Doug Elmslie, Mayor, City of Kawartha Lakes
Fenelon’s name originates from François de Saligna de la Mothe-Fenelon, a French missionary who worked with Indigenous communities in the late 1600s.
The region was inhabited by the Mississauga Anishinaabe, before Europeans settled here. The Indigenous Peoples lived along the rivers and lakes and relied on the natural resources for trade and sustenance.
Their legacy is a significant part of the area’s history, and is recognized with our ongoing connections to the land.
Fenelon Falls is located on the homeland of the Michi Saagiig (also known as the Mississauga First Nations), and the collective Williams Treaties First Nations, which include the Curve Lake, Hiawatha, Alderville, Scugog Island, Rama, Beausoleil, and Georgina Island First Nations.
We recognize that these lands are their traditional territory, and are grateful for their caretaking and stewardship of the land, historically and for the years to come.
