Heritage

Steeped in history, our Indigenous roots and lifestyles of early settlers tell a unique story.

• Historic Sites • Cultural Centres • Festivals • Museums

Welcome to Fenelon Falls

The Jewel of the Kawarthas, where no matter what time of year you’re here, there’s always something to jump into!

Aside from opportunities to paddle the waterways or take in one of our curated scenic driving tours, Fenelon Falls offers many artisanal shops and waterfront restaurants where you can buy one-of-akind handcrafted items or try our local craft brews. Whether you are seeking a waterway adventure, finding that perfect gift, or simply craving a place to get close to nature, Fenelon Falls offers many great opportunities for all that and more.

If you’re looking for a unique theatrical experience, check out The Grove Theatre. As an outdoor amphitheatre, you’ll be treated to live performances within a beautiful grove.

To get some ideas for things to do in Fenelon, including a list of great places to shop and eat locally, visit www.explorekawarthalakes.com.

Fenelon’s name originates from François de Saligna de la Mothe-Fenelon, a French missionary who worked with Indigenous communities in the late 1600s.

The region was inhabited by the Mississauga Anishinaabe, before Europeans settled here. The Indigenous Peoples lived along the rivers and lakes and relied on the natural resources for trade and sustenance.

Their legacy is a significant part of the area’s history, and is recognized with our ongoing connections to the land.

Fenelon Falls is located on the homeland of the Michi Saagiig (also known as the Mississauga First Nations), and the collective Williams Treaties First Nations, which include the Curve Lake, Hiawatha, Alderville, Scugog Island, Rama, Beausoleil, and Georgina Island First Nations.

We recognize that these lands are their traditional territory, and are grateful for their caretaking and stewardship of the land, historically and for the years to come.

DID YOU KNOW ...

Fenelon Falls was first called Cameron’s Falls after Duncan Cameron, who was provincial secretary of Upper Canada.

Fenelon’s ‘Falls’ are located on the Fenelon River, which connects Cameron Lake to Sturgeon Lake.

Maryboro Lodge in Fenelon Falls gives you a glimpse into the world of early settlers in the area, bringing the region’s history to life.

Originally built in 1877, Fenelon Falls’ Train Station connected the village through the Victoria Railway. Today, it is the Station Gallery, an artists’ co-operative.
