the Government Shutdown

and its effect on St. mary’s students

Amidst growing concern from students across the nation, the government shutdown will not have a significant impact on students’ financial aid. The Department of Education, which has oversight on Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, is unaffected by the shutdown. However, there are still questions that can be answered.

Federal student loan services are still running, so students can still make payments and receive customer service from them, if needed. The shutdown will not have major impact on students’ financial aid, however, there are special cases that have been reported. Some have reported having trouble receiving documents from the Internal Revenue Service, or IRS, because the offices are closed. Specifically, USAToday reported

on a woman, who was recently married, having this issue. However, this was a special case that dealt with a change of status and is not the case for the majority of the student population. “There are some concerns in two areas submission of FAFSA’s and verification paperwork,” said Dr. Rosalind Alderman, vice provost of enrollment management. According to Alderman, there is less of a chance for students being selected for

verification by using the IRS data retrieval tool. If a student is having verification issues, they may run into problems retrieving necessary documents. The government revised a provision so now FAFSA is accepting signed copies of tax returns. Emergency funding is available for students, which deals with non-direct university expenses, meaning events that students conclude may impede there progression in school, should prompt them CONTINUED ON PG. 2
