Here, I CAN.

What skills does my child need to aqcuire steady work? Who can support my student into young adulthood? Is my child college bound?

TQS HIGH SCHOOL prepares young adults

with complex challenges for bright futures as they explore opportunities in the workforce, continued education, and independent living.

Dear Mom & Dad, I know you’re worried about me. You think about my future all the time. You want to make sure I’m happy ... and secure ... and fulfilled. You want to know that I’m going to be ok. I know that you see the statistics — that students with learning disabilities are 3x more likely to drop out of high school, and that only 36% of young adults with ASD attend any post-secondary school — and you feel overwhelmed. Will I go to college? Will I be able to get a steady job? Will I have the support I need to navigate young adulthood? I know that dealing with these worries can be a lot. But I also want you to know that you don’t have to face them by yourself. Because here, at The Quaker School at Horsham, you’re not alone — and neither am I. This is a place that understands what it takes for young adults with complex challenges to transition into adulthood. It’s where students like me can discover their goals and passions, and make a plan for the future. It’s where teachers and staff believe in us, and empower us to let our inner Light shine. You want me to succeed, Mom and Dad. To be confident, and purposeful. To be myself. And I want to show you that here, I CAN.

Personal OUTCOMES I CAN … be happy and fulfilled. The Quaker School at Horsham’s High School is the ideal place for young adults with complex challenges to discover their unique potential and gain confidence in their abilities. Each student is paired with a personal advisor under a coaching model where adults are the advocates and drivers for the student’s goals. Here, every High School student receives the skills and support they need to shine bright in their future path.

TQS High School graduates: •

Have self-worth

•

Advocate for themselves

•

Feel secure in the future

“We thank you for your caring culture, patience and joy. It is wonderful that despite challenges to learn, our child still enjoys going to school. We are grateful for a team that helps him have a positive path.” — Parents of 8th Grader

SPOTLIGHT ON: INTERVENTION TQS High School is unique in that our course of study remains intervention-focused through graduation — as opposed to typical environments, where students transition to content-focused academics in high school. The benefit: TQS High School faculty and staff regularly track student progress and implement research-based instructional approaches to address specific skill deficits. Project-Based Learning will ensure students still meet all state academic requirements while getting the intense reading, writing, math and executive functioning interventions they need.

SPOTLIGHT ON: HEALTH & SOCIAL SKILLS Health and wellness are major components of the High School curriculum. Students learn self-management, social awareness, and relationship skills, as well as personal health and wellness such as human sexuality, disease prevention, drug awareness, and personal safety. Health-related fitness is also a goal for all students. Students learn teamwork, cooperation, decision-making skills, sportsmanship, and leadership skills. Areas of study include team and lifetime sports, yoga, cooperation activities, and physical fitness.

Social OUTCOMES I CAN … form meaningful relationships. At TQS High School, students embrace the Quaker principles of tolerance, equality, and spirituality, creating a learning environment that is flexible, challenging, and understanding. Students connect with caring faculty and staff, as well as their peers, to experience the joys of young adulthood in a safe, nurturing community.

TQS High School graduates: •

Embrace differences

•

Engage in trusting relationships

•

Express compassion and understanding

“The Quaker School students are why I enjoy what I do. They motivate me to teach and to achieve my goals so they can achieve theirs.” — Lisa VanDerHorn, Teacher

Academic OUTCOMES I CAN … achieve my own success. TQS High School not only keeps students from falling further behind, but also helps them make impressive personal progress. Our curriculum includes core english, math, science, history and humanities courses, as well as electives and affinities — special programs that allow High School students to pursue their passions, use adult-world communication and organizational skills, and become independent learners. Various exciting activities and events — like mock elections, field trips, and internships — keep High School students engaged in learning throughout the year.

TQS High School graduates: •

Apply skills and strategies

•

Creatively problem-solve

•

Attain individual success

“I’ve been at TQS for three years and was so happy when I was told about the High School because now I can stay and graduate with my friends. I’m excited about doing and learning new things like the Rotary meeting and lunch I went to a couple of months ago. I’m even starting to think that I may want to go to college after I graduate from TQS.” — Current 7th Grade Student

SPOTLIGHT ON: BUSINESS LITERACY One of the biggest factors in a student’s decision to drop out of high school stems from their inability to see how their education impacts their daily and future lives — which is why employment literacy is a key component of our High School program. Students learn about various jobs in their community, as well as educational paths available through community colleges, four-year colleges and vocational programs. Professional speakers, visits to multiple higher education schools, workplace tours and internships, and career coaching connect classroom learning with tangible career paths.

So, Mom & Dad ... This is the place — the one that’s going to help me be me. The one that’s going to allow me to see what’s next. The one that’s going to believe in me as much as you do. I know I may not show it all the time, but I appreciate you. I know how hard you work for me. And I’m thankful that you’re doing everything you can to make my future shine.

I CAN do this … because of TQS High School, and because of YOU.
