Aramark works to improve dining experience for all

Changes to the Diamondback Café continue to take place after renovations in the summer brought a new look and a new menu in the hope of making the café more pleasing for students.

“I wouldn’t consider the changes major. I would consider them some good quality changes to help expedite speedy services,” John Finerghty, the Aramark Director of Cafeteria Food Service, said.

Among some of the changes made to the café are menu changes, station hour changes, repainting and a new look for one of the cafeteria’s busiest food stations—Grille Works.

According to Finerghty, the Grille Works project started while students were in school last year and the Aramark corporate level made the decision to begin the project. Described as going “through a refresh” by Finerghty, Grille Works received a paint job, an alteration of menu items and video screens to display their standardized menu. Incorporating the menu into the station allows the speed of service to be increased so that customers can read the menu, order what they need and be on their way.

Also, as a response to students’ request for later station hours, Finerghty and his team opened stations for longer periods of times such as the Bène Pasta, Bène Pizza, Miso and the salad/soup bar, which are all open until 10 p.m. on select days.

On a day-to-day basis, the Aramark team takes into account three main areas as their primary focus: customer service, speed of service and quality food.

“I’ve learned how to navigate through crowds and how to manage lines. Speed of service has always been my number one issue,” Finerghty said. “…when you come to the cafe, I don’t want you to have to wait in line. I want you to take the 30 minutes you have, forget about school, get your food, sit down and relax.”

Finerghty states that although lines cannot be prevented, as director he tries to focus on strategizing ways to decrease the wait.

The Aramark team also works with various departments, such as Physical Plant and Dean of Students Tim Bessler, to constantly update or modify any changes to the cafeteria.

about something that’s going on in the dining hall and ideas that he has, ideas that I have, or ideas that I have heard from students or colleagues,” Bessler said. “There’s all kind of things that we’re looking at because the dining experience is a significant part of all our days here at the University, particularly our resident students.”

Junior entrepreneurial studies major Sean Lanagan, who utilizes Aramark’s services daily like most students on campus, is somewhat satisfied with the changes the cafeteria has made.

“It seems like they have all the tools they need to make the food, but I guess the biggest thing is changing the menu. I feel that they should cater to us a little bit

more by changing up the menu and make it a little bit more pleasurable to eat here,” Lanagan said. “Other than the menu, I think that we are good.”

Bessler and Finerghty agree that any feedback, suggestions or issues be brought to their attention. Despite issues that may arise, both departments work hard to resolve any issues.

“For me to say it’s a perfect day every day here at food service, it’s not.

I mean, things happen constantly. From equipment breakdown, trucks are late, food shortage, equipment issues, you name it, it happens,” Finerghty said. “A lot of times, we’re like firefighters, putting fires out, but the show must go on, no matter what.”

Students ask for bike donations to help support program Members of the Student Government Association hope to begin bicycle program next semester with the help of donations.

Student Government Association is in the process of initiating a new program that will accelerate the commute for students who are tired of walking long distances from various buildings across campus.

Throughout the semester, SGA members will be accepting bicycle donations to help reach their goal of starting the Rattler Bikes program in the spring. According to senior political science major and SGA President Joaquin Toranzo Jr., the program, based on the Yellow Bike Project of Western Carolina University, will install bike stations around campus so

that students, faculty and staff can pickup and drop-off bikes.

“The Rattler Bikes program is an opportunity for St. Mary’s students to unite to bring a sustainable and communityfriendly mode of transportation to our campus,” Toranzo said. He added that students, faculty and staff would be able to use the bikes to get around campus— free of charge.

Toranzo said students can “ride it to their class or activity, drop it off there, and allow for the next student to pick up and ride it elsewhere—every Rattler sharing every bike.”

Currently, SGA has four bicycles that were donated by the University Police Department.

SGA hopes to expand their

number of bicycles in order to make this program a success.

Evelynn Mitchell, professor of earth sciences, believes this program will create less of an impact on the environment.

“Having the bikes available will…encourage students not to drive from one side of campus to the other, which will mean students will use less gasoline, and with rising gas prices, this will mean leaving more money for students to use toward books, food and entertainment,” Mitchell said.

According to University President Charles Cotrell, the Rattler Bikes program is more than just time-efficient and cost-effective.

“The Rattler Bikes program

speaks to healthy living and to an awareness that there are other ways to navigate a campus rather than simply driving your car around hoping to find a parking spot,” Cotrell said.

Dean of Students Tim Bessler agrees with Cotrell, “[Rattler Bikes] is a more direct way to get around campus. It is a more timeefficient mode of transportation than driving around campus.”

For senior economics and international business major Raul Hernandez, “This program will increase the interaction of students on campus and make them happier.”

Residence Hall receives renovations over summer break

Renovations to Dougherty Hall, a 43-year-old residence hall on campus, were completed a week before welcoming a new set of freshmen residents through its doors.

Renovations included replacing all the wood flooring and old carpet, along with 25 bathroom sinks and new furniture for the social areas according to Dougherty Hall Director John Carrillo.

“Basically, the building was a little older and it needed a facelift,” Carrillo said. “We planned this (the renovations) in May and finished in August, just in time for school to start.”

The first difference that can be seen upon entering the hall is the focus of its renovations. “The main reason we renovated was because it was time for the flooring to be changed out,” Director of Residence Life James Villarreal said. “But we also reconfigured the hall for incoming freshmen.”

The last time Dougherty Hall, built in 1968, received changes was two years ago when the rooms and halls were repainted.

However, when it was switched from a sophomore residence hall to freshmen based this year, modifications were required.

Renovations were not only for aesthetic purposes, but also for creating a welcoming environment for its residents.

“We try to put a sense of community into the freshmen. It’s more inviting and draws people to come and hang out,” junior psychology major and resident assistant for Dougherty Hall Julie Crusa said.

According to junior accounting major Liana Castro, the hall was in need of renovations.

“When I lived in Dougherty Hall, I think there were many renovations that were needed there that included better washers, new carpet and if possible, a better air conditioning unit inside the rooms,” Castro said, who was a resident of the hall last spring. “The carpet looked very old and coated with dust all the time and as far as the air conditioning unit issue, many times we had to open the window or bring excess fans to keep cool and sleep comfortably.”

Noticeable differences can be seen throughout the hall in which more of its residents are utilizing its new resources.

The changes have already had a positive effect on the new residents. Throughout the day and evening, students, like freshman international relations major Jennifer Rivas, are in the lounges playing pingpong, pool, watching television and studying.

“I love the homey atmosphere and the overall friendly environment,” Rivas said.

Program helps students plan course schedules on Gateway

By Alexander Eakins Staff Writer

This semester, university officials launched the Graduation Planning System, a new tool that allows students to track their forthcoming degree requirements as well as their completed requirements on their Gateway account.

First proposed in November of last year, the project was undertaken by the Registrar’s Office, who partnered with the Information Technology Services Department for help in the technological portion of it.

At the helm of this project was Registrar Christina Villanueva, who acted as the team leader.

“It’s just like the GPS in your car,” Villanueva explains. “You plug in your destination and it takes you there.”

According to Villanueva, the user can also simulate a change of major, allowing them to see how that would affect their degree requirements as well.

Not only that, GPS boasts a GPA calculator, allowing students to see their cumulative GPA as they plan it out. This system is a major upgrade as far as degree audits go, Villanueva said.

Villanueva stated, “We needed something more userfriendly for the students to follow degree requirements. What was there prior to GPS was not userfriendly, by far. It was a need. So the university made a move to make this investment, and I think it was really well-worth it.”

A fairly archaic system was used prior to GPS. That

system included balance sheets that were manually updated periodically by the associate registrar, the administrative assistant in the School of Business and the administrative assistant for the School of Law. Many hands played a role in implementing this program.

Alongside the Registrar’s Office, the ITS department was avidly involved.

Behind the scenes as technological project manager and planner was Executive Director of Resource Management and Planning Louisa Martin. Martin ensured that the project met its deadlines and actually went live.

“The institution committed a lot of time and resources to building the GPS and we partnered with a consulting group in doing that. That speaks very strongly to the commitment the institution has to supporting the students and helping the students in their course decisions,” Martin said.

Furthermore, the GPS also benefits students because it can be accessed conveniently on iPhones, iPads and other smartphones, as long as Internet access is available, As Martin puts it, “It’s welcome information at your fingertips.”

Thus far, there are few readily noticeable issues with the GPS, both technologically and practically. The only obstacle ahead of the GPS is “converting from an old degree audit system to GPS. So our returning students that had substitutions in the old system, have to be

manually moved into the new system,” said Villanueva.

This relatively small problem was anticipated at the project’s birth, and it is currently being resolved by putting substitutions from the old system into the new system so that returning students can also view their course requirements.

In any case, ease of access, portability, timeliness and sound technology have given the GPS very positive feedback.

First introduced to the program during a workshop at a summer orientation, freshman criminal justice major Ryan Munoz is one student who has utilized and appreciated the GPS. “I find it beneficial due to the fact that it has everything planned out. You could plan your whole four years out and if you want to change it, you could drop a course, and add a different one to see how it’s going to fit your schedule,” Munoz said. “It’s just really easy to use.”

The GPS will also have some updates that will further help students. These updates include special audits that assist with financial aid as well as special audits displaying sports requirements that will be accessible to all GPS users.

No co-pay on birth control will assist women

Many women in the U.S. use birth control to avoid the risk of unplanned pregnancies.

However, numerous women do not have this option because birth control tends to be Jenavie Aguilar pricey. Not every woman in the U.S. has the resources to go to a doctor and pay hundreds of dollars for testing services and another pretty penny on the cost of the birth control prescription itself.

Women do not realize that without birth control, they are risking a lot more than money. Women should have access to controlling the possibility of a pregnancy without worrying about the cost.

Come Aug. 1 of next year, insurance companies will be required to cover all costs of any birth control including the birth control pill, intrauterine devices, and the morningafter pill. In addition, insurance companies will also cover the cost of mammograms, pap smears, and other medical services free of charge, according to new guidelines issued by the Department of Health and Human Services. Many doctors, the government and Planned Parenthood all agree that the outcome of the new guidelines will benefit women’s health.

I can only imagine the difficulty of a college woman trying to go to school and raise a child. It is almost impossible to have a baby and go to school full-time, or even part-time. While some can do it, it is extremely expensive and hard to keep up with homework, tests, readings, as well as baby formula, daycare arrangements, and midnight diaper changes. I believe that it would be a better choice to graduate college and reach all of your goals before committing your time to another life.

There are many more benefits to these free services other than just planning pregnancies. Birth control pills also help to control acne, regulate periods and lessen cramps and headaches during menstruation. Receiving free test services allows doctors to find any diseases and cysts women may have in their ovaries. It can even catch breast or ovarian cancer early on.

Knowing that next year there will be no cost to birth control and other tests, college women should take full advantage and do anything in their power to stay healthy.

There are no more excuses. The time has come where we must focus on keeping the women of America healthy and ready for their pregnancies. So ladies, stop worrying about the cost. Be on the lookout August of next year. Why stress? Be healthy.

Citywide smoking ban put into effect New ban will hurt business and could drastically effect the economy.

The new bans will help protect the health of our citizens.

Privately-owned restaurants and bars are defined in the city Municipal Code as “public places,” which means “the public is invited or…permitted” to enter during business hours. The public, through its representatives in the City Council, can Chris lawfully and morally regulate certain Childree activities that occur, such as smoking.

The public reserves the authority to regulate smoking because it affects the well-being of bystanders. Smokers have not obtained the consent of all the individuals in the vicinity to fill the air with smoke that could potentially pollute their bodies.

No individual has a right to directly pollute our air.

However, places zoned for smoking can be expected to welcome individuals that consent to destroying their health, as is their right.

Opponents of the smoking ban, particularly owners of bars, believe restrictions on public smoking hurt their businesses. Mayor Julian Castro disagrees, arguing “every nontobacco-funded study has demonstrated a positive or neutral impact on bar and restaurants by going nonsmoking,” according to the San Antonio Express News.

Even if the opponents are correct, it is hard to feel sympathy for those profiting off others’ addictions.

Bars and restaurants that permit smoking do so partly to receive customers that are not allowed to light up at non-smoking establishments. Without this advantage, all businesses will be on a level playing field and will be judged on quality.

Currently, on campus there is a ban on smoking 50 feet from the entrances of residence halls and law school buildings. Next semester, the ban will be implemented on all the buildings. As a private university, St. Mary’s reserves the right to make the rule it deems necessary, regardless of the views of the student body.

It is fortunate that the university is concerned with the well-being of the students. Morally, students should not be expected to waive their right to breathe clean air when they step on campus. Even if the entire university, save one individual, was willing to waive this right, that one individual is reason enough to initiate a full-scale ban.

There are no nationwide smoking bans, as this is an issue our federal government has left up to the states. The degrees of bans on smoking in 27 states range from harsh to none at all. In Texas, it is illegal to smoke in public places such as hospitals, movie theaters and libraries.

Frances Mell On Aug. 19, San Antonio enforced a citywide smoking ban. Clubs, bars, and pool halls will now be completely smoke free. On campus, a 50-foot distance from all buildings will be implemented across campus. The question is, should the university remove these smoke free zones entirely and go completely smoke free?

The smoke free zones are good for the campus because it keeps smoke out of the buildings, and away from students who choose not to smoke. These smoke free zones are a compromise, as people are still able to smoke if they want, and non-smokers do not have to be around it. Compromises like these should continue, and an outright ban should not be implemented. If smokers confine themselves to a safe distance from buildings, the health of their fellow citizens can remain intact.

An argument for people wanting to ban smoking in general is that it is harmful to others. But fast food places offer meals that are northbound of 1,000 calories, and that is also a choice people make for themselves. Whether an individual’s vice is their weekly quarter pounder, or filling their lungs with tobacco, it is their right to do with their body as they please.

Putting a prohibition on smoking could eventually terminate thousands of jobs. The tobacco industry is a multimillion-dollar business. If people are not allowed to smoke anywhere, it will hurt the purchase of cigarettes and other tobacco products. If there is no money being spent in the tobacco industry, then there are no paychecks available for workers. Factories would have to stop production and close their doors. The loss of this industry would put another dent in our already hurting economy.

As long as smokers are 18, they have the right to choose whether or not to smoke. If smokers are not infringing on the rights of others, they should be allowed designated areas where they can smoke as they please.

College in the Recession With a new year come new realizations: higher education is rapidly growing out of reach. We cannot blame the recession as the reason for reducing opportunity, but we can blame the recession for increasing the financial burdens on students and families. And with the cost of attending a private university double the cost of public universities, students are facing a bigger pressure than ever.

So we must ask, does school really pay off? According to a recent report from the U.S. Census Bureau, a college graduate will earn about $1.2 million more in lifetime earnings than a high school graduate. But there is no guarantee that a college degree will come with a job attached to it.

As more students seek higher education to take on an increasingly competitive job market, they must also learn that access to once widely available and affordable education will continue to decrease with shrinking funds.

Students are placing a greater importance on higher education, which comes with high costs. Some students take more than four years to graduate, adding years of tuition to the overall cost. Then there are those students who feel the heavy burden of loans. To reduce that debt, they reduce their time in college— taking 18 hours or more consecutively, as well as summer courses—without a break. Students will also work excessively while still attending classes.

The importance of education has driven students to overwork themselves.

They strive for excellence and confirmation of their accomplishments.

Current economic woes might dim the excitement that comes with a college degree. But we must look forward to graduating and leaving the struggles behind.

It may be a challenge to face the uncertain times head-on, but we should strive to make the most of adverse circumstances and to always keep learning.

Budget causes crisis for schools Public education is often taken for granted. Children are sent to state institutions to receive what we hope is a quality education. From the first to twelfth grade, a generation of students sit in classrooms preparing to be productive citizens.

However, recent budget cuts by the Texas Legislature are putting this system in danger.

Local districts are being forced to make major changes in Briana Perez their system. Administrators are taking on more responsibility than ever, and specialists’ positions are being cut, forcing them to return to the classroom. According to the San Antonio Express News, Northside Independent School District has displaced more than 1,000 educators since last year because four billion dollars has been cut from the public education budget.

Along with these already seemingly insurmountable obstacles, teachers are taking on huge class sizes while attempting to prepare students for the new state test, the STAAR, which is rumored to be more challenging than the TAKS. These numbers have real world consequences. While we would like to think all our school children are on the same level and come to school prepared to learn, this is not the case. Some students need special attention, and many may need one-on-one help. But with teachers trying to juggle the attention of ever-increasing class sizes, this may soon prove to be impossible.

Contemplating the possibilities is daunting. As our school districts inch closer and closer to bankruptcy, we can only assume further cuts and redistributions are coming. The question remains—what will be salvaged and what will be eliminated? As generations of future college students enter the public education system, we can only speculate if they will be adequately prepared for the challenges of higher education.

The majority of U.S. citizens rely on state school districts to educate their children and ready them for the steadily competitive job market. The Texas system may not be capable to handle this responsibility while battling a reduced budget and the much fewer resources available to them. Few options are left to the public other than keeping their trust in local districts and the state legislature. Public education is a system that is too big, and too embedded, to let fail.

Perry uses faith to attract supporters On Aug. 13, Texas Gov. Rick Perry officially became a candidate in the 2012 presidential primary race. He’s known as the evangelist of the race, but he’d rather be known as the angel. In response to a comment about his severe criticism from Texans, Perry responded with, “A prophet is generally not loved in their hometown."

Perry plays on his God-fearing image and devotion to his Christian faith.

Emily On Aug. 6, Perry called voters to join him in a day of prayer and fasting to Artalejo repent for being a nation “that has not honored God,” which he says is the cause of the nation’s political, financial and moral crisis, and stated, “God, you’re going to have to fix this.”

Rather than present the changes, if elected, he would make in fiscal policy, social issues, and immigration, he is in essence waiting for ideal reforms to fall from the sky. Rather than ask his supporters to be politically active, he asks them not to eat.

Many politicians invoke the name of God in speeches and at rallies, and evangelists are far from new to the Republican Party, but Perry spends much more time and effort on the pulpit than on policy.

The truth is Perry does not have a definite platform. Perry, a former Democrat, cannot even decide on which end of the GOP spectrum he wants to run. When asked about Social Security on Aug. 18 in New Hampshire, he promises that it’s “going to be there for those folks,” which contradicts his past statement that Social Security was unconstitutional.

When further questioned, Perry responded by stuffing food in his mouth to avoid the question, thus negating his fasting. Perry does not know if he should side with the harsher sentiments of the Tea Party, or appeal to the wider GOP. In other words, he’s caught between the tea party and a hard place, and the only thing he can do is look up.

Perry supporters attempt to shift focus to his economic “successes” as governor, but the glory behind the “Texas Miracle” is slowly unraveling. Thousands of new jobs have been created in Texas in the last decade, but according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, most of these jobs are part of the governmental sector while Texas’ private sector has shrunk, conflicting with Perry’s goal of small government.

Texas economy, which is currently outperforming the United States economy, is attributed to tripled oil prices in the past decade, which were determined by the market and not the governor.

It is very possible that Perry’s religious stance could propel him to the final races of the primaries, if he manages to appeal to the extremely influential early voter states. And if Perry does win the Republican nomination, all I can say is—God help us.

Internet server problems to be resolved on both sides

When the Internet servers go down, frustration builds in many students, leading them to immediately contact the Information Technology Services searching for a solution to their frustrations. Within all this frustration, one question does not seem to be asked— why do the servers go down to begin with?

The university's Internet server has a bandwidth of 100 megabytes. Therefore, the entire university community shares a bandwidth capacity that has to be shared among all those on campus.

According to Louisa Martin, executive director of Resources Management, most of the bandwidth exceeds its limit from 2 p.m. to midnight, which generates a slower server that does not function at times. This is usually the time when students are out of class and use the web for leisure purposes.

This overload does not necessarily imply that students must get off the web, but what the Internet is used for is what causes the problems. It creates excessive activity, causing the servers to slow down or not function at all. When

doing homework, students have multiple Internet pages open besides the one they are actually using. This generates a use of bandwidth that one student uses and leaves less for another.

To better understand this, imagine a study room on campus. It is a fixed space with a set number of seats. If a student studies in the room, and uses another chair for their belongings, it limits the space for other students to study.

This is what occurs when students use the Internet, limiting the space of the bandwidth.

Junior mathematics major Esharf Choudhury says too many people use the Internet for trivial purposes not related to academia. “It’s frustrating when I want to use the library’s computers to quickly search something but I can’t due to people listening to music on the computers or surfing on Facebook,” he said.

Most of bandwidth usage comes from downloads or watching movies. These downloads account for heavy bandwidth use that may slow down the computer in the process. Students that like to game online have to buy separate accessories to access the Internet and use such services as Xbox live. This is due to the authenticated network that the IT Center

has implemented. This makes it difficult for outside users to access the university server. The university uses this network to protect users and restrict access specifically to the community.

Todd Yates, executive director of Technical Operations, believes that much of the Internet server problems should be solved when the university upgrades

its bandwidth to 500 megabytes. The university plans to upgrade to this system

by Sept. 5 via AT&T. Internet servers should work more efficiently but that doesn’t guarantee that the servers will not continue to be problematic. The amount of usage and activity of students vary, but the solution ultimately lies in their discretion of the Internet.

Renowned international author brings new perspective

By Azhmir Acosta Editor-in-Chief Students in English classes this semester may be experiencing a different approach in tackling literature.

This semester, the English department has introduced the Community Reading Experience, a program designed to increase the interaction between students.

The pilot program focuses on the book, "I’ll Ask You Three Times, Are You Okay" by Naomi Shihab Nye, a San Antonio resident and international author. The book, which is being read in multiple classes, will be approached in different ways in hopes of improving fiction writing, developing lesson plans and improving language skills.

Unlike other programs that feature an author without the author present, Nye will be attending a presentation on Oct. 19 where she will be able to talk to students and answer questions.

“It was our hope that the students would get excited about reading a piece of literature by a local author,” said Diane Bertrand, visiting lecturer for the English department and the brains behind the program.

Bertrand’s inspiration for the program was to duplicate the positive experiences that her children had at their universities with similar programs.

There are a wide variety of students participating in the program, including upper-level students, freshmen students and international students. With such a diverse group in all aspects of race, gender and classification, students will gain many new perspectives in analyzing

literature. The author herself comes from an international background which adds to the flavors of the book.

Particularly for freshmen students, the book may become one more element of their conversations according to Cyra Dumitru, visiting lecturer for the English department. Dumitru also commented that conversations have already begun between students and professors as well.

“I would hope for a friendly impact, in which people feel more encouraged to have unexpected conversations filled with surprises—even with someone they may have seen for a long time, but never really spoken with before,” said Nye. Though there are a variety of students participating in the program, the unifying factor that will tie students together will be the common good of sharing life experiences with one another, according to Dumitru.

For Nye, the uniting factor is expressed slightly differently, “Every day we encounter people who we do not know… What more might we tell one another? This is to me the spirit of my humble book.”

Come October, different classes will have developed questions to shape the conversation with Nye in her presentation, says Dumitru. The author, as a character in the book, is always asking questions; therefore, she encourages students to do the same.

“Anyone who reads my book—bring your questions to me! Or your answers and your own stories!” said Nye. Students and professors will be able to engage with the author, not only understanding her intentions behind

the book, but also discovering things about the book that they may have not known before.

“It is very fortunate for us to have Nye here in San Antonio as an author of international stature,” commented Dumitru, a longtime friend of Nye. Both Dumitru and Bertrand expressed hope that the students will be able to build a type of relationship with Nye, especially through the book itself.

While this may be only a pilot program, Bertrand has expressed hope that it will be something that they can continue within the next few semesters, such as making it more thematic and tying it to the President’s Peace Commission and other departments.

The CRE welcomes all majors to take read the book and participate in the conversation. Students from other majors create an even greater pool of diversity among the university. The book itself encourages conversations among the diverse.

"We all live days rich and ripe with possible writing material. Hopefully this book might remind some people of that—we are surrounded with stories, dramas, characters, conversation..." said Nye. It is an opportunity for everyone to see "glimpses of a global vision through a commonplace medium," according to Dumitru. So all students should share in this experience along with their fellow peers.

“Students from all majors can read this book and participate in the presentation,” said Bertrand. Reading and Conversation with Naomi Shihab Nye will be held Oct. 19 at 6:30 p.m. in UC Conference Room A.

Hackers are now able to infiltrate computers in many ways, including spying on users with a webcam.

Students often use programs such as Skype and iChat to video chat during the semester, without realizing the hidden dangers that come with the conveniences of a webcam.

Webcams are so commonly integrated into laptops, hackers are now able to infiltrate not only one's files but what the person is doing at that moment.

The thought of someone seeing a user’s every move is terrifying and troubling, but preventative measures can be taken to disable hackers from infiltrating the webcam.

According to Todd Yates, executive director of Technical Operations at Information Technology Services, “updated and protective software is a good means to prevent any hackers from infiltrating computers, especially the webcam.” For students, there is a link on Gateway under the Resources tab that allows them to download security software that prevents hacking.

Even with precautions, hackers may still manage to hack into a computer.

People must understand how hackers operate in order to securely protect their computer in an efficient manner.

Hackers usually target a certain group of people or organizations that have information they wish to obtain.

Though hackers come in many forms, they commonly use fraud to deceive their victims.

According to Yates, one usual method hackers use is that they portray themselves as a business or social network and send an email to a user.

Once the user opens the email and follows the email’s instructions, they have allowed the hacker to infiltrate their

computer and give them full control.

Hackers have access to all of the user’s files and data. Taking the computer to the IT Center and letting the technicians look at it is the best way to find out how to efficiently protect the computer with any downloaded software needed and tips on how to prevent it.

University students are more protected then they think they are. The university’s network provides added security for students since they are part of an authenticated network. Requiring a username and password creates a safer Internet environment because the IT technicians are able to identify users.

Those without a username or password will be identifiable even if they manage to hack into the network. Nonetheless, hacking can still occur by outside Internet usage or downloading material online.

Installing secured software is the most assured way of keeping computers protected. With protective software, hackers won't be able to infiltrate the computer much less the webcam. Updated protective softwares are also able to spot hackers' methods and known aliases.

For those who don't have sophisticated or updated software, hackers may be able to hack the computer but with limited acess.

Another measure to be taken would be turing off the computer, regularly since leaving it on could give hackers more time to access, infiltrate and spy. When the computer is off, hackers are not able to access the computer or its webcam.

For those of you whose hearts broke as you watched the final traces of your childhood fade along with the last scene of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” fear not, for

J.K. Rowling has heard your cries and provided hope in the form of a website. Pottermore, which launches this October, invites Harry Potter devotees and die-hard fans into the magical world they still long for. Described by the author as “an online experience… the same story with a few crucial additions,” Pottermore allows users to read extensive background material Rowling has “held back” for several years.

According to Guardian News, this unpublished material includes stories of Professor McGonagall’s love for a muggle in her youth, details about wand wood and additional information about each of the Hogwarts houses.

The experience begins with users creating their own magical usernames, allowing them to shop in Diagon Alley, receive a wand and create their own adventure at Hogwarts. Once they enter the school, users will answer a questionnaire that will direct them to their corresponding houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin.

So for those of you still running full speed towards Platform 9-3/4 to try to join Harry, Ron and Hermione, give it a rest and log onto Pottermore. com in October for an easier in-depth look into their fictional lives. The website will be free to join and use, safe for all ages and be the only source where the Harry Potter e-books may finally be purchased.

Apparently those silly Facebook groups we create and “like” in an effort to avoid our homework can actually accomplish a thing or two.

Nickelodeon responded to college students’ complaints about its shows today not living up to the shows of their childhood. In response, the network is airing a segment on their TeenNick network from midnight to 4 a.m. appropriately titled, “The ‘90s Are All That.”

It began at the end of July as reruns of “All That,” “Kenan and Kel,” “Doug” and “Clarissa Explains It All” made their way back into the nostalgia-ridden lives of college students.

According to The New York Times, last summer’s interns at Nickelodeon studios put together a presentation with shows to bring back, pitching the idea to the president of the company. Before anyone could say Nickelodeon, the network’s beloved shows were rotating the late night block and students have found yet another reason to procrastinate on their assignments.

However, before anyone

gets too comfortable watching Repairman-man break something else on “All That,” the network says they are relying on ratings to determine how long they will keep the segment since these shows do not appeal to TeenNick’s current teen and tween demographic. Depending on social media responses and polls on which ‘90s shows we want to watch, Nickelodeon will alternate the shows on the TeenNick segment to meet our inner child’s needs.

So if you are dying to watch Angelica sabotage another one of Tommy’s plans, or if you’re still trying to prove you’re not afraid of the dark, or if you just want to see Rocko living his modern life, tune in to “The ‘90s Are All That” when you’re taking a break from your allnighter and keep “liking” those pesky Facebook groups!

Latest 'Planet of the Apes’ film reboots franchise

Despite beliefs that the most recent edition of the Planet of the Apes film is a remake or a prequel, the Rise of the Planet of the Apes is actually a reboot. Its purpose is to use the original foundation of the film and form a new story line. Regardless, creating a level of anticipation and surprise throughout the film had to have been a challenge because the story had been done already.

James Franco plays the main character alongside the ironically named ape, Caesar, who leads the uprising of the apes. Full of action and emotion, the film has the audience empathizing for the apes and slightly cheering as they cause chaos.

Unlike the 2001 movie Planet of the Apes, the apes did not speak English, though there was some captioned sign language between them that was key

for a handful of scenes. The previous film was based in the future in 2029, and the apes were humanlike with an established government and vast army. They enslave the humans living on the planet. The new film is based in our present time and the only abnormality of the apes is their heightened intelligence.

The 2001 film focuses on a love triangle between the main characters, Leo, played by Mark Wahlberg, another enslaved human, and an ape named Ari, who is against the maltreatment of humans on her planet.

In the new film, Franco’s character, Will, is a scientist struggling between his personal and professional lives as he tries to find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, which his father suffers from. Trials are done on apes to test Will’s medicine, thus unfolding the mayhem.

The new film has a storyline full of subtle references to the earlier film that perfects the story of the Planet of the Apes.

Italian eatery is ideal for students

Few places are available for students to enjoy a delicious pizza made from scratch, but Julian’s Italian Pizzeria Kitchen has everything a college student could ask for, including convenient prices and a great atmosphere. The owner is Julian, a man who grew up in a neighborhood surrounding St. Mary’s along with his wife, Kara, alumna of the university. With the many blessings of their family, the couple opened the pizzeria’s doors to the public in 2006 satisfying customers one day at a time.

For college students, the atmosphere is young and fun. The restaurant has a walk up and order approach, which makes it easy for splitting checks, and still allows customers to have a sit down restaurant experience.

After customers get numbers and pay, the wait staff will bring out meals hot and fast. The staff is welcoming and will not rush students if they wish to stay even after finishing their meal.

Rising starlet and San Antonio native to release first album

San Antonio native Alyssa Bernal is on her way to gaining fame and recognition for her soulful singing and other musical talents.

At the tender age of 3, the talented Bernal began taking her first footsteps toward the industry that would become her lifestyle years later. She began performing publicly her freshman year of high school, but didn’t take her talent seriously until her junior year when she began posting YouTube videos of herself doing covers of songs.

The renowned Pharrell Williams came across her videos and tried to contact her in numerous ways, even going as far as contacting her high school to get in touch with her, but had no luck. It wasn’t until her mother browsed through her MySpace messages and saw the one from Pharell’s record label that Bernal caught her break.

Before she knew it, the high school student was flown to Los Angeles to meet with Pharell and Interscope Records chairman, Jimmy Lovine.

Shortly after, Bernal signed onto Pharrell Williams’ record label, Star Trak Entertainment.

Now 21 years old and more

experienced, Bernal will soon be releasing her first album this October, “In Love Again For the First Time.” Bernal began recording two years ago in London, alongside prominent producer, Martin Terefe. During this seven-week period, she was able to incorporate her own lyrics into the album. Inspired by day-today life, boy disappointments, love, and spontaneous moments, Bernal was able to reflect her happenings into songs.

Bernal mentioned that she wants to write more of her own lyrics and feels most creative late at night.

“Stay,” Bernal’s favorite song on the album, is also the first song she co-wrote with Terefe and Andreas Olsson. With Terefe’s guidance, Bernal formed her own versatile sound.

“It’s hard to say that I stick to just one genre,” Bernal said. “It’s more like a little bit of pop, some jazz, but at the same time, funky and soulful.” Other artists, both from YouTube and those she has met through the label, such as Far East Movement, Pharell, and Jason Mraz have also inspired her. Mraz even helped create her album title.

“I actually started playing guitar because of how much YouTube artists inspired me. I began writing my own lyrics soon after that,” said Bernal.

Recently, she shot her second video, “Soaking Up the Sun,” which will be

released this September.

Although she finds herself having a busy schedule at times doing promotions, shows, and press releases, the San Antonio gal still enjoys the simple things in life and of her hometown. “I love how nice the people in San Antonio are, and of course, the Tex-Mex food!”

Hometown life seems to be very different than the kind of life she lives in Los Angeles, although she admits that she also loves and feels connected to the West Coast city. Even then, nothing seems to compare to hanging out and keeping close connections with her friends as she tries to stay a normal 21 year old.

The young artist enjoys supporting other musicians and listening to live music.

She hopes in the future to collaborate with Taylor Swift and Chris Brown because they are both her age and have diverse musical backgrounds.

Bernal’s first album and her continued success will continue to make San Antonio proud of the up-and-coming starlet.

Associate professor of political science Arturo Vega and his daughter, junior English communication arts major Ariana Vega, will be participating in the annual Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon on Nov. 13. This dynamic fatherdaughter duo find that the best time to come together is when they run together.

Ariana Vega participated in the Rock ‘n’ Roll half marathon her freshman year and the full marathon her sophomore year.

“My dad got me into running when I was 16, and when I was 8 I used to hold a poster for him when he ran the Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon,” Ariana said.

Arturo Vega has been running marathons for 12 years, including nine full marathons and one half marathon. When asked about running with his daughter, Arturo said, “It’s different when you have an adult child running with you. She’s tougher than I am, but as a parent you always have one eye looking out for your child. There is nothing like running with your daughter in a full marathon.”

The Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon is a Boston marathon qualifier.

Ariana has yet to qualify but her father has. “I was so proud of him because that was an amazing accomplishment.”

Running in the Rock ‘n’ Roll marathons all around the world is something that Ariana also hopes to achieve in the future.

University expands with sports complex

To celebrate the launch of construction for the Outdoor Sports Complex, university officials are hosting a groundbreaking ceremony on Sept. 9 at 11 a.m. on the V.J. Keefe Field.

The construction will begin in September and is expected to be completed by December of next year. It will “provide upgraded facilities for student-athletes and fans, such as renovations to the baseball field and construction of new baseball facilities, additional tennis courts, two soccer fields and two softball fields,” according to the Office of University Communications.

Officials decided to move the ceremony from its original date last semester to this semester so that it could be closer to the actual start of construction.

“We wanted the excitement of the start of school to be a part of the groundbreaking celebration,” director of Media Relations Gina Farrell said.

The initial phase of planning the $15.5 million project was completed with the opening of the Alumni Athletics & Convocation Center in 2001. According to University Communications, the AACC’s Bill Greehey Arena provided a state-of-theart indoor facility for the Rattler volleyball and basketball teams. The construction of the complex continues those plans for the campus’ outdoor teams.

The university contributed $9.5 million while an additional grant from Bexar County’s Community Venues Program provided $6 million.

“St. Mary’s is committed to providing facilities that will enhance our studentathletes experiences while also enhancing the quality of life in our community,” Farrell said.

Farrell stated that a softball stadium with locker rooms is being built too.

Members of the university community can expect to see site work and maintenance in the fall, and creation of fields and buildings in the spring.

softball, baseball and men and women’s soccer teams.

“We’ve already had to locate a new facility for all practices and games for the 2011 season. Right now, we are able to practice here but we cannot host any games on our facility,” head women’s soccer coach Corwlyn Ritch said. Ritch stated that a week after the ceremony takes place, all of their practices will be off-site and arrangements were made with Northside Independent School District’s Don Hardin Athletic Complex, located on 7001 Culebra Road, to host practices and games there until mid-October.

The soccer teams are not the only teams on campus being affected by the construction of the complex.

“With the planning and construction of the new Sports Complex, different challenges have arisen making our games and practices a bit tricky,” senior industrial engineering and captain of the men’s soccer team Rodrigo Ramos said. “There hasn’t been much action yet since the construction has not yet begun, but as of now, Coach Que does a good job of keeping us informed regarding important dates, transportation of the temporary facility, and such.”

According to University Communications, campus officials are addressing other disruptions caused by the construction.

Frequent communication and collaboration between the University Police Department, the athletic teams, the student recreational sports department and Physical Plant is necessary in order to minimize disruptions.

“To help ease such disruptions, we expedited the conversion of the old tennis courts near Treadaway Hall into faculty and staff parking, and we have eased some of the restricted times on parking lots near Camino Santa Maria,” University Communications said. “Additionally, we are creating an intramural field near the AT&T Center for Information Technology to accommodate student recreational sports.”

According to Farrell, the disruptions due to the construction will be minimal. Any other information about the construction will be relayed to the university community as needed.

“This is an opportunity for the St. Mary’s community to come together to celebrate the start of the new complex and to thank those who have so generously supported this effort, including donor and Bexar County,” Farrell said.

Philadelphia Eagles After losing in the wild card round of the playoffs the last two seasons, the Eagles hope to advance further this year. The Eagles’ were the big winners this offseason, adding Pro-Bowl cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Nnamdi Asomugha to anchor the defense and quarterback Vince Young as backup to Michael Vick.

Alumna returns to coach on campus

Thirty-two years after graduating from St. Mary’s University and playing for the tennis team, Lisa Dausin has returned as the new men and women’s tennis coach.

Dausin began her career at Southwest Texas University after she graduated from St. Mary’s in 1979. “As a graduate assistant, I coached the women’s team for one year,” Dausin said. “That’s probably the year that it sealed the deal when I knew I wanted to coach. I really enjoyed it.” After this, Dausin would spend 31 years working for Northside Independent School District in various roles, including assistant athletic director for the district. This past year, while teaching at Warren High School in San Antonio, she found out about the opening here for the tennis coach.

“There were some Warren students interested in coming here and being on the team and I guess they were talking to some of the coaches at that time. So I called and inquired and shortly thereafter

I called and it was posted.”

While applying for the job, Dausin considered the impact her job would have on family time.

Dausin’s two sons, one in college and one in high school, are both starting quarterbacks for their respective schools.

“A big part of my decision to retire from public schools was that I found myself at a place where I was watching everybody else’s kids play all their sports and I was missing my own. And the beauty of it is that their football seasons are during our lighter season in our program. So it works nicely, or else I would have not considered it.”

Coaching at the college level after decades at the high school and middle school levels have brought Dausin some challenges she was not expecting, in particular the vast amount of NCAA rules she must follow.

“At my other job, I oversaw UIL rules, and I had those down. But NCAA rules are a whole other animal.

So that has been a challenge, so everyday I’m meeting with Scott Fonger (NCAA compliance officer) making sure I’m not breaking a rule

or about to break a rule.”

The team has been made aware of Dausin’s expectation, but to her, the team’s record is not as important as their readiness level for the conference tournament.

To achieve this, Dausin wants to increase the competitiveness of the team.

“We’re not going to shy away from playing tough teams, because I want to have already seen the toughest teams that are out there before conference has already arrived.”

Even though she has been away for so long, the university as a point of return never left the realm of possibility.

“Quite honestly, 30 years ago when I left St. Mary’s I thought that I would love to come back here and coach a tennis team. And so that thought has always been there. I couldn’t have predicted or planned the progression of things to evolve as they have but they did and so it’s just a really exciting time for me. I’m very excited to be here and to get to do this, and it really has been a dream that you always wonder will happen.”

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE SEASON? “My goals for the season are the Academic All-American and All-Conference again. I would also like to make the All-Region team.”

WHAT HAS BEEN A MOTIVATING FACTOR IN YOUR GAME? “My older brother, Keith, has really motivated me to play better, and so has my competition.”

WHAT DO YOU EXPECT OUT OF YOUR TEAM THIS YEAR? “I would like us to go to regionals and win a tournament.”

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS AFTER COLLEGE GOLF? “I am debating going pro. I plan on having one more internship and going to grad school.”

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT GOLF? “The best part about golf is shooting your lowest score ever. And playing well for a full 18 holes is a very satisfying feeling.”

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE ABOUT GOLF? “Golf itself is the biggest challenge. The hardest thing about golf is working hard for weeks and playing badly at a tournament, then having to go back out onto the range to fix your problem.”

HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR SCHOOL WORK AND GOLF? “I try to let teachers know when I’ll be gone. Late night studying in the van also helps on the way home from a tournament. I always stay in touch with professors to keep the communication going.”

HOW DO YOU PREPARE YOURSELF FOR AN UPCOMING TOURNAMENT? “I try to practice hard beforehand and familiarize myself with the course. I also come up with a game plan of how I want to play the course.”

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT GOLF? “It is so individual.

You don’t have anyone to blame your failures on and you get to take all of the credit for your success.”

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE ABOUT GOLF? “The physical side because technique is tough. It is also stressful because there are a lot of long rounds in college golf. You have to have mental stamina to be able to concentrate for ten hours at a time.”

New blood and a new field bring fearless determination to St. Mary’s soccer

The Rattler soccer teams kick off this semester with a drive for a successful season, which begins when both teams face the University of Houston-Victoria on Sept. 1.

The players and coaches have high spirits and confidence in their abilities to achieve their goal season.

Jeremiah Narvaez, assistant coach for both teams, is firm about the high capabilities of the players.

“With both teams, our goal is to win,” Narvaez said. “That’s our expectation. For both teams, they’re reasonable expectations.”

Que Willis, head coach for the men’s team, has similarly high expectations.

He explains, “I’m expecting success. We do not want to just be competitive. We want results.”

Likewise, players on both the men’s and women’s teams are confident.

“We have a pretty strong team. We’re fearless,” said Ashley Condrin, senior exercise and sports science major.

The men’s team is particularly undaunted.

“Overall, I’m pretty confident. I think the team chemistry that we have, and the work ethic that every single one of these guys is bringing in is definitely a winning attitude,” said Rodrigo Ramos, senior industrial engineering major and team captain.

Although expectations are high, challenges await the players. Both teams have many freshmen joining the teams.

“It’s a lot of new faces, and obviously with a lot of new faces you have some concerns,” said Coach Willis.

As a senior veteran player, Condrin is also concerned. “It’s hard having freshmen come in. It changes the chemistry.”

Some starters and key players are no longer part of the team this year, but Ramos sees this as “an opportunity for new leaders to step up.”

Preparing for the season is more difficult than usual this year since the University’s soccer field will be renovated soon. These renovations are forcing all home games and practice sessions to take place at the Northside Independent School Stadium. However, the teams are willing to accept this without allowing it to affect their motivation.

Willis, “like not being able to sit in the locker room before practice.

But these guys are adults.”

But even with their confidence, there is still some concern.

“The fear is that we may be unprepared,” Narvaez explains.

“But that’s our job as coaches. We need to make sure we eliminate that fear by conditioning them and making sure they are at a proper fitness level, that they are technically sound, and tactically aware.”

The final challenge the teams face is the possibility of less fan support. The home games taking place in a new location will prove difficult for spectators, who sometimes lack transportation.

Keep the Rattler’s soccer teams alive and kicking by supporting them this season. The women’s team plays at 2 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 4 p.m. on Sept. 1 at Northside ISD Soccer Stadium.
