DISASTER RELIEF CLUB

Many of you have heard about the DRC and you might be somewhat familiar with them. But if you’re wondering what it’s all about, here is an overview: The DRC works with organizations to provide aid mainly for those who are affected by natural disasters. It also raises awareness in ICS about the disasters that are affecting the world today and troubling its inhabitants. Krista Hayden, one of the leaders of the club mentioned that she felt one of the club’s biggest accomplishments was the free dress day that was held recently, it was very successful. They raised a lot of money which also provides them with

feedback because now they know to continue doing this. In her opinion one of the goals of the club is to, “spread awareness in a way people can understand disasters and relate with them.� People should not just be empathetic towards the situation but take action.

The current disaster the club is working on relieving are the floods in Laos. The club is planning to design Mom and Dad ICS t-shirts as well as customized ICS duffel bags, to raise money for these floods. And another creative fundraising idea they have is selling bouquets of flowers in front of the PAC during major performances, so people can buy them for those they would like to congratulate.

When asked what improvements could be made to the club, Krista emphasised that she wants to provide a better channel for people to help instead of just donating money.

serv ice What is servICE?

ServICE is basically a multi-school conference, and ICE is our primary objective - Inspire, Connect, and Empower. The entire process is mostly student-led. There are usually around 14-15 schools from all around Bangkok.

We try to inspire students by going to the conference, learning about modern-day issues, and having them connect and build relationships with students from other schools. Then students use these relationships to go to the final step, Empower, where students and the community make changes and put emphasis on collaborating with others.

Can you describe what happens at ServICE?

First, we “burst bulles”, where we leave our usual group and participate in community service with other schools.

We have things called keynotes, where students go up on stage and discuss their projects, and simulations every year, which involves ¼ of the entire group of students depending on the size of the simulation; last year we had a simulation about refugees that made a lasting impact on the students. There are also a lot of how-to’s - where the students go to different classrooms and present their topics, issues, or processes.

I think last year a lot of students talked about how to fundraise, and others presented the method of how their school was helping refugees. We’ve had many students from ICS join this process, including DRC. Sometimes NGOs and other groups are invited to share as well. Finally, the students get a chance to create their own topics by signing up and getting other students to collaborate with them.

Are there any memorable projects you’ve seen through the years?

A few years back, Asia Weimer presented as part of the keynotes, and she spoke of her Capstone about helping refugees and what it’s like to be a refugee in Thailand. Coleman Weimer also talked about his Capstone, which was about the coffee industry and the different stages in production. Two years ago, there was a project about meat and how it could grow scarce, which was also a very memorable and interesting point of view.

What’s one thing you want students to take away from ServICE? I hope students are inspired to become empowered. I want them to leave feeling motivated to make a change, and feel confident that they are capable of bringing it about. Next year ICS is hosting ServICE, so I definitely hope more students will participate!

chess club

The Chess Club doesn’t just play chess, but play a variety, whether that be atomic chess, bughouse, bullet, blitz, or rapid. They focus on teaching chess principles and tactics through matches against one another and hopes to compete in tournaments later in the year as well as host one within ICS. Agrim, a fellow member of the club, shares a piece of his story.

When and where does the chess club meet?

The chess club meets on Thursdays and Fridays from 14:30 - 15:30 in Mr. Mark S’s room, HS201a. Members do not necessarily have to join on both days -join on days you are available.

Has ICS participated in any chess tournaments?

ICS has not participated in chess tournaments as of yet, but we are planning to participate in tournaments later on in the year.

What kinds of chess do you play?

What is your background regarding chess, and do you enjoy it?

I started playing chess back when I was in first grade after my father taught me to play. However, I stopped playing soon thereafter. I started playing again after entering high school and have enjoyed it ever since.

What do you do in the club?

We usually explore chess puzzles, chess principles, analyze chess games, and, of course, we play chess against one another.

There are various kinds that we play, such as regular chess, atomic chess, bughouse, and of course in various time formats, such as bullet, blitz, and rapid.

What advice would you give to new chess players?

I would advise new chess players to worry less about memorizing a lot of openings and focus more on improving their middle and end games. Focus on learning chess principles and tactics and know one or two openings. Chess really comes alive when you understand its principles and how to apply them.

Please introduce yourself!

Hello! My name is Mimi Kim, and I am currently a senior. I am the founder of the dance club!

DANCE CLUB

Why and how did you start the dance club?

Back in my sophomore year, I was trying to find a dance club to join, but I realized that our school did not offer any dance clubs that met the interests of many students – K-Pop for example. Yes, we did have the ballet and jazz club, but that wasn’t exactly what I was looking for. I was more interested in K-Pop and cover dances, so I talked to students who I knew would be interested in joining the club if I made one. Most students I talked to said they’d love to join a cover dance club if we had one, so we went and talked to Mr. Luc, found a supervisor, and signed some papers to get our club approved. I also thought that we could make a group that could communicate with one another regardless of what grade they’re in.

What does the dance club do?

Our group is like a cover dance club for ICS students who are passionate about dancing to come together and choreographing a dance through weeks of practice.

Also, we talk about our lives and just about anything before our actual practice.

One memorable event?

Preparations for auditions are always the best part of the year. During our dance sessions, we always prepare for our upcoming events. I remember we had a chance to see students who are usually shy at school come with their friends and blow our minds at the end of their performance.

What are some pros and cons of the club?

I think we work really well together and always attend the club meetings. Everyone puts their best effort on every cover dance we do, which makes us all happy. Also, everyone is very honest when they share their thoughts. However, even though we have our own group chat, I feel like we sometimes do not communicate as much as we should. There are people missing our meeting almost every week, which makes it harder for others since we have to slow down the pace when we practice. Don’t get me wrong, I sometimes miss the practice as well!

Anything final comments for the club members?

Thank you guys, for always putting up with us two. We hope to make this year - our last year - an unforgettable and amazing year for everyone.

Debate is an art of persuasion used by everyone, whether they’re political figures or students. We find ourselves casually debating without even noticing. For example, proving our stance to teachers on why our answer is correct, is more or less considered debating. Debate provides students with the opportunity to develop their skills in information research, critical thinking, organization, persuasion, and communication when discussing concepts and perspectives about the world we live in.

Pann, a sophomore, has gotten into the shortlist for the Thailand Debate National Team, in which only thirteen people are accepted nationwide. Moreover, he, along with the help of a few others, founded the ICS debate club, which currently teaches and practices debate. He explains, “Our long-term goal is to send the ICS debate teams to tournaments both locally (in Thailand) and internationally. Debate isn’t arguing why your opposition is wrong, but it’s about proving why you’re correct.”

With all of Pann and his teammates’ accomplishments, they are never hesitant to both compliment and criticize their clubmates in ways that improve club members’ performances in terms of speech, presentation, and competition. Pann encourages more students join the club for the future: “Debating can be fairly nerve-wracking, but don’t make that stop you - it’ll be worth it.”

MODEL UNITE An extracurricular prominent for its dignified initiative, Model United Nations, simulating the UN, encourages students to formulate resolutions addressing real-world issues. Let’s hear more about the club and what it does from one of ICS’ very own MUN members, Erica!

Can you tell us a little about MUN? MUN, just as its name suggests, focuses on simulating what occurs in actual UN conferences regarding prevalent worldwide conflicts and issues, such as human rights, environmental degradation, and others.

What is a typical MUN conference like?

What originally drove you to be involved with MUN?

How has MUN impacted you?

It keeps me updated with the happenings of the world, I guess. I wasn’t the type of person to be particularly interested in global issues and news, and I can’t say I am now, but it’s definitely beneficial to be aware of what’s going on around you.

What is your most and least favorite thing about the conferences?

I can’t say I have a specific element I like or dislike, but when the debate gets really intense, conferences tend to be more memorable and entertaining. On the other hand, when people aren’t very active or passionate about the topic, it just turns into a very disappointing conference.

If you can sum up your experience in one word, what would it be?

Money. I’ve been Treasurer for quite a while, so that’s really all I can think of.

What would you like to say to anyone interested in joining MUN? Any word of advice?

I know that many people choose to avoid MUN due to its intimidating aura and complex procedures. It’s really not that terrifying, though - it’s just debate with a lot of extra fancy phrases to remember. If you’re striving to learn politics or law, I’d say give it a shot. And then, well—the college application.

I’m Time, also known as the “Photographer.” I graduated from ICS back in 2016. I’m currently studying at the University of Washington, majoring in Industrial and Systems Engineering.

In what way is ICS memorable to you?

The people that I got to hang around with made ICS memorable to me.

They always find a way to make me smile.

What is your favorite thing about ICS?

My favorite thing about ICS is how close-knit the community is.

What were some of your favorite classes at ICS?

My favorite classes include AP Chemistry, AP Psychology, and AP Calculus mainly because they challenged me to do my best!

How has ICS contributed to the person you are today?

ICS has taught me to treat other people in the kindest way possible. The teachers and friends here are also very supportive of my decisions.

Describe ICS in 3 words.

My second home.

What advice would you give to ICS students?

Don’t forget to take time off and relax a bit during your senior year.

How is life in DC compared to Thailand?

I could not ask for a better city to study in, to be honest. The size, the atmosphere, the opportunity—all are at the sweet spot. However, DC is also the antithesis of Bangkok. Things are expensive, and the spontaneity that Bangkok offers just can’t be found here, and I kind of miss that.

How has university life affected you?

Being at Georgetown has definitely given me a taste of being an adult (a bit cliché, but still). Because there are so many things going on, having so many choices to make has just made me an entirely new person — I never imagined I would’ve made the decision to skip my HS class because I wanted to see a politician speak on campus.

If you could return to Thailand again, what’s one thing you would do?

Have a bowl (or two) of Parkland noodles.

Describe your senior year in three words.

Senioritis. Was. Real.

What was your most memorable experience at ICS?

All the SALT Trips and Senior Trip. I would pay to relive those again.

If you had to do high school all over again, would you change anything?

I regret a bit not having gotten to know a lot of people that well— teachers, upperclassmen, classmates, and underclassmen.

Who is your main inspiration in life?

Anyone who is looking to achieve something bigger than themselves.

Any final comments you would like to say to all the students reading this?

I think this interview has been a bunch of tired clichés, and I hate it. But, during these 4 years, find something you really, really enjoy doing. There is going to be that one day when everybody lets you down, and that thing you enjoy—it’s going to make things better (along with your college application).

T: Hi, my name is Tayida. This is my first year in high school, and I'm the rep for the class of 2022.

K: Hello, my name is Kan, and I am also the class of 2022’s rep.

What is one thing most people would be surprised to learn about you?

to mix them all into one good decision.

K: I’ve always wanted to know what leading a large group of fellow students would be like. I also want to be able to listen to other people’s ideas.

What is one thing you wish you would’ve known before running for class representative?

T: I’ve been dancing since the age of three.

K: I started learning and playing the piano when I was three.

T: I wish I knew that it wasn’t as stressful as I had imagined.

K: I agree, it’s far less stressful than I thought.

What motivated you to run for the position of class representative?

How would you describe the Class of 2022?

T: I’ve always enjoyed coordinating different groups of people together to accomplish one goal. I love listening to different people's ideas and brainstorming

T: We’re really chill, goofy, forgiving, and light hearted.

K: We’re also really very hardworking, kind-hearted, intelligent, and talented.

What is your main goal to accomplish as a class representative?

T: I just want to be the most productive class rep I can possibly be, and I want to make sure that everyone’s voices are heard. I would also like to start things early so that whoever is incharge in the years to come won’t have to deal with the extra stress.

K: As for me, I also want to be as productive as I can be, as well as building a strong foundation for the class of 2022 for the years to come.

Are there any ICS events in particular that are you looking forward to?

T: I’m looking forward to ICS got talent, because I know there's a lot of talent and I want to see all the funny acts!

K: I’m excited for Lock-In, because it's the only opportunity for students to stay up overnight.

For those who don’t know you, could you please give a brief introduction of yourself?

Sure! I’m Polly, and I’m a freshman this year. Outside of school hours, I enjoy practicing violin, debating, reading good books, and indulging in Tex-Mex food.

How has freshman year been for you?

Very interesting and exciting! There are so many clubs to join and things to do. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the smoothest start because I missed my first week to complete a tour in Europe, but my teachers and friends supported me throughout. So far, everything is alright.

If you could have the answer to any one question, what would your question be?

encouraged me, especially when things get difficult.

What motivates you to keep practicing violin?

I believe that music empowers people when words are simply not enough.

Music was my plane ticket to countries far away; it was the handshake that started friendships with people around the world. I play violin because I love the impact it makes on people.

Where do you find the best tacos in Bangkok?!

When were you first introduced to the violin?

About eight years ago, I watched Itzhak Perlman perform on YouTube. I wanted to play just like him! I am so lucky that my mentors and parents have always

What is your biggest accomplishment?

Two summers ago, my youth orchestra competed in the international Summa Cum Laude Competition in Vienna, Austria. We brought home first place as the first Thai orchestra to do so. Last summer, a youth orchestra from Spain invited us to go on tour together. That was super cool! I’m so happy for the memories and friendships I’ve built during the process.

Finally, any words of advice to people who want to start playing violin?

For me, inspiration is a big help when overcoming difficulties.

Having role models, friendships with other musicians, and strong relationships with teachers keeps me focused on my goals. Most importantly, don’t forget to have fun!

What activities do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I generally like to surf the internet.

I like playing various sorts of video games, and as a musical nerd, I love just singing random songs.

It is clear that you have a strong passion for acting in ICS’s plays.

In your opinion, how has acting influenced who you are today?

I think it gave me a sort of confidence I had previously just deprived of when I was younger.

I have a certain confidence to actually have a basic conversation now, unlike previously before in which I was even more erratic with my behavior. I think being in musicals and plays also shaped me in terms of characteristics, especially when I get a certain character, an aspect of them gets absorbed into my daily life. I’d say it’s really enjoyable and interesting.

How has sophomore year been for you?

You know how they say the further you progress in school the more difficult it gets? Yeah, I’m just going to state that I do not even want to wonder about how fun my junior year is going to be.

What is the best part about being a student at ICS?

I’d say our community is one of the strongest in Thailand. Perhaps it is the constant trips we make like SALT Trip that makes the whole school closer to each other. Our

teachers are quite supportive, so I feel like due to this I have a high incentive to try to do my best in my academic goals.

What classes have you found to be particularly hard this year and why?

Both of my AP courses is what’s killing me; AP World and AP Bio. I just hope that I only find it difficult due to how much reading is required, and not because I like to procrastinate at all (coughs).

Do you have any role models in your life? If so, what makes them important to you?

This title would have to go to a teacher who goes by the nickname “Mr. G”. I guess it’s just because he’s quite literally talented in so many fields, so I aspire to be a professional just like him. Mr. G makes things like musicals and school plays so enthralling, but at the same time teaches me new aspects both in the drama field and just general knowledge.

In your opinion, what one word describes you the most?

Maniac, I see myself as being extremely energetic especially when I am passionate about a particular topic. I’m sure many people know how crazy I can truly be.

Is water actually wet?

Finally, do you have advice you would like to give for future sophomores reading this article?

Even if you do not need a certain class to use for sending yourself to a college right now but you are interested in it, take the course!

Even though I say that AP World and AP Biology are extremely hard and require immense work, I have actually learned a lot and have gained all types of knowledge I was able to use outside of class. If it seems interesting, just take the course. You might be able to find yourself leaning for a new career you are even more interested that way.

Hi, my name is Aree Sanchez, and I’m in 10th grade.

How are your classes so far?

I like most of my classes, especially British Literature with Mr. Will. Mr. Will is really funny, and the class is pretty interesting. I particularly like the class dynamic we have as well. It’s not like I enjoy writing or anything, but I like the atmosphere we have!

What extracurricular activities are you doing this year?

I’ve been playing volleyball, which is extremely fun. I am also going to participate in the ServICE conference.

What do you like doing in your free time?

I sing a lot during my free time. Recently, I have started learning the guitar, so I have been trying to spend more time practicing as well. Other times, I play with the kids at my mom’s orphanage.

How’s sophomore year in general?

It is really stressful so far. We have projects and tests at least every other day, making it a lot more overwhelming than what I had expected.

Any advice for future sophomores?

Don’t feel bad as long as you try your best. Also, don’t pull overnighters. Make sure you get enough sleep, especially before tests. Don’t cram till late, or it’s just more likely for you not to do well because you’ll be extra tired.

What does being a senior mean to you?

Scraping my motivation together to do my school work, carefully cataloguing every last moments with my friends, constantly regretting all the things I’ve missed, berating myself for all the things I’m not doing, neatly wrapping up my years of hard work and investment into a couple of measly papers, and looking forward to a new life of strange places.

What are you looking forward to this year?

Senior trip!

How have your experiences in ICS impacted you?

ICS has definitely given me a wider perspective of the world and the people in it. Through ICS, I am much more

aware of the different beliefs and values guiding this world and am able to appreciate and cherish its diversity.

Any memorable events?

This is weird and not really an event, but I really love those long bus rides when we’re going on trips. I love the times we spend cuddled up in our bus seats, definitely in some life-threatening arrangement, listening to music too loud, playing games, laughing, and stuffing ourselves full.

Favorite subject and why?

These change every year, depending on the teacher, but Strings has always been a class I’ve enjoyed. Making music with other people and the level of cooperation, contemplation, and communication it requires is beautiful.

What do you look forward to in college?

I look forward to getting to know new people, learning about the world, and getting to know myself better.

Do you have any advice for the juniors or underclassmen that await the senior role?

Don’t be scared to stretch yourself a little too thin. Maybe not to the point where you’re frantic and nervous all the time, but sometimes there’s joy in the mindlessness of overworking. And even if it may be difficult and so, so frustrating to do so much, when it’s over, you’ll be able to take credit for all your hard work and experience. Be grateful that you can do so much in a safe and caring environment like ICS. Take advantage of the clubs, classes, connections, teachers, and people ICS has to offer. Just don’t kill yourself while doing so.

The varsity boys and girls soccer literally “kicked off ” the 2018-19 school year with excitement and anticipation for everyone in the school. Being the varsity boys soccer manager this year, I was heavily involved in the boys’ program by being the manager and Mr. George’s personal servant (along with KK).

The season started with a bang, winning two games in a row with blowout scores at home.

The new and young players who have just moved up from the JV squad were doing well and were looking forward to their first season as a varsity ICS soccer player. The veterans, too, were confident of a solid season after their dominating performance during spirit day. Following that, however, was a season of ups and downs that left the team competing for the plate in BISAC. Although it wasn’t the optimum position to be in, the coaches and everyone in the team motivated each other to compete one final time to win the division - and win the division they did.

With two wins over Shrewsbury and ASB, the varsity boys soccer team won the plate and emerged victorious on BISAC day. With one of the shortest soccer seasons ever, the boys did not have much of a chance to redeem themselves during the season, but did so in the tournament.

Shawn (Hyunwoo) Koh, a leading scorer and the captain of the team, gives his thoughts on the season and the new players who will be the future of ICS soccer.

“Despite the fact that there were many empty spaces left by the graduating seniors of the previous year, we were able to fill the gaps with new players this year and have a wholesome soccer season. I was impressed by the determination and grit of the younger members of the team even though it probably wasn’t the best starting season for them either.”

The girl’s soccer season looked pretty similar to the guys’ as well. They were able to compete fiercely and win some of their games with clear victories. Other times, their losses were ones where the scores were neck and neck, leaving them disappointed as they walked off the pitch.

The team had won most of their friendly games but only 1 that mattered for their league, leaving them in competition for the plate like the varsity boys team.

Pin, a key player in the team, said, “The team had a lot of potential, but sometimes faced difficulties due to bad luck.

This year concludes the soccer careers of many seniors on the team, including my own. It went by pretty quickly, and there were ups and downs along the way. But in the end, we finished strong as a team like we always do.” The girl’s soccer team won the plate in BISAC in a similar fashion to the boys and came out on top of their division.

As the seniors of this year depart, the future of ICS athletics remains uncertain. The future soccer players of both the boys and girls team will have to step up to fill in the large gaps left by the graduating athletes of 2019. It is both an exciting and stimulating thing to look forward to. We can only hope that the legacies of the seniors live on in the underclassmen and that they are able to carry it and excel past their predecessors in their performance next year.
