The St. Mary’s University Alumni Association announced the cancellation of Fiesta Oyster Bake 2021 due to the rising COVID-19 cases in San Antonio. This is the second year t h e annual spring event is canceled as a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. “I am sad to announce that we are canceling Fiesta Oyster Bake 2021 due to the substantial numbers of COVID-19 cases in our region,” president of the association Joe Vela Jr., said in the association’s release. University executive director of alumni relations Pete Hansen said the association met with the Fiesta San Antonio Commission and Johns Hopkins professor of surgery Martin “Marty” Makary for months before announcing the decision on Jan. 22. health by adapting this year’s Fiesta Oyster Bake plans.” Fiesta Oyster Bake is the association’s largest fundraiser, drawing in 60,000 to 70,000 attendees and generating an estimated $500,000 for scholarships and programs annually. The association’s scholarship endowment currently aids 70 students. “Canceling the event hurts us by not being able to put money into the endowment,” Hansen said. “We’ve been blessed to have the resources to estor y Demi B b ic h be able to withstand two [canceled] p Gra Oyster Bakes in a row but we definitely don’t want to miss any more.” E v e n w i t h o u t the annual revenue of Oyster Bake, H a n s e n said the association will continue to be able to support students through the scholarship endowment, “We did help the campus this Photo courtesy of @StMarysU past summer, making a everybody.
