmaceutical medicine. That has grown to include an emphasis on staying healthy by working with nature rather than subjugating nature to our fancies. In other words, adding natural foods and lifestyle to the mix.

Still, the Spirit, Mind, Body connection is a focal point.

Over the years, projects to further our goal have been many and varied. With The Reader as a partner, Heartland Healing published the print edition of the Healing Arts Directory from 1997 through 2004 and Heartland Healing Magazine from 2004 through 2010. Additional endeavors include founding the Village Pointe Farmers Market (2006-present), website development and content management (1999-present), expositions and convention presentations, individual mentoring and teaching classes, committee work too often to number and from 1995 through 2005, a weekly Public Access television show. That program followed a simple interview format in nearly all cases. Some of the half-hour shows were tedious at best, being moderated by a fairly inexperienced host (me) and not much more than talking heads. But the need to inform the public of the availability of options to drugs and surgery was far more necessary in the pre-google era.

Recently, we’ve been digitizing and editing some of the analog tapes from that PATV series. Some are fairly interesting. One of the early ones has been viewed over a thousand times. As we expand the library, more will be added. Following is a catalog of what is on YouTube at the Heartland Healing Center channel (link on HeartlandHealing.com).

Show No. 1: Gandharva Veda Performance. Gandharva Veda ragas are based on harmony with the energies of nature. They represent the healing power of music. Show No. 2: Gandharva Veda Performance. This selection features Gandharva Veda music, a healing form of raga. The raga presented in this video is specifically attuned to the evening energy of nature. Ragas are intentional music and in their healing forms, relate to the energies (doshas) ascribed to certain times of the day and night.

Show No. 3: A Course in Miracles. Omaha native Scott Kotzen took over hosting duties on this segment to interview me about A Course in Miracles. Kotzen is

a student of the Course. It is edited from a 1996 broadcast. The program is an overview of the basics of ACIM from a Teacher standpoint, exploring some of the analogs to other thought systems and how ACIM provides an alternative that is still linked to tradition.

Show No. 4: Dean Ornish Heart Disease Reversal Program. An interview with renowned cardiologist Richard Collins, M.D. discussing how to reverse heart disease, repair blocked arteries without drugs, surgery or invasive technology. The Dean Ornish Program uses yoga, diet, meditation and group support to heal the whole body, including the heart. The program has been thoroughly researched and has a success rate above that of bypass and angioplasty - all without surgery or drugs. The segment covers Dr. Collins’ work and description of how the program initially began in Omaha.

Show No. 5: Dean Ornish Heart Disease Reversal Program, Part Two. Interview with Scot Stangl regarding the Dean Ornish Heart Disease Reversal Program that was initiated in the Midwest with the support of Mutual of Omaha Insurance.

Stangl was the point man for the Ornish program while he was at Mutual. He describes how a corporate insurance giant came to embrace an alternative to conventional medical approaches to heart disease. Interview from 1995.

Show No. 6: Astrology, Metaphysics and the Esoteric. Astrologer, artist and musician MoJoPo (19462013) is the guest of Heartland Healing TV describing initial steps to understanding astrology. From an October, 2002 taping. As one viewer noted, it is a valuable insight to the genius of the late MoJoPo. During discussion, MoJoPo comments on some of his personal influences and areas of study as well as describing a way of looking at astrology as a logical form of enlightenment.

As time permits, additional programs will be added. Some potential topics include crystal healing, acupuncture, tai chi demonstrations, yoga for children, a panel discussion with six prominent Omaha area physicians about the promise and advance of holistic medicine as it becomes more commonplace. Other topics include the controversy about vaccines and their dangers and questions about efficacy, the application of chiropractic for overall wellness, prayer as a means of direct healing, the ancient archetypes of reiki and their symbols. A variety of other topics will be added.

Meanwhile, on another front, Heartland Healing has been active in the planning stages of the seventh consecutive annual Omaha Health Expo which opens at the CenturyLink Center April 12. t’s a little challenging to ask people about the best place for fish & chips smack in the middle of Lent because everyone wants to sway the subject toward their favorite place to go for a Friday night fish fry. I’ve never been to a fish fry (not from lack of wanting – I’ve just never made it to one), but since these only last during Lent, I need to know about where to go the rest of the year. Where do people go for fish and chips, you know, on a Tuesday in November?

I did manage to get some opinions out of people after I assured them that yes, I fully intend to someday visit a fish fry during Lent, and would they please stop changing the subject and tell me what their favorite place for fish & chips is? In fact, once I asked enough

Sara Andringa went against the popular opinion and instead cast her vote for Lazlo’s Brewery & Grill, which has locations in both Lincoln and Omaha. Their fries, I’m assuming, are better than average, otherwise Sara probably would not have so emphatically stated that this is the best place in town to get fish & chips. So if you try their fish and chips and decide you don’t like the chips, blame Sara, not me.

“Dundee Dell still serves up a great fish and chips,” says Mary Beth Ehlers. “Just went there yesterday and it was so good!” Kristi DeHaai also agrees, simply answering my question with: “Dundee Dell.”

No further explanation needed, apparently, when it comes who offers the best fish & chips in town.

I mention this place for a couple reasons. The first reason is because I’ve had several people recommend this place for their fish and chips to me long before I ever started researching fish & chips. The second reason is because this place seems to be perpetually on Groupon, so if you can score some good fish & chips without paying full price, I think that’s worth mentioning. If you have a look at their menu, they too claim to offer “famous” fish, but I suppose there has to be some truth there since so many people have told me I need to go there and taste their food.

By the way, if you decide that you want to go the fish fry route, Kyle Tonniges says, “During Lent, the Holy Name fish fry on Fridays is always an option.”

Any other night, though, give one of these places a try. After all, the urge to eat fish and chips can happen outside of Fridays during Lent, right? ,

Sundays, 9 p.m. (HBO) With “Beavis and Butt-head,” Mike Judge established himself as the bard of mumbling, antisocial, allAmerican nerds. But Judge tops himself with “Silicon Valley,” which locates the nerve center of modern-day nerd culture in the San Francisco area’s tech industry.

Our hero is, at first glance, anything but heroic. Richard (Thomas Middleditch) is a shoe-gazing introvert toiling for an oppressive tech company while living in a pathetic startup “incubator” with four fellow misfits. Like everyone else, these guys are working on apps that could make them rich — or, as it’s fashionable to say in Silicon Valley, that could “make the world a better place.” At the bottom of the totem pole, Richard rolls his eyes at the pretentious personalities above him, including his self-aggrandizing boss (Matt Ross) and a renowned venture capitalist (Christopher Evan Welch). But by chance, Richard’s compression algorithm comes to their attention, and they get the idea that it could earn them billions — I mean, that it could “make the world a better place.” In the blink of an eye, Richard is elevated to kingly status. That’s the subject of Silicon Valley: nerds on the throne for the first time in human history. In Judge’s view, they’ll be no less noxious than the grunting tyrants previously on the throne.

“Silicon Valley” is a brilliant comedy of manners that will shed light on our techie future and — dare I say it — make the world a better place..

Since the early ’90s, Simon Joyner has publicly strummed a guitar and belted out poignant lyrics as if he was channeling Bob Dylan himself. A major influence on fellow Omaha musician Conor Oberst, Joyner also caught the attention of Beck, who cited a Joyner album as one of his top 10 favorites in a Rolling Stone interview. Although he remains in stealth mode, he’s always creating music.

On Saturday, Joyner plays with New Bums, a folk duo comprised of Donovan Quinn and Ben Chasny. “I know both Ben and Donovan from different bands of theirs,” Joyner says. “I put out a record on my Grapefruit label by Ben’s other band, 200 Years, and Donovan and I were label-mates when his band The Sky Green Leopards and I were both on Jagjaguwar. So, we go back a ways and all of us are fans of each other’s music. All three of us have certain darker folk and rock preoccupations and probably many of the same favorite records in our record collections influencing our music. I’m very excited about the show, I think fans of mine will appreciate what they do and vise versa.”

In the fourth-season premiere, warring factions compete for the Iron Throne in the medieval-ish realm of Westeros. The Lannisters hold power at the moment, but they have plenty of rivals in fuzzypelt fashions. The episode offers fans all the skin and slaughter they’ve come to expect. HBO is asking reviewers not to give away plot points, but that won’t be hard for me. I don’t closely follow the series, so the many characters, clans and ancient resentments are almost impossible to understand. At its worst, “Game of Thrones” is like a Renaissance

Faire with decapitations. The dirty gray palette grows tiresome, as does the torture porn dressed up with swords and steeds. But for me the saving grace is Peter Dinklage, who brings much-needed humor as a Lannister married to a rival Stark.

Conversing with his bride, he delivers the best line of the week — a droll commentary on “Game of Thrones” itself — with perfect understatement: “Your mother, I admired her. She wanted to have me executed, but I admired her….”

J

osiah Wolf answers the phone after teaching a drum lesson, to whatever lucky person, ready to talk. As drummer for indie hip-hop group Why? there’s a lot of down time when they aren’t touring, so he takes odd jobs to keep himself busy—and apparently doesn’t mind doing the occasional interview. Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, Wolf and his brother Jonathan “Yoni” Wolf grew up listening to various hip-hop groups like A Tribe Called Quest and singers like Bob Dylan, which is a direct correlation to the style of music they make together now. Part hip-hop, part folk, Why? teeters on that fine line between hipster friendly folk and classic hip-hop music. The last time Why? performed at The Waiting Room was in 2012 and the group had grown from three core members to a group of six, including Josiah’s wife Liz Hodson. It was the first tour they attempted to incorporate two drummers, something that took some polishing to perfect.

“A lot of the preparation that went into our shows was about having the two drummers,” Wolf says. “At one point, Yoni and I decided we would like to use two drummers. So we found this guy Ben Sloan who was playing in another band and basically took him away from that, which was tough at first, but we’re all friends now. Obviously, it was his choice. We didn’t take him.

He decided what he wanted to do. To be honest with you, I wasn’t very happy with the group at first. I had a hard time playing with another drummer who had a full

(and people). However, Alopecia remains an album Wolf can confidently stand behind.

“Alopecia took off because it was the right thing at the right time,” he says. “It was fresh for us, too. All bands go through phases and sometimes you strike a chord, but you keep trying to do other stuff. Sometimes those other things don’t quite come off, but then you hit something else later. It’s all the ebb and flow of anything.

“You just change as a person,” he continues. “People don’t really want the same thing over and over again either. If we did another Alopecia record, people wouldn’t want that. You can’t recreate something and that’s just the way it is. I feel fortunate we had that record. I mean, I like all of our records, but that’s a special record. I really enjoy and it and I’m very proud of it.”

Wolf met singer Liz Hodson in 2002 and she started playing with Why? in 2011. They also formed their own group, Dream Tiger, and often tour as a duo.

“It’s good. It’s also hard sometimes, too I think, but in general it’s a real nice thing,” he says of working with wife Liz. “It’s even harder though when you have to leave someone at home. When your significant other is home, you’re calling all the time but it’s really hard to do that. In the past, it’s ruined other relationships I’ve had or made them grow apart so it’s real nice to work together in that capacity. But it’s tough, too. It’s almost the opposite.

It doesn’t quite work so, yeah, it took two years to figure that out. Now we’re getting tighter and tighter and have become great friends. I’m excited for this new set up.”

Why? was formed in 2004 after Josiah had made the 2,896-mile trek from New York City to Berkley, California to join his brother. They signed with the Los Angeles-based independent label, Anticon Records, in 2005 and released their debut album, Elephant Eyelash, shortly after.

“I had been in New York City since 2000,” he explains. “I had a hard time making money doing music there. I did some good reading and listening to music on the train, but I was having a hard time finding my direction, which is why I ultimately moved to California to work with Yoni.

“A lot of Anticon guys were moving out there at the time,” he adds. “I guess Sole [formerly of Anticon] was first to move out there, I think. My brother moved to California right after I had left for New York. When I got an offer to play with his Reaching Quiet band, I accepted that, toured in 2002, had some success, and so I decided to move out there in January 2003 to play with him.”

In 2008, Why? released their sophomore effort, Alopecia, which became a fan favorite and critically acclaimed success. While Alopecia is the album most people cite when talking about the group, Why?’s subsequent albums, 2009’s Eskimo Snow and 2012’s Mumps, Etc., boldly display their growth as musicians

Sometimes you need space from each other and we don’t get it sometimes. The hardest part, too, is not getting time for just the two of us. It’s like everybody is always around. I actually like touring with just the two of us. That’s fun. We’ve done that before with our other project. It’s good though. We have a good time. Musically, I love playing with her. She has a beautiful voice.”

In addition to the talented Hodson and her husband, Yoni Wolf is often heralded as an incredibly gifted songwriter. He writes cryptic and often poetic lyrics, and it takes a bit of brain muscle to decipher his words. Whatever subject matter he’s addressing, he does it with an almost buried eloquence.

“In college, I know Yoni was influenced by one of his professors in poetry class,” he says. “He hasn’t had any formal training; he just really fell in love with writing.”

As Why? gets ready for an opening slot for of Montreal, Wolf admits the group really isn’t touring in support of any new material—yet.

“We aren’t really touring in support of anything necessarily,” he confirms.” We have the Golden Ticket EP [2013], but the real reason is we got an offer to play a festival so we booked a little tour around that. We’re working on new music right now. We had a great meeting about it last night, although there’s no release date.

We just started writing now. I think it’s going to be really different from the last one. We’ll see how it goes.” ,

he quarter ended yesterday, which means it’s time for a review of First Quarter 2014 albums. For my money, there’s already been more good albums released in the first three months of this year than in all of 2013. With that in mind, I’m limiting these write-ups to recommendations. Here goes…

Top of the list is the new Beck album, Morning Phase (Capitol/Virgin EMI). Marketed as a return to the serene balladry heard on Beck’s 2002 stylistic breakthrough Sea Change, the description couldn’t be more accurate. In fact, it sounds so much like Sea Change you might think Beck was trying to imitate himself, right down to the chiming keys on opening track “Morning” that (almost) matches the chiming keys on Sea Change opening track “The Golden Age.” Both records have an under water (or under sedation) atmosphere that’s endlessly soothing. It’s the lyrical themes on Morning Phase that set it apart.

Unlike Sea Change’s themes of loss / regret, Morning Phase is downright hopeful, or at the very least accepting. The record is never less than sonically gorgeous, but forced to choose between the two, I’d take Sea Change every time, which (I suppose) says more about me than the records.

Another favorite: Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, Wig Out at Jagbags (Matador). The music (and style) doesn’t stray far from Malkmus’ usual slacker indie formula of laidback arrangements centered on his rather narrow, unadorned, mid-40s adolescent vocals. Like the best of Pavement, there’s plenty of wonky jam moments and odd time shifts to keep you guessing. The highlights: That amazing trombone solo on “J Smoov” and the “Portlandia”-esque observations in “Cinnamon and Lesbians.” At times Malkmus both lyrically and musically, reminds me of very early Steely Dan, back when Steely Dan was a rock band and not a yacht-rock jazz-fusion project.

Malkmus is the Gen X version of Donald Fagen.

After a landmark performance on “Late Night with David Letterman” that Dave turned into an Internet meme, as well as a handful of talked-about performances at South by Southwest, Future Islands is poised to become the break-out band of 2014. Singles (4AD) is proof the band is more than just Samuel T. Herring’s bitchin’ dance moves. Factory Records / New Order has been tossed around as a comparison, but the most accurate nod goes to ’90s Brit R&B act Fine Young Cannibals for similarities in beat and vocal buoyancy. But lyrically, Herring’s take on love and life are more honest, personal and real than anything Roland Gift could ever dream of.

And though the CD doesn’t come out until next week (the vinyl was released weeks ago), it’s not too early to say The Faint’s first album in six years, Doom

Abuse (SQE Records), not only is good, it’s Blank Wave Arcade good. As a whole, the record is more immediate than any previous Faint record, and by that I’m talking about their no-nonsense, straight-forward approach to each track. I read that unlike previous studio marathons, the band got in and got out quickly on this one — no fucking around, no over-thinking — and it shows. The arrangements at times can be acidic and brash, but the album still has classic Faint dance moments (“Evil Voices,” “Loss of Head”) that will get the crowd jumping every time. Welcome back, boys.

Speaking of local artist releases, the debut album

by Josh Hoyer and the Shadowboxers (self-released) would sit well next to albums by funk/soul maven Sharon Jones + the Dap-Kings, though Jones’/Dap-Kings’ sound is more ’60 traditional/revivalist than Hoyer’s modern take on the genre. Jones is an accepted commodity among indie-music followers (and for good reason); Hoyer deserves the same acceptance since his stuff is just as dirty, just as authentic in its own way.

The new album by local heroes Brad Hoshaw and the Seven Deadlies, Funeral Guns (self release), left me scratching my head. The production is heavy handed at times, with organ and layered harmonies that echo El Lay recording studios circa 1975 (to some, that’s a plus). But no studio excess can hide quality songwriting, highlighted by the title track, guttural heart-stopper “New Tattoo” and Kyle Harvey cover “It Falls Apart” that showcase Hoshaw’s ghosty voice as well as Matt Whipkey’s blistering, glowing guitar solos. Riveting stuff.

Former Brimstone Howl frontman John Ziegler’s new project, The Lupines, also scored a Q1 highlight with their debut EP Over the Moon (Speed! Nebraska). The sneering, fuzz-toned garage rock was tailormade for your next backyard barbecue and/or PRB beer bash killing spree. Other notable local Q1 local releases include Cowboy Dave’s boot-scootin’ Driven Man; Buck Bowen’s secular hip-hop LP Truth Before Comfort and Universe Contest’s neo-psychedelic We Are the Rattlesnake.

National albums I beseech you to buy and/or stream post-haste: Axxa / Abraxas, self-titled (Captured Tracks); Angel Olsen, Burn Your Fire with No Witness (Jagjaguwar); new self-titled albums by Warpaint (Rough Trade) and St. Vincent (Republic); Jeremy Messersmith, Heart Murmurs (Glassnote); Mogwai, Rave Tapes (Sub Pop); Dum Dum Girls, Too True (Sub Pop) and The Hidden Cameras, AGE (Evil Evil), which is the best “gay church folk” record Depeche Mode never made.

And I almost forgot one of my favorite albums of Q1 2014: Lost in the Dream by Philly band The War on Drugs (Secretly Canadian). It’s been compared to Tears for Fears and Springsteen. To me it sounds like Tom Petty singing over Avalon-era Roxy Music.

Lush, and stone-cold beautiful. Get it. In fact, get all of these... ,

n The Metro is not new to advocacy art. From institu-

tions such as the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts and the Kaneko to individuals like Scott Blake, raising public awareness and advocating for social change is a vital part of their mission on behalf of the community.

Recent endeavors such as Bemis’ Flock House Project and Kaneko’s upcoming Heartland 2050: Shape Our Future exhibition, April 14, to the more outré installations and campaigns of Blake, are further proof that contemporary art has out-grown the irony of postmodernism and is firmly entrenched into what some critics have called metamodernism.

But even if some of our local “critics” and patrons lament that what they see in metamodernism is more advocacy, performance and slam than art or poetry, one local artist has firmly entered stage two in his personal campaign advocating for the community, especially in the neighborhoods of North Omaha, without abandoning his considerable art skills or vision.

One year ago, Watie White, an Omahan multimedia artist completed a successfully ambitious public art installation on North O’s Emmett Street in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity. Called All that ever was, always is, it featured paintings in the windows of a condemned property that were alleged reenactments of the home’s various dwellers and owners based upon salvaged archival material, research and gossip. It was, aesthetically, a startling revelation amidst a street of other properties, though not all, in similar condition.

Though the house was eventually demolished, White salvaged the paintings in their window frames or casings and went on to have successful showings of such, including one at Creighton University’s Lied Gallery. In 2013, I wrote in a review of the street installation: “Anyone familiar with White’s oeuvre, (knows) truth is a kaleidoscopic mix of fact, perception, interpretation and myth with a capital M.” As evidenced by past series, Pulp, Stolen and Verbatim, White has proven to be not only one of the most versatile artists in this area but one of the most consistently creative, reinventing himself as he goes. One motif continues to unite all his work; a virtual anthropological zeal to reveal the human condition in all its diversity, as expressed in tradi-

tional media using realist-based formal language.”

The full review is at Demo Graphics, but I made the point that White was not being judgmental, and in the processes’ completion, sometimes you have to raze the past in order to raise consciousness, at least on a humanistic level. Now in stage two, White, in collaboration with two other well-known area artists, Peter Cales and Tim Guthrie, is transforming two more houses on Emmett Street scheduled for demolition by Habitat for Humanity. Though this may seem redundant, White appears to have developed more of a social conscience.

“The project speaks directly to my mission and passion of creating public art purposefully to enrich communities and benefit a diverse population,” he says in his artist statement. “The objects and images I create…invite neighbors to interact with the discarded parts of the condemned homes and reflect on the significance of their own spaces and stories, both private and public. I also look forward to hosting several events for the public, including a neighborhood block party, outdoor dinners with community residents and city leaders, and discussions looking toward how to improve our community and city.”

So bent is White on community action and sharing in this second stage, he has invited the public via all sorts of media to contribute financially to its success. All that ever was… has already raised an estimated $12,000 toward its goal of $30,000 to cover anticipated expenses and events while on site and for planned travelling exhibitions after its hoped for unveiling in May. That’s right, a real feather in White’s beret was having his project accepted by Hatchfund which, like Kickstarter and Crowdfunding, enables the public financing of artist projects, especially through social media, but with the added benefit of providing matching funds.

You might appreciate the irony of an agency advocating for art enabling an advocacy art installation. But soliciting the community at large to take ownership of its own welfare, even in microcosm, especially with public art, what’s ironic about that?

Cultural Diversity In tribe-controlled areas of India, children who disrespect their families by marrying outside their castes are still, occasionally, put to death despite strong national laws. Injudicious: (1) James Degorski, 41, serving life in prison for a cold-blooded mass murder during a botched restaurant robbery in Palatine, Ill., in 1993, was awarded $451,000 by a jury recently after a prison guard punched him in the face, necessitating complex surgery. Said a parent of one of Degorski’s victims, “If broken bones are worth a half-million, how much are (the seven victims’) lives worth?” (2) Former star soccer goalie Bruno Fernandes de Souza, 28, serving 22 years in prison in Brazil for the murder of his girlfriend and feeding of part of her body to his dogs, was granted work-release in March by prison officials -- with the “work” assignment being to play soccer for a Brazilian pro team that, upon learning of the rehabilitation law, signed him to a contract and urged his release.

The Cutting Edge (1) Among the filings published in November by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office was Google’s 2012 application covering a throat tattoo -- actually a mobile skin “microphone” with lie-detecting capability, presumably to encourage truthfulness from people as they speak. The application explains how to couple an electronic skin tattoo to a mobile device, using “flexible substrate.” (2) Among the “secrets” revealed recently on a BBC television special on South America’s beauty-queen obsession was one by Ms. Wi May Nava, first runner-up for Miss Venezuela 2013. Nava had a patch of plastic mesh sewn onto her tongue to create so much pain when she ate that she was forced to stick to liquids.

Fine Points of the Law An Iowa administrative law judge ruled in February that it might be reasonable to accidentally damage

a stubborn vending machine that ate your money -- but not by commandeering a forklift, raising the vending machine 2 feet off the concrete floor, and slamming it to the ground to dislodge the reluctant candy bar (a Twix). Consequently, Robert McKevitt, fired recently over the incident

by Polaris Industries in Milford, Iowa, was deemed not entitled to worker compensation. (McKevitt admitted picking up the machine with the forklift, but said he just shook it and then set it down gently.)

In November, a New York appeals court approved a Rockland County judge’s jury instructions, which had resulted in the jury’s absolving Brittany Lahm of fault when she flipped her car on the New York Thruway, killing one passenger and injuring others. Lahm was driving friends home from the beach when one passenger unexpectedly unfastened Lahm’s bikini top, leading her to stretch her arms to re-tie it, which caused her to lose control of the car.

The judges ruled that the jury could (and ultimately did) consider that Lahm faced an “unforeseen emergency” and was not negligent. (The only fatality in the crash was the original unfastener.)

Life Is Too Long Among the websites whose stunning visual sophistication lies in stark contrast to their marginal importance in the world is “Carpets for Airports,” apparently still the go-to site for viewing and judging air terminal floor coverings around the world. Singapore’s carpet consists of an indescribably erratic, “psychologically terrifying” design, while Lima’s Jorge Chavez International Airport’s is “muted” and “calming” -- appropriate for the nervous traveler about to experience an Andes mountains take-off. The least ambitious of all, so far, is Denver’s “featureless” nonpattern -- settled on in 2001 after religious fundamentalists objected to the evolution-enabled images on its original carpeting. ,

NOAH AIN’T BIBLE SCHOOL, Y’ALL

n Gather ’round and I’ll tell you the tale of these things called “unions” that fought to protect the common worker from being ground into people paste beneath the boot of Goliath businesses. Or you can just head down to Film Streams (filmstreams.org) April 28 at 6:30 pm for their presentation of John Sayles’ Matewan, a film about one of the bloodiest labor disputes in American history. Together with the Omaha Federation of Labor, the theater will host a post-show panel with various community members. Maybe events like this can help remind people that the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was helping big business convince Americans that unions are the bad guys. n I am in a committed relationship with the show “Community.” We’ve had some great times together (seasons 1-3 and most of season 5) and some bad times (season 4). But I’ve hung in there, and now comes word that creator Dan Harmon is going to stick to his vows: if NBC greenlights season 6, he’s going to make a “Community” movie by any means necessary. You can keep “for better or worse,” if Harmon makes “Six seasons and a movie” a reality, it will be the sweetest act of love I’ve ever received. n If you’ve never seen Phantasm or any of the whackjob crazypants sequels, you really should. They are insane but fun for no real discernable reason. Now, some 16 years after the last sequel, we are going to get the fifth Phantasm movie: Ravager. The crazy part is that director Don Coscarelli already shot the movie before anyone knew it was even going to happen! To most people, all this sounded like gibberish. But to people with an affinity for creepy tall guys and floating death orbs, this is like Christmas!

barren wife, Ila (Emma Watson), preggers in order to continue the human race. At least Shem gets a wife. You think your “middle child” experience sucks? Noah named his second son after lunchmeat—Ham (Logan Lerman)—and won’t let him take a partner onto the ark. Thus, Ham gets tempted by the “man takes what he wants” philosophy of Tubal-cain (Ray Winstone), the leader of the sinners God is about to ixnay. This sets up a cray-cray final act in which Noah actually becomes the villain.

They showed this to church groups. Ha! The studio went to churches and showed devoted followers a movie in which the “hero” contemplates baby murder. Man, those test screening comments have to be so entertaining. This isn’t to say Aronofsky is disrespectful; he isn’t. Redemption comes for all but the unrepentant wicked, and the moral of the parable remains intact. Aronofsky simply focuses on the most uncomfortable idea: following God’s will meant Noah was a partner in global genocide.

Crowe masterfully crumbles beneath that

brother (Seth), strives to live in accordance with God’s will. That gets harder for him when he’s instructed to build a boat, gather two of each animal and watch all of humanity drown.

Actually, God doesn’t surf a cloud to earth and say “Hey, buddy; here’s the plan.” Noah interprets visions that are somewhat unclear.

So you’d think Noah’s wife, Naameh (Jennifer Connelly), would have some questions, but na’ah. She does tell Noah’s grandpappy, Methuselah (Anthony Hopkins), that she wishes her son, Shem (Douglas Booth), could get his

unquantifiable moral weight, while Watson and Connelly do their best to match him. In the midst of asking the deepest religious/ philosophical questions, Aronofsky somehow squeezes in a history of reality from nothingness to present day and whips up a tense final hour in which one life may mean more than the millions killed in previous scenes. Noah is gorgeous, chilling and challenging and, as such, is destined to part audiences like Moses and the Red Sea.

hey gave the guy who made Requiem for a Dream $150 million to make a movie about Noah’s ark. Huh?! In Requiem, writer/director Darren Aronofsky had Jennifer Connelly connect with another woman via an unforgettable shared “experience.” So, if any exec at Paramount claims they didn’t think Noah would end up like this, they are real dumb.

It takes all of five minutes for Noah to deliver a Dikembe Mutombo-like swat to expectations of Sunday school bible study. Six-armed, rockencrusted, giant fallen angels help humans to build thriving cities on a Pangaea-era earth that looks like an alien planet. This is the Book of Genesis by way of Middle Earth. That’s not an accident. While respectful, from the jump, Aronofsky lathers his interpretation with the visual language of mythology and fantasy.

The epic prologue establishes that the descendents of the murderer Cain have spread like a disease, devouring the earth’s resources with vile glee. Only Noah (Russell Crowe), the descendent of Cain and Abel’s lesser known
