SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH: St. Mary’s draws attention to the subject on campus

LOUIE DIAZ NEWS EDITOR

With the help of a $300,000 grant from the Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women (OVAW) received in 2017, St. Mary’s is developing programs to combat sexual assault and to raise awareness of domestic violence prevention. According to the Castro House, a website from the office of congressman Joaquin Castro, “the campus program enhances victim safety, provides services for victims, and supports efforts to hold offenders accountable.” Rattlers Against Sexual Violence, or

RASV, is the only office officially funded by the grant. Other offices across campus are involved in implementing the efforts coordinated by the RASV. The program “Think about it” freshman have to take will be replaced by the program “U got this” which focuses heavily on

bystander intervention for the incoming class of 2019. The new program has been tested by a select number of students and received good feedback. “This one [program] is newer and includes more current and relevant facts that students these days would want to know about,” Barrie said. Diana Rocha Ramos, senior business management and Spanish major, has been working closely with Barrie since last September. Ramos played a crucial role in developing the bystander intervention training. She has also been conducting CONTINUED ON PG. 2
