Wash Away Sinus Troubles

I

t’s Spring again and time to revisit the use of one of the most practical ways to address seasonal allergies and sinus issues. Nothing bugs me more than watching Western culture take something that has been successful for thousands of years, misunderstanding how it works and then trying to adapt it to our ignorance of the body. Such is the case with the venerable neti pot, used since the early days of ayurvedic medicine, up to 5000 years ago. Now big drugstore chains sell squeeze bottles with premixed solution for nasal irrigation and instructions on how to do it the wrong way. I’ll stick to the time-tested neti pot.

Thousands of years ago, the wise men on the subcontinent of India realized that a regular nose douche with a saline solution would improve the health of the nasal membranes. It keeps the nose and sinuses clean, removes pollutants and allows the nasopharyngeal cavity to function at peak ability. As described in the ancient medical practice known as Ayurveda, the rishis, or Ayurvedic wise men, used a device known as a neti pot. The practice of using the pot is known as jala neti. Though a common part of daily hygiene in other parts of the world, jala neti is only recently catching on with Western culture.

Our nose is a front line of defense. It warms and filters the air we breathe. It traps dirt and diseasecarrying pathogens, leaving behind boogers as it does.

Directly connected to our brain, with millions of sensors to identify malodorous molecules, our nose is an early warning system beyond compare, telling us when something is bad. A bad smell it can tell. The nose knows. And, a flu virus is usually first detected in its mucous membranes.

Our nasal passages and sinuses protect our body.

Like a furnace filter, those nasal passages must be clean and in good shape to do the job. Year round and especially in spring, the nose is assaulted by mold spores, pollen, dry air and debris, challenging the healthy state of our natural filter system.

Tip the snot pot. One way to help the nasal passages stay healthy is to keep them clean. When there’s a gush of mucous, a Kleenex might do. But what about the subtler level; the microscopic particles that pollute our snoot?

Like other internal skin surfaces, the nasal cavity is comprised of moist, soft and warm mucous membrane. It traps intrusive dust particles, bacteria and

other invaders. The membrane is kept moist by the normal secretions of our body. That secretion is slightly salty and the equivalent of what is called a “normal saline solution.” The fact that the fluid inside our body is slightly salty gives a clue to what is appropriate to cleanse our internal membranes. Combining the proper solution with the correct use of the neti pot is an age-old success story.

The Doc Knows For years, our family chiropractor has been telling us about neti.

“It’s absolutely a beneficial regimen,” said Dr. Shawn Schmidt of Omaha’s Natural Health Center, PC. “Especially with the climate we have in the Midwest, there is a tremendous strain on the breathing cavity in general. Many times irrigating with a neti pot and a mild saline solution can get rid of an infection without the patient resorting to some nasty antibiotic.

“Using a neti is relatively easy,” Schmidt noted. “It’s gentle, has little or no side effects and is really easy once you get the hang of it. I have a formula that I recommend that uses simple sea salt and a couple of other things and is very mild but effective.”

Neti is easy. Most of us are initially uncomfortable with the idea of water going up our nose, usually because in the past it’s happened when we haven’t been in control of it (see waterboarding). With jala neti, one tilts the head to the side and gently pours the saline solution in one nostril. The head is tilted forward slightly so that the solution can flow through and out the other nostril.

Taking less than three minutes, it’s easily incorporated into daily hygiene. I prefer the traditional, low, flat neti pot over the bulbous type. Mine is easier to use.

Avoid the Squeeze Using a kit from a drugstore is the last thing I would do. Doing something the wrong way is worse than doing nothing at all. Those squeeze bottles force the liquid under pressure into the nasal passage and it can enter the sinus. Neti experts advise never to force the solution into the sinus.

Let it gently flow past and draw mucous and debris from the cavities. Use only purified water (not tap).

One option is to learn the proper method from an experienced practitioner.

Keeping the nose, sinuses and associated mucous membranes clean and clear makes breathing easier and helps keep life stress-free. The first line of defense against disease deserves a little attention. Many who use neti find a lower incidence of colds, flu, allergies and sinus problems Be well. ,

n a town saturated with bars, bar and restaurant Wilson and Washburn is brimming with potential.

The decor of the bar is dark and warm with a hint of sexy, as images of burlesque dancers are framed on the brick walls. A large wooden apothecary holds shelves of spirits, 24 taps of local and international beers, and two large flat screen televisions. A staircase angles up the back of bar near the kitchen, leading to a lounge area upstairs with a capacity for 50 people, perfect for parties or work functions. Located a block from the Orpheum Theater, Wilson and Washburn is barely on the outskirts of the Old Market, with better bets for parking and avoiding the overspill from the core of downtown.

Owner Jeff Luby and former partner Eric Hochstein opened Wilson and Washburn in late July of 2013. Prior to this venture, Luby tended bar in New York for 15

tense that she be buried under 9 feet of concrete next to her husband, Dan Allen, so that her corpse could rest in peace without the threat of being...resurfaced.

I was more than ready for a drink after that story.

I asked the bartender to make me a drink of his choice with whisky as the main act. Artfully, he measured Bulleit, simple syrup, bitters, chilled coffee and ice together, with the pleasant sound of ice chipping in the shaker as the alcohol forced its way through the cracks. Garnished with an orange peel, the Dirty Wicked ($8.50) is a signature drink of the bar, and a tasty one at that. The chilled coffee marries nicely with the bourbon, though it did get a bit watery towards the end.

Curious about the menu, I asked Ruesch to bring me two items of note, one vegetarian, and one meat.

In no time, he brought out two sandwiches; the House

There have been some recent changes in the kitchen as well. Former Chef Hiomara Van Den Boogaart moved on to open a new establishment in 2013, and has been replaced with Bradley Ruesch, the former sous chef with a polite demeanor and plenty of enthusiasm. “I’ve been here since January of this year,” he said. “I was the former chef at Omaha Tap House, and decided to expand my knowledge of the industry, and I was intrigued by the potential of this menu.”

Omaha history is rich in this place. Wilson and Washburn is named after Anna Wilson, an influential madam, and Josie Washburn, a member of her staff. Luby dubbed this bar “a serious comfort station,” a term formerly used to sugarcoat the word “brothel.” Luby, wellread and eager to share his knowledge on the subject, was glad to give us an overview of Omaha’s outlaw history. Back alley sewer entrances to brothels hid some of Omaha’s most prominent businessmen from prying eyes through the 1800s. In the 19th century, Wilson donated her fortune to the City of Omaha (her 25 room brother was turned into a hospital), under the pre-

Smoked Pulled Pork ($8), and the Beet Burger ($8). “I am so proud of this burger,” said Ruesch. “People who may not like beets get this burger and love it. We also feature beet chips, which are very popular. It’s one of the ways we stay original with a fantastic menu.”

I was surprised to not receive any of the beet chips.

Instead, we had regular potato chips served alongside our sandwiches. The beet burger was tasty. It held together very nicely, thick and chewy just like an actual burger, the red inside reminiscent of a rare patty. This hefty sphere sat atop a pool of house made smoked peanut butter, topped with pickled jalapenos. The flavors blended beautifully, however, the burger itself was a bit dry. Regardless, this dish is an excellent option for vegans who want to enjoy some top notch bar food.

The pulled pork was quite spicy. Smothered in a house made barbecue sauce, the meat was tender and flaky, a delicious combination. This pork was complemented by a layer of fresh coleslaw, giving it an extra crunch.

My only complaint was the potato chips. Stale and anticlimactic, they were the homely companion to otherwise beautiful dishes. The beet chips would have been a much better compliment.

One thing for sure is the staff of Wilson and Washburn are aiming for stellar service, and they are delivering. The brand story is fantastic, and the atmosphere appropriate for fans of craft beer and cocktails. The kitchen is an eclectic mix of past staples and new dishes, a pairing that will take a bit of time to develop.

With the enthusiasm from both owner and chef, this place is sure to continue its growth in the Omaha bar scene. ,

’d like to think that you and I have grown a little closer over the past few months. I’ve shared my tequila adventures with you and I’m confident in saying that I’ve never steered you wrong when it comes to tequila and food. So trust me when I say that you need to make your reservation now to attend the upcoming tequila tasting dinner on Thursday, April 17. This one takes place at the La Mesa on 110th and Maple from 6:00-8:00 in the evening.

The La Mesa tequila tasting I attended last year was a lot of fun. We sampled a bunch of different tequila choices alongside a variety of food and had a blast.

Now that there’s another tequila tasting scheduled, I’m trying to let everyone know that this is an evening they don’t want to miss.

It’s a complete dinner with appetizers, salad, your choice of entrée from a special menu and a dessert. As far as the tequila goes, expect to taste both types of Tequila Cabrito 100% Agave Silver and Reposado along with other Tequila Centinela varieties.

Joining you at the tequila tasting will be Tequila Brand Ambassador Diana Jimenez. This is a lady who probably knows more about tequila than you and me combined, and that’s even if you studied Tequila Science in grad school.

This isn’t her first visit to Omaha from Mexico, and she’s looking forward to the trip. “I’ve been in Omaha before and what I like the most is how kind the people are,” she says. “Everyone is super nice. I feel at home, and I know this will be a fun time and a great experience.”

I asked Diana to tell me what makes Casa Centinela Tequila so special, beyond the obvious fact that it’s really great tequila. “It’s a tequila that’s real,” she says. “It’s still family owned. It’s not owned

by sports people or celebrities. The Hernandez family are tequila producers, doing what they do best. They really care about the products they produce.

The passion, tradition and art of making tequila is their way of life.”

Diana will be at the tasting to help us all to appreciate tequila even more. After speaking with her, I quickly realized I haven’t been drinking tequila in a way to best appreciate it. “Tequila is best when it is served neat, in a champagne flute,” she told me. “Give it a sip and let it sit in your mouth. After you swallow, breath out and it will be a great experience. It will let you appreciate all the great characteristics tequila has.”

I’d have to say that’s much more sophisticated than my typical “down the hatch” technique.

“I’m excited to bring my knowledge to people,” she adds. “The best thing about tequila –besides the amazing taste and great moments it gives you – is the history.”

State Legislature Does the Math, Unveils Health Plan for Poor:

‘Don’t Get Sick’ A

fter falling 6-votes short to end a filibuster against expanding health care to help 66,000 uninsured Nebraskans through a mix of private payments, private health insurance and an expansion of Medicaid similar to Iowa’s plan, Republican state senators said the math just didn’t add up for them.

“Why would we spend $62 million over the next 6 years – barely 1% of the state budget – to get $2 billion in federal money owed to us to help keep health insurance rates low and health care affordable for everyone?” said State Senator Alec Lemming. “That’s a 322% return on our investment on money coming back to Nebraska.

I can’t even imagine keeping more money from the federal government!”

Not to be obstructionists, the senators unveiled a new proposal.

“My colleagues and I are advising families of four making less than $25,000 a year to simply stop getting sick,” said Lemming. With cloned senators nodding emphatically behind him, he explained that it is irresponsible for those without enough money to become ill. “All we’re asking them to do is take personal accountability and not contract any debilitating chronic conditions or fatal diseases,” he argued.

In the same vein as his colleagues’ proposal to end homelessness, titled “Have You Tried Not Being Poor?” and their anti-hunger initiative called “Oh, You’ll Be Fine,” this new health care proposal uses rhetoric in place of any actual plan. “Honestly, I don’t

know why no one suggested ‘not getting sick’ to poor people earlier,” revealed Lemming. He then sneezed and coughed several times before winking and concluding “Don’t worry! I can afford it!”

Before he left, I heard Jesus tell Satan to “really think outside of the box and get inventive,” which doesn’t sound good.

Springsteen Disappointed in Alexander Payne’s Interpretation of Classic Album

D

espite critical acclaim and six Oscar nominations, not everyone is pleased with Alexander Payne’s Nebraska – namely the man whose music inspired the film itself, Bruce Springsteen. The Boss, who originally released his record of the same name in 1982, recently took to Twitter to criticize the director for turning “one of the darkest-themed albums ever released on a major label” into what he could only describe as a “whimsical father-and-son journey.”

When asked if he liked anything about the film, Springsteen responded, “Don’t get me wrong, Alex is a great director, but the only thing he got right here was doing it in black and white.” He later added, “Unless I missed a killing spree or two during one of my concession refills, I’m not sure Mr. Payne even made it past the cover art.”

A fan of Payne’s then reminded Springsteen of a lyric from Used Cars: “Mister, the day the lottery I win/I ain’t ever gonna ride in no used car again.”

Springsteen chalked that up to coincidence. “I just see this as a missed opportunity,” The Boss said in closing, “So many great films have been inspired by music.

In this new sitcom, six attractive young friends (à la “Friends”) deal with marriage, divorce and dating, jealous of each other’s lives. Andi (Majandra Delfino) and Bobby (Kevin Connolly) worry that the excitement has gone out of their relationship; Jules (Brooklyn Decker) falls in love with New Age nut Lowell (Rick Donald); Will (James Van Der Beek) splits from his wife; and Kate (Zoe Lister-Jones) can’t find a man because of her impossibly high standards. The ensemble has chemistry galore. You’d expect great work from TV veterans Connolly and Van Der Beek, but even the less familiar faces know their way around a punch line. Lister-Jones could be the breakout star with her original take on the heartless-businesswoman role. My only reservation is the writing. The sniggering sex jokes make “Friends with Better Lives” feel desperate, as if the producers worried it wouldn’t be hip enough without constant references to boobs and balls. Calm down, guys — with a cast like this, your worries are over.

There is no better way to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s March on Washington than by attending Created Equal: America’s Civil Rights Struggle with a special screening of four films chronicling the history of the civil rights movement. The Durham Museum was one of 473 institutions across the country that was awarded a set of these four films. This event will feature clips from each film and discussions led by area scholars. Friday night’s fundraiser party hosted by Watie White is centered around his collaborative public art project: All that ever was, always is. eresa and I like to go to the cinema at least once a week, specifically on weekends. But lately, the act has become nearly impossible due to the lack of quality films being released.

Last Friday rolled around, and we clicked through our Flixster app and (other than the already soldout Wes Anderson film at Film Streams), the choices were Divergent, Muppets Most Wanted, Mr. Peabody & Sherman, The Lego Movie, 300: Rise of an Empire, Need for Speed.

If the choice is between seeing any of those or getting some Indian take-out and staying home to catch up on the DVR or Netflix, well, it’s pretty simple.

I know it’s become popular these days to call this the “Golden Age of Television,” but the fact is most of the stuff on the major networks is as shitty as anything I remember watching on the tube growing up in the ’80s; maybe more so when you consider “reality television” and garbage like The Real Housewives of… or whatever shitpool the Kardashians are wading through this week (Let me add my voice to the countless that came before me and ask how any of the Kardashians became “stars.” What talent, skill or wisdom made them anything other than shining examples of how to be human garbage?).

And yet, there’s all these TV shows that are hands-down better than anything in the theaters: “House of Cards,” “Game of Thrones,” “Girls,” “The Newsroom,” “Downton Abbey” and the show I’m currently re-watching on HBO On Demand: “True Detective.”

“True Detective” is the best television show I’ve seen in years, and an example of the kind of thing that could only be seen on television. Over the course of eight onehour episodes, we not only see the evolution of an investigation of grisly, ritualistic serial killings that span two decades, but the emotional rise and fall of two central characters, played by the irascible Woody Harrelson and the ever-changing Matthew McConaughey, who’s currently enjoying the best “second act” of any Hollywood star.

“True Detective” combines the eeriness of Silence of the Lambs with the long-form character development

of “The Sopranos.” You simply cannot tell this kind of story in a movie theater. The choice would be to either cut the series down to two hours and remove all the elements that make it special, or break it into three parts and release it over three years (which would never work since the show contains no elves or laser beams) or force audiences to sit in the dark for eight straight hours (which, in this case, isn’t a bad option).

Or air it on HBO or Netflix or whatever cable and/ or Internet-based service you prefer.

I say all this and then you counter with American Hustle or 12 Years a Slave or Dallas Buyers Club. But those films, which clearly target an adult audience, are becoming rare amidst the plethora of adolescent bullshit that clogs today’s marquees. Hollywood’s answer to that criticism is that kids go to the movies, kids are where the money is, and that the grown-ups are more apt to do what grown-ups do: Stay home with their Indian take-out and watch Netflix.

I can’t argue with that. Still, on a Friday or Saturday night I’d rather be sitting in the dark with a few hundred people taking it all in with a picture that’s bigger than life, and without the option of pressing the pause button when I have to go to the bathroom.

*** My editor (not John Heaston, but Teresa, who reads everything before I submit it to The Reader) pointed out that Film Streams is the exception to the Hollywood rule, and she’s right (as per usual). Since Film Streams’ Ruth Sokolof Theater opened in 2007, it has consistently shown quality adult-oriented films and continues to be the obvious alternative to the usual superhero/zombie/coming-of-age bullshit

shown at the multiplexes. We would have seen The Grand Budapest Hotel (now showing exclusively at Film Streams) last weekend except screenings were sold out by the time we made up our minds.

Film Streams also might be evidence of the cinemaviewing age gap. When it first opened as part of The Slowdown complex, I expected the average audience at screenings to be dominated by young midtown and downtown hipsters, the kind of folks I typically run into at indie rock shows. Instead, it’s not uncommon for Teresa and I to be the youngest people in the audience. I wonder if that’s what Film Streams’ visionary founder, Rachel Jacobson, expected when the theater’s curtains first parted.

*** An update on my DuoLingo column from a few weeks ago: I’ve finally given up on the iPhone app that approaches learning to speak a foreign language as if it were just another game like Words with Friends or Candy Crush.

After four months, I made it as far as Level 8 and “Object Pronouns” before I began to fall further and further behind, unable to make it through lessons without “running out of hearts,” the app’s wise old owl teacher ever in tears at my failures, all the while forgetting what little I’d learned in earlier lessons.

The game went from being a fun diversion to being a constant reminder of how stupid I am, how I’m doomed never to speak Spanish.

The idea behind DuoLingo was too good to be true.

Still, the experience left me with that much more respect for those I meet from another land stumbling through our own foreign language. ,

rowing up in a large Catholic family, it makes sense Annie Clark ended up with a stage name like St. Vincent. But there’s more to it than that. The name was taken from a Nick Cave song in which he references “St. Vincent,” the hospital where Welsh poet Dylan Thomas died in 1953. It’s also in honor of her great-grandmother whose middle name was St. Vincent. Whatever the case may be, Clark’s persona has captivated a vast audience and catapulted her to international recognition.

Clark was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, but spent her formative years in Dallas, Texas. After attending the Berklee School of Music for three years, she dropped out to pursue her own musical path. A self-described “musician’s musician,” Clark began performing with The Polyphonic Spree in 2003. She stumbled into a deal with Beggars Banquet Records where she released her debut solo album, 2007’s Marry Me. The immediate and most obvious comparison is Kate Bush, but oddly enough she sometimes seems to channel Alanis Morrisette, especially on her new self-titled album. Half-pop, half-out there, her soaring vocals and complex musical arrangements make for an intriguing listen. Her new level of “fame,” however doesn’t seem to make a difference to her.

“There have been great perks,” Clark says.

“Sometimes a stranger will buy me a drink at an airport bar. Little stuff like that. Generally my dayto-day is pretty much the same. Just busy and working and on tour. And trying to put on the best show possible every night. The level of excitement from fans is a new thing. The people seem to be more excited than ever. And there are more of them. The show is a bit harder hitting than anything I’ve done before. I’ve got a great band. A pretty heavy band at times. It’s sounding really great. It’s me plus three, four, people total.”

As her career has blossomed, Clark packed up her guitar and made the move from Texas to New York City. “I think one of the things I love about New York is that I don’t feel like a freak in New York,” she says. “There are so many people. You can’t afford to be so myopic in New York. I feel like there are a lot of wonderful, likeminded people, artists and musicians. I don’t feel like a freak. Like I kind of did in Texas.”

Clark’s move led to a serendipitous encounter at a 2009 AIDS/HIV charity event at Radio City Music Hall in New York City with Talking Heads’ David Byrne, which led to their second meeting in a thrift shop. After a concert promoter suggested a collaboration, the two got to work and ended up writing an entire album’s worth of material. Subsequently, Clark and Byrne released Love This Giant in 2012, an album well received by fans and critics alike.

“I try to live at the intersection of accessible and lunatic,” she explains. “As far out as David Byrne and I go, we counterbalance that with a memorable melody or something for people to latch on to. I try not to put songs into ill-fitting clothes.”

After touring with Byrne for several months, Clark got busy writing songs for her next solo album within 36-hours of returning home. Simply titled St. Vincent, the album was released on February 25, 2014 and the 11-track effort show-

cases her penchant for writing beautifully honest, heartfelt songs.

“I think I write both prose and lyrics in just the way I think,” she says. “The truth is I haven’t had time in a lot of years, nor made time, to write something outside of the context of music. But thinking about this in terms of lyrics — there are a lot of ways to think about lyrics. I used to be more on the prose side of it.

For example, I wrote this down and it means something to me in this written form and I’ll just sing it, because obviously if it looks good on paper it is going to sound good. But in the new realm of artistry that I’m exploring now, the trick is not for some words just to mean something but for the words to sound good too. So that’s another whole dimension. It has to feel good coming out my mouth. That’s a weird challenge, because it also has to say what I want it to say. It’s like a Rubik’s Cube.”

S T. V I N C E N T GETS UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL

The cover art for St. Vincent is getting attention, too. It’s a photo of Clark’s reinvented self with shockingly grey-lavender colored hair elegantly posing on a pink, polycarbonate throne with a striking glare slapped across her face.

“I just wanted to play with my visual identity more than I had before, because when I look at the artists who I think are really fascinating, and often there’s been a different archetype per record,” she says.”

Like Bowie or someone like Grace Jones who is very like classically beautiful but makes herself look like a freak. What an awesome subversion. And how powerful that can be, and so, very much on a whim, I dyed my hair blond. I intended for it to be blond, but then it was orange, and then it was yellow and it was a lot of really bad colors, but I finally got it to this Daphne Guinness grey.”

The album aesthetic was partly influenced by the ‘80s pop-art-influenced Memphis design movement.

“For the cover, I was inspired by the Memphis design movement,” she confirms. “I just love how the most simple shapes can be turned on their ear slightly and recontextualized. And I was thinking kind of analogous to what I’m trying to do musically. I worked with

y continued from page 5 this guy Willo Perron on the conceiving on the cover and he helped me execute the idea. An archetype of, like, a near-future cult leader started to emerge. I just kept thinking this phrase, ‘The power’s in the pose.’ I knew I wanted to self-title the record, and I thought, ‘Okay, it should appear bold.’ So what does bold mean?

And so we built this crazy Memphis chair and we took a lot of photos in it. And it was interesting to look at the little micro-movements and how they translated to powerful or not powerful. starlet from the ’40s like, golden age of Hollywood, I guess. And then various micro-movements translated so much energetically. Eventually, we ended on what just looked the most powerful and intentional. There was nothing unconsidered about this photograph.

There was nothing sloppy or just a blown out. It was clean and symmetrical and very, very considered. And I’m taking that kind of aesthetic into the live show with the stage design and the set design.”

Clark takes her stage show to the Midwest next week on her extensive tour in support of St. Vincent.

According to Ryan Leas of the Village Voice, “This is how St. Vincent’s new live show begins: in lieu of walkout music, there’s just darkness and reverberating sound boiling in the air above the crowds’ heads, and then there’s one of those ancient computerized voices that already sound like the aged sci-fi markers of a bygone era. ‘Greetings fellow analogue creatures,’ it begins. ‘Please refrain from capturing your experience tonight digitally. Thank you, St. Vincent.’

The allure of this introduction alone is enough to send people running to the door for a live St. Vincent show.

Touring is something just as special for Clark.

“You meet a lot of characters on the road,” she says.

“And in a really great way. I think that’s one of the great things about being on the road. You’re able to have very brief but very meaningful interactions with strangers.

Some bartender you meet in Pendleton, Oregon tells you and your band the crazy stories of her existence. n “What? Drive some 180 miles just to see art? I can’t even get to Lincoln on a regular basis…unless I want to catch a game, of course…and I hear the Sheldon Museum of Art has a fine American collection.”

It does, but someone who considers 50 miles a lot to ask in the name of fine art may find a one-way, two and half hour road trip somewhat formidable. Yet, next April 4-6, many arts patrons from all over the state will converge in Kearney to attend the biennial benefit on behalf of the Museum of Nebraska Art. And, yes, that includes many from the Metro area.

Among them will be Omaha Co-Chairs for the MONA fundraiser, Patrick and Karen Drickey and Chris and Betsy Murphy who, along with up to 47, will travel in a rented motor coach, Saturday, April 5th to attend the dinner and auction and then return same day. He has a special interest in MONA’s mission as he has devoted his Gallery 1510 on Leavenworth St., at that address, to creating exhibition space in Omaha that focuses exclusively on Nebraska artists.

It’s a collaboration that has already experienced two successful shows by invitation including the work of Nebraska artists Milton Wolsky, and Leonard and Jean Thiessen.

“We’re interested in giving MONA a footprint in Omaha to attract attention to its mission and museum in Kearney, “ Drickey says. “More importantly, we want to provide first class gallery space where local and regional artists with limited exhibition options can gain recognition.”

That “footprint” will soon expand from its now 1000 square feet to a planned 10,000 square feet, hopefully this summer. Currently gaining recognition in the former space, and on view by appointment only are two of the 55 artists featured in MONA’s auction, Joe Broghammer and Larry Sosso, both from Omaha.

Broghammer offers new paintings that feature primarily an edgier take on his signature “Flock of Joe” bird collection. Sosso’s work here is more of a retrospective, and if you have forgotten what a fine mark maker he is, call the gallery and come see the fine collection of drawings and prints on view as well as his more familiar and graceful wire sculpture.

Other Omaha artists in MONA’s auction include Justin Bellar, Gary Day, Jun Kaneko, Jess Benjamin, Susan Knight and Corey Broman, among others.

You don’t need to travel to Kearney to see these artists, but it’s seldom that you get the opportunity to see them all under the same roof among their peers, which has always been an extra, added attraction of any major arts auction such as those experienced at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts.

And by attending the auction and any of the other events planned at MONA’s 3-day Spirit: A Celebration of Art in the Heartland weekend, you can join Drickey and company, as well as local museum board members President Elect Jeanne Salerno, Karen Linder and Charles Gifford in supporting what MONA does best: recognizing Nebraska artists’ huge contribution to the Good Life.

San Francisco’s No. 1 Problem

T

he ecology-conscious city (having recently encouraged routine composting of dinner leftovers) is now considering environment-friendly public urinals such as the PPlanter created by engineer Brent Bucknum. Users urinate into a ceramic basin and flush the waste with run-off hand-washing water into a bed of bamboo plants. Bucknum claims minimal maintenance and an odorfree experience, but on the other hand, only a user’s midsection area is blocked from public view -- a concession necessitated by San Francisco’s sour experience with lockable public toilets, which shielded sex acts and crime. (A less-elaborate structure -- the open-air, similarly privacy-challenging “pPod” -- is currently being readied for deployment in the city’s Dolores Park.))

The Entrepreneurial Spirit --- Branko Bogdanov, 58, his wife, Lela, 52, and daughter Julia, 34, were arrested in March and charged in a 10-year shoplifting enterprise run out of their upscale Northbrook, Ill., home, which they allegedly used as a base while prowling stores in states as far away as Florida, stealing high-end toys and jewelry, which they resold on eBay and to their fences. Police estimate the Bogdanovs swiped as much as $7 million worth on their forays -- many items being stashed in Lela’s customized flowing skirts with hidden pockets.

-- A trauma victim arriving at a hospital emergency room but requiring specialized intensive care would usually be transferred promptly to a qualified “trauma center,” whose success rate with such patients is believed to be 25 percent better than that of ordinary hospitals. However, a recent study from Stan-

ford University researchers found that, among 636 hospitals observed, there was a greater reluctance to make the transfer -- if the patient was fully insured. (That is, the authors suggest, there is a tendency for hospitals to hang onto insured patients, even though their outcomes might be worse, but not to similarly hang onto the uninsured -- who are more likely to be properly transferred.)

Science Fair -- Technological Know-How at Work: Hard-core pornography fans are split (according to a January report on Salon.com) on whether they want male actors to use condoms, but California’s Falcon Studios has the technology to serve both audiences. Falcon’s actors wear them, but in some movies those condoms might be digitally “removed” during post-production. The major downside, said one renowned director, is the prohibitive cost -- about $100,000 to re-digitize the estimated 90,000 frames in a typical “low-budget” porno film. The Falcon president said he is trying an alternative -- using clever lighting during filming to de-emphasize the condom’s presence.

-- Security and law enforcement agencies are looking beyond traditional biometric identification techniques (such as the accurate but obtrusive fingerprint and iris scans and unobtrusive yet questionably accurate facial-recognition) and, based on recent laboratory research, are now considering earwax and underarm odors. Work by Philadelphia’s Monell Chemical Senses Center shows that ear secretions may reveal personal identity, ethnicity, health status and sexual orientation, among other information, and researchers at the Polytechnic University of Madrid (Spain) said their work demonstrates that recognizable patterns in body odor remain stable even through disease and diet change (although admitting that even the best odor technology is far inferior to a dog’s nose).

Leading Economic Indicators -- Farming continues to be a noble but grueling existence for rural residents of China, who work for the equivalent of only about $1,300 a year, but in one village (Jianshe, in southwest Sichuan province), farmers have established a co-operative capitalist model, and in January officials delivered residents their annual dividend in cold cash -- the equivalent of about $2.1 million to split among 438 households. Authorities unloaded banknotes in stacks that constituted a 7-foot-high wall of money, requiring villagers to pull 24-hour shifts to guard it.

-- Costs of Spain’s Economic Collapse: (1) London’s Daily Mail reported in March that Spain might have as many as 2,900 recently abandoned “villages” (swaths of land with clusters of houses) deserted by owners forced into cities to find work during the current recession -- and that speculators were buying entire villages at single-house prices and turning them into vacation retreats.

(2) A formal association of sex workers in Barcelona has introduced a four-hour “introduction to prostitution” class for women transitioning from other occupations due to layoffs. Course topics include tax-return help (prostitution is not illegal in Spain) and marketing, as well as sex tricks.

-- News of the Weird has reported recently on the staggeringly large amounts of money to be made by financial trading firms that can execute buys and sells even a split-second before another firm.

The Wall Street Journal reported in January that the “race to zero” (“zero” being trades executed at the speed of light) now involves sophisticated lasers beamed between trading hubs (initially, East Coast data centers, but eventually linking nearly all U.S. stock exchanges) so that a firm’s automatically enacted trades (by self-actuating computer programs) can be further reduced from the current 0.004-second “lag” time.

People With Issues A more ornate, dedicated subset of cross-dressers -the “living dolls” or “maskers” -- was captured for a

British TV documentary in January (and likely to appear on U.S. television soon). “Secrets of the Living Dolls” follows ordinary men (one, a forklift operator by day; another, divorced and 70, whose daughter knows he’s a “doll” but otherwise maintains a “don’t ask, don’t tell” relationship) who come alive several nights a month when they don expensive ($800 to $1,800), tailored, head-to-toe silicone bodysuits that feature breasts and genitalia, to party as young, glamorously dressed women. Two of the men lamented the dolls’ lack of full acceptance into the transvestite or transgender communities -- though much of that distrust may stem from dolls’ use of masks (perhaps similar to the backlash faced by clowns).

Least Competent Criminals Christopher Fulton turned himself in in Midwest City, Okla., in March after seeing a surveillance photo of the robbery of an IBC Bank. He told police he indeed must be the robber, that he saw his body in the bank photo -- although he insisted that his mind had no recollection of it. Police were about to arrest Fulton, anyway, because the robber’s holdup note was written on a blank check with the account holder’s name and address (Fulton’s mom’s) scratched out, except that police-lab technology easily read through the scratch-outs.

Someone has finally found out about my obsession with Cooter from “Dukes of Hazzard.” That was my first thought when I heard that Film Streams (filmstreams.org) is screening Best Kept Secret on Tuesday April 22 at 7 pm.. Turns out that it’s not about my well hidden fetish but, instead, it’s a gripping documentary about a special needs teacher trying to prepare her students for life after high school. Together with the Meyer Foundation for Disabilities and Ollie Webb Center, Inc., the theater is holding a panel discussion after the movie to consider the implications for our community. Look, that’s incredibly important, but even more important is that nobody knows about my Cooter obsession. Wait…

Director David Fincher, who did the impossible when he made social media sophisticated when he filmed The Social Network, wants to tempt fate by re-teaming with writer Aaron Sorkin for a biopic on Steve Jobs. But he has a catch: He’ll only do it if Christian Bale plays Jobs. Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Won’t Bale be too intimidated by the brilliant and nuanced portrayal of Jobs by Ashton Kutcher?” Nah, in order for that to happen, someone would have to tell Bale what an Ashton Kutcher is.

For real though, they’re making a movie version of Jem and the Holograms. Obviously, the guy who directed the last GI Joe movie, Jon M. Chu, will spearhead this important, life-changing adaptation of the 1980s cartoon that sort of defies easy description. Oh, and there’s an open invitation to provide input and audition for the film at jemthemovie.com. Just now I’m realizing how many people I know are going to go there and do that. Not that I will or anything…but Jem is excitement…

o alter a phrase from Twain, who won’t mind because he’s dead, writer/director Wes Anderson repeated history until he figured out how to rhyme. Barring a brief foray into stop-motion animation, Anderson’s oeuvre for the last decade redundantly hit the same notes with the same instruments, producing repetitive, quirky music that hipsters totally liked before you did. Until now.

To alter a phrase from Batman, who won’t mind because he’s not real, The Grand Budapest Hotel is the movie audiences deserve and the one Anderson needed. The film fuses his signature style, his familiar players and his impeccably symmetrical cinematography with something new. Okay, “new-ish” but that’s still an improvement. Because the events are set in the past and are technically a retelling of a retelling of crazy happenings, the chasm that typically exists between how Anderson sees reality and how reality really is becomes irrelevant.

Essentially, The Grand Budapest Hotel is a wild caper, littered with macabre humor, more murder

than one would anticipate (including severed heads and fingers) and one hell of a lead performance. The performer who hella delivered is Ralph Fiennes, who carves out a divinely unique character, named Gustave. He is a charming rakish fop with a bizarre moral code and foul mouth. Set in the 1930s, things begin to unravel for Gustave, a legendary concierge, when an elderly, wealthy, blonde female hotel guest he routinely beds dies under suspicious circumstances.

Because of this, Gustave and his side kick/lobby boy, Zero (Tony Revolori), are thrust in increasingly madcap situations.

The catalyst for the ongoing shenanigans is technically the will of the deceased Madame D (Tilda Swinton). She leaves a priceless painting to her lover Gustave, much to the rage of her vile son Dmitri (Adrien Brody) and his murderous henchman, Jopling (Willem Dafoe). Gustave is whisked in and out of prison and is on the run from a pseudo-gestapo officer, Henckels (Edward Norton). All the while, Zero pines for his lady love and rad pastry chef, Agatha (Saorise Ronan), and tries

to help his fugitive mentor while keeping order at the hotel they both love.

The Grand Budapest Hotel takes place in the “Republic of Zubrowka,” which some of you know doesn’t exist.

This leads to the theory that all of Anderson’s films take place in an alternate universe where Zubrowka is on the map and everyone dresses like an Arcade Fire album cover. Not only does this setting free Anderson from the shackles of known reality, but it allows him to offer a fresh thematic thesis (for him anyway): the art of storytelling is insanity and lies littered with truths stolen from others.

The Grand Budapest Hotel is easily Anderson’s best (live-action) film since The Royal Tenenbaums. It proves he can leverage his signature style to tell new stories, to make fresh content that resembles his previous work without ripping himself off. Anderson has always had a loyal cadre of vocal, animated supporters singing his praises. For once, it feels nice to join them.
