Parecía una historia increíble que contar como periodista; niños dispuestos a atravesar este mundo hostil para llegar con sus madres”, dijo Sonia Nazario, autora de Enrique’s Journey (El Viaje de Enrique). Nazario dijo que millones de madres solteras vienen a los EE.UU. desde México y América Central, dejando atrás a sus hijos. Ellas dejan a sus hijos pues no pueden darles de comer. Ella dijo que la mayoría piensan que la separación sería corta, por uno o dos años como máximo. “Pero la vida es más dura de lo que la mayoría espera y la separación usualmente puede llegar a ser de entre cinco o diez años, o inclusive más larga. Y estos niños se desesperan por ver a sus madres de nuevo por lo que salen por su cuenta en un viaje para venir a los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica para encontrarlas”, nos explicó Nazario. Pero estos niños no tienen dinero para viajar por lo que cada año miles de ellos comienzan esta odisea al aferrarse a la parte superior de los trenes de carga. Viajan en estos trenes a través de México y hacia los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica. Nazario dijo que durante este arduo viaje, los niños tienen que enfrentarse a gánsteres que controlan las partes superiores de los trenes, sin mencionar a los carteles del tráfico de drogas. “Así que estos niños se enfrentan a los bandidos al pasar por los rieles del tren. Llegan a estar frente a una docena de agencias de policía corruptas y casi toda esta gente está tratando de, en muchas ocasiones, robarles, violarles, golpearlos o matarlos,”. Ella dijo que los niños están viajando a través de México de manera ilegal, por lo que no pueden estar en una estación de tren. Tienen que abordar los trenes

cuando están en movimiento, lo cual es muy peligroso. Y muchos de ellos pierden sus piernas, brazos o incluso la vida durante este viaje. Enrique es un niño que Nazario conoció en el Norte de México. Su madre lo dejó en Honduras cuando él solamente tenía cinco años de edad. Once años después, el salió a buscarla por su cuenta. Él realizó ocho intentos durante 122 días y viajó 12,000 millas en esta búsqueda para poder encontrarla en los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica. Sonia Nazario realizó una entrevista con Enrique sobre todo lo que había vivido durante los ocho intentos para poder llegar a los EE.UU. Él le dijo a ella que fue golpeado por las pandillas arriba de los trenes hasta casi morir. Entonces Nazario hizo algo extremadamente peligroso. Algo que transformó como veía tanto a los inmigrantes como a la cuestión de la inmigración. Ella se armo de valor y viajó en los trenes. “Regresé a Honduras y realicé este viaje paso a paso justo como Enrique lo había realizado unas semanas antes. Pasé tres meses viajando en la parte superior de siete trenes de carga a través de México”, dijo Nazario. El jueves 19 de septiembre, ella compartirá sus enseñanzas sobre estas experiencias durante los eventos de South High School y el Metropolitan Community College. Enrique’s Journey fue lanzado en una versión para jóvenes adultos y ha estado entre los libros más escogi-

d o s en los campus de preparatoria y de universidad como lectura común. “En opinión, para muchos estudiantes que no conocen a los inmigrantes pero tal vez los odian, este libro ofrece una manera de entrar a una familia de inmigrantes y en verdad tratar de entender que motiva a las personas a salir de estos países, así como conocer lo que están dispuestos a hacer para llegar aquí”, dijo ella. Nazario hablo recientemente en una escuela en el área de Los Ángeles y una tercera parte de los niños en el auditorio levantaron su mano cuando ella preguntó sobre cuántos de ellos conocían a alguna persona que hubiese llegado a los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica en un tren de carga. Ella duda que un muro fronterizo que divida a México y los EE.UU. en verdad vaya a lograr detener a personas con una determinación tan grande como aquellos niños que ella vio en la parte superior de los trenes. De acuerdo con la escritora, 51 por ciento de las personas que están aquí con una condición migratoria ilegal son mujeres y niños.

Y que los niños lleguen a los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica es solamente la mitad de la historia. En este sentido, nazario dijo que las reuniones no siempre son tan prometedoras. “Contrario a lo mostrado por algunas películas, es muy complicado cuando estas familias son reunificadas y muchos de estos niños tienen un profundo resentimiento contra sus madres por haberlos abandonado. Esto crea muchos problemas no sólo en las familias Latinas pues existen también repercusiones sociales ya que estos niños pensaban que por fin tendrían este gran amor con sus madres, pero en lugar de ello tienen todos estos sentimientos de resentimiento que están presentes”, dijo Nazario. Aunque el número de personas que ingresa a los EE.UU. ha permanecido sin grandes movimientos desde el 2007, en el último año el número de niños que vienen solos a los EE.UU. se ha duplicado y se espera un incremento del 72 por ciento tan solo en este año. Nazario estima que hay alrededor de 100,000 en camino a los EE.UU. cada año desde México y Centroamérica, y están haciendo este desgarrador viaje en la parte superior de estos trenes de carga. Ella dijo que escribió el libro para enfocarse en los malentendidos de muchas personas sobre quiénes son estos inmigrantes y sobre la razón por la que vienen a los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica. Nazario dijo que existe una falta general de información. “Para el 2020, 30 por ciento de los niños en nuestras escuelas públicas serán o bien un inmigrante o el hijo de un inmigrantes. Los educadores necesitan entender los traumas por los que han pasado estos niños en sus países natales, en este viaje y al llegar a los EE.UU.”, dijo Nazario. Sonia Nazario’s Incredible Journey She said since the children are traveling through Mexico illegally, they can’t get on at the train station. They have to board these trains as they’re moving which is very dangerous. And many of them lose legs, arms or their lives on this journey. Enrique is a boy Nazario met in Northern Mexico. His mother left him in Honduras when he was just five years old. Eleven years later, he set off to find her on his own. He made eight attempts over 122 days and traveled 12,000 miles in this quest to reach her in the United States. Nazario interviewed Enrique about everything he had been through during all eight attempts to make it to the U.S. He told her how he was nearly beaten to death on the top of the trains by the gangs. Then Nazario did something incredibly dangerous, something that transformed her view of both migrants and the immigrant issue. She rode the trains herself. “I went back to Honduras and did this journey stepby-step just like Enrique did a few weeks before. I spent three months riding on top of seven freight trains up the length of Mexico,” Nazario said. On Thursday, September 19, she will share her insights about these experiences during events at South High School and Metropolitan Community College. Enrique’s Journey came out as a young adult version and has been among the most chosen books on college and high school campuses as a common read. “For a lot of students who don’t know immigrants but may hate them, the book offers a way of going into one immigrant family and really trying to understand what drives people out of these countries and what they are willing to do to get here,” she said. Nazario spoke at a Los Angeles-area high school recently and a third of the kids in the large auditorium raised their hands when she asked them how many of them knew someone that had come to America on a freight train. She’s doubtful that a wall between Mexico and the U.S. will really stop individuals as determined as the kids she saw on the tops of the trains. According to Nazario, 51 percent of the people who are here unlawfully are women and children. And children making it to America is only half the story. Nazario said the reunions are not always so rosy. “Contrary to what some movies show, it’s very complicated when these families reunify and a lot of these kids deeply resent their mothers for leaving them. This creates a lot of issues not only in Latino families. There is also social fallout because these kids thought they’d finally have this great love with their mother but instead they have all these feelings of resentment that kind of come to the surface,” said Nazario. Even though the number of people coming to the U.S. has been largely flat since 2007, in the last year, the number of children coming alone into the U.S. has doubled and is expected to rise 72 percent just this year. Nazario estimated there are about 100,000 children coming into the U.S. alone each year from Mexico and Central America. And they are making this harrowing trek on top of these freight trains. She said she wrote the book to address the misunderstandings many people have about who these immigrants are and why they are coming to America. Nazario said there is a general lack of information. “By 2020, 30 percent of kids in our public schools will be either an immigrant or the child of an immigrant. Educators need to understand the traumas these kids have been through in their home countries, on this journey and upon arrival in the U.S.,” said Nazario.

It just seemed like an incredible story to tell as a journalist; children willing to go through this hostile world to reach their mothers,” said Sonia Nazario, author of Enrique’s Journey. Nazario said millions of single mothers come to the U.S. from Mexico and Central America, leaving their children. They leave their children behind because they are unable to feed them. She said most

believe the separation will be of short duration, one to two years maximum. “But life is harder here than most expect it to be and the separations often stretch into five or ten years or more. And these kids despair of seeing their moms again so they set off on their own to come to America and find them,” explained Nazario. But these kids have no money to travel with so every year thousands of them make this odyssey clinging to the tops of freight trains. They ride these trains through Mexico to the United States. Nazario said throughout this arduous journey, the children have to face gangsters that control the train tops not to mention the drug trafficking cartels. “So these kids face bandits alongside the rails. And they face about a dozen corrupt police agencies and almost all of these folks are either trying to rob them, rape them, beat them or kill them, in many instances.”

La frontera Mexica-Estadounidense El 19 de septiembre, el Secretario de Seguridad Nacional, Rand Beers visitó Texas y México con el fin de discutir las fronteras de la nación y la lucha contra el tráfico de ambas drogas y armas en la frontera de EE.UU. y México. Beers indicó que “estamos comprometidos a trabajar con nuestros socios en las comunidades fronterizas, así como México para asegurarnos de que toda la frontera sudoeste es segura al tiempo facilitando los viajes legales y comerciales en los cuales ambas economías dependen.” Beers explicó que los Estados Unidos y México están trabajando en iniciativas y programas para que ambos países puedan ejercer la corresponsabilidad en la seguridad de las fronteras. Algunas de estas iniciativas incluyen el desarrollo de más iniciativas para los programas existentes y buscando enfoques innovadores que se ejecutarán en el futuro. Es la esperanza de Beers que estos esfuerzos ayuden a facilitar los viajes y el comercio lícito. Inmigración Un artículo publicado por el Washington Post el 19 de septiembre indica que se espera acción sobre la reforma migratoria en el futuro cercano. Según el Washington Post, el presidente del Comité Judicial de la Cámara Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) anunció la semana pasada que se necesita tomar acción sobre inmigración y se está llevando a cabo trabajo en comité para lograr ese objetivo. Según Goodlatte compañeros de su comité están trabajando en cuatro proyectos de leyes diferentes que a abordar diferentes aspectos del sistema roto de inmigración de EE.UU. Entre los temas que se están abordando son los niños llegados en la infancia, un camino ganado para la ciudadanía y visas para los trabajadores poco cualificados.

Yo abandoné la escuela porque sale muy caro estudiar y creo que no soy muy bueno, además que no sé cuáles son las becas en las que puedo calificar, y la verdad es que solo tengo un trabajo de medio tiempo y no me alcanza con lo que gano....”, comentó José Guzmán, estudiante desertor de la escuela secundaria del Sur. Sobre este testimonio, hay que indicar que el Sur de la ciudad es el distrito más grande en Omaha que sirve a más alumnos latinos, quienes son más propensos a abandonar la escuela. Y precisamente para contrarrestar este hecho, el Consulado de México en Omaha, inaugura el proyecto llamado: Ventanilla de Educación “Este será un espacio abierto al púbico en las instalaciones del Consulado, cuyo objetivo es brindar información acerca de los programas educativos que pueden ser de beneficio para los estudiantes y sus familias, motivándoles para que realicen o concluyan sus estudios”, menciono Cristina Lamas, quien forma parte del Latino Academic Achievement Council, instancia con un papel importante en la planeación y ejecución del proyecto. Reafirmando lo dicho por Lamas, el departamento de educación publicó recientemente que la educación es el camino para cambiar la vida de un estudiante, señalando que un joven que no concluye su educación preparatoria puede estar destinado a ganar 10 dólares por hora el resto de su vida, mientras que uno que concluye su doctorado podría más que quintuplicar esa cifra. En el mismo sentido, María Vázquez, directora del Consejo Consultivo del Instituto de los Mexicanos en el Exterior, en Nebraska y Iowa, reiteró la importancia de acercar la información educativa a la comunidad en general, en los lugares a los que se suele congregar, como lo es el Consulado de México, subrayando que este proyecto no será solo para los mexicanos, pues habrá de recibir y atender también a los centro y sur americanos. Vázquez señaló que su dependencia esta también dentro de las que están ejecutando el proyecto educativo, que “por ahora habrá de comenzar como una prueba piloto, una vez al mes durante todo un año, de manera gratuita”. La Ventanilla de Educación esta abierta a más proveedores de servicios educativos para la población migrante, por lo cual se espera que pronto se vincule una amplia gama de organizaciones y entidades educativas. “El primer evento será este viernes 27 de septiembre y ofrecerá una feria de universidades, de 9 a 11:30 de la mañana”, dijo Lina Traslaviña, quien representa también al Latino Academic Achievement Council. Traslaviña, Lamas y Vázquez, tienen altas expectativas en la Ventanilla de Educación, considerando los resultados que se han obtenido en la nación dentro de otros consulados mexicanos. Su experiencia en el área educativa en Omaha y sus alrededores, les permiten canalizar de forma asertiva cada paso que se ha venido realizando para cristalizar este proyecto. Cabe mencionar que un reciente estudio conducido por el departamento de educación de los EE. UU. observó que la decisión del joven de abandonar la escuela es un proceso que comienza en la temprana niñez y culmina en la adolescencia. Por ello, expertos indican que los padres, maestros y dependencias educativas deben de colaborar para desarrollar proyectos que informen los recursos edu-

Yo por lo pronto pienso asistir a este evento y espero que más estudiantes y sus padres también estén presentes”, concretó Guzmán.

U.S Mexico Border On September 19, Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Rand Beers visited Texas and Mexico in order to discuss the nation’s border and combating both narcotics and weapons smuggling across the U.S and Mexican border. Beers indicated “we are committed to working with our partners in border communities as well as Mexico to make sure that the entire Southwest border is secure while facilitating legal travel and trade that both our economies rely on.” Beers further explained the both the United States and Mexico are working on initiatives and programs so both countries can exercise co-responsibility on border management. Some of these initiatives include further developing existing trade programs and looking into innovative approaches to be implemented in the future. It is the hope of Beers that these efforts will help facilitate lawful travel and trade. Immigration A September 19 article printed by the Washington Post indicates that action on immigration reform is expected in the near future. According to the Washington Post House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) announced last week that action on immigration needs to be solved and work is being done behind the scenes to achieve that goal. According to Goodlatte fellow committee members are working on four different bills aimed to address different aspects of the broken U.S immigration system. Among the issues being addressed are childhood arrivals, an earned path to citizenship and visas for low-skilled workers.

I quit school because studying is too expensive and I think I’m not good at it, and I also don’t know which scholarships I can qualify for, and the truth is that I only have a part-time job and what I make is not enough…,” said Jose Guzman, a dropout student from South High school. In regards to this testimony, we must state that the South of the city is the largest district in Omaha that serves the most Latino students who are more likely to drop out of school. It is precisely because of it all that the Mexican Consulate in Omaha, looking to counter this, has started a project called “Ventanilla de Educación” (Education Booth). “This will be a space open to the public right in the Consulate’s facilities, and its goal is to provide information about all the education programs that can be beneficial for students and their families, thus motivating them to start to study or to finish school,” said Cristina Lamas who is part of the Latino Academic Achievement Council, which plays an important role in the planning and execution of the project. Reaffirming what was said by Lamas, the Department of Education recently said that education is the way to change the life of a student, stating that a young person who doesn’t finish high-school might be destined to earn $10 an hour for the rest of their life while someone that obtains a PhD might earn up to five times that. In that same sense Maria Vazquez, Director of the Advisory Council of the Institute of Mexicans Abroad - in Nebraska and Iowa - once again stated the importance of bringing information about education closer to the community, especially at places where they usually gather, as is the case of the Mexican Consulate, emphasizing that this project is not only for Mexicans since people from Central and South America will also be provided with all pertinent information. Vazquez stated that her institution is also among those executing the educational project which “for now will start as a test program, once a month for a whole year, for free.”

The Education Booth is open to including more education service providers for the immigrant population, which is why it is expected that soon a wide range of educational organizations and entities will be part of the program. “The first event will be held this Friday, September 27th, and will offer a Universities Fair from 9 to 11:30 a.m.,” said Lina Traslaviña, who represents the Latino Academic Achievement Council. Traslaviña, Lamas and Vazquez have high expectations for the Education Booth because of the nationwide results at other Mexican Consulates. Their experience in the Education sector in Omaha and the surrounding areas allows them to assertively channel each step of the way so that the project can become a reality. A recent study by the U.S. Department of Education said that a young person’s decision to drop out of school is a process that starts in their early childhood and culminates during their adolescence. Because of that, experts say that parents, teachers and educational institutions must collaborate in order to develop projects to inform others about the educational resources available for students so that they can prevent an increase in young dropouts. This is the goal of the Education Booth, and it will be up to the community to determine how effective it can be. This will in turn impact the Omaha community as well as the whole country. For now, Guzman is happy to know he’ll be able to participate in the first Education Booth where he hopes to find what he needs to go back to school so that he can become another Hispanic with a college degree. “I’m happy because this is like the light at the end of the road and I believe that all Hispanics need this help in order to reach the dream of having a proper education and a well paid job. As for me, I will be there for this event, and I hope that more students and parents come as well,” said Guzman.

os padres de Adrián Díaz son originarios de Durango: “Pero emigraron a Estados Unidos hace muchos años, para que sus hijos tuvieran una mejor educación”. Fue así que Díaz nació en Chicago, pero su familia se mudó a la comunidad rural de Tecumseh en Nebraska, “esperando que creciéramos en un ambiente tranquilo, lejos de peligros como pandillas y drogas”. Díaz asistió a la universidad y se abrió paso con sus propios méritos, obteniendo un buen empleo con excelentes ingresos: “Entonces decidí adquirir mi primer casa y precisamente la persona que estuvo conmigo en ése proceso, me dijo que yo sería muy bueno haciendo lo mismo. Pero tenía mis dudas porque no había trabajado en el mercado financiero”. Cuando Wells Fargo abrió una nueva posición, Díaz reconsideró la oportunidad y lo que definitivamente lo orilló a cambiar de carrera fue que eso le permitiría ayudar de cerca a la comunidad hispana: “Esta persona me explicó que había quienes trataban deshonestamente a las familias hispanas, otorgándoles créditos hipotecarios con intereses altísimos y préstamos inadecuados que a la larga tendrían que estar refinanciando. Yo soy un individuo muy protector y pensé en mi propia madre, y que lo que menos me gustaría es que estuviera en una situación semejante, donde alguien se aprovechara de ella”. Luego de 2 años, Díaz fue ascendido como gerente y se quedó en dicha compañía más de 8 años.

Simultaneamente, compaginó sus tareas como presidente de El Centro de las Américas en Lincoln. Pero con el éxito profesional llegaron las presiones y la falta del tiempo necesario para establecer su propia familia. “Por eso decidí cambiar el rumbo hacia el área de seguros, convencido de que podría enfocarme en construir una empresa en la cual pudiera rodearme de un excelente equipo para delegar mis funciones”, dijo Díaz, quien bajo la firma Farm Bureau Financial Services abrió su propia oficina hace dos años y medio en la capital del estado y después, una sucursal más en Omaha. En Farm Bureau Financial Services, Díaz y su equipo brindan servicios como el seguro de vida, de salud, para su casa, auto o negocio, además de todo lo relacionado en materia de inversiones. “Las familias cometen dos grandes errores - enfatizó Díaz -, el primero es que no se preparan para los riesgos diarios de su vida y no invierten en su futuro; y el segundo es que no entienden los límites de su cobertura”. he parents of Adrian Diaz are from the Mexican State of Durango: “They immigrated to the United States many years ago so that their children could have a better education.” It was because of this that Diaz was born in Chicago, but then his family moved to the rural community of Tecumseh in Nebraska, “hoping that we could grow-up in a peaceful environment, away from the dangers of gangs and drugs.” Diaz attended college and he succeeded by his own merits, securing a good job with an excellent income: “I then decided to buy my first house, and the person who was with me during that process said I would be great at doing the same thing. I was hesitant because I had worked so hard in the financial market.” When Wells Fargo had an opening for a new position, Diaz reconsidered this opportunity, and what definitely pushed him to change careers was the fact that this would allow him to be close enough to help the Hispanic community: “This person explained to me that there were several people that were dishonest with Hispanic families by granting them a mortgage loan with extremely high interests as well as loans that were inadequate, and that they would need to constantly refinance as time went by. I’m a very protective individual, and I thought of my own mother and about how I wouldn’t want her to be in a similar situation where someone would take advantage of her.” After two years, Diaz was promoted to the manager position and stayed at the company for over 8

years. While at that job, Diaz was also President for El Centro de las Americas at Lincoln. But with his professional success came an added pressure as well as a lack of time to settle down and start his own family. “That’s why I decided to shift to the insurance business since I believed that I could focus into building a company where I could surround myself with an excellent staff,” said Diaz who opened his own office at the State’s Capital under the Farm Bureau Financial Services firm about two and a half years ago, and he then later opened another branch at Omaha. At Farm Bureau Financial Services, Diaz and his team provide a wide variety of services such as life insurance, health insurance, home insurance, car insurance, or business insurance, as well as on everything about investments. “Families make two big mistakes. The first one is they don’t prepare for the daily risks of life, and they don’t invest in their future. The second one is that they don’t understand the limits for their coverage.” This is why Diaz recommends that people review their insurance policies at least once a year as he does with all of his clients, in order to be informed about any changes so that they can protect their estate.
