Pep Rally 2024

by

On Friday, September 27, 2024, Newfield kicked off the Homecoming celebrations with the annual Pep Rally. It was a beautiful, hot, and sunny day which allowed for our Pep Rally to take place outside. For many sophomores and juniors, this was their first ever Newfield High School Pep rally due to poor weather conditions in previous years and they all were finally so thrilled to experience the magic of Pep Rally. The stands were filled with students and faculty showing off their school spirit and enthusiasm as the event began. Now, it wouldn’t been a pep rally without our incredible mascot, the Wolverine, who hyped up the student section and was even seen busting a move to Usher as the stands were starting to fill with students. To open the event, our very own Select Vocal Ensemble performed the Star Spangled Banner and even had members from multiple grades perform the accompanying sign language to it. From there, all the fall athletes were announced

one by one as the crowd erupted with cheers from the faculty and the athletes’ peers. There were even special performances by Newfield’s Varsity Kickline and Cheerleaders. Overall, it was a wonderful experience for everyone watching from the stands as well as those involved; you could tell from the smiling faces at its conclusion that everyone enjoyed it and had a great time.

Trick or Treat Street 2024

Newfield High School held its annual Trick or Treat Street on Friday, October 25, 2024. Colossal crowds attended this much-anticipated event, which transformed the halls of Newfield into a spectacular spookfest. Costumed children and adults alike filled the school, excited for a terrifying time. A variety of clubs and honor societies participated in making this night truly memorable with fun games, activities, face painting, and, of course, copious amounts of candy. The Leaders Club, each Class Council, G.O., the Environmental Club, and the Tri-M, Thespian, and Art Honor Societies, among others, all worked to make Trick or Treat Street special for those who were present. And naturally, the National Honor Society, which runs the event, masterfully converted the library into a haunted house. This year’s theme was Cowboys vs. Zombies, and all student volunteers were decked out in an impressive array of Western outfits and creepy makeup, applied by cosmetology students. Additionally, the tickets cost $3 for children and $5 for adults, and admission was free for kids 2 and under. All proceeds went to the National Honor Society, and they were able to raise more than $5,000 for scholarships! Didn’t have the chance to get involved this year? Be sure to contribute next fall to make 2025’s fundraiser even more successful!

PowderPuff Game 2024

Under the stadium lights, the energy wasn’t from the usual football team it was our annual Powder Puff game, where the roles were reversed, and pure chaos took over the field. This wasn’t just any game it was the seniors versus the juniors on one half of the field, while the sophomores and freshmen were locked in their own battle on the other. With two games happening side by side, the field was buzzing with excitement and a whole lot of friendly competition.

The seniors and juniors took the field in their colored jerseys and eye black, full of determination, while the sophomores and freshmen were equally focused on their half of the field. The stands were packed with students, teachers, and parents, all eager to see how the night would unfold. On the sidelines, the boys, dressed up as cheerleaders, were almost as much of a spectacle as the games themselves. Their attempts at stunts and cheers had everyone cracking up, adding to the fun atmosphere.

On both sides of the field, the games were filled with wild plays, fumbles, and plenty of laughter. You could hear shouts of encouragement, bursts of laughter, and the occasional cheer from the crowd as everyone got caught up in the fun.

Even though there were plenty of competitive moments, the whole event had an easygoing, playful vibe. The real highlight was seeing everyone come together, whether they were playing, cheering, or just enjoying the spectacle from the stands. It was a night where we got to step outside our usual roles and have fun in a way that brought the whole school community together.

By the end of the night, it wasn’t about the score or who won it was about the laughter, the ridiculous plays, and the fact that, for a couple of hours, we all got to do something completely different. Powder Puff reminded us that school spirit isn't just about competition; it’s about the memories we make together. And in that sense, we all walked away winners when it came to having the most fun.

Senior Sunrise 2024

On September 16th, 2024, at Jones Beach, Newfield High School seniors gathered for a special event called "Senior Sunrise." Early in the morning, students came together to witness the breathtaking sunrise, marking a moment of reflection and excitement for their final year. The beach setting provided a perfect backdrop for capturing memories as students took photos and shared laughter with friends.

This event fostered a sense of community, allowing classmates to bond over shared experiences and aspirations for the year ahead. Conversations flowed easily as they reminisced about their high school journey and looked forward to the future. "Senior Sunrise" was not just about the beautiful views; it was a celebration of friendship, growth, and the moments that define their high school experience. As the sun rose, so did the spirit of the class of 2025, creating lasting memories that will be cherished for years to come. Overall, this gathering helped strengthen connections within the senior class, making it a truly unforgettable start to the school year.

APES Field Trip

Eric recalls a conversation he had with a Shinecock elder: As he points to the trees ahead, he remembers her asking, “what do you see?”

He contemplates for a moment, and responds, “a wooden forest ”

After a few short moments, he finally asks, “well what do you see?”

“A medicine cabinet,” she answered

On September 25th, our AP Environmental students arrived at the Center for Environmental Education & Discovery (CEED), and were spoken to by Eric Powers, a biologist with lots of wildlife experience, who works towards teaching the environment outdoors to the community.

Eric introduces the organization, as well as its mission, which is to provide ways for people to connect with nature, science and the community by utilizing artistic ventures and creativity, as experienced by the students throughout the day. He briefly mentions personal stories, including his recollection of the conversation he had with a Shinecock elder, who had perceived such natural factors, as simple as the trees of the forest on the property they were on, in yet such a different and creative way compared to the usual thought. He also mentions some of his early warnings about climate change that were not listened to until years later, serving as a reminder of how prominent the crisis is.

The students were then released to hike the trail that was included on the property. Throughout the trail, there were displays of several magnificent sculptures, with poetic scripts correlated with the sculptures. Many of the poems had recognized the uniqueness and essence of some of the Earth’s/nature’s features, my personal favorite being, “Seeing Blue,” by Nancy Keating, which mentions the skies, the deep ocean: the factors that reveal the beauty of our planet.

As the day went on, the students had done some other intriguing activities that entertained them as they roamed the acres of land They had done a scavenger hunt, in search of invasive plant species based on location and appearance, and had gotten the chance to hold the massive snake Eric had brought out near the end of the day! In addition, the students were given the opportunity to make massive dirt bombs, made by combining dirt and organic material with hydrogen peroxide, being one of the most entertaining highlights of the day It was a time filled with fun activities and creative ways to connect with nature, and it was a great way for the students to bond with each other whilst reminiscing about the nature surrounding them

SAW 2004 Movie Review

The classic horror film, Saw is a 2004 mystery/horror movie produced by Lionsgate Pictures. James Wan directed it. In the future, he would direct other hit films such as the Aquaman movies. This film takes place in an abandoned bathroom chamber that puts two men chained to pipes by their feet. The first man is Doctor Lawrence Gordon (played by Cary Elwes). He is a well-known oncologist who helps people with brain tumors. He has a wife named Alison (played by Monica Potter) and a daughter named Diana (played by Makenzie Vega). The second man is Adam Faulkner-Stanheight (played by Leigh Whannell). He is portrayed as an innocent man who happened to be in this horrible predicament. Only little is known about his character and his background other than being a photographer. As the two men come to realize their kidnapper, Jigsaw (played by Tobin Bell) put them in this challenging situation, they have to strategize and come to terms with how to escape.

Meanwhile, investigations take place outside of the chamber as Detective David Tapp (played by Danny Glover) and Detective Steven Sing (played by Ken Leung) try to connect past games from Jigsaw to find the reasons for his bidding. Doctor Gordan and Adam Faulker have to put themselves to the test as leftover recordings from Jigsaw, warn Doctor Gordan that if he doesn’t kill Adam by six o’clock, a man named Zep Hindle (played by Micheal Emerson) will murder Alison and Diana. As for Adam, if he doesn’t kill Doctor Gordan by six o’clock, they both die As the game progresses, Doctor Gordan puts the pieces together as to how and why he and Adam were put in the game in the first place by looking at small clues hidden inside the room.

This movie has lots of gore, action, and mystery which has all the ingredients of a horror film I love. Several plots get unraveled and many characters will face terrible hardship. This movie received tons of awards and would get many sequels and spinoffs in the following years The movie grossed $103 9 million on opening weekend, becoming one of the most successful horror movie franchises since the Scream franchise in 1996. The franchise still goes on to this day as its recent film from 2023, Saw X received $111.8 million worldwide at the box office Although Saw X didn’t make as much money as its predecessors, it was still a hit

In conclusion, Saw was a phenomenal film that had the right amount of suspense and horror. It is loved by tons of fans across the world, including myself, and has many iconic scenes such as the woman with the beartrap on her head and the iconic clown puppet on the red tricycle. The film became one of the most recognizable horror films to this date as it is compared to other movies such as Halloween, Friday The 13th, and Scream The franchise will be awaiting its new sequel, Saw XI coming to theaters on September 27th, 2025.

Clublicity: SADD Club

What is the SADD Club?

Have you ever had someone make a Destructive Decision, or are you hoping you can keep people from doing them? That’s what the SADD Club is all about!

SADD Club is a team of joyful teenagers (Not Sad - as much as the anagram may imply,) that focuses on keeping well-being in the community while putting meaning in their messages.

What Events Do We Set-Up Up and Plan?

SADD Club sets up entertaining events, like the school-renowned Class Competition, Coffeehouse, Wellness Week, Grim Reaper Day, and so much more! Coffeehouse, which SADD Club is known for, has its auditions on November 4th, with the Coffeehouse Performance date on November 26th, where people show off their talents, like playing an instrument, reading poetry, singing, and comedy acts! Students and Teachers have performed in the past, and they have had wonderful performances (eye-witnesses have enjoyed their acts!). Grim Reaper Day is also a fun event they host, which has the members of the SADD Club wear necklaces showing that they are Victims of a Destructive decision, during class, a bell rings on the loudspeaker, and the Victim is taken away from class by The Grim Reaper. Now, for the rest of the day, they are dead, and depressed, which would affect the mood of making Destructive Decisions in your Community!

Excitement Awaits!

If you would like to join the SADD Club, their next meeting is November 4th, Where they will prepare Decorations, and make a list of who will perform in Coffeehouse in Room 227! Everyone is welcome!

New AP Interview: Mr. Csorny

Many students have been eager to meet the new AP at Newfield High School. When they do, they will learn how kind and thoughtful he is. I had the opportunity to interview him, and he had a lot of fun answering my questions!

Being an AP, Mr. Csorny is misread; people might think he is mean, strict, and unforgiving, but he is actually quite the opposite. Mr. Csorny is the most likable, respectful, and forgiving AP I have ever met. He has two daughters, ages 5 and 7, who are spoiled and loved by their father. He and his wife, Lindsay, spend tons of time with their children. Mr. Csorny loves children so much that he has chosen to work in education. He feels his career choice was also heavily influenced by his mother. When he came to Newfield High School, Mr. Csorny was surprised how the diverse student body meshed so well together. I even had the chance to ask him who his favorite student was. Although I was eager to find out, he didn’t reveal a name. Instead, he quickly came up with a perfect answer: “All of them!”

October Student of the Month

Congratulations to Diya John, our October Student of the Month! Diya has been an incredibly active student at Newfield, as seen in her involvement with our various clubs and numerous services outside the school. She has been a part of class council since her freshman year, whilst proposing and successfully working with many fundraising events, and now serves as president of General Organization, the National Honor Society, and Newfield’s Newspaper. Furthermore, she is also a part of Dr. Gerold’s Leadership Committee, while also being a student representative during local meetings with governmental leaders, as an advocate for the budget change that has affected many of our students during the past year. Playing as a lawyer for the past two years, Diya has played many crucial roles on the Mock Trial Team since her sophomore year. Along with the other various clubs she is a part of, including the Foreign Language Club, and Glamour Gals, Diya has volunteered her time at Youth Volunteer for MCPL “Crochet for a Cause,” where she created and donated more than fifty baby hats at Stony Brook University Hospital. She is also involved with the American Red Cross.

Graduating at the top of her class, Diya has shown her responsible and persevering character in her academics, amid her several activities in and out of the school, a trait that many younger students, including myself, aspire to live up to. For the rest of her senior year, Diya hopes to enjoy and make memories to look back on in the future Congratulations Diya!

HALLOWEEN SCARY SHORT STORY

The night was bitterly cold, and the crisp air nipped at your cheeks as you stepped into the dense forest that was shrouded in darkness. The silhouettes of dead trees loomed around you, their skeletal branches reaching toward the sky like bony fingers. With each cautious step you took, the leaves on the ground crunched underfoot, the sound echoing eerily in the stillness of the night. Your flashlight flickered dimly, casting weak beams of light that barely penetrated the thick blackness surrounding you. It felt as if the shadows were closing in, and every rustle of leaves made your heart race. You forced yourself to focus on the brighter side, convincing yourself that the sounds were merely the wind stirring the foliage. But then, you heard it a faint pattern of footsteps behind you. You whipped around, squinting into the darkness, but there was nothing there. Just the night. Must be an animal, you thought, trying to shake off the unease settling over you Still, the stories you had heard about this forest lingered in your mind, amplifying your anxiety. Just a week before Halloween, four students had disappeared from this very area. A search party had combed through the woods, desperately looking for any sign of them, but their efforts had been in vain. There had been no trace no clues, no personal belongings left behind. One of those missing was your friend, and that thought propelled you deeper into the treacherous woods.

As you wandered further, your foot suddenly struck something hard on the ground. You froze. Was that an arm? Panic gripped you, and you wished fervently that this was just a figment of your imagination. Summoning your courage, you took another hesitant step, only to stumble upon another... arm. This was too bizarre. You knelt down, barely able to breathe, and soon realized they were plastic, mere Halloween decorations scattered across the forest floor. A wave of relief washed over you, and you chuckled softly, dismissing your fright. Determined to gain some ground, you eventually found yourself at the crooked front steps of an abandoned house. Its boarded-up windows and peeling paint radiated an air of desolation. With your heart pounding, you decided to step inside, the door creaking ominously as you pushed it open. The air was stale and thick with dust, echoing with the silence that wrapped around you like a heavy blanket. As you felt your way through the darkness, suddenly, something grabbed you from behind cold fingers tightening around your wrist. You instinctively fought back, panic surging through your veins, until laughter erupted around you. The lights ignited, blinding you momentarily, and when your vision cleared, you found yourself staring in shock at the four missing students your best friend among them. Relief washed over you as your best friend stepped forward. They began to explain that this was all a clever hoax a media fabrication designed to frighten the townsfolk. You could hardly believe it; it all seemed so absurd…Five days had passed since that first report, and now another student had vanished. In total, five young lives were unaccounted for four in the frantic first week, and one more just a week later, presumed to be searching for the others.

HALLOWEEN SCARY SHORT STORY

Have you ever wondered why people are afraid of bees?

Let me tell you the story of… THE KILLER BEE!

One morning, at 7:14 AM, Security Guard Mr. Banks was walking out of the cafeteria, checking for any suspicious activity. Suddenly, he heard a faint buzzing behind him. He turned around, screamed, and fell over.

From another student’s perspective, it looked like he just slipped on a banana peel. The student shrugged it off and went back to their homework. But five minutes later, the student heard a faint buzz behind them. They turned around, screamed, and fell over as well.

Later that day, around 12:30 PM, Mr. Latham was teaching a class. In the middle of his lecture about the Yellow River Valley, he heard a faint buzz. He turned around, screamed, and bolted for the door. But as he reached it, he slipped and fell, startling the class across the hall. One student got up to check on the teacher but then collapsed suddenly right beside him.

“There’s something happening!” Mr. Graviano shouted into the phone, alerting the students during their 9th-period classes. “Everyone, please remain calm and stay in your classrooms! We will contact you when everything is o ” He paused suddenly. Students and staff listened to the loudspeaker, hearing a faint buzzing noise. Then everyone jumped when they heard their principal scream, followed by a loud bang.

Now, the whole school was in chaos screaming, crying, yelling, pushing, and clawing their way toward the exits, only to find them blocked by a thick honeycomb. Students tried digging through it, but either got stuck in the honey oozing out or fell randomly to the floor. Suddenly, there was a loud buzz. Everyone covered their ears. Then something spoke. A human voice? No, a BEE.

“Hello, humans! We are the bees from Honey Hive 86, and we are here to invade your world. It will be much easier to remove your kind from this planet if you stop screaming and running.”

Everyone was stunned the bee could talk, and it had a plan to kill them. Desperate, they continued trying to escape, digging and kicking at the honeycomb, but it was no use. The bees were advancing quickly, and now they were wait… what’s that noise behind me? Is tha AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

YOM KIPPUR

Yom Kippur, the most sacred day in the Jewish calendar, occurs this year from Friday, October 11, to Saturday, October 12. Referred to as “Day of Atonement,” it concludes the Jewish high holy days that begin with Rosh Hashanah. During this period, Jews engage in prayer, Tzedakah (charity), and repentance to influence God’s plans for the year ahead. Even those who are less religious often observe Yom Kippur. On this day, work is prohibited, and a 25-hour fast occurs, along with special services at synagogue. At the conclusion of the holiday, final prayers are recited, the shofar (a ram ’ s horn) is blown, and the fast is broken. Many Jews acknowledge the end of the fast with a large meal shared with family and friends, a welcome celebration after serious self-reflection.

ROSH HASHANNAH

Every fall, religious Jews celebrate a special New Year with the holiday of Rosh Hashanah. This year, Rosh Hashanah takes place from Wednesday, October 2, to Friday, October 4. As the Jewish New Year, it marks the beginning of the high holy days, a period that culminates with another important holiday: Yom Kippur. During this time, Jews commonly greet each other with “Shana Tova,” which means “Good Year” in Hebrew. Rosh Hashanah is a time for both celebration and reflection, prompting individuals to evaluate the past year and consider ways to improve. This holiday has a rich history and has been celebrated for thousands of years; it is currently year 5784 on the Jewish calendar. Observant Jews attend synagogue services during Rosh Hashanah, listening to the shofar (a ram ’ s horn) and seeking forgiveness for their sins. Traditional foods such as challah bread and apples dipped in honey are enjoyed, symbolizing a sweet year ahead. Additionally, work is not permitted on Rosh Hashanah, which is why schools across the country are closed in its observance. The holiday is steeped in tradition and holds a great significance in Jewish culture.

Wishing a “Shana Tova” to all who celebrate!

BEWARE OF MONTAUK

Short Story by:

The story opens up with John celebrating his 13th birthday on Shang Wong Beach on June, 26 2036 at 6:16 pm

“Happy Birthday John” everyone exclaimed

In a delightful tone, Michael said, “I can’t believe how fast we grew up John! I remember when we were nine and watched ‘Star Wars Revenge of the Sith.’ Mom and Dad left $500 on the table when they fell asleep We decided to go and grab the $500 to spend on a Nintendo Switch Do you remember that?”

With a smile, John replied, “Yea, those were great times ”

Then in an eerie tone, Jess says to her siblings, “Hey guys, to celebrate this special occasion we should go to Camp Hero to see if the Montauk Demon is real!”

With a nervous tone, John says, “Heck no I'm not going to Camp Hero knowing the history of what's happened there and the idea that I might die there!”

Chris starts mocking John and in a smug tone says, “Come on John stop being such a chicken, those legends aren't true. If they were then News 12 would be there reporting it. You need to be a man and stop acting like a coward What I'm trying to say is just go with us and who knows you might just love it!”

After thinking to himself and contemplating if it was a good idea John rolls his eyes and replies to Chris with an annoyed tone.

“Fine, you're right they're just myths like Zeus. Plus, what's the worst that can happen we're only going to be there for a few hours ”

Everyone gets into Dan's truck and heads over to Camp Hero

After a few minutes of Dan driving and absolute silence in the truck, Michael nervously says to his siblings, ”Hey guys, I know we said that those legends about the Montauk Demon aren't true, but do you think there's a chance it could be true?“

With a worried tone, Jess says,” To be honest I think there is a chance! Do you know what I heard a few years ago?

I heard that a couple was camping near Camp Hero and one night while they were camping near the former military base they went to go and take some pictures and several days later they were reported missing Then after a year of being missing investigators found one of the couple's phones but it was damaged and on the back, it had a message that said "You all think you know pain but I've suffered far worse, and one day you will feel my pain".

Dans joins the conversation by saying, ”Two years ago I was scrolling through Instagram and there was this post It was talking about this YouTuber named ‘Adventure Valley’

and it said he went to Camp Hero to see if all the legends behind the base were true or if it was a myth

He was never found. The last post he made had him walking into the building and it looked like something was following him.”

In an anxious voice, Chris asks her siblings, “Do you guys still think this is a good idea?”

The car stops and before everyone starts pilling out Micheal reminds his siblings to take a flashlight Micheal also says, “Oh wait I can't forget my Fanny bag.”

Micheal jumps back into his truck to get his fanny bag while Chris rolls his eyes annoyed with his brother Chris says, “ Michael do you need to bring that fanny bag? We're only going to be here for a few hours!”

Micheal smirks and confidently replies by saying, “Trust me we're possibly going to need it. It might even save our lives!” John is the last one to get out of the car and when he gets out he amazingly says, ”Wow so, this is Camp Hero, it seems calmer than I anticipated ”

Suddenly an unknown voice starts to speak seriously to the group

“You shouldn't be here! Turn back while you still can!” Seriously Dan says, “Who are you? Who’s there?”

The stranger starts to lower his voice to a calmer tone and introduces himself, “My name is Tim, nice to meet you ” Then Michael kindly introduces himself, “Hi my name is Michael Why did you mean by turning back while you still can?”

With a sigh, Tim starts to explain why he said they shouldn't have come

“Because so many people have come and died here Me, my wife, and a few of my friends came here years ago to explore the site Something attacked us! I barely remember, but it killed everyone and I barely made it out alive.” With terror in her eyes, Jess asks Tim with a terrified tone, “Wha... What did it look like?”

Tim replies, “ I don't remember much, but I'll tell you what I do remember It had a black hazmat suit, a helmet with devil-like horns sticking out of the helmet, Wolverine-like claws, and glowing red eyes.”

Grateful towards Tim Chris says, “Tim thank you for…” but suddenly a quietness fell upon the group

After a minute of complete silence Dan says to his siblings confusingly, “Tim disappeared, where did he go?”

Nervously John replies to Dan saying, “ Do you guys still think this is a good idea? We can still turn back and never look back!”
