Winning traditions influence softball team’s success

Mirroring a victorious 2015 season, the softball team begins the new season with a superregional title as motivation. The team is reconstructing with many new faces. KIMBERLY ARRIETA SPORTS EDITOR

The Rattler softball team is coming into the 2016 season after one of their best seasons since 2005. The team is currently ranked 12th in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association for the preseason. The team faced Colorado Mines for the season home opener last week. The team scored late into the game in the fifth inning, and player to watch freshman forensic science major Raynelle Nash gave the team the lead by scoring two runs. The team had eight players graduate last semester, each of which played an important role in the success of last season’s team. The softball team has new faces on the roster, now the question is how to create the best lineup to compete and bring home victories. “We need to take it one day at a time and try to build our team each day. We have expectations for our girls and we’re going to make sure they develop the newness. We have quite a few new faces that are going to be on the line up. We graduated eight seniors that played a really big part.” Head softball coach Donna Fields said. Professor offers students opportunites to help refugees BLAKE VERA NEWS EDITOR

This semester, students have the opportunity to help some of the most marginalized individuals in the world refugees. The term refugee has been used frequently since last semester, when news of the Syrian Refugee Crisis sparked polarizing opinions across the country. Regardless of where students may fall politically, the Marianist values associated with St. Mary’s call some to help those who have left everything to become part of a new community. These opportunities range from helping refugees with the logistical steps of resettlement, to becoming political

and legal experts. Associate professor of political science and associate Dean of Students and Curricular Affairs for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Dr. Celine Jacquemin, weighed in on the situation by sharing her experience with helping marginalized groups around the world. This French-born academic gives students who want to get more involved the opportunity to help refugees who are resettling in the San Antonio area. Dr. Jacquemin has worked with numerous organizations, gaining useful experience in subjects relating to developing countries and the socio-political situations that exist within them. Her work in Sub-Saharan

Africa has made her an expert in the area of groups that have had to flee their countries—in particular by studying the Rwandan genocide. She says, “The most vulnerable people in society are refugees because they are stateless. They have no country or government to protect them from whatever is going on in their homeland and thus must find a new home.” According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, UNHCR, there are currently over 4.5 million registered Syrian refugees. While the Syrian Refugee Crisis first made headlines last semester, it is CONTINUED ON PG. 3
